Abstract

Information about the [gamma] depth of interaction (DOI) in the crystal can help to improve the resolution uniformity in positron emission tomography cameras by reducing the blurring due to the parallax error. The parallax error is particularly severe for tomographs with small detector-to-detector distance, which is by itself a desirable feature, since it maximizes the detection solid angle and thus sensitivity. In this study we have developed simulations to determine the effect of a particular DOI correction method on resolution for some tomograph and crystal geometries. The considered DOI correction method relies on a double layer crystal configuration where the two crystals have different scintillation decay times. Round and octagonal PET camera geometries were considered. For each geometry two different crystal configurations were simulated: LSO/LSO and LSO/GSO. Empirical data were used to include scintillation decay time into the simulation. For specific configurations examined DOI correction was found to improve the resolution uniformity up to 37%.

6. Comparison of FORE, OSEM and SAGE algorithms to 3DRP in 3D PET using phantom and human subject data

Abstract

Using phantom and human subject data, we have compared a number of reconstruction algorithms to the current 'gold standard' method, 3D Reprojection Method (3DRP), in an effort to validate them as practical 3D reconstruction alternatives for dynamic PET scanning. The algorithms evaluated were (a) Fourier Rebinning (FORE) followed by 2D Filtered Back Projection (2D FBP), (b) FORE followed by Ordered Subsets Expectation-Maximization (OSEM) and (c) FORE followed by Space Alternating Generalized Expectation-Maximization (SAGE). The main benefits of these methods are two-fold: significantly shorter reconstruction times and improved signal-to-noise ratio at matched resolution for the iterative schemes. We demonstrate that FORE + 2D FBP can replace 3DRP with no significant impact on subsequent data analysis. In particular, distribution volume ratios (DVRs) obtained with FORE + 2D FBP differed from those obtained with 3DRP by 0.3 [+ or -] 0.7% (n = 33) and -0.7 [+ or -] 1.1% (n = 27) for cortical and cerebellar input functions, respectively. Both OSEM and SAGE performed well compared to 3DRP, with improved noise characteristics and DVR differences of < 3%.

Abstract

The contribution of the scattered events originating from Radioactivity Outside the tomograph Field of View (ROFOV) is treated differently by different scatter correction algorithms. Using measured data we have evaluated the amount of scatter originating from ROFOV, its axial and transaxial distribution in two energy windows for direct and a subset of oblique planes in 3D PET. Nonuniform distributions were observed with the total contribution found to be non negligible when the amount of ROFOV was comparable to the radioactivity in the Field of View (FOV).

Abstract

The feasibility of a wholebody PET tomograph with the capacity to correct for the parallax error induced by the Depth-Of-Interaction of [Gamma]-rays is assessed through simulation. The experimental energy, depth, and transverse position resolutions of BGO block detector candidates are the main inputs to a simulation that predicts the point source resolution of the Depth Encoding Large Aperture Camera (DELAC). The results indicate that a measured depth resolution of 7 mm (FWHM) is sufficient to correct a substantial part of the parallax error for a point source at the edge of the Field-Of-View. A search for the block specifications and camera ring radius that would optimize the spatial resolution and its uniformity across the Field-Of-View is also presented.

Abstract

A process is described for the electrodeposition of metallic Mo from a highly concentrated, up to 10 M, acetate bath containing sodium molybdate in the presence of a very low concentration of 60 microg/l of bone glue. The effects were investigated of current density, pH, plating time and the presence of electrowinning additives such as saponin, DowFroth, 5-sulphosalicylic acid and bone glue. Bone glue was the only additive which exhibited a positive effect, resulting in a smoother, more adherent deposit. Smooth deposits were obtained in baths with pH less than 6.6 and a water/acetate ratio of 1.9:1. The deposit was amorphous or nano- crystalline and consisted of completely reduced Mo with very little or no oxygen detected. The process is relatively cheap, uses readily available molybdate ions and may be applied to improving the wear resistance of materials., A process is described for the electrodeposition of metallic Mo from a highly concentrated, up to 10 M, acetate bath containing sodium molybdate in the presence of a very low concentration of 60 microg/l of bone glue. The effects were investigated of current density, pH, plating time and the presence of electrowinning additives such as saponin, DowFroth, 5-sulphosalicylic acid and bone glue. Bone glue was the only additive which exhibited a positive effect, resulting in a smoother, more adherent deposit. Smooth deposits were obtained in baths with pH less than 6.6 and a water/acetate ratio of 1.9:1. The deposit was amorphous or nano- crystalline and consisted of completely reduced Mo with very little or no oxygen detected. The process is relatively cheap, uses readily available molybdate ions and may be applied to improving the wear resistance of materials.

Abstract

The clinically oriented NEMA NU-2 2000+ performance standards have been performed on an ADAC molecular coincidence detection dual-head camera. At 1 cm radius, the transverse resolution full-width at half-maximum was measured to be 5.2 (10.0) mm and the axial was 5.0 (10.6) mm. At 10 cm radius, the transverse radial resolution was 4.7 (7.4) mm and the transverse tangential was 8.5 (20.9) mm. The axial resolution was 14.0 (41.1) mm. The peak true count rate was 4370 counts/s at a concentration of 4.3 kBq/ml. The peak noise equivalent count rate (NECR) was 1620 counts/s at 2.9 kBq/ml. The system scatter fraction was 48%. The maximum relative count rate error observed at the NECR peak was -42%. The sensitivity was 1010 counts/s/MBq in the center and 870 counts/s/MBq at an offset of 10 cm. The contrast for the hot spheres ranged from 18.5 (11.6)% to 11.6 (7.9)% for a contrast ratio of 8:1 (4:1). For the cold spheres, it ranged from 41% to 25% with an overall background variability of 7%. The residual error in scatter and attenuation correction was approximately 50%. All measurements were performed at the maximum allowed crystal-to-crystal distance of 810 mm. Index Terms--Dual-head coincidence imaging, NEMA, performance standards.

43. PET Studies of Parkinsonian Patients Treated with Autologous Adrenal Implants

Abstract

ABSTRACT:Transplantation of autologous adrenal medulla tissue into the striatum has recently been proposed as a treatment for Parkinson's disease. We report the use of positron emission tomography (PET) to evaluate patients who had adrenal implants placed into the right caudate. 6-[18F] fluoro-L-dopa (6-FD) scans were performed to study the integrity and activity of the implant, and the nigrostriatal dopamine system before and six weeks after transplantation surgery. [68Ga] Gallium-ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Ga) scans were also performed to assess the blood brain barrier. The Ga scans performed on two patients showed increased permeability of the blood brain barrier at the surgical site. 6-FD PET scans in five patients did not show a consistent change in striatal uptake following adrenal medullary implantation after six weeks. Further assessment of implant viability with 6-FD PET scans after longer follow up may provide useful information if the blood-brain barrier becomes re-established with the passage of time.
