5. Helping Teachers To Actively Choose To Integrate Technology in the Required Language Arts Curriculum through Staff Development and Mentoring.

Abstract

This practicum was developed to increase the use of instructional technology as a teaching strategy among elementary classroom teachers by implementing a series of inservice workshops and mentoring programs. Workshops designed with teacher input were developed and presented to the staff where the writer worked. Interviews were conducted individually with staff members and mentoring teachers. Instruments were developed to be utilized for noting and analyzing activities and workshop attendance. Model lessons were presented for the teachers. Guidelines were provided for use with new faculty members. Analysis of the data revealed that teachers were more willing to integrate technology into their regular language curriculum and were better prepared to use technology as a teaching strategy. The lesson plans and materials which were left at the school served as both guidelines and references. Two figures show the frequency of use and the number of teachers integrating technology. Appendices include the teacher survey; application record; face to face teacher form; agendas for workshops; workshop attendance; troubleshooting manual; and 1996 training plan. (Author/AEF)

7. EMBODIMENT AND GENDERED SUBJECTIVITY IN UKRAINIAN WOMEN’S FILM, POETRY, AND PROSE DURING PERESTROIKA (1985-1991)

Abstract

In this dissertation, I look to Ukrainian women’s literary and filmic contributions in the final Soviet years of perestroika to recontextualize and reconsider feminist and gendered epistemologies in Eastern Europe. I view the last Soviet Ukrainian filmmakers, writers, and artists as groundbreaking in their conceptualization a new, more “liberal” vision of nation, especially through their increasingly open and subversive critiques of the Soviet state. I locate perestroika as a powerful moment in Ukraine’s histories of resistance to the weaponization of colonialist and imperialist mythologies, past and present. For women in particular, the stakes of this shifting articulation of nation became part of a bolder and more visible feminist consciousness, although not necessarily named as such. I contribute critical insight to the ways in which gender operated in dialogue with the idea of Ukrainian nationhood during perestroika and glasnost, while at the same time, considering how the works under examination have contributed to contemporary discourses of gender, violence, and nation within and beyond Ukraine. By giving new attention to Ukrainian feminist engagement with queer and transnational feminisms, I challenge narrow and incomplete, and thus colonialist, narratives about gender and sexuality in Ukraine and Eastern Europe more broadly, bringing visibility to feminism’s development not as a corollary of or in relation to Western discourses, but as a product of its own cultural, political, and ideological conditions. In so doing, I situate Ukrainian feminist critiques within broader transnational feminist discourses, especially regarding women’s ties to the idea of the nation, both materially, through their bodies, and psychically, as an imagined intimacy, constituted through a sense of belonging.

18. Teacher Burnout: A Comparison Between Title I and Non-Title I Elementary School Teachers

Abstract

With school reform and teacher accountability on the forefront of the educational landscape, attention has turned to investigating why so many teachers leave the profession after a relatively short time. Burnout is often cited as a major contributor to this teacher exodus. While many studies have focused on teacher burnout relative to the specific tasks that teachers perform and on the populations they serve, there is no research on how teacher burnout differs between Title I and non-Title I schools in an urban school district in Virginia. The purpose of this causal-comparative study was to investigate if teachers’ perceptions of burnout including emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment, differ between the two types of schools in a single school district. The sample, 145 elementary teachers from Title I and non-Title I schools, voluntarily completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory- Educators Survey (MBI-ES) through SurveyMonkey® online. Results from the self-reported instrument were analyzed for significant statistical differences between scores in the areas of personal accomplishment, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization between the Title I and non-Title I teachers using a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). The results indicated that there is no statistical difference in teachers’ perception of overall burnout, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment between the Title I and non-Title I school teachers in this urban school district in Virginia. Abstract

A large relief at the Musee du Louvre, Paris (R.F. 353), is one of several examples of the Madonna and Child in terracotta now widely accepted as by Donatello (c. 1386-1466). A medium commonly used in antiquity, terracotta fell out of favor until the Quattrocento, when central Italian artists became reacquainted with it. Terracotta was cheap and versatile, and sculptors discovered that it was useful for a range of purposes, including modeling larger works, making life casts, and molding. Reliefs of the half-length image of the Madonna and Child became a particularly popular theme in terracotta, suitable for domestic use or installation in small chapels. Donatello's Louvre Madonna presents this theme in a variation unusual in both its form and its approach. In order to better understand the structure and the meaning of this work, I undertook to make some clay works similar to or suggestive of it. This research allowed me some insight into the way this deep relief is constructed and led me to consider the possible physical context and function of the work. Considering the material aspects of the Louvre Madonna led me to see how the compositional focus on the veil and the specificity Donatello gave it suggest that this object is central to the meaning of the relief.
