12. Intraspecific variation in seed germination and storage behaviour of Cordia tree species of subtropical montane forests of Argentina: Implications for ex situ conservation

Abstract

Cordia americana, C. saccelia and C. trichotoma are native trees of the subtropical Andean forests of Argentina. Due to their high value as a wood source, these species are under threat from the over-exploitation of their populations and from changes in land use. Knowledge of seed biology may contribute to clarifying their regeneration ecology and establishing management policies and conservation programmes. We studied seed mass, seed germination, seed desiccation tolerance and seed storage behaviour in seeds from different populations of each species. Seed mass differed among the populations of each species. For C. americana and C. saccelia, germination percentages (GP) varied among populations and light and temperature conditions. For all species and populations, GP was not affected by seed population or desiccation treatments, but the time to germination (t50) increased after drying. GP decreased and t50 increased in seeds stored with 8–10% MC at 35 °C for three months for all species and populations. Seeds stored with 8–10% MC at 20 °C and with 3–5% MC at 35 °C also showed deterioration depending on the species. Differences in germination requirements, desiccation tolerance and storage behaviour were not related to seed mass. These results indicate that (1) all Cordia species seeds show orthodox storage behaviour, (2) both moisture content and temperature are key factors in Cordia seed storage and (3) some populations within a species are more sensitive to desiccation and storage conditions than others. Thus, these species and populations could be preserved in seed banks, but the germination, desiccation and storage behaviour variability among populations must be considered before germination and storage protocols are established. 24. Genotype-dependent responses of Andean and Coastal quinoa to plant population density for yield and its physiological determinants in Northwest Argentina

Abstract

Context In quinoa, similar yields are found under a wide range of plant population densities due to its phenotypic plasticity. Aims This study aimed to identify optimal plant population densities for achieving attainable yields, in relation to the most adapted genotype for a given environment. Methods Andean (RQ252 and RQ420) and Coastal (Titicaca and Puno) genotypes were tested at conventional (14plants/m2 ) and low (7plants/m2 ) plant population densities, in Dry Valley and Highland mega-environments for 2years. Key results More than 64% of total variation was explained by genotype, location, and interaction effects for grain yield, biomass, and harvest index. For these variables, the genotype×location×plant population density term presented the highest percentage of variation among triple and quadruple interaction terms. In the Highlands, grain yields decreased with plant population density for Andean genotypes (30–40%), in contrast to lower reductions for Coastal genotypes (9–20%). In the Dry Valleys, no effect of plant population density was found for all genotypes. In the Highlands, reductions in biomass and harvest index explained grain yield response, in parallel with increases in small grain percentage of up to 16% when frosts came early, related to uneven maturity at low plant population density. Conclusions Attainable yields in Northwest Argentina were achieved by exploring local adaptation and response to plant population density of Andean genotypes in the Highlands, in contrast to stable yields of Coastal genotypes through locations and plant population densities. Implications Understanding genotype-dependent responses to plant population density according to Northwest Argentina mega-environments can reduce yield gaps in quinoa production and refine breeding strategies.

25. Spatial patterns of dicot diversity in Argentina.

Abstract

In this paper, we analyzed the taxonomic diversity of the Argentine dicots to evaluate their relationships with area, latitude, and longitude. We also evaluated species diversity and higher taxa diversity relationships. The families, genera and species diversity in Argentine dicots was not explained by the area of each province but it varied through latitudinal and longitudinal gradients. The taxonomic diversity of these plants increased from high to low latitudes and west-east longitudes. These patterns would explain why the main diversity centers are located in the North region of this country. As we expected the species diversity and higher taxa diversity showed a positive relationship. At this scale, higher taxa diversity could be use as surrogate for species diversity.
