The increasing environmental challenges caused by pharmaceutical waste, especially antibiotics and contaminants, necessitate sustainable solutions. Cellulose-based membranes are considered advanced tools and show great potential as effective materials for the removal of drugs and organic contaminants. This review introduces an environmentally friendly composite membrane for the elimination of antibiotics and dye contaminants from water and food, without the use of toxic additives. The potential of cellulose-based membranes in reducing the impact on water quality and promoting environmental sustainability is emphasized. Additionally, the benefits of using biobased cellulose membranes in membrane biological reactors for the removal of antibiotics from pharmaceutical waste and milk are explored, presenting an innovative approach to achieving a circular economy. This review provides recent and comprehensive insights into membrane bioreactor technology, making it a valuable resource for researchers seeking efficient methods to break down antibiotics in industrial wastewater, particularly in the pharmaceutical and dairy industries.

Photometric stereo methods typically rely on RGB cameras and are usually performed in a dark room to avoid ambient illumination. Ambient illumination poses a great challenge in photometric stereo due to the restricted dynamic range of the RGB cameras. To address this limitation, we present a novel method, namely Event Fusion Photometric Stereo Network (EFPS-Net), which estimates the surface normals of an object in an ambient light environment by utilizing a deep fusion of RGB and event cameras. The high dynamic range of event cameras provides a broader perspective of light representations that RGB cameras cannot provide. Specifically, we propose an event interpolation method to obtain ample light information, which enables precise estimation of the surface normals of an object. By using RGB-event fused observation maps, our EFPS-Net outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods that depend only on RGB frames, resulting in a 7.94% reduction in mean average error. pH-sensitive P(MAA-g-EG) anionic hydrogel microparticles having an average diameter of approx. 4 microm were prepared by suspension photopolymerization. The pH-sensitive swelling and release behaviors of the P(MAA-g-EG) hydrogel microparticles were investigated as a biological on-off switch for the design of an oral protein delivery system triggered by external pH changes in the human GI tract. There was a drastic change of the equilibrium weight swelling ratio of P(MAA-g-EG) particles at a pH of around 5, which is the pK(a) of PMAA. At pH < 5, the particles were in a relatively collapsed state, while at a pH > 5 the particles swelled to a high degree. When the concentration of the cross-linker of the hydrogel increased, the swelling ratio of the P(MAA-g-EG) hydrogel microparticles decreased at a pH higher than 5 and the pK(a) of all the microparticles was in the pH range 4.0-6.0. In release experiments using Rhodamine B (Rh-B) as a model solute, the P(MAA-g-EG) hydrogel microparticles showed a pH-responsive release behavior. At low pH (pH 4.0) only a small amount of Rh-B was released while at high pH (pH 6.0) a relatively large amount of Rh-B was released from the hydrogel particles.

A nonionic-methylated branched hydrocarbon surfactant, octa(ethylene glycol) 2,6,8-trimethyl-4-nonyl ether (5b-C12E8) emulsifies up to 90% CO2 in water with polyhedral cells smaller than 10 microm, as characterized by optical microscopy. The stability of these concentrated CO2/water (C/W) emulsions increases with pressure and in some cases exceeds 24 h. An increase in pressure weakens the attractive van der Waals interactions between the CO2 cells across water and raises the disjoining pressure. It also enhances the solution of the surfactant tail and drives the surfactant from water towards the water-CO2 interface, as characterized by the change in emulsion phase behavior and the decrease in interfacial tension (gamma) to 2.1 mN/m. As the surfactant adsorption increases, the greater tendency for ion adsorption is likely to increase the electrostatic repulsion in the thin lamellae and raise the disjoining pressure. As pressure increases, the increase in disjoining pressure and decrease in the capillary pressure (due to the decrease in gamma) each favor greater stability of the lamellae against rupture. The electrical conductivity is predicted successfully as a function of Bruggeman's model for concentrated emulsions. Significant differences in the stability are observed for concentrated C/W emulsions at elevated pressure versus air/W or C/W foams at atmospheric pressure.

Electrostatic repulsion stabilizes micrometer-sized water droplets with spacings greater than 10 microm in an ultralow dielectric medium, CO2 (epsilon = 1.5), at elevated pressures. The morphology of the water/CO2 emulsion is characterized by optical microscopy and laser diffraction as a function of height. The counterions, stabilized with a nonionic, highly branched, stubby hydrocarbon surfactant, form an extremely thick double layer with a Debye screening length of 8.9 microm. As a result of the balance between electrostatic repulsion and the downward force due to gravity, the droplets formed a hexagonal crystalline lattice at the bottom of the high-pressure cell with spacings of over 10 microm. The osmotic pressure, calculated by solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation in the framework of the Wigner-Seitz cell model, is in good agreement with that determined from the sedimentation profile measured by laser diffraction. Thus, the long-ranged stabilization of the emulsion may be attributed to electrostatic stabilization. The ability to form new types of colloids in CO2 with electrostatic stabilization is beneficial because steric stabilization is often unsatisfactory because of poor solvation of the stabilizers.

We report electrostatic stabilization of micrometer-sized TiO(2) particles at long range (several micrometers) in liquid and supercritical CO(2) despite the ultralow dielectric constant, as low as 1.5. The counterions were solubilized in dry reverse micelles, formed with a low-molecular weight cationic perfluoropolyether trimethylammonium acetate surfactant, to prevent ion pairing with the particle surface. Dynamic light scattering and settling velocities indicate a particle diameter of 620-740 nm. The electrophoretic mobility of -2.3 x 10(-8) m(2)/V s indicated a particle charge on the order of -1.7 x 10(-17) C, or 105 elementary negative charges per particle. The balance of particle compression by an electric field versus electrostatic repulsion generated an amorphous arrangement of particles with 5-9 mum spacing, indicating Debye lengths greater than 1 mum. Scattering patterns also indicate that chains of particles may be achieved in CO(2) by dielectrophoresis with alternating fields. The electrostatic stabilization has been achieved by solubilizing a small concentration of counterions in only a small fraction of the reverse micelles in the double layer. Whereas many low-molecular weight surfactants have been shown to form reverse micelles in CO(2), very few polymers are able to stabilize micrometer-sized colloids sterically. Thus, electrostatic stabilization has the potential to expand markedly the domain of colloid science in apolar supercritical fluids.

Liquid and supercritical carbon dioxide swell potassium carboxylate perfluoropolyether (PFPE-K) cylindrical micelles in water to produce novel CO(2)-in-water (C/W) microemulsions. The swelling elongates the micelles significantly from 20 to 80 nm as the molar ratio of CO(2) in the micelles to surfactant (R(CO2)) reaches approximately 8. As the micelles swell to form microemulsions, the solubility of pyrene increases by a factor of ca. 10. Fluorescence spectra suggest that pyrene resides primarily in the low-polarity micelle core rather than in the palisade region. The results illustrate the ability of C/W microemulsions to solubilize both lipophilic and fluorophilic substances simultaneously.
