2. Vertically optimized phase separation with improved exciton diffusion enables efficient organic solar cells with thick active layers

Abstract

The development of organic solar cells (OSCs) with thick active layers is of crucial importance for the roll-to-roll printing of large-area solar panels. Unfortunately, increasing the active layer thickness usually results in a significant reduction in efficiency. Herein, we fabricated efficient thick-film OSCs with an active layer consisting of one polymer donor and two non-fullerene acceptors. The two acceptors were found to possess enlarged exciton diffusion length in the mixed phase, which is beneficial to exciton generation and dissociation. Additionally, layer by layer approach was employed to optimize the vertical phase separation. Benefiting from the synergetic effects of enlarged exciton diffusion length and graded vertical phase separation, an efficiency of 17.31% (certified value of 16.9%) is obtained for the 300 nm-thick OSC, with a short-circuit current density of 28.36 mA cm-2, and a high fill factor of 73.0%. Moreover, the device with an active layer thickness of 500 nm also shows an efficiency of 15.21%. This work provides valuable insights into the fabrication of OSCs with thick active layers.

6. Charge-discharge properties of tin dioxide for sodium-ion battery

Abstract

Tin dioxide was investigated as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries. The Na/SnO2 cell delivered a first discharge capacity of 747 mAh/g, but the first charge capacity was 150 mAh/g. The irreversible capacity in the first cycle was examined through characterization by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the SnO2 active material was not reduced fully to metallic Sn. Furrows and wrinkles were formed on the electrode surface owing to the volumetric expansion upon first discharge, which led to a deterioration of the electrode structure and a loss of electrical contact between the active materials. The electrochemical properties of Na/TiS2 cells fabricated from Na anodes and TiS2 cathodes and 1M sodium trifluoromethanesulfonate in tetraethyleneglycol dimethylether liquid electrolyte have been investigated. The discharge curve has two plateau regions of 2.1 V and 1.6 V. The loss of discharge capacity appeared mainly in the upper plateau (UP) region (2.0-2.6 V) and the discharge capacity in the low plateau (LP) region (0.8-2.0 V) does not decrease and is consistent during 40 cycles. The discharge process between Na and TiS2 has a complex reaction mechanism, the intercalation at the upper plateau region and the conversion at the low plateau region. Because, a distorted TiS2 phase appeared in the upper plateau, a new phase of NaxTiS2 was observed in the lower plateau, and the Na xTiS2 phase was disappeared after full discharge from the XRD and TEM results. The decrease of discharge capacity during cycling is occurred from the formation of NaxTiS2 phase in the cathode after full charging and is accumulated over cycling. © 2012 The Electrochemical Society.

11. High capacity cathode materials for Li-S batteries

Abstract

To enhance the stability of sulfur cathode for a high energy lithium-sulfur battery, sulfur-activated carbon (S-AC) composite was prepared by encapsulating sulfur into micropores of activated carbon using a solution-based processing technique. In the analysis using the prepared specimen of S-AC composite by the focused ion beam (FIB) technique, the elemental sulfur exists in a highly dispersed state inside the micropores of activated carbon, which has a large surface area and a narrow pore distribution. The S-AC composite was characterized through X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, selected area electron diffraction (SAED), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). A lithium-sulfur cell using the S-AC composite has a high first discharge capacity over 800 mA h g -1 S even at a high current density such as 2C (3200 mA g -1 S) and has good cycleability around 500 mA h g-1 S discharge capacity at the 50th cycle at the same current density. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Ni3S2 powder has been fabricated by mechanical alloying Ni and S powders and the electrochemical properties of Na/Ni 3S2 cells fabricated from Na anodes and Ni 3S2 cathodes and 1 M sodium trifluoromethanesulfonate in tetraethyleneglycol dimethylether liquid electrolyte have been investigated. Upon discharging, the Ni3S2 cathode transformed to amorphous Na2S, Ni and residual unconverted Ni3S 2. On charging, the pristine structure of Ni3S2 is fully recovered. The reversibility of this anode/cathode pair has been demonstrated and the discharge capacity loss of Na/Ni3S2 cells has been investigated over 100 cycles. From TEM, EDS, XRD, and EIS results, the degradation mechanism appears to be the formation of nano-particles of Ni3S2 and Na2S which become detached from the bulk cathode material causing the continuous increase in the interfacial resistance. Furthermore, many small cracks in Ni3S2 cathode material are caused during repeated cycling and this is an additional phenomenon that leads to further degradation of the discharge capacity during cycling. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. 13. Evaluation of sulfur and multi-walled carbon nanotube composite synthesized by dissolution and precipitation for Li/S batteries

Abstract

An elemental sulfur and multi-walled carbon nanotube (S-MWNT) composite was synthesized by dissolving sulfur in ammonium sul?des and then precipitating on MWNT. Morphology observation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) con?rmed that S-MWNT product was successfully prepared by incorporating sulfur into MWNT network. Without additional conducting material, the S-MWNT composite cathodes were prepared for electrochemical tests. The properties measured in discharge-charge cycling test showed that the composite had the initial discharge capacity of 1024 mAh g -1, which is about 61% sulfur utilization. However, in the subsequent cycling, the capacities faded. To determine the reason of rapid capacity drop, S-MWNT composite cathodes were compared in the cycling tests with varying three kinds of electrolytes and the cathode was subjected to physical force by rolling. The changes in the cycle performances proved that the deterioration of S-MWNT composite cathodes was not related to the electrolytes but to physical bonding that may not maintain the conducting path between sulfur and MWNT. © 2012 American Scientific Publishers.

Abstract

We investigated the first charge-discharge behavior and cycling property of Li batteries using MoS2 electrodes with multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNT) as a conducting agent. The MoS2 electrode was prepared using MWNT as the conducting agent. The battery gave a high first discharge capacity of 440 mAhg-1 with a plateau potential region at 1.1 V. The Li/MoS2 battery using MWNT showed a higher discharge capacity compared to acetylene black. After ten cycles of the battery using MWNT, the discharge capacity decreased to 120 mAhg-1, which corresponded to 30% of the first discharge capacity. Adding a carbon nanotube into the MoS 2 electrode improved the first discharge behavior, but did not affect the cycling property of the Li/MoS2 cell. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2010.

16. A cell permeable peptide inhibitor of NFAT inhibits macrophage cytokine expression and ameliorates experimental colitis

Abstract

Nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) plays a critical role in the development and function of immune and non-immune cells. Although NFAT is a central transcriptional regulator of T cell cytokines, its role in macrophage specific gene expression is less defined. Previous work from our group demonstrated that NFAT regulates Il12b gene expression in macrophages. Here, we further investigate NFAT function in murine macrophages and determined the effects of a cell permeable NFAT inhibitor peptide 11R-VIVIT on experimental colitis in mice. Treatment of bone marrow derived macrophages (BMDMs) with tacrolimus or 11R-VIVIT significantly inhibited LPS and LPS plus IFN-γ induced IL-12 p40 mRNA and protein expression. IL-12 p70 and IL-23 secretion were also decreased. NFAT nuclear translocation and binding to the IL-12 p40 promoter was reduced by NFAT inhibition. Experiments in BMDMs from IL-10 deficient (Il10 -/-) mice demonstrate that inhibition of IL-12 expression by 11R-VIVIT was independent of IL-10 expression. To test its therapeutic potential, 11R-VIVIT was administered systemically to Il10 -/- mice with piroxicam-induced colitis. 11R-VIVIT treated mice demonstrated significant improvement in colitis compared to mice treated with an inactive peptide. Moreover, decreased spontaneous secretion of IL-12 p40 and TNF in supernatants from colon explant cultures was demonstrated. In summary, NFAT, widely recognized for its role in T cell biology, also regulates important innate inflammatory pathways in macrophages. Selective blocking of NFAT via a cell permeable inhibitory peptide is a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases. © 2012 Elloumi et al.

Abstract

All-solid-state lithium/sulfur (Li/S) battery is prepared using siloxane cross-linked network solid electrolyte at room temperature. The solid electrolytes show high ionic conductivity and good electrochemical stability with lithium and sulfur. In the first discharge curve, all-solid-state Li/S battery shows three plateau potential regions of 2.4 V, 2.12 V and 2.00 V, respectively. The battery shows the first discharge capacity of 1044 mAh g -1-sulfur at room temperature. This first discharge capacity rapidly decreases in 4th cycle and remains at 512 mAh g -1-sulfur after 10 cycles. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract

To develop the battery with low cost and high energy density, Na/TEGDME/FeS cell was prepared using Ni-plated FeS powder. Electrochemical properties of Na/FeS cells were investigated by cyclic voltammogram measurement and charge-discharge tests. The Na/FeS cell showed a high initial discharge capacity of 525 mAh/g-FeS in the current density of 0.1C-rate. The FeS electrode showed two reduction peak potentials at 0.87 and 1.39 V and broad one oxidation peak between 1.23 V and 2.3 V. The discharge products might be sodium sulfide of Na2Sx (x = 1 to 5). The discharge capacity of 195 mAh/g-FeS was maintained after 150th cycle. © 2011 Advanced Study Center Co. Ltd.

20. Variations of structure and composition in magnesium incorporated hydroxyapatite/β-tricalcium phosphate

Abstract

The phase evolution of magnesium incorporated hydroxyapatite/ β-tricalcium phosphate (HA/β-TCP) ceramics of high purity prepared by solid-state reaction was investigated with the aid of x-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy (IR) in transmittance mode analysis. The dependence of the microstructure on the phase evolution of biphasic ceramics during natural sintering was also investigated as a function of Mg content. When sintered at 1100 °C, Mg is preferentially incorporated into the β-TCP phase rather than the HA phase. This Mg incorporation into the β-TCP effectively suppresses the phase transition from β- to α-TCP. With increasing sintering temperature, the solubility limit of the Mg in the β-TCP decreases and Mg starts to be either incorporated into the HA phase or segregated as free MgO. The decreased Mg content in the β-TCP facilitates the phase transition from β- into α-TCP, at 1300 °C or higher. Different processing methods on Mg addition show that the retarded phase transition from β- to α-TCP is the inherent property of Mg-doped HA/TCP. The variations in processing parameters mainly affect the microstructure instead of the phase evolution, leading to highly densified HA/β-TCP ceramics. © 2006 Materials Research Society.

21. New type of bioactive materials: Hydroxyapatite/α-wollastonite composites

Abstract

A new type of bioactive materials, hydroxyapatite (HA)/ α-wollastonite (α-Wol) composites, were prepared. The sintering behavior, phase evolution, and in vitro bioactivity of hydroxyapatite/α-wollastonite composites were examined. The properties of HA/α-Wol composites were quite different from those of HA ceramics or α-Wol ceramics. HA/α-Wol composites sintered 1300 °C for 2 h exhibited a dense microstructure consisting of grains in the range of 0.3-1.0 μm in diameter. During sintering, a complex phase evolution between HA and α-Wol was observed. At 1300 °C, the formation of the Si substituted HA and the additional α-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) were observed using Fourier transform infrared and x-ray diffraction analysis. Further heat treatment at 1350 °C transformed part of the HA and α-Wol into a new phase with the composition: Ca12P6 Si2O31. The in vitro bioactivity of the HA/ α-Wol composites with a weight ratio of 25:75 and 50:50 sintered at 1300 °C was better than that of α-Wol monophasic ceramics. This result revealed that the silica of α-Wol and the orthosilicate of Si substituted HA provided nucleation sites for the bonelike apatite layer. The phosphate present in the HA or α-TCP phases promoted the nucleation of a bonelike apatite layer on the surface of the composites. The dissolution rate of α-Wol phase in simulated body fluid was faster than α-TCP or HA phase. Therefore, HA/α-Wol composite is the bone replacement material of controllable bioactivity and degradation rate with relative content between HA and α-Wol phase. © 2005 Materials Research Society.

40. Malignant mixed Müllerian tumors of the uterus: sonographic spectrum.

Abstract

Objective: To describe the sonographic findings for malignant mixed Müllerian tumors (MMMTs) of the uterus with particular emphasis on their features on saline contrast sonohysterography (SCSH) and color Doppler sonography, and to determine how they relate to pathological findings. Methods: The SCSH and color Doppler findings in 29 histologically proven cases of uterine MMMT were reviewed retrospectively and their relationship to gross and histological findings were investigated. Results: Of the 29 uterine tumors, 16 were located only in the corpus, nine only in the fundus and four in both the corpus and fundus. Mean tumor size was 5.4 cm. The most common appearance was a polypoid mass projecting into the endometrial cavity, found in 23 cases. Twenty-eight tumors had an irregular surface, which was papillary in 20 cases and lobulated in eight. Most appeared heterogeneously isoechoic (n = 16) or hypoechoic (n = 12), occasionally with a trabecular appearance, and they often had clefts or fissure-like cystic areas (n = 10), necrosis (n = 4) or hemorrhagic areas (n = 7). Myometrial invasion was present in 27 cases and dilatation of the endometrial cavity was seen in 11. Color Doppler sonography showed moderate to marked vascularity in 20 out of the 24 cases in which it was performed, with a mean resistance index of 0.41, and appeared as feeding (n = 15) or randomly dispersed (n = 9) vessels. Conclusions: Uterine MMMTs have distinct sonographic features that are related to pathological findings. Knowledge of the sonographic appearance of MMMTs may facilitate diagnosis.
