The fundamental characteristics of liquid electrode plasma (LEP), a pulsed plasma source for optical emission spectrometry, were investigated. Two distinct phases were observed during the process of pulsed plasma generation, namely bubble generation and active plasma discharge. The ionization efficiency of the LEP, with Mg as a representative analyte, was gauged from the ratio of Mg II 279.553 nm to Mg I 285.213 nm emission and was found to increase from about 5% to 20% in a close-to-linear fashion with the discharge voltage from 800 V to 1200 V. The Mg II/Mg I ratio of the LEP was 2.5 to 3 orders of magnitude less than that typically offered by an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) but was comparable to other solution-based glow discharges. It was found that an off-time interval of more than 150 ms between successive discharge pulses was required to obtain a stable pulse-to-pulse discharge current. Temporally resolved emissions of Mg II 279.6 nm, Mg I 285.2 nm, Fe I 373.5 nm, OH band head at 306 nm, and Hα line at 656.3 nm showed that the background species (OH band and Hα line) reached their maximum emission intensities at around 0.5 ms to 0.7 ms with respect to the onset of the discharge pulse whereas the maximum emissions were observed between 0.7 ms to 0.9 ms for analyte species (Mg and Fe lines). The electron density observed in the present work was in the range from 5.7 × 1015 cm−3 to 8.2 × 1015 cm−3, which was similar to those found in an analytical ICP. The temporal averaged OH rotational temperature was 3300 K, which was comparable to the values of an analytical ICP and solution-based glow discharges. By contrast, the temporally averaged Fe I excitation temperature was around 8900 K, which was even higher than that of an analytical ICP and roughly triple the values obtained by techniques based on glow discharge of liquid samples.

To perform direct enrichment assay on gaseous uranium hexafluoride (UF6) with laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), the dominant spectral-line features, evolution of the signal and background of the U II 424.437 nm line, and its Stark width and shift, were studied as a function of UF6 gas pressure and pulse energy of a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser. Vapor pressure of UF6 was found to be the most important parameter for LIBS analysis of gaseous UF6. Spectral congestion with numerous U lines of high excitation potential was observed and signal-to-background ratio (SBR) was low for measurements with 80 Torr UF6. Only when both UF6 vapor pressure and laser pulse energy were low, for example, less than 20 Torr pressure and 30 mJ pulse energy, the resultant LIBS spectra from gaseous UF6 resembled those obtained from solid U samples. The experimental data also suggest that U and F atoms recombine back to UF6 after the laser pulse. The U emission was found to decay fast with a persistent background signal, degrading SBR with delay time. Systematic positive biases were found for UF6 enrichment assays performed with the 235U–238U line pair at 424.412–424.437 nm, which was confirmed to be caused by self-absorption. Even with optimization of experimental parameters and incorporation of a self-absorption term into the spectral-fitting algorithm, to reduce and compensate for self-absorption, self-absorption is still a main factor limiting accurate UF6 enrichment assay. The use of another spectral window which contains no resonance lines is a prospective solution for the self-absorption issue.

Calcium fluoride formed by the reaction between ammonium bifluoride and calcium chloride was investigated as a dominating matrix for quantitative analysis by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Transformation from a solid sample to the calcium fluoride-based matrix permitted quantitative analysis based on calibration standards made from elemental standards. A low abundance stable calcium isotope, i.e. 44Ca+, was monitored as the internal standard for quantitative analysis by LA-ICP-MS. Correlation coefficient factors for multiple elements were obtained with values over 0.999. The results for multiple elements in a certified reference material of soil (NIST SRM 2710a) agreed with the certified values in the range of expanded uncertainty, indicating the present method was valid for quantitation of elements in solid samples.

We investigate the distribution of atoms and diatomic metal-oxide molecules in femtosecond laser-induced plasmas generated at and after the laser beam focal plane, where non-linear phenomena give rise to the formation of a weakly ionized air plasma channel. We use direct plasma imaging and optical emission spectroscopy to study plasma expansion, and the associated physical and chemical separation processes. Plasma splitting occurs upon the interaction of the weakly ionized plasma with the sample and is accompanied by a change in the spatio-temporal distribution of the molecules and atoms compared to sampling at the focus. Furthermore, molecular emission is favored at specific locations and is enhanced over atomic emission as the sample is moved underneath the laser focus. These findings support the ability to enhance or impede the formation of molecular versus atomic species at specific spatio-temporal locations in the laser-induced plasma.

Chemical imaging applications using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) involve laser ablation sampling at interfaces or boundaries between materials with different thermophysical and optical properties, leading to the formation of two initially isolated plasmas. The mechanisms of mixing in these plasmas and their direct implications on spectral emission and chemical imaging remain largely unknown. We investigate the mixing dynamics of isolated plasmas produced using femtosecond (fs) laser pulses at the interface between two different model Cu and Sn–Pb samples. Specifically, we study the spatial and temporal mixing dynamics and outer plasma expansion dynamics of the fs plasma components. The time-resolved degree of component mixing, horizontal and vertical expansion, mixing speed, and temperature and electron density of the heterogeneous plasma are characterized. We report the influence of femtosecond (fs) laser weakly ionized air channel on characteristics of plasma induced from fs-laser ablation of solid Zr metal target. A novel method to create high temperature, low electron density plasma with intense elemental emission and weak bremsstrahlung emission was demonstrated. Weakly ionized air channel was generated as a result of a non-linear phenomenon. Two-dimensional time-resolved optical-emission images of plasma plumes were taken for plume dynamics analysis. Dynamic physical properties of filament channels were simulated. In particular, we investigated the influence of weakly ionized air channel on the evolution of solid plasma plume. Plasma plume splitting was observed whilst longer weakly ionized air channel formed above the ablation spot. The domination mechanism for splitting is attributed to the long-lived underdense channel created by fs-laser induced weakly ionization of air. The evolutions of atomic/molecular emission intensity, peak broadening, and plasma temperature were analyzed, and the results show that the part of plasma entering weakly ionized air channel features higher initial temperature, lower electron density and faster decay.

Solid sampling and analysis methods, such as laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), are challenged by matrix effects and calibration difficulties. Matrix-matched standards for external calibration are seldom available and it is difficult to distribute spikes evenly into a solid matrix as internal standards. While isotopic ratios of the same element can be measured to high precision, matrix-dependent effects in the sampling and analysis process frustrate accurate quantification and elemental ratio determinations. Here we introduce a potentially general solid matrix transformation approach entailing chemical reactions in molten ammonium bifluoride (ABF) salt that enables the introduction of spikes as tracers or internal standards. Proof of principle experiments show that the decomposition of uranium ore in sealed PFA fluoropolymer vials at 230 °C yields, after cooling, new solids suitable for direct solid sampling by LA. When spikes are included in the molten salt reaction, subsequent LA-ICP-MS sampling at several spots indicate that the spikes are evenly distributed, and that U-235 tracer dramatically improves reproducibility in U-238 analysis. Precisions improved from 17% relative standard deviation for U-238 signals to 0.1% for the ratio of sample U-238 to spiked U-235, a factor of over two orders of magnitude. These results introduce the concept of solid matrix transformation (SMT) using ABF, and provide proof of principle for a new method of incorporating internal standards into a solid for LA-ICP-MS. This new approach, SMT-LA-ICP-MS, provides opportunities to improve calibration and quantification in solids based analysis. Looking forward, tracer addition to transformed solids opens up LA-based methods to analytical methodologies such as standard addition, isotope dilution, preparation of matrix-matched solid standards, external calibration, and monitoring instrument drift against external calibration standards.

Experimental investigations into the characteristics of laser-induced plasmas indicate that LIBS provides a relatively inexpensive and easily replicable laboratory technique to isolate and measure reactions germane to understanding aspects of high-explosive detonations under controlled conditions. Spectral signatures and derived physical parameters following laser ablation of aluminum, graphite and laser-sparked air are examined as they relate to those observed following detonation of high explosives and as they relate to shocked air. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) reliably correlates reactions involving atomic Al and aluminum monoxide (AlO) with respect to both emission spectra and temperatures, as compared to small- and large-scale high-explosive detonations. Atomic Al and AlO resulting from laser ablation and a cited small-scale study, decay within ∼10-5 s, roughly 100 times faster than the Al and AlO decay rates (∼10-3 s) observed following the large-scale detonation of an Al-encased explosive. Temperatures and species produced in laser-sparked air are compared to those produced with laser ablated graphite in air. With graphite present, CN is dominant relative to N2+. In studies where the height of the ablating laser's focus was altered relative to the surface of the graphite substrate, CN concentration was found to decrease with laser focus below the graphite surface, indicating that laser intensity is a critical factor in the production of CN, via reactive nitrogen.

Recently, laser ablated molecular isotopic spectrometry (LAMIS) has expanded its capability to explore molecules formation mechanism in laser-induced plasma in addition to isotope analysis. LAMIS is a powerful tool for tracking the origination of atoms that is involved in formation of investigated molecules by labeling atoms with their isotopic substitution. The evolutionary formation pathways of organic molecules, especially of C2 dimers and CN radicals, were frequently reported. However, very little is known about the formation pathways for metallic radicals and heterodimers in laser ablated plasma. This research focuses on elucidating the formation pathways of AlO radicals in femtosecond laser ablated plasma from 18O-labeled Al2O3 pellet. Plasmas expanding with strong forward bias in the direction normal to the sample surface were generated in the wake of a weakly ionized channel created by a femtosecond laser. The formation mechanism of AlO and influence of air were investigated with multiple plasma diagnostic methods such as monochromatic fast gating imaging, spatiotemporal resolved optical emission spectroscopy, and LAMIS. An advanced LAMIS fitting procedure was used to deduce the spatiotemporal distributions of Al18O and Al16O number densities and also their ratios. We found that the Al16O/Al18O number density ratio is higher for plasma portion closer to the sample surface, which suggests that chemical reactions between the plasma plume and ambient air are more intense at the tail of the plasma. The results also reveals that direct association of free Al and O atoms is the main mechanism for the formation of AlO at the early stage of the plasma. To the contrast, chemical reactions between plasma materials and ambient oxygen molecules and the isotope exchange effect are the dominant mechanisms of the formation of AlO and evolution of Al16O/Al18O number density ratio at the late stage of the plasma.

Through computer simulation on experimentally acquired optical spectra, uranium isotopic analysis by laser ablation molecular isotopic spectrometry and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy were studied. The use of only one spectral feature, either the strong UO band at 593.55 nm or the nearby U I 593.382 nm line, are similar in precisions (~ 1.5% in absolute 235U abundances). Precision improves to 0.72% with the use of a group of U atomic lines from 591.6 to 596.5 nm. The use of both molecular bands and atomic lines further advances the precision to 0.42% and compares well with the U II 424.437 nm single-line benchmark (0.48% precision).

Direct solid sampling by laser ablation into an inductively coupled plasma synchronous vertical dual view optical emission spectroscope (LA-SVDV-ICP-OES) was used for the elemental analysis of nutrient elements Ca, B, Mn, Mg, K, and Zn and essential (non-metallic) elements P and S in plant materials. The samples were mixed with paraffin as a binder, an approach that provides better cohesion of the particles in the pellets in addition to supplying carbon to serve as an internal standard (atomic line C I 193.027 nm) as a way to compensate for matrix effects, and/or variations in the ablation process. Precision was in the range of 1-8% relative standard deviation (RSD) with limit of detection in the range of 0.4-1 mg/kg-1 and 25-640 mg/kg-1 for metallic and non-metallic elements, respectively.

We evaluated the performance of laser ablation analysis techniques such as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), laser ablation inductively coupled optical emission spectrometry (LA-ICP-OES), and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), in comparison with that of ICP-OES using aqueous solutions for the quantification of sulfur (S) in edible salts from different geographical origins. We found that the laser ablation based sampling techniques were not influenced by loss of S, which was observed in ICP-OES with aqueous solutions for a certain salt upon their dissolution in aqueous solutions, originating from the formation of volatile species and precipitates upon their dilution in water. Although detection of S using direct laser sampling with LA-ICP-MS has well-known isobaric and polyatomic interferences, LIBS and LA-ICP-OES showed good accuracy in the detection of S for all salts. LIBS also provided the ability to identify the dominant chemical form in which S is present in salts. Correlation between S and oxygen, observed in LIBS spectra, provided chemical information about the presence of S2- or [Formula: see text], which are associated with the origin and quality of edible salts.

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) operated under ambient pressure has been evaluated for isotopic analysis of uranium in real-world samples such as soil, with U concentrations in the single digit percentage levels. The study addresses the requirements for spectral decomposition of 235U and 238U atomic emission peaks that are only partially resolved. Although non-linear least-square fitting algorithms are typically able to locate the optimal combination of fitting parameters that best describes the experimental spectrum even when all fitting parameters are treated as free independent variables, the analytical results of such an unconstrained free-parameter approach are ambiguous. In this work, five spectral decomposition algorithms were examined, with different known physical properties (e.g., isotopic splitting, hyperfine structure) of the spectral lines sequentially incorporated into the candidate algorithms as constraints. It was found that incorporation of such spectral-line constraints into the decomposition algorithm is essential for the best isotopic analysis. The isotopic abundance of 235U was determined from a simple two-component Lorentzian fit on the U II 424.437 nm spectral profile. For six replicate measurements, each with only fifteen laser shots, on a soil sample with U concentration at 1.1% w/w, the determined 235U isotopic abundance was (64.6 ± 4.8)%, and agreed well with the certified value of 64.4%. Another studied U line - U I 682.691 nm possesses hyperfine structure that is comparatively broad and at a significant fraction as the isotopic shift. Thus, 235U isotopic analysis with this U I line was performed with spectral decomposition involving individual hyperfine components. For the soil sample with 1.1% w/w U, the determined 235U isotopic abundance was (60.9 ± 2.0)%, which exhibited a relative bias about 6% from the certified value. The bias was attributed to the spectral resolution of our measurement system - the measured line width for this U I line was larger than its isotopic splitting. Although not the best emission line for isotopic analysis, this U I emission line is sensitive for element analysis with a detection limit of 500 ppm U in the soil matrix; the detection limit for the U II 424.437 nm line was 2000 ppm.

The fundamental analytical accuracies and precisions attainable by laser ablation molecular isotopic spectrometry (LAMIS), with emphasis on the impacts from spectral interferences and measurement noise, were investigated by means of computer simulation. The study focused on the analysis of a minor isotope at sub- to single-percentage abundance level. With a natural abundance about 1.1% for 13C, the C2 Swan band (d 3Πg-a 3Πu) with Δν = + 1 was selected as a representative system. The characteristics (e.g., noise amplitude and distribution, signal strength, and signal-to-background ratio) of the simulated spectra were experimentally characterized. Partial least square (PLS) regression was used to extract isotopic information from the simulated molecular spectra. In the absence of any spectral interference and with the use of a calibration set consisting of eleven isotopic standards, the theoretical accuracies and precisions with signal accumulation from 100 laser shots are about 0.002% and 0.001%, respectively, in absolute percentage abundance of 13C. The theoretical analytical accuracies slightly degrade, but are adequate for many applications, to 0.004% and 0.008% respectively, for calibrations involving only three and two isotopic standards. It was found that PLS regression is not only immune to both source-flicker and photon-shot noise, but is also effective in differentiating the spectral patterns from the analyte against those from spectral interferences. The influences of spectral interference from single or multiple atomic emission lines were simulated, and new ways to minimize their impacts were formulated and demonstrated. It was found that the wavelength range selected for the computation of the normalization factor should not contain any spectral-interfering peak, and a properly chosen wavelength range increases the tolerance of spectral interference by at least one order of magnitude. With matrix-matched calibration standards, the precisions (expressed as RSDs of the determined 13C isotopic abundances) degrade from ∼ 1% in the absence of spectral interference, to ∼ 3%, 10% and 20% with multiple spectral-interfering peaks that are 10 ×, 100 × and 1000 ×, respectively, stronger than the molecular bandhead of the analyte. The study concluded that PLS regression is a powerful and indispensable tool for extraction of isotopic information from LAMIS spectra.

While femtosecond Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy has been studied in the macro-scale (i.e. ablation crater sizes of tens to hundreds of micrometers), the spectral emission mechanisms at the micron/sub-micron scale remain largely unknown, mainly because of the challenges associated with spectral emission acquisition from the limited amounts of ablated mass at these small lengthscales. In this work we study the limits of detection, the laser-induced plasma properties and spectral emission efficiency of Cu at the micron/submicron scale. Although the corresponding number electron densities and temperatures are similar to those reported for macroscale laser ablation, our findings suggest less efficient luminous spectral emission per ablated volume as we scale down in laser energy and crater sizes. These results provide a first insight into fs laser-induced plasma properties at the micron/sub-micron scale regime.

A new remote sensing technology for real-time isotopic analysis is introduced: Femtosecond Filament-Induced Laser Ablation Molecular Isotopic Spectrometry (F2-LAMIS). The technique combines femtosecond (fs) laser filamentation and ablation-based molecular isotopic spectroscopy, thereby enabling isotopic analysis of samples at a distance, in ambient air and at ambient pressure conditions. Isotopic analysis of zirconium (Zr) samples by F2-LAMIS is demonstrated, and the molecular and atomic emission intensity, and properties of the filament-induced plasma generated at different filament propagation distances were investigated. Spectral fitting of F2-LAMIS spectra enabled semi-quantitative isotopic analysis without the use of calibration standards, which was independent of the filament propagation distance for the studied range. This technology provides new capabilities for direct isotopic ratio measurements at remote distances.

A study of the gas dynamics of the vapor plume generated during laser ablation was conducted including a counterpropagating internal shock wave. The density, pressure, and temperature distributions between the external shock wave front and the sample surface were determined by solving the integrated conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy. The positions of the shock waves and the contact surface (boundary that separates the compressed ambient gas and the vapor plume) were obtained when the incident laser energy that is transferred to the vapor plume and to the background gas, E, and the vaporized sample mass, M, are specified. The values for E and M were obtained from a comparison of the calculated trajectories of the external shock wave and the contact surface with experimental results for a copper sample under different laser fluences. Thus E and M, which are the two dominant parameters for laser ablation and which cannot be measured directly, can be determined. In addition, the internal shock wave propagation within the vapor plume was determined; the interaction of the internal shock wave with the sample may be one of the mechanisms inducing liquid sample ejection during laser ablation.
