L‘article traite les marqueurs d‘identité dans les fabliaux, vérifiant l’hypothèse selon laquelle les hommes dans les fabliaux sont identifiés par ce qu‘ils font, par le métier qu‘ils exercent plutôt que par leurs caractéristiques physiques, et que les femmes sont soit identifiées par leur mari soit par leurs caractéristiques à elles. L’analyse qualitative et, ensuite, quantitative des fabliaux montre que la quantité d’informations que le lecteur reçoit sur l‘identité d‘un personnage varie d’un fabliau à l’autre, que les auteurs ne différencient les genres selon la quantité des marqueurs d‘identité, selon leurs caractéristiques physiques, que les personnages masculins principaux sont effectivement souvent caractérisés par leur métier, alors que les personnages féminins, dans la grande majorité des cas, ne portent pas le marqueur du métier, à l‘exception des personnages secondaires ou ceux qui ont le même métier.

The aim of the article is to present the approach of the same theme – a girl penetrating in a monastery of monks – in two literary works belonging to different historical ages: the fabliau Li diz De Freire Denize Le Cordelier by Rutebeuf and an episode of the novel Justine or the misfortunes of virtue by the Marquis de Sade. Even though the aims of the two authors diverge, the common narrative structure evocates a fantasy that has survived over the centuries, the main focus of which is the violation of the sacred. It is also out of this common background that the contraries are emphasized at particular levels of the texts. The points analysed in the article include the portrait of the main character, the disguises used so that the “crime” is hidden, the interaction between the actors of the text and their vision of eroticism. In general lines, while Rutebeuf focuses on the public and its wellness, in both senses of amusement and education, Sade seems to write against the public, using a widespread fantasy not to entertain, but rather to vex.

Rutebeuf est un auteur médiéval dont l’œuvre a souvent été reprise au fil du temps. Cet article se consacre aux adaptations poétiques les plus récentes de la matière Rutebeuf par Léo Ferré, Gaston Miron et Ralph Dutli, et s’intéresse au rapport entre l’hypotexte médiéval et ces adaptations des textes sources. L’étude comparative de trois adaptations différentes (réécriture, allusion, traduction) des mêmes sources, au-delà de souligner les différentes postures de traducteur des poètes modernes, met en évidence les ressemblances entre les approches (corpus similaire, importance de la figure de l’auteur, thématiques communes). Ainsi, cet article contribue à la fois à l’étude de la réception de l’œuvre de Rutebeuf et à la réflexion sur la construction d’une identité poétique par le biais de la traduction et de la réécriture de textes médiévaux. Rutebeuf is a medieval author whose poems have often been reworked over time. This article focuses on the most recent poetic adaptations of Rutebeuf by Léo Ferré, Gaston Miron and Ralph Dutli and discusses the relationship between the medieval hypotext and the adaptations of the source texts. The comparative study of three different adaptations (rewriting, allusion, translation) of the same sources, beyond underlining the different postures of modern poet-translators highlights the similarities of the approaches (similar corpus, importance of the author figure, common themes). Thus, this article contributes to the study of the reception of Rutebeuf's work and to the reflection on the construction of a poetic identity through the translation and rewriting of medieval texts.

8. Author Attributions in Medieval Text Collections: An Exploration.

This article examines the role and function of author attributions in multi-text manuscripts containing Dutch, English, French or German short verse narratives. The findings represent one strand of the investigations undertaken by the cross-European project 'The Dynamics of the Medieval Manuscript', which analysed the dissemination of short verse narratives and the principles of organisation underlying the compilation of text collections. Whilst short verse narratives are more commonly disseminated anonymously, there are manuscripts in which authorship is repeatedly attributed to a text or corpus. Through six case studies, this article explores medieval concepts of authorship and how they relate to constructions of authority, whether regarding an empirical figure or a literary construction. In addition, it looks at how authorship plays a role in manuscript compilation, and at the effects of attributions (by author and/or compiler) on reception. The case studies include manuscripts from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries, produced in a range of social and cultural contexts, and featuring some of the most important European authors of short verse narratives: Rutebeuf, Baudouin de Condé, Der Stricker, Konrad von Würzburg, Willem of Hildegaersberch, and Geoffrey Chaucer. The preliminary findings contribute to our understanding of author attributions in text collections from across northern Europe and point towards future lines of enquiry into the role of authorship in medieval textual dissemination. 9. The medieval written evidence.

We tried to show in Chapter 4 how a specific français de Paris may have developed initially through a process of koinéisation in the social and linguistic melting-pot of the medieval city. In this chapter we will see what information may be gleaned from contemporary written documents. If we follow the quantitative methodology pioneered by A. Dees, we might be able to discern in the writing system used in medieval Parisian documents distant traces of the dialect-mixing and variation characteristic of medieval Parisian speech. We will conclude the chapter with general remarks on the city's sociolinguistic structure at the end of the thirteenth century. Although Paris was not a port-city with colonies of speakers drawn from widely scattered areas of the known world, in the thirteenth century it became a dialect melting-pot, and has continued to be one ever since. It attracted relatively large numbers of English-speakers, Flemish-speakers, Italian-speakers, Latin-speakers (see Beaulieux 1927: 112–26), but the most important element in the formation of its patterns of speech was the constant flow, in and out of the city, of speakers of other north Gallo-Romance dialects like Picard, Champenois and Norman, and, of course, HDP. It has been observed that in bourgeoning cities in the modern world, high levels of in-migration and population-mixing induce a corresponding level of dialect-mixing, which may lead eventually to koinéisation (see Manessy 1994: 23). The desirability of a multidimensional approach to linguistic history is easy enough to argue nowadays. What is nothing like so easy is to find the data which would make such a study possible. This chapter must begin with the central and most intractable problem in the book: that of evidence. We will set out the main types of data available in the different periods of Parisian French, with for ever at the back of our mind the basic uncertainty over whether historical sociolinguistics is possible at all (§ 2.1). In the second and third parts we will look at general factors in urban history and dialect development which will help us limit the range of constructions we can place upon our very imperfect data-base. Since language and society are inextricably entwined, any patterns we detect in urban dialect development must be compatible with the patterns identified by urban historians in the development of European cities over the relevant period (§ 2.2). Furthermore, whatever patterns we see in the past must be broadly in line with the insights derived by modern dialectologists from analogous, and infinitely better documented, linguistic situations in the contemporary world. The ‘uniformitarian principle’ is no panacea, but it may be possible to project backwards to obtain a better understanding of earlier stages of the French language (§ 2.3). 11. Le fou et sa maison: Rutebeuf et la topique de la détresse.

Whilst in the narrative discourse the madman's distress and solitude are depicted through the image of the forest, in the thirteenth century allegedly personal poetry, it is the destitution of a squalid room that locks up the madman and his misery. This shift from the narrative to the lyric, to the dit-commonly defined as a type of poetry based on a feigned confession-corresponds to a change of the social background. Unlike the madman of the medieval novel who, lost in the desert of the forest, contrasts with the courtly universe, with the world of the castle, the poet lives his alienation in his home-town. Developing the traditional topics of the badly wed intellectual and of the gambling ruined juggler, Rutebeuf objectifies at the same time a pattern which emphasizes the desolated setting. First, this article propose an analysis of these aspects in order to observe the consolidation of a stereotype noticeable later on in Villon's poetry. This approach implies also the observation of the correspondence between the rhetoric aspect of Rutebeuf's 'madness' and the symptoms of mental illness, a perspective so far less considered by literary criticism. Then, this article questions the expression of madness and poverty in relation to the satire aiming at the mendicant orders and running across Rutebeuf's work. Thus, the desolation of the background itself and the solitary confinement stand for a satirical echo of the saint's conventional settlement. Behind the distorted confidence, the play with literary patterns reveals the parodic portrait of the 'God's fool'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Occupant une place très importante parmi les auteurs français du XIII siècle, Rutebeuf se sert dans sa poésie morale et satirique de l'allégorie, figure rhétorique typique pour le Moyen Age, dans la poésie liée surtout à la thématique du voyage. Dans les suvres de Rutebeuf l'allégorie est jointe le plus souvent à la satire, genre de prédiléction du discours ironique. Se dressant de manière symbolique contre l'écroulement des valeurs traditionnelles l'auteur prend pour l'objet de son ironie la corruption de la société contemporaine, surtout celle des ordres mendinats, coupables selon lui pour l'emprise des vices sur l'humanité. Pour éviter la généralization avec laquelle le systeme allégorique des personifications empreint perspective satirique et ironique Rutebeuf combine les modèles allégoriques différents, créant ainsi une situation a priori dramatique dont témoignent par exemple ses suvres Le débat du croisé et du décroisé, la Leçon sur Hypocrisie et Humilité ou Le dit du mensonge.

Cet article examine les rapports entre le Dit de l’Herberie de Rutebeuf et une version anonyme entièrement en prose, transmise par le ms Paris, BnF, fr. 19152; ce texte contient des vestiges de vers dans des séquences correspondant à la section en vers du poète champenois, mais également des ébauches de versification dans les parties qui sont en symétrie avec la portion de texte que Rutebeuf a composée en prose. Dans ces deux petits dits, qui traitent un sujet à la fois comique et sérieux, la rencontre entre vers et prose, par juxtaposition ou par fusion, permettrait de faire réagir le texte par une sorte d’alchimie de l’écriture: l’intégration des deux modes du discours littéraire confère aux monologues une forte empreinte poétique destinée à donner un éclat nouveau au langage ordinaire, mais elle a aussi comme effet de dissoudre dans la prose la suspicion de mensonge qui pèse sur le je narratif et auquel l’auteur s’identifie implicitement. Ce jeu sur la forme, loin d’avoir une valeur purement esthétique, répercute ses effets sur le sens et rend possible l’expression d’une parole ironique.

18. Mésusages du don et interventions du surnaturel dans quelques textes des xiie et xiiie siècles

L’article illustre les apports et les limites de l’anthropologie sociale pour l’étude de la littérature médiévale, et montre la nécessité d’une historicisation des concepts issus de cette discipline. Pour ce faire, il étudie la question du don dans quatre textes des xiie-xiiie siècles qui articulent un mésusage du don et l’intervention d’un être surnaturel. Le recours à la théorie de Marcel Mauss s’avère possible et fructueux dans le cas de textes promouvant une culture de l’honneur comparable à celle des sociétés étudiées par l’anthropologue ; dans les autres cas, la question du don doit être replacée dans le contexte des conceptions chrétiennes relatives aux biens matériels, aux échanges et à la charité. L’analyse fait apparaître que les textes ordonnent, dans la sphère de l’imaginaire, plusieurs fonctions sociales. D’une part, face à un dominant ayant manqué à ses devoirs de largesse, de charité ou de rétribution, se positionne un héros démuni : chevalier, clerc ou jongleur. D’autre part, face aux carences des biens et des acteurs terrestres, chaque texte met en scène un être surnaturel revêtu d’une fonction compensatoire, qui peut relever du merveilleux, du diabolique ou du divin.

Este artículo propone una arqueología de la cultura que emplee los patrones de movilidad intelectual, las rutas de tráfico de libros o reliquias y las influencias literarias como análisis de los contactos económicos, políticos, comerciales e ideológicos habidos entre la Antigüedad Tardía y la Edad Media. En este sentido, un libro puede entenderse como parte de la cultura material que estudia la arqueología y los itinerarios de difusión de ideas se integran en los parámetros de investigación de la arqueología del espacio. Gracias a este enfoque, puede suplirse la falta de otros elementos (cerámicas, metales…) cuya ausencia en el repertorio arqueológico ha llevado en ocasiones a defender la ruptura de las comunicaciones europeas en algunas coyunturas (caída del Imperio Romano, invasión musulmana). Esta reflexión teórica se aplica al marco de las relaciones disfrutadas entre Asturias y Francia durante los siglos v-xiii. A lo largo de ese tiempo, los contactos culturales fueron continuados y vivieron momentos de esplendor en etapas como el reino de Asturias (siglos viii-x d. C.) o fenómenos como la peregrinación a San Salvador de Oviedo (siglos xi-xiii). En última instancia, la literatura de ambos espacios es un argumento clave en este discurso y una serie de obras asturianas y francesas reflejan esta movilidad intelectual. El artículo concluye, precisamente, con el análisis de dos citas a San Salvador de Oviedo contenidas en la literatura profana francesa del siglo xiii: los poemas de Rutebeuf y un fabliaux., In this article we propose a cultural archaeology that use the patterns of intellectual mobility, the traffic of books and relics and the literary influences for the analysis of the economic, political, commercial and ideological contacts between the Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. In this respect, a book can be understood as part of the material culture that studies the archaeology and the itineraries of ideas join the parameters of investigation of the spatial archaeology. Thanks to this approach, we can be replaced the lack of other elements (ceramics, metals …) whose absence in the archaeological information have led to defending the break of the european communications in some conjunctures (fall of the Roman Empire, moslem invasion). This theoretical reflection have been applied to the scene of the cultural and literary relations between Asturias and France during the 5-13th centuries a. D. Throughout this time, the contacts were continued and periods as the kingdom of Asturias (8-10th centuries) and the peregrination to San Salvador of Oviedo (11-13th centuries) were brilliant moments. In last instance, the literature is a key argument in this speech and a long series of asturian and french works reflect this intellectual mobility. The article concludes, precisely, with the analysis of two references of San Salvador of Oviedo contained in the profane french literature of the 13th century: the poems of Rutebeuf and a fabliaux.

Le stéréotype du vilain, incarnation de la bassesse, ne disparaît pas, perpétué par les proverbes et les textes comiques qui illustrent aussi les stéréotypes de la femme et du prêtre. Mais apparaît un autre personnage, un paysan réhabilité, humanisé, même s’il est encore parfois appelé « vilain », le mot « païsant » étant encore très rare. Les poètes, dont beaucoup sont sans doute d’origine rurale, le montrent hospitalier, patient, voire instruit. Il n’est pas l’objet comme l’est le prêtre de la vindicte publique, ni ne subit de châtiment dégradant. Il exploite ses terres et gère son domaine normalement. The stereotype of the churl (« vilain » or « villanus »), embodiment of baseness, does not disappear in the thirteenth century : on the contrary, it is immortalized by the proverbs and the comic literature which also illustrate the stereotypes of the woman and the priest. But another character appears, a rehabilitated and humanized farmer, even if he is still called sometimes villanus, the word « païsant » (peasant) being yet very rare. The poets, among whom many were doubtless of rural origin, picture him as hospitable, patient, even educated. Unlike the priest, he his not the object of public condemnation and undergoes no degrading punishment. He runs his lands and manages his farm normally. As head of the household (« chef de feu »), with his responsibilities and his autonomy, he occupies a specific position in the society, much as the craftsman, the merchant and the lord. Besides the medieval Caliban, the farmer does have a real existence, and contemporary charters of emancipation are the witnesses of his strength and sometimes of his own language.

Une voix qui parle, qui nous parle même, par delà les siècles : son existence se ressent de manière inexplicable, d'autant plus évidente à la lecture chronologique des pièces, telle qu'elle est proposée par Michel Zink. L'œuvre de Rutebeuf peut pourtant paraître, à bien des égards, multiforme : fabliaux, vies de saints, chansons, dits satiriques, complaintes... Existe-t-il une voix de Rutebeuf ? Son langage, dont la vérité pose problème, est la seule trace que nous ayons de lui : le langage comme outil de la satire et du salut, comme Voie de Paradis et voix du poète. Parce que nous choisissons délibérément d'appeler "poète" celui pour qui, pourtant, ce mot est anachronique. Le personnage du je tantôt affirme haut et fort, tantôt fait preuve d'humilité ; quant au destinataire, il peut passer du statut de complice à celui d'ignorant. Le poète puise ses arguments dans les proverbes populaires comme dans la Bible, parle au nom d'un je fortement individualisé puis au nom d'un nous collectif voire universel, s'oppose au discours d'autrui tout en l'exploitant. En effet, le tissu mensonger se veut opposé au tissage des vers. La vérité reposerait sur le dialectisme d'un constant dialogue sur fond de théâtralité plus ou moins avouée selon les pièces, pourtant, on se rend compte que, finalement, il n'y a que des monologues psychomachiques. Le poète affirme trop souvent voir le vrai d'une part, sa cécité constitutive de l'autre, cherchant pourtant, avec sa voix, à montrer la Voie. La voix du poète se construit donc par charité grâce aux plaies du monde qu'il tente de guérir. En échange, il est également possible de se montrer généreux en lui faisant l'aumône, puisque Rutebeuf est imago Christi à cause de sa pauvreté constitutive. Ainsi qu'imago Dei grâce à son maniement rude, et donc vrai, du Verbe.

L'oeuvre de Rutebeuf n'est pas toute entière une oeuvre ironique. C'est le travail d'une subjectivité qui découvre le moi au miroir du monde. L'ironie et l'auto-ironie offrent à ce "je" le courage d'affirmer sa conscience en face des mots. Elles lui prêtent l'énergie nécessaire à vaincre la force centripète du monde littéraire, à transgresser les lois du genre, à "perdre toutes lois". Et dans ce sens, elles mettent au jour les codes d'une socio-poétique médiévale. Mais la parole ironique est aussi une thérapeutique du "je", l'instrument de son édification consciente en sujet poétique. car l'humilité, condition de la conversion, est sans doute chez Rutebeuf la forme la plus haute du libre arbitre poétique, entendu comme devoir d'"ensemencer" la vérité y compris par "yronie".

This dissertation examines the ways in which the newly emerging commercial society impacted the conception and expression of time in thirteenth century Parisian poet Rutebeuf’s corpus. It does so by examining how Rutebeuf’s narrator employs commercial metonymies, metaphors, and mindsets to manipulate the expression of time for his own benefit. Rather than be a product of his time, time becomes a product of the narrator. The use of figural manifestations of commerce to manipulate time appears to be unique to Rutebeuf and testifies to the influence of the urban environment on his work. The narrator’s manipulation of time would not have been possible if it were not for the new ways of conceptualizing time brought about by the thirteenth century commercial revolution. Rather than fixed and rigid, time with the (re)development of the commercial network became fluid and mutable, allowing the narrator to reshape his past, present, and future.

In this work, I consider a theoretical foundation based on the treatment of literary auctores in the 13th-century latinate literary culture as a useful tool in discerning the development of lyrical self-expression in contemporary Old French dits. I first approach the surviving corpus of works attributed to the writer Rutebeuf in order to determine how scribal treatment of this vernacular author interacted with erudite Latinate literary theory. Critically, how did scribes manipulate the space in which Rutebeuf existed as a writer? How are the varied forms of transmission - from large swaths of unified sections to the inclusion of one single dit within a manuscript of a few hundred folia - to be understood within the framework of an active literary culture? I argue that the lively manipulation and appropriation of Rutbeuf's works within various textual and thematic environments attest to a wider discursive reception of the author as a true source of experiential knowledge. Moreover, the self-portrayal that Rutebeuf effected through the construction of his persona is further proof that the vernacular writer himself was a part of this evolving discursive process. In order to justify the claim that this reception was allowed by a wider re-evaluation of the function of vernacular writers, I apply the same approach with a near contemporary of Rutebeuf, Adam de la Halle. As melodic composition and oral performativity risk eroding the existence of the lyrical writer within the work, how did Adam operate within his formative literary sphere as an author? What was the nature of the connection between the writer and his work that communicated ownership over sense and interpretation by the creator of the text? The game of monophony and polyphony in mediating the voices that constitute a work is equally as critical - how did Adam reflect himself from the chansons onto his jeux?
