1. Quantum state preparation for multivariate functions

Abstract

A fundamental step of any quantum algorithm is the preparation of qubit registers in a suitable initial state. Often qubit registers represent a discretization of continuous variables and the initial state is defined by a multivariate function. We develop protocols for preparing quantum states whose amplitudes encode multivariate functions by linearly combining block-encodings of Fourier and Chebyshev basis functions. Without relying on arithmetic circuits, quantum Fourier transforms, or multivariate quantum signal processing, our algorithms are simpler and more effective than previous proposals. We analyze requirements both asymptotically and pragmatically in terms of near/medium-term resources. Numerically, we prepare bivariate Student's t-distributions, 2D Ricker wavelets and electron wavefunctions in a 3D Coulomb potential, which are initial states with potential applications in finance, physics and chemistry simulations. Finally, we prepare bivariate Gaussian distributions on the Quantinuum H2-1 trapped-ion quantum processor using 24 qubits and up to 237 two-qubit gates., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

2. Performance analysis of a filtering variational quantum algorithm

Abstract

Even a minor boost in solving combinatorial optimization problems can greatly benefit multiple industries. Quantum computers, with their unique information processing capabilities, hold promise for delivering such enhancements. The Filtering Variational Quantum Eigensolver (F-VQE) is a variational hybrid quantum algorithm designed to solve combinatorial optimization problems on existing quantum computers with limited qubit number, connectivity, and fidelity. In this work we employ Instantaneous Quantum Polynomial circuits as our parameterized quantum circuits. We propose a hardware-efficient implementation that respects limited qubit connectivity and show that they halve the number of circuits necessary to evaluate the gradient with the parameter-shift rule. To assess the potential of this protocol in the context of combinatorial optimization, we conduct extensive numerical analysis. We compare the performance against three classical baseline algorithms on weighted MaxCut and the Asymmetric Traveling Salesperson Problem (ATSP). We employ noiseless simulators for problems encoded on 13 to 29 qubits, and up to 37 qubits on the IBMQ real quantum devices. The ATSP encoding employed reduces the number of qubits and avoids the need of constraints compared to the standard QUBO / Ising model. Despite some observed positive signs, we conclude that significant development is necessary for a practical advantage with F-VQE.

7. Quantum algorithms for approximate function loading

Abstract

Loading classical data into quantum computers represents an essential stage in many relevant quantum algorithms, especially in the field of quantum machine learning. Therefore, the inefficiency of this loading process means a major bottleneck for the application of these algorithms. Here, we introduce two approximate quantum-state preparation methods for the NISQ era inspired by the Grover-Rudolph algorithm, which partially solve the problem of loading real functions. Indeed, by allowing for an infidelity $\epsilon$ and under certain smoothness conditions, we prove that the complexity of the implementation of the Grover-Rudolph algorithm without ancillary qubits, first introduced by M\"ott\"onen $\textit{et al}$, results into $\mathcal{O}(2^{k_0(\epsilon)})$, with $n$ the number of qubits and $k_0(\epsilon)$ asymptotically independent of $n$. This leads to a dramatic reduction in the number of required two-qubit gates. Aroused by this result, we also propose a variational algorithm capable of loading functions beyond the aforementioned smoothness conditions. Our variational Ansatz is explicitly tailored to the landscape of the function, leading to a quasi-optimized number of hyperparameters. This allows us to achieve high fidelity in the loaded state with high speed convergence for the studied examples.

Abstract

In this paper, we explore a process called neural teleportation, a mathematical consequence of applying quiver representation theory to neural networks. Neural teleportation "teleports" a network to a new position in the weight space and preserves its function. This phenomenon comes directly from the definitions of representation theory applied to neural networks and it turns out to be a very simple operation that has remarkable properties. We shed light on surprising and counter-intuitive consequences neural teleportation has on the loss landscape. In particular, we show that teleportation can be used to explore loss level curves, that it changes the local loss landscape, sharpens global minima and boosts back-propagated gradients at any moment during the learning process. Abstract

Understanding how climate change will affect oceanic fluid transport is crucial for environmental applications and human activities. However, a synoptic characterization of the influence of climate change on mesoscale stirring and transport in the surface ocean is missing. To bridge this gap, we exploit a high-resolution, fully-coupled climate model of the Mediterranean basin using a Network Theory approach. We project significant increases of horizontal stirring and kinetic energies in the next century, likely due to increments of available potential energy. The future evolution of basin-scale transport patterns hint at a rearrangement of the main hydrodynamic provinces, defined as regions of the surface ocean that are well-mixed internally but with minimal cross-flow across their boundaries. This results in increased heterogeneity of province sizes and stronger mixing in their interiors. Our approach can be readily applied to other oceanic regions, providing information for the present and future marine spatial planning.

19. 'Productive Failure' and 'Learning through Argumentation': Building a Bridge between Two Research Traditions to Understand the Process of Peer Learning

Abstract

Empirical evidence demonstrates the effect of productive failure (Kapur, 2008) on disciplinary knowledge. However, there is no clear theoretical explanation for why this is the case. Empirical evidence on argumentation and education shows the impact of curricular embedded deliberative argumentation on learning. However, these two trends of research have been mainly isolated, with insufficient synergy. Through the analysis of a group of sixth-graders collaborating around problems of natural selection, the aim of this paper is the theoretical exploration of the process of learning in productive failure designs through a focus on argumentative peer dialogue. The paper proposes an articulation of these two fields of research (productive failure and argumentation), which sheds light on both the learning dynamics in productive failure settings and the relevant insights for argumentative designs. The new possibilities for empirical research on learning through peer interaction opened up by these interconnected fields of research are proposed and discussed.

Abstract

Abstract Background COVID-19 has quickly become a global pandemic with a substantial number of deaths and is a considerable burden for healthcare systems worldwide. Although most cases are paucisymptomatic and limited to the viral infection-related symptoms, some patients evolve to a second phase, with an impaired inflammatory response (cytokine storm) that may lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome and death. This is thought to be caused by increased bradykinin synthesis. Methods ICAT-COVID is a multicenter, randomized, open-label, proof-of-concept phase II clinical trial assessing the clinical efficacy and safety of adding icatibant to the standard of care in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 without invasive mechanical ventilation. Patients hospitalized with a confirmed COVID-19 pneumonia diagnosis (RT-PCR or antigen test ≤ 10 days prior to randomization, and radiographic evidence of pulmonary infiltrates), rated “4” or “5” on the WHO’s clinical status scale, are eligible. Patients will be randomized on a 1:1 ratio to either standard of care-plus-icatibant (experimental group) or to standard of care alone (control group). The experimental group will receive 30 mg of icatibant subcutaneously 3 times a day for 3 days (for a total of 9 doses). The expected sample size is 120 patients (60 per group) from 2 sites in Spain. Primary outcomes are the efficacy and safety of Icatibant. The main efficacy outcome is the number of patients reaching grades “2” or “1” on the WHO scale within 10 days of starting treatment. Secondary outcomes include “long-term efficacy”: number of patients discharged who do not present COVID-19-related relapse or comorbidity up until 28 days after discharge, and mortality. Discussion Icatibant, a bradykinin type 2 receptor antagonist with proven effectiveness and safety against hereditary angioedema attacks, may be beneficial for COVID-19 patients by inhibiting bradykinin’s action on endothelial cells and by inhibiting the SARS-CoV-2 M protease. Our working hypothesis is that treatment with standard of care-plus-icatibant is effective and safe to treat patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 admitted to hospital for pneumonia without invasive mechanical ventilation. Abstract

The present investigation addresses the mechanical properties, wear behaviour, and high-temperature oxidation of cermets and hardmetals based on either Ti(C,N) or WC and a metal binder based on Fe15Ni or Fe15Ni10Cr. This study also includes a commercial-grade WC-Co for comparative purposes. The production of these materials involved a powder metallurgy and sinter-HIP processing route under identical conditions. It is found that WC-based materials have superior mechanical properties, including hardness, fracture toughness, transversal rupture strength (TRS), and wear response, compared to Ti(C,N)-based materials. However, the latter show better oxidation behaviour than the former. Notably, WC-FeNi exhibits a higher hardness and TRS than the commercial-grade material (an increase of 7% and 9%, respectively). The difference in wear behaviour is due to the difference in wear mechanisms. In this regard, cermets wear through a tribolayer of Ti and Fe oxides, while hardmetals primarily wear through abrasion from ploughing. Thus, hardmetals exhibit a lower coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate than cermets. Furthermore, Ti(C,N)-based materials form a protective layer of TiO2, which enhances their integrity and reduces mass gain. Abstract

In recent years, the use of applications to improve dietary habits has increased. Although numerous nutrition apps are available on the market, only few have been developed by health and nutrition professionals based on scientific evidence and subsequently tested to prove their usability. The main objective of this study was to design, develop, and evaluate the usability of a tailored nutrition application to be used to promote healthy eating habits. In order to decide app design and content, three focus groups took place with fifteen professionals from primary healthcare, nutrition, and food science and computer science, as well as expert users. For the general and feedback message design, a reference model based on the scientific literature was developed. To address the multi-perspective approach of users' and external healthcare professionals' feedback, a one-day pilot testing with potential users and healthcare professionals was conducted with four focus groups. To evaluate the relevance and potential usability of the app a 1-month pilot test was conducted in a real-life environment. A total of 42 volunteers participated in the one-day pilot testing, and 39 potential users participated in the 1-month pilot test. The SAlBi educa app developed includes an online dietary record, a self-monitoring tool to evaluate dietary patterns, general and feedback messages, and examples of traditional Mediterranean recipes. The usability study showed that volunteers think that SAlBi educa is pleasant (59%) and easy to learn to use (94%). Over 84% of the volunteers declared that the nutritional messages were clear and useful. Volunteers stated that general and tailored recommendations, as well as self-monitoring, were SAlBi educa's most motivating and useful features. SAlBi educa is an innovative, user-friendly nutritional education tool with the potential to engage and help individuals to follow dietary habits based on the Mediterranean model.

Abstract

The first hours of life of a sick or premature newborn are crucial for its prognosis and therefore delivery should take place in a center prepared for that degree of complexity. When this condition is not met, the newborn must be transferred in an optimal and safe way to the center that can offer the necessary care. The training, staffing, organization and coordination of the neonatal transport team are essential to guarantee a safe transfer. Being aware of the interest and the advances that are currently taking place in this area of ​​pediatrics, the Standards Commission and the Neonatal Transport Commission of the Spanish Society of Neonatology have prepared this document. In it, both the provision of human and material resources necessary as well as the bases of clinical stabilization in transport to carry out the neonatal transfer in a safe way and proportionate to the needs of the critical newborn have been exhaustively reviewed and detailed. Resumen: Las primeras horas de vida de un recién nacido enfermo o prematuro son cruciales para su pronóstico y por lo tanto el parto debería acontecer en un centro preparado para ese grado de complejidad. Cuando no se cumple esta condición, el recién nacido debe ser trasladado de un modo óptimo y seguro al centro que pueda ofrecerle los cuidados necesarios. La formación, dotación, organización y coordinación del equipo de transporte neonatal son indispensables para garantizar un traslado en condiciones. Siendo conscientes del interés y los avances que en la actualidad se están produciendo en esta área de la pediatría, la Comisión de Estándares y la Comisión de Transporte Neonatal de la Sociedad Española de Neonatología han elaborado el presente documento. En él, se ha revisado y detallado de forma exhaustiva tanto la dotación de recursos humanos y materiales necesarios como las bases de la estabilización clínica en transporte para llevar a cabo el traslado neonatal de forma segura y proporcionada a las necesidades del recién nacido crítico.

Abstract

Promoting a healthy diet is a relevant strategy for preventing non-communicable diseases. This study aims to evaluate the impact of an innovative tool, the SAlBi educa nutrition app, in primary healthcare dietary counseling to improve dietary profiles as well as adherence to the Mediterranean diet. A multi-center randomized control trial comprising 104 participants was performed. Both control (n = 49) and intervention (n = 55) groups attended four once-weekly sessions focusing on healthy eating habits and physical activity, over one month. As well as attending the meetings, the intervention group used the app, which provides self-monitoring and tailored dietary advice based on the Mediterranean diet model. In a second intervention (one arm trial), the potential of SAlBi educa was evaluated for three months during the COVID-19 pandemic. At 4 weeks, the intervention group had significantly increased their carbohydrate intake (7.7% (95% CI: 0.16 to 15.2)) and decreased their total fat intake (−5.7% (95% CI: −10.4 to −1.15)) compared to the control group. Significant differences were also found for carbohydrates (3.5% (95% CI: −1.0 to 5.8)), total fats (−5.9% (95% CI: −8.9 to −3.0)), fruits and vegetables (266.3 g/day (95% CI: 130.0 to 402.6)), legumes (7.7g/day (95% CI: 0.2 to 15.1)), starchy foods (36.4 g/day (95% CI: 1.1 to 71.7)), red meat (−17.5 g/day (95% CI: −34.0 to −1.1)), and processed meat (−6.6 g/day (95% CI: −13.1 to −0.1)) intakes during the COVID-19 pandemic. SAlBi educa is a useful tool to support nutrition counseling in primary healthcare, including in special situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Trial registration: ISRCTN57186362.
