The general inhalation anesthetic sevoflurane can be used as a topical analgesic in patients with painful wounds. For this new indication, it is irrigated in its liquid formulation into the wound bed, which inevitably causes room pollution. This investigation aimed to analyze the environmental contamination caused by new sevoflurane gel and microsphere formulations at different concentrations (50 %, 30 %, and 10 %) to find which would produce air levels below 2 ppm. The weight loss over time of each formulation was recorded to calculate the amount of sevoflurane volatilized, and the associated room pollution was further calculated under demanding conditions (a small 12 m 3 room with three air exchanges per hour, a patient treated every 30 min). Air levels below 2 ppm were found for the gel at 10 % and the microspheres at 30 %. The counting and characterization of neurons in primary cultures have long been areas of significant scientific interest due to their multifaceted applications, ranging from neuronal viability assessment to the study of neuronal development. Traditional methods, often relying on fluorescence or colorimetric staining and manual segmentation, are time consuming, labor intensive, and prone to error, raising the need for the development of automated and reliable methods. This paper delves into the evaluation of three pivotal deep learning techniques: semantic segmentation, which allows for pixel-level classification and is solely suited for characterization; object detection, which focuses on counting and locating neurons; and instance segmentation, which amalgamates the features of the other two but employing more intricate structures. The goal of this research is to discern what technique or combination of those techniques yields the optimal results for automatic counting and characterization of neurons in images of neuronal cultures. Purpose: To review and analyse the available literature on peripheral administration of noradrenaline (NA) with the aim of providing recommendations to ensure correct use and patient safety., Methods: Systematic review on the databases PubMed, ISI Web of Science, SCOPUS, and Science Direct, using the following search terms: ("Noradrenaline" [Mesh]) AND ("Norepinephrine" [Mesh]) AND ("Vasopressors" [Mesh]) AND ("Peripheral infusions" [Mesh]) OR ("Extravasations" [Mesh]). A total of 1040 articles were identified. Animal studies and studies written in languages other than English were excluded. Finally, 83 articles were included., Results: NA can be administered peripherally. The risk of extravasation should be taken into account, with phentolamine being the first pharmacological line of treatment. It has also been related to the appearance of thrombophlebitis, cellulitis, tissue necrosis, limb ischaemia, and gangrene, although its incidence seems to be low. The use of peripheral NA in children seems to be carried out without obvious complications. The use of standard concentrations is suggested to reduce the risk of errors. Watermelons are in high demand for their juicy texture and sweetness, which is linked to their soluble solids content (SSC). Traditionally, watermelons have been sold as whole fruits. However, the decline in the mean size of households and the very large size of the fruits, together with high prices, mainly at the beginning of the season, mean that supermarkets now sell them as half fruits. For consumers, it is important to know in advance that the fruits that they are purchasing are of a high quality, based not only on external flesh colour but also on sweetness. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and Raman spectroscopy were used for the in situ determination of SSC in half watermelons while simulating supermarket conditions. A handheld linear variable filter (LVF) device and an all-in-one (AIO) Process Raman analyser were used for the NIRS and Raman analysis, respectively. The excellent results obtained-including residual predictive deviation for prediction (RPD p ) values of 3.06 and 2.90 for NIRS and Raman, respectively-showed the viability of NIRS and Raman spectroscopies for the prediction of sweetness in half watermelons.

Background/Objective: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria pose a significant threat to global health, especially in intensive care units (ICUs), where high antibiotic consumption drives antimicrobial resistance. Selective digestive decontamination (SDD) is a strategy designed to prevent nosocomial infections and colonization by MDR pathogens. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of implementing an SDD protocol on antibiotic consumption and colonization by carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterale (CPE) in a specific ICU setting. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in the ICU of a university hospital from June 2021 to June 2023. Patients were divided into two groups: pre-intervention (before SDD) and post-intervention (after SDD implementation). Data on antibiotic consumption (expressed as defined daily doses (DDDs) per 100 stays), nosocomial infections, colonization rates, and the incidence of MDR bacteria were collected. A statistical analysis was conducted to compare the pre- and post-intervention groups. Results: A total of 3266 patients were included, with 1532 in the pre-intervention group and 1734 in the post-intervention group. The implementation of the SDD protocol resulted in a significant reduction in total antibiotic consumption ( p = 0.028), with notable decreases in carbapenem use ( p < 0.01) and colonization by CPE ( p = 0.0099). The incidence of nosocomial infections also decreased in the post-SDD group, although this reduction was not statistically significant. Conclusions: The implementation of the SDD protocol in this ICU setting significantly reduced antibiotic consumption and colonization by CPE. These findings suggest that SDD may be a valuable tool in managing antimicrobial resistance in critical care settings, without contributing to the development of MDR bacteria.

Introduction: Maxillary sinus pneumatization increases with age and tooth loss, leading to a reduction in the maxillary alveolar ridge, which often results in insufficient bone height for the proper placement of dental implants. This study focused on performing maxillary sinus elevations in ex vivo bisected pig heads using novel access and elevation devices, comparing these with the osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) technique., Materials and Methods: An experimental study was conducted using 20 ex vivo adult pig heads. The sinus elevations were divided into two groups: 10 heads were treated using the osteotome technique, and 10 heads were treated using a new device, which consists of a syringe with latex and saline solution, as well as a burr system for membrane access and control., Results: In the osteotome technique, perforations of the Schneiderian membrane were observed, whereas the inflatable balloon device did not cause any lacerations., Conclusions: OSFE resulted in sinus membrane perforations at greater elevation heights, while the new balloon device successfully elevated the membrane without tearing it. Within the limitations of this study, maxillary sinus lifts using the new balloon technique proved to be minimally invasive procedures.

Background/Objectives: Female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) surgical treatment has changed since its beginning. Selecting materials that promote constructive tissue remodelling helps to maintain continence after surgery and minimizes complications. To analyze the long-term urinary continence results in women who underwent SUI surgical correction using the transobturator mid-urethral sling KIM system ® (Knotless Incontinence Mesh) and analyze the complications associated with this SUI treatment. Materials and Methods: Prospective study of the first 1000 patients undergoing SUI surgery with the Contasure KIM ® sling between April 2007 and December 2018. Results and complications were recorded. Group A represented 94.2% of the sample and were the continent patients after surgery (GA = 942), while Group B accounted for incontinent patients after surgery (5.8%) (GB = 58). Results : The mean age at operation was 60 years. Eutocic deliveries ( p = 0.0022), high blood pressure ( p = 0.0190), anxiety ( p = 0.0084), hemorrhoidectomies ( p = 0.0016) and hysterectomies ( p = 0.0002) were higher in GB. No differences between groups were found regarding body mass index (GA 26.50; GB 26.93) ( p = 0.220649), food or drug allergies ( p = 0.0.6547), dystocia ( p = 0.2365), diabetes mellitus ( p = 0.1715), pelvic surgery ( p = 0.8842), other surgery ( p = 0.8801) or concomitant treatments that would have an impact on bladder function. Correction of SUI was achieved in 94.2% of cases. Continence persisted over time in 97.98% of continent patients at 4-year follow-up and 90.90% of patients at last follow-up. Mesh caused erosion of the urethra in 0.3% of patients and extruded to the vagina in 0.42%. De novo urinary urgency (2.8%), significant chronic pain (3.6%) and urinary tract infections (3.0%) after surgery were lower than complications reported in reviewed publications. Pain was treated with medication, and all patients were pain-free at the one-year follow-up visit. Conclusions : The mid-urethral transobturator sling KIM system ® has good initial and long-term results in patients with stress urinary incontinence, with a low recurrence rate and minimal complications.

In this study, an in-house validation of Visible and Near Infrared Spectroscopy was performed to distinguish between extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and virgin olive oil (VOO). A total of 161 samples of olive oil of three different categories (EVOO, VOO and lampante (LOO)) were analysed by transflectance using a monochromator instrument. One-class models were initially developed using Partial Least Squares (PLS) Density Modelling to characterize EVOO and VOO category. Once the LOO samples were discriminated, linear and non-linear discriminant models were built to classify EVOO and VOO. Different data pre-treatments and variable selection algorithms were evaluated to establish the best models in terms of Correct Classification Rate (CCR). The best model, obtained after variable selection using PLS Discriminant Analysis, yielded CCR values of 82.35 % for EVOO and 66.67 % for VOO in external validation. Background: Most paediatric tuberculosis (TB) cases in low-TB-incidence countries involve children born to migrant families. This may be partially explained by trips to their countries of origin for visiting friends and relatives (VFR). We aimed to estimate the risk of latent TB infection (LTBI) and TB in children VFR., Methods: We conducted a prospective multicentric observational study in Catalonia (Spain) from June 2017 to December 2019. We enrolled children aged < 15 years with a negative tuberculin skin test (TST) at baseline and at least one parent from a high-TB-incidence country, and who had travelled to their parent's birth country for ≥21 days. TST and QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus (QFT-Plus) were performed within 8-12 weeks post-return. LTBI was defined as a TST ≥5 mm and/or a positive QFT-Plus., Results: Five hundred children completed the study, equivalent to 78.2 person-years of follow-up (PYFU). Thirteen children (2.6%) were diagnosed with LTBI (16.6/per100 PYFU, 95%CI = 8.8-28.5), including two cases (0.4%) of TB (2.5/per100 PYFU, 95%CI = 0.3-9.3). LTBI incidence rates remained high after excluding BCG-vaccinated children (9.7/per100 PYFU, 95%CI = 3.9-20.0). Household tobacco smoke exposure was associated with LTBI (aOR = 3.9, 95%CI = 1.1-13.3)., Conclusions: The risk of LTBI in children VFR in high-TB-incidence countries may equal, or perhaps even exceed, the infection risk of the native population. The primary associated risk factor was the presence of smokers in the household. Furthermore, the incidence rate of active TB largely surpassed that of the countries visited. Fluoropyrimidines (FPs) are commonly prescribed in many cancer streams. The EMA and FDA-approved drug labels for FPs recommend genotyping the DPYD *2A (rs3918290), *13 (rs55886062), *HapB3 (rs56038477), alleles, and DPYD rs67376798 before treatment starts. We implemented the DPYD genotyping in our daily clinical routine, but we still found patients showing severe adverse drug events (ADEs) to FPs. We studied among these patients the DPYD rs1801265, rs17376848, rs1801159, rs1801160, rs1801158, and rs2297595 as explanatory candidates of the interindividual differences for FP-related toxicities, examining the association with the response to FPs . We also studied the impact of DPYD testing for FP dose tailoring in our clinical practice and characterized the DPYD gene in our population. We found a total acceptance among physicians of therapeutic recommendations translated from the DPYD test, and this dose tailoring does not affect the treatment efficacy. We also found that the DPYD *4 (defined by rs1801158) allele is associated with a higher risk of ADEs (severity grade ≥ 3) in both the univariate (O.R. = 5.66; 95% C.I. = 1.35-23.67; p = 0.014) and multivariate analyses (O.R. = 5.73; 95% C.I. = 1.41-28.77; p = 0.019) among FP-treated patients based on the DPYD genotype. This makes it a candidate variant for implementation in clinical practice.

The evaluation of the university experience of students is an increasingly frequent field of analysis among the academic community, as they represent one of the most important groups in universities and it is essential to know their opinion and satisfaction with the different services and resources that the university institution makes available to them. In this sense, the two objectives of the study were the following: 1) To analyse the undergraduate university experience of the different groups of students (graduates, students, drop-outs). 2) To identify which aspects of the academic training received predict each of the student groups. To this end, a study was carried out specifically aimed at undergraduate education students at the University of Granada (Spain), distinguishing between graduates, students, and those who had dropped out of their studies. A total of 292 students participated (82 female and 210 male), of whom 123 were graduates, 98 were still students and 71 were drop-outs. After the application of three questionnaires, it was found that the three aforementioned groups of participants coincided in particularly valuing characteristic dimensions of the formal teaching-learning scenario in the university experience. In addition, the linear regression analysis carried out identified the personalised attention factor as having the highest predictive value as regards student type. Thus, the results of the study point to an assessment of academic training focused on the need on the part of all three groups of participants for teacher support and individualised guidance. Background: Some studies have reported that polyamine levels may influence immune system programming. The aim of this study was to evaluate the polyamine profile during gestation and its associations with maternal allergy and cytokine production in cord blood cells in response to different allergenic stimuli., Methods: Polyamines were determined in plasma of pregnant women (24 weeks, N = 674) and in umbilical cord samples (N = 353 vein and N = 160 artery) from the Mediterranean NELA birth cohort. Immune cell populations were quantified, and the production of cytokines in response to different allergic and mitogenic stimuli was assessed in cord blood., Results: Spermidine and spermine were the most prevalent polyamines in maternal, cord venous, and cord arterial plasma. Maternal allergies, especially allergic conjunctivitis, were associated with lower spermine in umbilical cord vein. Higher levels of polyamines were associated with higher lymphocyte number but lower Th2-related cells in cord venous blood. Those subjects with higher levels of circulating polyamines in cord showed lower production of inflammatory cytokines, especially IFN-α, and lower production of Th2-related cytokines, mainly IL-4 and IL-5. The effects of polyamines on Th1-related cytokines production were uncertain., Conclusions: Spermidine and spermine are the predominant polyamines in plasma of pregnant women at mid-pregnancy and also in umbilical cord. Maternal allergic diseases like allergic conjunctivitis are related to lower levels of polyamines in cord vein, which could influence the immune response of the newborn. Background & Aims: Prenatal folate exposure may alter epigenetic marks in the offspring. We aimed to evaluate associations between prenatal exposure to folic acid (FA) in preconception and in utero with cord blood DNA methylation in long interspersed nuclear element 1 (LINE-1) and Alu short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs) as markers of global DNA methylation levels., Methods: Data come from 325 mother-child pairs participating in the Nutrition in Early Life and Asthma (NELA) birth cohort (2015-2018). Pregnant women were asked about supplement use, including brand name and dose, one month before pregnancy (preconception) and through the trimesters of pregnancy. Maternal dietary folate intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire with additional questions for FA supplement use. Folate serum levels were measured in mothers at 24 weeks of gestation and in cord blood of newborns. DNA methylation was quantitatively assessed by bisulfite pyrosequencing on 5 LINE-1 and 3 Alu different elements. Associations were estimated using multivariable linear regression models., Results: A reduction in methylation levels of LINE-1 in newborns was associated with the use of FA supplements below the recommended doses (<400 ug/day) during preconception (-0.50; 95% CI: -0.91, -0.09; P = 0.016), and from preconception up to 12 weeks of gestation (-0.48; 95% CI: -0.88, -0.08; P = 0.018). Maternal use of FA supplements above the tolerable upper intake level of 1000 ug/day from preconception until 12 weeks of gestation was also related to lower methylation in LINE-1 at birth (-0.77; 95% CI: -1.52, -0.02; P = 0.044). Purpose: Bacteriuria may affect the response to adjuvant therapy in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). The main aim of this study was to examine the effect of recurrent bacteriuria (RB) on the prognosis of NMIBC in women receiving intravesical therapy., Materials and Methods: We designed a prospective observational study from 2012 to 2019. We included women with bladder cancer treated with transurethral resection of the bladder (TURB) and adjuvant intravesical treatment. Significant bacteriuria was defined as a presence in urine cultures at or above 100,000 colony-forming units per millilitre. The recurrent bacteriuria group included patients with significant bacteriuria in at least two determinations in 6 months or in 3 or more determinations in a year. The institutional board approved the study., Results: One hundred thirty-six patients diagnosed with NMIBC participate in the study, of whom 100 met the inclusion criteria. During follow-up, 48 were categorized in the RB group and 52 formed the non-bacteriuria group (NB)., Rb Group Had a Better Outcome: Eight patients (16.67%) experiencing a recurrence of the same grade, with no progression to a higher-grade tumor or muscle-invasive tumor. In the NB group, 18 (34.6%) patients presented a recurrence (P = .001) and 22 (42.3%) progressed to a higher-grade tumor or muscular invasion (P = .001). The presence of RB was identified as a predictor of good response in multivariate regression with a relative risk of 0.13 (P = .018) CONCLUSIONS: Female patients with RB had a better response to adjuvant treatment for NMIBC. Food fraud is a major threat to the integrity of the nut supply chain. Strategies using a wide range of analytical techniques have been developed over the past few years to detect fraud and to assure the quality, safety, and authenticity of nut products. However, most of these techniques present the limitations of being slow and destructive and entailing a high cost per analysis. Nevertheless, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and NIR imaging techniques represent a suitable non-destructive alternative to prevent fraud in the nut industry with the advantages of a high throughput and low cost per analysis. This review collects and includes all major findings of all of the published studies focused on the application of NIR spectroscopy and NIR imaging technologies to detect fraud in the nut supply chain from 2018 onwards. The results suggest that NIR spectroscopy and NIR imaging are suitable technologies to detect the main types of fraud in nuts.

Introduction: The protocol for deceased donor kidney transplants has been standardised. The procedure for a living donor has peculiarities derived from the differences in the graft. When a living kidney donor program is implemented, changes occur in both the profile of the kidney transplant candidate and in the postoperative treatments., Aims: To discover whether a living donor program influences the functional outcomes of kidney grafts in a longstanding classical deceased donor kidney transplant program and to identify the factors associated with transplant outcomes., Methods: Retrospective observational multicentre study., Sample: Kidney transplant patients in two urology referral centres for renal transplant in Spain between 1994 and 2019. Groups: TV (living transplant): patients given kidney transplants from living donors ( n = 150); TCpre11 (deceased transplant previous to 2011): patients given kidney transplants from deceased donors before the living donor program was implemented ( n = 650); and TCpost11 (deceased transplant after 2011): patients given kidney transplants from deceased donors after the living donor program was implemented ( n = 500)., Results: Mean age was 55.75 years (18-80 years), higher in TCpre11. There were 493 female patients (37.92%) and 1007 male patients (62.08%). Mean body mass index (BMI) was 26.69 kg/m 2 (17.50-42.78 kg/m 2 ), higher in TCpre11. Mean ischemia time was 17.97 h (6-29 h), higher in TCpost11. Median duration of urethral catheter: 8 days (6-98 days), higher in TCpost11. Median duration of double-J ureteral stent: 58 days (24-180 days), higher in TCpost11. Pretransplant UTIs: 17.77%, higher in TCpre11 (25.69%) than in TV (12%), higher in TV (12%) than TCpost11 (9.2%), and higher in TCpre11 (25.69%) than TCpost11 (9.2%). Acute renal rejection in 9.33% of TV, 14.77% of TCpre11, and 9.8% of TCpost11. Multivariate analysis: TCpost11 featured higher BMI, more smoking, and chronic renal failure progression time. Lower use of nonantibiotic prophylaxis to prevent recurrent urinary tract infections, increased duration of urethral catheters due to obstructive problems, and favoured deterioration of kidney function was observed in the deceased donor program. The living donor (LD) program had a strong influence on deceased donor transplants in the prelysis phase. Implementation of a LD program was associated with a decrease in the likelihood of acute rejection in TCpost11 and an increase in the tendency towards normal kidney function., Conclusions: Implementing living donor transplant programs affects functional outcomes in deceased donor transplants, reducing the probability of acute rejection and increasing the tendency towards normal kidney function. Preventing recurrent urinary tract infections with measures other than antibiotics, smoking cessation, delaying the removal of the double-J stent from the graft, and pre-emptive transplant (transplant prior to dialysis) are associated with improved renal function of the graft.

Objective: To perform a comparative analysis of health care expenses and outcomes in response to the question: What is the cost-effectiveness of intralesional and perilesional recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) compared with hydrocolloid therapy in patients diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency without infection in Colombia?, Methods: A Markov model was used to determine cost effectiveness over a 5-year period, considering the perspective of the health system in Colombia. The study included patients aged >18 years diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency and used clinical studies to calculate the probabilities of epithelialization, infection, recurrence, and mortality., Results: RhEGF is more expensive per unit than hydrocolloids, but it is proven to be effective at healing ulcers in 8 to 12 weeks, even in complex cases. Hydrocolloids, in contrast, typically require 29.5 weeks on average, and ≤46 weeks for complex cases. Despite the cost, rhEGF is more cost effective because it achieves results comparable with hydrocolloid therapy at a lower cost per additional quality-adjusted life-year., Conclusions: Based on cost-effectiveness analysis, rhEGF is a superior alternative to hydrocolloids for treating venous ulcers in Colombia. Introduction: Mental disorders, smoking, or alcoholism and benign prostate disease are highly prevalent in men., Aims: To identify the relationship between mental disorders, smoking, or alcoholism and benign prostate disease., Methodology: A prospective multicenter study that evaluated prostate health status in 558 men from the community. Groups: GP-men who request a prostate health examination and whose medical history includes a mental disorder, smoking, or alcoholism prior to a diagnosis of benign prostate disease; GU-men who request a prostate health examination and whose medical history includes a benign prostate disease prior to a diagnosis of mental disorder, smoking, or alcoholism., Variables: age, body mass index (BMI), prostate specific antigen (PSA), follow-up of the mental disorder, smoking or alcoholism, time elapsed between urological diagnosis and the mental disorder, smoking or alcoholism diagnosis, status of the urological disease (cured or not cured), concomitant diseases, surgical history, and concomitant treatments. Descriptive statistics, Student's t -test, Chi2, multivariate analysis., Results: There were no mental disorders, smoking, or alcoholism in 51.97% of men. Anxiety, smoking, major depressive disorder, pathological insomnia, psychosis, and alcoholism were identified in 19.71%, 13.26%, 5.73%, 4.30%, 2.87%, and 2.15% of individuals, respectively. Nonbacterial prostatitis (31.54%), urinary tract infection (other than prostatitis, 24.37%), prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (13.98%), and prostatodynia (1.43%) were prostate diseases. Unresolved symptomatic benign prostate disease was associated with anxiety, depression, and psychosis ( p = 0.002). Smoking was the disorder that men managed to eliminate most frequently. The dominant disorder in patients with symptomatic benign prostatic disease was alcoholism ( p = 0.006)., Conclusions: Unresolved symptomatic benign prostatic disease is associated with anxiety, depression, and psychosis. Alcoholism is associated with a worse prognosis in the follow-up of symptomatic benign prostatic disease.

Objective: To show the effectiveness and safety of topical sevoflurane after ambulatory and prolonged administration in patients with refractory vascular ulcers., Methods: Retrospective observational study analyzing clinical improvement and vascular ulcers surface area variation after topical application of sevoflurane. Inclusion criteria were patients with painful vascular ulcers refractory to usual therapies and who were treated with topical sevoflurane for at least 36 months. The following variables were collected: age, sex, medical history, associated comorbidity, ulcer etiology and medical treatment. The visual analog scale was used to measure baseline and break through pain intensity before and after treatment., Results: Nine patients met the inclusion criteria of the total number of patients treated whose median age was 74.8 ± 7.5 years. Cases 2 and 9 died during follow-up. In all cases, the analgesic action of topical sevoflurane was rapid (3.1 ± 2.1 minutes), intense (visual analog scale: 7 ± 1.1 to 1.4 ± 1.1 points) and long-lasting (6 to 24 h). With the exception of case 4, all patients experienced a large reduction in vascular ulcers surface area (15.1 ± 5.0 a 2.7 ± 4.2) and tolerance was not observed over time., Conclusion: Topical application of sevoflurane is an analgesic and re-epithelializing strategy for vascular ulcers with a successful safety profile., (Copyright © 2023 Sociedad Española de Farmacia Hospitalaria (S.E.F.H). Besides direct mortality, wind farms also affect aerial fauna by modifying their communities, reducing species diversity and richness through disturbance. During three consecutive years, we used mist nets and acoustic recorders, and conducted carcass searches, to characterize the assemblage of bat species and to estimate bat mortality at two nearby wind farms sited <5 km apart in a highly biodiverse region. We asked whether the diversity, richness and evenness of the assemblages varied yearly, predicting it would decrease through time. Richness and evenness did not change, but the diversity of species recorded acoustically, 96% being aerial insectivores, was significantly lower the third year. We estimate 4 - 15.7 fatalities/MW/year by wind farm, with 63% of species found as carcasses being aerial insectivores. We found >40% of dissimilarity in the species composition of bat assemblages between wind farms despite the short distance between them, with species turnover accounting for more than half of the dissimilarity every year. Similarly, species turnover accounted for >15% of the dissimilarity in the composition of the assemblage of live bats (captured and recorded acoustically) and the assemblage obtained through carcass searches. Our findings suggest that nearby wind farms impact bat communities differentially and aerial insectivores disproportionally. Long term, multi-method surveys are needed to characterize bat communities in highly diverse regions and to evaluate the post-construction effects that wind farms have on them., (© 2023. Dose calculation plays a critical role in radiotherapy (RT) treatment planning, and there is a growing need to develop accurate dose deposition models that incorporate heterogeneous tumour properties. Deterministic models have demonstrated their capability in this regard, making them the focus of recent treatment planning studies as they serve as a basis for simplified models in RT treatment planning. In this study, we present a simplified deterministic model for photon transport based on the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) as a proof-of-concept to illustrate the impact of heterogeneous tumour properties on RT treatment planning. We employ the finite element method (FEM) to simulate the photon flux and dose deposition in real cases of diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) and neuroblastoma (NB) tumours. Importantly, in light of the availability of pipelines capable of extracting tumour properties from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, we highlight the significance of such data. Specifically, we utilise cellularity data extracted from DIPG and NB MRI images to demonstrate the importance of heterogeneity in dose calculation. Our model simplifies the process of simulating a RT treatment system and can serve as a useful starting point for further research. Background: Pathologic complete response (pCR) after multimodal treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) is used as surrogate marker of success as it is assumed to correlate with improved oncologic outcome. However, long-term oncologic data are scarce., Methods: This retrospective, multicentre study updated the oncologic follow-up of prospectively collected data from the Spanish Rectal Cancer Project database. pCR was described as no evidence of tumour cells in the specimen. Endpoints were distant metastases-free survival (DMFS) and overall survival (OS). Multivariate regression analyses were run to identify factors associated with survival., Results: Overall, 32 different hospitals were involved, providing data on 815 patients with pCR. At a median follow-up of 73.4 (IQR 57.7-99.5) months, distant metastases occurred in 6.4% of patients. Abdominoperineal excision (APE) (HR 2.2, 95%CI 1.2-4.1, p = 0.008) and elevated CEA levels (HR = 1.9, 95% CI 1.0-3.7, p = 0.049) were independent risk factors for distant recurrence. Age (years) (HR 1.1; 95%-CI 1.05-41.09; p < 0.001) and ASA III-IV (HR = 2.0; 95%-CI 1.4-2.9; p < 0.001), were the only factors associated with OS. The estimated 12, 36 and 60-months DMFS rates were 96.9%, 91.3%, and 86.8%. The estimated 12, 36 and 60-months OS rates were 99.1%, 94.9% and 89.3%., Conclusions: The incidence of metachronous distant metastases is low after pCR, with high rates of both DMFS and OS.
