赤外の波長領域で動作する共振器型自由電子レーザーを一定の条件で運転すれば、光の電場を数周期しか含まない、極短光パルスを生成することができる。このような「数サイクルFEL発振」では、発振に寄与する電子数の増大とともにピーク強度と変換効率の増大、パルス幅の短縮が見られ、二準位系における超放射とのアナロジーが成り立つ。さらに、数サイクル発振におけるショットノイズの役割、キャリアエンベロープ位相安定化の手法を紹介し、赤外FELを利用した強光子場科学への展開を示す。

The compact Energy Recovery Linac (cERL) has been in operation at KEK since 2013 to demonstrate ERL performance and develop ERL technology. Recently KEK has launched an infrared Free-Electron Laser (FEL) project with a competitive funding. The purpose of this project is to build a mid-infrared FEL based on the cERL, and to use that FEL as a light source for creating the processing database required for industrial lasers. The FEL system is a single-pass FEL composed of two 3-m undulators and a matching section between them. The FEL was constructed from October 2019 to May 2020. The commissioning was completed successfully, and the target power of the project was almost achieved.

超放射、超蛍光は、励起された多数の原子や分子が基底状態に戻るときに協働して強い光を放出する現象である。1954年の R. Dicke による超放射の理論的な予測以来、多くの実験で気体原子、分子からの超放射、超蛍光の現象が確認されてきた。近年では、気体からの超放射に加えて、量子ドットやナノ結晶といった固体からの超放射、加速器で作られる電子ビームからの超放射の実験が進んでいる。さらに、超放射相転移（熱平衡下での電磁場と電磁気分極の相転移）の研究、ニュートリノ研究に超放射の原理を応用する試みが行われ、脳の微小器官における超放射が議論されるなど、超放射、超蛍光の研究が広がっている。ここでは、超放射、超蛍光について分野を横断したシンポジウムを開催することで、新たな研究のアイデアを拓く一助とする。, 日本物理学会第77回年次大会

京都大学の共振器型FEL（KU-FEL）で発生した長波長赤外パルス（波長10μm）をガス中に集光したところ放電発光が見られた。ガス圧、ガス種、集光強度を変えながら、放電頻度、発光スペクトル、発光の波形を測定した。強光子場による種電子の生成、逆制動放射による電子加速、再衝突による雪崩的な電子増倍を経て放電に至るプロセスが、測定データから示唆される。, 日本物理学会第77回年次大会

The ionization of gases by ultrafast laser pulses is an important research topic as a fundamental process for the high-harmonic generation. The generation of few-cycle pulse at long-wavelength infrared (>8 um) has recently become possible with KU-FEL. We are conducting gas ionization experiments using these FEL pulses. So far, we have performed ionization experiments with nitrogen, air, and argon. 平成30年度光・量子飛躍フラッグシッププログラム(Q-LEAP)次世代レーザー基礎基盤研究「自由電子レーザーで駆動する高繰り返しアト秒光源のための基礎基盤技術の研究（課題番号：JPMXS0118070271）」としてQST、京大、日大、KEKで進めている中赤外自由電子レーザー(FEL)による高次高調波発生(HHG)のための基礎研究において、FELのキャリアエンベロープ位相(CEP)を安定化するためのCEP安定中赤外シード光源を開発している。そのためにファイバーレーザーで発生させた1030 nm中心のパルスを高非線形性フォトニック結晶ファイバー(PCF)に導入し、長波長シフトしたソリトンパルスを発生させ、上流で分岐した1030 nmパルスと差周波発生させる。本発表では、このPCFによる波長シフトについての現状とその詳細を報告する。, 第18回日本加速器学会年会

スポーク空洞は、同じ周波数ならば楕円空洞よりサイズが小さく、パッキングファクターも優れるという利点がある。LCS-γ/X線源を産業・学術分野への利用を図るため、ERL 加速器を小型化する超伝導スポーク空洞の開発を進めている。プレス加工したニオブ製のハーフスポーク２個を組合せ、電子ビーム溶接で製作したフルスポークの形状を評価するため、光学ステージとレーザー変位計を組み合わせた簡易３次元測定装置を製作し、設計形状との比較を行ったので、その結果について報告する。, 第18回⽇本加速器学会年会

Delbrück scattering, in which a gamma-ray interacting with a Coulomb field creates an electron-position pair, which subsequently annihilates to generate a gamma-ray which energy is almost identical with the incident gamma-ray, is one of important phenomena to study non-linear effects by QED and vacuum polarization. Koga and Hayakawa have presented that it is possible to measure selectively the amplitude of Delbrück scattering using linearly polarized gamma-ray beams. We have measured the scattered gamma-rays using1-MeVLCSgamma-rays, and calculated the expected spectrum using Geant4., Nuclear Photonics 2020

In the present study, we have developed a diagnostic tool to measure the energy-angle correlation of gamma-rays at MeV energies. In the measurement, we utilized a mosaic silicon crystal and a comb silicon crystal for diffracting a gamma-ray and obtaining the energy-angle correlation, because these crystals have angular acceptances large enough to obtain a practical gamma flux even after the diffraction [3]. An experiment was carried out at the laser Compton gamma-ray beamline at NewSUBARU. We generated a gamma-ray at 1.7 MeV by injecting a CO2 laser to the storage ring operated at 1 GeV and the crystal was put on the gamma-ray beam path to diffract the gamma-ray. We measured energy spectra of the diffracted gamma-ray by a high-purity Germanium detector with rotating the crystal. The measured spectra were used for reconstructing the energy-angle correlation of the gamma beam. We report the experimental procedure and the measurement results., Nuclear Photonics (NP2020)

The highest extraction efficiency (9.4%) of a free electron laser (FEL) oscillator has been achieved at the mid-infrared FEL facility of Kyoto University*. Because of the interaction between the electron beam and FEL electromagnetic field, a maximum electron energy decrease of 16% was observed. The measured energy decrease was consistent with the measured FEL spectrum. An FEL micro-pulse energy of approximately 100 micro-J with micro-pulse duration of 150 fs was observed. This result is an important milestone for the high-extraction-efficiency FEL oscillator and will contribute to the strong-field physics of atoms and molecules., the 12th International Particle Accelerator Conference - IPAC’21

In beam geometries where a directed γ-ray beam hits the surface of a coaxial high purity germanium detector (HPGe), the detector efficiency is sensitive to the position where γ-rays initially hit the detector surface because the structure of the detector is nonuniform. This may cause inaccuracy of the detector efficiency when measured using standard sources that are point-like sources emitting γ-rays isotropically. Obtaining a precise estimation of the full energy peak efficiency of the coaxial HPGe detector in the beam geometry for on-axis and off-axis measurements requires a Monte Carlo simulation. We performed Monte Carlo simulations that calculate the detector efficiency in the beam geometry. The effects of the off-axis distance and γ-ray beam size on the efficiency are quantitatively analyzed. We found that the intrinsic efficiency in the beam geometry is maximized when the beam hits the detector at specific off-axis distances. Our Monte Carlo calculations have been supported by nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments using laser Compton scattering γ-ray beams.

京大エネ研のKU-FELでは、DCD法と呼ばれるマクロパルス中で電子バンチの位相変調を導入することで電子バンチ列と共振器長との同期関係をスイッチする手法を導入し、マクロパルス初期では1パス当たりのレーザ増幅率が高い同期条件下でFELをある程度の強度まで増幅し、その後、完全同期長にシフトすることで、7μs程度のマクロパルスしか発生できない電子加速器を用いて、最大5.5%の引き出し効率の達成に成功した[5]。更に、既存の熱陰極高周波電子銃に設置されたLaB6陰極に外部からピコ秒深紫外パルスレーザを入射することで、電子バンチ当たりの電荷量を55 pCから190 pCに増大させ、FEL発振波長11 mにおいて引き出し効率を9.4%まで高める事に成功した。この条件下では共振器からミクロパルス当たり100 μJのFEL出力を取り出すことに成功しており、希ガスの電離や高次高調波発生などといった強光子場実験への応用展開を考えている。, 第34回日本放射光学会年会放射光科学合同シンポジウム

A mid-infrared Free Electron Laser (MIR-FEL) is a candidate to realize a high-repetition-rate atto-second hard X-ray source based on the high harmonic generation (HHG). A new project to conduct a proof of principle experiment of HHG driven by a MIR-FEL has been started since 2018. For this purpose, upgrade project of MIR-FEL at Kyoto University (KU-FEL) has been started to achieve high peak power and ultrashort pulse operation. As the first step of the upgrade, a photocathode drive laser was improved to enable long macro-pulse photocathode operation. The results of the long macro-pulse photocathode operation of KU-FEL will be presented.

A new EM process accounting for polarization effects of gamma--ray elastic scattering was implemented in Geant4. The process can handle an arbitrary state of polarization of the incident beam and correspondingly transfer polarization to the scattered beam. デルブリュック散乱とは原子核近傍の強いクーロン場によって、γ線が対生成した後に対消滅することでγ線が弾性散乱する現象であり、QEDの非線形効果の一つである。現在まで、デルブリュック散乱振幅のみを計測できていないが、直線偏光したレーザーコンプトン散乱γ線で計測を試みている。そのため、分子研のUVSOR放射光施設に、130Wの直線偏光のCO2レーザーを導入してγ線生成を行った。, 日本物理学会2020年秋季大会

近年、金属に代わる軽量で低コストな工業用素材として樹脂材料の需要が増えている。一方、中赤外波長領域は、物質固有の特異な吸収ピークがみられる波長領域であり、これは分子内の振動モードに由来している。様々な種類の樹脂材料の加工効率の向上を考えたとき、使用される樹脂材料ごとに異なるこの吸収特性を利用した非熱加工が理想的な加工手法と考えられる。しかしながら、各々の樹脂材料において、加工に最も適した波長や必要なパワー密度、パルス幅などの情報はほとんど得られていない。これは中赤外波長領域で、波長制御が可能な高出力の光源が存在しないことに起因している。KEKはNEDOからの競争的資金を得て、中赤外FEL（MIR-FEL）の開発を開始した。目的は、KEKにあるcERLを用いてMIR-FELを建設し、そのFELを産業用レーザーの開発に必要な加工用データベースを構築するための光源として使用することである。今年3月にアンジュレータ1台のみを用いた最初のFEL実験が行われ、自発放射よりも有意に増幅された光が観測された。さらに6月に2台のアンジュレータを用いたFEL実験が開始される予定である。本発表では、このFELシステムの概要とFEL発振実験で得られた性能について報告する。, 第17回日本加速器学会年会

レーザー・コンプトン散乱(LCS)によるガンマ線発生では、散乱角度と散乱光子（ガンマ線）エネルギーに相関があるため、コリメータで散乱角度を制限することで準単色化したガンマ線を利用できる。しかしながら、現実の実験では、散乱点において電子とレーザーが有限の角度広がりと運動量広がりを持っていることが、単色性を損なう原因となっている。LCSで発生したガンマ線が、エネルギーと角度の位相空間でどのような分布を持っているのかを測定し、散乱点の情報から計算される分布と比較すれば、LCSガンマ線の単色性を向上し、また、輝度を高めるために必要な情報が得られる。われわれは、シリコン結晶で回折したガンマ線のエネルギースペクトルにトモグラフィーの手法を組み合わせることで、LCSガンマ線のエネルギー角度分布＝(E,θ)分布を再構成できることを提案する。再構成の手法とニュースバルで行った実験結果について報告する。本研究は、科研費17H02818の成果である。, 第17回日本加速器学会年会

Energy-recovery linacs (ERLs) are promising for advanced synchrotron light sources, high-power free electron lasers (FELs), high-brightness gamma-ray sources , and electron–ion colliders. To demonstrate the critical technology of ERL-based light sources, we have designed and constructed a test accelerator, the compact ERL (cERL). Using advanced technology that includes a photocathode direct current (DC) electron gun and two types of 1.3-GHz-frequency superconducting cavities, the cERL was designed to be capable of recirculating low emittance ( ≤ 1 mm ⋅ mrad) and high average-current ( ≥ 10 mA) electron beams while recovering the beam energy. During initial commissioning, the cERL demonstrated successful recirculation of high-quality beams with normalized transverse emittance of ∼ 0.14 mm ⋅ mrad and momentum spread of ∼ 1.2 × 10−4 (rms) at a beam energy of 20 MeV and bunch charge below 100 fC. Energy recovery in the superconducting main linac was also demonstrated for high-average-current continuous-wave beams. These results constitute an important milestone toward realizing ERL-based light sources.

A free-electron laser (FEL) is a promising candidate for a high-power light source with wavelength tunability to investigate the nonlinear response of materials. Although the self-amplification spontaneous emission (SASE) scheme is not usually adopted in the mid-infrared wavelength range, it may have advantages such as layout simplicity, the possibility of producing a single pulse, and scalability to a short-wavelength facility. To demonstrate the operation of a mid-infrared SASE FEL system in an energy recovery linac (ERL) layout, we constructed an SASE FEL setup in cERL, a test facility of the superconducting linac with the ERL configuration. Despite the adverse circumstance of space charge effects due to the given boundary condition of the facility, we successfully established the beam condition at the undulators and observed FEL emission at a wavelength of 20 μm. The results show that the layout of cERL has the potential for serving as a mid-infrared light source.

We measured the refractive index of germanium and gold prisms at 1.7 MeV to explore if there are refractive index enhancements to 6th power of atomic number due to high order nonlinear process of Delbruck scattering in quantum electrodynamics. We measured the deflection by prisms using imaging plates and laser Compton scattering γ -rays with linear and random polarization. We used crystal and polycrystalline prisms for Au. The measured upper limit of the refractive index, δ , for crystal Ge, crystal Au, or polycrystal Au prisms is 4.0 × 10 − 8 , 2.9 × 10 − 7 , or 2.4 × 10 − 7 . We could not find any signature for high order nonlinear process. This result does not support the hypothesis suggested by Habs et al. (2012) [3] .

Elastic scattering of γ-rays is a significant interaction among γ-ray interactions with matter. Therefore, the planning of experiments involving measurements of γ-rays using Monte Carlo simulations usually includes elastic scattering. However, current simulation tools do not provide a complete picture of elastic scattering. The majority of these tools assume Rayleigh scattering is the primary contributor to elastic scattering and neglect other elastic scattering processes, such as nuclear Thomson and Delbruck scattering. Here, we develop a tabulation-based method to simulate elastic scattering in one of the most common open-source Monte Carlo simulation toolkits, GEANT4. We collectively include three processes, Rayleigh scattering, nuclear Thomson scattering, and Delbruck scattering. Our simulation more appropriately uses differential cross sections based on the second-order scattering matrix instead of current data, which are based on the form factor approximation. Moreover, the superposition of these processes is carefully taken into account emphasizing the complex nature of the scattering amplitudes. The simulation covers an energy range of 0.01 MeV ≤ E ≤ 3 MeV and all elements with atomic numbers of 1 ≤ Z ≤ 99. In addition, we validated our simulation by comparing the differential cross sections measured in earlier experiments with those extracted from the simulations. We find that the simulations are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. Differences between the experiments and the simulations are 21% for uranium, 24% for lead, 3% for tantalum, and 8% for cerium at 2.754 MeV. Coulomb corrections to the Delbruck amplitudes may account for the relatively large differences that appear at higher Z values.

A Neutron/Gamma-ray combined inspection system for hidden special nuclear materials (SNMs) in cargo containers has been developed under a program of Japan Science and Technology Agency in Japan. This inspection system consists of an active neutron-detection system for fast screening and a laser Compton backscattering gamma-ray source in coupling with nuclear resonance fluorescence (NRF) method for precise inspection. The inertial electrostatic confinement fusion device has been adopted as a neutron source and two neutron-detection methods, delayed neutron noise analysis method and high-energy neutron-detection method, have been developed to realize the fast screening system. The prototype system has been constructed and tested in the Reactor Research Institute, Kyoto University. For the generation of the laser Compton backscattering gamma-ray beam, a race track microtron accelerator has been used to reduce the size of the system. For the NRF measurement, an array of LaBr3(Ce) scintillation detectors has been adopted to realize a low-cost detection system. The prototype of the gamma-ray system has been demonstrated in the Kansai Photon Science Institute, National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology. By using numerical simulations based on the data taken from these prototype systems and the inspection-flow, the system designed by this program can detect 1 kg of highly enriched 235U (HEU) hidden in an empty 20-ft container within several minutes.
