Search

Recent studies have found a striking positive correlation between the amount of dust obscuration and enhanced radio emission in quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). However, what causes this connection remains unclear. In this paper we analyse uGMRT Band-3 (400 MHz) and Band-4 (650 MHz) data of a sample of 38 $1.0 < z < 1.5$ QSOs with existing high-resolution $0.2''$ e-MERLIN 1.4 GHz imaging. In combination with archival radio data, we have constructed sensitive 4-5 band radio SEDs across 0.144-3 GHz to further characterize the radio emission in dusty QSOs. We find that the dusty QSOs (those with E(B-V) $> 0.1$ mag) are more likely to exhibit steep spectral slopes ($\alpha < -0.5$; $S_{\nu} \propto \nu^{\alpha}$) than the non-dusty QSOs (E(B-V) $< 0.1$ mag), with fractions of 46$\pm$12 and 12$\pm$4 per cent, respectively. A higher fraction of the non-dusty QSOs have peaked radio SEDs (48$\pm$9 per cent) compared to the dusty QSOs (23$\pm$8 per cent). We discuss the origin of the radio emission, finding that the majority of the peaked, predominantly non-dusty, QSOs have consistent sizes and luminosities with compact jetted radio galaxies. However, the connection between steepness and dust obscuration implies an outflow-driven shock origin for the enhanced radio more commonly found in dusty QSOs. Using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), the gravitationally lensed rings around the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in Messier 87 (M87) and Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) have now been successfully imaged at a resolution under 10 gravitational radii (R$_{\rm g}$ $ = \rm{GM/c^2}$). To expand studies beyond M87 and Sgr A*, we have constructed the Event Horizon and Environs (ETHER) sample, a comprehensive database encompassing approximately 3.15 million SMBH mass estimates, $\sim$ 20,000 Very-Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) radio flux densities, and $\sim$ 36,000 hard X-ray flux densities. This database is designed to identify and optimize target selection for the EHT and its upgrades on the ground and in space. We have identified a Gold Sample (GS) of nearby low-luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) within it that are ideal for studying jet bases and potentially imaging black hole shadows. We observed 27 of these AGNs using the EHT from 2022 to 2024, providing an opportunity to resolve and image accretion flows and jets at resolutions of $\leq$ 100 R$_{\rm g}$. Only a few SMBHs have sufficiently high enough flux density to be imaged at scales of $\leq$ 50 R$_{\rm g}$ with the present EHT. Among these are M87, Sgr A*, NGC4594 (Sombrero/M104), NGC4261, and NGC4374 (Messier 84/M84). Of these, NGC4261, Sombrero, and M84 have been observed and/or are scheduled for deep imaging with EHT+ALMA from 2023 to 2025. Sombrero, NGC4261, M84, NGC4278, and NGC5232 are clearly detected in our EHT+ALMA observations in 2022, indicating that the 230 GHz flux density from the accretion flows is significantly high. We present polarization images with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in A and B-array configurations at 6 GHz of 7 radio-loud (RL) quasars and 8 BL Lac objects belonging to the Palomar-Green (PG) `blazar' sample. This completes our arcsecond-scale polarization study of an optically-selected volume-limited blazar sample comprising 16 radio-loud quasars and 8 BL Lac objects. Using the VLA, we identify kpc-scale polarization in the cores and jets/lobes of all the blazars, with fractional polarization varying from around $0.8 \pm 0.3$% to $37 \pm 6$%. The kpc-scale jets in PG RL quasars are typically aligned along their parsec-scale jets and show apparent magnetic fields parallel to jet directions in their jets/cores and magnetic field compression in their hotspots. The quasars show evidence of interaction with their environment as well as restarted AGN activity through morphology, polarization and spectral indices. These quasi-periodic jet modulations and restarted activity may be indicative of an unstable accretion disk undergoing transition. We find that the polarization characteristics of the BL Lacs are consistent with their jets being reoriented multiple times, with no correlation between their core apparent magnetic field orientations and pc-scale jet directions. We find that the low synchrotron peaked BL Lacs show polarization and radio morphology features typical of `strong' jet sources as defined by Meyer et al. (2011) for the `blazar envelope scenario', which posits a division based on jet profiles and velocity gradients rather than total jet power., Comment: 32 pages, 19 figures, 6 tables, ApJ (accepted)

We present a study of molecular gas, traced via CO (3-2) from ALMA data, of four z< 0.2, `radio quiet', type 2 quasars (log [L(bol)/(erg/s)] = 45.3 - 46.2; log [L(1.4 GHz)/(W/Hz)] = 23.7 - 24.3). Targets were selected to have extended radio lobes (>= 10 kpc), and compact, moderate-power jets (1 - 10 kpc; log [Pjet/(erg/s)]= 43.2 - 43.7). All targets show evidence of central molecular outflows, or injected turbulence, within the gas disks (traced via high-velocity wing components in CO emission-line profiles). The inferred velocities (Vout = 250 - 440 km/s) and spatial scales (0.6 - 1.6 kpc), are consistent with those of other samples of luminous low-redshift AGN. In two targets, we observe extended molecular gas structures beyond the central disks, containing 9 - 53 % of the total molecular gas mass. These structures tend to be elongated, extending from the core, and wrap-around (or along) the radio lobes. Their properties are similar to the molecular gas filaments observed around radio lobes of, mostly `radio loud', Brightest Cluster Galaxies. They have: projected distances of 5 - 13 kpc; bulk velocities of 100 - 340 km/s; velocity dispersion of 30 - 130 km/s; inferred mass outflow rates of 4 - 20 Msolar/yr; and estimated kinetic powers of log [Ekin/(erg/s)]= 40.3 - 41.7. Our observations are consistent with simulations that suggest moderate-power jets can have a direct (but modest) impact on molecular gas on small scales, through direct jet-cloud interactions. Then, on larger scales, jet-cocoons can push gas aside. We present a comprehensive study of the molecular gas properties of 17 Type 2 quasars at $z <$ 0.2 from the Quasar Feedback Survey (L$_{[OIII]}$ > $10^{42.1}$ $\rm ergs^{-1}$), selected by their high [OIII] luminosities and displaying a large diversity of radio jet properties, but dominated by LIRG-like galaxies. With these data, we are able to investigate the impact of AGN and AGN feedback mechanisms on the global molecular interstellar medium. Using APEX and ALMA ACA observations, we measure the total molecular gas content using the CO(1-0) emission and homogeneously sample the CO spectral line energy distributions (SLEDs), observing CO transitions (J$_{up}$ = 1, 2, 3, 6, 7). We observe high $r_{21}$ ratios (r$_{21}$ = L'$_{CO(2-1)}$/L'$_{CO(1-0)}$) with a median $r_{21}$ = 1.06, similar to local (U)LIRGs (with $r_{21}$ $\sim$ 1) and higher than normal star-forming galaxies (with r$_{21}$ $\sim$ 0.65). Despite the high $r_{21}$ values, for the 7 targets with the required data we find low excitation in CO(6-5) & CO(7-6) ($r_{61}$ and $r_{62}$ < 0.6 in all but one target), unlike high redshift quasars in the literature, which are far more luminous and show higher line ratios. The ionised gas traced by [OIII] exhibit systematically higher velocities than the molecular gas traced by CO. We present here uGMRT band 4 (~650MHz) polarization images of 8 BL~Lac objects belonging to the Palomar-Green (PG) `blazar' sample. A large fraction of the sources (~63%) reveal core-halo radio structures with most of the polarization detected in the inner core-jet regions. PG1101+385 and PG2254+075 exhibit a `spine-sheath structure' in polarization. The core-halo and `spine-sheath' structures are consistent with the Unified Scheme suggestion that BL~Lacs are the pole-on beamed counterparts of Fanaroff-Riley (FR) type I radio galaxies. PG1418+546 and PG0851+203 (OJ287) show the presence of terminal hotspots similar to FR type II radio galaxies. They were also found to be low-spectrally peaked BL Lacs, supportive of the `blazar envelope' scenario for BL~Lacs and quasars. Fractional polarization ranges from 1-13% in the cores and 2-26% in the inner jets/lobes of the sample BL Lacs. Compared to the varied radio morphology of quasars from the PG `blazar' sample, the BL~Lacs appear to be less diverse. A comparison of the inferred core magnetic (B-) field structures on arcsec- (kpc-) scales w.r.t. the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) jet direction does not reveal any preferred orientation, suggesting that if large-scale ordered B-fields exist, they do so on scales smaller than probed by the current observations. However, the presence of polarized emission on arcsec-scales suggests that any mixing of thermal plasma with the synchrotron emitting plasma is insufficient to fully depolarize the emission via the internal depolarization process., Comment: 17 pages; 12 figures; MNRAS accepted

We report experimental measurements showing how one can combine quantum interference and thermal Doppler shifts at room temperature to detect weak magnetic fields. We pump ${}^{87}$Rb atoms to a highly-excited, Rydberg level using a probe and a coupling laser, leading to narrow transmission peaks of the probe due to destructive interference of transition amplitudes, known as Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT). While it is customary in such setups to use counterpropagating lasers to minimize the effect of Doppler shifts, here we show, on the contrary, that one can harness Doppler shifts in a copropagating arrangement to produce an enhanced response to a magnetic field. In particular, we demonstrate an order-of-magnitude bigger splitting in the transmission spectrum as compared to the counterpropagating case. We explain and generalize our findings with theoretical modelling and simulations based on a Lindblad master equation. Our results pave the way to using quantum effects for magnetometry in readily deployable room-temperature platforms.

With high-sensitivity kiloparsec-scale radio polarimetry, we can examine the jet-medium interactions and get a better understanding of the blazar divide in radio-loud (RL) AGN. We are analyzing the radio polarimetric observations with the EVLA and GMRT of 24 quasars and BL Lacs belonging to the Palomar-Green (PG) sample. The RL quasars show extensive polarisation structures in their cores, jets, lobes, and hotspots, whereas preliminary results suggest that BL Lacs exhibit polarisation primarily in their cores and inner jet regions. These findings imply that both intrinsic (central engine-related) and extrinsic (environment-related) variables are important in the formation of the blazar subclasses. The Fanaroff-Riley (FR) dichotomy can also be studied assuming RL unification and looking through the lens of blazars. We present polarization-sensitive images from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 5 GHz of 11 radio-quiet PG quasars. Based on the radio morphology, spectral index and polarization properties from the VLA study, coupled with the findings of our previous 685 MHz uGMRT data, we find the presence of low-power jets on sub-arcsecond and arcsecond scales in 9 sources; some show signatures of bent jets. The origin of radio emission remains unclear in the remaining 2 sources. Of the 11 sources, linear polarization is detected in four of them with fractional polarization ranging between 2% and 21%. In PG 1229+204, the inferred B-field direction is parallel to the local kpc-scale jet direction. The inferred B-fields are transverse to the weak southward extension in PG 0934+013. For PG 0050+124 and PG 0923+129, the relationship between the B-field structure and radio outflow direction remains unclear. Localized or small-scale jet-medium interactions can be inferred across the sample based on the VLA jet kinetic power arguments and polarization data. These may have the potential as a feedback mechanism. We find that the radio properties do not show strong correlations with the star formation, [O III] and CO quantities published in the literature. The Seyfert galaxy NGC 2639 was known to exhibit three episodes of AGN jet/lobe activity. We present here the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) 735 MHz image of NGC 2639 showing a fourth episode as witnessed by the discovery of $\sim9$ kpc radio lobes misaligned with the previously known $\sim1.5$ kpc, $\sim360$ parsec, and $\sim3$ parsec jet features detected through the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), respectively. Using the spectral ageing software BRATS, we derive the ages of the $\sim9$ kpc, $\sim1.5$ kpc, and $\sim360$ parsec episodes to be, respectively, $34^{+4}_{-6}$ Myr, $11.8^{+1.7}_{-1.4}$ Myr, and $2.8^{+0.7}_{-0.5}$ Myr, and conclude that minor mergers occurred $9-22$ Myr apart. NGC 2639 shows a deficit of molecular gas in its central $\sim6$ kpc region. The GALEX NUV image also shows a deficiency of recent star-formation in the same region, while the star formation rate (SFR) surface density in NGC 2639 is lower by a factor of $5-18$ compared to the global Schmidt law of star-forming galaxies. This makes NGC 2639 a rare case of a Seyfert galaxy showing episodic jet activity and possible signatures of jet-driven AGN feedback., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication to MNRAS

We present polarization images of 9 radio-loud (RL) quasars from the VLA B-array at 6 GHz. These quasars belong to the Palomar-Green (PG) "blazar" sample comprising 16 RL quasars and 8 BL Lac objects. Extensive polarization is detected in the cores, jets and lobes of all the quasars, with cores primarily displaying magnetic (B-) fields transverse to, and jets displaying fields aligned with the jet direction. Hotspots display either transverse B-fields signifying B- field compression at terminal shocks or more complex structures. The fractional polarization in the cores ranges from 1-10% and jets/lobes from 10-40%. Several of the quasars show distorted or hybrid FRI/FRII radio morphologies with indications of restarted AGN activity. We attribute this to the optical/UV selection criteria of the PG sample that remains unbiased at radio frequencies. The in-band spectral indices of the radio cores are relatively flat while they are steep in the hotspots. This is consistent with the polarization structures where the hotspots appear to be locations of jet bends or bow-shocks. We present global properties for the entire PG "blazar" sample. We find that jet powers correlate with accretion rates for the quasars; higher accretion rates result in more powerful radio jets. A correlation between the radio core fractional polarization and the 150 MHz total radio luminosity for the 9 quasars studied here may imply that more organized B-fields at the jet bases lead to higher core fractional polarization and to more powerful radio jets., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures, MNRAS accepted

We report our measurements of the absolute transition frequencies of 5P_3/2,F = 3 to nS and nD Rydberg states of 87Rb with high principal quantum numbers in a wide range of values (n = 45-124). The measurements were performed using Rydberg Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) in ladder-type three-level systems. We measure the transition frequencies with an accuracy of less than 2 MHz. We determine the values of the Rydberg-Ritz parameter for 87Rb from our experimental measurements of the transition frequencies. Our measurements of the absolute transition frequencies of the highly excited Rydberg states would be useful for diverse applications in quantum information processing, quantum simulation and quantum sensing with Rydberg atoms.

The dominant radio emission mechanism in radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) is an open question. Primary contenders include: low-power radio jets, winds, star-formation and coronal emission. Our work suggests that radio polarization and emission-line studies can help to distinguish between these scenarios and determine the primary contributor. Our multi-frequency, multi-scale radio polarization study has revealed a composite jet and "wind" radio outflow in the radio-intermediate quasar, III Zw 2, as well as in the BALQSO, Mrk 231. Our radio polarization study in conjunction with the [O III] emission-line study of five type 2 RQQs have provided insights on the interplay of jets/winds and emission-line gas. These sources reveal an anti-correlation between polarized radio emission and [O III] emission. This is similar to that observed in some radio-loud AGN in the literature and suggests that the radio emission could be depolarized by the emission-line gas. We present a study of a luminous, z=0.15, type-2 quasar (log [L([OIII])/(erg/s)]=42.8) from the Quasar Feedback Survey. It is classified as 'radio-quiet' (log [L(1.4 GHz)/(W/Hz)]=23.8); however, radio imaging reveals ~1 kpc low-power jets (log [Pjet/(erg/s)]=44) inclined into the plane of the galaxy disk. We combine MUSE and ALMA observations to map stellar kinematics and ionised and molecular gas properties. The jets are seen to drive galaxy-wide bi-conical turbulent outflows, reaching W80 = 1000-1300 km/s, in the ionised phase (traced via optical emission-lines), which also have increased electron densities compared to the quiescent gas. The turbulent gas is driven perpendicular to the jet axis and is escaping along the galaxy minor axis, reaching 7.5 kpc on both sides. Traced via CO(3-2) emission, the turbulent material in molecular gas phase is one-third as spatially extended and has 3 times lower velocity-dispersion as compared to ionised gas. The jets are seen to be strongly interacting with the interstellar medium (ISM) through enhanced ionised emission and disturbed/depleted molecular gas at the jet termini. We see further evidence for jet-induced feedback through significantly higher stellar velocity-dispersion aligned, and co-spatial with, the jet axis (<5 deg). We discuss possible negative and positive feedback scenarios arising due to the interaction of the low-power jets with the ISM in the context of recent jet-ISM interaction simulations, which qualitatively agree with our observations. We present results from our radio polarimetric study with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) at Band 4 (550-850 MHz) of 3 blazars: radio-loud quasars 3C390.3, 4C71.07 and BL Lac object 1ES 2344+514. The aim of this study was (i) to carry out a feasibility study for Band 4 polarization with the uGMRT, and (ii) to compare and contrast the kpc-scale polarization properties between the blazar sub-classes. We have detected linear polarization in all the three sources. The degree of linear polarization in the cores of the two quasars is higher than in the BL Lac object, consistent with similar differences observed on parsec-scales in blazars. The highest fractional polarization of 15% is observed in the hotspot region of 3C390.3, which also shows extended polarized lobe structures. 1ES 2344+514 shows a core-halo structure whereas 4C71.07 remains unresolved. A rotation of polarization electric vectors along the northern hotspot of 3C390.3, and the core of 1ES 2344+514, suggest jet bending. Greater depolarization in the southern lobe of 3C390.3 compared to the northern lobe indicates the presence of the `Laing-Garrington effect'. We present the results of a multi-frequency, multi-scale radio polarimetric study with the Very Large Array (VLA) of the Seyfert 1 galaxy and BALQSO, Mrk 231. We detect complex total and polarized intensity features in the source. Overall, the images indicate the presence of a broad, one-sided, curved outflow towards the south which consists of a weakly collimated jet with poloidal inferred magnetic fields, inside a broader magnetized ``wind'' or ``sheath'' component with toroidal inferred magnetic fields. The model of a kpc-scale weakly collimated jet/lobe in Mrk 231 is strengthened by its C-shaped morphology, steep spectral index throughout, complexities in the magnetic field structures, and the presence of self-similar structures observed on the 10-parsec-scale in the literature. The ``wind'' may comprise both nuclear starburst (close to the core) and AGN winds, where the latter maybe the primary contributor. Moving away from the core, the ``wind'' component may also comprise the outer layers (or ``sheath'') of a broadened jet. The inferred value of the (weakly collimated) jet production efficiency, $\eta_\mathrm{jet}\sim$0.01 is consistent with the estimates in the literature. The composite jet and wind outflow in Mrk 231 appears to be low-power and matter-dominated, and oriented at a small angle to our line of sight., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures; v2: matches published version

We present results from a polarization study of the radio-intermediate quasar, III Zw 2, at a redshift of 0.089, with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) at 685 MHz and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 5 and 34 GHz. We detect a kpc-scale outflow, exhibiting transverse magnetic (B-) fields. The curved jet terminates in a bow-shock-like radio structure with inferred B-fields aligned with the lobe edges. We suggest that the radio outflow in III Zw 2 is a combination of a collimated jet along with a wind-like component. This "wind" component could be a magnetized accretion disk wind or the outer layers of a broadened jet or a combination of both. The current data cannot differentiate between these possibilities. We also detect kpc-scale lobe emission that is misaligned with the primary lobes in the uGMRT images. The spectral indices and the electron lifetimes in the misaligned lobe are similar to the primary lobe, suggesting that the misaligned lobe is not a relic. We propose that changing spectral states of the accretion disk, and the subsequent intermittent behaviour of the outflow, along with the close interplay between the jet and "wind" could explain the radio-intermediate nature of III Zw 2. Our study shows that radio-intermediate quasars are promising sources for understanding the role of jets and winds in galaxy evolution and demonstrates the power of radio polarization studies towards achieving this., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures; v2: matches published version

We present the first results from the Quasar Feedback Survey, a sample of 42 z<0.2, [O III] luminous AGN (L[O III]>10^42.1 ergs/s) with moderate radio luminosities (i.e. L(1.4GHz)>10^23.4 W/Hz; median L(1.4GHz)=5.9x10^23 W/Hz). Using high spatial resolution (~0.3-1 arcsec), 1.5-6 GHz radio images from the Very Large Array, we find that 67 percent of the sample have spatially extended radio features, on ~1-60 kpc scales. The radio sizes and morphologies suggest that these may be lower radio luminosity versions of compact, radio-loud AGN. By combining the radio-to-infrared excess parameter, spectral index, radio morphology and brightness temperature, we find radio emission in at least 57 percent of the sample that is associated with AGN-related processes (e.g. jets, quasar-driven winds or coronal emission). This is despite only 9.5-21 percent being classified as radio-loud using traditional criteria. The origin of the radio emission in the remainder of the sample is unclear. We find that both the established anti-correlation between radio size and the width of the [O III] line, and the known trend for the most [O III] luminous AGN to be associated with spatially-extended radio emission, also hold for our sample of moderate radio luminosity quasars. These observations add to the growing evidence of a connection between the radio emission and ionised gas in quasar host galaxies. We present the results from 685 MHz observations with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) of 22 quasars belonging to the Palomar-Green (PG) quasar sample. Only four sources reveal extended radio structures on $\sim$10-30 kpc scales, while the rest are largely a combination of a radio core unresolved at the uGMRT resolution of $\sim$3-5 arcsec, surrounded by diffuse emission on few kpc to $\sim$10 kpc scales. A few sources reveal signatures of barely resolved jets and lobes in their spectral index images that are created using the uGMRT 685 MHz data and similar resolution GHz-frequency data from the Very Large Array. On the basis of their position on the radio-IR correlation as well as the spectral index images, we find that the radio emission in the two radio-loud (RL) quasars and nearly one-third of the radio-quiet (RQ) quasars is active galactic nucleus (AGN) dominated whereas the remaining sources appear to have significant contributions from stellar-related processes along with the AGN. While the two RL sources exhibit inverted spectral index in their cores, the RQ sources exhibit a range of spectral indices varying from flat to steep ($-0.1\gtrsim\alpha_{R}\gtrsim-1.1$) indicating the presence of unresolved jets/lobes or winds. Except for a significant correlation between the 685~MHz radio luminosity and the Eddington ratio, we do not find strong correlations between other 685 MHz radio properties and black hole (BH) properties in the RQ PG sources. This lack of correlations could be explained by the contribution of stellar-related emission, or radio emission from previous AGN activity episodes which may not be related to the current BH activity state., Comment: 25 pages, 20 figures; v2: matches published version
