Приемы риторического мастерства, разработанные античными авторами, активно использовались в Византии в самых разных литературных жанрах, в том числе и в медицинских трактатах. В статье представлены результаты исследования риторических приемов, применяемых в медицинских текстах. В качестве объекта исследования выбрано сочинение византийского медика XIV в. Иоанна Актуария «Об энергиях и болезнях душевной пневмы». Трактат посвящен болезням пневмы — одного из важных структурных элементов строения человека в представлении древних греков и византийцев. В статье рассмотрена внутренняя структура сочинения, лексические особенности текста и различные литературные приемы, которыми пользовался автор. К подобным приемам относятся многочисленные цитирования и сравнения. Результаты исследования трактата Иоанна Актуария доказывают, что литературные приемы имели важное функциональное значение: они использовались в качестве доказательных аргументов византийского медика. Выбранный трактат ярко иллюстрирует, что встреченные лексические особенности и образные средства являются свидетельством хорошего образования автора и высокого уровня аудитории, для которой был предназначен этот трактат. Также в ходе исследования было отмечено, что большая часть приемов, доказательств и лексических особенностей была заимствована автором из античных текстов, переосмыслена и введена в новое смысловое поле в качестве подтверждения его точки зрения. Совокупность наблюдений позволяет говорить о существовании научного дискурса, принятого в византийской интеллектуальной среде, ярким представителем которой был Иоанн Актуарий, а названные особенности рассматривать как структурные элементы научного дискурса. The Byzantines actively used techniques of rhetorical skill developed by ancient authors in various literary genres, including medical treatises. This article presents the results of a study of rhetorical techniques used in medical texts. The author examines On Energies and Mental Illnesses of Psychic Pneuma, a work by Johannes Actuarios, a fourteenth-century Byzantine physician. The treatise is devoted to the diseases of pneuma — one of the important elements of the human structure from the point of view of the ancient Greeks and Byzantines. The article examines the internal structure of the essay, the lexical particularities of the text, and various literary techniques used by the author. Such methods include numerous citations and comparisons. The results of the study prove that literary techniques had an important functional significance: they were used as evidentiary arguments of the Byzantine doctor. The treatise clearly illustrates that the lexical features and figurative means encountered indicate a good education of the author and a high level of the target audience. During the study, it is also noted that most of the techniques, proof, and lexical features were borrowed by the author from ancient texts, reinterpreted and introduced into a new semantic field as a confirmation of his point of view. The totality of observations makes it possible to speak about the existence of a scientific discourse adopted in the Byzantine intellectual community, of which Johannes Actuarios was a prominent representative, and these features are regarded as structural elements of scientific discourse.

In the Arctic, under-ice primary production is limited to summer months and is restricted not only by ice thickness and snow cover but also by the stratification of the water column, which constrains nutrient supply for algal growth. Research Vessel Polarstern visited the ice-covered eastern-central basins between 82° to 89°N and 30° to 130°E in summer 2012, when Arctic sea ice declined to a record minimum. During this cruise, we observed a widespread deposition of ice algal biomass of on average 9 grams of carbon per square meter to the deep-sea floor of the central Arctic basins. Data from this cruise will contribute to assessing the effect of current climate change on Arctic productivity, biodiversity, and ecological function.
