1. Applying a time-varying GEV distribution to correct bias in rainfall quantiles derived from regional climate models

Abstract: Climate warming is causing an increase in extreme hydrometeorological events in most parts of the world. This phenomenon is expected to continue and will affect the frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation events. Although bias correction in regional climate model simulations has also been used to assess changes in precipitation extremes at daily and longer time steps, trends in the series predicted have seldom been considered. We present a novel bias correction technique that allows for the correcting of biases in the upper tails of the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution, while preserving the trend in projected precipitation extremes. The concept of non-stationary bias correction is demonstrated in a case study in which we used four EURO-CORDEX RCM models to estimate future rainfall quantiles. Historical observations have been used to correct biases in historical runs of the RCMs. The mean relative change in rainfall quantiles between the 1991–2021 historical period and the time horizon of 2080 was found to be 13.5% (st. dev.: 2.9%) for the return period of 2 years, which tends to decline with increasing return periods. Upon the return periods of 50 and 100 years, the mean relative change was predicted to be 5.5% (st. dev.: 1.1%) and 4.8% (st. dev.: 1%), respectively.

2. The L-moment based regional approach to curve numbers for Slovak and Polish Carpathian catchments

Abstract: The main objective of the paper was to propose and evaluate the performance of a regional approach to estimate CN values and to test the impact of different initial abstraction ratios. The curve number (CN) was analyzed for five Slovak and five Polish catchments situated in the Carpathian Mountains. The L-moment based method of Hosking and Wallis and the ANOVA test were combined to delineate the area in two homogenous regions of catchments with similar CN values. The optimization condition enabled the choice of the initial abstraction ratio, which provided the smallest discrepancy between the tabulated and estimated CNs and the antecedent runoff conditions. The homogeneity in the CN within the regions of four Slovak and four Polish catchments was revealed. Finally, the regional CN was proposed to be at the 50% quantile of the regional theoretical distribution function estimated from all the CNs in the region.

The aims of this study were to determine 1) whether rehabilitation featuring both VR as well as exercise training provides benefits over exercise training (ET) alone and 2) whether rehabilitation featuring VR training instead of exercise training provides equivalent benefits.Patients and Methods: The study recruited 106 patients with COPD to a 2-week high-intensity, five times a week intervention. Randomized into three groups, 34 patients participated in a traditional pulmonary rehabilitation program including endurance exercise training (ET), 38 patients participated in traditional pulmonary rehabilitation, including both endurance exercise training and virtual reality training (ET+VR) and 34 patients participated in pulmonary rehabilitation program including virtual reality training but no endurance exercise training (VR). The traditional pulmonary rehabilitation program consisted of fitness exercises, resistance respiratory muscle and relaxation training. Xbox 360® and Kinect® Adventures software were used for the VR training of lower and upper body strength, endurance, trunk control and dynamic balance. Comparison of the changes in the Senior Fitness Test was the primary outcome. Analysis was performed using linear mixed-effects models.Results: The comparison between ET and ET+VR groups showed that ET+VR group was superior to ET group in Arm Curl (p< 0.003), Chair stand (p< 0.008), Back scratch (p< 0.002), Chair sit and reach (p< 0.001), Up and go (p< 0.000), 6-min walk test (p< 0.011). Whereas, the comparison between ET and VR groups showed that VR group was superior to ET group in Arm Curl (p< 0.000), Chair stand (p< 0.001), 6-min walk test (p< 0.031).Conclusion: Results suggest that pulmonary rehabilitation program supplemented with VR training is beneficial intervention to improve physical fitness in patients with COPD.Keywords: virtual reality, COPD, pulmonary rehabilitation, physical activity, exercise

Abstract: Gravitational waves from black-hole merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models - and also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70 \pm 0.82 M\odot BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. Alternatively, and more plausibly, it could belong to the ED-2 stream, which likely originated from a globular cluster that had been disrupted by the Milky Way., Comment: 23 pages, accepted fro publication in A&A Letters. Abstract: Gaia's readout window strategy is challenged by very dense fields in the sky. Therefore, in addition to standard Gaia observations, full Sky Mapper (SM) images were recorded for nine selected regions in the sky. A new software pipeline exploits these Service Interface Function (SIF) images of crowded fields (CFs), making use of the availability of the full two-dimensional (2D) information. This new pipeline produced half a million additional Gaia sources in the region of the omega Centauri ($\omega$ Cen) cluster, which are published with this Focused Product Release. We discuss the dedicated SIF CF data reduction pipeline, validate its data products, and introduce their Gaia archive table. Our aim is to improve the completeness of the {\it Gaia} source inventory in a very dense region in the sky, $\omega$ Cen. An adapted version of {\it Gaia}'s Source Detection and Image Parameter Determination software located sources in the 2D SIF CF images. We validated the results by comparing them to the public {\it Gaia} DR3 catalogue and external Hubble Space Telescope data. With this Focused Product Release, 526\,587 new sources have been added to the {\it Gaia} catalogue in $\omega$ Cen. Apart from positions and brightnesses, the additional catalogue contains parallaxes and proper motions, but no meaningful colour information. While SIF CF source parameters generally have a lower precision than nominal {\it Gaia} sources, in the cluster centre they increase the depth of the combined catalogue by three magnitudes and improve the source density by a factor of ten. This first SIF CF data publication already adds great value to the {\it Gaia} catalogue. It demonstrates what to expect for the fourth {\it Gaia} catalogue, which will contain additional sources for all nine SIF CF regions.

Abstract: Context. Strongly lensed quasars are fundamental sources for cosmology. The Gaia space mission covers the entire sky with the unprecedented resolution of $0.18$" in the optical, making it an ideal instrument to search for gravitational lenses down to the limiting magnitude of 21. Nevertheless, the previous Gaia Data Releases are known to be incomplete for small angular separations such as those expected for most lenses. Aims. We present the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium GravLens pipeline, which was built to analyse all Gaia detections around quasars and to cluster them into sources, thus producing a catalogue of secondary sources around each quasar. We analysed the resulting catalogue to produce scores that indicate source configurations that are compatible with strongly lensed quasars. Methods. GravLens uses the DBSCAN unsupervised clustering algorithm to detect sources around quasars. The resulting catalogue of multiplets is then analysed with several methods to identify potential gravitational lenses. We developed and applied an outlier scoring method, a comparison between the average BP and RP spectra of the components, and we also used an extremely randomised tree algorithm. These methods produce scores to identify the most probable configurations and to establish a list of lens candidates. Results. We analysed the environment of 3 760 032 quasars. A total of 4 760 920 sources, including the quasars, were found within 6" of the quasar positions. This list is given in the Gaia archive. In 87\% of cases, the quasar remains a single source, and in 501 385 cases neighbouring sources were detected. We propose a list of 381 lensed candidates, of which we identified 49 as the most promising. Beyond these candidates, the associate tables in this Focused Product Release allow the entire community to explore the unique Gaia data for strong lensing studies further., Comment: 35 pages, 60 figures, accepted for publication by Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract: The third Gaia Data Release (DR3) provided photometric time series of more than 2 million long-period variable (LPV) candidates. Anticipating the publication of full radial-velocity (RV) in DR4, this Focused Product Release (FPR) provides RV time series for a selection of LPVs with high-quality observations. We describe the production and content of the Gaia catalog of LPV RV time series, and the methods used to compute variability parameters published in the Gaia FPR. Starting from the DR3 LPVs catalog, we applied filters to construct a sample of sources with high-quality RV measurements. We modeled their RV and photometric time series to derive their periods and amplitudes, and further refined the sample by requiring compatibility between the RV period and at least one of the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, or $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric periods. The catalog includes RV time series and variability parameters for 9\,614 sources in the magnitude range $6\lesssim G/{\rm mag}\lesssim 14$, including a flagged top-quality subsample of 6\,093 stars whose RV periods are fully compatible with the values derived from the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, and $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric time series. The RV time series contain a mean of 24 measurements per source taken unevenly over a duration of about three years. We identify the great most sources (88%) as genuine LPVs, with about half of them showing a pulsation period and the other half displaying a long secondary period. The remaining 12% consists of candidate ellipsoidal binaries. Quality checks against RVs available in the literature show excellent agreement. We provide illustrative examples and cautionary remarks. The publication of RV time series for almost 10\,000 LPVs constitutes, by far, the largest such database available to date in the literature. Abstract: The discovery of gravitational wave (GW) events and the detection of electromagnetic counterparts from GW170817 has started the era of multimessenger GW astronomy.The field has been developing rapidly and in this paper,we discuss the preparation for detecting these events with the ESA Gaia satellite,during the 4th observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) collaboration that has started on May 24,2023. Gaia is contributing to the search for GW counterparts by a new transient detection pipeline called GaiaX. In GaiaX, a new source appearing in the field of view of only one of the two telescopes on-board Gaia is sufficient to send out an alert on the possible detection of a new transient. Ahead of O4, an experiment was conducted over a period of about two months. During the two weeks around New Moon in this period of time, the MeerLICHT (ML) telescope located in South Africa tried (weather permitting) to observe the same region of the sky as Gaia within 10 minutes. Any GaiaX detected transient was published publicly. ML and Gaia have similar limiting magnitudes for typical seeing conditions at ML. At the end of the experiment, we had 11861 GaiaX candidate transients and 15806 ML candidate transients, which we further analysed and the results of which are presented in this paper. Abstract: SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we used unbiased systems approaches to study the host-selective forces driving VOC evolution. We discovered that VOCs evolved convergent strategies to remodel the host by modulating viral RNA and protein levels, altering viral and host protein phosphorylation, and rewiring virus-host protein-protein interactions. Integrative computational analyses revealed that although Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta ultimately converged to suppress interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), Omicron BA.1 did not. ISG suppression correlated with the expression of viral innate immune antagonist proteins, including Orf6, N, and Orf9b, which we mapped to specific mutations. Later Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 more potently suppressed innate immunity than early subvariant BA.1, which correlated with Orf6 levels, although muted in BA.4 by a mutation that disrupts the Orf6-nuclear pore interaction. Our findings suggest that SARS-CoV-2 convergent evolution overcame human adaptive and innate immune barriers, laying the groundwork to tackle future pandemics.

Abstract: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) encodes several proteins that inhibit host interferon responses. Among these, ORF6 antagonizes interferon signaling by disrupting nucleocytoplasmic trafficking through interactions with the nuclear pore complex components Nup98-Rae1. However, the roles and contributions of ORF6 during physiological infection remain unexplored. We assessed the role of ORF6 during infection using recombinant viruses carrying a deletion or loss-of-function (LoF) mutation in ORF6. ORF6 plays key roles in interferon antagonism and viral pathogenesis by interfering with nuclear import and specifically the translocation of IRF and STAT transcription factors. Additionally, ORF6 inhibits cellular mRNA export, resulting in the remodeling of the host cell proteome, and regulates viral protein expression. Interestingly, the ORF6:D61L mutation that emerged in the Omicron BA.2 and BA.4 variants exhibits reduced interactions with Nup98-Rae1 and consequently impairs immune evasion. Our findings highlight the role of ORF6 in antagonizing innate immunity and emphasize the importance of studying the immune evasion strategies of SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract: Inflation expectations are a crucial variable for central banks. However, empirically examining their properties is challenging. This paper juxtaposes the properties of consumer and professional expectations. It also assesses the degree of forward- and backward-lookingness and the information content of expectations. We apply entropy-based measures (common information and mutual common information) to capture nonlinear dependencies and dynamic time warping to account for different lags in the relationships. The study covers 12 inflation-targeting economies from the European region. The results suggest that in most countries, professionals are more forward-looking, and consumers follow professionals. Both groups of economic agents present expectations that are aligned in terms of information content. However, cross-country differences occur. These results imply that, from the central bank’s point of view, communication and practices designed to shape expectations, even if understood mostly by specialists, are effective also for consumers. The novelty of this study lies in its use of alternative methods to tackle the formation and dependencies between heterogeneous expectations. This avoids the drawbacks of a standard approach and allows broader conclusions to be drawn.

Abstract: Understanding which sources are present in an astronomical catalogue and which are not is crucial for the accurate interpretation of astronomical data. In particular, for the multidimensional Gaia data, filters and cuts on different parameters or measurements introduces a selection function that may unintentionally alter scientific conclusions in subtle ways. We aim to develop a methodology to estimate the selection function for different sub-samples of stars in the Gaia catalogue. Comparing the number of stars in a given sub-sample to those in the overall Gaia catalogue, provides an estimate of the sub-sample membership probability, as a function of sky position, magnitude and colour. This estimate must differentiate the stochastic absence of sub-sample stars from selection effects. When multiplied with the overall Gaia catalogue selection function this provides the total selection function of the sub-sample. We present the method by estimating the selection function of the sources in Gaia DR3 with heliocentric radial velocity measurements. We also compute the selection function for the stars in the Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus sample, confirming that the apparent asymmetry of its debris across the sky is merely caused by selection effects. The developed method estimates the selection function of the stars present in a sub-sample of Gaia data, given that the sub-sample is completely contained in the Gaia parent catalogue (for which the selection function is known). Abstract: The main aim of the article was application of some statistical tests for investigation of weak stationarity of hydrologic time series. The tests were applied to mean monthly flow and maximum annual flow on three rivers: two Polish and one American river. Firstly, the modified Mann–Kendall test for autocorrelated data was used to detect trend. After detrending we used “unit root tests” based on the DF test and “stationarity tests” based on the KPSS test. The tests were investigated and compared in some aspects: analysis of residuals, application to seasonal series, AIC and Schwarz values.

This study explores how different buffer room configurations impact microbial isolation using the bacterium Micrococcus luteus and bacteriophage phi6 as test organisms. Through a comprehensive approach integrating architecture, technology, and scientific methodologies, we developed strategies to optimise safe buffer environments. Comparative analyses of various isolation systems highlighted significant variations in their effectiveness at reducing bioaerosol concentrations, directly influenced by the design and layout of buffer rooms. These findings are crucial for the effective design of medical and public spaces, particularly during pandemics, where preventing virus transmission is critical for public health.

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to present the genesis of the emergence and the scope of powers of the European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs) (the EBA, ESMA, and EIOPA), with particular reference to the EBA as regards the building of its supervisory normative standard and the protection of the consumer of ﬁnancial services. The authors will propose de lege ferenda postulates which, in their view, would allow for an improvement in the quality of the ﬁnancial services offered to consumers and ensure a higher level of protection of their interests and, at the same time, legal certainty for their providers. Increasingly sophisticated and complex ﬁnancial products cause interpretation difﬁculties for both the courts and consumer protection authorities, but above all for consumers themselves, which consequently poses a challenge for both sides of the market (supply and demand). It is also a challenge for the post-crisis ESAs as the EU bodies not only designated to monitor and manage both the stability and security of the ﬁnancial market, along with the actual level of consumer protection within it. In the preparation of the article, the legal-dogmatic and legal-theoretical method, which is standard for such studies, was applied, which allows for an analysis of the provisions of EU law and the identiﬁcation of the norms stemming from them using interpretation and the assessment of the content of the provisions through the prism of the principle of consumer protection from Articles 12 and 169 TFEU and the EBAs’ competence provisions. Due to the fact that, in principle, the powers and competences of all three ESAs are analogous and only differ in terms of the scope of their application (i.e., ﬁnancial institutions operating in the relevant ﬁnancial market sectors – banking, insurance, and pension and investment), the authors will present their considerations with reference to the European Banking Authority (EBA), which is an exempliﬁcation of the powers of the other supervisory authorities. Thus, the secondary piece of EU legislation to be considered in this article will be the Council and European Parliament Regulation, hereinafter known as “EBA Regulation” and the actions taken by the EBA on that basis.

Abstract: The subject of the article is the termination date of an academic teacher’s employment contract. The Law on Higher Education and Science binds this date to the end of the semester. While the regulation provided for in the pragmatics allows for a precise determination of the end of the summer semester (30 September), it does not provide grounds for an unambiguous determination of the end of the winter semester. This is confirmed by the differing views of the doctrine on the matter and the practice, as well as the first statements of the judicature. The interpretative dispute boils down to whether the end of the winter semester is determined at the university level or has been uniformly defined in the Law on Higher Education and Science. In view of the significant discrepancies in interpretation and the objections raised to the various positions taken in this dispute, it seems justified to call for a clearer regulation of when the end of the winter semester falls, so that the termination date of an academic teacher’s employment contract does not raise any doubts.

Abstract: We present the third data release of the European Space Agency's Gaia mission, GDR3. The GDR3 catalogue is the outcome of the processing of raw data collected with the Gaia instruments during the first 34 months of the mission by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium. 38. Modification of lithium titanate spinel by d-electron metals

Abstract: A simply and cheap solid state synthesis was used to produce powders of spinel phase Li4-xCuxTi5O12, where 0≤x≤0.2, with crystallite size in ~890 nanometers range. The as-prepared samples were verified by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The electrochemical performance of these samples was examined by galvanostatic and voltamperometric tests. To determine transport properties an impedance spectroscopy tests were obtained. These measurements showed excellent high-rate performance and remark- ably good cyclability of the fabricated powders. Capacity retention in Li3.85Cu0.15Ti5O12 has 77% theoretical capacity after raise the discharge current from 1C to 10C and there is less than 2% of capacity loss after 50 charge/discharge cycles at 1C current rate.

Abstract: Introduction and objective Obesity poses a significant public health challenge due to its association with an elevated risk of various chronic diseases, including cardiovascular conditions, type 2 diabetes, and overall mortality. While lifestyle modifications such as dietary changes and increased physical activity remain cornerstone interventions in obesity management, pharmacological treatments have emerged as an adjunctive approach to address this complex condition. The review aims to compare the effectiveness of current pharmacotherapy and show upcoming methods of treatment of obesity. Review methods The review was conducted by searching scientific publications in PubMed, Google Scholar, Clinicaltrials.gov, Summaries of Product Characteristics, URPL, FDA, and EMA databases. The articles on medications available in Poland for treating obesity and the latest clinical trials of upcoming drugs were analyzed, followed by a concise review of the collected data. Abbreviated description of the state of knowledge Currently, in the Polish market, medications available for obesity treatment include orlistat, the combination of naltrexone and bupropion, liraglutide, tirzepatide, and available as part of the target import - semaglutide. Promising clinical trials are being conducted on further medications for weight reduction, including retatrutide, orforglipron, cagrilintide, and amycretin. Regrettably, new and effective medications due to their high cost and insufficient funding. Summary New pharmacotherapy options for obesity, particularly anti-diabetic medications, are rapidly advancing. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogs have shown promising results in weight reduction, surpassing previous medications such as orlistat or naltrexone. Recent drugs offer weight loss ranging up to 25%. More studies are underway on novel and increasingly effective medications.

Abstract: In this article, we present the case of an 87-year-old patient whose initial symptom of developing pancreatic cancer was newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus. She was treated with metformin, which, on the one hand, could slow the development of pancreatic cancer and, on the other hand, delayed a key cancer diagnosis. However, before the definitive diagnosis, the patient's symptoms were considered merely as side effects of metformin treatment, delaying the proper diagnosis. We consider that early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer remains a significant challenge. Often, the first symptom is newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus type 2. In this article, we aim to demonstrate the importance of being vigilant when diagnosing and treating diabetes mellitus with metformin. We also present the impact of metformin on the course of pancreatic cancer. Additionally, we emphasize the need to be attentive when patients complain of side effects of this medication, as they may often mask the development of pancreatic cancer.

Abstract: Introduction Pectoralis major muscle ruptures, once considered rare, are now more common, especially in young male athletes and weightlifters involved in high-intensity sports. This injury can significantly impair upper limb function, leading to pain, weakness, and potential disability. Exploring and understanding available treatment options, particularly the promising role of orthobiologic therapies like PRP, is essential for optimizing recovery and achieving the best outcomes. Purpose The purpose of this review is to evaluate the effectiveness and the role of orthobiologic treatments such as PRP in enhancing healing and functional recovery for pectoralis major muscle ruptures. Conslusions The treatment of pectoralis major muscle ruptures requires a tailored approach that considers the injury's severity, the patient's activity level, and their goals. Nonoperative treatment can be effective for partial tendinous tears, muscle belly tears, muscle origin tears, and complete tendinous tears in sedentary individuals or when surgery is not feasible. Surgical intervention generally provides superior functional outcomes, particularly for athletes and those with complete ruptures. Orthobiologic treatments, such as ultrasound-guided PRP injections, provide a promising complement to conservative management, with potential benefits in pain reduction and accelerated functional recovery. Studies indicate that PRP-treated patients report higher satisfaction and better outcomes compared to those without PRP treatment. Nevertheless, many questions remain regarding the optimal formulation, dosage, and rehabilitation protocols for PRP. To fully understand PRP's effectiveness and refine its applications in sports medicine, more rigorous and long-term studies are needed. Additionally, further research is required to improve nonoperative treatment and rehabilitation protocols, ensuring optimal outcomes for all patients.

Abstract: Introduction: Intermittent Fasting (IF) has become a popular method in the contemporary medical world as an up-to date technique of the health and wellbeing in the last several years. Purpose: This research aims to investigate the both impact of IF on sports performance and therapeutic potential of IF on cardiovascular, metabolic and neurological diseases with focus on obesity, diabetes and impact on cardiometabolic risk. State of Knowledge: Intermittent fasting has been found to extend both life and health span by positively impacting weight management, reducing the risk of cardiovascular incidents, promoting cellular repair, and exhibiting anti-inflammatory actions. It improves blood sugar levels, provides protection against hepatosteatosis, enhances lipid metabolism and has beneficial effects on the brain-gut-microbiome system. IF leads to improved mental performance and offers benefits for neurological disorders such as epilepsy, Alzheimer's, and multiple sclerosis IF has shown beneficial effects on body composition and lean muscle mass without compromising physical performance nor impair strength. However, concerns about nutritional deficiencies, sustainability, and social implications are evident. Common drawbacks of IF include feelings of hunger, irritability, fatigue and hypoglycemia risk. IF is not recommended for pregnant woman and individuals suffering from eating disorders. Conclusions: IF is as a promising tool alongside traditional therapeutic strategies, particularly for addressing obesity, diabetes, and managing cardiovascular risk. For athletes it is a valuable tool in managing fat-mass particularly combined with high-intensity interval training (HIIT). However it is not recommended for certain groups. The diverse landscape of IF patterns, coupled with drawbacks, underscores the necessity for long-term research before routinely recommending IF for athletes and patients.

Abstract: We present the first estimate of the Galactic nova rate based on optical transient surveys covering the entire sky. Using data from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) and \textit{Gaia} -- the only two all-sky surveys to report classical nova candidates -- we find 39 confirmed Galactic novae and 7 additional unconfirmed candidates discovered from 2019--2021, yielding a nova discovery rate of $\approx 14$ yr$^{-1}$. Using accurate Galactic stellar mass models, three-dimensional dust maps, and incorporating realistic nova light curves, we have built a sophisticated Galactic nova model that allows an estimate of the recovery fraction of Galactic novae from these surveys over this time period. The observing capabilities of each survey are distinct: the high cadence of ASAS-SN makes it sensitive to fast novae, while the broad observing filter and high spatial resolution of \textit{Gaia} make it more sensitive to highly reddened novae across the entire Galactic plane and bulge. Despite these differences, we find that ASAS-SN and \textit{Gaia} give consistent Galactic nova rates, with a final joint nova rate of $26 \pm 5$ yr$^{-1}$. This inferred nova rate is substantially lower than found by many other recent studies. Critically assessing the systematic uncertainties in the Galactic nova rate, we argue that the role of faint fast-fading novae has likely been overestimated, but that subtle details in the operation of transient alert pipelines can have large, sometimes unappreciated effects on transient recovery efficiency. Abstract: The Gaia mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) has been routinely observing Solar System objects (SSOs) since the beginning of its operations in August 2014. The Gaia data release three (DR3) includes, for the first time, the mean reflectance spectra of a selected sample of 60 518 SSOs, primarily asteroids, observed between August 5, 2014, and May 28, 2017. Each reflectance spectrum was derived from measurements obtained by means of the Blue and Red photometers (BP/RP), which were binned in 16 discrete wavelength bands. We describe the processing of the Gaia spectral data of SSOs, explaining both the criteria used to select the subset of asteroid spectra published in Gaia DR3, and the different steps of our internal validation procedures. In order to further assess the quality of Gaia SSO reflectance spectra, we carried out external validation against SSO reflectance spectra obtained from ground-based and space-borne telescopes and available in the literature. For each selected SSO, an epoch reflectance was computed by dividing the calibrated spectrum observed by the BP/RP at each transit on the focal plane by the mean spectrum of a solar analogue. The latter was obtained by averaging the Gaia spectral measurements of a selected sample of stars known to have very similar spectra to that of the Sun. Finally, a mean of the epoch reflectance spectra was calculated in 16 spectral bands for each SSO. The agreement between Gaia mean reflectance spectra and those available in the literature is good for bright SSOs, regardless of their taxonomic spectral class. We identify an increase in the spectral slope of S-type SSOs with increasing phase angle. Moreover, we show that the spectral slope increases and the depth of the 1 um absorption band decreases for increasing ages of S-type asteroid families., Comment: 30 pages, 26 figures

Abstract: With the most recent Gaia data release the number of sources with complete 6D phase space information (position and velocity) has increased to well over 33 million stars, while stellar astrophysical parameters are provided for more than 470 million sources, in addition to the identification of over 11 million variable stars. Using the astrophysical parameters and variability classifications provided in Gaia DR3, we select various stellar populations to explore and identify non-axisymmetric features in the disc of the Milky Way in both configuration and velocity space. Using more about 580 thousand sources identified as hot OB stars, together with 988 known open clusters younger than 100 million years, we map the spiral structure associated with star formation 4-5 kpc from the Sun. We select over 2800 Classical Cepheids younger than 200 million years, which show spiral features extending as far as 10 kpc from the Sun in the outer disc. We also identify more than 8.7 million sources on the red giant branch (RGB), of which 5.7 million have line-of-sight velocities, allowing the velocity field of the Milky Way to be mapped as far as 8 kpc from the Sun, including the inner disc. The spiral structure revealed by the young populations is consistent with recent results using Gaia EDR3 astrometry and source lists based on near infrared photometry, showing the Local (Orion) arm to be at least 8 kpc long, and an outer arm consistent with what is seen in HI surveys, which seems to be a continuation of the Perseus arm into the third quadrant. Meanwhile, the subset of RGB stars with velocities clearly reveals the large scale kinematic signature of the bar in the inner disc, as well as evidence of streaming motions in the outer disc that might be associated with spiral arms or bar resonances. Abstract: (Abridged) Blue (BP) and Red (RP) Photometer low-resolution spectral data is one of the exciting new products in Gaia Data Release 3 (Gaia DR3). We calibrate about 65 billion individual transit spectra onto the same mean BP/RP instrument through a series of calibration steps, including background subtraction, calibration of the CCD geometry and an iterative procedure for the calibration of CCD efficiency as well as variations of the line-spread function and dispersion across the focal plane and in time. The calibrated transit spectra are then combined for each source in terms of an expansion into continuous basis functions. Time-averaged mean spectra covering the optical to near-infrared wavelength range [330, 1050] nm are published for approximately 220 million objects. Most of these are brighter than G = 17.65 but some BP/RP spectra are published for sources down to G = 21.43. Their signal- to-noise ratio varies significantly over the wavelength range covered and with magnitude and colour of the observed objects, with sources around G = 15 having S/N above 100 in some wavelength ranges. The top-quality BP/RP spectra are achieved for sources with magnitudes 9 < G < 12, having S/N reaching 1000 in the central part of the RP wavelength range. Scientific validation suggests that the internal calibration was generally successful. However, there is some evidence for imperfect calibrations at the bright end G < 11, where calibrated BP/RP spectra can exhibit systematic flux variations that exceed their estimated flux uncertainties. Abstract: The third Gaia data release provides photometric time series covering 34 months for about 10 million stars. For many of those stars, a characterisation in Fourier space and their variability classification are also provided. This paper focuses on intermediate- to high-mass (IHM) main sequence pulsators M >= 1.3 Msun) of spectral types O, B, A, or F, known as beta Cep, slowly pulsating B (SPB), delta Sct, and gamma Dor stars. These stars are often multi-periodic and display low amplitudes, making them challenging targets to analyse with sparse time series. All datasets used in this analysis are part of the Gaia DR3 data release. The photometric time series were used to perform a Fourier analysis, while the global astrophysical parameters necessary for the empirical instability strips were taken from the Gaia DR3 gspphot tables, and the vsini data were taken from the Gaia DR3 esphs tables. We show that for nearby OBAF-type pulsators, the Gaia DR3 data are precise and accurate enough to pinpoint them in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We find empirical instability strips covering broader regions than theoretically predicted. In particular, our study reveals the presence of fast rotating gravity-mode pulsators outside the strips, as well as the co-existence of rotationally modulated variables inside the strips as reported before in the literature. We derive an extensive period-luminosity relation for delta Sct stars and provide evidence that the relation features different regimes depending on the oscillation period. Finally, we demonstrate how stellar rotation attenuates the amplitude of the dominant oscillation mode of delta Sct stars.

Abstract: The third gaia data release (DR3) provides a wealth of new data products. The early part of the release, Gaia EDR3, already provided the astrometric and photometric data for nearly two billion sources. The full release now adds improved parameters compared to Gaia DR2 for radial velocities, astrophysical parameters, variability information, light curves, and orbits for Solar System objects. The improvements are in terms of the number of sources, the variety of parameter information, precision, and accuracy. For the first time, Gaia DR3 also provides a sample of spectrophotometry and spectra obtained with the Radial Velocity Spectrometer, binary star solutions, and a characterisation of extragalactic object candidates. Before the publication of the catalogue, these data have undergone a dedicated transversal validation process. The aim of this paper is to highlight limitations of the data that were found during this process and to provide recommendations for the usage of the catalogue. The validation was obtained through a statistical analysis of the data, a confirmation of the internal consistency of different products, and a comparison of the values to external data or models. Gaia DR3 is a new major step forward in terms of the number, diversity, precision, and accuracy of the Gaia products. As always in such a large and complex catalogue, however, issues and limitations have also been found. Detailed examples of the scientific quality of the Gaia DR3 release can be found in the accompanying data-processing papers as well as in the performance verification papers.
