För varje text ges upplysningar om författaren, från vilket verk texten hämtats, ungefär hur lång den är samt dess innehåll. Det finns också ett stort tematiskt register för läsledare som vill utgå från ett givet ämne eller en viss tematik. Guiden vänder sig framför allt till läsledare inom Shared Reading, men även till lärare som söker kortare texter att läsa högt och diskutera under litteratursamtal i skolan.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 led to Europe’s largest displacement of people since World War II, with significant substantial numbers of Ukrainian refugees seeking shelter in neighbouring countries. International research attests to the crucial roles public libraries can play in the reception and integration of refugees. However, diverse professional and geographical contexts and sociopolitical landscapes in which libraries work to support refugee reception and integration processes, necessitate ongoing and renewed focus on the topic. Therefore, this study examines how public libraries in Hungary and Poland responded to the influx of Ukrainian refugees, investigating their roles, programmes and partnerships. Using mixed methods, the study analyses previously unexamined 2018 questionnaire results and conducts 12 subsequent interviews with library staff. Findings reveal that libraries addressed a spectrum of user needs falling into three broad phases. Initially, they focussed on primary needs during the first phase, transitioning to settlement-related needs in the second phase. Variances between Poland and Hungary emerged during this phase, with Hungary primarily serving transient refugees and those with Hungarian backgrounds, while Poland saw a higher number of refugees of Ukrainian background settling. In the final phase, libraries emphasized literacy, integration and cultural support, aligning with reading and collection-oriented services. Service provision was characterized by nontraditional services in the first phase, non-collection-oriented services in the second phase and collection-oriented services in the third phase, with information provision central to all three phases. The study underscores public libraries’ role in addressing community needs, rooted in their core values of inclusivity and community engagement. This article analyses how library, archive and museum professionals legitimize the use of scarce societal resources for maintaining their respective organizations, with a special emphasis on their role as public-sphere infrastructure. Drawing on data from a survey among professionals in libraries, archives and museums in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, the authors investigate whether professionals across these institutions have similar expectations of their organizations to serve as public spheres. The analysis is contextualized with references to current library, archive and museum legislation across the three countries. The authors conclude that there are many similarities across the three countries, although national library, archive and museum legislation differs. This is interpreted in light of new public governance being a dominant regime of governance.

This study investigates how public libraries in Hungary and Poland are responding to the influx of Ukrainian refugees. Both countries had a very limited intake of refugees during the humanitarian crisis in 2015-2016. However, because of the Ukraine-Russia war, and due to their shared borders with Ukraine, Hungary and Poland have become initial host countries for large numbers of Ukrainian refugees (UNHCR 2022). Most of the refugees from the Ukraine are women and children and many are likely to stay in the countries for the foreseeable future (UNHCR Regional Bureau for Europe 2022). As public information and cultural institutions, how are libraries responding to the arrival of Ukrainian refugees in their communities? An emerging body of research indicates that public libraries can play important roles in the integration of refugees (Grossman et al. 2021; Johnston 2019; Johnston and Audunson 2019; Kosciejew 2019; Lloyd 2017; Pilerot 2018; Vårheim 2014, 2017; Witteveen 2016). Hungarian and Polish libraries with little refugee service experience have suddenly had to respond to an influx of users with very different needs from the domestic public. Insights from the field indicate that libraries in the two countries are rapidly developing their services to meet the urgent needs of the refugees and of their local communities as they grapple with the dramatic changes and resulting challenges. How do they grapple with this situation?

Shared Reading er en lesepraksis hvor folk, uansett alder og utdanning, kan komme sammen rundt skjønnlitteratur og skape mening. For første gang kommer en samlet framstilling av forskning på metoden i de skandinaviske landene. Denne antologien gir et mangefasettert bilde av Shared Reading som litteraturformidling, estetisk opplevelse og fellesskapsarena innenfor tre kontekster: mental helse, medborgerskap og (ut-)dannelse. Boka gir innsikt i metodens beskaffenheter, hvordan man kan bli en god leseleder og hvordan man kan bruke Shared Reading i ulike sammenhenger med barn, ungdom og voksne, og hva denne praksisen gjør med og for deltakerne. De ulike bidragene kaster lys over betydningen av tekstvalg, høytlesing og samtaler i ulike sosiale rom, og den danner et utgangspunkt for videre forskning på og utviklingen av lesepraksiser. Bidragsyterne er både utøvende leseledere og litteraturforskere. Antologien er blitt til gjennom et samarbeid mellom seks lese- og litteraturforskere i Danmark, Norge og Sverige. Alle arbeider også praktisk med Shared Reading, og har vært involverte i utviklingen av Shared Reading i de respektive land.

In this anthology, top scholars researching libraries, archives, and museums (LAM) issues in Scandinavia explore pressing issues for contemporary LAMs. In recent decades, relations between libraries, archives, and museums have changed rapidly: collections have been digitized; books, documents, and objects have been mixed in new ways; and LAMs have picked up new tasks in response to external changes. Libraries now host makerspaces and literary workshops, archives fight climate change and support indigenous people, and museums are used as instruments for economic growth and urban planning. At first glance, the described changes may appear as a divergent development, where the LAMs are growing apart. However, this book demonstrates that the present transformation of LAMs is primarily a convergent development. Libraries, Archives, and Museums in Transition will be essential reading for students, scholars, and practitioners seeking to get on top of the LAM literature or the particularities of Scandinavian LAMs.

Purpose The overarching aim of this article is to consider to what extent the perceptions of librarians in Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Norway, Poland and Sweden reflect a unified view of their professional role and the role of their institutions in supporting the formation of the public sphere and to what extent the variations reflect national contexts. Design/methodology/approach The multi-country comparison is based on online questionnaires. The central research questions are how do librarians legitimize the use of public resources to uphold a public library service? How do librarians perceive the role of public libraries as public spaces? How do librarians perceive their professional role and the competencies needed for it? Consideration is given to how the digital and social turns are reflected in the responses. Findings The results show evidence of a unified professional culture with clear influences from national contexts. A key finding is that librarians see giving access as central for both legitimizing library services and for the library's role as a public sphere institution. Strong support is shown for the social turn in supporting the formation of the public sphere while the digital turn appears to be a future challenge; one of seemingly increased importance due to the pandemic. Research limitations/implications This study shows that libraries across the seven countries have expanded beyond simply providing public access to their book-based collections and now serve as social, learning and creative spaces: both in the physical library and digitally. Qualitative research is needed concerning librarians' notions of public libraries and librarianship, which will provide a more in-depth understanding of the changing professional responsibilities and how public libraries recruit the associated competencies. Introduction This paper presents research on how public librarians in Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden view the importance of social reading and related professional roles. Method Previous research findings from a questionnaire administered to public librarians are analysed in depth in order to identify trends that can be further investigated in a subsequent qualitative study. Analysis The previous findings broadly show variation in the importance of social reading activities and related professional roles at the country level. A detailed understanding of the variations are elicited through a more comprehensive analysis at the country and community levels. Results Social reading is more important in larger communities in Iceland and Sweden and smaller communities in Denmark and Norway. The role of literary mediator appears to correspond highly to librarians' professional role across all countries and community sizes whereas that of literary critic somewhat less. Conclusion The results establish a need for further research on social reading in public libraries and provide a basis and direction for continued research, specifically to gain insight into the types and nature of activities generally included in social reading and the extent digital solutions are used.

This article is the result of an introductory two-year case study project that investigated community libraries supported by the not-for-profit organization Libros Para Pueblos (LPP) in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Libros Para Pueblos (LPP) is a largely volunteer-run library organization based in the capital city of Oaxaca de Juarez. In order to analyse the work of LPP we used Mostert & Vermeulen's (1998) nine areas for evaluation of community libraries. Over the past 20 years, the number of libraries the organization supports has grown from two to more than 70 throughout the state. The work that has facilitated this growth is carried out by a small Mexican staff, along with an Executive Committee and a Board of Directors made up of Americans and Canadians living in Mexico. The work is both time consuming and demanding, but it is fuelled by a positive reading ideology that is a result of memories of childhood reading. This motivation is shared by a network of 11 Mexican Regional Volunteer Coordinators who train and support local library workers. The local workers are often doing their tequio, which is a social requirement of working for one or two years in public service. We argue that the success of LPP libraries is influenced by: 1) an organizational structure that mandates Mexican leadership at the Executive level and in paid staff positions; 2) initiation from local representative; 3) the unique and complex socialist community configurations of the Oaxacan region; 4) a community of retirees who volunteer at many levels; and 5) national and international donations.
