Australian screen, meaning Australian feature film (including documentary) and television, has experienced significant change since the turn of the century. In contrast to much scholarship before 2000, the contemporary critical project is rarely limited solely to evaluating the Australianness of Australian content within the national cinema paradigm. Approaches to Australian film and television are necessarily diverse, less concerned with totalising narratives around a national imaginary and with problematising national discourses than they are with responding to current trends and configurations in texts, production, distribution, exhibition and consumption. With a specific focus on the years from 2000 to 2015, this collection offers coverage of the diversity of Australian screen during this period.

Despite a preoccupation with Hollywood studio films in blockbuster studies, the blockbuster movie is not exclusive to Hollywood. Whilst the principal characteristics of the Hollywood blockbuster can take on new meaning in different national production systems, they nevertheless provide a useful framework for distinguishing ‘local’ examples. Drawing on blockbuster studies, this chapter delineates peculiarities in defining high-budget movies in the Australian context, and attempts to understand how high-budget movies are currently discussed in the literature on Australian international cinema. This chapter then examines high-budget Australian movies released between 2000 and 2015, including Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), The Great Gatsby (2013), Knowing (2009), Australia (2008), Happy Feet (2006) and Moulin Rouge! (2001), through the lens of their size and scale, superlative status, spectacle and release strategy.

This paper presents a comprehensive formal security framework for key derivation functions (KDF). The major security goal for a KDF is to produce cryptographic keys from a private seed value where the derived cryptographic keys are indistinguishable from random binary strings. We form a framework of five security models for KDFs. This consists of four security models that we propose: Known Public Inputs Attack (KPM, KPS), Adaptive Chosen Context Information Attack (CCM) and Adaptive Chosen Public Inputs Attack(CPM); and another security model, previously defined by Krawczyk [6], which we refer to as Adaptive Chosen Context Information Attack(CCS). These security models are simulated using an indistinguisibility game. In addition we prove the relationships between these five security models and analyse KDFs using the framework (in the random oracle model).

In vitro wear data were determined for nine experimental composites and compared with two-year clinical data. The in vitro tests included single-pass wear and two-body abrasion. The in vivo data were obtained between 1978 and 1980 for 54 class 2 posterior composite restorations in 25 patients. Correlations between the in vitro and in vivo data were found with values of α less than 0.08.

The forthcoming NIST’s Advanced Hash Standard (AHS) competition to select SHA-3 hash function requires that each candidate hash function submission must have at least one construction to support FIPS 198 HMAC application. As part of its evaluation, NIST is aiming to select either a candidate hash function which is more resistant to known side channel attacks (SCA) when plugged into HMAC, or that has an alternative MAC mode which is more resistant to known SCA than the other submitted alternatives. In response to this, we perform differential power analysis (DPA) on the possible smart card implementations of some of the recently proposed MAC alternatives to NMAC (a fully analyzed variant of HMAC) and HMAC algorithms and NMAC/HMAC versions of some recently proposed hash and compression function modes. We show that the recently proposed BNMAC and KMDP MAC schemes are even weaker than NMAC/HMAC against the DPA attacks, whereas multi-lane NMAC, EMD MAC and the keyed wide-pipe hash have similar security to NMAC against the DPA attacks. Our DPA attacks do not work on the NMAC setting of MDC-2, Grindahl and MAME compression functions.

A profiling ELISA was developed to detect antibody to the non-structural (NS) proteins Lb, 2C, 3A, 3D, and the polyprotein 3ABC, of foot-and-mouth disease vir us (FMDV). The assay was used to examine panels of sera from naive cattle, and from experimentally infected or vaccinated animals. All sera from cattle experimentally infected with any of the seven serotypes of FMDV were positive for antibody to 2C, 3A, 3D and 3ABC, and the majority were positive for Lb. The three categories of sera could be differentiated on the basis of the presence or absence of antibody to the structural and/or NS proteins of FMDV. The assay is simple, rapid and reproducible and can be used to identify previous infection in animals which are seropositive for antibody to the structural proteins of the virus. Validating the assay with field sera demonstrated that antibody to 3ABC, and usually one or more of the other non-structural proteins, was detected only in animals reported to have shown clinical signs of FMD. Vaccinated cattle which had received less than five vaccinations, were frequently positive for antibody to 3D but were negative for antibody to 3ABC. Occasional animals which had received more than ten vaccinations had NS protein antibody profiles which were similar to those seen following infection.

Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) cDNA cassettes containing sequences encoding the capsid precursor P1-2A with and without those encoding the proteases L and 3C were introduced into Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcMNPV) expression vectors. Procapsid proteins 1AB, 1C and 1D were produced in cells infected with recombinant baculoviruses, when L and 3C were present in the constructs, indicating that these FMDV proteases were active in insect cells. Unlike P1 processing in poliovirus, which has been shown to be catalysed mainly by the 3CD gene product, the 3C protease of FMDV was able to process P1 independently of 3D. Cytotoxicity of the L protease for insect cells prevented the use of the optimized transfer vector, pAcRP23, for inserting L-containing cassettes into AcMNPV. By contrast, viable AcMNPV-FMDV recombinants could be made without restriction on choice of the transfer vector when the L gene was either not expressed or inactivated by an inframe deletion. In the latter case, normal cleavage at the L-P1 junction no longer occurred in cis, and a new processing event, probably catalysed by 3C, was observed within the C-terminal region of the residual L protein. Analysis of baculovirus-expressed products in sucrose gradients showed that a fraction of the capsid proteins is present in an aggregated form, migrating at 70S and possibly resembling FMDV empty capsid particles.
