Abstract Background Failure to restore missing teeth in time can easily lead to the mesial tilting of the distal abutment teeth. However, a fixed partial denture (FPD) can improve stress conduction and distribution and prevent periodontal injuries. In these more complex cases, it is necessary to consider various factors comprehensively to improve conventional treatment planning and achieve better results. Methods We selected a patient with a missing first molar and a mesial inclination of the second molar, leaving inadequate space or bone mass for implant denture restoration, necessitating an FPD for restoration. Three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA) combined with photoelastic analysis were used to explore how the inclination angle (0 ‒ 30°) and different dental restoration materials (zirconia, lithium disilicate, polymer-infiltrated ceramic network, and resin composite) affect the biomechanical behaviour of FPD‒abutments‒periodontal tissue complex. Results The stress was easily concentrated in the FPD connectors, enamel shoulder collar, periapical area, and root bifurcation. The stress on FPD and the periodontal ligament (PDL) of the second premolar increased with an increase in the elastic modulus of FPD, with an opposite trend in the abutments, the alveolar bone, and the PDL of the second molar. The stress on the FPD and alveolar bone increased with increased inclination angle of the distal abutment. The stress on two abutments and their PDL were positively correlated with the inclination angle in two stages; however, when the inclination angle > 12°, the second premolar and its PDL showed a negative correlation. Conclusions FPDs can be used for restoration within 24° of distal abutment inclination, but protecting the abutments ( 12° especially) must be taken seriously. For this purpose, an FPD material with higher strength is recommended.

With the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and a deepening understanding of disasters, resilience has received widespread attention in urban drainage systems. The studies on the resilience assessment of urban drainage systems are mostly indirect assessments that did not simulate human behavior affected by rainfall or semi-quantitative assessments that did not build simulation models, but few research characterizes the processes between people and infrastructure to assess resilience directly. Our study developed a dynamic model that integrates urban mobility, flood inundation, and sewer hydrodynamics processes. The model can simulate the impact of rainfall on people's mobility behavior and the full process including runoff generation, runoff entering pipes, node overflow, flood migration, urban mobility, and residential water usage. Then, we assessed the resilience of the urban drainage system under rainfall events from the perspectives of property loss and urban mobility. The study found that the average percentage increase in commuting time under different return periods of rainfall ranged from 6.4 to 203.9%. Calculating the annual expectation of property loss and traffic obstruction, the study found that the annual expectation loss in urban mobility is 9.1% of the annual expectation of property loss if the rainfall is near the morning commuting peak. Abstract To assess the agreement and repeatability of scotopic pupil size measurement using 2WIN-S (Adaptica, Padova, Italy) portable refractor in Chinese adults. This prospective non-randomized open-label controlled study assessed the scotopic pupil size of 100 right eyes using OPD-Scan III (Optical path difference) (Nidek Technologies, Gamagori, Japan) and 2WIN-S. OPD-Scan III and 2WIN-S measure pupil size using infrared light and detector, while 2WIN-S measures bilateral eyes simultaneously, OPD-Scan III measures unilateral eyes individually. Participants were first measured once using OPD-Scan III and two consecutive measurements were performed using 2WIN-S after 15 min of rest interval. The primary outcome was to evaluate the agreement between 2WIN-S and OPD-Scan III, and the secondary outcome was to evaluate the repeatability of 2WIN-S. Scotopic pupil size of 100 right eyes of 100 adults (28 male and 72 female) aged 18–53 years (mean 36 ± 12 years) was assessed using OPD-Scan III and 2WIN-S, respectively. The mean scotopic pupil size of OPD-Scan III and 2WIN-S was recorded to be 6.24 ± 0.88 mm and 6.27 ± 0.81 mm, respectively. For the mean scotopic pupil size of OPD-Scan III and 2WIN-S the difference was − 0.03 mm (95%CI − 0.10 to 0.04 mm), p = 0.445, the 95% limits of agreement (LOA) was − 0.71 to 0.66 mm. ICC between the two devices was 0.92 (95% CI 0.88–0.94) (ICC > 0.9 indicates excellent consistency). Coefficients of repeatability (CoR) of 2WIN-S was 0.37, which has a high repeatability. For the mean scotopic pupil size of 2WIN-S of the repeated measurements, the difference was -0.04 mm (95%CI − 0.08 to 0.01 mm), p = 0.019, the 95% limits of agreement (LOA) was − 0.41 to 0.32 mm, with a narrow LOA. However, the majority of the variations were less than ± 0.50 mm (98% of scotopic pupil size measurements were below this threshold), within the clinically acceptable range (± 0.50 mm). Our study showed excellent agreement between 2WIN-S and OPD-Scan III (ICC > 0.9) and a good repeatability of 2WIN-S (CoR = 0.37). This study suggests a novel technique for measuring pupillary responses in low light conditions, which can be considered an alternative to OPD-Scan III in clinical settings.

Driven by increasing water demand, scarcity concerns, and climate change impacts, numerous countries prioritize solutions for enhanced water use efficiency. However, these solutions often focus primarily on managing water quantities to improve water productivity in agriculture, urban, and industrial sectors. Effective and sustainable water use, however, requires monitoring and management of both water quantity and quality. Traditionally, water quantity and water quality have been managed separately, often by different government agencies with different missions and limited interaction. Ensuring sufficient water quantity for agriculture and food production often takes precedence over managing water quality. Water accounting, as a tool for allocating and managing water quantity is now widely accepted and numerous examples of successful implementation exist worldwide. However, the concept of incorporating water quality into water accounting has not yet been widely promoted. Measuring both quantity and quality in the same water bodies is a fundamental principle of assessment of impacts on water quality through the determination of loads. The load is the amount of a given substance or pollutant for a given period of time. Using the key steps necessary for the development of a water quality monitoring and assessment programme, a framework has been developed that can be applied to water accounting projects using typical water accounting applications. Two examples of potential applications are used to consider the technical, institutional, and financial requirements. Implementing a framework for incorporating water quality monitoring and assessment into water accounting should contribute substantially to the need for more water quality data at global scale. Such data are required to facilitate achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all” through more efficient water resources management and greater awareness of water quality impacts in the agricultural water use sector.

Abstract Urban green technology innovation (UGTI) is strongly tied to environmental regulations, which can successfully balance economic and environmental benefits. Selecting the panel data for 280 Chinese cities during 2006–2019, we take the energy saving and emission reduction (ESER) demonstration city policy as a quasi-natural experiment, then employ the difference-in-differences model to examine the effect and its mechanisms of ESER policy on UGTI. Empirical results show that the ESER policy can significantly promote UGTI, especially in the western region, the northern region, and cities with weak government environmental attention. At the same time, China’s ESER policy has a stronger promoting effect on UGTI in cities where environmental targets are more stringent. Mechanism analysis shows that the policy mainly promotes UGTI through two channels: increasing the proportion of science and technology expenditure in fiscal expenditure and upgrading the structure of the industry. In addition, we find that the development of UGTI has positive environmental effects by lowering carbon emissions and air pollution. The findings not only enrich the literature on environmental regulation policies and UGTI at the theoretical level, but also provide references for policymakers to specific implementation methods in further enforcing environmental regulation policies to improve UGTI.

In this study, mango core-shell cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were prepared successfully after hypochlorite bleaching, alkalization TEMPO oxidation and high pressure homogenization. The effects of pH and ionic strength on emulsion stability were also investigated. The results showed that the mango core-shell CNFs prepared by TEMPO oxidation and high pressure homogenization method maintained the basic structure of cellulose, and some hydroxyl groups were oxidized to carboxyl group. The cellulose crystallinity was reduced to 57%, which was more sensitive to temperature, but still maintained high thermal stability. The particle size of Pickering emulsion stabilized by mango core-shell CNFs decreased significantly with the increase of pH. The smallest particle size was 469.5 nm at pH11, and the particle size distribution was more uniform. The 30 day CI was 58.8%, showing good stability. The ionic strength had a great influence on the stability of mango core-shell CNFs Pickering emulsion. Under the ionic strength of 50~100 mmol/L, a large number of positively charged sodium ions aggregated on the surface of CNFs and neutralize the negative charge on the surface, which weakened the electrostatic repulsion between droplets and makes droplets more likely to aggregate, which was not conductive to the stability of the emulsion. In summary, the mango core-shell CNFs could be used as excellent solid particles in Pickering emulsion, which would provide a new for the high value utilization of mango core-shell.

Hemorrhoid disease is a common anorectal disorder affecting populations worldwide, with high prevalence, treatment difficulties, and considerable treatment costs. Compared to other treatment options, medical therapy for hemorrhoids offers minimal harm, more dignity to patients, and is more economical. Unfortunately, there are few chemical hemorrhoid medications available clinically, which makes the search for efficacious, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly new medication classes a focal point of research. In this context, searching for available natural products to improve hemorrhoids exhibits tremendous potential. These products are derived from nature, predominantly from plants, with a minor portion coming from animals, fungi, and algae. They have excellent coagulation pathway regulation, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and tissue regeneration activities. Therefore, we take the view that they are a class of potential hemorrhoid drugs, prevention products, and medication add-on ingredients. This article first reviews the factors contributing to the development of hemorrhoids, types, primary symptoms, and the mechanisms of natural products for hemorrhoids. Building on this foundation, we screened natural products with potential hemorrhoid improvement activity, including polyphenols and flavonoids, terpenes, polysaccharides, and other types.

BackgroundUrachal tumors are exceedingly rare, and adenocarcinoma is the most common malignant urachal neoplasm. Here, an especially rare patient of primary urachal leiomyosarcoma from our hospital was reported, and only five patients have been reported thus far since 1981.Case descriptionA 24-year-old man was admitted due to urinary tract symptoms. Both urogenital ultrasonography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a mass at the dome of the urinary bladder. Laparoscopic surgical resection was performed, and histopathologic examination of the mass confirmed the diagnosis of urachal leiomyosarcoma. No recurrence was noted after one and a half years.ConclusionsBecause the leiomyosarcoma located in the extraperitoneal space of Retzius and may manifest with nonspecific abdominal or urinary symptoms, early and definitive preoperative diagnosis is challenging. Partial cystectomy with complete excision of the urachus is recommended. Because only a few patients have been recorded, clinical outcomes and recurrence risks are difficult to assess.

Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is a common clinical condition that can be caused by a variety of reasons. Bleeding can occur anywhere in the GI tract, and it usually presents as vomiting of blood, melena or black stools. We herein present a case of a 48-year-old man who was ultimately diagnosed with perforation of the lower ileum, pseudoaneurysm of the right common iliac artery, lower ileum-right common iliac artery fistula, and pelvic abscess caused by accidental ingestion of a toothpick. This case suggests that accidental ingestion of a toothpick may also be the cause of GI bleeding in some patients. For patients with unexplained GI bleeding, especially those with small bowel bleeding, a rational and combined use of gastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, unenhanced and contrast-enhanced abdominal CT can help detect the causes of GI bleeding and improve diagnostic accuracy.

In communication links, the presence of atmospheric turbulence leads to crosstalk between the orbital angular momentum (OAM) states, thereby limiting the performance of information transmission. Thus, knowledge of the effect of turbulence on the spiral spectrum (also named the OAM spectrum) is of utmost importance in the field of optical communications. However, most of the existing studies are limited to weak turbulence calculation models. In this paper, based on the extended Huygens–Fresnel integral, the analytical expression is derived for the mutual coherence function of a Laguerre–Gaussian beam carrying the cross-phase and propagating through weak-to-strong anisotropic Kolmogorov atmospheric turbulence; subsequently, the analytical expression is used to study the behavior of the spiral spectrum. The discrepancies in the spiral spectrum between weak and strong turbulence are comparatively studied. The influences of the cross-phase and the anisotropy of turbulence on the spiral spectrum are investigated through numerical examples. Our results reveal that the cross-phase determines the distribution of the spiral spectrum. The spiral spectrum can be tuned to multiple OAM modes through the adaptation of the cross-phase coefficient. Moreover, increasing the cross-phase coefficient can reduce both the discrepancies of the spiral spectrum under two computational methods and the effects of the anisotropic factors of turbulence on the spiral spectrum.

The polyphenols and antioxidant activities of different mango cultivars were studied. Polyphenols from four commercial mango (Ivory, Yu, Zihua and Sannian) mango kernels were extracted, determined and analyzed statistically. The results showed that mango kernel contained abundant polyphenolic compounds and had good antioxidant activity. Among them, the content of polyphenol in Zihua mango kernel was the highest and its antioxidant activity was the strongest, followed by Ivory mango kernel and Sannian mango kernel, and that in Yu mango kernel was the worst. There were great differences in the extracts of mango kernels among the four cultivars, which were easy to distinguish, and there was a positive correlation between the determination indexes. Polyphenols and dietary fiber can form complexes through their interactions. In order to investigate the interaction mechanism between polyphenols and dietary fibers, and the structure and morphology of complexes formed by them, this paper selected epigallocatechin gallate and oat β-glucan as the raw materials for the preparation of the complexes and their structural characterization. The results indicated that the formation of the complex of EGCG and oat β-glucan was related to the concentration and pH of EGCG, EGCG and oat β-glucan could form a complex with a particle size of 1.7 μm and a relatively uniform particle size (dispersion coefficient 0.38) in an aqueous solution with a mass ratio of 0.8:1 and pH5. Through transmission electron microscopy, the formation of regular spherical particles between EGCG and BG were clearly observed. Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) measurement was used to characterize the EGCG-BG complex. The binding mechanism at 25 °C clearly provided that the binding between EGCG and BG were mainly non-covalent interaction (such as hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction). The above experimental results could indicate that EGCG and BG could spontaneously form a complex through non-covalent interactions. In summary, the findings of this study would provide a theoretical reference and research basis for the use of different polyphenol-oat β-glucan complexes as functional food ingredients or as bioactive materials.

Cellulose nanocrystalline (cncs) were prepared from bagasse as raw material to stabilize the Pickering emulsion to examine the effect of pH and ionic strength on emulsion stability. The results showed that the CNCs obtained by hydrolysis had a length of about 120 nm and a crystallinity of 70%. The particle size of the Pickering emulsion stabilized by CNCs decreased with the increase of the pH value of the preparation conditions. Under the condition of pH 11, the emulsion was relatively uniform due to deprotonation. In addition, the particle size of the Pickering emulsion stabilized by CNCs increased with the concentration of salt ions. At a concentration of 100 mmol/L, the electrostatic repulsion reduced due to the electrostatic shielding effect of salt ions, the emulsion broke, and the layering became more obvious. The experimental results showed that bagasse CNCs had potential in preparing Pickering emulsion as solid particles, and would provide new ideas for the utilization of bagasse.

Many solutions for imaging through a scattering medium are sensitive to noise, which can lead to degradation or even to a failure of the image quality. This is especially the case in practical application scenarios, which are always filled with changing ambient light interference; as such, the traditional methods are difficult to practically apply. Therefore, in this paper, a spatial-frequency dual-domain learning neural network is designed for reconstructing the target of a speckle pattern under different intensities of ambient light interference. The network is mainly based on two modules. One module is designed from two perspectives, frequency domain denoising and the spatial-frequency spectrum of the speckle pattern. Another module is a dual-feature fusion attention module, which is used to improve the accuracy of the network. The experimental results demonstrate that the network is capable of reconstructing complex targets with high quality under varying intensities of interfering light. Furthermore, it is not constrained by the optical memory effect, exhibiting remarkable robustness and generalizability. The research based on this paper provides a feasible path for the practical application of scattering imaging methods.

Abstract Background Commitment of mouse dental papilla cells (mDPCs) to the odontoblast lineage is critical for dentin formation, and this biological process is regulated by a complex transcription factor network. The transcription factor Mycn is a proto-oncogene that plays an important role in tumorigenesis and normal embryonic development. An early study revealed that Mycn is exclusively expressed in dental mesenchymal cells at E15.5, which implies a potential role of Mycn in dentinogenesis. However, the role of Mycn in dentin formation remains elusive. Thus, it is of considerable interest to elucidate the role of Mycn in dentin formation. Methods Mycn fl/fl ; Osr2 IresCre (Mycn Osr2 ) and Mycn fl/fl ; K14 Cre (Mycn K14 ) transgenic mice were generated, and micro-CT scans were performed to quantitatively analyse the volumetric differences in the molars and incisors of the mutants and their littermates. Mycn was also knocked down in vitro, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and alizarin red staining (ARS) were conducted. Cleavage under targets and tagmentation (CUT&Tag) analysis and dual luciferase assays were performed to identify direct downstream targets of Mycn. Immunofluorescence and immunochemistry staining and western blotting (WB) were performed to analyse the expression levels of potential targets. Quantitative PCR, WB, ALP and ARS were performed to test the rescue efficiency. Results Mesenchymal ablation of Mycn (Mycn Osr2 ) led to defective dentin formation, while epithelial deletion (Mycn K14 ) had no obvious effects on tooth development. ALP and ARS staining revealed that the commitment capacity of mDPCs to the odontoblast lineage was compromised in Mycn Osr2 mice. CUT&Tag analysis identified Klf4 as a potential direct target of Mycn, and a dual luciferase reporter assay verified that Mycn could bind to the promotor region of Klf4 and directly activate its transcription. Reciprocally, forced expression of Klf4 partially recovered the odontoblastic differentiation capacity of mDPCs with Mycn knockdown. Conclusions Our results elucidated that mesenchymal Mycn modulates the odontoblastic commitment of dental papilla cells by directly regulating Klf4. Our study illustrated the role of Mycn in dentin development and furthers our general comprehension of the transcription factor networks involved in the dentinogenesis process. Thus, these results may provide new insight into dentin hypoplasia and bioengineered dentin regeneration.

Abstract Background Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a genetically heterogeneous disease with 89 causative genes identified to date. However, only approximately 60% of RP cases genetically solved to date, predicating that many novel disease-causing variants are yet to be identified. The purpose of this study is to identify novel variants in PDE6A and PDE6B genes and present its phenotypes in patients with retinitis pigmentosa in Chinese families. Methods Five retinitis pigmentosa patients with PDE6A variants and three with PDE6B variants were identified through a hereditary eye disease enrichment panel (HEDEP), all patients’ medical and ophthalmic histories were collected, and ophthalmological examinations were performed, followed by an analysis of the possible causative variants. Sanger sequencing was used to verify the variants. Results We identified 20 variants in eight patients: 16 of them were identified in either PDE6A or PDE6B in a compound heterozygous state. Additional four heterozygous variants were identified in the genes ADGRA3, CA4, OPTN, RHO. Two novel genetic changes in PDE6A were identified (c.1246G > A and c.1747 T > A), three novel genetic changes in PDE6B were identified (c.401 T > C, c.2293G > C and c.1610-1612del), out of the novel identified variants one was most probably non-pathogenic (c.2293G > C), all other novel variants are pathogenic. Additional variant was identified in CA4 and RHO, which can cause ADRP (c.243G > A, c.688G > A). In addition, a novel variant in ADGRA3 was identified (c.921-1G > A). Conclusions This study reveals novel and known variants in PDE6A and PDE6B genes in Chinese families with autosomal recessive RP, and expands the clinical and genetic findings of photoreceptor-specific enzyme deficiencies.

Cervical cancer is the most common gynecologic malignancy worldwide. Methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3) is involved in tumorigenesis; however, it is unclear whether METTL3 plays a potential role in regulating cisplatin (DDP) resistance. Therefore, the role of METTL3 in the regulation of cisplatin sensitivity in cervical cancer cells was determined. Our immunohistochemistry (IHC) data showed that METTL3 was highly expressed in para-cancerous compared with cervical cancer tissues. Furthermore, METTL3 overexpression inhibited viability and increased cisplatin sensitivity of cervical cancer cells in vitro. Overexpression of METTL3 inhibited tumor growth in vivo. IHC results showed that the receptor for advanced glycation and products (RAGE) had higher expression levels in cervical cancer tissues. RAGE downregulation increased cell sensitivity to cisplatin treatment. Moreover, the combination of FPS-ZM1 with cisplatin was more effective in inhibiting cell viability as compared with FPS-ZM1 or cisplatin only. Additionally, METTL3 reduced RAGE expression in cervical cancer cells. Overexpression of METTL3 downregulated RAGE expression and caused more sensitivity to cisplatin treatment in the SiHa-DDP cell line. METTL3 inhibited cell viability and increased apoptosis as well as enhanced the sensitivity of cisplatin via downregulating RAGE expression in cervical cancer cells.

A total of 511 topsoils and 139 deep soil samples were collected to analyze the distribution characteristics, regional differentiation factors, and contamination sources of Cd in Shantou City, and to assess its environmental, ecological, and human health risks. We used a combination of multivariate statistics and geostatistics to quantify the distribution and level of Cd contamination in the study area, and an absolute principal component scores–multiple linear regression model to resolve the sources of contamination and their contribution values, combined with the health risk model to assess the human health risk from each source. The result exhibited that the average value of soil Cd content was 0.100 mg/kg, which was lower than the threshold value of soil environmental quality standard, but higher than the 0.070 mg/kg background value of soil. The high-value areas of surface Cd content in the study area were distributed in the western, northern, and northeastern parts of Shantou, and the source of Cd in the soil was a mix of anthropogenic and natural contamination. The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of heavy metal Cd exposure pathways are: oral ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation. The human health risk posed by Cd is below the reference threshold, indicating that the Cd contents in the soil have no unacceptable health risk to the residents. Among industrial sources, natural sources, and unknown sources with potential carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks, natural sources were the main source of contamination for adults and children. Among the different soil types, paddy, and red soils had relatively high Cd content, and among the different soil-forming parent materials, the Cd content in soils developed on Quaternary sediments was significantly higher than that other parent materials. Among the different land use types, the Cd content of soil for construction land was the highest. This study provides a scientific foundation and reference for the prevention of soil Cd contamination in Shantou City and the analysis of soil contamination sources in areas with similar contamination patterns.

Nanoscale defects on the surface of ultra-precision optical elements seriously affect the beam quality in optical systems. In response to the challenge of detecting nanoscale defects on optical component surfaces, we propose a method for the detection and classification of various types of defects on optical component surfaces via reflection Mueller matrix spectroscopy (RMMS). Firstly, an electromagnetic scattering theoretical model for various types of defects on the surface of optical elements and the incident and scattered fields were established by combining the bidirectional reflection distribution function (BRDF) and the Rayleigh–Rice vector scattering theory. Then, the optimal conditions for RMMS measurements were determined by numerically simulating the BRDF. On this basis, the surface roughness and pockmarks of the optical test plate were simulated and analyzed via RMMS, and the results were verified experimentally; then, dirty particles and pockmarks above the surface of the optical element and subsurface bubble defects (SSBD) were simulated and analyzed via RMMS. The results showed that some elements of the Mueller matrix could significantly distinguish defects on the surface of the optical element with dimensions smaller than the visible wavelength, and the dimensions of various types of defects of the element could be inverted using the values of the Mueller matrix elements. This method provides a theoretical basis and reference for the detection and classification of various types of defects in precision optical components.

Amomum Tsaoko Crevost et Lemarie is a kind of spices and traditional Chinese medicines with great commercial value. Traditional treatment often uses essential oils from Amomum Tsaoko in aromatherapy. In this study, researchers analyzed the composition of steam-distilled essential oil from Amomum tsaoko (ATEO) and evaluated its potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. GC–MS identified a total of 33 volatile compounds, the majority of which were alcohol (1,8-cineole and nerol) and aldehyde ((2E)-2-decenal) compounds. Additionally, ATEO showed great anti-inflammatory activity in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages. ATEO markedly inhibited the nitric oxide (NO) release, and decreased the expression level of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, ATEO significantly reduced the expression of iNOS, COX-2, NF-κB p-p65 and p-ERK. These results suggested that ATEO has great anti-inflammatory activity in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells, which will facilitate the development of ATEO as a functional food.

Most of studies for hydrogen bonds focus on the static model especially between two polar atoms. In contrast, introducing the third polar atom may emerge the competitive hydrogen bonds, which would represent a distinct perspective to perturb the catalytic chemical transformation. Herein, we report quantum mechanics calculations and quasi-classical direct dynamics simulations that demonstrate a triangle form of proton accepters enabled by Cl− anion can afford diverse hydrogen bonds, which control the reactivity and selectivity of Rh catalyzed phenol functionalization. A redox mechanism for carbene insertions with notable ligand effect was discovered and supported by both calculations and the experimental kinetic isotopic effect. The quaternary ammonium additive can stabilize key oxonium ylide intermediates with O–H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds that inhibit the common O–H insertion and promote the carbene C–H insertion product. The nonclassical dynamic hydrogen bonds coupling with Rh complex dissociation may result in an intermediate shuttle of oxonium ylides, which unify the site-selective of the direct phenol functionalization.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a promising bioactive scaffold for bone regeneration because of their superior mechanical and biological properties. Vascularization is crucial in bone tissue engineering, and insufficient vascularization is a long-standing problem in tissue-engineered scaffolds. However, the effect of CNTs on vascularization is still minimal. In the current study, pristine single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were purified to prepare different ratios of SWNTs/EDC composites, and their surface morphology and physicochemical properties of SWNTs/EDC were studied. Furthermore, the effect of SWNTs/EDC on vascularization was investigated by inducing the differentiation of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) into vascular endothelial cell-like cells (VEC-like cells). Results showed that SWNTs/EDC composite was successfully prepared, and EDC was embedded in the SWNTs matrix and uniformly distributed throughout the composites. The AFM, FTIR spectra, and Raman results confirmed the formation of SWNTs/EDC composites. Besides, the surface topography of the SWNTs/EDC composites presents a rough surface, which may positively affect cell function. In vitro cell culture revealed that SWNTs and SWNTs/EDC composites exhibited excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity. The SWNTs/EDC composite at mass/volume ratios 1:10 had the best enhancement of proliferation and differentiation of BMSCs. Moreover, after culture with SWNTs/EDC composite, approximately 78.3% ± 4.2% of cultured cells are double-positive for FITC-UEA-1 and DiI-Ac-LDL double staining. Additionally, the RNA expression of representative endothelial cell markers VEGF, VEGF-R2, CD31, and vWF in the SWNTs/EDC composite group was significantly higher than those in the control and SWNTs group. With the limitation of our study, the results suggested that SWNTs/EDC composite can promote BMSCs differentiation into VEC-like cells and positively affect angiogenesis and bone regeneration.

Oat milk has become preferential because of its low calorie nature and high dietary fiber content, but its ability to “curdle” when mixed with tea can affect the consumer acceptability for oat milk tea. In this study, a model system for oat milk tea was made by combining oat milk and green tea extract to evaluate the impacts of the oat milk matrix and green tea extract concentration on the stability and polyphenol bioaccessibility. The stability analysis results showed that adding green tea extract to oat milk influenced the stability of the oat milk tea model systems. In contrast, the 3.0% fat oat milk tea model system exhibited a higher stability than the 1.5% fat oat milk tea model system. In simulated gastrointestinal digestive experiments, tea polyphenols in the oat milk tea model systems were relatively stable in oral and stomach digestive stages, while they clearly degraded in the small intestine digestive stage. Furthermore, the bioaccessibility of tea polyphenols was higher for the 3.0% fat oat milk tea model system than for the 1.5% fat oat milk tea model system, especially at low concentrations of green tea extracts (0.05%~0.25%). These results may provide a theoretical reference and data for the formulation of oat milk tea and the bioaccessibility of tea polyphenols in food matrices.

Abstract Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are featured with low toxicity, non‐trivial biocompatibility, and cell membrane penetration capability, which allow the constructions of nanoplatforms for biosensing and in vivo imaging. Interfacing CNCs and fluorescent materials into sensors/probes is thus highly topical and has received tremendous interest. This review covers the development of CNC extraction methods and, in particular, their impacts on the surficial properties of CNCs. Whereafter, recently reported strategies for fluorescent functionalizations of CNCs are summarized based on chemical modification, physical adsorption, or in situ growth. Choosing the most suitable strategy, according to the properties of both CNCs and fluorophores, for constructing fluorescent CNCs is also emphasized. With regard to applications of the fluorescent CNCs, this work focuses on the studies which have involved but not been limited to metal ion sensing, physiological pH detection, cell imaging, and tumor antiproliferation. Being aware of the highly flexible construction, appealing structural/optical properties, and outstanding performances in analysis/imaging, it is believed that CNCs are bound to be increasingly investigated in the future and widely applied in the biomedical area.

Light, one of the most important natural resources for plant species, significantly influences the biomass yield and nutrient uptake capacity in plants. Light sources with different spectra combinations can impact the bioavailability, toxicity, and solubility of heavy metals in soils by altering the concentrations and fractionations of soil dissolved organic matter (DOM). A series of light irradiation treatments were performed to evaluate the influence of red, yellow, and blue lights on the characteristics of DOM in the rhizosphere soils of Arabidopsis thaliana. The results showed that monochromatic red light significantly raised the levels of DOM and proportions of hydrophilic fractionations in the rhizosphere of A. thaliana relative to the control, while monochromatic blue light had the opposite effect. Moreover, the proportions of hydrophobic acid, which can mobilize Cd effectively, also raised with increasing doses of red light, which stimulated Cd mobilization. The application of yellow light not only increased the levels of hydrophobic acid in monochromatic red light treatment but also decreased the proportion of hydrophobic fractions in monochromatic blue light treatment, partially weakening the negative impacts of pure blue light on soil Cd activation. Moreover, DOM from the combined red, yellow, and blue lights resulted in a significantly stronger Cd extraction efficiency than the other light irradiation treatments, consequently enhancing the Cd phytoextraction efficiency of A. thaliana. The findings of this study demonstrated that a suitable light combination could enhance the phytoremediation effect of A. thaliana by activating soil Cd, and this method can be extrapolated to the real field, where light irradiation can be easily applied and modulated.

Yimucao has been used as an herbal medicine to treat gynecological diseases. Common genes of Yimucao active compounds were investigated using network pharmacology. The components and targets of Yimucao were retrieved from the TCMSP database. Cervical cancer targets were collected from GeneCards, TTD, DisGeNET, and KEGG. Cisplatin-related genes were downloaded from GeneWeaver. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was created using the STRING database. A drug-bioactive compound-disease-target network was constructed using Cytoscape. GO and KEGG analyses were performed to investigate common targets of quercetin and cisplatin in cervical cancer. We found that quercetin was the highly bioactive compound in Yimucao. The drug-bioactive compound-disease-target network contained 93 nodes and 261 edges. Drug-related key targets were identified, including EGFR, IL6, CASP3, VEGFA, MYC, CCND1, ERBB2, FOS, PPARG, and CASP8. Core targets were primarily related to the response to metal ions, cellular response to xenobiotic stimulus, and transcription factor complex. The KEGG pathway analysis revealed that quercetin and cisplatin may affect cervical cancer through platinum drug resistance and the p53 and HIF-1 pathways. Furthermore, quercetin combined with cisplatin downregulated the expression of EGFR, MYC, CCND1, and ERBB2 proteins and upregulated CASP8 expression in HeLa and SiHa cells. Functionally, quercetin enhanced cisplatin-induced anticancer activity in cervical cancer cells. Our results indicate that quercetin can be used to overcome cisplatin resistance in cervical cancer cells.

To form a stable emulsion system, the water-soluble proteins (WSPs) of Sipunculus nudus were prepared as the sole effective stabilizer for the high internal phase emulsion (HIPEs), of which the influence of the WSPs concentration and environmental stability was investigated. The HIPEs were fabricated using a simple one-pot homogenization process (10,000 rpm/min, 3 min) that involved blending the WSPs (0.1, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 wt%) with soybean oil (60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, and 90%). The microstructure and properties of stable HIPEs were characterized by particle size, ζ-potential, visual observations, optical microscopy, and dynamic rheology property measurements. As the concentration of WSPs increases, the mean particle diameter of HIPEs decreases, on the contrary, the apparent viscosity and storage modulus gradually increase. At a given emulsifier concentration (3 wt%), the stable and gel-like HIPEs were formed at the oil internal phase (ϕ) values of 70–75%, all the pH range in values from 3 to 9, and the ionic strength from 100 to 500 mM. Furthermore, the HIPEs that were stabilized formed a gel-like state that was relatively stable to heat and storage (30 days). And there was a new phenomenon that the destabilized HIPE of the freeze-thaw treatments could still return to a gel-like state again after homogenizing. The study results suggest that the WSPs of S. nudus as a natural emulsifier could be widely used in the food industry.

Tumor-associated angiogenesis is a key target for anti-cancer therapy. The imbalance between pro-angiogenic and anti-angiogenic signals elicited by tumor cells or tumor microenvironment always results in activating “angiogenic switch”. Tumor angiogenesis functions in multi-aspects of tumor biology, including endothelial cell apoptosis, tumor metastasis, and cancer stem cell proliferation. Numerous studies have indicated the important roles of inexpensive and less toxic natural products in targeting tumor angiogenesis-associated cytokines and apoptotic signaling pathways. Our current knowledge of tumor angiogenesis is based mainly on experiments performed on cells and animals, so we summarized the well-established models for angiogenesis both in vitro and in vivo. In this review, we classified and summarized the anti-angiogenic natural agents (Polyphenols, Polysaccharides, Alkaloids, Terpenoids, Saponins) in targeting various tumor types according to their chemical structures at present, and discussed the mechanistic principles of these natural products on regulating angiogenesis-associated cytokines and apoptotic signaling pathways. This review is to help understanding the recent progress of natural product research for drug development on anti-tumor angiogenesis.

Winegrape cultivation has become increasingly common throughout northwest China over the past 20 years, and such viticulture can profoundly impact the properties of the utilized soil and the associated soil microbial communities. To explore these effects in the present study, samples of soil were collected from control desert soil and from vineyards planted in different years: Cabernet Sauvignon (CS, 2014), Merlot (M, 2012), and Italian Riesling (IR, 2008). The properties of this soil and the microbial communities therein were assessed through a series of physicochemical, enzymatic, and high-throughput sequencing analyses. Compared to the control soil, respective 1033.06 U/g, 398.28 U/g, and 240.56 U/g increases in alkaline phosphatase activity levels were observed in the CS, M, and IR soil samples. Stable soil bacterial richness was observed in the control, CS, and M samples, but decreased in the 11-years old IR soil, whereas no noticeable changes in soil fungi were observed across these samples. The network analyses highlighted correlations among soil microbes, and soil organic carbon and microbial biomass carbon were found to strongly influence variability in these soil microbial communities. Overall, these findings thus provide strong evidence that the prolonged monoculture of winegrapes can contribute to the deterioration of soil quality.

W/O/W emulsions can be used to encapsulate both hydrophobic and hydrophilic bioactive as nutritional products. However, studies on protein stabilized gel-like W/O/W emulsions have rarely been reported, compared to the liquid state multiple emulsions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different oil–water ratios on the stability of W/O/W emulgels fabricated with salt-soluble proteins (SSPs) of Sipunculus nudus. The physical stability, structural characteristics, rheological properties, and encapsulation stability of vitamin C and β-carotene of double emulgels were investigated. The addition of W/O primary emulsion was determined to be 10% after the characterization of the morphology of double emulsion. The results of microstructure and rheological properties showed that the stability of W/O/W emulgels increased with the increasing concentration of SSPs. Additionally, the encapsulation efficiency of vitamin C and β-carotene were more than 87%, and 99%, respectively, and still could maintain around 50% retention of the antioxidant capacity after storage for 28 days at 4 °C. The aforementioned findings demonstrate that stable W/O/W emulgels are a viable option for active ingredients with an improvement in shelf stability and protection of functional activity.

Grape volatile compounds directly determine the aroma quality of wines. Although the aroma profile of grapes evolved greatly at different maturity stages, there were less considerations for aroma status when determining grape harvest time. In the present study, several maturation indicators, namely, sugars/acids ratio, free volatile compounds, bound volatile compounds and IBMP (3-isobutyl-2-methoxypyrazine) content were monitored in four red wine grape varieties (Vitis vinifera L. cv Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Gernischet, Cabernet Franc and Merlot) near harvest time (42 days) in Ningxia, China. The results showed that the highest sugars/acids ratio was reached on day 21 and day 28 for Merlot and the other three varieties, respectively. For both free and bound volatile compounds, the content of carbonyl compounds decreased continuously in the process of ripening. The contents of free alcohols, esters and terpenes increased in the ripening stage and decreased in the stage of over-ripening. The accumulation of favorable bound aroma compounds peaked at day 35. The content of IBMP presenting a green smell in all four varieties descended continuously and kept steady from day 28. Therefore, the present findings revealed that the best aroma maturity time of four studied grape varieties was later than the sugars/acids ratio in Ningxia region. Aroma maturity should be taken into account during harvest time determination.

Although isolated experimentally, the molecular structures of metal-containing boron nitride cages are still unknown. Here the authors show via DFT calculations that externally bound complexes of boron nitride fullerenes doped with a single titanium atom are strikingly more stable than the endohedral ones.

Malolactic fermentation (MLF) converts malic acid into lactic acid by lactic acid bacteria (LAB). MLF may affect potential wine quality impact as global warming intensifies, and the alcohol in the wine increases, which threatens MLF. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum is considered a new generation of MLF starter because of the ability of high ethanol tolerance and good enological characteristics. In this research, 132 LAB strains were isolated from the eastern foothills of Helan Mountain in Ningxia, China. Twenty-one higher ethanol tolerance isolates were obtained by 15% (v/v) ethanol preliminary screening. They were identified by 16S rRNA sequencing and differentiated by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Stress factors include ethanol, pH, and SO2, and the combination of stresses was used to screen stress-tolerance strains. β-D-glucosidase activity, MLF performance, and biogenic amine content were tested to evaluate the enological characteristics. GC-MS detected the volatile components of the wine after MLF. The results showed that twenty strains were identified as L. plantarum, and one strain was Lentilactobacillus hilgardii. Especially, the strains of A7, A18, A23, A50, and B28 showed strong resistance to high ethanol, low pH, and high SO2. A7, A50, and B28 showed better β-D-glucosidase activity and thus were inoculated into cabernet sauvignon wines whose ethanol content was 14.75% (v/v) to proceed MLF. A7 finished MLF in 36 d, while the control strains Oenococcus oeni 31-DH and L. plantarum BV-S2 finished MLF in 24 d and 28 d, respectively. Nevertheless, A50 and B28 did not finish MLF in 36 d. The data showed that A7 brought a more volatile aroma than control. Notably, the esters and terpenes in the wine increased. These results demonstrated the potential applicability of L. plantarum A7 as a new MLF starter culture, especially for high-ethanol wines.

Inhibition of activated macrophages is an alternative therapeutic strategy for asthma. We investigated whether a coumarin compound, osthole, isolated from Cnidiummonnieri (L.) Cuss, alleviated macrophage activation in vivo and in vitro. Osthole could reduce expression of a marker of activated macrophages, cluster of differentiation (CD)206, in an ovalbumin-challenge model of asthma in mice. Osthole could also inhibit infiltration of inflammatory cells, collagen deposition and production of proinflammatory cytokines [interleukin (IL)-1β, tumor necrosis factor-ɑ, macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF)] in asthmatic mice. In vitro, expression of phosphorylated-IĸBɑ, MIF and M2 cytokines (Ym-1, Fizz-1, arginase-1) in IL-4-induced macrophages decreased upon exposure to the NF-ĸB inhibitor MG-132. In our short hairpin (sh)RNA-MIF-knockdown model, reduced expression of M2 cytokines was detected in the IL-4 + shRNA-MIF group. Osthole could attenuate the proliferation and migration of an IL-4-induced rat alveolar macrophages line (NR8383). Osthole could reduce IL-4-induced translocation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-ĸB) in NR8383 cells. Collectively, our results suggest that osthole ameliorates macrophage activation in asthma by suppressing the NF-ĸB/MIF signaling pathway, and might be a potential agent for treating asthma.

Special-flavor Baijiu is a unique Baijiu in Jiangxi Province, China, whose uniqueness mainly depends on the unique production process of special-flavor Baijiu Daqu. However, the microbial structure and physicochemical indices of different parts of the special-flavor Baijiu Daqu are still unknown. This greatly reduces the actual value of Daqu in the production of special-flavor Baijiu. Therefore, culture-dependent and Illumina MiSeq sequencing methods were used to analyze the microbial structure of special-flavor Baijiu Daqu. The results indicated that there was a complicated microbial diversity in Chinese special-flavor Baijiu Daqu. The predominant bacterial communities were Bacillales, Lactobacillales, and Rhodospirillales, while Saccharomycetales and Eurotiales were the predominant fungal communities. Significant differences in microbial community and distribution were shown between the surface and central parts of Daqu. Acetobacter and Pichia genera were the predominant microorganisms in the surface part of Daqu, whereas Aspergillus, Kroppenstedtia, Oceanobacillus, and Bacillus genera were the predominant microorganisms in the central part of Daqu. Meantime, the different microbial distributions between the surface and central parts of Daqu caused the significant differences in the physicochemical indices. These results can provide an important theoretical basis for improving the brewing process and the quality of special-flavor Baijiu.

BackgroundPrevious studies have shown that metabolic dysfunction associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is associated with thyroid hormones (THs), immunity, and inflammation status, but few studies involved thyroid autoimmunity. This study aimed to evaluate the role of THs, thyroid autoantibodies, inflammatory biomarkers in MAFLD, its cofactors, and other possible determinants.Materials and MethodsIn the study, a total of 424 Chinese patients were selected and categorized as non-MAFLD and MAFLD. Serum thyroid hormone, thyroid autoantibody and high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels were measured. The data of blood pressure, the serum lipid profile, glucose and liver enzymes were collected. The differences and association between research findings were examined and analyzed by Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, One-Way ANOVA test and Multiple Logistic Regression models.ResultsThe study showed significant increase in the prevalence of MAFLD with high thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels (P < 0.01) and abnormal high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels (P < 0.01). The proportion of MAFLD patients decreased significantly with the rise of free thyroxine (FT4) (P = 0.04), thyrotropin receptor antibodies (TRAb) (P < 0.01), anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb) (P < 0.01), and thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) levels (P < 0.01). Based on logistic regression analysis, MAFLD was significantly associated with lower levels of TgAb (P < 0.01), TPOAb (P < 0.01), and higher levels of hsCRP (P < 0.01) in male. In female, elevated TgAb (P < 0.01) may be a protective factor, while higher levels of hsCRP (P < 0.01) showed increased risk of MAFLD. Logistic models were adjusted for age, BMI, SBP, DBP, FBG, ALT, AST, TC, TG, LDL, HDL.ConclusionsTaken together, TgAb may be a potential protective factor for MAFLD and elevated hsCRP level should be considered as an independent risk factor for MAFLD in both genders. TPOAb also demonstrated protective effect, but only in male. The prevalence of MAFLD increased with higher TSH levels and lower FT4, TRAb levels, but no significant association were found. However, Our findings provide a new insight into the pathogenesis of MAFLD by further investigating the impact of THs, thyroid autoimmunity, and inflammation on MAFLD patients.

Abstract The effects of different contents and particle sizes of waste glass powder on alkali–silica reaction (ASR) expansion of cementitious composite bar were investigated in this study. Waste glass powder with particle size less than 300 μm exhibits an excellent mitigation effect on ASR expansion. With larger content and smaller particle size, the mitigation effect of waste glass powder on ASR expansion gradually increases. The mitigation effect of waste glass powder with particle size ranging from 38 to 53 μm and 20% by weight of cement seems relatively better than that of fly ash. When the waste glass powder content reaches 30%, the mitigation effect is still effective and almost the same as that of fly ash. However, the waste glass powder with particle size larger than 300 μm presents negative mitigation effect on ASR expansion when the replacement rate is larger than 30%. On the other hand, the waste glass powder and calcium hydroxide (CH) further react, and produce more calcium–silicate–hydrate gels, which apparently reduce the amount of CH. Moreover, the increasing content of waste glass powder results in a lower pH value in the pore solution of cementitious composite.

Thymol has been applied as a spice and antibacterial agent in commercial products. However, the utilization of thymol in the food and pharmaceutical field has recently been limited by its poor water solubility and stability. In this work, a caseinate-stabilized thymol nanosuspension was fabricated by pH-driven methods to overcome those limitations. Firstly, the chemical stability of thymol at different pH value conditions was investigated. The physiochemical properties of thymol nanosuspensions were then characterized, such as average particle size, zeta potential, encapsulation efficiency, and loading capacity. Meanwhile, the X-ray diffraction results showed that thymol was present as an amorphous state in the nanosuspensions. The thermal stability of thymol was slightly enhanced by encapsulation through this process, and the thymol nanosuspensions were stable during the long-term storage, and the average particle size of nanosuspensions showed that there was no aggregation of nanosuspensions during storage and high temperature. Finally, the antimicrobial activity of thymol nanosuspensions was evaluated by investigating the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) against Salmomella enterca, Staphlococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Listeria monocytogenes. These results could provide useful information and implications for promoting the application of thymol in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical commercial products.

Naringenin and naringin are a class of hydrophobic polyphenol compounds and both have several biological activities containing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties. Nevertheless, they have low water solubility and bioavailability, which limits their biological activity. In this study, an easy pH-driven method was applied to load naringenin or naringin into nanoliposomes based on the gradual reduction in their water solubility after the pH changed to acidity. Thus, the naringenin or naringin can be embedded into the hydrophobic region within nanoliposomes from the aqueous phase. A series of naringenin/naringin-loaded nanoliposomes with different pH values, lecithin contents and feeding naringenin/naringin concentrations were prepared by microfluidization and a pH-driven method. The naringin-loaded nanoliposome contained some free naringin due to its higher water solubility at lower pH values and had a relatively low encapsulation efficiency. However, the naringenin-loaded nanoliposomes were predominantly nanometric (44.95–104.4 nm), negatively charged (−14.1 to −19.3 mV) and exhibited relatively high encapsulation efficiency (EE = 95.34% for 0.75 mg/mL naringenin within 1% w/v lecithin). Additionally, the naringenin-loaded nanoliposomes still maintained good stability during 31 days of storage at 4 °C. This study may help to develop novel food-grade colloidal delivery systems and apply them to introducing naringenin or other lipophilic polyphenols into foods, supplements or drugs.

To reduce subfertility caused by low semen quality and provide theoretical guidance for the eradication of human male infertility, we sequenced the bovine transcriptomes of round, elongated spermatids and epididymal sperms. The differential analysis was carried out with the reference of the mouse transcriptome, and the homology trends of gene expression to the mouse were also analysed. First, to explore the physiological mechanism of spermiogenesis that profoundly affects semen quality, homological trends of differential genes were compared during spermiogenesis in dairy cattle and mice. Next, Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment, protein–protein interaction network (PPI network), and bioinformatics analyses were performed to uncover the regulation network of acrosome formation during the transition from round to elongated spermatids. In addition, processes that regulate gene expression during spermiogenesis from elongated spermatid to epididymal sperm, such as ubiquitination, acetylation, deacetylation, and glycosylation, and the functional ART3 gene may play important roles during spermiogenesis. Therefore, its localisation in the seminiferous tubules and epididymal sperm were investigated using immunofluorescent analysis, and its structure and function were also predicted. Our findings provide a deeper understanding of the process of spermiogenesis, which involves acrosome formation, histone replacement, and the fine regulation of gene expression.

There is growing interest in developing biomaterial-coated liposome delivery systems to improve the stability and bioavailability of curcumin, which is a hydrophobic nutraceutical claimed to have several health benefits. The curcumin-loaded rhamnolipid liposomes (Cur-RL-Lips) were fabricated from rhamnolipid and phospholipids, and then chitosan (CS) covered the surface of Cur-RL-Lips by electrostatic interaction to form CS-coated Cur-RL-Lips. The influence of CS concentration on the physical stability and digestion of the liposomes was investigated. The CS-coated Cur-RL-Lips with RL:CS = 1:1 have a relatively small size (412.9 nm) and positive charge (19.7 mV). The CS-coated Cur-RL-Lips remained stable from pH 2 to 5 at room temperature and can effectively slow the degradation of curcumin at 80 °C; however, they were highly unstable to salt addition. In addition, compared with Cur-RL-Lips, the bioavailability of curcumin in CS-coated Cur-RL-Lips was relatively high due to its high transformation in gastrointestinal tract. These results may facilitate the design of a more efficacious liposomal delivery system that enhances the stability and bioavailability of curcumin in nutraceutical-loaded functional foods and beverages.

There is interest in incorporating nanoemulsions into certain foods and beverages, including dips, dressings, drinks, spreads, and sauces, due to their potentially beneficial attributes. In particular, excipient nanoemulsions can enhance the bioavailability of nutraceuticals in fruit- and vegetable-containing products consumed with them. There is, however, potential for them to also raise the bioavailability of undesirable substances found in these products, such as pesticides. In this research, we studied the impact of excipient nanoemulsions on the bioaccessibility of pesticide-treated tomatoes. We hypothesized that the propensity for nanoemulsions to raise pesticide bioaccessibility would depend on the polarity of the pesticide molecules. Bendiocarb, parathion, and chlorpyrifos were therefore selected because they have Log P values of 1.7, 3.8, and 5.3, respectively. Nanoemulsions with different oil contents (0%, 4%, and 8%) were fabricated to study their impact on pesticide uptake. In the absence of oil, the bioaccessibility increased with increasing pesticide polarity (decreasing Log P): bendiocarb (92.9%) > parathion (16.4%) > chlorpyrifos (2.8%). Bendiocarb bioaccessibility did not depend on the oil content of the nanoemulsions, which was attributed to its relatively high water-solubility. Conversely, the bioaccessibility of the more hydrophobic pesticides (parathion and chlorpyrifos) increased with increasing oil content. For instance, for chlorpyrifos, the bioaccessibility was 2.8%, 47.0%, and 70.7% at 0%, 4%, and 8% oil content, respectively. Our findings have repercussions for the utilization of nanoemulsions as excipient foods in products that may have high levels of undesirable non-polar substances, such as pesticides.

Altered S-nitrosothiols (RSNO) signaling is linked to pulmonary hypertension. Recent studies have shown that S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) reductase (GSNOR) catalyzes the degradation of GSNO and indirectly regulates the level of RSNO in vivo. Our present study tested the hypothesis that chronic hypoxia causes pulmonary hypertension, in part, by the change of GSNOR activity that contributes to the depletion of RSNO. Male mice were exposed to normobaric hypoxia in a ventilated chamber for 1 to 21 days or normoxia for 21 days. Right ventricular systolic pressure, right ventricle hypertrophy, and the number and media thickness of muscular pulmonary vessels increased significantly after 21 days of hypoxic exposure. Hypoxia induced the overexpression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase and inducible nitric oxide synthase. The mRNA expression of GSNOR decreased on day 1 of hypoxic exposure, but increased significantly on day 7 compared with the normoxic group. The protein expression of GSNOR increased significantly in the lung tissue after 7 days of hypoxic exposure and its enzymatic activities also increased. Both the ratios of glutathione to glutathione disulfide and nitrate to nitrite were significantly lower in the hypoxic groups than in the normoxic controls. The results suggest an increased GSNOR activity interfered with the metabolism of RSNO in mice with hypoxic pulmonary hypertension. An imbalanced of redox status is associated with the pathogenesis of hypoxic pulmonary hypertension.
