21. Solvent Extraction of Co, Ni and Mn from NCM Sulfate Leaching Solution of Li(NCM)O2 Secondary Battery Scraps

Abstract

As a part of the study on recycling Li(NCM)O2 lithium-ion battery scraps, solvent extraction experiments were performed using different extraction agents such as PC88A, Cyanex272 and D2EHPA to separate Co, Ni and Mn from the leaching solution. When the ratio of Mn to Ni was about 0.4 in the leaching solution, the separation factor for Co and Mn was found to be less than 10 so that the separation of Co and Ni was insufficient. When solvent extraction was done using the solution with the lower Mn/Ni ratio of 0.05 where Mn was removed by potassium permanganate and chlorine dioxide, more than 99% of Mn could be extracted through five courses of extraction using 30vol% D2EHPA while the extraction rates of Co and Ni were around 17% and 11%, respectively. In the case that Mn was removed from the solution, the extraction rate of Co was higher than 99% whereas less than 7% Ni was extracted using Cyanex272 suggesting that Co and Ni elements were effectively separated.

Abstract

Ultrahigh‐temperature ceramics (UHTCs) exhibit remarkable hardness and resistance to oxidative ablation, making them suitable for use in hypersonic environments, such as hypersonic aircraft and space shuttles. However, their low fracture toughness limits their applications as engineering materials. In this study, zirconium diboride, an extremely hard and oxidation‐resistant UHTC, was sintered with high aspect ratio boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) to improve the fracture toughness of UHTC. Although the high aspect ratio BNNTs tend to become entangled and are inefficient in improving the fracture toughness of the composite, the use of plasma functionalization can effectively disperse the BNNTs in UHTC, resulting in the increase in the fracture toughness of the UHTC composite. 47. Grain Growth in the Nanocrystalline W–Cu and Cu–Pb Composite Powders Prepared by Mechanical Alloying

Abstract

The thermal behavior of the nanocrystalline W–Cu and Cu–Pb powders was investigated in order to gain thermal stability information for further application and also to elucidate the grain growth kinetics in an immiscible alloy system. The nanocrystalline alloy powders were prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) and characterized. Thermal behavior of this nanocrystalline alloy was analysed by DSC, XRD, SEM, TEM and EXAFS. The time exponent nand the activation energy for grain growth were determined from the grain size data. The nanocrystalline W, Cu and Pb have revealed lower nvalues than the polycrystalline ones. The activation energy of the nanocrystalline W, Cu, and Pb grain growth in MAW–Cu and Cu–Pb powders is 186.5 ± 1.0, 55.6 ±10.5 and 42.0 ± 3.9 kJ/mol, respectively. The melting point suppression of Pb crystalline embedded in Cu matrix in MA Cu–Pb powders can be estimated. On the basis of the grain growth parameter obtained in this study and available data in the literature, the grain growth features and kinetics in the nonequilibrium state of the immiscible alloy system are discussed.
