This guide offers activities for teachers as well as community program planners that enhance the awareness of women's history and women's contributions to history. Although National Women's History Month is celebrated in March, programs need not be limited to that time period. The programs have been organized into three sections. The first section contains 50 activities that can be implemented by school districts, school sites, or individual classrooms including "9 to 5"; "Herstory Parade"; and "Not for Sports Alone." The second section contains 13 programs that can be undertaken cooperatively by schools and community organizations including "Community Resource Women in the Schools"; "Billboard Contest"; and "Suitcase Museums." The third section suggests 37 activities that are appropriate for individuals or community organizations including "Traveling Performers"; "Film Series"; and "Street Banners." All the activities described have been suggested by organizers from communities throughout the United States. Where they have been previously implemented, they have been well received. Ten appendixes (half the document) include: (1) Women's History Potpourri (questions and answers concerning the lives of different women); (2) poster sources; (3) biographical information sources; (4) general information sources; (5) a list of traveling exhibits; (6) a list of national organizations; (7) a list of regional desegregation assistance centers; (8) a list of state Sex Equity specialists; (9) a list of women's history performances; and (10) a copy of a congressional resolution designating March as Women's History Month.

Step-by-step guidelines to help educators and community groups implement a National Women's History Week essay contest, in which elementary and secondary students write about women, are provided. Students are encouraged to write about a woman they personally know so that they can conduct an oral history interview. An alternate approach would be to have students focus on women from the past--women they have learned about through classroom lessons. The guidelines contain information about sponsorship and co-sponsorship by educators and business and community groups, costs, essay content, contest rules, the judging process, publicity, the awards event, and prizes. The appendices contain samples of helpful information used in an essay contest sponsored in Sonoma County, California. Included are a letter to school principals, a packet of materials for project contact persons, materials for potential judges, a packet for participating judges, a press release announcing competition, a letter notifying winners, a press release announcing winners, the printed program for the awards event, a certificate of participation, a letter thanking judging panelists, and logos for National Women's History Week. Suitable for elementary level students, this study unit helps increase students' comprehension of the risks involved in a black person's flight from slavery and of Harriet Tubman's success in leading more than 300 slaves to freedom via the Underground Railroad. Five activity suggestions are followed by a reading on the life of Harriet Tubman. Study questions precede a song which may have served as a map and timetable for slaves. The brief document concludes with a list of recommended resources about Harriet Tubman and other related topics. An accompanying game board, which can be ordered from the publisher, leads students through a series of obstacles in their journey from the southern slave states to freedom in the northern United States and Canada. This curriculum guide is designed to facilitate teachers' first efforts to introduce information about women in U.S. history. The guide promotes a multicultural awareness of women's history beginning with the Native Americans and proceeding to current issues of diversity. Activities are divided for grades 1-6 and 7-12 but may be adapted as appropriate. Activities for grades 1-6 include a play about the life of Maria Tallchief; biographies of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Jade Snow Wong, Dolores Huerta, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Harriet Tubman that can be read and used for class discussions and projects; cut-out puppets of the above women; and a "She Did It" wordsearch puzzle. Activities for grades 7-12 include Women's History news reports; research on Women and Work; a poster design contest; a family history; a mock trial for Susan B. Anthony; a dramatic re-enactment of Sojourner Truth's 1851 speech; and a Women's History biography study. Specific strategies for implementation of a women's history focus in the classroom are offered, as well as resource information and addresses of where to receive additional help on the topic. (EH)

This booklet contains biographical information about Bessie Coleman, Nellie Bly, Gertrude Ederle, Sojourner Truth, Chien-Shiung Wu, Yoshiko Uchida, Madam C. J. Walker, Maria Martinez, Jovita Idar, Margaret Bourke-White, Sally Ride, and Sybil Ludington. These women are noted for their important contributions to United States history. It is hoped their lives and contributions inspire other women to become leaders in society as well. A quiz, a list of activities, and discussion questions are provided with guide. This collection of teaching units, developed by the National Women's History Project, includes biographies of women who have made significant contributions in each of 12 different language arts areas. The topics covered include poets, nonfiction writers, fiction writers, and doing research on women writers. Each unit gives a brief biography of the writer, a list of classroom activities, discussion topics, and assignments. These units also may be used as a starting point for the discussion of traditional women's roles and how attitudes and sex roles have changed. (NL)
