As deformations of the main reflector of a radio telescope directly affect the observations, the evaluation of the deformation is extremely important. Dynamic characteristics of the main reflector of the Nobeyama 45 m radio telescope, Japan, are measured under two conditions: The first is when the pointing observation is in operation, and the second is when the reflector is stationary and is subjected to wind loads when the observation is out of operation. Dynamic characteristics of the main reflector are measured using piezoelectric accelerometers. When the telescope is in operation, a vibration mode with one nodal line horizontally or vertically on the reflector is induced, depending on whether the reflector is moving in the azimuthal or elevational planes, whereas under windy conditions, vibration modes that have two to four nodal lines are simultaneously induced. We estimate the typical CO-to-H-2 conversion factor of 1.7 M (circle dot) (K km s(-1) pc(2))(-1) within the disk using local thermal equilibrium-based and dust-based H-2 column densities, and measure the 1 kpc scale surface densities of the star formation rate (sigma(SFR)), super star clusters (sigma(SSC)), molecular gas mass, and star formation efficiency (SFE) toward the entire gas disk. These parameters show a peak in the southern part of the southern spiral arm (SFE similar to 10(-8.2) yr(-1), sigma(SFR) similar to 10(-0.6) M (circle dot) kpc(-2) yr(-1), sigma(SSC) similar to 6.0 kpc(-2)), which is likely attributable to the ongoing tidal interaction with the companion galaxy MCG-01-26-013, as well as toward the circumnuclear region. We also find that thermal free-free emission contributes to a significant fraction of the millimeter continuum emission at the position of the southern peak. These measurements imply that the peak of the southern arm is an active and young star-forming region, whereas the central part of NGC 3110 is a site of long-continued star formation. We suggest that during the early stage of the galaxy-galaxy interaction in which the mass ratio was high in NGC 3110, fragmentation along the main galaxy arms is an important driver of merger-induced star formation, and that massive gas inflow results in dusty nuclear starbursts., ALMA Japan Research Grant of NAOJ Chile Observatory NAOJALMA-0114, Spanish Government BG20/00224, National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA)

We are developing an ultra-wideband spectroscopic instrument, DESHIMA (DEep Spectroscopic HIgh-redshift MApper), based on the technologies of an on-chip filter-bank and Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detector (MKID) to investigate dusty star-burst galaxies in the distant universe at millimeter and submillimeter wavelength. An on-site experiment of DESHIMA was performed using the ASTE 10-m telescope. We established a responsivity model that converts frequency responses of the MKIDs to line-of-sight brightness temperature. We estimated two parameters of the responsivity model using a set of skydip data taken under various precipitable water vapor (PWV, 0.4-3.0 mm) conditions for each MKID. The line-of-sight brightness temperature of sky is estimated using an atmospheric transmission model and the PWVs. As a result, we obtain an average temperature calibration uncertainty of $1\sigma=4$%, which is smaller than other photometric biases. In addition, the average forward efficiency of 0.88 in our responsivity model is consistent with the value expected from the geometrical support structure of the telescope. We also estimate line-of-sight PWVs of each skydip observation using the frequency response of MKIDs, and confirm the consistency with PWVs reported by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Low Temperature Physics for LTD-18 special issue

Integrated superconducting spectrometer (ISS) technology will enable ultra-wideband, integral-field spectroscopy for (sub)millimeter-wave astronomy, in particular, for uncovering the dust-obscured cosmic star formation and galaxy evolution over cosmic time. Here we present the development of DESHIMA 2.0, an ISS for ultra-wideband spectroscopy toward high-redshift galaxies. DESHIMA 2.0 is designed to observe the 220-440 GHz band in a single shot, corresponding to a redshift range of $z$=3.3-7.6 for the ionized carbon emission ([C II] 158 $\mu$m). The first-light experiment of DESHIMA 1.0, using the 332-377 GHz band, has shown an excellent agreement among the on-sky measurements, the lab measurements, and the design. As a successor to DESHIMA 1.0, we plan the commissioning and the scientific observation campaign of DESHIMA 2.0 on the ASTE 10-m telescope in 2023. Ongoing upgrades for the full octave-bandwidth system include the wideband 347-channel chip design and the wideband quasi-optical system. For efficient measurements, we also develop the observation strategy using the mechanical fast sky-position chopper and the sky-noise removal technique based on a novel data-scientific approach. The mass distribution of dense cores is a potential key to understand the process of star formation. Applying dendrogram analysis to the CARMA-NRO Orion C$^{18}$O ($J$=1--0) data, we identify 2342 dense cores, about 22 \% of which have virial ratios smaller than 2, and can be classified as gravitationally bound cores. The derived core mass function (CMF) for bound starless cores which are not associate with protostars has a slope similar to Salpeter's initial mass function (IMF) for the mass range above 1 $M_\odot$, with a peak at $\sim$ 0.1 $M_\odot$. We divide the cloud into four parts based on the declination, OMC-1/2/3, OMC-4/5, L1641N/V380 Ori, and L1641C, and derive the CMFs in these regions. We find that starless cores with masses greater than 10 $M_\odot$ exist only in OMC-1/2/3, whereas the CMFs in OMC-4/5, L1641N, and L1641C are truncated at around 5--10 $M_\odot$. From the number ratio of bound starless cores and Class II objects in each subregion, the lifetime of bound starless cores is estimated to be 5--30 free-fall times, consistent with previous studies for other regions. In addition, we discuss core growth by mass accretion from the surrounding cloud material to explain the coincidence of peak masses between IMFs and CMFs. The mass accretion rate required for doubling the core mass within a core lifetime is larger than that of Bondi-Hoyle accretion by a factor of order 2. We probe the star formation properties of the gas in AzTEC-1 in the COSMOS field, one of the best resolved and brightest starburst galaxies at $z \approx 4.3$, forming stars at a rate > 1000 $\mathrm{M_{\odot}}\,\mathrm{yr^{-1}}$. Using recent ALMA observations, we study star formation in the galaxy nucleus and an off-center star-forming clump and measure a median star formation rate (SFR) surface density of $\Sigma^{\mathrm{nucleus}}_{\mathrm{SFR}} = 270\pm54$ and $\Sigma^{\mathrm{sfclump}}_{\mathrm{SFR}} = 170\pm38\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}\,\mathrm{kpc}^{-2}$, respectively. Following the analysis by Sharda et al. (2018), we estimate the molecular gas mass, freefall time and turbulent Mach number in these regions to predict $\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}$ from three star formation relations in the literature. The Kennicutt-Schmidt (Kennicutt 1998, KS) relation, which is based on the gas surface density, underestimates the $\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}$ in these regions by a factor 2-3. The $\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}$ we calculate from the single-freefall model of Krumholz et al. 2012 (KDM) is consistent with the measured $\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}$ in the nucleus and the star-forming clump within the uncertainties. The turbulence-regulated star formation relation by Salim et al. 2015 (SFK) agrees slightly better with the observations than the KDM relation. Our analysis reveals that an interplay between turbulence and gravity can help sustain high SFRs in high-redshift starbursts. Based on Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations, compact protoplanetary disks with dust radii of $r\lesssim 20-40$ au were found to be dominant in nearby low-mass star formation regions. However, their substructures have not been investigated because of the limited spatial resolution achieved so far. We apply a newly developed super-resolution imaging technique utilizing sparse modeling (SpM) to explore several au-scale structures in such compact disks. SpM imaging can directly solve for the incomplete sampling of visibilities in the spatial frequency and potentially improve the fidelity and effective spatial resolution of ALMA images. Here, we present the results of the application to the T Tau system. We use the ALMA 1.3 mm continuum data and achieve an effective spatial resolution of $\sim 30\%$ (5 au) compared with the conventional CLEAN beam size at a resolution of 17 au. The reconstructed image reveals a new annular gap structure at $r= 12$ au in the T Tau N compact disk with a dust radius of 24 au, and resolves the T Tau Sa and Sb binary into two sources. If the observed gap structure in the T Tau N disk is caused by an embedded planet, we estimate a Saturn-mass planet when the viscous parameter of the disk is $10^{-3}$. Ultimately, ALMA observations with enough angular resolution and sensitivity should be able to verify the consistency of the super-resolution imaging and definitely confirm the existence of this disk substructure., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present a detailed investigation of millimeter-wave line emitters ALMA J010748.3-173028 (ALMA-J0107a) and ALMA J010747.0-173010 (ALMA-J0107b), which were serendipitously uncovered in the background of the nearby galaxy VV114 with spectral scan observations at $\lambda$ = 2 - 3 mm. Via Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) detection of CO(4-3), CO(3-2), and [CI](1-0) lines for both sources, their spectroscopic redshifts are unambiguously determined to be $z= 2.4666\pm0.0002$ and $z=2.3100\pm0.0002$, respectively. We obtain the apparent molecular gas masses $M_{\rm gas}$ of these two line emitters from [CI] line fluxes as $(11.2 \pm 3.1) \times 10^{10} M_\odot$ and $(4.2 \pm 1.2) \times 10^{10} M_\odot$, respectively. The observed CO(4-3) velocity field of ALMA-J0107a exhibits a clear velocity gradient across the CO disk, and we find that ALMA-J0107a is characterized by an inclined rotating disk with a significant turbulence, that is, a deprojected maximum rotation velocity to velocity dispersion ratio $v_{\rm max}/\sigma_{v}$ of $1.3 \pm 0.3$. We find that the dynamical mass of ALMA-J0107a within the CO-emitting disk computed from the derived kinetic parameters, $(1.1 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{10}\ M_\odot$, is an order of magnitude smaller than the molecular gas mass derived from dust continuum emission, $(3.2\pm1.6)\times10^{11}\ M_{\odot}$. We suggest this source is magnified by a gravitational lens with a magnification of $\mu \gtrsim10$, which is consistent with the measured offset from the empirical correlation between CO-line luminosity and width., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have performed an unbiased dense core survey toward the Orion A Giant Molecular Cloud in the C$^{18}$O ($J$=1--0) emission line taken with the Nobeyama Radio Observatory (NRO) 45-m telescope. The effective angular resolution of the map is 26", which corresponds to $\sim$ 0.05 pc at a distance of 414 pc. By using the Herschel-Planck H$_2$ column density map, we calculate the C$^{18}$O fractional abundance and find that it is roughly constant over the column density range of $\lesssim$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{22}$ cm$^{-3}$, although a trend of C$^{18}$O depletion is determined toward higher column density. Therefore, C$^{18}$O intensity can follow the cloud structure reasonably well. The mean C$^{18}$O abundance in Orion A is estimated to be 5.7$\times$10$^{-7}$, which is about 3 times larger than the fiducial value. We identified 746 C$^{18}$O cores with astrodendro and classified 709 cores as starless cores. We compute the core masses by decomposing the Herschel-Planck dust column density using the relative proportions of the C$^{18}$O integrated intensities of line-of-sight components. Applying this procedure, we attempt to remove the contribution of the background emission, i.e., the ambient gas outside the cores. Then, we derived mass function for starless cores and found that it resembles the stellar initial mass function (IMF). The CMF for starless cores, $dN/dM$, is fitted with a power-law relation of $M^\alpha$ with a power index of $\alpha = -$2.25$\pm$ 0.16 at the high-mass slope ($\gtrsim$ 0.44 $M_\odot$). We also found that the ratio of each core mass to the total mass integrated along the line of sight is significantly large. Therefore, in the previous studies, the core masses derived from the dust image are likely to be overestimated at least by a factor of a few. Takemura, H., et al., Applying dendrogram analysis to the CARMA-NRO C18O (J = 1-0) data having an angular resolution of ∼8″, we identified 692 dense cores in the Orion Nebula Cluster region. Using this core sample, we compare the core and initial stellar mass functions in the same area to quantify the step from cores to stars. About 22% of the identified cores are gravitationally bound. The derived core mass function (CMF) for starless cores has a slope similar to Salpeter's stellar initial mass function (IMF) for the mass range above 1 M o˙, consistent with previous studies. Our CMF has a peak at a subsolar mass of ∼0.1 M o˙, which is comparable to the peak mass of the IMF derived in the same area. We also find that the current star formation rate is consistent with the picture in which stars are born only from self-gravitating starless cores. However, the cores must gain additional gas from the surroundings to reproduce the current IMF (e.g., its slope and peak mass), because the core mass cannot be accreted onto the star with 100% efficiency. We present a concept of a millimeter wavefront sensor that allows real-time sensing of the surface of a ground-based millimeter/submillimeter telescope. It is becoming important for ground-based millimeter/submillimeter astronomy to make telescopes larger with keeping their surface accurate. To establish `millimetric adaptive optics (MAO)' that instantaneously corrects the wavefront degradation induced by deformation of telescope optics, our wavefront sensor based on radio interferometry measures changes in excess path lengths from characteristic positions on the primary mirror surface to the focal plane. This plays a fundamental role in planned 50-m class submillimeter telescopes such as LST and AtLAST., 9 pages, 5 figures. Published in SPIE Proc

The coldest and densest structures of gas and dust in the Universe have unique spectral signatures across the (sub-)millimetre bands (υ ≈30 - 950 GHz). The current generation of single dish facilities has given a glimpse of the potential for discovery, while sub-mm interferometers have presented a high resolution view into the finer details of known targets or in small-area deep fields. However, significant advances in our understanding of such cold and dense structures are now hampered by the limited sensitivity and angular resolution of our sub-mm view of the Universe at larger scales. In this context, we present the case for a new transformational astronomical facility in the 2030s, the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimetre Telescope (AtLAST). AtLAST is a concept for a 50-m-class single dish telescope, with a high throughput provided by a 2 deg - diameter Field of View, located on a high, dry site in the Atacama with good atmospheric transmission up to υ ~1 THz, and fully powered by renewable energy. We envision AtLAST as a facility operated by an international partnership with a suite of instruments to deliver the transformative science that cannot be achieved with current or in-construction observatories. As an 50m-diameter telescope with a full complement of advanced instrumentation, including highly multiplexed high-resolution spectrometers, continuum cameras and integral field units, AtLAST will have mapping speeds hundreds of times greater than current or planned large aperture (< 12m) facilities. By reaching confusion limits below L* in the distant Universe, resolving low-mass protostellar cores at the distance of the Galactic Centre, and directly mapping both the cold and the hot (the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect) circumgalactic medium of galaxies, AtLAST will enable a fundamentally new understanding of the sub-mm Universe.

DESHIMA 2.0 is a single-pixel ISS spectrometer for the ASTE 10-m telescope, designed to observe the 220-440 GHz band in a single shot, corresponding to a [CII] redshift range of z=3.3-7.6. The first-light experiment of DESHIMA, using a 332-377 GHz configuration has shown excellent consistency between the performance derived from on-sky measurements, lab-measurements and the design. Ongoing upgrades towards the octave-bandwidth full system include the development of a filterbank chip with ~350 channels and higher optical efficiency, a wideband quasioptical design, and observing methods for efficiently removing the atmosphere.

We present a high-resolution (2.5 au) multiband analysis of the protoplanetary disk around TW Hya using ALMA long baseline data at Bands 3, 4, 6, and 7. We aim to reconstruct a high-sensitivity millimeter continuum image and revisit the spectral index distribution. The imaging is performed by combining new ALMA data at Bands 4 and 6 with available archive data. Two methods are employed to reconstruct the images; multi-frequency synthesis (MFS) and the fiducial image-oriented method, where each band is imaged separately and the frequency dependence is fitted pixel by pixel. We find that the MFS imaging with the second order of Taylor expansion can reproduce the frequency dependence of the continuum emission between Bands 3 and 7 in a manner consistent with previous studies and is a reasonable method to reconstruct the spectral index map. The image-oriented method provides a spectral index map consistent with the MFS imaging, but with a two times lower resolution. Mock observations of an intensity model were conducted to validate the images from the two methods. We present the results of ALMA observations toward the low-mass Class-0 binary system, VLA 1623Aab in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud in $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O(2--1) lines. Our $^{12}$CO ($J$=2--1) data reveal that the VLA 1623 outflow consists of twin spatially overlapped outflows/jets. The redshifted northwestern jet exhibits the three cycles of wiggle with a spatial period of 1360$\pm$10 au, corresponding to a time period of 180 yr. The wiggle-like structure is also found in the position-velocity (PV) diagram, showing an amplitude in velocity of about 0.9 km s$^{-1}$. Both the period and the velocity amplitude of the wiggle are roughly consistent with those expected from the binary parameters, i.e., the orbital period (460$\pm$20 yr) and the Keplerian velocity (2.2 km s$^{-1}$). Our $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O images reveal the nature of the dense gas in the two cm/mm sources, VLA 1623-B and -W, and its relation to the outflows, and strongly support the previous interpretation that both are shocked cloudlets. The driving sources of the twin molecular outflows are, therefore, likely to be within the VLA 1623Aab binary. The axes of the two molecular outflows are estimated to be inclined by 70$\arcdeg$ from each other across the plane of sky, implying that the associated protostellar disks are also misaligned by $70\arcdeg$. Such a misalignment, together with a small binary separation of 34 au in the one of the youngest protobinary systems known, is difficult to explain by models of disk fragmentation in quiescent environments. We report the results of the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) 15 mm observation of the Phoenix galaxy cluster possessing an extreme star-burst brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) at the cluster center. We spatially resolved radio emission around the BCG, and found diffuse bipolar and bar-shape structures extending from the active galactic nucleus (AGN) of the BCG. They are likely radio jets/lobes, whose sizes are ~10-20 kpc and locations are aligned with X-ray cavities. If we assume that the radio jets/lobes expand with the sound velocity, their ages are estimated to be ~10 Myr. We also found compact radio emissions near the center and suggest that they are another young bipolar jets with ~1 Myr of age. Moreover, we found extended radio emission surrounding the AGN and discussed the possibility that the component is a product of the cooling flow, by considering synchrotron radiation partially absorbed by molecular clumps, free-free emission from the warm ionized gas, and the spinning dust emission from dusty circum-galactic medium., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted in March 29 2019, accepted for publication in PASJ in April 12 2020

We present measurements of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) toward SPT-CL J2334-4243 (the Phoenix galaxy cluster) at z=0.597 by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Band 3. The SZE is imaged at 5" resolution (corresponding to the physical scale of 23kpc/h) within 200kpc/h from the central galaxy with the peak signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 11. Combined with the Chandra X-ray image, the ALMA SZE data further allow for non-parametric deprojection of electron temperature, density, and entropy. Our method can minimize contamination by the central AGN and the X-ray absorbing gas within the cluster, both of which largely affect the X-ray spectrum. We find no significant asymmetry or disturbance in the SZE image within the current measurement errors. The detected SZE signal agrees well with the average pressure profile of local cool-core clusters. Unlike any other known clusters, however, gas temperature drops by at least a factor of 5 toward the center. We identify ~6x10^{11} M_sun cool gas with temperature ~3keV in the inner 20kpc/h. Taken together, our results imply that the gas is indeed cooling efficiently and nearly isobarically down to this radius in the Phoenix cluster., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures. With an emphasis on improving the fidelity even in super-resolution regimes, new imaging techniques have been intensively developed over the last several years, which may provide substantial improvements to the interferometric observation of protoplanetary disks. In this study, sparse modeling (SpM) is applied for the first time to observational data sets taken by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The two data sets used in this study were taken independently using different array configurations at Band 7 (330 GHz), targeting the protoplanetary disk around HD 142527; one in the shorter-baseline array configuration (~ 430 m), and the other in the longer-baseline array configuration (~ 1570 m). The image resolutions reconstructed from the two data sets are different by a factor of ~ 3. We confirm that the previously known disk structures appear on the images produced by both SpM and CLEAN at the standard beam size. The image reconstructed from the shorter-baseline data using the SpM matches that obtained with the longer-baseline data using CLEAN, achieving a super-resolution image from which a structure finer than the beam size can be reproduced. Our results demonstrate that on-going intensive development in the SpM imaging technique is beneficial to imaging with ALMA.

Submillimeter bright galaxies in the early Universe are vigorously forming stars at ~1000 times higher rate than the Milky Way. A large fraction of stars is formed in the central 1 kiloparsec region, that is comparable in size to massive, quiescent galaxies found at the peak of the cosmic star formation history, and eventually the core of giant elliptical galaxies in the present-day Universe. However, the physical and kinematic properties inside a compact starburst core are poorly understood because dissecting it requires angular resolution even higher than the Hubble Space Telescope can offer. Here we report 550 parsec-resolution observations of gas and dust in the brightest unlensed submillimeter galaxy at z=4.3. We map out for the first time the spatial and kinematic structure of molecular gas inside the heavily dust-obscured core. The gas distribution is clumpy while the underlying disk is rotation-supported. Exploiting the high-quality map of molecular gas mass surface density, we find a strong evidence that the starburst disk is gravitationally unstable, implying that the self-gravity of gas overcomes the differential rotation and the internal pressure by stellar radiation feedback. The observed molecular gas would be consumed by star formation in a timescale of 100 million years, that is comparable to those in merging starburst galaxies. For submillimeter spectroscopy with ground-based single-dish telescopes, removing noise contribution from the Earth's atmosphere and the instrument is essential. For this purpose, here we propose a new method based on a data-scientific approach. The key technique is statistical matrix decomposition that automatically separates the signals of astronomical emission lines from the drift noise components in the fast-sampled (1--10 Hz) time-series spectra obtained by a position-switching (PSW) observation. Because the proposed method does not apply subtraction between two sets of noisy data (i.e., on-source and off-source spectra), it improves the observation sensitivity by a factor of $\sqrt{2}$. It also reduces artificial signals such as baseline ripples on a spectrum, which may also help to improve the effective sensitivity. We demonstrate this improvement by using the spectroscopic data of emission lines toward a high-redshift galaxy observed with a 2-mm receiver on the 50-m Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT). Since the proposed method is carried out offline and no additional measurements are required, it offers an instant improvement on the spectra reduced so far with the conventional method. We present the results of data analysis of the [CI] ($^{3}P_{1}$-$^{3}P_{0}$) emission from the $\rho$ Ophiuchi A photon-dominated region (PDR) obtained in the ALMA ACA stand-alone mode with a spatial resolution of 2.''6 (360 au). The [CI] emission shows filamentary structures with a width of $\sim$1000 au, which are adjacent to the shell structure seen in the 4.5 $\mu$m map. We found that the 4.5 $\mu$m emission, C$^0$, and CO are distributed in this order from the excitation star (S1) in a complementary pattern. These results indicate that [CI] is emitted from a thin layer in the PDR generated by the excitation star, as predicted in the plane-parallel PDR model. In addition, extended [CI] emission was also detected, which shows nearly uniform integrated intensity over the entire field-of-view (1.'6$\times$1.'6). The line profile of the extended component is different from that of the above shell component. The column density ratio of C$^0$ to CO in the extended component was $\sim$2, which is significantly higher than those of Galactic massive star-forming regions (0.1-0.2). These results suggest that [CI] is emitted also from the extended gas with a density of $n_\mathrm{H_2} \sim 10^3$ cm$^{-3}$, which is not greatly affected by the excitation star., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, ApJL accepted

We report the study of far-IR sizes of submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in relation to their dust-obscured star formation rate (SFR) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) presence, determined using mid-IR photometry. We determined the millimeter-wave ($\lambda_{\rm obs}=1100 \mu$m) sizes of 69 ALMA-identified SMGs, selected with $\geq10$$\sigma$ confidence on ALMA images ($F_{\rm 1100 \mu m}=1.7$--7.4 mJy). We found that all the SMGs are located above an avoidance region in the millimeter size-flux plane, as expected by the Eddington limit for star formation. In order to understand what drives the different millimeter-wave sizes in SMGs, we investigated the relation between millimeter-wave size and AGN fraction for 25 of our SMGs at $z=1$--3. We found that the SMGs for which the mid-IR emission is dominated by star formation or AGN have extended millimeter-sizes, with respective median $R_{\rm c,e} = 1.6^{+0.34}_{-0.21}$ and 1.5$^{+0.93}_{-0.24}$ kpc. Instead, the SMGs for which the mid-IR emission corresponds to star-forming/AGN composites have more compact millimeter-wave sizes, with median $R_{\rm c,e}=1.0^{+0.20}_{-0.20}$ kpc. The relation between millimeter-wave size and AGN fraction suggests that this size may be related to the evolutionary stage of the SMG. The very compact sizes for composite star-forming/AGN systems could be explained by supermassive black holes growing rapidly during the SMG coalescing, star-formation phase., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We carried out mapping observations toward three nearby molecular clouds, Orion A, Aquila Rift, and M17, using a new 100 GHz receiver, FOREST, on the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. In the present paper, we describe the details of the data obtained such as intensity calibration, data sensitivity, angular resolution, and velocity resolution. Each target contains at least one high-mass star-forming region. The target molecular lines were $^{12}$CO ($J = 1 - 0$), $^{13}$CO ($J = 1 - 0$), C$^{18}$O ($J = 1 - 0$), N$_2$H$^+$ ($J=1-0$), and CCS ($J_N=8_7-7_6$), with which we covered the density range of 10$^2$ cm$^{-3}$ to 10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$ with an angular resolution of $\sim 20\arcsec$ and a velocity resolution of $\sim$ 0.1 km s$^{-1}$. Assuming the representative distances of 414 pc, 436 pc, and 2.1 kpc, the maps of Orion A, Aquila Rift, and M17 cover most of the densest parts with areas of about 7 pc $\times$ 15 pc, 7 pc $\times$ 7 pc, and 36 pc $\times$ 18 pc, respectively. On the basis of the $^{13}$CO column density distribution, the total molecular masses are derived to be $3.86 \times 10^4 M_\odot$, $2.67 \times 10^4 M_\odot$, and $8.1\times 10^5 M_\odot$ for Orion A, Aquila Rift, and M17, respectively. For all the clouds, the H$_2$ column density exceeds the theoretical threshold for high-mass star formation of $\gtrsim$ 1 g cm$^{-2}$, only toward the regions which contain current high-mass star-forming sites. For other areas, further mass accretion or dynamical compression would be necessary for future high-mass star formation. This is consistent with the current star formation activity. Using the $^{12}$CO data, we demonstrate that our data have enough capability to identify molecular outflows, and for Aquila Rift, we identify 4 new outflow candidates. We report the detection of an excess in dust continuum emission at 233~GHz (1.3~mm in wavelength) in the protoplanetary disk around TW~Hya revealed through high-sensitivity observations at $\sim$3~au resolution with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The sensitivity of the 233~GHz image has been improved by a factor of 3 with regard to that of our previous cycle 3 observations. The overall structure is mostly axisymmetric, and there are apparent gaps at 25 and 41 au as previously reported. The most remarkable new finding is a few au-scale excess emission in the south-west part of the protoplanetary disk. The excess emission is located at 52 au from the disk center and is 1.5 times brighter than the surrounding protoplanetary disk at a significance of 12$\sigma$. We performed a visibility fitting to the extracted emission after subtracting the axisymmetric protoplanetary disk emission and found that the inferred size and the total flux density of the excess emission are 4.4$\times$1.0~au and 250~$\mu$Jy, respectively. The dust mass of the excess emission corresponds to 0.03~$M_\oplus$ if a dust temperature of 18~K is assumed. Since the excess emission can also be marginally identified in the Band 7 image at almost the same position, the feature is unlikely to be a background source. The excess emission can be explained by a dust clump accumulated in a small elongated vortex or a massive circumplanetary disk around a Neptune mass forming-planet., Comment: 9pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present the results of mapping observations toward an outflow-shocked region, OMC-2 FIR 4, using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. We observed the area in 13CO (J = 1–0), C18O (J = 1–0), N2H+ (J = 1–0), CCS (JN = 87–76), HCO+ (J = 1–0), H13CO+ (J = 1–0), HN13C (J = 1–0), H13CN (J = 1–0), DNC (J = 1–0), N2D+ (J = 1–0), and DC3N (J = 9–8). We detected a dense molecular clump that contains FIR 4/5. We also detected, in the 13CO line, blueshifted and redshifted components driven presumably by protostellar outflows in this region. The axes of the FIR 3 and VLA 13 outflows, projected on the plane of the sky, appear to point to the FIR 4 clump, suggesting that it may be compressed by protostellar outflows from Class I sources, FIR 3 and VLA 13. Applying a hyperfine fit of N2H+ lines, we estimated the excitation temperature to be ∼20 K. The high excitation temperature is consistent with the fact that the clump contains protostars. CCS emission was detected in this region for the first time. Its abundance is estimated to be a few × 10−12, indicating that the region is chemically evolved at ∼105 yr, which is comparable to the typical lifetime of Class I protostars. This timescale is consistent with the scenario that star formation in FIR 4 is triggered by dynamical compression of the protostellar outflows. The [HNC]/[HCN] ratio was evaluated to be ∼0.5 in the dense clump and the outflow lobes, whereas it is somewhat larger in the envelope of the dense clump. The small [HNC]/[HCN] ratio indicates that HNC formation was prevented due to high temperatures. Such high temperatures seem to be consistent with the scenario that either protostellar radiation, or outflow compression, or both affected the thermal properties of this region.

We present far-infrared (FIR) properties of an extremely luminous infrared galaxy (ELIRG) at $z_{\rm spec}$ = 3.703, WISE J101326.25+611220.1 (WISE1013+6112). This ELIRG is selected as an IR-bright dust-obscured galaxy (DOG) based on the photometry from the Sloan digital sky survey (SDSS) and wide-field infrared survey explorer (WISE). In order to derive its accurate IR luminosity, we perform follow-up observations at 89 and 154 $\mu$m using the high-resolution airborne wideband camera-plus (HAWC+) on board the 2.7-m stratospheric observatory for infrared astronomy (SOFIA) telescope. We conduct spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with CIGALE using 15 photometric data (0.4-1300 $\mu$m). We successfully pin down FIR SED of WISE1013+6112 and its IR luminosity is estimated to be $L_{\rm IR}$ = (1.62 $\pm$ 0.08) $\times 10^{14}$ $L_{\odot}$, making it one of the most luminous IR galaxies in the universe. We determine the dust temperature of WISE1013+6112 is $T_{\rm dust}$ = 89 $\pm$ 3 K, which is significantly higher than that of other populations such as SMGs and FIR-selected galaxies at similar IR luminosities. The resultant dust mass is $M_{\rm dust}$ = (2.2 $\pm$ 0.1) $\times 10^{8}$ $M_{\odot}$. This indicates that WISE1013+6112 has a significant active galactic nucleus (AGN) and star-forming activity behind a large amount of dust., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, and 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Analyzing multiband observations of dust continuum emission is one of the useful tools to constrain dust properties which help us to understand the physical properties of the disks. We perform the synthetic ALMA multiband analysis to find the best ALMA band set for constraining the dust properties of the TW Hya protoplanetary disk. We find that the Band [10,6,3] set is the best set among the possible combinations of ALMA Band [3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10]. We also find two conditions for the good ALMA band sets providing narrow constraint ranges on dust properties; (1) Band 9 or 10 is included in the band set and (2) Enough frequency intervals between the bands. These are related with the conditions which give good constraints on dust properties: the combination of optically thick and thin bands are required, and large beta (beta is the power-law index of dust opacity), and low dust temperature are preferable. To examine our synthetic analysis results, we apply the multiband analysis to ALMA archival data of the TW Hya disk at Band 4, 6, 7, and 9. Band [9,6,4] set provides the dust properties close to the model profile, while Band [7,6,4] set gives the dust properties deviating from the model at all radii with too broad constraint range to specify the accurate values of dust temperature, optical depth, and \b{eta}. Since these features are expected by the synthetic multiband analysis, we confirm that the synthetic multiband analysis is well consistent with the results derived from real data., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present a study of the gas kinematics of star-forming galaxies associated with protocluster 4C 23.56 at $z=2.49$ using $0''.4$ resolution CO (4-3) data taken with ALMA. Eleven H$\alpha$ emitters (HAEs) are detected in CO (4-3), including six HAEs that were previously detected in CO (3-2) at a coarser angular resolution. The detections in both CO lines are broadly consistent in the line widths and the redshifts, confirming both detections. With an increase in the number of spectroscopic redshifts, we confirm that the protocluster is composed of two merging groups with a total halo mass of $\log{(M_{\rm cl}/M_{\odot})} =13.4-13.6$, suggesting that the protocluster would evolve into a Virgo-like cluster ($>10^{14} M_{\odot}$). We compare the CO line widths and the CO luminosities with galaxies in other (proto)clusters ($n_{\rm gal}=91$) and general fields ($n_{\rm gal}=80$) from other studies. The 4C23.56 protocluster galaxies have CO line widths and luminosities comparable to other protocluster galaxies on average. On the other hand, the CO line widths are on average broader by $\approx50\%$ compared to field galaxies, while the median CO luminosities are similar. The broader line widths can be attributed to both effects of unresolved gas-rich mergers and/or compact gas distribution, which is supported by our limited but decent angular resolution observations and the size estimate of three galaxies. Based on these results, we argue that gas-rich mergers may play a role in the retention of the specific angular momentum to a value similar to that of field populations during cluster assembly, though we need to verify this with a larger number of samples., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, ApJ in press

We conducted an exploration of ${}^{12}$CO molecular outflows in the Orion A giant molecular cloud to investigate outflow feedback using ${}^{12}$CO ($J = 1\!-\!0$) and ${}^{13}$CO ($J = 1\!-\!0$) data obtained by the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. In the region excluding the center of OMC 1, we identified 44 ${}^{12}$CO (including 17 newly detected) outflows based on the unbiased and systematic procedure of automatically determining the velocity range of the outflows and separating the cloud and outflow components. The optical depth of the ${}^{12}$CO emission in the detected outflows is estimated to be approximately 5. The total momentum and energy of the outflows, corrected for optical depth, are estimated to be $1.6 \times 10^{2}\, M_{\odot }\:$km$\:$s$^{-1}$ and $1.5\times 10^{46}\:$erg, respectively. The momentum and energy ejection rate of the outflows are estimated to be 36% and 235% of the momentum and energy dissipation rates of the cloud turbulence, respectively. Furthermore, the ejection rates of the outflows are comparable to those of the expanding molecular shells estimated by Feddersen et al. (2018, ApJ, 862, 121). Cloud turbulence cannot be sustained by the outflows and shells unless the energy conversion efficiency is as high as 20%.

We revisit the cold gas contents of galaxies in a protocluster at z=2.49 using the lowest neutral atomic carbon transition [CI]$^3$P$_1$-$^3$P$_0$ from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations. We aim to test if the same gas mass calibration applied in field galaxies can be applied to protocluster galaxies. Five galaxies out of sixteen targeted galaxies are detected in the [CI] line, and these are all previously detected in CO(3-2) and CO(4-3) and three in 1.1 mm dust continuum. We investigate the line luminosity relations between CO and [CI] in the protocluster and compare them with other previous studies. We then compare the gas mass based on three gas tracers of [CI], CO(3-2), and dust if at least one of the last two tracers are available. Using the calibration adopted for field main-sequence galaxies, the [CI]-based gas measurements are lower than or comparable to the CO-based gas measurements by -0.35 dex at the lowest with the mean deviation of -0.14 dex. The differences between [CI]- and the dust- based measurements are relatively mild by up to 0.16 dex with the mean difference of 0.02 dex. Taking these all together with calibration uncertainties, with the [CI] line, we reconfirm our previous findings that the mean gas fraction is comparable to field galaxies for a stellar-mass range of $\log(M_{\rm star}/M_\odot = [10.6, 11.3]$. However, at least for these secure five detections, the depletion time scale decreases more rapidly with stellar mass than field galaxies that might be related to earlier quenching in dense environments., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

With this research note, we are releasing the CARMA-NRO Orion Survey data first presented in Kong et al., enhanced with additional coverage of the L1641-C region to the south of the integral-shaped filament. We are including position–position–velocity cubes for the molecular lines 12CO(1–0), 13CO(1–0), and C18O(1–0). The original paper includes details of the data reduction and final sensitivity. The mapped region now spans about 2.°5 along the Orion A cloud in the north–south direction, providing an unprecedented overview of the extended molecular gas. The associated data cubes are publicly available on the Harvard Dataverse 10.7910/DVN/6Q26PN (Version 3). Kong et al. and this research note should be cited when using these data.

A planet is formed within a protoplanetary disk. Recent observations have revealed substructures such as gaps and rings, which may indicate forming planets within the disk. Due to disk--planet interaction, the planet migrates within the disk, which can affect a shape of the planet-induced gap. In this paper, we investigate effects of fast inward migration of the planet on the gap shape, by carrying out hydrodynamic simulations. We found that when the migration timescale is shorter than the timescale of the gap-opening, the orbital radius is shifted inward as compared to the radial location of the gap. We also found a scaling relation between the radial shift of the locations of the planet and the gap as a function of the ratio of the timescale of the migration and gap-opening. Our scaling relation also enables us to constrain the gas surface density and the viscosity when the gap and the planet are observed. Moreover, we also found the scaling relation between the location of the secondary gap and the aspect ratio. By combining the radial shift and the secondary gap, we may constrain the physical condition of the planet formation and how the planet evolves in the protoplanetary disk, from the observational morphology., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Mergers of galaxies are an important mode for galaxy evolution because they serve as an efficient trigger of powerful starbursts. However, observational studies of molecular gas properties during their early stages are scarce. We present interferometric CO(2-1) maps of two luminous infrared galaxies, NGC 3110 and NGC 232, obtained with the Submillimeter Array with ∼1 kpc resolution. While NGC 3110 is a spiral galaxy interacting with a minor (14:1 stellar mass) companion, NGC 232 is interacting with a similarly sized object. We find that such interactions in these galaxies have likely induced enhancements in the molecular gas content and central concentrations, partly at the expense of atomic gas. The obtained molecular gas surface densities in their circumnuclear regions are Σ10 M pc, higher than in noninteracting objects by an order of magnitude. Gas depletion times of 0.5-1 Gyr are found for the different regions, lying in between noninteracting disk galaxies and the starburst sequence. In the case of NGC 3110, the spiral arms show on average 0.5 dex shorter depletion times than in the circumnuclear regions if we assume a similar H-CO conversion factor. We show that even in the early stages of the interaction with a minor companion, a starburst is formed along the circumnuclear region and spiral arms, where a large population of SSCs is found (∼350), and at the same time a large central gas concentration is building up that might be the fuel for an active galactic nucleus. The main morphological properties of the NGC 3110 system are reproduced by our numerical simulations and allow us to estimate that the current epoch of the interaction is at ∼150 Myr after closest approach.© 2018. We present the survey design, data reduction, construction of images, and source catalog of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) twenty-six arcmin^2 survey of GOODS-S at one-millimeter (ASAGAO). ASAGAO is a deep (1sigma ~ 61 uJy/beam for a 250 klambda-tapered map with a synthesized beam size of 0.51" x 0.45") and wide area (26 arcmin^2) survey on a contiguous field at 1.2 mm. By combining with ALMA archival data in the GOODS-South field, we obtained a deeper map in the same region (1sigma ~ 30 uJy/beam for a deep region with a 250 klambda-taper, and a synthesized beam size of 0.59" x 0.53"), providing the largest sample of sources (25 sources at >=5.0sigma, 45 sources at >=4.5sigma) among ALMA blank-field surveys to date. The number counts shows that 52(+11 -8)% of the extragalactic background light at 1.2 mm is resolved into discrete sources at S1.2m > 135 uJy. We create infrared (IR) luminosity functions (LFs) in the redshift range of z = 1-3 from the ASAGAO sources with KS-band counterparts, and constrain the faintest luminosity of the LF at 2.0 < z < 3.0. The LFs are consistent with previous results based on other ALMA and SCUBA-2 observations, which suggest a positive luminosity evolution and negative density evolution with increasing redshift. We find that obscured star-formation of sources with IR luminosities of log(L(IR)/Lsun)} ~> 11.8 account for ~~60%-90% of the z ~ 2 cosmic star-formation rate density., 19 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

An ultra-wideband, large field-of-view (sub)millimeter wave imaging spectrometer is imperative for uncovering the evolution of dust-enshrouded cosmic star formation rate, galaxy evolution, and structure formation, over cosmic time. Here we report the first on-sky demonstration of DESHIMA. DESHIMA (Deep Spectroscopic High-redshift Mapper) is a new type of submillimeter wave spectrometer, which uses a superconducting filterbank on a chip to achieve a very wide instantaneous bandwidth. Compared to an optical spectrometer with equivalent performance, such an on-chip spectrometer is not only compact, but also offers a higher degree of potential scalability to multiple spatial pixels. On the filterbank spectrometer chip of DESHIMA, the signal captured by the lens-antenna travels through a coplanar waveguide made of superconducting NbTiN, from which planar NbTiN bandpass filters branch out to divide the signal into frequency channels. At the output of each filter is a NbTiN/Al hybrid kinetic inductance detector (KID). These KIDs are operated at 120 mK with a 2-stage adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (ADR), and their response is read out using the SpaceKIDs readout electronics. Being in its phase-1 configuration, DESHIMA currently covers the 330-370 GHz band with 49 spectral channels, offering a spectral resolution F/dF = 400, or dV = 700 km/s. This design is intended as a scalable prototype towards the phase-2 DESHIMA instrument, which targets at 240-720 GHz instantaneous band coverage with a resolution of F/dF = 500 (dV = 600 km/s), and >2 spatial pixels. In the laboratory, the sensitivity and frequency response of DESHIMA was characterized using a black-body calibration source and a THz photo-mixer source, respectively. The sensitivity is photon-noise limited at a detector loading power of ~1 pW, with a photon-noise limited optical Noise Equivalent Power of 1-2 x 10^-16 W Hz^-0.5. From October to November 2017, DESHIMA was installed on the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE), a 10 m diameter antenna in the Atacama Desert of Chile. The sensitivity of DESHIMA measured inside the ASTE cabin is similar to lab results. At the time of submission of the abstract, DESHIMA has successfully detected multiple astronomical sources, in both continuum and line emission. At the conference we will report the lessons learned in the first actual operation of an on-chip filterbank spectrometer on a telescope, including the influence of thermal cycles on the filters, system susceptibility to telescope environment and motion, on-sky beam pattern, and sensitivity to continuum and line emission.

We present the first results from a new, high resolution, $^{12}$CO(1-0), $^{13}$CO(1-0), and C$^{18}$O(1-0) molecular line survey of the Orion A cloud, hereafter referred to as the CARMA-NRO Orion Survey. CARMA observations have been combined with single-dish data from the Nobeyama 45m telescope to provide extended images at about 0.01 pc resolution, with a dynamic range of approximately 1200 in spatial scale. Here we describe the practical details of the data combination in uv space, including flux scale matching, the conversion of single dish data to visibilities, and joint deconvolution of single dish and interferometric data. A $\Delta$-variance analysis indicates that no artifacts are caused by combining data from the two instruments. Initial analysis of the data cubes, including moment maps, average spectra, channel maps, position-velocity diagrams, excitation temperature, column density, and line ratio maps provides evidence of complex and interesting structures such as filaments, bipolar outflows, shells, bubbles, and photo-eroded pillars. The implications for star formation processes are profound and follow-up scientific studies by the CARMA-NRO Orion team are now underway. We present the discovery of an extremely-luminous dust-obscured galaxy (DOG) at $z_{\rm spec}$ = 3.703, WISE J101326.25+611220.1. This DOG is selected as a candidate of extremely-luminous infrared (IR) galaxies based on the photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. In order to derive its accurate IR luminosity, we perform follow-up observations at 450 and 850 $\mu$m using the Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array 2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, and at 870 and 1300 $\mu$m using the Submillimeter Array, which enable us to pin down its IR Spectral Energy Distribution (SED). We perform SED fitting using 14 photometric data (0.4 - 1300 $\mu$m) and estimate its IR luminosity, $L_{\rm IR}$ (8-1000 $\mu$m), to be $2.2^{+1.5}_{-1.0}$ $\times 10^{14}$ $L_{\odot}$, making it one of the most luminous IR galaxies in the Universe. The energy contribution from an active galactic nucleus (AGN) to the IR luminosity is $94^{+6}_{-20}$%, which indicates it is an AGN-dominated DOG. On the other hand, its stellar mass ($M_*$) and star formation rate (SFR) are $\log \,(M_\ast/M_{\odot})$ = $11.2^{+0.6}_{-0.2}$ and $\log \,({\rm SFR}/M_{\odot}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$) = $3.1^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$, respectively, which means that this DOG can be considered as a starburst galaxy in $M_*$--SFR plane. We present 0".97 $\times$ 0".53 (470 pc $\times$ 250 pc) resolution CO ($J$ = 2-1) observations toward the nearby luminous merging galaxy NGC 6240 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We confirmed a strong CO concentration within the central 700 pc, which peaks between the double nuclei, surrounded by extended CO features along the optical dust lanes ($\sim$11 kpc). We found that the CO emission around the central a few kpc has extremely broad velocity wings with full width at zero intensity $\sim$ 2000 km s$^{-1}$, suggesting a possible signature of molecular outflow(s). In order to extract and visualize the high-velocity components in NGC 6240, we performed a multiple Gaussian fit to the CO datacube. The distribution of the broad CO components show four extremely large linewidth regions ($\sim$1000 km s$^{-1}$) located 1-2 kpc away from both nuclei. Spatial coincidence of the large linewidth regions with H$\alpha$, near-IR H$_2$, and X-ray suggests that the broad CO (2-1) components are associated with nuclear outflows launched from the double nuclei., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Letter

We present observations at 1.1 mm towards 16 powerful radio galaxies and a radio-quiet quasar at 0.5 > z > 6.3 acquired with the AzTEC camera mounted at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment to study the spatial distribution of submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) towards possible protocluster regions. The survey covers a total area of 1.01 sq deg with rms depths of 0.52-1.44 mJy and detects 728 sources above 3σ. We find overdensities of a factor of ~2 in the source counts of three individual fields (4C+23.56, PKS1138-262, and MRC0355-037) over areas of ~200 sq deg. When combining all fields, the source-count analysis finds an overdensity that reaches a factor ≳ 3 at S1.1mm = 4mJy covering a 1.5-arcmin-radius area centred on the active galactic nucleus. The large size of our maps allows us to establish that beyond a radius of 1.5 arcmin, the radial surface density of SMGs falls to that of a blank field. In addition, we find a trend for SMGs to align closely to a perpendicular direction with respect to the radio jets of the powerful central radio galaxies (73-14 +13 deg). This misalignment is found over projected comoving scales of 4-20 Mpc, departs from perfect alignment (0 deg) by ~5σ, and apparently has no dependence on SMG luminosity. Under the assumption that the AzTEC sources are at the redshift of the central radio galaxy, the misalignment reported here can be interpreted as SMGs preferentially inhabiting mass-dominant filaments funnelling material towards the protoclusters, which are also the parent structures of the radio galaxies.

On the basis of various data such as ALMA, JVLA, Chandra, {\it Herschel}, and {\it Spitzer}, we confirmed that two protostellar candidates in Oph-A are bona fide protostars or proto-brown dwarfs (proto-BDs) in extremely early evolutionary stages. Both objects are barely visible across infrared (IR, i.e., near-IR to far-IR) bands. The physical nature of the cores is very similar to that expected in first hydrostatic cores (FHSCs), objects theoretically predicted in the evolutionary phase prior to stellar core formation with gas densities of $\sim$ 10$^{11-12}$ cm$^{-3}$. This suggests that the evolutionary stage is close to the FHSC formation phase. The two objects are associated with faint X-ray sources, suggesting that they are in very early phase of stellar core formation with magnetic activity. In addition, we found the CO outflow components around both sources which may originate from the young outflows driven by these sources. The masses of these objects are calculated to be $\sim 0.01-0.03$ $M_\odot$ from the dust continuum emission. Their physical properties are consistent with that expected from the numerical model of forming brown dwarfs. These facts (the X-ray detection, CO outflow association, and FHSC-like spectral energy distributions) strongly indicate that the two objects are proto-BDs or will be in the very early phase of protostars which will evolve more massive protostars if they gain enough mass from the surroundings. The ages of these two objects are likely to be within $\sim 10^3$ years after the protostellar core (or second core) formation, taking into account the outflow dynamical times ($\lesssim$ 500 yrs)., Comment: 10 figures, 5 tables, 23 pages, accepted by ApJ

We present results of the $^{12}$CO (1--0) mosaic observations of the nearby barred-spiral galaxy M83 obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The total flux is recovered by combining the ALMA data with single-dish data obtained using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. The combined map covers a $\sim$13 kpc$^{2}$ field that includes the galactic center, eastern bar, and spiral arm with a resolution of \timeform{2''.03} $\times$ \timeform{1''.1} ($\sim$45 pc $\times$ $\sim$25 pc). With a resolution comparable to typical sizes of giant molecular clouds (GMCs), the CO distribution in the bar and arm is resolved into many clumpy peaks that form ridge-like structures. Remarkably, in the eastern arm, the CO peaks form two arc-shaped ridges that run along the arm and exhibit a distinct difference in the activity of star formation: the one on the leading side has numerous HII regions associated with it, whereas the other one on the trailing side has only a few. To see whether GMCs form stars with uniform star formation efficiency (SFE) per free-fall time (SFEff), GMCs are identified from the data cube and then cross-matched with the catalog of HII regions to estimate the star formation rate for each of them. 179 GMCs with a median mass of 1.6 $\times$ 10$^{6}$ $M_{\odot}$ are identified. The mass-weighted average SFEff of the GMCs is $\sim$9.4 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$, which is in agreement with models of turbulence regulated star formation. Meanwhile, we find that SFEff is not universal within the mapped region. In particular, one of the arm ridges shows a high SFEff with a mass-weighted value of $\sim$2.7 $\times$ 10$^{-2}$, which is higher by more than a factor of 5 compared to the inter-arm regions.
