Abstract

Enhanced magnetism has recently been reported for the topological-insulator/ferromagnet interface Bi$_2$Se$_3$/EuS with Curie temperatures claimed to be raised above room temperature from the bulk EuS value of 16 K. Here we investigate the analogous interface Bi$_2$Se$_3$/EuSe. EuSe is a low-temperature layered ferrimagnet that is particularly sensitive to external perturbations. We find that superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry of Bi$_2$Se$_3$/EuSe heterostructures reveals precisely the magnetic phase diagram known from EuSe, including the ferrimagnetic phase below 5 K, without any apparent changes from the bulk behavior. Choosing a temperature of 10 K to search for magnetic enhancement, we determine an upper limit for a possible magnetic coercive field of 3 mT. Using interface sensitive x-ray absorption spectroscopy we verify the magnetic divalent configuration of the Eu at the interface without contamination by Eu3+, and by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) we confirm at the interface the magnetic hysteresis obtained by SQUID. XMCD data obtained at 10 K in a magnetic field of 6 T indicate a magnetic spin moment of mz,spin = 7 $\mu$B/Eu$^{2+}$, in good agreement with the SQUID data and the expected theoretical moment of Eu2+. Subsequent XMCD measurements in zero field show, however, that sizable remanent magnetization is absent at the interface for temperatures down to about 10 K., Comment: 11 figures, 35 references

Abstract

Mn$_2$Au is an important antiferromagnetic (AF) material for spintronics applications. Due to its very high N\'eel temperature of about 1500 K, some of the basic properties are difficult to explore, such as the AF susceptibility and the exchange constants. Experimental determination of these properties is further complicated in thin films by unavoidable presence of uncompensated and quasiloose spins on antisites and at interfaces. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we have measured the spin and orbital contribution to the susceptibility in the direction perpendicular to the in-plane magnetic moments of a Mn$_2$Au(001) film and in fields up to 8 T. By performing these measurements at a low temperature of 7 K and at room temperature, we were able to separate the loose spin contribution from the susceptibility of AF coupled spins. The value of the AF exchange constant obtained with this method for a 10 nm thick Mn$_2$Au(001) film equals to (24 $\pm$ 5) meV.

Abstract

We determine the phase diagram of copper nitrate Cu(NO$_3$)$_2\cdot$2.5D$_2$O in the context of quantum phase transitions and novel states of matter. We establish this compound as an ideal candidate to study quasi-1D Luttinger liquids, 3D Bose-Einstein-Condensation of triplons, and the crossover between 1D and 3D physics. Magnetocaloric effect, magnetization, and neutron scattering data provide clear evidence for transitions into a Luttinger liquid regime and a 3D long-range ordered phase as function of field and temperature. Theoretical simulations of this model material allow us to fully establish the phase diagram and to discuss it in the context of dimerized spin systems., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Magnetic insulators have proven to be usable as quantum simulators for itinerant interacting quantum systems. In particular the compound (C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ (short (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$) was shown to be a remarkable realization of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) and allowed to quantitatively test the TLL theory. Substitution weakly disorders this class of compounds and allows thus to use them to tackle questions pertaining to the effect of disorder in TLL as well, such as the formation of the Bose glass. As a first step in this direction we present in this paper a study of the properties of the related (Hpip)$_{2}$CuCl$_{4}$ compound. We determine the exchange couplings and compute the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the specific heat, using a finite temperature Density Matrix Renormalization group (DMRG) procedure. Comparison with the measured specific heat at zero magnetic field confirms the exchange parameters and Hamiltonian for the (Hpip)$_{2}$CuCl$_{4}$ compound, giving the basis needed to start studying the disorder effects., Comment: Part of the special issue "Physics in one dimension", A van Houselt, J Sch\"afer, H J W Zandvliet and R Claessen ed

Abstract

We present a comprehensive macroscopic thermodynamic study of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) $s = \tfrac{1}{2}$ frustrated spin-chain system linarite. Susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, and thermal-expansion measurements were performed to characterize the magnetic phase diagram. In particular, for magnetic fields along the b axis five different magnetic regions have been detected, some of them exhibiting short-range-order effects. The experimental magnetic entropy and magnetization are compared to a theoretical modelling of these quantities using DMRG and TMRG approaches. Within the framework of a purely 1D isotropic model Hamiltonian, only a qualitative agreement between theory and the experimental data can be achieved. Instead, it is demonstrated that a significant symmetric anisotropic exchange of about 10% is necessary to account for the basic experimental observations, including the 3D saturation field, and which in turn might stabilize a triatic (three-magnon) multipolar phase., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

The complex interplay between the 3d and 4f moments in hexagonal ErMnO3 is investigated by magnetization, optical second harmonic generation, and neutron-diffraction measurements. We revise the phase diagram and provide a microscopic model for the emergent spin structures with a special focus on the intermediary phase transitions. Our measurements reveal that the 3d exchange between Mn^{3+} ions dominates the magnetic symmetry at 10 K < T < T_N with Mn^3+ order according to the Gamma_4 representation triggering 4f ordering according to the same representation on the Er^{3+}(4b) site. Below 10 K the magnetic order is governed by 4f exchange interactions of Er^{3+} ions on the 2a site. The magnetic Er^{3+}(2a) order according to the representation Gamma_2 induces a magnetic reorientation (Gamma_4 --> Gamma_2) at the Er^{3+}(4b) and the Mn^{3+} sites. Our findings highlight the fundamentally different roles the Mn^{3+}, R^{3+}(2a), and R^{3+}(4b) magnetism play in establishing the magnetic phase diagram of the hexagonal RMnO3 system.

Abstract

We report on a search for gravitational waves from coalescing compact binaries using LIGO and Virgo observations between July 7, 2009 and October 20, 2010. We searched for signals from binaries with total mass between 2 and 25 solar masses; this includes binary neutron stars, binary black holes, and binaries consisting of a black hole and neutron star. The detectors were sensitive to systems up to 40 Mpc distant for binary neutron stars, and further for higher mass systems. No gravitational-wave signals were detected. We report upper limits on the rate of compact binary coalescence as a function of total mass, including the results from previous LIGO and Virgo observations. The cumulative 90%-confidence rate upper limits of the binary coalescence of binary neutron star, neutron star- black hole and binary black hole systems are 1.3 x 10^{-4}, 3.1 x 10^{-5} and 6.4 x 10^{-6} Mpc^{-3}yr^{-1}, respectively. Abstract

We report on an all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency band 50-800 Hz and with the frequency time derivative in the range of 0 through -6e-9 Hz/s. Such a signal could be produced by a nearby spinning and slightly non-axisymmetric isolated neutron star in our galaxy. After recent improvements in the search program that yielded a 10x increase in computational efficiency, we have searched in two years of data collected during LIGO's fifth science run and have obtained the most sensitive all-sky upper limits on gravitational wave strain to date. Near 150 Hz our upper limit on worst-case linearly polarized strain amplitude $h_0$ is 1e-24, while at the high end of our frequency range we achieve a worst-case upper limit of 3.8e-24 for all polarizations and sky locations. These results constitute a factor of two improvement upon previously published data. A new detection pipeline utilizing a Loosely Coherent algorithm was able to follow up weaker outliers, increasing the volume of space where signals can be detected by a factor of 10, but has not revealed any gravitational wave signals. The pipeline has been tested for robustness with respect to deviations from the model of an isolated neutron star, such as caused by a low-mass or long-period binary companion., Comment: 18 pages

Abstract

Aims. A transient astrophysical event observed in both gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) channels would yield rich scientific rewards. A first program initiating EM follow-ups to possible transient GW events has been developed and exercised by the LIGO and Virgo community in association with several partners. In this paper, we describe and evaluate the methods used to promptly identify and localize GW event candidates and to request images of targeted sky locations. Methods. During two observing periods (Dec 17 2009 to Jan 8 2010 and Sep 2 to Oct 20 2010), a low-latency analysis pipeline was used to identify GW event candidates and to reconstruct maps of possible sky locations. A catalog of nearby galaxies and Milky Way globular clusters was used to select the most promising sky positions to be imaged, and this directional information was delivered to EM observatories with time lags of about thirty minutes. A Monte Carlo simulation has been used to evaluate the low-latency GW pipeline's ability to reconstruct source positions correctly. Results. For signals near the detection threshold, our low-latency algorithms often localized simulated GW burst signals to tens of square degrees, while neutron star/neutron star inspirals and neutron star/black hole inspirals were localized to a few hundred square degrees. Localization precision improves for moderately stronger signals. The correct sky location of signals well above threshold and originating from nearby galaxies may be observed with ~50% or better probability with a few pointings of wide-field telescopes., Comment: 17 pages. Abstract

{\alpha}-CaCr2O4 is a distorted triangular antiferromagnet. The magnetic Cr3+ ions which have spin-3/2 and interact with their nearest neighbors via Heisenberg direct exchange interactions, develop long-range magnetic order below T_N=42.6 K. Powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction reveal a helical magnetic structure with ordering wavevector k=(0,~1/3,0) and angles close to 120{\deg} between neighboring spins. Spherical neutron polarimetry unambiguously proves that the spins lie in the ac plane perpendicular to k. The magnetic structure is therefore that expected for an ideal triangular antiferromagnet where all nearest neighbor interactions are equal, in spite of the fact that {\alpha}-CaCr2O4 is distorted with two inequivalent Cr3+ ions and four different nearest neighbor interactions. By simulating the magnetic order as a function of these four interactions it is found that the special pattern of interactions in {\alpha}-CaCr2O4 stabilizes 120{\deg} helical order for a large range of exchange interactions., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

We have measured angular-dependent fluorescence-yield x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra on single crystals of the heterometallic 3d-4f 12-metallacrown-4 TbMn4 and DyMn4 complexes. Simulated spectra using crystal-field multiplet calculations reproduce the experimentally observed spectra. The orientation of the molecules causes linear dichroism spectra of the 4f absorption spectra. This natural linear dichroism shows the anisotropic charge distribution of the rare-earth 4f state in the tetragonal crystal field despite the small 4f crystal-field splitting. The magnetic moment of the molecule is dominated by the rare-earth moment revealing a considerably large contribution of orbital moment. From a sum-rule analysis of experimental and simulated x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we determined corrected spin and orbital Dy moments at low temperature (14 K) within a magnetic field of 7 T. We find a significant angular dependence of the Dy magnetic moments, indicating the presence of fourth-order magnetic anisotropy.

Abstract

We present new experimental low-temperature heat capacity and detailed dynamical spin-structure factor data for the quantum spin liquid candidate material Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$. The measured heat capacity shows an almost perfect linear temperature dependence in the range $0.1$ K $\lesssim T\lesssim0.5$ K, reminiscent of fermionic spinon degrees of freedom. The spin structure factor exhibits two energy regimes of strong signal which display rather different but solely diffuse scattering features. We theoretically describe these findings by an effective spinon hopping model which crucially relies on the existence of strong ferromagnetically coupled triangles in the system. Our spinon theory is shown to naturally reproduce the overall weight distribution of the measured spin structure factor. Particularly, we argue that various different observed characteristic properties of the spin structure factor and the heat capacity consistently indicate the existence of a spinon Fermi surface. A closer analysis of the heat capacity at the lowest accessible temperatures hints towards the presence of weak $f$-wave spinon pairing terms inducing a small partial gap along the Fermi surface (except for discrete nodal Dirac points) and suggesting an overall $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquid scenario for Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$., 14 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

[EN] The electronic reconstruction occurring at oxide interfaces may be the source of interesting device concepts for future oxide electronics. Among oxide devices, multiferroic tunnel junctions are being actively investigated as they offer the possibility to modulate the junction current by independently controlling the switching of the magnetization of the electrodes and of the ferroelectric polarization of the barrier. In this Letter, we show that the spin reconstruction at the interfaces of a La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/BaTiO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 multiferroic tunnel junction is the origin of a spin filtering functionality that can be turned on and off by reversing the ferroelectric polarization. The ferroelectrically controlled interface spin filter enables a giant electrical modulation of the tunneling magnetoresistance between values of 10% and 1000%, which could inspire device concepts in oxides-based low dissipation spintronics.

Abstract

A spin liquid is a new state of matter with topological order where the spin moments continue to fluctuate coherently down to the lowest temperatures rather than develop static long range magnetic order as found in conventional magnets. For spin liquid behavior to arise in a material the magnetic Hamiltonian must be frustrated , where the combination of lattice geometry, interactions, and anisotropies gives rise to competing spin arrangements in the ground state. Theoretical Hamiltonians which produce spin liquids are spin ice, the Kitaev honeycomb model, and the kagome antiferromagnet. Spin liquid behavior, however, in real materials is rare because they can only approximate these Hamiltonians and often have weak higher order terms that destroy the spin liquid state. Ca10Cr7O28 is a new quantum spin liquid candidate with magnetic Cr5 ions that possess quantum spin number S . The spins are entirely dynamic in the ground state and the excitation spectrum is broad and diffuse, as is typical of spinons which are the excitations of a spin liquid. In this paper we determine the Hamiltonian of Ca10Cr7O28 using inelastic neutron scattering under high magnetic field to induce a field polarized paramagnetic ground state and spin wave excitations that can be fitted to extract the interactions. We further explore the phase diagram by using inelastic neutron scattering and heat capacity measurements and establish the boundaries of the spin liquid phase as a function of magnetic field and temperature. Our results show that Ca10Cr7O28 consists of distorted kagome bilayers with several isotropic ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions where, unexpectedly, the ferromagnetic interactions are stronger than the antiferromagnetic ones. This complex Hamiltonian does not correspond to any known spin liquid model and points to new directions in the search for quantum spin liquid behavior

Abstract

Magnetic insulators have proven to be usable as quantum simulators for itinerant interacting quantum systems. In particular the compound (C5H12N)2CuBr4 (for short: (Hpip)2CuBr4) was shown to be a remarkable realization of a Tomonaga–Luttinger liquid (TLL) and allowed us to quantitatively test the TLL theory. Substitution weakly disorders this class of compounds and thus allows us to use them to tackle questions pertaining to the effect of disorder in TLL as well such as that of the formation of the Bose glass. In this paper we present as a first step in this direction a study of the properties of the related (Hpip)2CuCl4 compound. We determine the exchange couplings and compute the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the specific heat using a finite temperature density matrix renormalization group procedure. Comparison with the measured specific heat at zero magnetic field confirms the exchange parameters and Hamiltonian for the (Hpip)2CuCl4 compound giving the basis needed to begin studying the disorder effects.

Abstract

Unlike conventional magnets where the magnetic moments are partially or completely static in the ground state, in a quantum spin liquid they remain in collective motion down to the lowest temperatures. The importance of this state is that it is coherent and highly entangled without breaking local symmetries. In the case of magnets with isotropic interactions, spin-liquid behaviour is sought in simple lattices with antiferromagnetic interactions that favour antiparallel alignments of the magnetic moments and are incompatible with the lattice geometries. Despite an extensive search, experimental realizations remain very few. Here we investigate the novel, unexplored magnet Ca10Cr7O28, which has a complex Hamiltonian consisting of several different isotropic interactions and where the ferromagnetic couplings are stronger than the antiferromagnetic ones. We show both experimentally and theoretically that it displays all the features expected of a quantum spin liquid. Thus spin-liquid behaviour in isotropic magnets is not restricted to the simple idealized models currently investigated, but can be compatible with complex structures and ferromagnetic interactions.

Abstract

We demonstrate the ability to record a tomographic tilt series containing 3487 images in only 3.5 s by using a direct electron detector in a transmission electron microscope. The electron dose is lower by at least one order of magnitude when compared with that used to record a conventional tilt series of fewer than 100 images in 15–60 minutes and the overall signal-to-noise ratio is greater than 4. Our results, which are illustrated for an inorganic nanotube, are important for ultra-low-dose electron tomography of electron-beam-sensitive specimens and real-time dynamic electron tomography of nanoscale objects with sub-ms temporal resolution.

Abstract

We present a comprehensive macroscopic thermodynamic study of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) $s = \tfrac{1}{2}$ frustrated spin-chain system linarite. Susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, and thermal-expansion measurements were performed to characterize the magnetic phase diagram. In particular, for magnetic fields along the b axis five different magnetic regions have been detected, some of them exhibiting short-range-order effects. The experimental magnetic entropy and magnetization are compared to a theoretical modelling of these quantities using DMRG and TMRG approaches. Within the framework of a purely 1D isotropic model Hamiltonian, only a qualitative agreement between theory and the experimental data can be achieved. Instead, it is demonstrated that a significant symmetric anisotropic exchange of about 10% is necessary to account for the basic experimental observations, including the 3D saturation field, and which in turn might stabilize a triatic (three-magnon) multipolar phase., 20 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

We summarize the sensitivity achieved by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors for low-mass compact binary coalescence (CBC) searches during LIGO's sixth science run and Virgo's second and third science runs. We present strain noise power spectral densities (PSDs) which are representative of the typical performance achieved by the detectors in these science runs. The data presented here and in the accompanying web-accessible data files are intended to be released to the public as a summary of detector performance for low-mass CBC searches during S6 and VSR2-3.

Abstract

15 pages; Aims. A transient astrophysical event observed in both gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) channels would yield rich scientific rewards. A first program initiating EM follow-ups to possible transient GW events has been developed and exercised by the LIGO and Virgo community in association with several partners. In this paper, we describe and evaluate the methods used to promptly identify and localize GW event candidates and to request images of targeted sky locations. Methods. During two observing periods (Dec 17 2009 to Jan 8 2010 and Sep 2 to Oct 20 2010), a low-latency analysis pipeline was used to identify GW event candidates and to reconstruct maps of possible sky locations. A catalog of nearby galaxies and Milky Way globular clusters was used to select the most promising sky positions to be imaged, and this directional information was delivered to EM observatories with time lags of about thirty minutes. A Monte Carlo simulation has been used to evaluate the low-latency GW pipeline's ability to reconstruct source positions correctly. Results. For signals near the detection threshold, our low-latency algorithms often localized simulated GW burst signals to tens of square degrees, while neutron star/neutron star inspirals and neutron star/black hole inspirals were localized to a few hundred square degrees. Localization precision improves for moderately stronger signals. The correct sky location of signals well above threshold and originating from nearby galaxies may be observed with ~50% or better probability with a few pointings of wide-field telescopes.

38. Magnetic Frustration in a Quantum Spin Chain: The Case of Linarite PbCuSO4(OH)2

Abstract

We present a combined neutron diffraction and bulk thermodynamic study of the natural mineral linarite PbCuSO4(OH)2, this way establishing the nature of the ground-state magnetic order. An incommensurate magnetic ordering with a propagation vector k = (0, 0.186, 1/2) was found below TN = 2.8 K in a zero magnetic field. The analysis of the neutron diffraction data yields an elliptical helical structure, where one component (0.638 µB) is in the monoclinic ac plane forming an angle with the a axis of 27(2)°, while the other component (0.833 µB) points along the b axis. From a detailed thermodynamic study of bulk linarite in magnetic fields up to 12 T, applied along the chain direction, a very rich magnetic phase diagram is established, with multiple field-induced phases, and possibly short-range-order effects occurring in high fields. Our data establish linarite as a model compound of the frustrated one-dimensional spin chain, with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions. Long-range magnetic order is brought about by interchain coupling 1 order of magnitude smaller than the intrachain coupling.

Abstract

��-CaCr2O4 is a distorted triangular antiferromagnet. The magnetic Cr3+ ions which have spin-3/2 and interact with their nearest neighbors via Heisenberg direct exchange interactions, develop long-range magnetic order below T_N=42.6 K. Powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction reveal a helical magnetic structure with ordering wavevector k=(0,~1/3,0) and angles close to 120�� between neighboring spins. Spherical neutron polarimetry unambiguously proves that the spins lie in the ac plane perpendicular to k. The magnetic structure is therefore that expected for an ideal triangular antiferromagnet where all nearest neighbor interactions are equal, in spite of the fact that ��-CaCr2O4 is distorted with two inequivalent Cr3+ ions and four different nearest neighbor interactions. By simulating the magnetic order as a function of these four interactions it is found that the special pattern of interactions in ��-CaCr2O4 stabilizes 120�� helical order for a large range of exchange interactions., 13 pages, 12 figures
