La costa del Desierto de Atacama se caracteriza por la ocurrencia de vientos fuertes del sur y suroeste. El clima árido, la geomorfología plana y las características granulométricas de los depósitos superficiales de la Pampa Mejillones, ubicada en la costa del norte de Chile (23°S), favorecen el estudio de los procesos de erosión y transporte eólico de partículas en este desierto costero. Mediciones in situ del flujo horizontal de partículas (G) y de vientos, junto con análisis sedimentológicos de la capa superficial de esta pampa, permitieron determinar los parámetros relevantes en el proceso de erosión y transporte eólico de partículas, así como estimar su estacionalidad. Se determinó un coeficiente de rugosidad superficial (z0) promedio del orden de 10-3 m, típico de planicies desérticas. Estacionalmente se observaron valores de G de hasta 2.100 g cm-1 mes-1 asociados a velocidades de fricción (u*) entre 0,4 y 0,5 m s-1 durante la primavera del año 2000. Resultados similares se obtuvieron para los años 1999 y 2001. La sedimentología (granulometría y textura superficial) y mineralogía de las partículas del suelo y del material capturado en las trampas de polvo, permitieron determinar que la fracción transportada está caracterizada principalmente por cuarzo y feldespatos, y modas granulométricas entre 75 y 1.000 um, similares a las observadas en los sedimentos cercanos y al sur (viento arriba) del área de captura. Los resultados obtenidos y la correlación preliminar entre los vientos medidos en distintas estaciones meteorológicas en la península de Mejillones, permiten establecer una relación directa entre el flujo horizontal de partículas hacia la bahía homónima y los vientos regionales del sur-suroeste, especialmente durante los meses de primavera y verano, en concomitancia con la intensificación de los vientos favorables a la surgencia costera en el área oceánica adyacente. The coast of the Atacama Desert is characterized by the occurrence of strong south- and southwesterly winds. The arid climate, fíat geomorphology and the characteristics of the superficial sediments on Pampa Mejillones, located in northern Chile (ca. 23°S), favor the study of eolian erosion and transport processes in this coastal desert. In situ measurements of the horizontal particle flux (G) and winds in the área, together with sedimentological analyses of the uppermost part of the pampa sediments, allowed determination of the significant parameters in the eolian erosión and particle transport process and its seasonality. A local surface roughness parameter (z0) of about 10-3 m was calculated, which is a typical value of desert plains. Seasonally, values of G up to 2,100 g cm-1 month-1 were observed, associated with friction velocities (u*) between 0,4 and 0,5 m s-1 during the spring of 2000. Similar results were obtained for the years 1999 and 2001. The sedimentology (granulometry and surface texture) and mineralogy of the surface and captured material in the dust traps show that the transported fraction is characterized mainly by quartz and feldspars, with grain-size modes between 75 and 1,000 um, similar to those observed in nearby soils and south (upwind) of the capture area. The results obtained and preliminary correlation of measured winds at the different meteorological stations on the Mejillones Península, indicate a direct relationship between the horizontal particle flux towards Mejillones Bay and the regional south-southwest winds, especially during spring and summer, simultaneous with the intensification of winds favoring coastal upwelling in the area.

Phytoplankton abundance in the surface mixed layer of the coastal ocean responds to environmental changes at various time scales. Here the "warm", "cold" and "neutral" phases of "three environmental cycles" have been jointly considered to assess chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) biomass variability for both the active and relaxed phases of the local, wind-driven coastal upwelling: (i) the interannual ENSO cycle (ii) the annual (seasonal) cycle and (iii) the intraseasonal cycle associated with equatorially-sourced, ocean trapped-waves along the coast in northern Chile. The main goal of this study is to quantitatively assess the variability of the depth- integrated Chl-a biomass in the euphotic zone (¾Chl-a) in terms of an overall "environmental condition" over a 50 km upwelling sensitive coastal strip, revisiting published and unpublished Chl-a ship (Cship = Chl-a + Phaeopigments) data. All possible "environmental conditions" combinations were further ranked into seven "environmental indices" ranging from 0 ("absolutely cold") to 6 ("absolutely warm"). Out of 332 samples of ¾Chl-a, 198/134 were obtained during active/relaxed upwelling conditions from which 24/38 and 30/36 samples were associated with the simultaneous occurrence of at least two "cold"/"warm" phases of the three environmental cycles ("cold"/"warm" environmental conditions), respectively. Lower ¾Chl-a values during "cold" and "warm" environmental conditions relative to the "neutral" ones reached statistical significance for both active and relaxed conditions (144/60 samples respectively). Higher turbulent mixing during "cold" environmental conditions and a deeper nutricline during "warm" ones would explain lower ¾Chl-a-values. Satellite chlorophyll (Csat) data obtained in clear skies (active upwelling only), showed a similar distribution to those of ¾Chl-a when classified into the corresponding "environmental indices". These results suggest that during "neutral" (transitional) "environmental conditions", nutrient supply, mean light exposure and mixing thresholds, including biological interactions, could be more effective in producing a higher phytoplankton biomass, in spite of a larger dispersion La abundancia de fitoplancton en la capa de mezcla superficial del océano costero responde a cambios ambientales en diferentes escalas de tiempo. Aquí se han considerado conjuntamente las fases "cálida", "fría" y "neutra" de "tres ciclos ambientales" para estimar la variabilidad de la biomasa de la clorofila (Chl-a) para las fases activa y relajada de la surgencia costera inducida por el viento local: (i) el ciclo interanual ENOS (ii) el ciclo anual (estacional) y (iii) el ciclo intraestacional asociado con ondas oceánicas atrapadas a lo largo de la costa en el norte de Chile. El objetivo principal de este estudio es estimar cuantitativamente la variabilidad de la Cl-a integrada en la zona eufótica (¾Chl-a) en términos de una "condición ambiental" conjunta, para la banda costera de 50 km sensible a la surgencia, reinterpretando datos in situ de Chl-a (Cship = Chl-a + Feo pigmentos) publicados y no publicados. Todas las combinaciones posibles de las "condiciones ambientales" se ordenaron en siete "indices ambientales" que van desde 0 ("absolutamente frío") a 6 ("absolutamente cálido"). Del total de 332 muestras de ¾Chl-a, 198/134 se obtuvieron en condiciones de surgencia activa/relajada, de las cuales 24/38 y 30/36 muestras estuvieron asociadas con al menos dos fases frías/cálidas, de los tres ciclos ambientales (condiciones ambientales "fría"/"cálida") respectivamente. Los menores valores de ¾Chl-a durante las condiciones ambientales "frías" y "cálidas" respecto de las "neutras" alcanzaron significancia estadística tanto en surgencia activa como relajada (144/60 muestras respectivamente). Una mayor mezcla turbulenta durante condiciones ambientales "frías" y una nutriclina más profunda durante las "cálidas" explicarían los menores valores de ¾Chl-a. Datos de clorofila satelital (Csat) obtenidos para cielos despejados (sólo surgencia activa), mostraron una distribución similar a los de la ¾Chl-a cuando se clasificaron dentro de los correspondientes "índices ambientales". Estos resultados sugieren que durante las condiciones ambientales "neutrales" (transicionales), el aporte de nutrientes, la exposición promedio a la luz y los umbrales de turbulencia, incluyendo interacciones biológicas, podrían ser más efectivos en producir una mayor biomasa fitoplanctónica, a pesar de una mayor dispersión

The physical forcing of the upwelling along the subtropical west coasts of the continents encompasses a broad range of time scales which shape both phytoplankton biomass (Chl-a) and primary productivity (carbon fixation) changes over any given time interval. The narrow continental shelf and the steep alongshore orography off north-central Chile provide for a unique combination of year-round, upwelling-favorable winds with quasi-weekly upwelling pulses associated with atmospheric coastal-trapped disturbances (coastal lows). This variability is modulated by intraseasonal oscillations in the depth of the thermo/nutricline, produced by coastal-trapped waves in the ocean, upon which annual (seasons) and interannual (ENSO) cycles are superimposed. During coastal field experiments off Cruz Grande bay (29º S), carried on in November 1987 and 1988 (opposite extremes of the ENSO cycle), mean changes of the phytoplankton-integrated Chl-a (B) and carbon fixation rate (PP) from the active to the relaxed phases of the local upwelling forcing cycle (phyto-pattern) were characterized. Those data were contrasted against similar ones reported off Punta Lengua de Vaca (Coquimbo, 30º S) and off Mejillones peninsula (Antofagasta, 23º S), encompassing different seasons and phases of intraseasonal and interannual (ENSO) cycles from 1992 to 1997. A "warm" phyto-pattern was schematically characterized by a significant increase in B and a quasi-steady evolution of PP from the active to the relaxed phases of one complete upwelling event. Conversely, relative small changes in B and a significant increase in PP characterized a "cold" phyto-pattern. It is proposed here that the ENSO "cold/warm" signal may be offset by more than one opposite "thermal" condition (seasonal and/or intraseasonal) in defining a "warm" or "cold" phyto-pattern associated with a particular cycle of the local upwelling forcing

La estrecha plataforma continental y la fuerte pendiente orográfica a lo largo de la costa en el norte y centro de Chile proporcionan una combinación única de vientos favorables a la surgencia durante todo el año con pulsos de surgencia cuasi-semanales asociados con perturbaciones atmosféricas atrapadas a la costa ("bajas costeras"). Esta variabilidad es modulada por oscilaciones intraestacionales en la profundidad de la termo/nutriclina producida por ondas oceánicas atrapadas a la costa, sobre las cuales se superponen los ciclos anuales (estaciones) e interanuales (ENOS). Durante los experimentos costeros frente a la bahía de Cruz Grande (29,5º S) realizados en noviembre de 1987 y 1988 (extremos opuestos del ciclo ENOS), se caracterizó el cambio medio en la Cl-a (B) y en la tasa de fijación de carbono (PP) entre las fases activa y relajada del ciclo del forzamiento local de la surgencia. Esos datos fueron contrastados con otros similares reportados frente a Punta Lengua de Vaca (Coquimbo, 30º S) y a la península de Mejillones (Antofagasta, 23º S), que comprenden diferentes estaciones del año y diferentes fases de los ciclos intraestacionales e interanuales (ENOS) entre 1992 y 1997. Un patrón-fitoplanctónico "cálido" fue caracterizado esquemáticamente por un aumento significativo en B y por una evolución cuasi-estacionaria en PP entre las fases activa y relajada de un evento completo de surgencia. A la inversa, un patrón-fitoplanctónico "frío" se caracterizó por cambios relativamente pequeños en B y por un incremento significativo en PP. Se propone aquí que la señal "fría/cálida" del ENOS puede estar compensada por más de una condición "térmica" opuesta (estacional y/o intraestacional) en la definición de un patrón fitoplanctónico "cálido" o "frío" asociado con un ciclo particular del forzamiento local de la surgencia.

RESUMEN. Entre el 10 y 17 de agosto de 1990 se efectuaron estaciones oceanográficas en el área frente al foco de surgencia de Punta Lengua de Vaca mediante CTD y botellas hasta 350 m de profundidad y una distancia de 12 millas náuticas de la costa (aproximadamente 22 km). Se analizan e interpretan, mediante perfiles T-S y estimaciones geostróficas, las características y dinámica de las aguas costeras y oceánicas en este período. Las observaciones comprendieron un período de relajación y posterior intensificación de los vientos favorables a la surgencia observados in situ mediante una estación meteorológica automática. La diferencia en el comportamiento de los campos de temperatura y salinidad en las estaciones próximas a la costa respecto de las oceánicas se explica por la intrusión de masas de agua y la influencia de ondas internas de gravedad. Estimaciones geostróficas referidas a 300 db indican corrientes del orden de 10 cm*s-1 hacia el norte en los primeros 100 m y hacia el sur bajo esa profundidad, consistentes con un esquema clásico de surgencia costera. Se analiza además la influencia de la surgencia generada frente a Punta Lengua de Vaca en las bahías de Tongoy y Guanaquero, ubicadas al norte de ese foco ABSTRACT. Oceanographic stations in a 12 nm transect off the upwelling focus of Punta Lengua de Vaca and adyacent area were occupied using CTD and bottles to 350 m depth on August 10 to 17, 1990. The characteristics and dynamics of coastal and oceanic waters are analyzed and interpreted by means of T-S profiles and geostrophic speed estimates. The observational period coincided with a relaxation of the coastal wind followed by an upwelling-favorable wind event, as observed "in situ" by an automatic metereological station. Differences of the temperature and salinity behavior at the coastal stations with respect to the oceanic ones are explained by intrusion of oceanic water masses and the influence of internal gravity waves. Geostrophic estimates relative to the 300 db level indicate northward currents of the order of 10 cm*s-1 in the first 100 m depth layer and southward ones under that level, consistent with the classical coastal upwelling scheme. Historic mudflows in Antofagasta, Chile, and their relationship to the El Niño/Southern Oscillation events. The coastal zone of the Atacama Desert is submitted to an extremely arid climate, characterized, in Antofagasta, by mean annual rainfall of 4 mm (1904-1998). However, the sporadic occurrence of heavy rainfall, together with the geomorphologic situation of the city, may produce debris and mud flows (' aluviones '). The occurrence of alluvial flows during the 20th century was investigated through the study of newspapers (available from 1916), instrumental data of precipitation (from 1904) and the observation of alluvial deposits which include anthropic remains (principally after 1900). The relationship between these evidences of alluvial activity with the occurrence of El Niño events was examined through a comparison between historical data, SOI (Southern Oscillation Index) data, and rainfall data in Antofagasta. Between 1916 and 1999, the city was affected by alluvial events in seven oportunities: 1925, 1930, twice in 1940, 1982, 1987 and 1991, with the most important episodes in 1940 and 1991. In all the cases, the rains occurred during the winter period of the developpement phase of El Niño (ENOS) events (very strong to moderate intensity), and were associated to frontal systems coming from higher latitudes, which also struck a major part of northen Chile. The convective character of the rainstorms is the cause of the great spatial zonification in the precipitations, within the same rainfall event. The comparison of annual rainfall data in Antofagasta with tendencies, at both regional and global scales, of the air temperature and the sea surface temperature, shows a coincidence between periods with more important precipitations and particular conditions, at an interdecadal scale, of the ocean-atmosphere global system. During the 20th century, alluvial episodes in the coastal area of northen Chile were coeval with periods during which a systematic increase of regional and global anomalies of the temperature of the air, and positive anomalies of the sea surface temperature were observed (between 1925 and 1942 -or 1947-, and from 1977 onwards) La costa del Desierto de Atacama está sometida a un clima de extrema aridez caracterizado, en la ciudad de Antofagasta, por un promedio de precipitaciones anuales de 4 mm (1904-1998). Sin embargo, la ocurrencia esporádica de precipitaciones intensas junto con la ubicación geomorfológica de la ciudad, la hacen susceptible de ser afectada por flujos de barro y detritos ('aluviones'). La ocurrencia de aluviones durante el siglo XX fue abordada a partir del estudio de crónicas de periódicos (desde 1916), registros instrumentales de precipitación (desde 1904) y la observación de secciones de depósitos aluviales con contenido de restos históricos de origen antrópico (principalmente después de 1900). Junto con ésto, la relación con eventos El Niño se estudió a partir de la comparación de datos de crónicas históricas, datos de Indice de Oscilación del Sur (IOS), y datos de precipitaciones en Antofagasta. Entre 1916 y 1999, la ciudad fue afectada por inundaciones o aluviones en siete oportunidades : en 1925, 1930, dos veces en 1940, 1982, 1987 y 1991, de los cuales los más importantes ocurrieron en 1940 y 1991. En todas las oportunidades las lluvias ocurrieron durante el invierno de la fase de desarrollo de eventos El Niño (ENOS, de intensidad muy fuerte o moderada), y formaron parte de sistemas frontales provenientes desde el sur que afectaron, además, a gran parte del norte de Chile. El carácter convectivo de las tormentas es responsable de la gran variabilidad espacial que han mostrado las precipitaciones en distintas zonas de la costa, durante un mismo evento lluvioso. A partir de la comparación de datos de precipitación anual en Antofagasta con tendencias de escala global y regional de la temperatura del aire y de la superficie del océano, se sugiere una coincidencia entre períodos con mayor ocurrencia de precipitaciones y condiciones de escala interdecenal del sistema océano-atmósfera global. Durante el siglo XX, los eventos aluviales en la costa del norte del país coincidieron con los períodos de aumento sostenido de anomalías regionales y globales de la temperatura del aire, o de anomalías positivas de la temperatura superficial del mar (entre 1925 y 1942 -ó 1947- y a partir de 1977)
