1. Interrogating Kinesiology from Above and Below: Højskole Pedagogy, Praxis and Bodily Democracy

Abstract: This paper, based on the Praxis Lecture I delivered at the National Association of Kinesiology in Higher Education Conference in January 2024, articulates how my experiences at a Danish gymnastic folkehøjskole (folk high school) and højskole pedagogy inform my teaching and service. After defining højskole pedagogy, I discuss how I incorporate its elements to promote greater inclusion, equity, and diversity in kinesiology, particularly around (dis)ability and body size. Højskole pedagogy also provides a way to encourage students to embody their learning and learn about their bodies through course content and experiential lessons. I dedicate this article to Dr. Seymour (Sy) Kleinman, my advisor and mentor, who tirelessly championed human movement as the foundation of kinesiology. He emphasized the importance of teaching, exploring, performing, and experiencing human movement, particularly in the context of increasing efforts to by those within and outside kinesiology to scientize and subdivide the field.

2. Estimating emissions of methane consistent with atmospheric measurements of methane and δ13C of methane

Abstract: We have constructed an atmospheric inversion framework based on TM5-4DVAR to jointly assimilate measurements of methane and δ13C of methane in order to estimate source-specific methane emissions. Here we present global emission estimates from this framework for the period 1999–2016. We assimilate a newly constructed, multi-agency database of CH4 and δ13C measurements. We find that traditional CH4-only atmospheric inversions are unlikely to estimate emissions consistent with atmospheric δ13C data, and assimilating δ13C data is necessary to derive emissions consistent with both measurements. Our framework attributes ca. 85 % of the post-2007 growth in atmospheric methane to microbial sources, with about half of that coming from the tropics between 23.5∘ N and 23.5∘ S. This contradicts the attribution of the recent growth in the methane budget of the Global Carbon Project (GCP). We find that the GCP attribution is only consistent with our top-down estimate in the absence of δ13C data. We find that at global and continental scales, δ13C data can separate microbial from fossil methane emissions much better than CH4 data alone, and at smaller scales this ability is limited by the current δ13C measurement coverage. Finally, we find that the largest uncertainty in using δ13C data to separate different methane source types comes from our knowledge of atmospheric chemistry, specifically the distribution of tropospheric chlorine and the isotopic discrimination of the methane sink.

Abstract: BackgroundImmune response indicators in the early phase of COVID-19, including interferon and neutralizing responses against SARS-CoV-2, which predict hypoxemia remains unclear.MethodsThis prospective observational study recruited patients hospitalized with COVID-19 (before emergence of omicron variant). As the immune indicators, we assessed the serum levels of IFN-I/III, IL-6, CXCL10 and VEGF, using an ELISA at within 5 days after the onset of symptoms, and serum neutralizing responses using a pseudovirus assay. We also assessed SARS-CoV-2 viral load by qPCR using nasal-swab specimens and serum, to assess the association of indicators and viral distribution.ResultsThe study enrolled 117 patients with COVID-19, of which 28 patients developed hypoxemia. None received vaccine before admission. Serum IFN-I levels (IFN-α and IFN-β), IL-6, CXCL10, LDH and CRP were significantly higher in patients who developed hypoxemia. A significant association with nasopharyngeal viral load was observed only for IFN-I. The serum levels of IFN-α, IL-6, CXCL10 were significantly associated with the presence of RNAemia. 4. Estimated regional CO2 flux and uncertainty based on an ensemble of atmospheric CO2 inversions

Abstract: Global and regional sources and sinks of carbon across the earth's surface have been studied extensively using atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) observations and atmospheric chemistry-transport model (ACTM) simulations (top-down/inversion method). However, the uncertainties in the regional flux distributions remain unconstrained due to the lack of high-quality measurements, uncertainties in model simulations, and representation of data and flux errors in the inversion systems. Here, we assess the representation of data and flux errors using a suite of 16 inversion cases derived from a single transport model (MIROC4-ACTM) but different sets of a priori (bottom-up) terrestrial biosphere and oceanic fluxes, as well as prior flux and observational data uncertainties (50 sites) to estimate CO2 fluxes for 84 regions over the period 2000–2020. The inversion ensembles provide a mean flux field that is consistent with the global CO2 growth rate, land and ocean sink partitioning of −2.9 ± 0.3 (± 1σ uncertainty on the ensemble mean) and −1.6 ± 0.2 PgC yr−1, respectively, for the period 2011–2020 (without riverine export correction), offsetting about 22 %–33 % and 16 %–18 % of global fossil fuel CO2 emissions. The rivers carry about 0.6 PgC yr−1 of land sink into the deep ocean, and thus the effective land and ocean partitioning is −2.3 ± 0.3 and −2.2 ± 0.3, respectively. Aggregated fluxes for 15 land regions compare reasonably well with the best estimations for the 2000s (∼ 2000–2009), given by the REgional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes (RECCAP), and all regions appeared as a carbon sink over 2011–2020. Interannual variability and seasonal cycle in CO2 fluxes are more consistently derived for two distinct prior fluxes when a greater degree of freedom (increased prior flux uncertainty) is given to the inversion system. We have further evaluated the inversion fluxes using meridional CO2 distributions from independent (not used in the inversions) aircraft and surface measurements, suggesting that the ensemble mean flux (model–observation mean ± 1σ standard deviation = −0.3 ± 3 ppm) is best suited for global and regional CO2 flux budgets than an individual inversion (model–observation 1σ standard deviation = −0.35 ± 3.3 ppm). Using the ensemble mean fluxes and uncertainties for 15 land and 11 ocean regions at 5-year intervals, we show promise in the capability to track flux changes toward supporting the ongoing and future CO2 emission mitigation policies.

5. Fractionation of O2∕N2 and Ar∕N2 in the Antarctic ice sheet during bubble formation and bubble–clathrate hydrate transition from precise gas measurements of the Dome Fuji ice core

Abstract: The variations of δO2/N2 and δAr/N2 in the Dome Fuji ice core were measured from 112 m (bubbly ice) to 2001 m (clathrate hydrate ice). Our method, combined with the low storage temperature of the samples (−50 ∘C), successfully excludes post-coring gas-loss fractionation signals from our data. From the bubbly ice to the middle of the bubble–clathrate transition zone (BCTZ) (112–800 m) and below the BCTZ (>1200 m), the δO2/N2 and δAr/N2 data exhibit orbital-scale variations similar to local summer insolation. The data in the lower BCTZ (800–1200 m) have large scatter, which may be caused by millimeter-scale inhomogeneity of air composition combined with finite sample lengths. The insolation signal originally recorded at the bubble close-off remains through the BCTZ, and the insolation signal may be reconstructed by analyzing long ice samples (more than 50 cm for the Dome Fuji core). In the clathrate hydrate zone, the scatter around the orbital-scale variability decreases with depth, indicating diffusive smoothing of δO2/N2 and δAr/N2. A simple gas diffusion model was used to reproduce the smoothing and thus constrain their permeation coefficients. The relationship between δAr/N2 and δO2/N2 is markedly different for the datasets representing bubble close-off (slope ∼ 0.5), bubble–clathrate hydrate transformation (∼1), and post-coring gas loss (∼0.2), suggesting that the contributions of the mass-independent and mass-dependent fractionation processes are different for those cases. The method and data presented here may be useful for improving the orbital dating of deep ice cores over the multiple glacial cycles and further studying non-insolation-driven signals (e.g., atmospheric composition) of these gases.

6. Intercomparison of O2 ∕ N2 ratio scales among AIST, NIES, TU, and SIO based on a round-robin exercise using gravimetric standard mixtures

Abstract: A study was conducted to compare the δ(O2/N2) scales used by four laboratories engaged in atmospheric δ(O2/N2) measurements. These laboratories are the Research Institute for Environmental Management Technology, Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (EMRI/AIST); the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES); Tohoku University (TU); and Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). Therefore, five high-precision standard mixtures for the O2 molar fraction gravimetrically prepared by the National Metrology Institute of Japan, AIST (NMIJ/AIST) with a standard uncertainty of less than 5 per meg (0.001 ‰) were used as round-robin standard mixtures. EMRI/AIST, NIES, TU, and SIO reported the analyzed values of the standard mixtures on their own δ(O2/N2) scales, and the values were compared with the δ(O2/N2) values gravimetrically determined by NMIJ/AIST (the NMIJ/AIST scale). The δ(O2/N2) temporal drift in the five standard mixtures during the intercomparison experiment from May 2017 to March 2020 was corrected based on the δ(O2/N2) values analyzed before and after the laboratory measurements by EMRI/AIST. The scales are compared based on offsets in zero and span. The relative span offsets of EMRI/AIST, TU, NIES, and SIO scales against the NMIJ/AIST scale were -0.11%±0.10%, -0.10%±0.13%, 3.39 %±0.13 %, and 0.93 %±0.10 %, respectively. The largest offset corresponded to a 0.30 Pg yr−1 decrease and increase in global estimates for land biospheric and oceanic CO2 uptakes based on trends in atmospheric CO2 and δ(O2/N2). The deviations in the measured δ(O2/N2) values on the laboratory scales from the NMIJ/AIST scale are 65.8±2.2, 425.7±3.1, 404.5±3.0, and 596.4±2.4 per meg for EMRI/AIST, TU, NIES, and SIO, respectively. The difference between atmospheric δ(O2/N2) values observed at Hateruma Island (HAT; 24.05∘ N, 123.81∘ E), Japan, by EMRI/AIST and NIES were reduced from -329.3±6.9 to -6.6±6.8 per meg by converting their scales to the NMIJ/AIST scale.

7. Seasonal characteristics of trace gas transport into the extratropical upper troposphere and lower stratosphere

Abstract: To investigate the seasonal characteristics of trace gas distributions in the extratropical upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (ExUTLS) as well as stratosphere–troposphere exchange processes, origin fractions of air masses originating in the stratosphere, tropical troposphere, midlatitude lower troposphere (LT), and high-latitude LT in the ExUTLS are estimated using 10-year backward trajectories calculated with European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA-Interim data as the meteorological input. Time series of trace gases obtained from ground-based and airborne observations are incorporated into the trajectories, thus reconstructing spatiotemporal distributions of trace gases in the ExUTLS. The reconstructed tracer distributions are analyzed with the origin fractions and the stratospheric age of air (AoA) estimated using the backward trajectories. The reconstructed distributions of SF6 and CO2 in the ExUTLS are linearly correlated with those of AoA because of their chemically passive behavior and quasi-stable increasing trends in the troposphere. Distributions of CH4, N2O, and CO are controlled primarily by chemical decay along the transport path from the source region via the stratosphere and subsequent mixing of such stratospheric air masses with tropospheric air masses in the ExUTLS.

8. Three-dimensional simulation of stratospheric gravitational separation using the NIES global atmospheric tracer transport model

Abstract: A three-dimensional simulation of gravitational separation, defined as the process of atmospheric molecule separation under gravity according to their molar masses, is performed for the first time in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. We analyze distributions of two isotopes with a small difference in molecular mass (13C16O2 (Mi=45) and 12C16O2 (Mi=44)) simulated by the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) chemical transport model (TM) with a parameterization of molecular diffusion. The NIES model employs global reanalysis and an isentropic vertical coordinate and uses optimized CO2 fluxes. The applicability of the NIES TM to the modeling of gravitational separation is demonstrated by a comparison with measurements recorded by high-precision cryogenic balloon-borne samplers in the lower stratosphere. We investigate the processes affecting the seasonality of gravitational separation and examine the age of air derived from the tracer distributions modeled by the NIES TM. We find a strong relationship between age of air and gravitational separation for the main climatic zones. The advantages and limitations of using age of air and gravitational separation as indicators of the variability in the stratosphere circulation are discussed.

Abstract: We report results from a worldwide interlaboratory comparison of samples among laboratories that measure (or measured) stable carbon and hydrogen isotope ratios of atmospheric CH4 (δ13C-CH4 and δD-CH4). The offsets among the laboratories are larger than the measurement reproducibility of individual laboratories. To disentangle plausible measurement offsets, we evaluated and critically assessed a large number of intercomparison results, some of which have been documented previously in the literature. The results indicate significant offsets of δ13C-CH4 and δD-CH4 measurements among data sets reported from different laboratories; the differences among laboratories at modern atmospheric CH4 level spread over ranges of 0.5 ‰ for δ13C-CH4 and 13 ‰ for δD-CH4. The intercomparison results summarized in this study may be of help in future attempts to harmonize δ13C-CH4 and δD-CH4 data sets from different laboratories in order to jointly incorporate them into modelling studies. However, establishing a merged data set, which includes δ13C-CH4 and δD-CH4 data from multiple laboratories with desirable compatibility, is still challenging due to differences among laboratories in instrument settings, correction methods, traceability to reference materials and long-term data management. Further efforts are needed to identify causes of the interlaboratory measurement offsets and to decrease those to move towards the best use of available δ13C-CH4 and δD-CH4 data sets.

11. Age and gravitational separation of the stratospheric air over Indonesia

Abstract: The gravitational separation of major atmospheric components, in addition to the age of air, would provide additional useful information about stratospheric circulation. However, observations of the age of air and gravitational separation are still geographically sparse, especially in the tropics. In order to address this issue, air samples were collected over Biak, Indonesia in February 2015 using four large plastic balloons, each loaded with two compact cryogenic samplers. With a vertical resolution of better than 2 km, air samples from seven different altitudes were analyzed for CO2 and SF6 mole fractions, δ15N of N2, δ18O of O2, and δ(Ar∕N2) to examine the vertically dependent age and gravitational separation of air in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) and the equatorial stratosphere. By comparing their measured mole fractions with aircraft observations in the upper tropical troposphere, we have found that CO2 and SF6 ages increase gradually with increasing altitude from the TTL to 22 km, and then rapidly from there up to 29 km. The CO2 and SF6 ages agree well with each other in the TTL and in the lower stratosphere, but show a significant difference above 24 km. The average values of δ15N of N2, δ18O of O2, and δ(Ar∕N2) all show a small but distinct upward decrease due to the gravitational separation effect. Simulations with a two-dimensional atmospheric transport model indicate that the gravitational separation effect decreases as tropical upwelling is enhanced. From the model calculations with enhanced eddy mixing, it is also found that the upward increase in air age is magnified by horizontal mixing. These model simulations also show that the gravitational separation effect remains relatively constant in the lower stratosphere. The results of this study strongly suggest that the gravitational separation, combined with the age of air, can be used to diagnose air transport processes in the stratosphere.

13. Vertical distributions of N2O isotopocules in the equatorial stratosphere

Abstract: Vertical profiles of nitrous oxide (N2O) and its isotopocules, isotopically substituted molecules, were obtained over the Equator at altitudes of 16–30 km. Whole air samples were collected using newly developed balloon-borne compact cryogenic samplers over the eastern equatorial Pacific in 2012 and Biak Island, Indonesia, in 2015. They were examined in the laboratory using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The mixing ratio and isotopocule ratios of N2O in the equatorial stratosphere showed a weaker vertical gradient than the previously reported profiles in the subtropical and mid-latitude and high-latitude stratosphere. From the relation between the mixing ratio and isotopocule ratios, further distinct characteristics were found over the Equator: (1) observed isotopocule fractionations (ε values) in the middle stratosphere (25–30 km or [N2O] −1) are almost equal to ε values reported from broadband photolysis experiments conducted in the laboratory; (2) ε values in the lower stratosphere (2O] > ca. 260 nmol mol−1) are about half of the experimentally obtained values, being slightly larger than those observed in the mid-latitude and high-latitude lower stratosphere ([N2O] > ca. 170 nmol mol−1). These results from the deep tropics suggest the following. (i) The timescale for quasi-horizontal mixing between tropical and mid-latitude air in the tropical middle stratosphere is sufficiently slow relative to the tropical upwelling rate that isotope fractionation approaches the Rayleigh limit for N2O photolysis. (ii) The air in the tropical lower stratosphere is exchanged with extratropical air on a timescale that is shorter than that of photochemical decomposition of N2O. Previously observed ε values, which are invariably smaller than those of photolysis, can be explained qualitatively using a three-dimensional chemical transport model and using a simple model that assumes mixing of aged tropical air and extratropical air during residual circulation. Results show that isotopocule ratios are useful to examine the stratospheric transport scheme deduced from tracer–tracer relations.

Abstract: The structure of excited states in the neutron-rich nucleus 31Mg, which is in the region of the “island of inversion” associated with the neutron magic number N=20, is studied by β–γ spectroscopy of spin-polarized 31Na. Among the 31Mg levels below the one neutron separation energy of 2.3 MeV, the spin values of all five positive-parity levels are unambiguously determined by observing the anisotropic β decay. Two rotational bands with Kπ=1/2+ and 1/2− are proposed based on the spins and energies of the levels. Comparison on a level-by-level basis is performed between the experimental results and theoretical calculations by the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) plus generator coordinate method (GCM). It is found that various nuclear structures coexist in the low excitation energy region in 31Mg.

Abstract: In Japan, the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) was introduced to the nation's routine immunization program in April 2013 and was replaced by the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) in November 2013. Distribution of serotypes and macrolide resistance genotypes was investigated for a total of 1097 (975 children, 122 adults) and 960 (873 children, 87 adults) clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae from noninvasive infections in Hokkaido (northern main island of Japan) in the routine immunization periods for PCV7 and PCV13 (April–October 2013 and November 2013–November 2014, respectively). Serotype was determined by sequential multiplex PCR and additional genetic analyses. Macrolide resistance genes erm(B) and mef(A/E) were detected by multiplex PCR. Although the most prevalent serotypes in children were 23A and 6C in the PCV7 period, after replacement with PCV13, 19A became the most common, followed by 6C, 15A and 23A. Among adults, serotype 3 was consistently the most frequent throughout the study periods. Abstract: Background In clinical practice, we often encounter the patients with sarcoidosis showing relatively high in the normal range of serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) value. Purpose We aimed to examine the serum ACE value of the patients with sarcoidosis and determine the new cut-off value for detecting the patients with sarcoidosis. Methods and results We retrospectively examined all 3781 subjects (51.1% men, 60.1±17.0 y.o.) in whom ACE was measured for any reasons including suspected sarcoidosis between 2009 and 2020 in our hospital. Of 293 patients with sarcoidosis, 101, 212, 84, and 88 were diagnosed as sarcoidosis in heart, lung, skin, and eyes, respectively. After excluding 477 patients taking ACE inhibitor and/or immunosuppression agent or those with any diseases affecting serum ACE levels, we analyzed 3304 subjects including 215 with sarcoidosis. Serum ACEs were 19.6 IU/L [IQR, 15.1–31.5] in the subjects with sarcoidosis and 10.7 [8.4–16.5] in those without (P Conclusion(s) In the current cut-off value of serum ACE, sensitivity for detecting sarcoidosis was comparatively low, though positive predictive value was low when the new-cut-off value was used in our study. Abstract: As a basic understanding of the dynamics of the atmospheric circulation, it has been believed that gravitational separation of atmospheric components is observable only in the atmosphere above the turbopause. However, we found, from our high-precision measurements of not only the isotopic ratios of N2, O2 and Ar but also the mole fraction of Ar, that gravitational separation occurs even in the stratosphere below the turbopause; their observed vertical profiles are in good agreement with those expected theoretically from molecular mass differences. The O2/N2 ratio observed in the middle stratosphere, corrected for gravitational separation, showed the same mean air age as estimated from the CO2 mole fraction. Simulations with a 2-dimensional model of the middle atmosphere indicated that a relationship between gravitational separation and the age of air in the stratosphere would be significantly affected if the Brewer–Dobson circulation was enhanced due to global warming. Therefore, gravitational separation is usable as a new indicator of changes in the atmospheric circulation in the stratosphere.

Abstract: This double-blind randomized clinical trial (RCT) aimed to evaluate the 2-year survival rates of endocrowns and partial coverage ceramic restorations (PCCR) with fiber posts.Forty (40) participants fulfilled the elegibility criteria, and they were randomly allocated in 2 groups: Endocrown or PCCR+post. The survival rates were assessed based on USPHS modified and radiographic examinations. A Chi-square test was used to assess the distribution of characteristics between groups. Kaplan-Meier and Log-rank tests were used to estimate the survival rate. To evaluate the association between survival of the restorations and the explanatory variables, the Multivariate Cox regression model was used. Only variables presenting p⟨0.20 were maintained in final model (α= 0.05).The highest 2-year survival rates were recorded for the Endocrown group (100%), whereas the PCCR+post group exhibited the lowest performance (66.7%). Most of the restoration failures was due to lack of marginal adaption, fracture, and recurrent caries. Cox Regression unadjusted analysis showed that only type of restoration presented a significant effect (p⟨0.20). Thus, adjusted analysis was not performed.Endocrowns appear to be a promising conservative restorative option and to be feasible and reliable approach restoring endodontically.

Abstract: BackgroundThe pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) is multifactorial and involves diverse cytokines, autoantibodies and immune complexes inducing blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction, neuroendocrine-immune imbalance, vascular occlusion, tissue, and neuronal damage. Several pro-inflammatory cytokines have been implicated in the pathogenesis of NPSLE [1]. Previously we have shown that the titer of anti-suprabasin (SBSN) antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of NPSLE patients was significantly higher than in SLE, MS and NPH groups [2]. However, distinguishing NPSLE from other neuropsychiatric conditions with different etiologies is challenging.ObjectivesThis study determined the most critical serum biomarkers for the development of NPSLE as they may have clinical utility prior to the onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 35 NPSLE patients, 34 SLE patients, 20 viral meningitis (VM) patients, and 16 relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. We measured anti-SBSN antibodies concentrations in serum by using Luciferase immunoprecipitation system (LIPS) assay. The serum concentrations of cytokines/chemokines were measured by using multiplex bead-based assay. Abstract: BackgroundAlthough serum IgG4 levels are important for the diagnosis of IgG4-related diseases (IgG4-RD), few studies have validated IgG4 levels in healthy individuals in large resident medical examination cohorts and investigated background factors associated with serum IgG4.A report on genetic factors shows that HLA loci associate with IgG4-RD found in Japanese nation-wide IgG4-RD registry1). However, environmental and genetic factors related to the elevated serum IgG4 levels, which may closely associate with development of IgG4-RD, have previously been unclear in healthy subjects. The nephelometric immunoassay (NIA) is conventionally used to measure IgG4, but it requires a relatively large amount of serum. The magnetic bead panel assay (MBA), which can evaluate IgG4 levels with only a few ml of serum, has an advantage compared with NIA regarding to required sample volume, but the correlation between the two methods is unclear.ObjectivesFirst, we attempted to verify the accuracy of the MBA compared to the standard NIA in the first cohort. Next, we examined the relationship between IgG4 measured by the MBA and background information of healthy subjects to identify variables that correlate with serum IgG4 in the second cohort.MethodsFirst, Kanazawa University collected 947 samples from the resident health examination, and IgG4 levels were measured by both MBA and NIA, and the correlation between the two was verified using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (first cohort). Next (second cohort), serum IgG4 of 3240 samples of Nagasaki Island Study (NaIS), which had started in 2014 collaborating among Nagasaki University and Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture, intended for research of varying conditions and diseases including IgG4-RD, were then measured by MBA. These subjects were stratified into the two groups as IgG4-high and IgG4-within normal limit using the aforementioned cutoff values, and compared with background information such as age, gender, drinking, smoking, uric acid, serum creatinine, comorbidities and HLA typing, including DRB1*04:06, *04:03, *04:05, *04:10 as disease-susceptibility gene, DRB1*09:01 and DQB1*03:03 as protective gene1).ResultsIgG4 by MBA correlated well with IgG4 by NIA (r=0.94, p-valueConclusionWe concluded that MBA is a good method to measure serum IgG4 even by the very small sample volume. In our study, the prevalence of serum IgG4 positivity was high tendency than previous report2). Our data showed that male and smoking are independent factors associated with high serum IgG4 positivity. There were no association between serum IgG4 level and HLA genotyping in healthy subjects. Abstract: BackgroundThe administration of Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors as well as biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs has dramatically improved even the clinical outcomes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with inadequate response to methotrexate (MTX). The dysregulation of JAK- signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathways via overproduction of cytokines, such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) is involved in the pathogenesis of RA (1). Filgotinib, a preferential JAK1 inhibitor, is effective in suppressing disease activity and preventing the progression of joint destruction due to inhibition of the JAK-STAT pathway. IL-6 inhibitors such as tocilizumab also inhibit the JAK-STAT pathways due to inhibition of IL-6 signaling. Thus, it should be desirable to investigate whether the effectiveness of filgotinib monotherapy is non-inferior to those of tocilizumab monotherapy in RA patients with inadequate response to MTX. In addition, it is important to accurately evaluate disease activity at the joint level by using musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) and clinical disease activity indices, including subjective parameters (2).ObjectivesThis study’s principal objective is to evaluate the effects of filgotinib monotherapy is non-inferior to those of tocilizumab monotherapy in RA patients with inadequate response to MTX. In addition, we will evaluate changes in patients’ parameters, including clinical disease activity indices, MSUS scores, serum biomarkers, patient-reported outcome (PRO), and modified total Sharp score (mTSS) after the administration of filgotinib or tocilizumab. Herein, we describe the study protocol for this study.MethodsThis study is an interventional, multicenter, randomized, open-label, parallel-group and non-inferiority clinical trial with a 52-week follow-up. In total, 400 RA patients with at least moderate disease activity during treatment with MTX will be included. Patients will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to administration of filgotinib 200mg/day monotherapy or subcutaneous tocilizumab 162mg/biweekly monotherapy switched from MTX (Figure 1). We will evaluate disease activity by measuring clinical disease activity indices and by using MSUS. The primary endpoint is the proportion of patients who achieve an American College of Rheumatology 50 response at week 12. Important secondary endpoints are the changes from the baseline of the MSUS scores, PRO, and mTSS. We will also comprehensively analyze the serum levels of multiple biomarkers such as cytokines and chemokines.Figure 1.ResultsAlthough the study results cannot be shown because the research entry is in progress, they are expected to show the non-inferiority of filgotinib monotherapy to tocilizumab monotherapy in RA patients with inadequate response to MTX.ConclusionThe strength of this study is its prospective evaluation of therapeutic efficacy using not only clinical disease activity indices but also MSUS, which accurately and objectively evaluate disease activity at the joint level among patients drawn from multiple centers with a standardized evaluation by MSUS. The neutron-rich Sb isotopes were produced by the in-flight fragmentation of a U238 primary beam with an energy of 345 MeV/nucleon. Several new excited states of Te137 with tentatively assigned spin-parities of (5/2-), (9/2-), and (7/2) have been established which play an important role in the evolution of neutron levels beyond N=82. The study of the ß decay of Sb138 led to a considerable extension of the level scheme of Te138 including the identification of several nonyrast states. Abstract: Structure of the neutron-rich nucleus $^{30}\mathrm{Mg}$, which is located close to the region of the $N=20$ ``island of inversion,'' has been investigated by $\ensuremath{\beta}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ spectroscopy of spin-polarized $^{30}\mathrm{Na}$. From the detailed $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coincidence relations, nine new states have been established in $^{30}\mathrm{Mg}$. The spin-polarization of $^{30}\mathrm{Na}$ enabled firm spin-parity assignments for seven states in $^{30}\mathrm{Mg}$ by means of the spatial asymmetry of $\ensuremath{\beta}$-ray counts in coincidence with the $^{30}\mathrm{Mg}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays. Based on the experimental information, it is shown that various characteristic structures coexist in $^{30}\mathrm{Mg}$: (i) the ground-state vibrational-like band, (ii) the deformed band built on the ${0}_{2}^{+}$ state at 1.788 MeV, (iii) the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-vibrational band built on the ${2}_{3}^{+}$ state at 3.543 MeV, and (iv) four states around 5 MeV associated with large $\ensuremath{\beta}$-transition probabilities: ${1}^{+}$ and ${2}^{+}$ states with spherical nature, ${1}^{+}$ and ${2}^{+}$ states with collective nature. The experimental results are compared with three theoretical calculations of the CHFB $+$ LQRPA, the AMD $+$ GCM, and the large-scale shell model with the EEdf1 interaction. All these theories reasonably reproduce the three bands.

Abstract: The $\beta$-decay half-lives of 55 neutron-rich nuclei $^{134-139}$Sn, $^{134-142}$Sb, $^{137-144}$Te, $^{140-146}$I, $^{142-148}$Xe, $^{145-151}$Cs, $^{148-153}$Ba, $^{151-155}$La were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) employing the projectile fission fragments of $^{238}$U. The nuclear level structure, which relates to deformation, has a large effect on the half-lives. The impact of newly-measured half-lives on modeling the astrophysical origin of the heavy elements is studied in the context of $r$ process nucleosynthesis. For a wide variety of astrophysical conditions, including those in which fission recycling occurs, the half-lives have an important local impact on the second ($A$ $\approx$ 130) peak.

Abstract: From the American Civil Rights Movement onward, people (usually whites) have deployed Asian Americans to pathologize Latinx and blacks. Whites as well as some members of other ethnic minorities continue to cite Asian American achievement to dismiss calls to dismantle structural inequities or to exceptionalize Asian Americans. As a result, Asian Americans have a unclear racial identity – not truly “of color,” yet not white – or “the other white meat.” Can Asian American be the other white meat and people of color? If not, what are they? Imitation whites? Asian American females must manage intersecting racial and gender expectations, frequently crafting individual and group identities through negotiation with stereotypes and socially constructed conceptualizations. This chapter excavates how the model minority myth, Orientalism, and non-racialized otherness impact Asian American girls and women. By understanding the tensions between the social construction and lived experiences of “Asian-ness,” sport and exercise psychologists may develop the cultural competence and reflexivity necessary to work effectively with Asian American women and identify ways to encourage Asian Americans to engage with and adhere to physical activity and sports.

Abstract: The level structure of $^{31}\mathrm{Mg}$, which is located close to the region of the $N$ = 20 ``island of inversion'' in the nuclear chart, has been studied by $\ensuremath{\beta}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ spectroscopy with spin-polarized $^{31}\mathrm{Na}$. In $^{31}\mathrm{Mg}$, shape coexistence is expected as a result of subtle competition between the spherical mean field and the nuclear correlation which favors deformed configurations. In the present work, our unique method utilizing the anisotropic $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of spin-polarized $^{31}\mathrm{Na}$ enables us to firmly assign the spins of all positive-parity excited levels in $^{31}\mathrm{Mg}$ below the neutron separation energy at 2.3 MeV. Furthermore, by constructing a very detailed decay scheme, including two newly found levels, the spins of negative-parity levels are restricted. The examination of the spectroscopic information shows that the deformed rotational bands with ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}=1/{2}^{+}$ and $1/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, which have very similar structures to those observed in a higher excitation energy region of $^{25}\mathrm{Mg}$, appear as the ground-state and low-lying bands, respectively, in $^{31}\mathrm{Mg}$. The experimental levels of $^{31}\mathrm{Mg}$ are compared, on the level-by-level basis, with two types of theoretical calculations. These are, first, the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) plus generator coordinate method (GCM) and, second, the shell model with the EEdf1 interaction, which is microscopically derived from chiral effective field theory. It is understood that 8 levels among the experimental 11 levels are the members of four types of largely deformed rotational bands and 2 levels are of spherical nature. The $1/{2}^{+}$ 2.244-MeV level is successfully reproduced by the shell-model calculation with a dominant 4p4h configuration. The present work clearly demonstrates that various structures coexist in a low excitation energy region of $^{31}\mathrm{Mg}$.

This article describes the experiences of residents from Wai'anae and Waimānalo who were trained in a process called Building the Beloved Community, and facilitated group sessions for a community-based participatory research (CBPR) project around 'ai pono (eating healthy), seeking to understand Native Hawaiian community residents' perceptions of current and historical influences on eating. Community facilitators and observers engaged 40 residents to better understand peoples' life experiences around food.The community facilitators identified key principles derived from their training and facilitation experience, important elements for effective discussion circles, and the transformative outcomes experienced by all involved.By sharing these experiences, they hope to encourage use of a similar process to promote lifestyle changes in communities.

The expression of genes regulating lipid metabolism was determined, including SREBP-1c and SIRT-1 in liver and retroperitoneal adipose tissue. Blood cholesterol and triglycerides were higher in the adult offspring (at 110 days of age) fed a protein-restricted diet than in the adult offspring fed a normal diet. Protein restriction likely leads to inadequate detection of glucose levels, as suggested by the reduced expression of the gene for GCK, the sensor of glucose in the liver. The effects of a protein-restricted diet were highly dependent on the window in which this limitation occurred. There was a more adverse effect when the rats underwent protein restriction during gestation than lactation, leading to lower body weight and alterations in lipid metabolism in adult offspring.

Abstract: We report for the first time the β-decay scheme of Te140 (Z=52) to I140 (Z=53), with a specific focus on the Gamow-Teller strength along N=87 isotones. These results were obtained in an experiment performed at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory (RIBF), RIKEN, where the parent nuclide, Te140, was produced through the in-flight fission of a U238 beam at 345 MeV per nucleon impinging on a Be9 target. Based on data from the high-efficiency γ-ray spectrometer, EUROBALL-RIKEN Cluster Array (EURICA), we constructed a decay scheme of I140. The half-life of Te140 has been determined to be 350(5) ms. A level at 926 keV has been assigned as a (1+) state based on the logft value of 4.89(6). This (1+) state, commonly observed in odd-odd nuclei, can be interpreted in terms of the πh11/2νh9/2 configuration formed by the Gamow-Teller transition between a neutron in the h9/2 orbital and a proton in the h11/2 orbital. We observe a sharp contrast to this type of β-decay branching to the lower-lying 1+ states between I140 and I136, where we see a large reduction as the number of neutrons increases. This is in contrast to the prediction by large-scale shell model calculations. To investigate this type of the suppression, results of the Nilsson model calculations will be discussed. Along the isotones with N=87, we discuss a characteristic feature of the Gamow-Teller distributions at 1+ states with respect to the isospin difference.

Abstract: We study for the first time the internal structure of Te140 through the β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of Sb140. The very neutron-rich Sb140 nuclei with Z=51 and N=89 were produced by the in-flight fission of U238 beams at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, RIKEN. The half-life and spin-parity of Sb140 are reported as 173±12 ms and 3−, respectively. In addition to the excited states of Te140 produced by the β-decay branch, the β-delayed one-neutron and two-neutron emission branches were also established. By identifying the first 2+ and 4+ excited states of Te140, we found that Te isotopes persist in their vibrator character with E(4+)/E(2+)=2. We discuss the distinctive features manifest in this region revealed in pairs of isotopes with the same neutron holes and particles with respect to N=82.

Abstract: Effects of hypothyroidism on the glucose and insulin levels are controversial, and its impact on the Langerhans islet morphology of adult subjects has been poorly addressed. In spite of hypothyroidism and diabetes mellitus are more frequent in females than in males, most studies using animal models have been done in males. The effect of hypothyroidism on the immunolabeling of thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) and thyrotropin receptor (TSHR) of islet cells is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of hypothyroidism on the glucose and insulin concentrations, morphometry of islets, and immunostaining of TRs α1–2 and β1 and TSHR of islet cells in female rabbits. Control and hypothyroid (0.02 % of methimazole for 30 days) animals were used to quantify blood levels of glucose and insulin, density of islets, cross-sectional area (CSA) of islets, number of cells per islet, cell proliferation, and the immunolabeling of TRs α1–2, TRβ1, and TSHR. Student’s t or Mann–Whitney-U tests, two-way ANOVAs, and Fischer’s tests were applied. Concentrations of glucose and insulin, as well as the insulin resistance were similar between groups. Hypothyroidism did not affect the density or the CSA of islets. The analysis of islets by size showed that hypothyroidism reduced the cell number in large and medium islets, but not in small ones. In small islets, cell proliferation was increased. The immunoreactivity of TRα1–2, TRβ1, and TSHR was increased by hypothyroidism in all islet sizes. Our results show that hypothyroidism affects differentially the islet cells depending on the size of islets.

Abstract: Background Increased arterial stiffness is associated with cardiovascular diseases. Aortic augmentation index (AI) depends on arterial stiffness, although its relation with diabetic complications was not fully understood. Using radial AI as a surrogate index for aortic AI, we studied the relationship between radial AI and diabetic micro- and macroangiopathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
