2. Deformation of upper mantle rocks with contrasting initial fabrics in axial extension

Abstract

To explore the role of the olivine grain size and crystal preferred orientation (CPO) on the evolution of the microstructure and the mechanical behaviour of upper mantle rocks up to large strains, we performed axial extension experiments at 1200C, 300MPa confining pressure, and constant displacement rate on three natural peridotites: a fine-grained mylonitic harzburgite with a weak CPO and two coarse-grained well-equilibrated dunites with CPO of variable intensity. Initial flow stresses show a limited range of variation (115-165MPa), with the fine-grained sample showing the highest initial strength. However, the evolution of both mechanical behavior and microstructure differs between fine and coarse-grained peridotites. In the fine-grained harzburgite, necking resulted in decrease in the apparent differential stress. Focusing of strain and stress produced increase of the olivine recrystallized fraction and decrease of the recrystallized grain size in the neck. Analysis of the final stress and strain in the neck indicates softening due to evolution of the microstructure and CPO. In contrast, necking of the coarse-grained samples produced weak or no decrease in the apparent differential stress. This implies hardening, consistently with the increase in bulk intragranular misorientation and final stresses in the neck similar or higher than initial ones. Coarse-grained dunites deformed heterogeneously. Crystals well oriented to deform by dislocation glide became elongated, whereas those in hard orientations remained almost undeformed. In the neck, stress and strain concentration resulted in formation of kinks in hard crystals and dynamic recrystallization in soft crystals. We interpret the more effective strain-induced softening of the fine-grained peridotite as due to easier dynamic recrystallization, probably due to the higher proportion of grain boundaries acting as nucleation sites., Comment: Revised version of the article submitted to Tectonophysics in June 2021. Abstract

In the present work, the fabrication of a membrane composed of polylactic acid (PLA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and Biological Hydroxyapatite (BIO-HA) is reported using the coaxial electrospinning technique. The membrane fabrication process involved mixing a solution of PLA and trichloromethane (TCM) with a second solution of PVA, isopropyl alcohol (IPA), distilled water, and BIO-HA at 110 °C. Subsequently, the electrospinning process was carried out using a voltage of 25 kV for 30 min on a rotating drum collector at 1000 rpm. The membrane was characterized through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The morphological results revealed the presence of randomly arranged fibers with an average diameter of 290 ± 9 nm and interfiber spacing ranging from 200 to 700 nm, which are characteristics conducive to cell proliferation. Additionally, FTIR studies confirmed the presence of BIO-HA and the constituent elements of the polymers in the composite membrane. The polymeric membrane in contact with human mesenchymal stem cells was characterized as showing significant differences in its behavior at 6, 24, and 72 h post-contact. These studies indicate that the membrane provides physical support as a scaffold due to its suitable morphology for cell adhesion and proliferation, attributable to the electrospinning conditions as well as the polymers contained in BIO-HA. Membrane toxicity was confirmed through a cytotoxicity study using fluorescence microscopy, which showed that the membrane provided a favorable environment for cell proliferation. Abstract

Diversos estudios se han centrado en el estudio de variables relacionadas a la calidad de vida y el bienestar mental que reflejan desde una perspectiva más amplia y completa el bienestar del paciente con enfermedad crónica, yendo más allá de solo el control biomédico. La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo evaluar la funcionalidad física y el bienestar mental de los pacientes con enfermedades crónicas en el Hospital Naval Guayaquil para la propuesta de un programa de apoyo social y asistencial al grupo de estudio. Para ello, se realizó un estudio cuantitativo, transversal de tipo descriptivo y correlacional. Se encuestó a un total de 53 (37%) pacientes crónicos y 90 (63%) pacientes sin enfermedad crónica, el cuestionario evaluó la salud en general, funcionalidad física y salud mental a través de la escala SF-36. Los hallazgos revelaron que tanto los niveles de función física y salud mental difieren significativamente entre los grupos crónicos y no crónicos. Los pacientes con enfermedad crónica reportaron niveles de función física y salud mental significativamente más bajos. La relación entre función física y salud mental resultó solo significativa e importante en magnitud para los pacientes con enfermedad crónica. Las intervenciones propuestas fueron plan de actividad física y visitas programadas al psicólogo sobre las cuales se proponen un monitoreo y evaluación adecuada para probar su efectividad. Several studies have focused on the study of variables related to quality of life and mental well-being that reflect from a broader and more comprehensive perspective the well-being of patients with chronic disease, going beyond just biomedical control. The objective of this research was to evaluate the physical functionality and mental well-being of patients with chronic diseases at the Guayaquil Naval Hospital for the proposal of a social and assistance support program for the study group. For this, a quantitative, cross-sectional descriptive and correlational study was carried out. A total of 53 (37%) chronic patients and 90 (63%) patients without chronic disease were surveyed; the questionnaire assessed general health, physical functionality and mental health through the SF-36 scale. The findings revealed that both the levels of physical function and mental health differ significantly between the chronic and non-chronic groups. Patients with chronic disease reported significantly lower levels of physical function and mental health. The relationship between physical function and mental health was only significant and important in magnitude for patients with chronic disease. The proposed interventions were a physical activity plan and scheduled visits to the psychologist on which adequate monitoring and evaluation are proposed to prove their effectiveness.

Abstract

The Columbretes Islands (eastern Spain) comprise a volcanic archipelago 50 km off the eastern Spanish coast. Illa Grossa is the main island of the archipelago. After the settlement of humans during the mid-19th century, strong modifications in biodiversity took place, including the reduction of the non-flying vertebrate fauna to a single taxon, Podarcis liolepis atratus (Boscá, 1916). The study of the fossils yielded at the COLT site (dated by AMC between 2780-2724 cal BP and 2600-2492 cal BP) from a loess deposit located at the south of Illa Grossa Island shows that this fauna was more diverse in the past. The assemblage was dominated by squamate reptiles, belonging to two lizards (Chalcides bedriagai (Boscá, 1880) and cf. Podarcis Wagler, 1830) and one snake (Vipera cf. latastei Boscá, 1878). The record in the late Holocene of Columbretes of Vipera cf. latastei settles the existing controversy about the identity of snakes in the archipelago. Regarding Chalcides bedriagai, this is the first record of its presence in the Columbretes Islands. Other faunal elements recovered from the site include at least six species of undetermined birds (passeriforms and procellariforms) and the anthropophilic Mus cf. musculus Linnaeus, 1758. The origin of the squamates taxa from Columbretes palaeontological site (COLT) is still unclear, but was probably related to the Late Pleistocene-Greenlandian (11 700 to 8300 BP, Early Holocene) sea transgression, natural passive colonization, and/or human introduction. We hypothesize implications for the conservation and management of the Natural Reserve.

Abstract

Altres ajuts: CERCA Programme/Generalitat de Catalunya, Els Casots is one of the richest fossil vertebrate sites of the Vallès-Penedès Basin (Catalonia, Spain). It was discovered in 1989 and excavated briefly during the 1990s, resulting in the recovery of thousands of remains and the erection of several new mammal species. Excavations were resumed in 2018 and continue to date. Here we provide updated results regarding the age, stratigraphy, biota and palaeoenvironment of the site. The age of the site is well constrained to ~15.9 Ma thanks to recent bio- and magnetostratigraphic data, thus coinciding with the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO). The stratigraphic succession at the site area indicates lacustrine to palustrine environments with cyclically oscillating water level. There are several fossiliferous layers that have yielded a vertebrate fauna comprising up to 75 different vertebrate species including amphibians, reptiles, birds and mostly mammals. The finding of several articulated partial skeletons indicate that the site records an autochthonous to parautochthonous assemblage. The abundance and completeness of the vertebrate remains together with a well-constrained age and detailed stratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental data, make els Casots a key site for understanding wetland ecosystems in southern Europe during the MCO.

Abstract

Lateral Gallery 1 (GL1) in Cova del Gegant is a Middle Palaeolithic assemblage yielding diagnostic Neanderthal remains, together with Mousterian tools and faunal remains. It is a good archive for evaluating the environmental conditions of the coastal areas during MIS 4 and MIS 3 in the NE of the Iberian Peninsula, and also the Neanderthals' behaviour and mobility. Here we provide a comprehensive assessment of all of the data available from GL1, such as lithics, human remains, fauna and chronostratigraphic details. The biotic ecofacts studied point to the development of a coastal plain in front of the cave and indicate that local conditions likely favoured a large variety of ecosystems characterised by open environments and woodland-edge taxa, and favoured repeated visits by humans during the Middle Palaeolithic. The evidence suggests that the gallery was mainly used by carnivores, such as hyenas, and also by Neanderthals as a brief stopping place, in view of the presence of transported and abandoned ergonomic lithic artifacts and/or the placement of bodies (or parts of bodies). The regional context suggests high human mobility and emphasises the variability of Neanderthal behaviour.
