Abstract

Opuntia spp. (forage cactus or spineless cactus) is a plant native to Mexico that is commonly used as alternative nutrient-rich fodder in semi-arid regions. Due to its resistance to drought, forage cactus has become an important least-cost ingredient for formulating balanced rations for ruminants during times of scarcity. In addition, ensiling, an anaerobic fermentation process, is also a strategy used to allow a supply of bulky food all year round, since it conserves forage and maintains its nutritional value. In this sense, using the Scopus database and the visualization tool VOSviewer, the present work proposes a bibliometric analysis of forage cactus silage to track and map the evolution and main issues in the research field, current trends, and future directions. The results revealed that the first publication was in 2013; and since 2020, the number of publications has been growing. Brazil was highlighted, by far, as the most relevant country on the topic, and the top institutions were from northeast Brazil, which has been working on co-authored articles. The current hot research topics are focusing on the mixed silage of forage cactus and other forages such as gliricidia, maniçoba, and sorghum biomass, as well as evaluating the fermentative performance and chemical characteristics for improving ruminal diets, especially for goats and sheep. This study provides important information for researchers to identify gaps and direct their studies to better use the whole potential of forage cactus as an alternative roughage source. The coconut tree (Cocos nucifera) stands as a pivotal resource in tropical regions, playing a crucial role in both subsistence and economic activities across Asia, the Pacific Islands, and South America. While the harvesting of coconut fruit is essential for producing globally utilized edible products, such as coconut oil, by small owners and large producers around the world in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries, concerns have arisen due to the substantial amount of agro-industrial residue generated in this process, posing environmental risks if they are not properly managed. Recognizing the environmental challenges, this paper emphasizes the transformative potential inherent in coconut waste, characterized by its lignocellulosic composition rich in lignin and multifunctional groups. By delving into the historical context of coconut economic exploration and its chemical composition, this review explores the diverse applications of coconut products, focusing on the utilization and processing of residues to generate sustainable products and byproducts. Ultimately, this comprehensive review underscores the significance of repurposing coconut waste, not only to mitigate the environmental impact but also as a valuable contributor to a circular economy, promoting the use of the lignocellulosic biomass in research and bolstering its role as a raw material in the chemical and energy sectors. Abstract

The study aims to identify the determinants of the degree of innovation of industries listed on the Brazilian Stock Exchange - B3. To this end, it used as sample 129 industries that trade their shares on the B3. From the principal component analysis, it was found that the innovation indicators are combined into two distinct factors. Therefore, it can be said that the degree of innovation of the firms takes into account the combination of indicators referring to the innovation strategies of exploitation and exploration, and, by encompassing two distinct factors, it is valid to mention that the degree of innovation has a two-dimensional character, suggesting the existence of a synergy between the innovation strategies.

Abstract

The reuse of agro-industrial waste has been a recurring issue since the 20th century. With a composition rich in carbohydrates and because of the massive amount of residue produced daily all over the world, corncob became a low-cost and suitable substrate to produce high added-value compounds. Biosurfactants are bioproducts of versatile applications due to their chemical structure with hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions. The current work performed a bibliometric analysis to identify research related to the synthesis of biosurfactants using corncob as substrate. Despite the high availability of corncobs, only nine articles were found in Scopus and Web of Science using different pretreatment processes and microorganisms. After an initial screening, data regarding research organizations, scientific journals, citations, countries, institutions, and keywords were analyzed. Results indicated that corncobs were also used to produce enzymes, adsorbents, activated carbon, and furfural. The presented evaluation updated the status of art, identifying a serious need for more research, especially because of corncob's high potential to provide fermentable sugars and the wide range of variables influencing fermentation processes that still need to be studied. A future association of this low-cost substrate with other methods can result in a promising scenario for technology transference. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Using agro-industry residues as an energy source has been essential to replacing traditional fuels and developing resilient and sustainable socio-economic scenarios. The present work uses sunflower stem and corn cob as pyrolysis feedstocks to track the thermochemical synthesis of the renewable energy products bio-oil, biogas, and biochar and their relation to biomass components. Characterization and thermal degradation of biomass samples were provided by determining the elemental and lignocellulosic composition and thermogravimetric analysis. The three main products from pyrolysis conducted at 500 °C (biochar, bio-oil, and biogas) were evaluated for their yield, and the bio-oils were also characterized by Fourier transform infrared elementary analysis and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The obtained bio-oils showed similar profiles, presenting phenol and carboxylic acids as the major classes and the presence of alcohols and aldehydes. Therefore, outcomes allowed for understanding the thermal behavior of biomass components and the impact of different input materials on pyrolysis of product yield and properties.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Thaumatin‐like proteins (TLPs) are part of the pathogenesis‐related (PR) proteins that are important in host plant defense. TLPs have multiple defense functions against pathogens (bacteria, viruses, and fungi) and are involved in other biological processes of several living organisms. However, the biological role of TLPs must be elucidated for other species, such as Phaseolus lunatus, popularly known as lima bean. In this study, we propose to investigate the biological activity of TLPs in P. lunatus, which can help develop a detailed functional characterization of the TLP gene in other crop cultures. As a result, a total of 31 PlTPLs genes and 16 highly conserved cysteine residues for each family member were identified in the lima bean genome. Regarding phylogenetic analysis, 128 TLPs from different plant species, including P. lunatus, were used, and the phenetic tree revealed that the TLPs could be divided into six groups. The leading group was Group 4, containing 34 TLPs; the smallest was Group 7, containing only a single TLP. The analysis of antimicrobial and antiviral activity revealed that 27 PlTLPs have antimicrobial activity and 7 PlTLPs have potential antiviral activity. For chromosomal distribution of the PlTLPs, 8 of 11 chromosomes presented at least one PlTLs on one of the chromosomes. Finally, molecular modeling was carried out between two TLPs (PlTLP5 and PlTLP14), which presented antimicrobial and antiviral activity and did not have allergenic activity. The results showed that the two candidates presented ≥90% of their residues in the favorable regions and ∼10% in the permitted regions, demonstrating that the two PlTLPs are considered promising targets for biotechnological applications, especially those related to the genetic improvement of agricultural crops and the development of antimicrobial agents. Para isso variados estudos comparativos serão realizados considerando a grande necessidade do uso integral desses resíduos para o desenvolvimento de novos produtos ou novos processos de viabilidade comercial.
