Abstract: Abstract Using e + e − collision data collected by the BESIII detector at BEPCII corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 30 fb −1, we measure Born cross sections and effective form factors for the process e + e − → Ξ 0 Ξ ¯ 0 $$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to {\Xi}^0{\overline{\Xi}}^0 $$ at forty-five center-of-mass energies between 3.51 and 4.95 GeV. The dressed cross section is fitted, assuming a power-law function plus a charmonium(-like) state, i.e., ψ(3770), ψ(4040), ψ(4160), ψ(4230), ψ(4360), ψ(4415) or ψ(4660). No significant charmonium(-like) state decaying into Ξ 0 Ξ ¯ 0 $$ {\Xi}^0{\overline{\Xi}}^0 $$ is observed. Upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the product of the branching fraction and the electronic partial width are provided for each decay. In addition, ratios of the Born cross sections and the effective form factors for e + e − → Ξ 0 Ξ ¯ 0 $$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to {\Xi}^0{\overline{\Xi}}^0 $$ and e + e − → Ξ − Ξ ¯ + $$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to {\Xi}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+} $$ are also presented to test isospin symmetry and the vector meson dominance model.

Abstract: Abstract The branching fraction of D + → K S 0 π 0 e + ν e $$ {D}^{+}\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^0{e}^{+}{\nu}_e $$ is measured for the first time using 7.93 fb −1 of e + e − annihilation data collected at the center-of-mass energy s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, and is determined to be B D + → K S 0 π 0 e + ν e = 0.881 ± 0.017 stat . ± 0.016 syst . % $$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^{+}\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^0{e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left(0.881\pm {0.017}_{\textrm{stat}.}\pm {0.016}_{\textrm{syst}.}\right)\% $$ . Based on an analysis of the D + → K S 0 π 0 e + ν e $$ {D}^{+}\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^0{e}^{+}{\nu}_e $$ decay dynamics, we observe the S-wave and P-wave components with fractions of f S-wave = (6.13 ± 0.27stat. ± 0.30syst. )% and f K ¯ ∗ 892 0 = 93.88 ± 0.27 stat . ± 0.29 syst . % $$ {f}_{{\overline{K}}^{\ast }{(892)}^0}=\left(93.88\pm {0.27}_{\textrm{stat}.}\pm {0.29}_{\textrm{syst}.}\right)\% $$ , respectively. From these results, we obtain the branching fractions B D + → K S 0 π 0 S − wave e + ν e = 5.41 ± 0.35 stat . ± 0.37 syst . × 10 − 4 $$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^{+}\to {\left({K}_S^0{\pi}^0\right)}_{S-\textrm{wave}}{e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left(5.41\pm {0.35}_{\textrm{stat}.}\pm {0.37}_{\textrm{syst}.}\right)\times {10}^{-4} $$ and B D + → K ¯ ∗ 892 0 e + ν e = 4.97 ± 0.11 stat . ± 0.12 syst . % $$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^{+}\to {\overline{K}}^{\ast }{(892)}^0{e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left(4.97\pm {0.11}_{\textrm{stat}.}\pm {0.12}_{\textrm{syst}.}\right)\% $$ . In addition, the hadronic form-factor ratios of D + → K ¯ ∗ 892 0 e + ν e $$ {D}^{+}\to {\overline{K}}^{\ast }{(892)}^0{e}^{+}{\nu}_e $$ at q 2 = 0, assuming a single-pole dominance parameterization, are determined to be r V = V 0 A 1 0 = 1.43 ± 0.07 stat . ± 0.03 syst . $$ {r}_V=\frac{V(0)}{A_1(0)}=1.43\pm {0.07}_{\textrm{stat}.}\pm {0.03}_{\textrm{syst}.} $$ and r 2 = A 2 0 A 1 0 = 0.72 ± 0.06 stat . ± 0.02 syst . $$ {r}_2=\frac{A_2(0)}{A_1(0)}=0.72\pm {0.06}_{\textrm{stat}.}\pm {0.02}_{\textrm{syst}.} $$ .

3. Surface Deformation Analysis by Fusion of Multi-temporal and Multi-source Data under Disaster Emergency Conditions

Abstract: Rapid analysis of surface deformation is crucial for rescue operations following natural disasters. However, the lack of recent terrain data and the discrepancy between data types and field-collected data often hinder timely surface deformation analysis. To enhance data usability, this paper proposes an analytical method that integrates multiple sources of remote sensing data, including satellite data, oblique photography data, and LiDAR data. By merging oblique images with grayscale point clouds, true-color point clouds are generated. The method optimizes old data through threshold segmentation and median filtering, then converts and unifies the resolution of multi-source data via data interpolation. Elevation interpolation matrices are employed for overlay analysis, and a combination of bilateral filtering and threshold processing is used. This groundbreaking approach enables the completion of surface deformation analysis in emergency geospatial surveys and has been validated in various typical regions, demonstrating its application potential across different surface environments. Experimental results indicate that this method can quickly utilize multi-temporal and multi-source remote sensing data to effectively identify surface deformations following natural disasters.

Abstract: Abstract A study of strange hadron production associated with hard scattering processes and with the underlying event is conducted to investigate the origin of the enhanced production of strange hadrons in small collision systems characterised by large charged-particle multiplicities. For this purpose, the production of the single-strange meson K S 0 $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ and the double-strange baryon Ξ ± is measured, in each event, in the azimuthal direction of the highest-p T particle (“trigger” particle), related to hard scattering processes, and in the direction transverse to it in azimuth, associated with the underlying event, in pp collisions at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 5.02 TeV and s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The per-trigger yields of K S 0 $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ and Ξ ± are dominated by the transverse-to-leading production (i.e., in the direction transverse to the trigger particle), whose contribution relative to the toward-leading production is observed to increase with the event charged-particle multiplicity. The transverse-to-leading and the toward-leading Ξ ± / K S 0 $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ yield ratios increase with the multiplicity of charged particles, suggesting that strangeness enhancement with multiplicity is associated with both hard scattering processes and the underlying event. The relative production of Ξ ± with respect to K S 0 $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ is higher in transverse-to-leading processes over the whole multiplicity interval covered by the measurement. The K S 0 $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ and Ξ ± per-trigger yields and yield ratios are compared with predictions of three different phenomenological models, namely Pythia8.2 with the Monash tune, Pythia8.2 with ropes and EPOS LHC. The comparison shows that none of them can quantitatively describe either the transverse-to-leading or the toward-leading yields of K S 0 $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ and Ξ ± .

Abstract: Abstract Using e + e − annihilation data sets corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.5 fb −1, collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.600 and 4.699 GeV, we report the first measurements of the absolute branching fractions B Λ c + → p K L 0 $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p{K}_L^0\right) $$ = (1.67 ± 0.06 ± 0.04)%, B Λ c + → p K L 0 π + π − $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p{K}_L^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}\right) $$ = (1.69 ± 0.10 ± 0.05)%, and B Λ c + → p K L 0 π 0 $$ \mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p{K}_L^0{\pi}^0\right) $$ = (2.02 ± 0.13 ± 0.05)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Combining with the known branching fractions of Λ c + → p K S 0 $$ {\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p{K}_S^0 $$ , Λ c + → p K S 0 π + π − $$ {\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p{K}_S^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-} $$ , and Λ c + → p K S 0 π 0 $$ {\Lambda}_c^{+}\to p{K}_S^0{\pi}^0 $$ , we present the first measurements of the K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ - K L 0 $$ {K}_L^0 $$ asymmetries R Λ c + K S , L 0 X = B Λ c + → K S 0 X − B Λ c + → K L 0 X B Λ c + → K S 0 X + B Λ c + → K L 0 X $$ R\left({\Lambda}_c^{+},{K}_{S,L}^0X\right)=\frac{\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {K}_S^0X\right)-\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {K}_L^0X\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {K}_S^0X\right)+\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^{+}\to {K}_L^0X\right)} $$ in charmed baryon decays: R Λ c + p K S , L 0 = − 0.025 ± 0.031 $$ R\left({\Lambda}_c^{+},p{K}_{S,L}^0\right)=-0.025\pm 0.031 $$ , R Λ c + p K S , L 0 π + π − = − 0.027 ± 0.048 $$ R\left({\Lambda}_c^{+},p{K}_{S,L}^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}\right)=-0.027\pm 0.048 $$ and R Λ c + p K S , L 0 π 0 = − 0.015 ± 0.046 $$ R\left({\Lambda}_c^{+},p{K}_{S,L}^0{\pi}^0\right)=-0.015\pm 0.046 $$ . No significant asymmetries with statistical significance are observed.

6. Exploring the sources of light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols by integrating observational and modeling results: insights from Northeast China

Abstract: Light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols are important contributors to both air pollution and radiative forcing. However, their abundances and sources remain poorly constrained, as can be seen from the frequently identified discrepancies between the observed and modeled results. In this study, we focused on elemental carbon (EC; as a measure of black carbon) and light-absorbing organic carbon (i.e., BrC) in Northeast China, a new targeted region of the latest clean-air actions in China. Three campaigns were conducted during 2018–2021 in Harbin, covering distinct meteorological conditions and emission features. Various analytical methods were first evaluated, and the mass concentrations of both BrC and EC were validated. The validated BrC and EC measurement results were then used for source apportionment, together with other species including tracers (e.g., levoglucosan). The observation-based results suggested that despite the frigid winter in Harbin, the formation of secondary organic carbon (SOC) was enhanced at high levels of relative humidity (RH). This enhancement could also be captured by an air quality model incorporating heterogeneous chemistry. However, the model failed to reproduce the observed abundances of SOC, with significant underestimations regardless of RH levels. In addition, agricultural fires effectively increased the observation-based primary organic carbon (POC) concentrations and POC to EC ratios. Such roles of agricultural fires were not captured by the model, pointing to substantial underestimation of open burning emissions by the inventory. This problem merits particular attention for Northeast China, given its massive agricultural sector.

Abstract: Abstract The processes h c → γP (P = η′, η, π 0) are studied with a sample of (27.12 ± 0.14) × 108 ψ(3686) events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The decay h c → γη is observed for the first time with the significance of 9.0 σ, and the branching fraction is determined to be (3.77 ± 0.55 ± 0.13 ± 0.26) × 10 −4, while B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (h c → γη′) is measured to be (1.40 ± 0.11 ± 0.04 ± 0.10) × 10 −3, where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second systematic, and the third from the branching fraction of ψ(3686) → π 0 h c . The combination of these results allows for a precise determination of R h c = B h c → γη B h c → γ η ′ , $$ {R}_{h_c}=\frac{\mathcal{B}\left({h}_c\to {\pi}^0\gamma \eta \right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({h}_c\to {\pi}^0\gamma {\eta}^{\prime}\right)}, $$ which is calculated to be (27.0 ± 4.4 ± 1.0)%. The results are valuable for gaining a deeper understanding of η − η′ mixing, and its manifestation within quantum chromodynamics. No significant signal is found for the decay h c → γπ 0, and an upper limit is placed on its branching fraction of B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (h c → γπ 0) < 5.0 × 10 −5, at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: Abstract Using e + e − collision data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies between 3.510 and 4.914 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 fb −1, we measure the Born cross sections for the process e + e − → K − Ξ ¯ + Λ / Σ 0 $$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to {K}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+}\Lambda /{\Sigma}^0 $$ at thirty-five energy points with a partial-reconstruction strategy. By fitting the dressed cross sections of e + e − → K − Ξ ¯ + Λ / Σ 0 $$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to {K}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+}\Lambda /{\Sigma}^0 $$ , evidence for ψ 4160 → K − Ξ ¯ + Λ $$ \psi (4160)\to {K}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+}\Lambda $$ is found for the first time with a significance of 4.4σ, including systematic uncertainties. No evidence for other possible resonances is found. In addition, the products of electronic partial width and branching fraction for all assumed resonances decaying into K − Ξ ¯ + Λ / Σ 0 $$ {K}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+}\Lambda /{\Sigma}^0 $$ are determined.

9. The water-insoluble organic carbon in PM2.5 of typical Chinese urban areas: light-absorbing properties, potential sources, radiative forcing effects, and a possible light-absorbing continuum

Abstract: Water-insoluble organic carbon (WIOC) constitutes a substantial portion of organic carbon (OC) and contributes significantly to light absorption by brown carbon (BrC), playing pivotal roles in climate forcing. China is a hotspot region with high levels of OC and BrC, but information regarding the sources and light-absorbing properties of WIOC on a national scale remains scarce. Here, we investigated the light-absorbing properties and sources of WIOC in 10 representative urban cities in China. On average, WIOC made up 33.4 ± 7.66 % and 40.5 ± 9.73 % of concentrations and light absorption at 365 nm (Abs365) of extractable OC (EX-OC), which includes relatively hydrophobic OC (WIOC and humic-like substances, HULIS-C) and hydrophilic OC (non-humic-like substances, non-HULIS-C). The mass absorption efficiency of WIOC at 365 nm (MAE365) was (1.59 ± 0.55 m2 (g C)−1) comparable to that of HULIS (1.54 ± 0.57 m2 (g C)−1) but significantly higher than non-HULIS (0.71 ± 0.28 m2 (g C)−1), indicating that hydrophobic OC possesses a stronger light-absorbing capacity than hydrophilic OC. Biomass burning (31.0 %) and coal combustion (31.1 %) were the dominant sources of WIOC, with coal combustion sources exhibiting the strongest light-absorbing capacity. Moreover, employing the simple forcing efficiency (SFE300–700 nm) method, we observed that WIOC exhibited the highest SFE300–700 nm (6.57 ± 5.37 W g−1) among the EX-OC fractions. The radiative forcing of EX-OC was predominantly contributed by hydrophobic OC (WIOC – 39.4 ± 15.5 % and HULIS – 39.5 ± 12.1 %). Considering the aromaticity, sources, and atmospheric processes of different carbonaceous components, we propose a light-absorbing carbonaceous continuum, revealing that components enriched with fossil sources tend to possess stronger light-absorbing capacity, higher aromatic levels, increased molecular weights, and greater recalcitrance in the atmosphere. Reducing fossil fuel emissions emerges as an effective means of mitigating both gaseous (CO2) and particulate light-absorbing carbonaceous warming components.

10. Estimation of biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions in forest ecosystems using drone-based lidar, photogrammetry, and image recognition technologies

Abstract: Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), as a crucial component that impacts atmospheric chemistry and ecological interactions with various organisms, play a significant role in the atmosphere–ecosystem relationship. However, traditional field observation methods are challenging for accurately estimating BVOC emissions in forest ecosystems with high biodiversity, leading to significant uncertainty in quantifying these compounds. To address this issue, this research proposes a workflow utilizing drone-mounted lidar and photogrammetry technologies for identifying plant species to obtain accurate BVOC emission data. By applying this workflow to a typical subtropical forest plot, the following findings were made: the drone-mounted lidar and photogrammetry modules effectively segmented trees and acquired single wood structures and images of each tree. Image recognition technology enabled relatively accurate identification of tree species, with the highest-frequency family being Euphorbiaceae. The largest cumulative isoprene emissions in the study plot were from the Myrtaceae family, while those of monoterpenes were from the Rubiaceae family. To fully leverage the estimation results of BVOC emissions directly from individual tree levels, it may be necessary for communities to establish more comprehensive tree species emission databases and models.

Abstract: This Letter presents the first measurement of the impact-parameter dependent angular anisotropy in the decay of coherently photoproduced ρ0 mesons. The ρ0 mesons are reconstructed through their decay into pion pairs. The measured anisotropy corresponds to the amplitude of the cos⁡(2ϕ) modulation, where ϕ is the angle between the two vectors formed by the sum and the difference of the transverse momenta of the pions, respectively. The measurement was performed by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC using data from ultraperipheral Pb–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sNN=5.02 TeV per nucleon pair. Different impact-parameter regions are selected by classifying the events in nuclear-breakup classes. The amplitude of the cos⁡(2ϕ) modulation is found to increase by about one order of magnitude from large to small impact parameters. Theoretical calculations describe the measured cos⁡(2ϕ) anisotropy and its impact-parameter dependence as the result of a quantum interference effect at the femtometer scale, arising from the ambiguity regarding which of the nuclei is the photon source in the interaction.

Abstract: Abstract Using e + e − collision data collected at the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.33 fb −1, we determine the absolute branching fractions of fifteen hadronic D s + $$ {D}_s^{+} $$ decays with a double-tag technique. In particular, we make precise measurements of the branching fractions B D s + → K + K − π + = 5.49 ± 0.04 ± 0.07 % $$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}_s^{+}\to {K}^{+}{K}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right)=\left(5.49\pm 0.04\pm 0.07\right)\% $$ , B D s + → K S 0 K + = 1.50 ± 0.01 ± 0.01 % $$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}_s^{+}\to {K}_S^0{K}^{+}\right)=\left(1.50\pm 0.01\pm 0.01\right)\% $$ and B D s + → K + K − π + π 0 = 5.50 ± 0.05 ± 0.11 % $$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}_s^{+}\to {K}^{+}{K}^{-}{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^0\right)=\left(5.50\pm 0.05\pm 0.11\right)\% $$ , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. The CP asymmetries in these decays are also measured and all are found to be compatible with zero.

Abstract: Abstract Using (27.12 ± 0.14) × 108 ψ(3686) events collected by the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 3.686 GeV, we search for the first time for two nonleptonic hyperon decays that change strangeness by two units, Ω − → Σ0 π − and Ω − → nK − . No significant signal is observed. The upper limits on their decay branching fractions are determined to be B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (Ω − → Σ0 π − ) < 5.4 × 10 −4 and B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (Ω − → nK − ) < 2.4 × 10 −4 at the 90% confidence level.

14. Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Glacier-DEM product derived from the Chinese stereo mapping satellites

Abstract: The Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is an important basic data for glacier research on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. With the rapid development of China 's stereo mapping satellite, it is possible to obtain high-precision DEM in the glacier area of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In this study, the stereo images and laser altimetry data of ZY-3 and GF-7 satellites were comprehensively used, and the matching and joint adjustment methods of laser elevation control points and stereo images were proposed. A high-precision DEM product in glacier area was established, and the elevation accuracy of DEM was verified by using UAV data and ICESat-2 data. The results show that the accuracy of GF-7 DEM is better than 1.5 m when the slope is less than 6 degrees, and the overall accuracy is better than 2.8 m. The accuracy of ZY-3 DEM is better than 3.5 m when the slope is less than 6 degrees, and the overall accuracy is better than 5.0 m. Compared with the open source DEM with medium spatial resolution, the DEM elevation accuracy based on domestic stereo mapping satellite images is better, and the grid is finer and more detailed to describe the texture characteristics of the end of the glaciers. Compared with the high spatial resolution data set HMA DEM, the ZY-3 DEM is slightly worse and the GF-7 DEM is better, and both the ZY-3 DEM and GF-7 DEM are better than the HMA DEM in terms of coverage integrity in the Qinghai- Tibet Plateau. Chinese stereo mapping satellites can generate high-precision DEM in the glacier area, and can provide more accurate and reliable terrain reference data than the existing open free data for the study of glaciers in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Abstract: Abstract Using 24.1 fb −1 of e + e − collision data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the Born cross sections and effective form factors of the e + e − → Σ + Σ ¯ − $$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to {\Sigma}^{+}{\overline{\Sigma}}^{-} $$ reaction are measured. The measurements are performed at center-of-mass energies ranging from 3.510 to 4.951 GeV. No significant evidence for the decay of the charmonium(-like) states, ψ(3770), ψ(4040), ψ(4160), Y(4230), Y(4360), ψ(4415), and Y(4660), into a Σ + Σ ¯ − $$ {\Sigma}^{+}{\overline{\Sigma}}^{-} $$ final state is observed. Consequently, upper limits for the products of the branching fractions and the electronic partial widths at the 90% confidence level are reported for these decays.

Abstract: Positive matrix factorization (PMF) has been widely used to apportion the sources of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) by utilizing PM chemical speciation data measured at the receptor site(s). Traditional PMF, which typically relies on long-term observational datasets of daily or lower time resolution to meet the required sample size, has its reliability undermined by changes in source profiles; thus, it is inherently ill-suited for apportioning sporadic sources or ephemeral pollution events. In this study, we explored short-term source apportionment of PM2.5 using a set of bihourly chemical speciation data over a period of 37 d in the winter of 2019–2020. PMF run with campaign-wide data as input (PMFref) was initially conducted to obtain reference profiles for the primary source factors. Subsequently, short-term PMF analysis was performed using the Source Finder Professional (SoFi Pro). The analysis sets a window length of 18 d and constrained the primary source profiles using the a-value approach embedded in SoFi Pro software. Rolling PMF was then conducted with a fixed window length of 18 d and a step of 1 d using the remaining dataset. By applying the a-value constraints to the primary sources, the rolling PMF effectively reproduced the individual primary sources, as evidenced by the slope values close to unity (i.e., 0.9–1.0). However, the estimation for the firework emission factor in the rolling PMF was lower compared with PMFref (slope: 0.8). These results suggest the unique advantage of short-term PMF analysis in accurately apportioning sporadic sources. Although the total secondary sources were well modeled (slope: 1.0), larger biases were observed for individual secondary sources. The variation in source profiles indicated higher variabilities for the secondary sources, with average relative differences ranging from 42 % to 173 %, while the primary source profiles exhibited much smaller variabilities (relative differences of 8 %–26 %). This study suggests that short-term PMF analysis with the a-value constraints in SoFi Pro can be utilized to apportion primary sources accurately, while future efforts are needed to improve the prediction of individual secondary sources. Additionally, future rapid source apportionment analysis can benefit from utilizing a library of source profiles derived from existing measurement data, thereby significantly reducing the time lag associated with receptor modeling source apportionment techniques.

Abstract: Abstract GCLiPP is a global RNA interactome capture method that detects RNA-binding protein (RBP) occupancy transcriptome-wide. GCLiPP maps RBP-occupied sites at a higher resolution than phase separation-based techniques. GCLiPP sequence tags correspond with known RBP binding sites and are enriched for sites detected by RBP-specific crosslinking immunoprecipitation (CLIP) for abundant cytosolic RBPs. Comparison of human Jurkat T cells and mouse primary T cells uncovers shared peaks of GCLiPP signal across homologous regions of human and mouse 3′ UTRs, including a conserved mRNA-destabilizing cis-regulatory element. GCLiPP signal overlapping with immune-related SNPs uncovers stabilizing cis-regulatory regions in CD5, STAT6, and IKZF1.

18. Barakat syndrome presenting as isolated sensorineural hearing loss

Abstract: Barakat syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disease caused by haplo-insufficiency of transcription factor GATA3 on chromosome 10p14. It is characterized by a triad of hypoparathyroidism, sensorineural hearing loss, and renal disease with high phenotypic heterogeneity. Here we report a case of Barakat syndrome in a newborn presenting with isolated sensorineural hearing loss. A comprehensive set of diagnostic tests, including blood work and imaging were unremarkable outside of the failed newborn hearing screening. Recognizing Barakat syndrome is clinically challenging given the highly variable presentation. Otolaryngologists should consider Barakat syndrome when evaluating patients presenting with isolated congenital sensorineural hearing loss.

19. A high-resolution marine mercury model MITgcm-ECCO2-Hg with online biogeochemistry

Abstract: Mercury (Hg) is a global persistent contaminant. Modeling studies are useful means of synthesizing a current understanding of the Hg cycle. Previous studies mainly use coarse-resolution models, which makes it impossible to analyze the role of turbulence in the Hg cycle and inaccurately describes the transport of kinetic energy. Furthermore, all of them are coupled with offline biogeochemistry, and therefore they cannot respond to short-term variability in oceanic Hg concentration. In our approach, we utilize a high-resolution ocean model (MITgcm-ECCO2, referred to as “high-resolution-MITgcm”) coupled with the concurrent simulation of biogeochemistry processes from the Darwin Project (referred to as “online”). This integration enables us to comprehensively simulate the global biogeochemical cycle of Hg with a horizontal resolution of 1/5∘. The finer portrayal of surface Hg concentrations in estuarine and coastal areas, strong western boundary flow and upwelling areas, and concentration diffusion as vortex shapes demonstrate the effects of turbulence that are neglected in previous models. Ecological events such as algal blooms can cause a sudden enhancement of phytoplankton biomass and chlorophyll concentrations, which can also result in a dramatic change in particle-bound Hg (HgaqP) sinking flux simultaneously in our simulation. In the global estuary region, including riverine Hg input in the high-resolution model allows us to reveal the outward spread of Hg in an eddy shape driven by fine-scale ocean currents. With faster current velocities and diffusion rates, our model captures the transport and mixing of Hg from river discharge in a more accurate and detailed way and improves our understanding of Hg cycle in the ocean.

20. High enrichment of heavy metals in fine particulate matter through dust aerosol generation

Abstract: Dust is a major source of atmospheric aerosols. Its chemical composition is often assumed to be similar to the parent soil. However, this assumption has not been rigorously verified. Here, we generated dust aerosols from soils to determine if there is particle-size-dependent selectivity of heavy metals in the dust generation. Mn, Cd, Pb and other heavy metals were found to be highly enriched in fine-dust (PM2.5) aerosols, which can be up to ∼ 6.5-fold. To calculate the contributions of dust to atmospheric heavy metals, regional air quality models usually use the dust chemical profiles from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) SPECIATE database, which does not capture the correct size-dependent selectivity of heavy metals in dust aerosols. Our air quality modeling for China demonstrates that the calculated contribution of fine-dust aerosols to atmospheric heavy metals, as well as their cancer risks, could have significant errors without using proper dust profiles.

21. Evolution and chemical characteristics of organic aerosols during wintertime PM2.5 episodes in Shanghai, China: insights gained from online measurements of organic molecular markers

Abstract: Organic aerosol (OA) is a significant part of urban fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and a lack of detailed knowledge of their sources has increasingly hindered the improvement of air quality in China in recent years, as significant reductions have been achieved in inorganic ion constituents. In this study, a wide range of organic molecular markers in PM2.5 were monitored with a bi-hourly time resolution using a thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatograph system (TAG) in urban Shanghai in winter 2019. The molecular marker data have provided a unique source tracking ability in characterizing the evolution of organic aerosols during nine wintertime episodic events. Episodes primarily influenced by local air masses were characterized with higher proportions in PM2.5 and mass increments of both primary and secondary OA. Rapid increases in both the absolute mass concentration and relative proportion were observed for primary and secondary OA markers, indicative of vehicle emissions (e.g., alkanes, hopanes, and 2,3-dihydroxy-4-oxopentanoic acid) and cooking activities (e.g., saturated and unsaturated fatty acids and C9 acids). In comparison, episodes under significant influences of transported air mass were typically associated with a predominant PM2.5 contribution from secondary inorganic aerosols and enhanced OA contribution from biomass burning activities. The latter was evident from the tracer data (e.g., levoglucosan, aromatic polycarboxylic acids, and nitroaromatic compounds). Secondary OA markers associated with later-generation products of the hydrocarbon oxidation process, such as C3−5 dicarboxylic acids, were the most deficient during local episodes, while notably enhanced during the episodes under the influence of transported air masses, reflecting the different extent and pathways of atmospheric aging processing. The ability to distinguish the variations in the OA evolution during different types of episodes demonstrates the value of online organic molecular measurements for episodic analysis. The results indicate that control of local urban sources such as vehicular and cooking emissions would lessen severity of local episodes, while regional control of precursors for secondary inorganic aerosols and biomass burning activities would reduce PM2.5 episodes under synoptic conditions conducive for regional transport.

Abstract: The accurate identification of elemental carbon (EC) sources in aerosol based on radiocarbon (14C) depends on the method of EC isolation. The lack of aerosol EC reference materials with “true” 14C values makes it impossible to evaluate the accuracy of various methods for the analysis of 14C-EC in aerosols. In this study, EC isolation methods were evaluated by using samples of mixed biomass burning, vehicle exhaust, and coal combustion. The results show that 14C-EC was not only related to the isolation method but also to the types and proportions of biomass sources in the sample. The hydropyrolysis (Hypy) method, which can be used to isolate a highly stable portion of ECHypy and avoid charring, is a more effective and stable approach for the matrix-independent 14C quantification of EC in aerosols. The 13C-ECHypy and non-fossil ECHypy values of Standard Reference Material (SRM) 1649b were −24.9 ‰ and 11 %, respectively.

23. Measurement report: Underestimated reactive organic gases from residential combustion – insights from a near-complete speciation

Abstract: Reactive organic gases (ROGs), as important precursors of secondary pollutants, are not well resolved as their chemical complexity has challenged their quantification in many studies. Here, a near-complete speciation of ROG emissions from residential combustion was developed by the combination of proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) with a gas chromatography system equipped with a mass spectrometer and a flame ionization detector (GC-MS/FID), including 1049 species in all. Among them, 125 identified species, ∼ 90 % of the total ROG masses, were applied to evaluate their emission characteristics through real combustion samplings in rural households of China. The study revealed that with 55 species, mainly oxygenated species, higher hydrocarbons with ≥8 carbon atoms, and nitrogen-containing species, previously un- and under-characterized, ROG emissions from residential coal and biomass combustion were underestimated by 44.3 % ± 11.8 % and 22.7 % ± 3.9 %, respectively, which further amplified the underestimation of secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAP) as high as 70.3 % ± 1.6 % and 89.2 % ± 1.0 %, respectively. The hydroxyl radical reactivity (OHR) of ROG emissions was also undervalued significantly. The study provided a feasible method for the near-complete speciation of ROGs in the atmosphere and highlighted the importance of acquiring completely speciated measurement of ROGs from residential emissions, as well as other processes.

24. The lncRNA Malat1 inhibits miR-15/16 to enhance cytotoxic T cell activation and memory cell formation

Abstract: Proper activation of cytotoxic T cells via the T cell receptor and the costimulatory receptor CD28 is essential for adaptive immunity against viruses, intracellular bacteria, and cancers. Through biochemical analysis of RNA:protein interactions, we uncovered a non-coding RNA circuit regulating activation and differentiation of cytotoxic T cells composed of the long non-coding RNA Malat1 (Metastasis Associated Lung Adenocarcinoma Transcript 1) and the microRNA family miR-15/16. miR-15/16 is a widely and highly expressed tumor suppressor miRNA family important for cell proliferation and survival. miR-15/16 play important roles in T cell responses to viral infection, including the regulation of antigen-specific T cell expansion and memory. Comparative Argonaute-2 high-throughput sequencing of crosslinking immunoprecipitation (AHC) combined with gene expression profiling in normal and miR-15/16-deficient mouse T cells revealed a large network of hundreds of direct miR-15/16 target mRNAs, many with functional relevance for T cell activation, survival and memory formation. Among these targets, Malat1 contained the largest absolute magnitude miR-15/16-dependent AHC peak. This binding site was among the strongest lncRNA:miRNA interactions detected in the T cell transcriptome. We used CRISPR targeting with homology directed repair to generate mice with a 5-nucleotide mutation in the miR-15/16-binding site in Malat1. This mutation interrupted Malat1:miR-15/16 interaction, and enhanced the repression of other miR-15/16 target genes, including CD28. Interrupting Malat1 interaction with miR-15/16 decreased cytotoxic T cell activation, including the expression of interleukin 2 (IL-2) and a broader CD28-responsive gene program. Accordingly, Malat1 mutation diminished memory cell persistence in mice following LCMV Armstrong and Listeria monocytogenes infection. This study marks a significant advance in the study of long non-coding RNAs in the immune system by ascribing cell-intrinsic, sequence-specific in vivo function to Malat1. These findings have implications for T cell-mediated autoimmune diseases, antiviral and anti-tumor immunity, as well as lung adenocarcinoma and other malignancies where Malat1 is overexpressed.

25. Measurement Report: Wintertime new particle formation in the rural area of the North China Plain – influencing factors and possible formation mechanism

Abstract: The high concentration of fine particles and gaseous pollutants makes polluted areas, such as the urban setting of North China Plain (NCP) of China, a different environment for new particle formation (NPF) compared to many clean regions. Such conditions also hold for other polluted environments in this region (for instance, the rural area of NCP), yet the underlying mechanisms for NPF remain less understood, owing to the limited observations of particles in the sub−3 nm range. Comprehensive measurements, particularly covering the particle number size distribution down to 1.3 nm, were conducted at a rural background site of Gucheng (GC) in the North China Plain (NCP) from 12 November to 24 December 2018. In total, five NPF events during the 39 effective days of measurements for the campaign were identified, with the mean particle nucleation rate (J1.3) and growth rate (GR1.3–2.4) being 22.0 cm−3 s−1 and 3.9 nm h−1, respectively. During these 5 d, NPF concurrently occurred at an urban site in Beijing. Sharing similar sources and transport paths of air masses arriving at our site to that of urban Beijing, we hypothesize that NPF events during these days in this region might be a regional phenomenon. The simultaneous occurrence of NPF in both places implies that H2SO4-amine nucleation, concluded for urban Beijing there, could probably be the dominating mechanism for NPF at our rural site. The higher concentration of sulfuric acid during many non-event days compared to that of event days indicates that the content of sulfuric acid may not necessarily lead to NPF events under current atmosphere. Only when the condensation sink or coagulation sink was significantly lowered, atmospheric NPF occurred, implying that condensation sinks (CSs) and coagulation sinks (CoagSs) are the dominating factors controlling the occurrence of NPF for the present rural environment of the NCP, which is quite similar to the feature seen in urban Beijing.

26. Ultra-high-resolution observations of persistent null-point reconnection in the solar corona

Abstract: Abstract Magnetic reconnection is a key mechanism involved in solar eruptions and is also a prime possibility to heat the low corona to millions of degrees. Here, we present ultra-high-resolution extreme ultraviolet observations of persistent null-point reconnection in the corona at a scale of about 390 km over one hour observations of the Extreme-Ultraviolet Imager on board Solar Orbiter spacecraft. The observations show formation of a null-point configuration above a minor positive polarity embedded within a region of dominant negative polarity near a sunspot. The gentle phase of the persistent null-point reconnection is evidenced by sustained point-like high-temperature plasma (about 10 MK) near the null-point and constant outflow blobs not only along the outer spine but also along the fan surface. The blobs appear at a higher frequency than previously observed with an average velocity of about 80 km s−1 and life-times of about 40 s. The null-point reconnection also occurs explosively but only for 4 minutes, its coupling with a mini-filament eruption generates a spiral jet. These results suggest that magnetic reconnection, at previously unresolved scales, proceeds continually in a gentle and/or explosive way to persistently transfer mass and energy to the overlying corona.

27. Impacts of land cover changes on biogenic emission and its contribution to ozone and secondary organic aerosol in China

Abstract: The greening impacts on China from 2000 to 2017 led to an increase in vegetated areas and thus enhanced biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions. BVOCs are regarded as important precursors for ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA). As a result, accurate estimation of BVOC emissions is critical to understand their impacts on air quality. In this study, the Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGAN) v2.1 was used to investigate the impact of different leaf area index (LAI) and land cover (LC) datasets on BVOC emissions in China in 2016, and the effects on O3 and SOA were evaluated based on the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system. Three LAI satellite datasets of the Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) MOD15A2H version 6 (MOD15), and the Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS), as well as three LC satellite datasets of the MODIS MCD12Q1 LC products, the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) LC products, and the CGLS LC products, were used in five parallel experiments (cases: C1–C5). Results show that changing LAI and LC datasets of the model input has an impact on BVOC estimations. BVOC emissions in China ranged from 25.42 to 37.39 Tg in 2016 and were mainly concentrated in central and southeastern China. Changing the LC inputs for the MEGAN model has a more significant difference in BVOC estimates than using different LAI datasets. The combination of C3S LC and GLASS LAI performs better in the CMAQ model, indicating that it is the better choice for BVOC estimations in China. The highest contribution of BVOCs to O3 and SOA can reach 12 ppb and 9.8 µg m−3, respectively. Changing the MEGAN inputs further impacts the concentrations of O3 and SOA, especially changing LC datasets. The relative difference between MCD12Q1 LC and C3S LC is over 52 % and 140 % in O3 and biogenic SOA (BSOA) in central and eastern China. The BSOA difference is mainly attributed to the isoprene SOA (ISOA), a major contributor to BSOA. The relative differences in ISOA between different cases are up to 160 % in eastern China. Therefore, our results suggest that the uncertainties in MEGAN inputs should be fully considered in future O3 and SOA simulations.

We identified the upregulated EN-RAGE gene program in airway and blood myeloid cells from patients with acute lung injury from SARS-CoV-2 or other causes across 7 cohorts. This program was associated with greater clinical severity and predicted future mechanical ventilation and death. EN-RAGEhi myeloid cells express features consistent with suppressor cell functionality, including low HLA-DR and high PD-L1. Sustained EN-RAGE program expression in airway and blood myeloid cells correlated with clinical severity and increasing expression of T cell dysfunction markers. IL-6 upregulated many EN-RAGE program genes in monocytes in vitro. IL-6 signaling blockade by tocilizumab in a placebo-controlled clinical trial led to rapid normalization of EN-RAGE and T cell gene expression. This identifies IL-6 as a key driver of myeloid dysregulation associated with worse clinical outcomes in COVID-19 patients and provides insights into shared pathophysiological mechanisms in non-COVID-19 ARDS.

Abstract: Recent advances in protein structure prediction using AlphaFold2, known for its high efficiency and accuracy, have opened new avenues for comprehensive analysis of all structures within a single protein family. In this study, we evaluated the capabilities of AphaFold2 in analyzing integrin structures. Integrins are heterodimeric cell surface receptors composed of a combination of 18 α and 8 β subunits, resulting in a family of 24 different members. Both α and β subunits consist of a large extracellular domain, a short transmembrane domain, and typically, a short cytoplasmic tail. Integrins play a pivotal role in a wide range of cellular functions by recognizing diverse ligands. Despite significant advances in integrin structural studies in recent decades, high-resolution structures have only been determined for a limited subsets of integrin members, thus limiting our understanding of the entire integrin family. Here, we first analyzed the single-chain structures of 18 α and 8 β integrins in the AlphaFold2 protein structure database. We then employed the newly developed AlphaFold2-multimer program to predict the α/β heterodimer structures of all 24 human integrins. The predicted structures show a high level of accuracy for the subdomains of both α and β subunits, offering high-resolution structure insights for all integrin heterodimers. Our comprehensive structural analysis of the entire integrin family unveils a potentially diverse range of conformations among the 24 members, providing a valuable structure database for studies related to integrin structure and function. We further discussed the potential applications and limitations of the AlphaFold2-derived integrin structures.

However, the sources of SOA precursor and atmospheric processes affecting SOAs are poorly understood. This limits our abilities to improve air quality and model aerosol-mediated climate forcing. Here, we use novel compound-specific dual-carbon isotope fingerprints (Δ14C and δ13C) for individual SOA tracer molecules (i.e., oxalic acid) to investigate the fates of SOAs in the atmosphere at five emission hotspots in China. Coal combustion and vehicle exhaust accounted for ∼ 55 % of the sources of carbon in oxalic acid in Beijing and Shanghai, but biomass burning and biogenic emissions accounted for ∼ 70 % of the sources of carbon in oxalic acid in Chengdu, Guangzhou, and Wuhan during the sampling period. The dual-carbon isotope signatures of oxalic acid and bulk organic carbon pools (e.g., water-soluble organic carbon) were compared to investigate the fates of SOAs in the atmosphere. Photochemical aging and aqueous-phase chemical processes dominate the formation of oxalic acid in summer and in winter, respectively. The results indicated that SOA carbon sources and chemical processes producing SOAs vary spatially and seasonally, and these variations need to be included in Chinese climate projection models and air quality management practices.

Abstract: Current chemical transport models fail to reproduce both the concentrations and temporal variations of organic aerosol (OA), especially the secondary organic aerosol (SOA), hindering the identification of major contribution sources. The fact that precursors of intermediate-volatility and semivolatile organic compounds (I/SVOCs) are not included in models has a significant impact on the performance of SOA simulation. Herein, we establish a high-resolution emission inventory of I/SVOCs and by incorporating it into the CMAQ model, concentrations, temporal variations, and spatial distributions of POA and SOA originating from different sources in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China were simulated. By incorporating I/SVOC emissions into the model, the modeled average SOA concentrations in the region increased by 148 %. Significant model improvements in the simulations of different OA components were demonstrated by comparison with comprehensive observation data. Furthermore, spatial and seasonal variations of different source contributions to OA production have been identified. We found that cooking emissions are predominant sources of POA in the densely populated urban area of the region. I/SVOC emissions from industrial sources are dominant contributors to the SOA formation, followed by those from mobile sources. Our results indicate that future control measures should be specifically tailored on an intraregional scale based on the different source characteristics to achieve the national goal of continuous improvement in air quality. In addition, local source profiles and emission factors of I/SVOCs, as well as SOA formation mechanisms in the model framework must urgently be updated to further improve the model performance and thus the accuracy of source identifications.

Abstract: Understanding the gas–particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) is of crucial importance in the accurate representation of the global budget of atmospheric organic aerosols. In this study, we quantified the gas- vs. particle-phase fractions of a large number of SVOCs in real time in an urban area of East China with the use of a CHemical Analysis of aeRosols ONline (CHARON) inlet coupled to a high-resolution proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS). We demonstrated the use of the CHARON inlet for highly efficient collection of particulate SVOCs while maintaining the intact molecular structures of these compounds. The collected month-long dataset with hourly resolution allows us to examine the gas–particle partitioning of a variety of SVOCs under ambient conditions. By comparing the measurements with model predictions using instantaneous equilibrium partitioning theory, we found that the dissociation of large parent molecules during the PTR ionization process likely introduces large uncertainties to the measured gas- vs. particle-phase fractions of less oxidized SVOCs, and therefore, caution should be taken when linking the molecular composition to the particle volatility when interpreting the PTR-ToF-MS data. Our analysis suggests that understanding the fragmentation mechanism of SVOCs and accounting for the neutral losses of small moieties during the molecular feature extraction from the raw PTR mass spectra could reduce, to a large extent, the uncertainties associated with the gas–particle partitioning measurement of SVOCs in the ambient atmosphere.

Abstract: Aerosol acidity plays a key role in regulating the chemistry and toxicity of atmospheric aerosol particles. The trend of aerosol pH and its drivers is crucial in understanding the multiphase formation pathways of aerosols. Here, we reported the first trend analysis of aerosol pH from 2011 to 2019 in eastern China, calculated with the ISORROPIA model based on observed gas and aerosol compositions. The implementation of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan led to −35.8 %, −37.6 %, −9.6 %, −81.0 % and 1.2 % changes of PM2.5, SO42-, NHx, non-volatile cations (NVCs) and NO3- in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region during this period. Different from the drastic changes of aerosol compositions due to the implementation of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan, aerosol pH showed a minor change of −0.24 over the 9 years. Besides the multiphase buffer effect, the opposite effects from the changes of SO42- and non-volatile cations played key roles in determining this minor pH trend, contributing to a change of +0.38 and −0.35, respectively. Seasonal variations in aerosol pH were mainly driven by the temperature, while the diurnal variations were driven by both temperature and relative humidity. In the future, SO2, NOx and NH3 emissions are expected to be further reduced by 86.9 %, 74.9 % and 41.7 % in 2050 according to the best health effect pollution control scenario (SSP1-26-BHE). The corresponding aerosol pH in eastern China is estimated to increase by ∼0.19, resulting in 0.04 less NO3- and 0.12 less NH4+ partitioning ratios, which suggests that NH3 and NOx emission controls are effective in mitigating haze pollution in eastern China.

Abstract: The dynamic erosion characteristics of pipe bends exposed to gas-solid two-phase flow are investigated by using an erosion-coupled dynamic meshing method to elucidate the erosion failure phenomenon that is common in pipe elbows, transporting coal fly ash and subjected to particle erosion. The static mesh is compared with the erosion-coupled dynamic mesh method by CFD. The dynamic erosion characteristics of bends with different r/D ratios, D and r are investigated before and after surface deformation under gas-solid two-phase flow. The results lead to the following conclusions: Improved performance of the erosion-coupled dynamic mesh by taking full consideration of the coupling between the erosion-induced surface deformation and the particle motion under prolonged erosion. The erosion rate at the elbow changes significantly upon surface deformation, and the sites with a high risk of erosion shift downstream. With increasing of deformation, the larger the r/D ratio, the more obvious the concentration of erosion location evolving downstream. As D decreases, the high-risk erosion areas become more concentrated. In particular, the emergence of the “bending increase” phenomenon leads to a different perception of how r/D ratio and the diameter affect erosion in static-grid simulations: a larger r/D ratio of the elbow makes it more sensitive to surface deformation and increases the erosion rate. This study leads us to consider the coupled deformation of erosion in the context of erosion problems, which has important implications for predicting the service life of overflow components.

Abstract: For bistatic inverse synthetic aperture radar (Bi-ISAR), the non-uniform motion state of maneuvering target and the time-varying bistatic angle make the traditional imaging method of moving target face the problem of translation compensation, and the traditional translation compensation method is not suitable for the return wave in the case of sparse aperture. In this paper, a compensation imaging method combining two-dimension joint linearized Bregman iteration and image contrast search is proposed. The translation compensation problem can be transformed into two-dimension joint compressed sensing sparse reconstruction and moving target motion parameter estimation. The proposed algorithm makes use of the gain of echo two-dimension compression, greatly improves the accuracy of translation compensation and the quality of target image and has strong robustness to noise. The processing results of simulation data verify the effectiveness and superiority of the algorithm.

Abstract: The Tangshan region is one of the most seismically active areas in the North China, and the 1976 M 7.8 earthquake occurred on 28 July near the Tangshan fault zone. The Matouying enhanced geothermal system (EGS) field is located ∼90 km away from the city of Tangshan. Since late 2020, preliminary hydraulic stimulation tests have been conducted at depths of ∼3965–4000 m. Fluid injection into geothermal reservoir facilitates a heat exchanger system. However, fluid injection may also induce earthquakes. In anticipation of the EGS operation at the Matouying uplift, it is essential to assess how the fault slip potential of the nearby active and quiescent faults will change in the presence of fluid injection. In this study, we first characterize the ambient stress field in the Tangshan region by performing stress tensor inversions using 98 focal-mechanism data (ML≥2.5). Then, we estimate the principal stress magnitudes near the Matouying EGS field by analyzing in situ stress measurements at shallow depths (∼600–1000 m). According to these data, we perform a quantitative risk assessment using the Mohr–Coulomb framework in order to evaluate how the main active faults might respond to hypothetical injected-related pore pressure increases due to the upcoming EGS production. Our results mainly show that most earthquakes in the Tangshan seismic region have occurred on the faults that have relatively high fault slip potential in the present ambient stress field. At well distances of less than 15 km, the probabilistic fault slip potential on most of the boundary faults increases with continuing fluid injection over time, especially on the faults with well distances of ∼6–10 km. The probabilistic fault slip potential (fsp) increases linearly with the fluid injection rate. However, the fsp values decrease exponentially with increased unit permeability. The case study of the Matouying EGS field has important implications for deep geothermal exploitation in China, especially for Gonghe EGS (in Qinghai Province) and Xiong'an New Area (in Hebei Province) geothermal reservoirs that are close to the Quaternary active faults. Ongoing injection operations in the regions should be conducted with these understandings in mind.

Abstract: Polysaccharides was extracted from foxtail millet using hot water at the appropriate agitation rate and liquid to material ratio. The changing situations of polysaccharides mass concentration in the extraction solution with the extraction temperature and extraction time were measured. The experimental data obtained were fitted with the second-order dynamic model; the dynamic and thermodynamic parameters were calculated and analyzed. The results showed that the higher the extraction temperature, the shorter the time needed to reach the extraction equilibrium and the higher the polysaccharides equilibrium mass concentration. The extraction process of polysaccharides could be described with the second-order dynamic model. The apparent activation energy value was 44.34 kJ·mol-1. When the extraction temperature increased from 323 to 363 K, the half-life period value was shortened from 33.4 to 6.2 min, and the internal diffusion coefficient increased from 2.43×10-9 to 1.36×10-8 m2·min-1. The enthalpy value and entropy value of the extraction process was 25.92 and 100.06 J·mol-1·K-1 respectively, and the Gibbs free energy value were all less than zero, indicating that the extraction process was an endothermic, entropy increasing, spontaneous and irreversible process. Increasing the temperature was conducive to the process.

Abstract: Rainfall has a substantial impact on urban traffic. Due to climate change and urbanization, rain and associated flooding will become an increasing hazard to urban traffic. Therefore, it is significant to detect road traffic anomalies and analyze their evolution. This study focuses on rainfall-sensitive roads, which have significant changes in speed and an apparent trend of change during multiple rainfalls. Firstly, the trajectory data are converted into road traffic time-series data, and the box plot is applied to determine whether there are significant outliers in roads speed. Secondly, the Mann-Kendall Trend Test is used to judge whether there is a noticeable trend change in the rainfall process. The proposed method is applied to Nanjing City in China. Based on the trajectory data from June to August 2019, the percentage of urban roads with significant changes in rainfall events is between 30% and 50%, with 217 roads that reveal significant changes every time. A total of 24 rainfall-sensitive roads are extracted by the trend test. This study will provide additional assistance for crucial road monitoring of urban rainstorm hazards.

Abstract: A flexible treatment for gas- and aerosol-phase chemical processes has been developed for models of diverse scale, from box models up to global models. At the core of this novel framework is an “abstracted aerosol representation” that allows a given chemical mechanism to be solved in atmospheric models with different aerosol representations (e.g., sectional, modal, or particle-resolved). This is accomplished by treating aerosols as a collection of condensed phases that are implemented according to the aerosol representation of the host model. The framework also allows multiple chemical processes (e.g., gas- and aerosol-phase chemical reactions, emissions, deposition, photolysis, and mass transfer) to be solved simultaneously as a single system. The flexibility of the model is achieved by (1) using an object-oriented design that facilitates extensibility to new types of chemical processes and to new ways of representing aerosol systems, (2) runtime model configuration using JSON input files that permits making changes to any part of the chemical mechanism without recompiling the model (this widely used, human-readable format allows entire gas- and aerosol-phase chemical mechanisms to be described with as much complexity as necessary), and (3) automated comprehensive testing that ensures stability of the code as new functionality is introduced. Together, these design choices enable users to build a customized multiphase mechanism without having to handle preprocessors, solvers, or compilers. Removing these hurdles makes this type of modeling accessible to a much wider community, including modelers, experimentalists, and educators. This new treatment compiles as a stand-alone library and has been deployed in the particle-resolved PartMC model and in the Multiscale Online AtmospheRe CHemistry (MONARCH) chemical weather prediction system for use at regional and global scales. Results from the initial deployment to box models of different complexity and MONARCH will be discussed, along with future extension to more complex gas–aerosol systems and the integration of GPU-based solvers.

Abstract: Suspended sediment plays a vital role in the regional and global cycling of carbon and nutrients by carrying carbon and nutrients from headwaters into lowland rivers and the oceans. Sediment transport through river systems is often fundamentally modified by human activities such as reservoir management. However, a physically based representation of sediment transport is still missing in most existing Earth system models (ESMs), which are essential tools for modeling and predicting Earth system changes. Here, we introduce a multi-process river sediment module for ESMs, which includes (1) hillslope soil erosion and sediment discharge into streams, (2) sediment transport processes through river networks, (3) reservoir operation based on the inflows from upstream areas and water demand from downstream areas, and (4) sediment trapping by reservoirs. All model parameters are estimated a priori without calibration. We apply this new sediment modeling framework to the contiguous United States and validate it against historical observations of monthly streamflow and sediment discharges at 35 river gauges. The model reasonably well captures the long-term balance and seasonal variations of suspended sediment in large river systems. Furthermore, our model results show that suspended sediment discharge in managed rivers is affected more by reservoirs' direct trapping of sediment particles than by their flow regulation. This new sediment module enables future modeling of the transportation and transformation of carbon and nutrients carried by the fine sediment along the river–ocean continuum to close the global carbon and nutrient cycles.

Abstract: Effective density is one of the most important physical properties of atmospheric particles. It is closely linked to particle chemical composition and morphology and could provide special information on particle emissions and aging processes. In this study, size-resolved particle effective density was measured with a combined differential mobility analyzer–centrifugal particle mass analyzer–condensation particle counter (DMA–CPMA–CPC) system in autumn 2019 as part of the Multiphase chemistry experiment in Fogs and Aerosols in the North China Plain (McFAN). With a newly developed flexible Gaussian fit algorithm, frequent (77 %–87 %) bimodal distribution of particle effective density is identified, with a low-density mode (named sub-density mode) accounting for 22 %–27 % of the total number of observed particles. The prevalence of the sub-density mode is closely related to fresh black carbon (BC) emissions. The geometric mean for the main density mode (ρ‾eff,main) increases from 1.18 ± 0.10 g cm−3 (50 nm) to 1.37 ± 0.12 g cm−3 (300 nm) due to a larger fraction of high-density components and a more significant restructuring effect at large particle sizes but decreases from 0.89 ± 0.08 g cm−3 (50 nm) to 0.62 ± 0.12 g cm−3 (300 nm) for the sub-density mode (ρ‾eff,sub), which could be mainly ascribed to the agglomerate effect of BC. ρ‾eff,main and ρ‾eff,sub show similar diurnal cycles with peaks in the early afternoon, mainly attributed to the increasing mass fraction of high material density components associated with secondary aerosol production, especially of secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA). To investigate the impact of chemical composition, bulk particle effective density was calculated based on measured chemical composition (ρeff,ACSM) and compared to the average effective density at 300 nm (ρ‾eff,tot,300nm). The best agreement between the two densities is achieved when assuming a BC effective density of 0.60 g cm−3. The particle effective density is highly dependent on SIA and BC mass fractions. The influence of BC on the effective density is even stronger than SIA, implying the importance and necessity of including BC in the estimate of effective density for ambient particles.

Abstract: Accurate monitoring of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and its distribution is of great significance for studying the carbon cycle and predicting future climate change. Compared to the ground observational sites, the airborne observations cover a wider area and simultaneously observe a variety of surface types, which helps with effectively monitoring the distribution of CO2 sources and sinks. In this work, an airborne experiment was carried out in March 2019 over the Shanhaiguan area, China (39–41∘ N, 119–121∘ E). An integrated path differential absorption (IPDA) light detection and ranging (lidar) system and a commercial instrument, the ultraportable greenhouse gas analyser (UGGA), were installed on an aircraft to observe the CO2 distribution over various surface types. The pulse integration method (PIM) algorithm was used to calculate the differential absorption optical depth (DAOD) from the lidar data. The CO2 column-averaged dry-air mixing ratio (XCO2) was calculated over different types of surfaces including mountain, ocean, and urban areas. The concentrations of the XCO2 calculated from lidar measurements over ocean, mountain, and urban areas were 421.11 ± 1.24, 427.67 ± 0.58, and 432.04 ± 0.74 ppm, respectively. Moreover, through the detailed analysis of the data obtained from the UGGA, the influence of pollution levels on the CO2 concentration was also studied. During the whole flight campaign, 18 March was the most heavily polluted day with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 175 and PM2.5 of 131 µg m−3. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) reported by a sun photometer installed at the Funing ground station was 1.28. Compared to the other days, the CO2 concentration measured by UGGA at different heights was the largest on 18 March with an average value of 422.59 ± 6.39 ppm, which was about 10 ppm higher than the measurements recorded on 16 March. Moreover, the vertical profiles of Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) and CarbonTracker were also compared with the aircraft measurements. All the datasets showed a similar variation with some differences in their CO2 concentrations, which showing a good agreement among them.

Abstract: Abstract Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) with high mortality rates is associated with an excess of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS) within kidney tissues. Recently, nanomedicine antioxidant therapy has been used to alleviate AKI. Herein, we synthesized ultrasmall Prussian blue nanozymes (PB NZs, 4.5 nm) as theranostic agents for magnetic resonance (MR)/photoacoustic (PA) dual-modal imaging guided AKI treatment. Results PB NZs exhibited multi-enzyme mimetic abilities, promoting the effective elimination of RONS both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, benefiting from their imaging contrast properties, the rapid renal accumulation of PB NZs was verified by in vivo PA/MR dual-modal imaging. Due to their excellent enrichment in the kidney and unique multi-enzyme mimetic abilities, ultrasmall PB NZs displayed superior AKI treatment efficacy compared with that of amifostine in two clinically relevant types of AKI induced murine models (either by rhabdomyolysis or cisplatin). Conclusion Our findings suggested ultrasmall PB NZs, as nanozyme theranostics, have great potential for AKI management. Graphic abstract

Abstract: The collective structure of 106Cd is elucidated by multi-step Coulomb excitation of a 3.849 MeV/A beam of 106Cd on a 1.1 mg/cm2 208Pb target using GRETINA-CHICO2 at ATLAS. Fourteen E2 matrix elements were obtained. The nucleus 106Cd is a prime example of emergent collectivity that possesses a simple structure: it is free of complexity caused by shape coexistence and has a small, but collectively active number of valence nucleons. This work follows in a long and currently active quest to answer the fundamental question of the origin of nuclear collectivity and deformation, notably in the cadmium isotopes. The results are discussed in terms of phenomenological models, the shell model, and Kumar-Cline sums of E2 matrix elements. The 〈02+||E2||21+〉 matrix element is determined for the first time, providing a total, converged measure of the electric quadrupole strength, 〈Q2〉, of the first-excited 21+ level relative to the 01+ ground state, which does not show an increase as expected of harmonic and anharmonic vibrations. Strong evidence for triaxial shapes in weakly collective nuclei is indicated; collective vibrations are excluded. This is contrary to the only other cadmium result of this kind in 114Cd by C. Fahlander et al. (1988) [38], which is complicated by low-lying shape coexistence near midshell.

Abstract: Evidence increasingly indicated that lung cancer incidence in female individuals continue to rise, and women have a higher risk to develop adenocarcinoma than men. Male and female individuals differ in their innate and adaptive immune responses, and there are sex differences in response to the PD-1/PD-L1-dependent blocking immunotherapy. Whether the differential expression of PD-1 between genders affect the response to blocking treatment is currently unknown. In this study, we examined sex differences in serum sPD-1, mPD-1 expression on T cells, and sex hormone levels in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Our results revealed a higher level of sPD-1 and expression of PD-1 on CD4+T cell in female patients than in male patients; we identified that serum sPD-1 level and the expression of mPD-1 on T cells were significantly reduced in NSCLC; we also found that serum testosterone level increased in female patients compared with control subjects and that increased testosterone downregulated the expression of mPD-1 on T cell. These findings provide a better understanding of the differences in PD-1 expression between genders in NSCLC patients and the effect of sex hormones on PD-1 expression and supply evidence for early lung cancer diagnosis and responsiveness to immune checkpoint inhibitors.

50. Emergence of an island of extreme nuclear isomerism at high excitation near 208Pb

Abstract: Metastable states with T1/2 = 8(2) ms in 205Bi and T1/2 = 0.22(2) ms in 204Pb, with ≈ 8 MeV excitation energy and angular momentum ≥ 22 ħ, have been established. These represent, by up to two orders of magnitude, the longest-lived nuclear states above an excitation energy of 7 MeV, ever identified in the nuclear chart. Additionally, the half-life of the 10.17 MeV state in 206Bi has been determined to be 0.027(2) ms, the next highest value in this highly excited regime. These observations indicate the emergence of an island of extreme nuclear isomerism arising from core-excited configurations at high excitation in the vicinity of the doubly closed-shell nucleus 208Pb. These results are expected to provide discriminating tests of the effective interactions used in current large-scale shell-model calculations.
