1. Modal Testing of a Composite Bladed Disc Using Travelling Wave Excitation Method

Abstract

This research article presents a novel application of travelling wave excitation method applied to a composite bladed disc. The objective of this work is to develop a non-contact excitation method for research applications where (i) blades are non-ferromagnetic and (ii) damping is nominally high. This goal was achieved by spinning a disc, on which 14 powerful DC magnets were installed, in front the composite bladed disc. Small DC magnets were attached near each blade root to provide repellent forces. Twenty blades were manufactured with pre-pregs IM7–8552, using unidirectional stacking sequence and were installed on a rigid metallic mounting hub. The paper will present the design and make of the bladed disc, the theoretical study of normal and tangential forces in a magnet-to-magnets configuration and, finally, the experimental validation of a 14-DC magnetic exciter. The forced responses were measured in one test case by a 3D single point LDV system and in another test case by a Scanning LDV system. This work will also present an attempt to develop a DC electromagnetic exciter with its limitation and potential.

2. Thermal behavior of Zn and Cd complexes intercalated into γ-zirconium phosphate

Abstract

Intercalation compounds such as zinc and cadmium diamines complexes intercalated into the inorganic layered ion-exchanger γ-zirconium phosphate have been synthesized and characterized. The diamine content intercalated inside the host matrix depends on the ligand size; the complexes “in situ” formed depend on the metal ion exchanged. Only in the case of the 2,2′-bipyridyl amine, after cation exchange with Zn and Cd, is an increase of the interlayer distance observed and an energy variations from the IR measurements. All the prepared materials maintained thermal stability up to about 400 °C. At a higher temperature combustion of the complexes occurs depending on the ligand size.

4. Magnetic and transport properties of Co–Ag nanocrystalline particles

Abstract

Co-Ag nanocrystalline films deposited by Pulsed Laser Deposition were irradiated by excimer laser at different values of energy fluence. The microstructural modifications induced by such treatment were investigated (by atomic force, scanning and transmission electron microscopies) and correlated with the magnetic and magnetotransport properties. The results indicate that laser irradiation favors the silver grain growth and induces a segregation of a fraction of Co, driven by the interface energy, to sites energetically more favorable like Ag grain boundaries (as small grains with diameters less than 5 nm, to be compared to approximate to 10 nm in the as-deposited sample) and the film/substrate interface. Such microstructural variation leads to changes in the magnetic behavior and to an increase of the magnetoresistance below 10 kOe.

Abstract

Three different synthetic routes were used for the preparation of CdS nanoparticles and the samples were characterized structurally and optically. Sample composition, dimension and quantum confinement excitations are discussed and compared. Sharp edges present in the absorbance spectra indicated that these systems are promising for optoelectronic and photonic device applications.

Abstract

The synthesis and the comparative structural and morphological study of iron oxide nanoparticles in polystyrene-based ion-exchange resins and cellulosics are reported. The synthesis of magnetite was performed under nitrogen atmosphere by an irt situ method in the presence of the matrix itself. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy measurements led to a detailed characterization of matrix morphology and of magnetic particle structure, size and morphology. The results show that the matrix influences the iron oxide particle size; the average size is about 7nm in the resins and 25nm in the celluloses. In the resins, particles are present inside the pores and as aggregates on the surface of the resin beads, whereas in the cellulose they are present on the surface and in the swollen network of the microfibers constituting the single fibers. Abstract

Amateur contributions to professional publications have increased exponentially over the last decades in the field of Planetary Astronomy. Here we review the different domains of the field in which collaborations between professional and amateur astronomers are effective and regularly lead to scientific publications. We discuss the instruments, detectors, softwares and methodologies typically used by amateur astronomers to collect the scientific data in the different domains of interest. Amateur contributions to the monitoring of planets and interplanetary matter, characterization of asteroids and comets, as well as the determination of the physical properties of Kuiper Belt Objects and exoplanets are discussed., 123 pages, Accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy

Abstract

Constriction band syndrome represents a sporadic condition that may result in amputations, constrictions and other deformities of the fetal limbs and body. Prenatal diagnosis by two-dimensional ultrasound has been reported. We present a case of constriction band involving the upper arm in which the assessment by three-dimensional ultrasound significantly contributed to the diagnosis and the multidisciplinary counseling. In fact, multiplanar imaging and surface rendering allowed a clear depiction of the extent of the constriction, the club-hand deformity and the relationship between the amniotic band, the cord and the fetal limb. This case represents a unique and effective application of three-dimensional ultrasound in prenatal diagnosis.

Abstract

The Pena-Shokeir phenotype represents an autosomal recessive syndrome characterized by neurogenic arthrogryposis, facial anomalies and pulmonary hypoplasia. Prenatal diagnosis of this disease has been reported prospectively and in cases with positive family history. We describe here a patient who has had three consecutive pregnancies affected by the Pena-Shokeir syndrome. In these pregnancies, the onset of the arthrogryposis varied between the 12th and the 18th week of gestation. Therefore, the possibility of a variable chronological development of the main diagnostic feature of the syndrome, arthrogryposis, has to be taken into proper consideration while counseling families with a positive history for the Pena-Shokeir phenotype.

Abstract

International audience; Context: In 2003, the Sun and the Earth passed through both the equatorial plane of Jupiter and therefore the orbital planes of its main satellites. Aims: During this period, mutual eclipses and occultations were observed and we present the data collected. Methods: Light curves of mutual eclipses and occultations were recorded by the observers of the international campaign PHEMU03 organized by the Institut de mécanique céleste, Paris, France. Results: We completed 377 observations of 118 mutual events from 42 sites and the corresponding data are presented in this paper. For each observation, information about the telescope, receptor, site, and observational conditions are provided. Conclusions: This paper gathers all data and indicates a first estimate of its precision. This catalogue of these rare events should constitute an improved basis for accurate astrometric data useful in the development of dynamical models.

Abstract

Chemically ordered (L10) FePt nanoparticles were synthesized by a microemulsion technique and the ordered phase was obtained by heating a mixture of particles and lyophilized NaCl as the separating medium, avoiding coalescence. A chloroform suspension of L10 FePt nanoparticles was evaporated at room temperature, assisted by ultrasonic vibration, producing the arrangement of the particles on the substrate. Parallel lines and flower-like patterns were obtained, starting from a 4×10−3 M suspension and using higher dilutions, suggesting that the fast evaporation of chloroform allows the particles deposition on the substrate, following the propagation direction of the ultrasound waves and/or placement at a vibration node, depending on the concentration.

Abstract

The vaporization of SnS2(s) occurs following the equilibria SnS 2 ( s )→ 1 2 Sn 2 S 3 (s)+ 1 4 S 2 (g) Sn 2 S 3 ( s )→2SnS(s)+ 1 2 S 2 (g) SnS(s)→SnS(g) The vapour pressures over the condensed phases were measured by the simultaneous torsion-Knudsen effusion technique. The pressures of S2(g) over SnS2(s) and Sn2S3(s) and of SnS(g) over SnS(s) are expressed respectively by log p(kPa)=(12.41±0.40)−(11.3±0.3)× 3 T , δH 298 °=54.5±1.0 kL mol −1 log p(kPa)=(11.81±0.50)−(11.3±0.4)× 3 T , δH 298 °=112.0±2.0 kL mol −1 log p(kPa)=(9.40±0.10)−(10.7.3±0.1)× 3 T , δH 298 °=220.0±2.0 kL mol −1 where the standard enthalpies are derived by second- and third-law treatment of the results. From these data the standard heats of formation of SnS2(s) and Sn2S3(s) were calculated to be -148± 2 kJmol−1 and -253 ± 2 kJmol−1 respectively.

Abstract

In 1997 the Sun and the Earth passed through the equatorial plane of Jupiter and therefore through the orbital planes of its main satellites. During this period, mutual eclipses and occultations occurred and were observed. We investigate the precision of the catalogue to produce improved data for the development of dynamical models. Light curves of mutual eclipses and occultations were recorded by the observers of the international campaign PHEMU97 organized by the Institut de Mecanique Celeste, Paris, France. We made 275 observations of 148 mutual events from 42 sites. For each observation, information is given about the telescope, the receiver, the site and the observational conditions. This paper gathers together the data and gives a first estimate of the precision. The catalogue of these rare events represents a collection of improved accurate astrometric data useful for the development of dynamical models.

Abstract

Constriction band syndrome represents a sporadic condition that may result in amputations, constrictions and other deformities of the fetal limbs and body. Prenatal diagnosis by two-dimensional ultrasound has been reported. We present a case of constriction band involving the upper arm in which the assessment by three-dimensional ultrasound significantly contributed to the diagnosis and the multidisciplinary counseling. In fact, multiplanar imaging and surface rendering allowed a clear depiction of the extent of the constriction, the club-hand deformity and the relationship between the amniotic band, the cord and the fetal limb. This case represents a unique and effective application of three-dimensional ultrasound in prenatal diagnosis.

Abstract

The Pena-Shokeir phenotype represents an autosomal recessive syndrome characterized by neurogenic arthrogryposis, facial anomalies and pulmonary hypoplasia. Prenatal diagnosis of this disease has been reported prospectively and in cases with positive family history. We describe here a patient who has had three consecutive pregnancies affected by the Pena-Shokeir syndrome. In these pregnancies, the onset of the arthrogryposis varied between the 12th and the 18th week of gestation. Therefore, the possibility of a variable chronological development of the main diagnostic feature of the syndrome, arthrogryposis, has to be taken into proper consideration while counseling families with a positive history for the Pena-Shokeir phenotype.

International audience; In 1994-1996 the Sun and the Earth passed through the equatorial plane of Saturn and therefore through the orbital planes of its main satellites. During this period, phenomena involving seven of these satellites were observed. Light curves of eclipses by Saturn and of mutual eclipses and occultations were recorded by the observers of the international campaign PHESAT95 organized by the Institut de mécanique céleste, Paris, France. Herein, we report 66 observations of 43 mutual events from 16 sites. For each observation, information is given about the telescope, the receptor, the site and the observational conditions. This paper gathers together all these data and gives a first estimate of the precision providing accurate astrometric data useful for the development of dynamical models.

Abstract

Co-Ag films prepared by Pulsed Laser Deposition and showing GMR in the as deposited state, have been irradiated by excimer laser: the chemical and structural modification induced by such treatment have been studied by XPS and by atomic force and electron microscopies. The pulsed laser irradiation favors the nucleation of nanosized Co grains at Ag grain boundaries, resulting in an enhancement of the magnetoresistivity at low fields and low temperature. Indeed, after laser treatment, a doubled field sensitivity (δGMR/δH) at T=I0K, with respect to the untreated samples, has been observed. The correlation with the observed magnetic properties variations, is discussed.

Abstract

The worsening of air quality is an urgent human health issue of modern society. The outbreak of COVID-19 has made the improvement of air quality even more imperative, both for the general achievement of major health gains and to reduce the critical factors in the transmission of airborne diseases. Thus, the development of solutions for the filtration of airborne pollutants is pivotal. Electrospinning has gained wide attention as an effective fabrication technique for preparing ultrafine fibers which are specifically tailored for air filtration. Nevertheless, the utilization of harmful organic solvents is the major barrier for the large-scale applicability of electrospinning. The use of water-soluble synthetic polymers has attracted increasing attention as a 'green' solution in electrospinning. We reported an overview of the last five years of the scientific literature on the use of water-soluble synthetic polymers for the fabrication of multifunctional air filters layers. Most of recent studies have focused on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Various modifications of electrospun polymers have been also described. The use of water-soluble synthetic polymers can contribute to the scalability of electrospinning and pave the way to innovative applications. Further studies will be required to fully harness the potentiality of these 'greener' electrospinning processes.

Abstract

Background: Nivolumab was the first anti-programmed cell death 1 drug approved in Argentina for non-small-cell lung cancer treatment in the second-line setting., Materials and Methods: The present study was a multicenter, observational, retrospective study of patients with progression to stage IV NSCLC during platinum-based chemotherapy who had received nivolumab monotherapy in a drug-expanded access program in Argentina., Results: The data from 109 patients were assessed retrospectively for safety and clinical outcomes. The follow-up period was 8.83 months (interquartile range, 3.4-12.67); 57.8% were men, 29.4% were current smokers, and 78.0% had a diagnosis of nonsquamous cell cancer. The median number of chemotherapy lines before nivolumab was 2 (range, 1-4). Also, 59.6% had received radiotherapy and 89% had received platinum-based chemotherapy. The drug-related toxicity rate was 78.9%, the grade 2-3 toxicity rate was 28.4%, and 33.9% of patients had required corticosteroids. The treatment response was evaluated in 104 patients. The best response was a complete response in 2 (2%), partial response in 28 (27%), stable disease in 33 (32%), and progressive disease in 41 (39%). Univariate analysis revealed that the absence of corticosteroid use (P = .034), toxicity grade 1-3 (P = .0025), and performance status of ≤ 1 (P = .049) were associated with longer disease-free survival, performance status of ≤ 1 (P < .001), and toxicity grade 1-3 (P = .001) were associated with longer overall survival. On multivariate Cox regression analysis, toxicity grade 1-3 (hazard ratio [HR], 0.44; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.24-0.81; P = .008) and age ≤ 50 years (HR, 0.28; 95% CI, 0.13-0.61; P = .001) were associated with longer progression-free survival and corticosteroid use was associated with shorter progression-free survival (HR, 2.06; 95% CI, 1.22-3.48; P = .007)., Conclusions: The use of nivolumab in the real world setting in patients with heavily pretreated NSCLC was well tolerated and showed promising clinical efficacy. Abstract

Ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with a size <5 nm are emerging nanomaterials for their excellent biocompatibility, chemical stability, and tunable surface modifications. The applications explored include dual-modal or multi-modal imaging, drug delivery, theranostics and, more recently, magnetic resonance angiography. Good biocompatibility and biosafety are regarded as the preliminary requirements for their biomedical applications and further exploration in this field is still required. We previously synthesized and characterized ultrafine (average core size of 3 nm) silica-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide fluorescent nanoparticles, named sub-5 SIO-Fl, uniform in size, shape, chemical properties and composition. The cellular uptake and in vitro biocompatibility of the as-synthesized nanoparticles were demonstrated in a human colon cancer cellular model. Here, we investigated the biocompatibility of sub-5 SIO-Fl nanoparticles in human Amniotic Mesenchymal Stromal/Stem Cells (hAMSCs). Kinetic analysis of cellular uptake showed a quick nanoparticle internalization in the first hour, increasing over time and after long exposure (48 h), the uptake rate gradually slowed down. We demonstrated that after internalization, sub-5 SIO-Fl nanoparticles neither affect hAMSC growth, viability, morphology, cytoskeletal organization, cell cycle progression, immunophenotype, and the expression of pro-angiogenic and immunoregulatory paracrine factors nor the osteogenic and myogenic differentiation markers. Furthermore, sub-5 SIO-Fl nanoparticles were intravenously injected into mice to investigate the in vivo biodistribution and toxicity profile for a time period of 7 weeks. Our findings showed an immediate transient accumulation of nanoparticles in the kidney, followed by the liver and lungs, where iron contents increased over a 7-week period. Histopathology, hematology, serum pro-inflammatory response, body weight and mortality studies demonstrated a short- and long-term biocompatibility and biosafety profile with no apparent acute and chronic toxicity caused by these nanoparticles in mice. Overall, these results suggest the feasibility of using sub-5 SIO-Fl nanoparticles as a promising agent for stem cell magnetic targeting as well as for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in oncology.

Abstract

Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs), for their intriguing properties, have attracted a great interest as they can be employed in many different biomedical applications. In this multidisciplinary study, we synthetized and characterized ultrafine 3 nm superparamagnetic water-dispersible nanoparticles. By a facile and inexpensive one-pot approach, nanoparticles were coated with a shell of silica and contemporarily functionalized with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) dye. The obtained sub-5 nm silica-coated magnetic iron oxide fluorescent (sub-5 SIO-Fl) nanoparticles were assayed for cellular uptake, biocompatibility and cytotoxicity in a human colon cancer cellular model. By confocal microscopy analysis we demonstrated that nanoparticles as-synthesized are internalized and do not interfere with the CaCo-2 cell cytoskeletal organization nor with their cellular adhesion. We assessed that they do not exhibit cytotoxicity, providing evidence that they do not affect shape, proliferation, cellular viability, cell cycle distribution and progression. We further demonstrated at molecular level that these nanoparticles do not interfere with the expression of key differentiation markers and do not affect pro-inflammatory cytokines response in Caco-2 cells. Overall, these results showed the in vitro biocompatibility of the sub-5 SIO-Fl nanoparticles promising their safe employ for diagnostic and therapeutic biomedical applications.

35. PbS Colloidal Quantum Dot Photodetectors operating in the near infrared.

Abstract

Colloidal quantum dots have recently attracted lot of interest in the fabrication of optoelectronic devices due to their unique optical properties and their simple and low cost fabrication. PbS nanocrystals emerged as the most advanced colloidal material for near infrared photodetectors. In this work we report on the fabrication and characterization of PbS colloidal quantum dot photoconductors. In order to make devices suitable for the monolithic integration with silicon electronics, we propose a simple and low cost process for the fabrication of photodetectors and investigate their operation at very low voltage bias. Our photoconductors feature high responsivity and detectivity at 1.3 μm and 1 V bias with maximum values of 30 A/W and 2·10 10 cmHz 1/2 W -1 , respectively. Detectivity close to 10 11  cmHz 1/2 W -1 has been obtained resorting to bridge sensor readout.

Abstract

Mutations in MECP2 gene cause Rett syndrome (RTT), a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting around 1 in 10,000 female births. The clinical picture of RTT appears quite heterogeneous for each single feature. Mutations in MECP2 gene have been associated with the onset of RTT. The most known gene function consists of transcriptional repression of specific target genes, mainly by the binding of its methyl binding domain (MBD) to methylated CpG nucleotides and recruiting co-repressors and histone deacetylase binding to DNA by its transcription repressor domain (TRD). This study aimed at evaluating a cohort of 114 Rett syndrome (RTT) patients with a detailed scale measuring the different kinds of impairments produced by the syndrome. The sample included relatively large subsets of the most frequent mutations, so that genotype-phenotype correlations could be tested. Results revealed that frequent missense mutations showed a specific profile in different areas of impairment. The R306C mutation, considered as producing mild impairment, was associated to a moderate phenotype in which behavioural characteristics were mainly affected. A notable difference emerged by comparing mutations truncating the protein before and after the nuclear localization signal; such a difference concerned prevalently the motor-functional and autonomy skills of the patients, affecting the management of everyday activities., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

Constriction band syndrome represents a sporadic condition that may result in amputations, constrictions and other deformities of the fetal limbs and body. Prenatal diagnosis by two-dimensional ultrasound has been reported. We present a case of constriction band involving the upper arm in which the assessment by three-dimensional ultrasound significantly contributed to the diagnosis and the multidisciplinary counseling. In fact, multiplanar imaging and surface rendering allowed a clear depiction of the extent of the constriction, the club-hand deformity and the relationship between the amniotic band, the cord and the fetal limb. 39. Pena-Shokeir phenotype with variable onset in three consecutive pregnancies.

Abstract

The Pena-Shokeir phenotype represents an autosomal recessive syndrome characterized by neurogenic arthrogryposis, facial anomalies and pulmonary hypoplasia. Prenatal diagnosis of this disease has been reported prospectively and in cases with positive family history. We describe here a patient who has had three consecutive pregnancies affected by the Pena-Shokeir syndrome. In these pregnancies, the onset of the arthrogryposis varied between the 12th and the 18th week of gestation. Therefore, the possibility of a variable chronological development of the main diagnostic feature of the syndrome, arthrogryposis, has to be taken into proper consideration while counseling families with a positive history for the Pena-Shokeir phenotype.
