1. Extendibility of Brauer states

Abstract

We investigate the extendibility problem for Brauer states, focusing on the symmetric two-sided extendibility and the de Finetti extendibility. By employing the representation theory of the unitary and orthogonal groups, we provide a general recipe for finding the $(n,m)$-extendible and $n$-de Finetti-extendible Brauer states. In the two-sided case we describe the special symmetry that only appears for $(n,n)$-extendible symmetric states. From the concrete form of the commutant to the diagonal action of the orthogonal group, we explicitly determine the set of parameters for which the Brauer states are $(1,2)$-, $(1,3)$- and $(2,2)$-extendible in any dimension $d$. Using the branching rules from $\mathrm{SU}(d)$ to $\mathrm{SO}(d)$, we obtain the set of $n$-de Finetti-extendible Brauer states in low dimensions, and analytically describe the $n\to\infty$ limiting shape for $d=3$. Finally, we derive some general properties pertaining to the extendibility of Werner, isotropic and Brauer states.

3. Generalized group designs: overcoming the 4-design-barrier and constructing novel unitary 2-designs in arbitrary dimensions

Unitary designs are essential tools in several quantum information protocols. Similarly to other design concepts, unitary designs are mainly used to facilitate averaging over a relevant space, in this case, the unitary group $\mathrm{U}(d)$. While it is known that exact unitary $t$-designs exist for any degree $t$ and dimension $d$, the most appealing type of designs, group designs (in which the elements of the design form a group), can provide at most $3$-designs. Moreover, even group $2$-designs can only exist in limited dimensions. In this paper, we present novel construction methods for creating exact generalized group designs based on the representation theory of the unitary group and its finite subgroups that overcome the $4$-design-barrier of unitary group designs. 4. No-broadcasting theorem for non-signalling boxes and assemblages

Abstract

The no-broadcasting theorem is one of the most fundamental results in quantum information theory; it guarantees that the simplest attacks on any quantum protocol, based on eavesdropping and copying of quantum information, are impossible. Due to its fundamental importance, it is natural to ask whether it is an inherent quantum property or holds also for a broader class of non-classical theories. A relevant generalization is to consider non-signalling boxes. Subsequently Joshi, Grudka and Horodecki$^{\otimes 4}$ conjectured that one cannot locally broadcast nonlocal boxes. In this paper, we prove their conjecture based on fundamental properties of the relative entropy of boxes. 5. Extendibility of Werner States

Abstract

We investigate the two-sided symmetric extendibility problem of Werner states. The interplay of the unitary symmetry of these states and the inherent bipartite permutation symmetry of the extendibility scenario allows us to map this problem into the ground state problem of a highly symmetric spin-model Hamiltonian. We solve this ground state problem analytically by utilizing the representation theory of SU(d), in particular a result related to the dominance order of Young diagrams in Littlewood-Richarson decompositions. As a result, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the extendibility of Werner states for arbitrary extension size and local dimension. Interestingly, the range of extendible states has a non-trivial trade-off between the extension sizes on the two sides. Abstract

The Rocker Project provides widely used Docker images for R across different application scenarios. This article surveys downstream projects that build upon the Rocker Project images and presents the current state of R packages for managing Docker images and controlling containers. These use cases cover diverse topics such as package development, reproducible research, collaborative work, cloud-based data processing, and production deployment of services. The variety of applications demonstrates the power of the Rocker Project specifically and containerisation in general. Across the diverse ways to use containers, we identified common themes: reproducible environments, scalability and efficiency, and portability across clouds. 12. Revisiting resource selection probability functions and single-visit methods: Clarification and extensions

Abstract

Models accounting for imperfect detection are important. Single-visit methods have been proposed as an alternative to multiple-visits methods to relax the assumption of closed population. Knape and Korner-Nievergelt (2015) showed that under certain models of probability of detection single-visit methods are statistically non-identifiable leading to biased population estimates. There is a close relationship between estimation of the resource selection probability function (RSPF) using weighted distributions and single-visit methods for occupancy and abundance estimation. We explain the precise mathematical conditions needed for RSPF estimation as stated in Lele and Keim (2006). The identical conditions, that remained unstated in our papers on single-visit methodology, are needed for single-visit methodology to work. We show that the class of admissible models is quite broad and does not excessively restrict the application of the RSPF or the single-visit methodology. To complement the work by Knape and Korner-Nievergelt, we study the performance of multiple-visit methods under the scaled logistic detection function and a much wider set of situations. In general, under the scaled logistic detection function multiple-visits methods also lead to biased estimates. As a solution to this problem, we extend the single-visit methodology to a class of models that allows use of scaled probability function. We propose a Multinomial extension of single visit methodology that can be used to check whether the detection function satisfies the RSPF condition or not. 28. Differences in species-area relationships among the major lineages of land plants: A macroecological perspective

Aim: Although the increase in species richness with increasing area is considered one of the few laws in ecology, the role of environmental and taxon-specific features in shaping species-area relationships (SARs) remains controversial. Using 421 land-plant floras covering continents, continental islands and oceanic islands, we investigate whether variations in SAR parameters can be interpreted in terms of differences among lineages in speciation mode and dispersal capacities (TAXON), or of geological history and geographical isolation between continents and islands (GEO). Location: Global. Methods: Linear mixed-effects models describing variation in SARs, depending on the factors GEO and TAXON and controlling for differences between realms (REALM) and biomes (BIOME). Results: The best random-effect structure included both random slopes and random intercepts for GEO, TAXON, REALM and BIOME. This accounted for 77% of the total variation in species richness, substantially more than the 27% statistically explained by the model with fixed effects only (i.e. the simple SAR). The slopes of the SARs were higher for oceanic islands than for continental islands and continents, and higher in spermatophytes than in pteridophytes and bryophytes. The intercepts largely exhibited the reverse trend. TAXON was included in best-fit models restricted to oceanic and continental islands, but not continents. Analysing each plant lineage separately, the intercept of GEO was only included in the random structure of spermatophytes. Main conclusions: SAR parameters varied considerably depending on geological history and taxon-specific traits. Such differences in SARs among land plants challenge the neutral theory that the accumulation of species richness on islands is controlled exclusively by extrinsic factors. Taxon-specific differences in SARs were, however, confounded by interactions with geological history and geographical isolation. This highlights the importance of applying integrative frameworks that take both environmental context and taxonomic idiosyncrasies into account in SAR analyses. © 2014 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Abstract

Organisms provide some of the most sensitive indicators of climate change and evolutionary responses are becoming apparent in species with short generation times. Large datasets on genetic polymorphism that can provide an historical benchmark against which to test for recent evolutionary responses are very rare, but an exception is found in the brown-lipped banded snail (Cepaea nemoralis). This species is sensitive to its thermal environment and exhibits several polymorphisms of shell colour and banding pattern affecting shell albedo in the majority of populations within its native range in Europe. We tested for evolutionary changes in shell albedo that might have been driven by the warming of the climate in Europe over the last half century by compiling an historical dataset for 6,515 native populations of C. nemoralis and comparing this with new data on nearly 3,000 populations. The new data were sampled mainly in 2009 through the Evolution MegaLab, a citizen science project that engaged thousands of volunteers in 15 countries throughout Europe in the biggest such exercise ever undertaken. A known geographic cline in the frequency of the colour phenotype with the highest albedo (yellow) was shown to have persisted and a difference in colour frequency between woodland and more open habitats was confirmed, but there was no general increase in the frequency of yellow shells. This may have been because snails adapted to a warming climate through behavioural thermoregulation. By contrast, we detected an unexpected decrease in the frequency of Unbanded shells and an increase in the Mid-banded morph. Neither of these evolutionary changes appears to be a direct response to climate change, indicating that the influence of other selective agents, possibly related to changing predation pressure and habitat change with effects on micro-climate.

Abstract

Direct and indirect effects of disturbance may cause the decline of specialist species and alter the condition of ecological communities. We characterized the community structure and niche characteristics (niche position, marginality, breadth) of upland and lowland boreal birds at scales relevant to both natural and human disturbance patterns in western boreal forests undergoing rapid and extensive multi-sector resource development. Our goal was to identify the degree of ecological specialization in order to inform activities directed at conserving a diversity of species (e.g. specialists and generalists) within the western boreal bird community. We used avian data (>5,220 point counts) and environmental variable data comprised of forest composition, stand, and landscape pattern metrics at local (7.1 ha), landscape (1,963 ha), and regional (11,310 ha) scales to determine boreal bird distribution and community-level associations using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) and Outlying Mean Index (OMI) analysis. OMI analysis explained a high proportion of variance in the dataset (71.8%) and separated boreal birds along two axes associated with moisture–productivity and age–structural complexity gradients. Niche position was influenced by local scale variables (height, age, area of mature-old forest, area of wet soil types), but also landscape and regional scale variables (total area of hardwood and conifer, mean nearest neighbour distance of conifer, and total core area of productive upland conifer). Only 15 of 67 species (22%) had marginal (atypical) niches and narrow niche breadths exhibiting specialization in old hardwood and white spruce forests and burned, open, and lowland habitats. Most species occupied typical or common habitats within the study area and exhibited generalist strategies typical of species in heterogeneous and disturbed habitats that undergo frequent change. Our results suggest the need to design and implement multi-species plans to conserve a diversity of western boreal bird species (e.g. specialists and generalists) at the regional scale. 38. Ecological monitoring through harmonizing existing data: Lessons from the boreal avian modelling project

Abstract

To accomplish the objectives of a long‐term ecological monitoring program (LTEM), repurposing research data collected by other researchers is an alternative to original data collection. The Boreal Avian Modelling (BAM) Project is a 10‐year‐old project that has integrated the data from >100 avian point‐count studies encompassing thousands of point‐count surveys, and harmonized across data sets to account for heterogeneity induced by methodological and other differences. The BAM project faced the classic data‐management challenges any LTEM must deal with, as well as special challenges involved with harmonizing so many disparate data sources. We created a data system consisting of 4 components: Archive (to preserve each contributor's data), Avian Database (harmonized point‐count data), Biophysical Database (spatially explicit environmental covariates), and Software Tools library (linking the other components and providing analysis capability). This system has allowed the project to answer many questions about boreal birds; we believe it to be successful enough to merit consideration for use in monitoring other taxa. We have learned a number of lessons that will guide the project as it moves forward. These include the importance of creating a data protocol, the critical importance of high‐quality metadata, and the need for a flexible design that accommodates changes in field techniques. One of the challenges the BAM team faced—gaining access to relevant data sets—may become easier with the increased expectation by journals and funding agencies that documenting and preserving research data be a standard part of scientific research. © 2015 The Wildlife Society.

39. Data and information management for the monitoring of biodiversity in Alberta

Abstract

The Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) monitors large‐scale responses of biodiversity to environmental change in Alberta, Canada, based on standardized and ongoing data collection. In this case study, we show that such a standardized monitoring system has many data management challenges. In the almost 20 years since the conception of the Institute, we have identified 4 key characteristics that are required for large‐scale, long‐term biodiversity monitoring programs to be operational: 1) data must be publicly accessible; 2) methods and terminology must be standardized to facilitate consistency around data and information collection, analysis, and reporting; 3) the information system must be flexible so that components can be modified or added without compromising the functionality of the other components or the whole system; and 4) the system must be scalable so that it can support input, storage, and retrieval as data load increases. These characteristics are important to ensure that the products and tools generated from our monitoring program can support management at large spatial scales in the complex socio‐ecological system of Alberta. © 2015 The Wildlife Society.

Magnetic spherules from Pleistocene terrestrial sediments in southern Hungary were systematically collected and investigated. By means of chemical analysis, Fe, Fe(Mn), Fe(Ni) and glassy (silicate) spherules can be distinguished. Some of them have characteristic features suggesting an extraterrestrial origin: Ni-bearing crust, Ni-rich core and especially the platinum group nuggets with their unique chemical composition. They could have been formed by meteorite ablation process.

42. A szent és a profán szimbolikája az építészetben

Abstract

The words 'sacred' and 'profane' aren't used in their customary meaning in this lecture. The nearest interpretation of our explanation is in the first chapter of Mircea Eliade's Sacred and Profane titled 'Sacred is manifesting'. The title of this article had been chosen to regard comprehensively Eliade's book for this reason. In this lecture we would like to consider the symbolism of decorated, ornamented, structured surfaces of architectural - or nearly architectural - phenomena. We would like to analyse just as the everytime/everywhere cosmic ordination, n the universal arangement of these - manifested itself according to the everytime/everywhere cosmic meaning. The everytime/everywhere architectural phenomenon oversteps itself. Beyond the satisfaction of practical and average requirements it has communicated by discoverable messages of cultural and civilisational codes about the world. The everywhere architecture is a 'paradoxical medium'. We have to develop an intellectual relationship with it in addition to what we see about, or how we use it in space or appropriateness. The quality of architecture gets meaning - will be manifested - in an interpretational context. We just have to catch it - to interpretate for ourself - in a conceivable space, and appropriateness to arrive at close to its substance. Eliade says: 'We couldn't emphasize enough that every hierophania (manifestation of the sacred) - even the most elemental - is a paradoxon'. (…) A sacred stone more over is a stone (from a profane point of view). It is not different from all of the other stones at all. Though, every other people for whom this stone has manifested as a sacred stone, the direct reality had been converted into supernatural reality. Those people who had religious experiences, the whole nature manifested as a cosmic sacrament. In such case the whole cosmos will be a hierophan.' Well, we would like to present - by some examples - that progress, as the cosmic ordination is manifested by the architectural phenomena. This ordination is a canonic one - it's structured by the everytime/everywhere cosmic comprehension, and itís aranged by discoverable principles, and as such being is a super-existent one, over the average peopleís profane aspect. Its manifestation could be interpretated in a conceivable space and appropriateness. The understanding of these manifestations - independently of either sacral or secular explanations - needs spiritual efforts.

Emulating natural disturbance (END) patterns to conserve biodiversity is often a goal of forest management but the impact of forest cutting is still controversial. We examined effects on avian assemblages of partially-cut forest stands of 1–10, 11–20 and > 45 years (cut classes) post-harvest differing in the % basal area retained as wildlife species' habitat in 85 shade-tolerant hardwood stands in Algonquin Park, Ontario. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance indicated significant compositional differences among cut classes, after controlling for year and township (spatial variation in surficial geology and topography), both of which were also significant. Pairwise comparisons indicated significant compositional differences only between young and old stands. The difference in beta diversity (homogenization/differentiation) among cut classes was marginally significant (P = 0.066). Pairwise differences were significant between old versus mid-aged cut classes, marginally significant for young versus old cuts, and non-significant for young versus mid-aged cut classes. Six species and cavity users as a group were more abundant in > 45 years post-harvest stands than in the other two cut classes. Six species had higher abundances in younger cuts than > 45 years post-harvest cuts. Red-eyed vireo (Vireo olivaceus) showed a nonlinear response and was least abundant in 11–20 year cuts. Blackburnian warblers Setophaga fusca , black-throated green warblers S. virens and pileated woodpeckers Dryocopus pileatus increased with the density of supercanopy trees (≥ 60 cm diameter at breast height - dbh) and in the case of pileated woodpeckers more large snags (≥ 40 cm dbh). Brown creeper Certhia americana abundance increased with greater basal area of trees ≥ 25 cm dbh and ovenbird numbers were significantly related to overall basal area. Chestnut-sided warbler S. castanea abundance decreased with an increase in overall basal area and was higher in the 1–10 year cuts and American redstarts S. ruticilla decreased with an increase in basal area. Our modelling suggests that effects of selection cutting systems on the avian community may be reduced as tolerant hardwood stands become regulated and have higher residual basal areas. Current guidelines in Ontario for the retention of large, scattered conifer trees appear to meet the requirements for most, but not all, species; however, guidelines for supercanopy trees are too low. These results indicate that the END paradigm for single-tree selection cutting in tolerant hardwoods may be partially effective but requires modifications, such as retaining higher densities of supercanopy trees that would be beneficial for birds. Abstract: Structural differences between the 1-2-3 type and 1-2-4 type high temperature superconductors were studied by comparing their151Eu and57Fe Mssbauer spectra. The similarities between the corresponding Mssbauer parameters of Eu Mssbauer spectra of 1-2-3 and 1-2-4 compounds demonstrate that the Eu state can be considered to be identical in both perovskites. The changes in the Fe Mssbauer parameters of 1-2-4 type superconductor compared to those of 1-2-3 type compound can be associated with structural differences.

A high-critical-temperature superconducting transition in multiple-phase La-Ba-Cu-O and Y-Ba-Cu-O systems has been found with the aid of electrical and magnetic measurements. The possible causes of superconductivity is also considered. Among them the change of Fermi-surface topology is the most appreciated.
