Tobacco use in sports is widespread and has been resistant to change over the years. Modest progress has been made but more is needed to protect the health of athletes in competition. Tobacco use in sports has become a part of the culture in some sports but remains hidden in others. Athletes have a false sense of performance enhancement without the knowledge of what is actually happening to their bodies through tobacco use. Tobacco companies have been less than helpful over the years as they continue to market to young people. These companies have a long history of public deception and complicity when it comes to tobacco use and abuse in general and in sport. The dentist who works with an athletic team or community needs to know the basics of medical and dental disease caused by tobacco use in order to counsel and surveil the athletes in their charge.
