Public opinion is subject to peer interaction via social networks and external pressure from the media, advertising, and other actors. In this paper, we study the interaction between external and peer influence on the stochastic opinion dynamics of a majority vote model. We introduce a model where agents update their opinions based on the combined influence of their local neighbourhood (peers) and an external actor in the transition rates. In the first model, the external influence is only felt by agents non-aligned with the external actor ("push strategy"). In the second model, agents are affected by external influence, independently of their opinions ("nudging strategy"). In both cases, the external influence increases the possible macroscopic outcomes. These outcomes are determined by the chosen influence strategy. We also find that the social network structure affects the opinion dynamics, with social clustering positively reinforcing the external influence whereas degree heterogeneity weakens the external forces. These findings are relevant to businesses and policy making, helping to understand how groups of individuals collectively react to external actors.

Accurate modeling of the temporal evolution of asset prices is crucial for understanding financial markets. We explore the potential of discrete-time quantum walks to model the evolution of asset prices. Return distributions obtained from a model based on the quantum walk algorithm are compared with those obtained from classical methodologies. We focus on specific limitations of the classical models, and illustrate that the quantum walk model possesses great flexibility in overcoming these. This includes the potential to generate asymmetric return distributions with complex market tendencies and higher probabilities for extreme events than in some of the classical models. In light of the recent Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) data for the nuclear $^{12}\text{C}(e,e'p)$ transparencies, calculations, obtained in a relativistic multiple scattering Glauber approximation, are discussed. The shell-separated $^{12}$C transparencies are shown and it is concluded that the $p$-shell nucleons are 75\% more transparent than the $s$-shell ones. The presented comparisons between the calculations made here and the current $^{12}\text{C}(e,e'p)$ data show no clear indication for the onset of color transparency when implemented within the color diffusion model with standard parameters., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. Innovation is fundamental for development and provides a competitive advantage for societies. It is the process of creating more complex technologies, ideas, or protocols from existing ones. While innovation may be created by single agents (i.e. individuals or organisations), it is often a result of social interactions between agents exchanging and combining complementary expertise and perspectives. The structure of social networks impacts this knowledge exchange process. To study the role of social network structures on the creation of new technologies, we design an evolutionary mechanistic model combining self-creation and social learning. We find that social heterogeneity allows agents to leverage the benefits of diversity and to develop technologies of higher complexity. Social heterogeneity, however, reduces the group ability to innovate. Not only the social structure but also the openness of agents to collaborate affect innovation. We find that interdisciplinary interactions lead to more complex technologies benefiting the entire group but also increase the inequality in the innovation output. Lower openness to interdisciplinary collaborations may be compensated by a higher ability to collaborate with multiple peers, but low openness also neutralises the intrinsic benefits of network heterogeneity. Our findings indicate that social network heterogeneity has contrasting effects on microscopic (local) and macroscopic (group) levels, suggesting that the emergence of innovation leaders may suppress the overall group performance., Comment: Comments welcome

Social animals self-organise to create groups to increase protection against predators and productivity. One-to-one interactions are the building blocks of these emergent social structures and may correspond to friendship, grooming, communication, among other social relations. These structures should be robust to failures and provide efficient communication to compensate the costs of forming and maintaining the social contacts but the specific purpose of each social interaction regulates the evolution of the respective social networks. We collate 611 animal social networks and show that the number of social contacts $E$ scales with group size $N$ as a super-linear power-law $E=CN^{\beta}$ for various species of animals, including humans, other mammals and non-mammals. We identify that the power-law exponent $\beta$ varies according to the social function of the interactions as $\beta = 1+a/4$, with $a \approx {1,2,3,4}$. By fitting a multi-layer model to our data, we observe that the cost to cross social groups also varies according to social function. Relatively low costs are observed for physical contact, grooming and group membership which lead to small groups with high and constant social clustering. Offline friendship has similar patterns while online friendship shows weak social structures. The intermediate case of spatial proximity ($\beta=1.5$ and clustering dependency on network size quantitatively similar to friendship) suggests that proximity interactions may be as relevant for the spread of infectious diseases as for social processes like friendship., Comment: To appear in Scientific Reports

Machine learning provides a novel avenue for the study of experimental realizations of many-body systems, and has recently been proven successful in analyzing properties of experimental data of ultracold quantum gases. We here show that deep learning succeeds in the more challenging task of modelling such an experimental data distribution. Our generative model (RUGAN) is able to produce snapshots of a doped two-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model that are indistinguishable from previously reported experimental realizations. Importantly, it is capable of accurately generating snapshots at conditions for which it did not observe any experimental data, such as at higher doping values. On top of that, our generative model extracts relevant patterns from small-scale examples and can use these to construct new configurations at a larger size that serve as a precursor to observations at scales that are currently experimentally inaccessible. The snapshots created by our model---which come at effectively no cost---are extremely useful as they can be employed to quantitatively test new theoretical developments under conditions that have not been explored experimentally, parameterize phenomenological models, or train other, more data-intensive, machine learning methods. We provide predictions for experimental observables at unobserved conditions and benchmark these against modern theoretical frameworks. The deep learning method we develop here is broadly applicable and can be used for the efficient large-scale simulation of equilibrium and nonequilibrium physical systems.

The variations of short-range correlations (SRC) across nuclei can be quantified in an approximately model-independent fashion in terms of the so-called SRC scaling factors. We provide predictions for the SRC scaling factors for both bound protons and bound neutrons across the nuclear periodic table and determine the contribution of the different nucleon pair combinations to this quantity. Thereby we employ the low-order correlation operator approximation (LCA) to compute the SRC contribution to the single-nucleon momentum distribution. We do this for a sample of fifteen nuclei from He to Pb thereby gaining access to the evolution of the SRC scaling factor with the nuclear mass and the neutron-to-proton ratio. For the studied sample of fifteen nuclei, the total SRC scaling factor is in the range 4.05-5.14. The computed SRC scaling factors in the LCA are in line with those of ab-initio calculations and with measured quantities from SRC-sensitive inclusive electron-scattering data. In asymmetric nuclei there are sizeable differences between the SRC scaling factors for protons and neutrons. It is suggested that this phenomenon may impact the variations of the magnitude of the European muon collaboration (EMC) effect across nuclei. Since the 2007-2009 financial crisis, substantial academic effort has been dedicated to improving our understanding of interbank lending networks (ILNs). Because of data limitations or by choice, the literature largely lacks multiple loan maturities. We employ a complete interbank loan contract dataset to investigate whether maturity details are informative of the network structure. Applying the layered stochastic block model of Peixoto (2015) and other tools from network science on a time series of bilateral loans with multiple maturity layers in the Russian ILN, we find that collapsing all such layers consistently obscures mesoscale structure. The optimal maturity granularity lies between completely collapsing and completely separating the maturity layers and depends on the development phase of the interbank market, with a more developed market requiring more layers for optimal description. Closer inspection of the inferred maturity bins associated with the optimal maturity granularity reveals specific economic functions, from liquidity intermediation to financing. Collapsing a network with multiple underlying maturity layers or extracting one such layer, common in economic research, is therefore not only an incomplete representation of the ILN's mesoscale structure, but also conceals existing economic functions. This holds important insights and opportunities for theoretical and empirical studies on interbank market functioning, contagion, stability, and on the desirable level of regulatory data disclosure.

Although artificial neural networks have recently been proven to provide a promising new framework for constructing quantum many-body wave functions, the parameterization of a quantum wavefunction with nonabelian symmetries in terms of a Boltzmann machine inherently leads to biased results due to the basis dependence. We demonstrate that this problem can be overcome by sampling in the basis of irreducible representations instead of spins, for which the corresponding ansatz respects the nonabelian symmetries of the system. We apply our methodology to find the ground states of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg (AFH) model with spin-half and spin-1 degrees of freedom, and obtain a substantially higher accuracy than when using the $s_z$-basis as input to the neural network. The proposed ansatz can target excited states, which is illustrated by calculating the energy gap of the AFH model. We also generalize the framework to the case of anyonic spin chains.

We provide a systematic study of the isospin composition and neutron-to-proton $\left( \frac{N}{Z} \right)$ ratio dependence of nuclear short-range correlations (SRC) across the nuclear mass table. We use the low-order correlation operator approximation (LCA) to compute the SRC contribution to the single-nucleon momentum distributions for 14 different nuclei from $A=4$ to $A=208$. Ten asymmetric nuclei are included for which the neutrons outnumber the protons by a factor of up to 1.54. The computed momentum distributions are used to extract the pair composition of the SRC. We find that there is a comprehensive picture for the isospin composition of SRC and their evolution with nucleon momentum. We also compute the non-relativistic kinetic energy of neutrons and protons and its evolution with nuclear mass $A$ and $\frac{N}{Z}$. Confirming the conclusions from alternate studies it is shown that the minority species (protons) become increasingly more short-range correlated as the neutron-to-proton ratio increases. We forge connections between measured nucleon-knockout quantities sensitive to SRC and single-nucleon momentum distributions. It is shown that the LCA can account for the observed trends in the data, like the fact that in neutron-rich nuclei the protons are responsible for an unexpectedly large fraction of the high-momentum components., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Structural balance in social network theory starts from signed networks with active relationships (friendly or hostile) to establish a hierarchy between four different types of triadic relationships. The lack of an active link also provides information about the network. To exploit the information that remains uncovered by structural balance, we introduce the inactive relationship that accounts for both neutral and nonexistent ties between two agents. This addition results in ten types of triads, with the advantage that the network analysis can be done with complete networks. To each type of triadic relationship, we assign an energy that is a measure for its average occupation probability. Finite temperatures account for a persistent form of disorder in the formation of the triadic relationships. We propose a Hamiltonian with three interaction terms and a chemical potential (capturing the cost of edge activation) as an underlying model for the triadic energy levels. Our model is suitable for empirical analysis of political networks and allows to uncover generative mechanisms. It is tested on an extended data set for the standings between two classes of alliances in a massively multi-player on-line game (MMOG) and on real-world data for the relationships between countries during the Cold War era. We find emergent properties in the triadic relationships between the nodes in a political network. For example, we observe a persistent hierarchy between the ten triadic energy levels across time and networks. In addition, the analysis reveals consistency in the extracted model parameters and a universal data collapse of a derived combination of global properties of the networks. Short-range correlations (SRC) in asymmetric nuclei with an unusual neutron-to-proton ratio can be studied with quasi-free two-nucleon knockout processes following the collision between accelerated ions and a proton target. We derive an approximate factorized cross section for those SRC-driven $p(A,p^{\prime} N_1 N_2)$ reactions. Our reaction model hinges on the factorization properties of SRC-driven $A(e, e^\prime N_1 N_2)$ reactions for which strong indications are found in theory-experiment comparisons. In order to put our model to the test we compare its predictions with results of $^{12}\text{C}(p,p^{\prime} pn)$ measurements conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and find a fair agreement. The model can also reproduce characteristic features of SRC-driven two-nucleon knockout reactions, like back-to-back emission of the correlated nucleons. We study the asymmetry dependence of nuclear SRC by providing predictions for the ratio of proton-proton to proton-neutron knockout cross sections for the carbon isotopes $^{9-15}$C thereby covering neutron excess values $(N-Z)/Z$ between -0.5 and +0.5., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures. Triadic relationships are accepted to play a key role in the dynamics of social and political networks. Building on insights gleaned from balance theory in social network studies and from Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical physics, we propose a model to quantitatively capture the dynamics of the four types of triadic relationships in a network. Central to our model are the triads' incidence rates and the idea that those can be modeled by assigning a specific triadic energy to each type of triadic relation. We emphasize the role of the degeneracy of the different triads and how it impacts the degree of frustration in the political network. In order to account for a persistent form of disorder in the formation of the triadic relationships, we introduce the systemic variable temperature. In order to learn about the dynamics and motives, we propose a generic Hamiltonian with three terms to model the triadic energies. One term is connected with a three-body interaction that captures balance theory. The other terms take into account the impact of heterogeneity and of negative edges in the triads. The validity of our model is tested on four datasets including the time series of triadic relationships for the standings between two classes of alliances in a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG). We also analyze real-world data for the relationships between the "agents" involved in the Syrian civil war, and in the relations between countries during the Cold War era. We find emerging properties in the triadic relationships in a political network, for example reflecting itself in a persistent hierarchy between the four triadic energies, and in the consistency of the extracted parameters from comparing the model Hamiltonian to the data., Comment: 18 pages - 10 figures

Using detailed statistical analyses of the size distribution of a universe of equity exchange-traded funds (ETFs), we discover a discrete hierarchy of sizes, which imprints a log-periodic structure on the probability distribution of ETF sizes that dominates the details of the asymptotic tail. This allows us to propose a classification of the studied universe of ETFs into seven size layers approximately organized according to a multiplicative ratio of 3.5 in their total market capitalization. Introducing a similarity metric generalising the Herfindhal index, we find that the largest ETFs exhibit a significantly stronger intra-layer and inter-layer similarity compared with the smaller ETFs. Comparing the performance across the seven discerned ETF size layers, we find an inverse size effect, namely large ETFs perform significantly better than the small ones both in 2014 and 2015.

We present a detailed study of charged-current quasielastic neutrino-nucleus scattering and of the influence of correlations on one- and two-nucleon knockout processes. The quasielastic neutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections, including the influence of long-range correlations, are evaluated within a continuum random phase approximation approach. The short-range correlation formalism is implemented in the impulse approximation by shifting the complexity induced by the correlations from the wave functions to the operators. The model is validated by confronting $(e,e^\prime)$ cross-section predictions with electron scattering data in the kinematic region where the quasielastic channel is expected to dominate. Further, the $^{12}$C$(\nu,\mu^-)$ experiments are studied. Double differential cross sections relevant for neutrino-oscillation $^{12}$C$(\nu,\mu^-)$ cross sections, accounting for long- and short-range correlations in the one-particle emission channel and short-range correlations in the two-particle two-hole channel, are presented for kinematics relevant for recent neutrino-nucleus scattering measurements., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Background: Nuclear short-range correlations (SRCs) are corrections to mean-field wave functions connected with the short-distance behavior of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. These SRCs provide corrections to lepton- nucleus cross sections as computed in the impulse approximation (IA). Purpose: We want to investigate the influence of SRCs on the one-nucleon (1N) and two-nucleon (2N) knockout channel for muon-neutrino induced processes on a $^{12}$C target at energies relevant for contemporary measurements. Method: The model adopted in this work, corrects the impulse approximation for SRCs by shifting the com- plexity induced by the SRCs from the wave functions to the operators. Due to the local character of the SRCs, it is argued that the expansion of these operators can be truncated at a low order. Results: The model is compared with electron-scattering data, and two-particle two-hole responses are presented for neutrino scattering. The contributions from the vector and axial-vector parts of the nuclear current as well as the central, tensor and spin-isospin part of the SRCs are studied. Conclusions: Nuclear SRCs affect the 1N knockout channel and give rise to 2N knockout. The exclusive neutrino-induced 2N knockout cross section of SRC pairs is shown and the 2N knockout contribution to the QE signal is calculated. A framework based on generalized hierarchical random graphs (GHRGs) for the detection of change points in the structure of temporal networks has recently been developed by Peel and Clauset [1]. We build on this methodology and extend it to also include the versatile stochastic block models (SBMs) as a parametric family for reconstructing the empirical networks. We use five different techniques for change point detection on prototypical temporal networks, including empirical and synthetic ones. We find that none of the considered methods can consistently outperform the others when it comes to detecting and locating the expected change points in empirical temporal networks. Background: Exclusive two-nucleon knockout after electroexcitation of nuclei ($A(e,e'NN)$ in brief) is considered to be a primary source of information about short-range correlations (SRC) in nuclei. For a proper interpretation of the data, final-state interactions (FSI) need to be theoretically controlled. Purpose: Our goal is to quantify the role of FSI effects in exclusive $A(e,e'pN)$ reactions for four target nuclei representative for the whole mass region. Our focus is on processes that are SRC driven. We investigate the role of FSI for two characteristic detector setups corresponding with a "small" and "large" coverage of the available phase space. Results: The transparency $T^{pN}_{A}$, defined as the ratio of exclusive $(e,e'pN)$ cross sections on nuclei to those on "free" nucleon pairs, drops from $ 0.2-0.3 $ for $^{12}$C to $0.04-0.07$ for $^{208}$Pb. For all considered kinematics, the mass dependence of the $T^{pN}_{A}$ can be captured by the power law $T^{pN}_{A} \propto A^{- \lambda}$ with $ 0.4 \lesssim \lambda \lesssim 0.5 $. Apart from an overall reduction factor, we find that FSI only modestly affects the distinct features of SRC-driven $A(e,e'pN)$ which are dictated by the c.m. distribution of close-proximity pairs. Conclusion: The SCX mechanisms represent a relatively small (order of a few percent) contribution of SRC-driven $A(e,e'pN)$ processes. The mass dependence of FSI effects in exclusive $A(e,e'pN)$ can be captured in a robust power law and is in agreement with the predictions obtained in a toy model.

A complete set for pseudoscalar-meson photoproduction is a minimum set of observables from which one can determine the underlying reaction amplitudes unambiguously. The complete sets considered in this work involve single- and double-polarization observables. It is argued that for extracting amplitudes from data, the transversity representation of the reaction amplitudes offers advantages over alternate representations. It is shown that with the available single-polarization data for the p({\gamma},K^+)\Lambda reaction, the energy and angular dependence of the moduli of the normalized transversity amplitudes in the resonance region can be determined to a fair accuracy. We use daily data on bilateral interbank exposures and monthly bank balance sheets to study network characteristics of the Russian interbank market over Aug 1998 - Oct 2004. Specifically, we examine the distributions of (un)directed (un)weighted degree, nodal attributes (bank assets, capital and capital-to-assets ratio) and edge weights (loan size and counterparty exposure). We search for the theoretical distribution that fits the data best and report the "best" fit parameters. We observe that all studied distributions are heavy tailed. The fat tail typically contains 20% of the data and can be mostly described well by a truncated power law. Also the power law, stretched exponential and log-normal provide reasonably good fits to the tails of the data. In most cases, however, separating the bulk and tail parts of the data is hard, so we proceed to study the full range of the events. We find that the stretched exponential and the log-normal distributions fit the full range of the data best. These conclusions are robust to 1) whether we aggregate the data over a week, month, quarter or year; 2) whether we look at the "growth" versus "maturity" phases of interbank market development; and 3) with minor exceptions, whether we look at the "normal" versus "crisis" operation periods. We consider two large polaron systems that are described by a Fr\"{o}hlich type of Hamiltonian, namely the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) polaron in the continuum and the acoustic polaron in a solid. We present ground-state energies of these two systems calculated with the Diagrammatic Monte Carlo (DiagMC) method and with a Feynman all-coupling approach. The DiagMC method evaluates up to very high order a diagrammatic series for the polaron Green's function. The Feynman all-coupling approach is a variational method that has been used for a wide range of polaronic problems. For the acoustic and BEC polaron both methods provide remarkably similar non-renormalized ground-state energies that are obtained after introducing a finite momentum cutoff. For the renormalized ground-state energies of the BEC polaron, there are relatively large discrepancies between the DiagMC and the Feynman predictions. These differences can be attributed to the renormalization procedure for the contact interaction., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

Nuclear short-range correlations (SRC) typically manifest themselves in the tail parts of the single-nucleon momentum distributions. We propose an approximate practical method for computing those SRC contributions to the high-momentum parts. The framework adopted in this work is applicable throughout the nuclear mass table and corrects mean-field models for central, spin-isospin and tensor correlations by shifting the complexity induced by the SRC from the wave functions to the operators. It is argued that the expansion of these modified operators can be truncated to a low order. The proposed model can generate the SRC-related high-momentum tail of the single-nucleon momentum distribution. These are dominated by correlation operators acting on mean-field pairs with vanishing relative radial and angular-momentum quantum numbers. The proposed method explains the dominant role of proton-neutron pairs in generating the SRC and accounts for the magnitude and mass dependence of SRC as probed in inclusive electron scattering. It also provides predictions for the ratio of the amount of correlated proton-proton to proton-neutron pairs which are in line with the observations. Background: In $\pi^+n$ and $\pi^-p$ electroproduction, conventional models cannot satisfactory explain the data above the resonance region, in particular the transverse cross section. Although no high-energy L-T-separated cross-section data is available to date, a similar scenario can be inferred for $K^+\Lambda$ electroproduction. Purpose: Develop a phenomenological model for the $p(\gamma^*,K^+)\Lambda$ reaction at forward angles and high-energies. Propose a universal framework for interpreting charged-kaon and charged-pion electroproduction above the resonance region. Method: Guided by the recent model for charged-pion electroproduction, developed by the authors, a framework for $K^+\Lambda$ electroproduction at high energies and forward angles is constructed. To this end, a Reggeized background model for $K^+\Lambda$ photoproduction is first developed. This model is used as a starting base to set up an electroproduction framework. Results: The few available data of the unseparated $p(\gamma^*,K^+)\Lambda$ cross section are well explained by the model. Predictions for the L-T-separation experiment planned with the 12 GeV upgrade at Jefferson Lab are given. The newly-proposed framework predicts an increased magnitude for the transverse structure function, similar to the situation in charged-pion electroproduction. Conclusions: Within a hadronic framework featuring Reggeized background amplitudes, $s$-channel resonance-parton effects can explain the observed magnitude of the unseparated $p(\gamma^*,K^+)\Lambda$ cross section at high energies and forward angles. We study the properties of the two-dimensional Fermi polaron model in which an impurity attractively interacts with a Fermi sea of particles in the zero-range limit. We use a diagrammatic Monte Carlo (DiagMC) method which allows us to sample a Feynman diagrammatic series to very high order. The convergence properties of the series and the role of multiple particle-hole excitations are discussed. We study the polaron and molecule energy as a function of the coupling strength, revealing a transition from a polaron to a molecule in the ground state. We find a value for the critical interaction strength which complies with the experimentally measured one and predictions from variational methods. For all considered interaction strengths, the polaron $Z$ factor from the full diagrammatic series almost coincides with the one-particle-hole result. Pseudoscalar-meson photoproduction is characterized by four complex reaction amplitudes. A complete set is a minimum theoretical set of observables that allow to determine these amplitudes unambiguously. It is studied whether complete sets remain complete when experimental uncertainty is involved. To this end, data from the GRAAL Collaboration and simulated data from a realistic model, both for the $\gamma p \to K^+ \Lambda$ reaction, are analyzed in the transversity representation of the reaction amplitudes. We investigate the factorization properties of the exclusive electroinduced two-nucleon knockout reaction $A(e,e'pN)$. A factorized expression for the cross section is derived and the conditions for factorization are studied. The $A(e,e'pN)$ cross section is shown to be proportional to the conditional center-of-mass (c.m.) momentum distribution for close-proximity pairs in a state with zero relative orbital momentum and zero radial quantum number. The width of this conditional c.m. momentum distribution is larger than the one corresponding with the full c.m. momentum distribution. It is shown that the final-state interactions (FSIs) only moderately affect the shape of the factorization function for the $A(e,e'pN)$ cross sections. Another prediction of the proposed factorization is that the mass dependence of the $A(e,e'pp)$ $[A(e,e'pn)]$ cross sections is much softer than $\frac{Z(Z-1)}{2}$ $[NZ]$., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables. [Background] Above the nucleon resonance region, the $N(e,e'\pi^\pm)N'$ data cannot be explained by conventional hadronic models. For example, the observed magnitude of the transverse cross section is significantly underestimated in a framework with Reggeized background amplitudes. [Purpose] Develop a phenomenological framework for the $N(e,e'\pi^\pm)N'$ reaction at high invariant mass $W$ and deep photon virtuality $Q^2$. [Method] Building on the work of Kaskulov and Mosel, a gauged pion-exchange current is introduced with a running cutoff energy for the proton electromagnetic transition form factor. A new transition form factor is proposed. It respects the correct on-shell limit, has a simple physical interpretation and reduces the number of free parameters by one. [Results] A study of the $W$ dependence of the $N(e,e'\pi^\pm)N'$ lends support for the newly proposed transition form factor. In addition, an improved description of the separated and unseparated cross sections at $-t \lesssim 0.5 \;\text{GeV}^2$ is obtained. The predictions overshoot the measured unseparated cross sections for $-t > 0.5 \;\text{GeV}^2$. Introducing a strong hadronic form factor in the Reggeized background amplitudes brings the calculations considerably closer to the high $-t$ data. [Conclusions] Hadronic models corrected for resonance/parton duality describe the separated pion electroproduction cross sections above the resonance region reasonably well at low $-t$. In order to validate the applicability of these models at high $-t$, separated cross sections are needed. These are expected to provide a more profound insight into the relevant reaction mechanisms., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

We sketch an approximate method to quantify the number of correlated pairs in any nucleus $A$. It is based on counting independent-particle model (IPM) nucleon-nucleon pairs in a relative $S$-state with no radial excitation. We show that IPM pairs with those quantum numbers are most prone to short-range correlations and are at the origin of the high-momentum tail of the nuclear momentum distributions. Our method allows to compute the $a_2$ ratios extracted from inclusive electron scattering. Furthermore, our results reproduce the observed linear correlation between the number of correlated pairs and the magnitude of the EMC effect. We show that the width of the pair center-of-mass distribution in exclusive two-nucleon knockout yields information on the quantum numbers of the pairs., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table. [Background] A complete set is a minimum set of observables which allows one to determine the underlying reaction amplitudes unambiguously. Pseudoscalar-meson photoproduction from the nucleon is characterized by four such amplitudes and complete sets involve single- and double-polarization observables. [Purpose] Identify complete sets of observables, and study how measurements with finite error bars impact their potential to determine the reaction amplitudes unambiguously. [Method] The authors provide arguments to employ the transversity representation in order to determine the amplitudes in pseudoscalar-meson photoproduction. It is studied whether the amplitudes in the transversity basis for the $\gamma p \to K^+\Lambda$ reaction can be estimated without ambiguity. To this end, data from the GRAAL collaboration and mock data from a realistic model are analyzed. [Results] It is illustrated that the moduli of normalized transversity amplitudes can be determined from precise single-polarization data. Starting from mock data with achievable experimental resolution, it is quite likely to obtain imaginary solutions for the relative phases of the amplitudes. Also the real solutions face a discrete phase ambiguity which makes it impossible to obtain a statistically significant solution for the relative phases at realistic experimental conditions. [Conclusions] Single polarization observables are effective in determining the moduli of the amplitudes in a transversity basis. Determining the relative phases of the amplitudes from double-polarization observables is far less evident. The availability of a complete set of observables does not allow one to unambiguously determine the reaction amplitudes with statistical significance., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 8 tables

We report on a study of a spin-down impurity strongly coupled to a spin-up Fermi sea (a so-called Fermi polaron) with the diagrammatic Monte-Carlo (DiagMC) technique. Conditions of zero temperature and three dimensions are considered for an ultracold atomic gas with resonant interactions in the zero-range limit. A Feynman diagrammatic series is developed for the one-body and two-body propagators providing information about the polaron and molecule channel respectively. The DiagMC technique allows us to reach diagram orders that are high enough for extrapolation to infinite order. The robustness of the extracted results is examined by checking various resummation techniques and by running the simulations with various choices for the propagators and vertex functions. It turns out that dressing the lines in the diagrams as much as possible is not always the optimal choice. We also identify classes of dominant diagrams for the one-body and two-body self-energy in the region of strong interaction. These dominant diagrams turn out to be the leading processes of the strong-coupling limit. The quasiparticle energies and $Z$-factor are obtained as a function of the interaction strength. We find that the DiagMC results for the molecule and polaron properties are very similar to those obtained with a variational ansatz. Surprisingly, this variational ansatz gives very good predictions for the quasiparticle residue even when this residue is significantly smaller than one., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures

[Background] The recent Jefferson Lab data for the nuclear transparency in $\rho^ {0}$ electroproduction have the potential to settle the scale for the onset of color transparency (CT) in vector meson production. [Purpose] To compare the data to calculations in a relativistic and quantum-mechanical Glauber model and to investigate whether they are in accordance with results including color transparency given that the computation of $\rho$-nucleus attenuations is subject to some uncertainties. [Method] We compute the nuclear transparencies in a multiple-scattering Glauber model and account for effects stemming from color transparency, from $\rho$-meson decay, and from short-range correlations (SRC) in the final-state interactions (FSI). [Results] The robustness of the model is tested by comparing the mass dependence and the hard-scale dependence of the $A(e,e'p)$ nuclear transparencies with the data. The hard-scale dependence of the $(e,e' \rho ^ {0})$ nuclear transparencies for $^ {12}$C and $^ {56}$Fe are only moderately affected by SRC and by $\rho^ {0}$-decay. [Conclusions] The RMSGA calculations confirm the onset of CT at four-momentum transfers of a few (GeV/c)$^2$ in $\rho$ meson electroproduction data. A more precise determination of the scale for the onset of CT is hampered by the lack of precise input in the FSI and $\rho$-meson decay calculations., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures. It is shown that polarization transfer measurements $(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})$ on a specific target nucleus can provide constraints on the ratio of the in-medium electric to magnetic form factor. Thereby one exploits the fact that proton knockout from single-particle levels exhibit a specific sensitivity to the effective nuclear density. It is shown that in $^{12}$C the effective nuclear density for $s$-shell knockout is about twice as high as for $p$-shell knockout. With current model predictions for the in-medium form factors, one obtains measurable modifications of the order of 5% in the ratios of the double polarization observables between those single-particle levels.

A Bayesian analysis of the world's $p(\gamma,K^+)\Lambda$ data is presented. We adopt a Regge-plus-resonance framework featuring consistent interactions for nucleon resonances up to spin $J = 5/2$. The power of the momentum dependence of the consistent interaction structure rises with the spin of the resonance. This leads to unphysical structures in the energy dependence of the computed cross sections when the short-distance physics is cut off with standard hadronic form factors. A plausible, spin-dependent modification of the hadronic form factor is proposed which suppresses the unphysical artifacts. Next, we evaluate all possible combinations of 11 candidate resonances. The best model is selected from the 2048 model variants by calculating the Bayesian evidence values against the world's $p(\gamma,K^+)\Lambda$ data. From the proposed selection of 11 resonances, we find that the following nucleon resonances have the highest probability of contributing to the reaction: $S_{11}(1535)$, $S_{11}(1650)$, $F_{15}(1680)$, $P_{13}(1720)$, $D_{13}(1900)$, $P_{13}(1900)$, $P_{11}(1900)$, and $F_{15}(2000)$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

An approximate method to quantify the mass dependence of the number of two-nucleon (2N) short-range correlations (SRC) in nuclei is suggested. The proposed method relies on the concept of the "local nuclear character" of the SRC. We quantify the SRC and its mass dependence by computing the number of independent-particle model (IPM) nucleon pairs in a zero relative orbital momentum state. We find that the relative probability per nucleon for 2N SRC follows a power law as a function of the mass number $A$. The predictions are connected to measurements which provide access to the mass dependence of SRC. First, the ratio of the inclusive inelastic electron scattering cross sections of nuclei to $^{2}$H at large values of the Bjorken variable. We present a Regge-inspired effective-Lagrangian framework for kaon photoproduction from the deuteron. Quasi-free kaon production is investigated using the Regge-plus-resonance (RPR) elementary operator within the relativistic plane-wave impulse approximation. The RPR model was developed to describe photoinduced and electroinduced charged-kaon production off protons. We show how this elementary operator can be transformed in order to account for the production of neutral kaons from both protons and neutrons. An approximate method to quantify the magnitude of the two-nucleon (2N) and three-nucleon (3N) short-range correlations (SRC) and their mass dependence is proposed. The proposed method relies on the concept of the "universality" or "local nuclear character" of the SRC. We quantify the SRC by computing the number of independent-particle model (IPM) nucleon pairs and triples which reveal beyond-mean-field behavior. It is argued that those can be identified by counting the number of nucleon pairs and triples in a zero relative orbital momentum state. A method to determine the quantum numbers of pairs and triples in an arbitrary mean-field basis is outlined. The mass dependence of the 2N and 3N SRC is studied. The predictions are compared to measurements. This includes the ratio of the inclusive inelastic electron scattering cross sections of nuclei to 2H and 3He at large values of the Bjorken variable. Corrections stemming from the center-of-mass motion of the pairs are estimated. We find that the relative probability per nucleon for 2N and 3N SRC has a soft dependence with mass number A and that the proton-neutron 2N SRC outnumber the proton-proton (neutron-neutron) 2N SRC. A linear relationship between the magnitude of the EMC effect and the predicted number of proton-neutron SRC pairs is observed. We address the issue of unbiased model selection and propose a methodology based on Bayesian inference to extract physical information from kaon photoproduction $p(\gamma,K^+)\Lambda$ data. We use the single-channel Regge-plus-resonance (RPR) framework for $p(\gamma,K^+)\Lambda$ to illustrate the proposed strategy. The Bayesian evidence Z is a quantitative measure for the model's fitness given the world's data. We present a numerical method for performing the multidimensional integrals in the expression for the Bayesian evidence. We use the $p(\gamma,K^+)\Lambda$ data with an invariant energy W > 2.6 GeV in order to constrain the background contributions in the RPR framework with Bayesian inference. Next, the resonance information is extracted from the analysis of differential cross sections, single and double polarization observables. This background and resonance content constitutes the basis of a model which is coined RPR-2011. It is shown that RPR-2011 yields a comprehensive account of the kaon photoproduction data and provides reasonable predictions for $p(e,e' K^+)\Lambda$ observables., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures

We address the issue of consistent interactions for off-shell fermion fields of arbitrary spin. These interactions play a crucial role in the quantum hadrodynamical description of high-spin baryon resonances in hadronic processes. The Rarita-Schwinger description of high-spin fermion fields involves unphysical degrees of freedom, associated with their lower-spin content. These enter the interaction if not eliminated outright. The invariance condition of the interaction under the unconstrained Rarita-Schwinger gauge removes the lower-spin content of the fermion propagator and leads to a consistent description of the interaction. We develop the most general, consistent interaction structure for high-spin fermions. We find that the power of the momentum dependence of a consistent interaction rises with the spin of the fermion field. This leads to unphysical structures in the energy dependence of the computed cross sections when the short-distance physics is cut off with standard hadronic form factors. We suggest that the number of correlated nucleon pairs in an arbitrary nucleus can be estimated by counting the number of proton-neutron, proton-proton, and neutron-neutron pairs residing in a relative $S$ state. We present numerical calculations of those amounts for the nuclei $^{4}$He, $^{9}$Be, $ ^{12}$C, $ ^{27}$Al, $ ^{40}$Ca, $ ^{48}$Ca, $ ^{56}$Fe, $ ^{63}$Cu, $ ^{108}$Ag, and $ ^{197}$Au. We address the issue whether quasifree single-nucleon knockout measurements carry sufficient information about the nuclear interior. To this end, we present comparisons of the reaction probability densities for $A(e,e'p)$ and $A(p,2p)$ in quasifree kinematics for the target nuclei $^{4}$He, $^{12}$C, $^{56}$Fe, and $^{208}$Pb. We adopt a comprehensive framework based on the impulse approximation and on a relativized extension of Glauber multiple-scattering reaction theory in which the medium effects related to short-range correlations (SRC) are implemented. It is demonstrated that SRC weaken the effect of attenuation. For light target nuclei, both the quasifree $(p,2p)$ and $(e,e'p)$ can probe average densities of the same order as nuclear saturation density $\rho_{0}$. For heavy nuclei like $^{208}$Pb, the probed average densities are smaller than $0.1\rho_{0}$ and the $(e,e'p)$ reaction is far more efficient in probing the bulk regions than $(p,2p)$., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

We present a novel method to study the dynamics of bulk fermion systems such as the neutron-star crust. By introducing periodic boundary conditions into Fermionic Molecular Dynamics, it becomes possible to examine the long-range many-body correlations induced by antisymmetrisation in bulk fermion systems. The presented technique treats the spins and the fermionic nature of the nucleons explicitly and permits investigating the dynamics of the system.
