1. Where do they live? Predictive geographic distribution of Tadarida brasiliensis brasiliensis (Chiroptera, Molossidae) in South America

Abstract

Tadarida brasiliensis, the Brazilian free-tailed bat, is an insectivorous molossid with a wide distribution in the Americas. It occurs in different ecosystems and uses varied shelters, from caves and crevices to human constructions, such as roofs and ceilings. Despite its wide distribution, there are several sampling gaps that make it difficult to identify the regions where the species occurs. This is a particular problem for the subspecies T. brasiliensis brasiliensis in South America, a region with few studies in comparison to North America. Considering these problems involved with identifying the distribution of T. b. brasiliensis in South America, we inferred its distribution based on 121 confirmed occurrences for the subspecies. We created a species distribution model (SDM) using the ensemble approach from the combination of BIOCLIM, SVM, GLM and MaxEnt algorithms. The resulting model suggested that the subspecies is unlikely to occur in the Amazon region and has a positive affinity with human population density, topography, a lower vegetation index, and the precipitation in the driest month. Our results show there is a large continuous area suitable for T. b. brasiliensis in central and eastern South America, with interruptions and narrow areas toward Central America. The population in this last area is separated from a smaller site in Chile by Andean deserts, snowy peaks, and high-altitude points. Our results demonstrated that along its distribution suitable habitat for T. b. brasiliensis is not continuous. The discontinuities in populations require further investigation to determine if there are phylogeographic consequences for the species.

Abstract

Human Visceral Leishmaniasis is an endemic public health problem in the Amazon. This article analyzed the spatial distribution of this disease and its relationship with socioeconomic, environmental and public health policy variables in four mesoregions of the state of Pará, from 2011 to 2022. This ecological study used secondary data obtained from official Brazilian agencies. Spatial analysis was performed using the Flow, Kernel and Global Moran bivariate techniques expressed in thematic maps. In the mesoregions studied, 2685 cases of the disease were confirmed, with the highest number of cases in Southeast Pará state. The epidemiological profile followed the national pattern of occurrence of the disease, with a higher number of cases in children below school age. Spatial dependence was observed between the prevalence of the disease and socio-economic indicators. The most intense movement of patients was towards the Belém Metropolitan mesoregion. The disease showed an inhomogeneous pattern of distribution of cases, with a direct relationship between areas with cases and deforestation associated with different anthropic activities. There is a socio-environmental production of the disease that goes beyond the border limits of the mesoregions, and its establishment is related to the unsustainable development model implemented in the region.

Abstract

Abstract Phyllostomid bats (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) are key elements for the maintenance of New World forests, but little information on their distribution is available in some regions of Brazil. Here we use occurrence records and bioclimatic variables to model the distribution of phyllostomid bats in Santa Catarina, a subtropical Brazilian state. Estimates of geographic variation in species richness were then obtained by stacking the generated maps. Lastly, we tested how associated species richness is to ecoregions and Protected Areas. Our results suggest that the phyllostomid bats species richness is closely linked to the region’s climate gradient. Most species are restricted to the Serra do Mar ecoregion, where the temperature is high and varies less throughout the year. In contrast, the colder areas seem to house extremely simple communities, composed of a subset of the species present in the warmer areas. We found significant evidence that Protected Areas in Santa Catarina play an important role in the conservation of species, although there are still several places where species richness is high, but no Protected Area is available. The creation of new Protected Areas in these places can boost the species conservation, and, consequently, the ecological services provided by phyllostomid bats.

Abstract

Human visceral leishmaniasis is a major public health problem in the Amazon. Thus, we analyzed the spatial distribution of this disease and its relationship with epidemiological, socioeconomic, and environmental variables in the Carajás Integration Region, Pará state, from 2011 to 2020. Epidemiological data for this ecological study were obtained from the State Public Health Secretariat, environmental data were obtained from the National Space Research Institute, and socioeconomic data were obtained from the Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute. ArcGIS 10.5.1 software was used for classifying land use and cover and for the Kernel and Moran spatial analyses. It was observed in 685 confirmed cases that the epidemiological profile followed the national pattern of the disease occurrence, with a high prevalence in children who were not school-aged. The disease had a non-homogeneous distribution with clusters related to different human activities, such as urbanization, ranching, and mining. A spatial dependence between the disease prevalence and socioeconomic indicators was observed. The municipalities presented gradients of case densities associated with a direct relationship between areas with cases and deforestation. The disease is developing due to risk factors such as establishment and maintenance related to the non-sustainable development model implemented in the region, pointing to the need for its revision.

Abstract

Three specimens of Vampyrodes caraccioli were collected in Corupá and São Bento do Sul, in Santa Catarina state, increasing its geographic distribution extension by 170 km south. These specimens also represent the first record for the species in Santa Catarina. The knowledge about bats in Santa Catarina has increased in recent years, showing the need of basic studies about richness and diversity in different regions.

Abstract

A terrestrial mammal inventory was conducted in the State Biological Reserve of Sassafrás, Santa Catarina from August 2004 to March 2008. The objective of the study was to investigate and better describe the mammalian fauna of Santa Catarina state. We recorded species presence via several methods, including sightings, collection of fallen stock, identification of tracks, utilization of camera traps, and live animal trapping. In full, we recorded 43 mammalian species distributed among eight orders. Our constructed inventory includes information on the biology of some species recorded, as well as potential threats to the conservation of terrestrial mammals in this region.

Abstract

De agosto de 2004 a março de 2008, foi realizado um inventário da mastofauna terrestre da Reserva Biológica Estadual do Sassafrás para aumentar o conhecimento acerca deste grupo no estado de Santa Catarina. As espécies foram registradas através de armadilhas fotográficas, avistamentos, coleta de animais mortos, rastros e armadilhas de captura viva. Foram registradas 43 espécies pertencentes a oito ordens. Informações sobre a biologia das espécies registradas foram incluídas, bem como as ameaças para os mamíferos terrestres da região.

Abstract

O Parque Estadual da Serra do Tabuleiro, situado no centro-leste do Estado de Santa Catarina, sul do Brasil, possui 85.000ha e abrange grande diversidade de ambientes (floresta ombrófila densa, incluindo manguezais e restingas, floresta ombrófila mista e estepe ombrófila). De 1991 a 2010 foram realizados 22 estudos sobre sua mastofauna, abrangendo os métodos de captura com armadilhas de arame, armadilhas de interceptação e queda, caixas de nidificação, redes-de-neblina, armadilhas fotográficas, observação direta e vestígios. Foram registradas 75 espécies autóctones (cerca de 54% das espécies de mamíferos terrestres confirmados para Santa Catarina) pertencentes a 8 ordens e 25 famílias. Quinze espécies são ameaçadas em nível estadual, nacional ou mundial. A possibilidade de ocorrência de outras espécies e aspectos gerais da conservação dos mamíferos no Parque são discutidos.

Abstract

Rhagomys rufescens (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae) is an endemic species of the Atlantic forest from Southern and Southeastern Brazil. Some authors consider Rhagomys as part of the tribe Thomasomyini; but its phylogenetic relationships remain unclear. Chromosomal studies on eight specimens of Rhagomys rufescens revealed a diploid number of 2n = 36 and a number of autosome arms FN = 50. GTG, CBG and Ag-NOR banding and CMA3/DAPI staining were performed on metaphase chromosomes. Eight biarmed and nine acrocentric pairs were found in the karyotype of this species. The X and Y chromosomes were both acrocentric. Most of the autosomes and the sex chromosomes showed positive C-bands in the pericentromeric region. The X chromosome showed an additional heterochromatic block in the proximal region of the long arm. Nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) were located in the pericentromeric region of three biarmed autosomes (pairs 4, 6 and 8) and in the telomeric region of the short arm of three acrocentrics (pairs 10, 12 and 17). CMA3/DAPI staining produced fluorescent signals in many autosomes, especially in pairs 4, 6, and 8. This study presents cytogenetic data of Rhagomys rufescens for the first time.

Abstract

The activity period of the crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) was studied in the Itajaí valley, Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, through camera traps during a 15-month survey. The existence of relationships between this behavior and abiotic factors was also investigated. We found that the crab-eating fox’s activity is basically nocturnal (54%) and crepuscular (25%). It has been classified as cathemeral. However, there were no relationships among the abiotic factors estimated (rainfall, temperature and lunar phases).

Estudou-se o período de atividade do graxaim (Cerdocyon thous) no vale do Rio Itajaí, Santa Catarina, sul do Brasil através de armadilhas fotográficas durante um período de 15 meses e a relação desta atividade com os fatores abióticos (pluviosidade, temperatura e fases lunares). Foi constatado que sua atividade é basicamente noturna (54%) e crepuscular (25%), sendo classificada como catemeral. Não houve nenhuma relação do período de atividade com os fatores abióticos avaliados.

Abstract

The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. Abstract

We present a new assessment of the genetic and morphological variation within Oxymycterus quaestor Thomas, 1903, which currently includes the junior synonyms O. judex Thomas, 1909 and O. misionalis Sanborn, 1931. We integrate distinct lines of evidence, including variation of mitochondrial (Cytochrome b [Cytb]) and nuclear (intron 7 of beta fibrinogen gene [Fgb]) sequences, and the assessment of skull quantitative traits based on geometric morphometrics, throughout the Atlantic Forest of Southeastern-Southern Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. Phylogenetic relationships based on Cytb indicate that O. quaestor is structured in four well-supported clades (lineages A–D), one of them (lineage C) including topotypes of a previously associated nominal form (O. judex). However, these Cytb lineages exhibit lower levels of differentiation based on the Fgb locus, and are not recovered in the genealogies of this nuclear marker, representing a case of mitonuclear discordance. The Cytb lineages also broadly overlapped in the morphospace both in skull shape and size, which sustain the current wider concept of O. quaestor as one single young species (0.947 Myr) that is recently expanding, and ultimately branching out, in the Atlantic Forest.

Abstract

We describe a new species of the cricetid rodent Oxymycterus (Sigmodontinae), which inhabits a transitional area between the southern Cerrado and the Atlantic Forest in south-southeastern Brazil. Compared to other Oxymycterus, the new species is large-sized with a tawny-brown pelage coloration. The new species could be differentiated from other Oxymycterus species by a combination of cranial characteristics that includes markedly large and inflated auditory bulla; a narrow rostrum and large incisive foramen, with the posterior extremity reaching the posterior region of the M1 protocone or hypoflexus; a wide parapterygoid fossa; the presence of a foramen ovale in the posterior region of the parapterygoid plate; and a thin hamular process of the squamosal. Bayesian analysis based on the mitochondrial and nuclear genes (cytochrome-b and acid phosphatase type V—Intron 2, respectively) recovered from the Oxymycterus sp. nov. showed it to be phylogenetically closely related to O. amazonicus and O. delator, all three species associated with open vegetation. The lineage leading to this clade likely emerged around 1.14 million years ago during the Early-Middle Pleistocene. Genetic distances between the new taxa and these two species calculated from comparison of cytochrome-b sequences are 3.7% and 4.1%, respectively. Currently, Oxymycterus sp. nov. is known from only two unprotected sites, with the type locality inserted in an area under the process of conurbation. Our study raises the number of living species in the genus to 16.

Abstract

Ants, an ecologically successful and numerically dominant group of animals, play key ecological roles as soil engineers, predators, nutrient recyclers, and regulators of plant growth and reproduction in most terrestrial ecosystems. Further, ants are widely used as bioindicators of the ecological impact of land use. We gathered information of ant species in the Atlantic Forest of South America. The ATLANTIC ANTS data set-which is part of the ATLANTIC SERIES data papers-is a compilation of ant records from collections (18,713 records), unpublished data (29,651 records), and published sources (106,910 records; 1059 references), including papers, theses, dissertations, and book chapters published from 1886 to 2020. In total, the data set contains 153,818 ant records from 7,636 study locations in the Atlantic Forest, representing 10 subfamilies, 99 genera, 1,114 ant species identified with updated taxonomic certainty, and 2,235 morphospecies codes. Our data set reflects the heterogeneity in ant records, which include ants sampled at the beginning of the taxonomic history of myrmecology (the nineteenth and twentieth centuries) and more recent ant surveys designed to address specific questions in ecology and biology. The data set can be used by researchers to develop strategies to deal with different macroecological and regional-wide questions, focusing on assemblages, species occurrences and distribution patterns. Furthermore, the data can be used to assess the consequences of changes in land use in the Atlantic Forest on different ecological processes. No copyright restrictions apply to the use of this data set, but we request that authors cite this data paper when using these data in publications or teaching events.

Incluye contenido parcial de los autores Abstract.Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecologicalhealth and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carni-vores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide managementand conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropicalregion: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; andUrsidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropicalcarnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTRO-PICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data wereobtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organi-zations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including cameratrapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature(peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated inthis compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n=79,343; 79.7%) butalso includes non-detection data (n=20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data(n=43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute tomacroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspec-tives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distri-bution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans andsafeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combinedwith other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and relatedecological processes within the Neotropics. There are no copyright restrictions and no restric-tion for using data from this data paper, as long as the data paper is cited as the source of theinformation used. We also request that users inform us of how they intend to use the data.

Abstract

Establishing the genetic basis that underlies craniofacial variability in natural populations is one of the main topics of evolutionary and developmental studies. One of the genes associated with mammal craniofacial variability is RUNX2, and in the present study we investigated the association between craniofacial length and width and RUNX2 across New World bats (Phyllostomidae) and primates (Catarrhini and Platyrrhini). Our results showed contrasting patterns of association between the glutamate/alanine ratios (Q/A ratio) and palate shape in these highly diverse groups. In phyllostomid bats, we found an association between shorter/broader faces and increase of the Q/A ratio. In New World monkeys (NWM) there was a positive correlation of increasing Q/A ratios to more elongated faces. Our findings reinforced the role of the Q/A ratio as a flexible genetic mechanism that would rapidly change the time of skull ossification throughout development. However, we propose a scenario in which the influence of this genetic adjustment system is indirect. The Q/A ratio would not lead to a specific phenotype, but throughout the history of a lineage, would act along with evolutionary constraints, as well as other genes, as a facilitator for adaptive morphological changes. Abstract

Herein we describe the first records of Molossops neglectus for the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The records arebased on 3 specimens captured in the municipalities of Chapecó and São Domingos, in the western portion of the state.Considering that M. neglectus is an infrequent species in field surveys, new data on its geographical range is importantto better understand the biology and ecology of M. neglectus.

19. Mammal collections in Brazil

Abstract

Advances in our knowledge on the planet biodiversity have been largely dependent upon biological collections, and today they continue to be the cornerstone of several disciplines. Recently, the Brazilian Society of Mammalogists established the Mammal Collections Committee (CCM-SBMz) aiming to collect, organize and share information on the mammalian collections in Brazil, as well as support their management. As a first step, our goal here is to provide a diagnosis of mammal collections in Brazil, and the CCM-SBMz contacted 100 collections and successfully registered 71, distributed in all five Brazilian regions. These collections house ca. 372,200 specimens, with 60% of these concentrated in three institutions: MNRJ, MZUSP, and MPEG. The material more commonly deposited are voucher specimens. The database is completely digitized or in process of digitization in most collections, however, this information is not widely available online. The geographic coverage of the collections is mainly regional or national. In number of specimens, Rodentia is the most frequent order in the collections, followed by Carnivora. At the family level, Didelphidae, Cricetidae, and Felidae are the more frequent taxa. This study shows that Brazil houses an important volume of mammalian specimens. However, considering the country’s continental size and high mammal diversity, these numbers are still far from a sufficient representation of the Brazilian mammalian diversity. The results summarize the first efforts of the CCM-SBMz and the committee will continue monitoring the mammal collections in Brazil, as well as working to help the management and growth of collections.

Three specimens of Vampyrodes caraccioli were collected in Corupá and São Bento do Sul, in Santa Catarina state,increasing its geographic distribution extension by 170 km south. These specimens also represent the first record forthe species in Santa Catarina. The knowledge about bats in Santa Catarina has increased in recent years, showing theneed of basic studies about richness and diversity in different regions.

Apesar do clima subtropical, estas florestas também ocorrem no sul do Brasil, na calha do rio Uruguai e seus principais afluentes, uma região ainda carente em estudos sobre a fauna. Neste sentido, apresentam-se aqui os resultados obtidos com o levantamento da mastofauna durante a etapa de implantação da Usina Hidrelétrica Foz do Chapecó, na divisa entre os estados de Santa Catarina e Rio Grande do Sul, no período de setembro de 2007 a junho de 2010. Foram empregados os métodos de observação direta, levantamento de vestígios e atropelamentos, armadilhas fotográficas, captura de pequenos mamíferos com armadilhas de arame e chapa de alumínio e com armadilhas de interceptação e queda, captura de morcegos com redes de neblina, busca por colônias e entrevistas. Foram registradas 68 espécies, pertencentes a 22 famílias e nove ordens de mamíferos, incluindo 16 espécies ameaçadas e duas exóticas. A riqueza de pequenos mamíferos foi relativamente alta. Akodon spp. e Oligoryzomys nigripes foram as espécies mais abundantes entre os não voadores, e Sturnira lilium e Artibeus spp. entre os morcegos. Várias espécies de médio e grande porte registradas são raras ou estão extintas localmente. Esses dados possivelmente refletem os impactos da grande perda de cobertura floresta e da pressão caça, cuja mitigação é fundamental para conservação da biota regional.

Abstract

Six individuals of Oxymycterus dasytrichus (Schinz, 1821) were found on the coast of Paraná and Santa Catarina (in the Atlantic Forest), expanding the known geographical distribution of the species ca. 280 km southward. The specimens represent the first record of the species for the state of Santa Catarina, and new localities to the region of southern Paraná. The identification of the species relied mainly on interspecies comparative assessment of genetic distance based on DNA sequences data from the mitochondrial cytochrome-b gene and geographic distribution of taxa across biomes, particularly in the Atlantic Forest. Our findings highlight the role of protected areas, particularly the Guaraqueçaba Environmental Protection Area, to preserve small mammals.

Abstract

Background The role of bats as reservoirs of zoonotic agents, especially pathogenic bacteria such as Bartonella and Coxiella, has been discussed around the world. Recent studies have identified bats as potential hosts of species from the proteobacteria phylum. In Brazil, however, the role of bats in the natural cycle of these agents is poorly investigated and generally neglected. In order to analyze the participation of bats in the epidemiology of diseases caused by Bartonella, Coxiella, Rickettsia, Anaplasma and Ehrlichia, we conducted a descriptive epidemiological study in three biogeographic regions of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Results Tissues of 119 bats captured in preserved areas in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and Santa Catarina from 2014 to 2015 were submitted to molecular analysis using specific primers. Bartonella spp. was detected in 22 spleen samples (18.5%, 95% CI: 11.9–26.6), whose phylogenetic analysis revealed the generation of at least two independent clusters, suggesting that these may be new unique genotypes of Bartonella species. In addition, four samples (3.4%, 95% CI: 0.9–8.3) were positive for the htpAB gene of C. burnetii [spleen (2), liver (1) and heart (1)]. Rickettsia spp., Anaplasma and Ehrlichia were not identified. This is the first study reporting C. burnetii and Bartonella spp. infections in bats from the Atlantic Forest biome. Conclusions These findings shed light on potential host range for these bacteria, which are characterized as important zoonotic pathogens. Abstract

Pleistocene climatic oscillations favoured the expansion of grassland ecosystems and open vegetation landscapes throughout the Neotropics, and influenced the evolutionary history of species adapted to such environments. In this study, we sampled populations of the rodent Oxymycterus nasutus endemic to open areas in the Pampas and Atlantic Forest biomes to assess the tempo and mode of population divergence using an integrative approach, including coalescence theory, ecological niche models, and morphometry. Our results indicated that these O. nasutus populations exhibited high levels of genetic structure. Six major mtDNA clades were found, structuring these biomes into distinct groups. Estimates of their divergence times was indicated to be 0.571 myr. The high degree of genetic structure is reflected in the analyses of geometric morphometric; skull differences between lineages in the two ecoregions were detected. During the last glacial maximum, there was a strong increase in suitable abiotic conditions for O. nasutus. Distinct molecular markers revealed a population expansion over time, with a possible demographic retraction during the post-glacial period. Considering that all clades coalesce with the last interglacial maximum, our results indicated that reduction in suitable conditions during this period may have resulted in a possible vicariance associated with refuge isolation.

Abstract

A study concerning the bee fauna of the Serra do Itajaí National Park, state of Santa Catarina, was carried out during ten months in the domain of the Atlantic Rainforest. Bees were collected monthly between October 2006 and December 2007, in two sampling localities, from 8:00 h to 16:00 h, totaling 151 h of sampling. Bees were captured with entomological nets in flowers, during flight, on the ground or while foraging for sweat on collectors. A total of 1,616 individuals were collected (1,240 females and 376 males), distributed in 89 species, 46 genera, 16 tribes and five subfamilies. Apinae was the richest subfamily with 47 species. The genera with the greatest number of species were Augochloropsis Cockerell, 1897 (nine), Ceratina Latreille, 1802 (nine) and Dialictus Robertson, 1902 (seven). Paratetrapedia fervida (Smith, 1879) was the most abundant species, comprising 11.57 % of the sampled individuals

Abstract

Scientists have long been trying to understand why the Neotropical region holds the highest diversity of birds on Earth. Recently, there has been increased interest in morphological variation between and within species, and in how climate, topography, and anthropogenic pressures may explain and affect phenotypic variation. Because morphological data are not always available for many species at the local or regional scale, we are limited in our understanding of intra- and interspecies spatial morphological variation. Here, we present the ATLANTIC BIRD TRAITS, a data set that includes measurements of up to 44 morphological traits in 67,197 bird records from 2,790 populations distributed throughout the Atlantic forests of South America. This data set comprises information, compiled over two centuries (1820–2018), for 711 bird species, which represent 80% of all known bird diversity in the Atlantic Forest. Among the most commonly reported traits are sex (n = 65,717), age (n = 63,852), body mass (n = 58,768), flight molt presence (n = 44,941), molt presence (n = 44,847), body molt presence (n = 44,606), tail length (n = 43,005), reproductive stage (n = 42,588), bill length (n = 37,409), body length (n = 28,394), right wing length (n = 21,950), tarsus length (n = 20,342), and wing length (n = 18,071). The most frequently recorded species are Chiroxiphia caudata (n = 1,837), Turdus albicollis (n = 1,658), Trichothraupis melanops (n = 1,468), Turdus leucomelas (n = 1,436), and Basileuterus culicivorus (n = 1,384). The species recorded in the greatest number of sampling localities are Basileuterus culicivorus (n = 243), Trichothraupis melanops (n = 242), Chiroxiphia caudata (n = 210), Platyrinchus mystaceus (n = 208), and Turdus rufiventris (n = 191). ATLANTIC BIRD TRAITS (ABT) is the most comprehensive data set on measurements of bird morphological traits found in a biodiversity hotspot; it provides data for basic and applied research at multiple scales, from individual to community, and from the local to the macroecological perspectives. Abstract

Rhagomys rufescens (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae) is an endemic species of the Atlantic forest from Southern and Southeastern Brazil. Some authors consider Rhagomys as part of the tribe Thomasomyini; but its phylogenetic relationships remain unclear. Chromosomal studies on eight specimens of Rhagomys rufescens revealed a diploid number of 2n = 36 and a number of autosome arms FN = 50. GTG, CBG and Ag-NOR banding and CMA(3) /DAPI staining were performed on metaphase chromosomes. Eight biarmed and nine acrocentric pairs were found in the karyotype of this species. The X and Y chromosomes were both acrocentric. Most of the autosomes and the sex chromosomes showed positive C-bands in the pericentromeric region. The X chromosome showed an additional heterochromatic block in the proximal region of the long arm. Nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) were located in the pericentromeric region of three biarmed autosomes (pairs 4, 6 and 8) and in the telomeric region of the short arm of three acrocentrics (pairs 10, 12 and 17). CMA (3) /DAPI staining produced fluorescent signals in many autosomes, especially in pairs 4, 6, and 8. This study presents cytogenetic data of Rhagomys rufescens for the first time.

Abstract

A new species of swamp rat of the genus Scapteromys from the Meridional Plateau of Southern Brazil is described. Morphological, molecular, and karyological analysis support the recognition of the new species, distinct from S. aquaticus and S. tumidus. Scapteromys sp. nov. is significantly smaller than the congeneric taxa considering most of the external and craniometric measurements and the pelage is conspicuously grayer and darker. It can be distinguished from S. tumidus by the laterally extended thenar pad of the manus and the parallel edges of the hamular process of the pterygoid, and from S. aquaticus by a grayer and darker pelage and smaller values of most external and craniometric measurements. Karyological analysis indicated a difference in chromosome numbers across the distributional range: 2n=34 and 2n=36. A total of 11 haplotypes were found along the range of the new species within the biogeographic province of Araucaria angustifolia Forest. Strongly supported substructure was found within the new taxon, resulting in two reciprocally monophyletic clades.

30. Variações na coloração de iraras (Eira barbara Linnaeus, 1758 - Carnivora, Mustelidae) da Reserva Biológica Estadual do Sassafrás, Santa Catarina, sul do Brasil

Abstract

Iraras apresentam variações de coloração por toda sua área de distribuição, sendo o objetivo deste estudo contribuir para o conhecimento destas variações. Na Reserva Biológica Estadual do Sassafrás, Santa Catarina, Brasil, foram obtidos 21 registros fotográficos de iraras, abrangendo diferentes colorações de pelagem. Duas classes de coloração foram observadas entre os indivíduos fotografados: corpo escuro com cabeça e pescoço cinzas e corpo, cabeça e pescoço branco-amarelados. A freqüência dos registros não variou significativamente entre as duas classes de coloração, indicando que a coloração de pelagem branco-amarelada é comum para esta população local.

Abstract

Histiotus are vespertilionid bats endemic to South America, easily recognized by its very long ears. During a twelve-month bat inventory in northeastern Brazil, eleven specimens of Histiotus were collected with a unique combination of characters that did not match those of any known species. In this paper, we describe these specimens as a new species. Histiotus sp. nov is distinguished from its congeners by its pale transparent wings and translucent ears, a triangular-shaped ear with a prominent lobe in the inner border connected by a band (~4 mm) across the forehead; its general golden-brownish body color and well-marked bicolor dorsal hairs. Its geographic distribution is unique among vespertilionids, arranged in a northeast-southwest diagonal across South America, includes the Caatinga and Cerrado of Brazil and Chaco of Bolivia. The available data suggest a seasonal reproductive pattern, with births occurring in the mid to late rainy season.

Abstract

Migration is defined as a seasonal and cyclic population movement observed in all animal classes and studied mainly in vertebrates. A considerable part of the knowledge on migration comes from birds, for which migration is an important aspect of their biology. In the case of bats, females usually migrate larger distances than males in some species. The present study analyzes the seasonal occurrence of Pygoderma bilabiatum (Wagner, 1843) at different elevations, in order to test for a pattern that evidences migration, using data from the states of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A total of 529 specimens of P. bilabiatum were captured. Pygoderma bilabiatum seems to be more frequent at intermediate and high elevations (over 80% of all captures were made above 250 m a.s.l.) and at latitudes above 22°S, where rainfall is high (over 1,500 mm) and temperatures are mild (16-23°C). Sex ratio varied with elevation; it was skewed towards males at lower elevations (N = 9, r² = 0.60, F = 12.311, p = 0.008, Sex ratio = 0.0004*elevation + 0.976), though females predominated at all altitudinal bands and in all states analyzed.

Abstract

O Parque Estadual da Serra do Tabuleiro, situado no centro-leste do Estado de Santa Catarina, sul do Brasil, possui 85.000ha e abrange grande diversidade de ambientes (floresta ombrófila densa, incluindo manguezais e restingas, floresta ombrófila mista e estepe ombrófila). De 1991 a 2010 foram realizados 22 estudos sobre sua mastofauna, abrangendo os métodos de captura com armadilhas de arame, armadilhas de interceptação e queda, caixas de nidificação, redes-de-neblina, armadilhas fotográficas, observação direta e vestígios. Foram registradas 75 espécies autóctones (cerca de 54% das espécies de mamíferos terrestres confirmados para Santa Catarina) pertencentes a 8 ordens e 25 famílias. Quinze espécies são ameaçadas em nível estadual, nacional ou mundial. A possibilidade de ocorrência de outras espécies e aspectos gerais da conservação dos mamíferos no Parque são discutidos.

Abstract

Since it was trapped in the XIX th century, Rhagomys rufescens has been considered a rare endangered sigmodontine rodent and an endemic species of the Atlantic forest. Only a handful of vouchers of this taxon were known by Thomas, 1886. Recently, eight new individuals were collected, providing new geographical, morphological and phylogenetic (based on molecular evidence) information on this species. In the present work we report the southernmost occurrence record for R. rufescens at Indaial, Santa Catarina State, with the largest collected series of this species, the northernmost occurrence record at Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo State, and new records from Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais State, from Ibiúna and Ribeirão Grande, São Paulo State.

Abstract

Microchiropteran bats sustain very high oxygen consumption rates when active, but they also exhibit drastic daily drops in oxygen consumption when torpid. In addition, bats are also characterized by an extraordinary longevity considering their body mass and high specific metabolic rate when compared to other mammals of related size. Therefore, they consist of a very interesting group regarding the free radical theory of aging. The present study was carried out to measure the antioxidant defenses of several tissues of five South American bat species, attempting to correlate the antioxidant status, ecophysiology and longevity. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities in blood, liver and kidney were higher compared to other tissues. The contents of α-tocopherol and β-carotene found in liver, heart, kidneys, and pectoral muscles were one to two orders of magnitude higher than those usually found in rat and mouse liver. Also, these contents in liver were generally inversely related to lipoperoxidation measured as TBARS contents. Blood GSH contents and the activities of SOD and CAT were higher in torpid Sturnira lillium compared to active ones, thus suggesting that the elevation of such antioxidants might be daily modulated to minimize the oxidative stress related to the transition from torpid to active state in bats. The lower ROS generation reported in the literature for other bat species, their high constitutive antioxidant defenses, and the daily energy sparing associated with torpor appear to be closely related to their ecophysiological adaptations and to their extended longevity.

Abstract

Species identification through DNA barcoding is a tool to be added to taxonomic procedures, once it has been validated. Applying barcoding techniques in public health would aid in the identification and correct delimitation of the distribution of rodents from the subfamily Sigmodontinae. These rodents are reservoirs of etiological agents of zoonoses including arenaviruses, hantaviruses, Chagas disease and leishmaniasis. In this study we compared distance-based and probabilistic phylogenetic inference methods to evaluate the performance of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) in sigmodontine identification. A total of 130 sequences from 21 field-trapped species (13 genera), mainly from southern Brazil, were generated and analyzed, together with 58 GenBank sequences (24 species; 10 genera). Preliminary analysis revealed a 9.5% rate of misidentifications in the field, mainly of juveniles, which were reclassified after examination of external morphological characters and chromosome numbers. Distance and model-based methods of tree reconstruction retrieved similar topologies and monophyly for most species. Kernel density estimation of the distance distribution showed a clear barcoding gap with overlapping of intraspecific and interspecific densities < 1% and 21 species with mean intraspecific distance < 2%. Five species that are reservoirs of hantaviruses could be identified through DNA barcodes. Additionally, we provide information for the description of a putative new species, as well as the first COI sequence of the recently described genus Drymoreomys. The data also indicated an expansion of the distribution of Calomys tener. We emphasize that DNA barcoding should be used in combination with other taxonomic and systematic procedures in an integrative framework and based on properly identified museum collections, to improve identification procedures, especially in epidemiological surveillance and ecological assessments.

Abstract

The present study reports historical records of Myrmecophaga tridactyla and Ozotoceros bezoarticus from the north plateau of Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, thus contributing to the knowledge about the distribution of these species. The possible causes of the extinction of Ozotoceros bezoarticus are also discussed as well as management tactics to conserve these species in southern Brazil.

Abstract

Abstract Background The role of bats as reservoirs of zoonotic agents, especially pathogenic bacteria such as Bartonella and Coxiella, has been discussed around the world. Recent studies have identified bats as potential hosts of species from the proteobacteria phylum. In Brazil, however, the role of bats in the natural cycle of these agents is poorly investigated and generally neglected. In order to analyze the participation of bats in the epidemiology of diseases caused by Bartonella, Coxiella, Rickettsia, Anaplasma and Ehrlichia, we conducted a descriptive epidemiological study in three biogeographic regions of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Results Tissues of 119 bats captured in preserved areas in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and Santa Catarina from 2014 to 2015 were submitted to molecular analysis using specific primers. Bartonella spp. was detected in 22 spleen samples (18.5%, 95% CI: 11.9–26.6), whose phylogenetic analysis revealed the generation of at least two independent clusters, suggesting that these may be new unique genotypes of Bartonella species. In addition, four samples (3.4%, 95% CI: 0.9–8.3) were positive for the htpAB gene of C. burnetii [spleen (2), liver (1) and heart (1)]. Rickettsia spp., Anaplasma and Ehrlichia were not identified. This is the first study reporting C. burnetii and Bartonella spp. infections in bats from the Atlantic Forest biome. Conclusions These findings shed light on potential host range for these bacteria, which are characterized as important zoonotic pathogens.
