Abstract

Component reliability and performance pose a great challenge for interconnection networks. Future technology scaling such as transistor integration capacity in VLSI design will result in higher device degradation and manufacture variability. As a consequence, changes in the network arise, often rendering irregular topologies. This paper proposes a topology-agnostic distributed segment-based algorithm able to handle switch discovery in any topology while guaranteeing connectivity among switches. The proposal, known as Transparent Distributed Segment-Based Routing (TDSR), has been applied to meshes with defective link configurations.

Abstract

Deadlock-free dynamic network reconfiguration process is usually studied from the routing algorithm restrictions and resource reservation perspective. The dynamic nature yielded by the transition process from one routing function to another is often managed by restricting resource usage in a static predefined manner, which often limits the supported routing algorithms and/or inactive link patterns, or either requires additional resources such as virtual channels. Exploiting compatibility between routing functions by exploring their associated Channel Dependency Graphs (CDG) can take a great benefit from the dynamic nature of the reconfiguration process. In this paper, we propose a new dynamic reconfiguration process called Upstream Progressive Reconfiguration (UPR). Our algorithm progressively performs dependency addition/removal in a per channel basis relying on the information provided by the CDG while the reconfiguration process takes place. This gives us the opportunity to foresee compatible scenarios where both routing functions coexist, reducing the amount of resource drainage as well as packet injection halting.

Abstract

Artificial light at night is a relevant environmental stressor whose unwanted consequences have been documented by a growing body of research. In this work we analize the loss of the natural darkness of the night in aquaculture farms located in shallow waters close to the shoreline, in the Atlantic coast of Galicia. High-luminance LED lampposts are switched-on the whole night long for surveillance purposes, significantly increasing the light levels throughout the whole water column, from the surface to the seabed. Measured in terms of the weighted radiance associated with the significant magnitude m1/3, the zenithal brightness at these locations is 125 times higher than should correspond to a pristine natural site. Given the potential severity of the environmental effects of artificial light at night, the dubious efficacy of light per se as a theft deterrence factor, and the availability of more efficient and environmentally friendly technologies for surveillance, the use of permanent floodlight sources in coastal areas is strongly discouraged and should be restricted as much as possible., Comment: ArXiv number added, otherwise identical to version 1

Abstract

SN 2016gkg is a nearby Type IIb supernova discovered shortly after explosion. Like several other Type IIb events with early-time data, SN 2016gkg displays a double-peaked light curve, with the first peak associated with the cooling of a low-mass extended progenitor envelope. We present unprecedented intranight-cadence multi-band photometric coverage of the first light-curve peak of SN 2016gkg obtained from the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope network, the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, the Swift satellite and various amateur-operated telescopes. Fitting these data to analytical shock-cooling models gives a progenitor radius of ~25-140 solar radii with ~2-30 x 10^-2 solar masses of material in the extended envelope (depending on the model and the assumed host-galaxy extinction). Our radius estimates are broadly consistent with values derived independently (in other works) from HST imaging of the progenitor star. However, the shock-cooling model radii are on the lower end of the values indicated by pre-explosion imaging. Abstract

Let G be a graph with no isolated vertex. A set D ⊆ V (G) is a total dominating set of G if every vertex of G is adjacent to at least one vertex in D. The total domination number of G, denoted by γt(G), is the minimum cardinality among all total dominating sets of G. In this paper we study the total domination number of total graphs T(G) of simple graphs G. In particular, we give some relationships that exist between γt(T(G)) and other domination parameters of G and of some well-known graph operators on G. Abstract

The aim of this research has been to analyse how the method employed for lending can affect the cost efficiency of microfinance institutions (MFIs) since innovations for lending have been introduced in the sector in the last years and there are not empirical studies to analyse the actual impact of it. The improvement of MFIs' cost efficiency is very important for these institutions to achieve their financial self‐sufficiency and be sustainable in the long run. The data employed in this analysis have been an unbalanced panel composed of a sample of 1017 MFIs for the 2008–2018 period and collected from the microfinance information exchange (MIX) database. Our results also show that community or group‐lending methods, as village banking and solidarity groups, have a positive effect on the MFIs' cost efficiency versus traditional methods based on individual lending. In addition, we have found that MFIs with a higher proportion of borrowers in rural areas are more cost efficient than institutions with more borrowers in urban areas, although community or group‐lending methods have a larger positive effect on MFIs' cost efficiency in urban than in rural areas.
