8. Measuring changes in forest floor evaporation after prescribed burning in Southern Italy pine plantations

Abstract

Wildfires are a growing concern in the Mediterranean area. Prescribed burning (PB) is often used to reduce fire risk, through fine fuel reduction. However, the monitoring of PB effects on ecosystem processes is mandatory before its spread. This study aims to assess hydrological effects of PB on the topsoil by controlled laboratory experiments. The evaporation flux successive to interception of a simulated rain in the litter and the fermentation layers was determined using both a water balance approach and an experimental 2H and 18O isotopes mass balance approach. PB was performed in spring 2014 in three Southern Italy pine plantations, dominated, respectively, by Pinus pinea L. (in Castel Volturno Nature State Reserve), P. halepensis Mill. (in Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni National Park) and P. pinaster Ait. (in Tirone Alto-Vesuvio Nature State Reserve). In each study site, two cores, both including litter and fermentation layers, were sampled, 18 months after PB, in burned and in near unburned (control) areas, respectively, by means of customized collectors allowing to extract “undisturbed” cores. Afterwards, each core was moved into a lysimeter set-up in the laboratory, under controlled conditions (temperature of 22 °C, relative humidity of 50%), to carry out duplicate infiltration and evaporation experiments. To simulate rainfall, 1 L of tap water (=32 mm of rain) was sprinkled uniformly on the litter layer in the lysimeter and intercepted water from the litter and fermentation layer was collected for isotope analysis at two different depths for each layer, two times per day until 2 days after the rain simulation. The results of the water balance and isotope mass balance showed a slightly lower evaporation of intercepted water from the forest floor in burned areas, compared to unburned ones, but in most cases not statistically significant. Abstract

The Mediterranean shrubland is a mosaic of vegetation types mainly related to fire disturbance. In Castel Volturno Nature Reserve (South Italy) patches of high and low maquis are occurring with small gaps in the shrub cover dominated by herbs. The mosaic of shrub cover contributes to the high spatial variability of soil biological processes. No data are yet available for clearings. In this study in clearings, dominated by herbaceous species, belowground and aboveground biomass and some soil chemical, physical and biological characteristics were measured. The total plant biomass reached the value of 908,04 ± 83,99 g m-2 at the end of the vegetative period (March – June). The belowground biomass was mostly produced in the first phases of the vegetative cycle, and didn’t increase markedly in the later phases. Soil organic matter was 8,71 ± 0,62 % and pH was 7,18 ± 0,08. Soil microbial biomass and respiration increased from March to May as did the aboveground biomass, and decreased in the following drought period. The values of endogenous mineralization coefficient suggested a slow utilization of soil organic carbon while the low values of catabolic evenness were indicative of low microbial funtctional biodiversity.

Abstract

This study examined the effects of light and intense experimental fires and of wildfire on the soil microbial biomass and activity and on organic carbon turnover in a coastal area of southern Italy. Wildfire, that mainly affected plant cover, caused a rise in the input of organic matter to the soil, but did not significantly influence total microbial biomass nor fungal mycelia. In contrast experimental fires developing on the soil surface caused a decrease in the organic carbon as well as in total microbial biomass and fungal mycelia. All types of fires resulted in an increased soil potential respiration and metabolic quotient (qCO2: mg CO2-C mg-1 Cmic 10 d-1). Moreover, increases in the coefficient of endogenous mineralization (CEM: mg CO2-C g-1 Corg 10 d-1) after experimental fires and increases in the soil CO2 emission after wildfire were also observed. The data suggest that burned soils may be an important source of carbon for the atmosphere.

Abstract

The relationship between pollution by heavy metals and soil microbial community was investigated in an area of Southern Italy mainly used for agriculture but also affected by industrial and extractive activities as well as vehicular traffic. Soil samples were seasonally collected in permanent crop fields (i.e. citrus and peach orchards, olive groves and vineyard) and uncultivated areas (coniferous and mixed forests, shrublands, grazing lands). Soil samples were analysed for chemical (water content, pH, cation exchange capacity, organic C, Cr, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd contents) and biological properties (microbial biomass, fungal mycelium, soil respiration, potentially mineralizable nitrogen, metabolic quotient and carbon mineralization rate). The results showed that heavy metal contents in the studied soils generally fell within the limit values after Italian law, with the exception of soil from vineyard that generally exceeded the limit value for Cu, probably because of the large use of copper-containing fungicides. The soil Pb content was always above the values reported for typical unpolluted soils and sometimes the same was also observed for Cd and Cu. The data suggest that Cr, Cu and Zn mainly derive from agricultural activity, whereas Pb and Cd were mainly introduced by cement industry associated with extractive activity. The soil microbial community was negatively affected by increased Cr, Cu and Zn contents, but not by Pb and Cd. 34. Factors influencing limit values for pine needle litter decomposition : A synthesis for boreal and temperate pine forest systems

Abstract

We synthesized available data for decomposition of pine (Pinus) needle litter in pine forests to determine the litter chemical characteristics and climate factors that explained variation in the limit value, i. e. the level of accumulated mass loss at which the decomposition process either continues at a very low rate or possibly stops. Our data base included 56 separate studies on decomposition of pine needle litter, spanning Scots pine, lodgepole pine, Aleppo pine, stone pine and white pine, mainly incubated at the site of collection. Studies had 5 to 19 samplings, on average 10, and the decomposition was followed to a mass loss ranging from 47 to 83%, on average 67%. The periods from 3.0 to 5.4 years, on average 3.9 years, were of sufficient duration to allow estimates of limit values of decomposition. We used a linear mixed model with regression effects to relate limit values to potential explanatory variables, namely the sites' long-term mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP) and to substrate-chemistry factors. Regarding the latter, we explored two models; one that included initial concentrations of water solubles, lignin, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and Mn and one that included only lignin, N, Ca, and Mn to focus on those nutrients known to influence lignin degradation. Using backward elimination significant explanatory variables were determined. For litter decomposed in its site of origin we found the limit value to depend mainly on the initial concentration of Mn, with higher Mn concentrations resulting in higher accumulated mass loss. Thus, litter with higher Mn reached a higher limit value and left a smaller stable fraction. This is likely due to the fact that Mn is an essential component of ligninolytic enzymes important for degrading litter in the later stages of decomposition.
