Abstract

Speckle suppression in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is a key processing step which continues to be a research topic. A wide variety of methods, using either spatially-based approaches or transform-based strategies, have been developed and have shown to provide outstanding results. However, recent advances in deep learning techniques and their application to SAR image despeckling have been demonstrated to offer state-of-the-art results. Unfortunately, they have been mostly applied to single-polarimetric images. The extension of a deep learning-based approach for speckle removal to polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) images is complicated because of the complex nature of the measured covariance matrices for every image pixel, the properties of which must be preserved during filtering. In this work, we propose a complete framework to remove speckle in polarimetric SAR images using a convolutional neural network. The methodology includes a reversible transformation of the original complex covariance matrix to obtain a set of real-valued intensity bands which are fed to the neural network. In addition, the proposed method includes a change detection strategy to avoid the neural network to learn erroneous features in areas strongly affected by temporal changes, so that the network only learns the underlying speckle component present in the data. The method is implemented and tested with dual-polarimetric images acquired by Sentinel-1. Experiments show that the proposed approach offers exceptional results in both speckle reduction and resolution preservation. More importantly, it is also shown that the neural network is not generating artifacts or introducing bias in the filtered images, making them suitable for further polarimetric processing and exploitation., Comment: 23 pages, 32 figures

2. Exploratory Study on Didactic Aspects Used in Scientific-Technical (STEM) Dissemination Conferences for Students of Secondary Education

Abstract

The connection between education and a country's economic and social development is unquestionable, and science and technology-related careers are of particular importance. Given the lack of vocations in these degrees, a number of mechanisms have been used to attract students, including science and technology conferences in secondary schools. Focusing on this type of lectures, this article aims to analyse the didactic aspects used by university lecturers who deliver this type of lectures. To this end, 16 teachers were interviewed using a structured interview. From the qualitative analysis of the interviews, we reached a series of results and conclusions, among which we would like to highlight the following: teachers see these lectures as a form of scientific dissemination which also helps to promote the degree courses they teach and serves as a support for attracting students; when choosing the content of the lecture, they mainly take into account the secondary school curriculum, including striking aspects and the results of their own research; the mediums used are mainly visual and supported by Do It Yourself (DIY) techniques; the content is normally presented through presentations or practical laboratory exercises; finally, the documentation provided to students depends on the teacher giving the lecture, and there is no consensus on this point.

Abstract

The performance of model-based decomposition approaches rooted in the Freeman-Durden concept is an active research line in PolSAR field according to the considerable attention it has deserved along the last twenty years. Certainly, most of subsequent proposals have been driven by the only objective of getting a better qualitative balance among scattering mechanisms according to theoretical expectations. This idea is not a negative aspect per se, as has led to a more rigorous understanding of orientation effects in both urban and natural areas and hence to improved land cover classifications. However, an in-depth quantitative analysis on the output parameters is usually lacking in this topic. The attention has been mostly paid to the power of dominant contributions, whereas the accuracy and interpretation of other parameters useful for practical applications have been almost systematically overlooked. The questions that remain to be answered are: What is the actual role of all parameters describing the models? Can we assign them a consistent physical interpretation or are some of them acting just as fitting parameters? The present work aims to promote the discussion on these open issues regarding the quantitative assessment of model-based PolSAR decomposition schemes. To proceed with, we have simulated the coherency matrix according to one of existing general models and different scenarios. The inversion performance has been analysed in terms of the histograms of output parameters, standard deviation and bias. The analysis reveals that even the backscattering powers associated with all three basic scattering mechanisms are estimated with a non-negligible error higher than 10% for some cases. Despite these conclusions are subject to a particular model and inversion approach they suggest that a careful consideration of physically-based decompositions outcomes should be taken.

Abstract

A photochemical reactor was tested in an undergraduate teaching laboratory through the environmentally friendly aromatization of a 1,4-dihydropyridine, successfully using air as an oxidant, organic dye fluorescein as a photosensitizer, and sodium carbonate as a base. This experiment allowed students to be taught key concepts of photochemistry, organic photoredox catalysis, and green chemistry for the first time. Herein, we describe the making of the simple, yet robust, high-intensity blue LED photoreactor. The durable device was constructed with materials acquired at a hardware store and electronics shop.

Abstract

Mediterranean high-mountain lakes are being increasingly affected by strong Saharan dust deposition events. However, the ecological impacts of these severe atmospheric episodes remain largely unknown. We examined the effects of a strong Saharan dust intrusion to the Iberian Peninsula in 2022 on the physicochemical parameters and prokaryotic communities in sediments of nine high-mountain lakes of Sierra Nevada (Spain) located above 2800 m.a.s.l and in different orientations (north vs. south). A previous year (2021), with lower Saharan dust deposition with respect to 2022, was used for interannual comparisons. The strong dust deposition to the high-mountain lakes resulted in a significant increase in sediment nutrient availability which was linked to changes in the composition of prokaryotic communities. Decreases in alpha diversity and changes in beta diversity of prokaryotic communities were mainly observed in lakes located in the south compared to the north orientation likely because the former was more affected by the atmospheric dust deposition episode. Dust intrusion to the high-mountain lakes resulted in significant changes in the relative abundance of specific genera involved in important nutrient cycling processes such as phosphate solubilization, nitrogen fixation, nitrification, and denitrification. Saharan dust deposition also increased predicted microbial functionality in all lakes. Our findings show that severe atmospheric dust inputs to remote high-mountain lakes of Sierra Nevada can have significant biogeochemical and biodiversity consequences through changes in nutrient availability and prokaryotic communities in sediments of these freshwater ecosystems. This information contributes to understanding how Mediterranean high-mountain lakes of Sierra Nevada face strong intrusions of Saharan dust and their ecological consequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
