The development of the climate model MRI-ESM2 (Meteorological Research Institute Earth System Model version 2), which is planned for use in the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) simulations, involved significant improvements to the representation of clouds from the previous version MRI-CGCM3 (Meteorological Research Institute Coupled Global Climate Model version 3), which was used in the CMIP5 simulations. In particular, the serious lack of reflection of solar radiation over the Southern Ocean in MRI-CGCM3 was drastically improved in MRI-ESM2. The score of the spatial pattern of radiative fluxes at the top of the atmosphere for MRI-ESM2 is better than for any CMIP5 model. In this paper, we set out comprehensively the various modifications related to clouds that contribute to the improved cloud representation and the main impacts on the climate of each modification. The modifications cover various schemes and processes including the cloud scheme, turbulence scheme, cloud microphysics processes, interaction between cloud and convection schemes, resolution issues, cloud radiation processes, interaction with the aerosol model, and numerics. In addition, the new stratocumulus parameterization, which contributes considerably to increased low-cloud cover and reduced radiation bias over the Southern Ocean, and the improved cloud ice fall scheme, which alleviates the time-step dependency of cloud ice content, are described in detail.

The Prede POM sky radiometer is a filter radiometer deployed worldwide in the SKYNET international network. A new method called, Skyrad pack MRI version 2 (MRI v2), is here presented, to retrieve aerosol properties (size distribution, real and imaginary parts of the refractive index, single-scattering albedo, asymmetry factor, lidar ratio, and linear depolarization ratio), and water vapor and ozone column concentrations from the sky radiometer measurements. MRI v2 overcomes two limitations of previous methods (Skyrad pack versions 4.2 and 5, and MRI version 1). One is the use of all the wavelengths of 315, 340, 380, 400, 500, 675, 870, 940, 1020, 1627, and 2200 nm, if available from the sky radiometers, for example, in POM-02 models. The previous methods cannot use the wavelengths of 315, 940, 1627, and 2200 nm. This enables us to provide improved estimates of the aerosol optical properties, covering almost all the wavelengths of solar radiation. The other is the use of measurements in the principal plane geometry in addition to the solar almucantar plane geometry that is used in the previous versions. The measurements in the principal plane are regularly performed, however they are currently not exploited despite being useful in the case of small solar zenith angles, when the scattering angle distribution for almucantars becomes too small to yield useful information. Moreover, in the inversion algorithm, MRI v2 optimizes the smoothness constraints of the spectral dependencies of the refractive index and size distribution, and changes the contribution of the diffuse radiances to the cost function according to the aerosol optical depth. These overcome issues with the estimation of the size distribution and single-scattering albedo in the Skyrad pack version 4.2. The scattering model used here allows for non-spherical particles, improving results for mineral dust and permitting to evaluate the depolarization ratio. An assessment of the retrieval uncertainties using synthetic measurement show that best performance is obtained when the aerosol optical depths is larger than 0.2 at 500 nm. Improvements over the Skyrad pack versions 4.2 and 5 are obtained for the retrieved size distribution, imaginary part of the refractive index, single-scattering albedo, and lidar ratio at Tsukuba, Japan, while yielding comparable retrievals of the aerosol optical depth, real part of the refractive index, and asymmetry factor. A radiative closure study using surface solar irradiances from Baseline Surface Radiation Network and the parameters retrieved from MRI v2 showed consistency, with a positive bias of the simulated global irradiance, about +24 Wm−2 (+3 %). Furthermore, the MRI v2 retrievals of the refractive index, single-scattering albedo, asymmetry factor, and size distribution have been found in agreement with integrated profiles of aircraft in-situ measurements of two Saharan dust events at the Cape Verde archipelago, during the SAVEX-D 2015 field campaign.

This paper describes the Japan Meteorological Agency/Meteorological Research Institute-Coupled Prediction System version 2 (JMA/MRI-CPS2), which was put into operation in June 2015 for the purpose of performing seasonal predictions. JMA/MRI-CPS2 has various upgrades from its predecessor, JMA/MRI-CPS1, including improved resolution and physics in its atmospheric and oceanic components, introduction of an interactive sea-ice model and realistic initialization of its land component. Verification of extensive re-forecasts covering a 30-year period (1981–2010) demonstrates that JMA/MRI-CPS2 possesses improved seasonal predictive skills for both atmospheric and oceanic interannual variability as well as key coupled variability such as the El Nino–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). For ENSO prediction, the new system better represents the forecast uncertainty and transition/duration of ENSO phases. Our analysis suggests that the enhanced predictive skills are attributable to incremental improvements resulting from all of the changes, as is apparent in the beneficial effects of sea-ice coupling and land initialization on 2-m temperature predictions. JMA/MRI-CPS2 is capable of reasonably representing the seasonal cycle and secular trends of sea ice. The sea-ice coupling remarkably enhances the predictive capability for the Arctic 2-m temperature, indicating the importance of this factor, particularly for seasonal predictions in the Arctic region.

An operational nonhydrostatic mesoscale model has been developed by the Numerical Prediction Division (NPD) of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) in partnership with the Meteorological Research Institute (MRI). The model is based on the MRI/NPD unified nonhydrostatic model (MRI/NPD-NHM), while several modifications have been made for operational numerical weather prediction with a horizontal resolution of 10 km. A fourth-order advection scheme considering staggered grid configuration is implemented. The buoyancy term is directly evaluated from density perturbation. A time-splitting scheme for advection has been developed, where the low-order (second order) part of advection is modified in the latter half of the leapfrog time integration. Physical processes have also been revised, especially in the convective parameterization and PBL schemes. A turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) diagnostic scheme has been developed to overcome problems that arise to predict TKE. The model performance for mesoscale NWP has been verified by comparison with a former operational hydrostatic mesoscale model of JMA. It is found that the new nonhydrostatic mesoscale model outperforms the hydrostatic model in the prediction of synoptic fields and quantitative precipitation forecasts.

In this study, numerical simulations of ‘Yamase’ clouds were conducted using a nonhydrostatic model (NHM). Yamase clouds are typical maritime boundary-layer clouds that frequently appear over the sea off the east coast of the Sanriku District (northeast Honshu Island, Japan) during the summer season. The simulation period was from July to August 1993, when cool easterly winds (termed Yamase winds) prevailed. The NHM, with a horizontal grid of 40 km (NHM40) was integrated, nested within global objective analysis data, for one month by adopting sponge boundaries widely to lateral grids and upper layers, in order to reproduce a synoptic situation. The synoptic weather pattern is precisely reproduced in the long term integration.Then, in order to investigate the formation and evolution processes and structures of Yamase low-level clouds, multi-nesting simulations were conducted using the results of the one-month integration. The characteristic features of simulated Yamase clouds in terms of horizontal distribution, cloud shape and structures, and cloud water content, as well as the dominant mechanisms of cloud formation and evolution, strongly depend on the horizontal resolution of NHMs. The NHM with the high resolution of 100 m (NHM01), simulates convective structures similar to those observed from satellite images. Furthermore, the simulated liquid water path is close to the values observed in other Yamase cases. These results indicate that NHM01 reproduces the characteristic properties of the low-level clouds. In contrast, in simulations using the NHM with the low-resolution of 10 km (NHM10), the mixed layer is too moist and its height too low compared with observed data, and the liquid water path is overestimated. These errors are brought from the fact that the interaction between cloud radiation and formation at night time is too strong compared with the case of NHM01. Vertical heating profiles related to radiation, condensation, and evaporation in NHM10 are different from those generated by NHM01. This study suggests that improved parameterizations, such as a partial condensation scheme, and an adequate scheme of the buoyant production, should be introduced in low-resolution models such as NHM10.

It is well known that guanidinoacetic acid (GAA), precursor of creatine, is mainly producted by the kidney and the concentration of GAA in serum and urine and decreased in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). However, the mechanism for the excretion of this substance by the kidney still remains to be clarified. Therefore, this study is aimed to assess the restoration of the metabolic function of the transplanted kidney and the excretory manoeuvre by means of measurements of serum and urinary guanidino compounds, especially the GAA levels using fluorometric HPLC.
