Marine ecosystems and their associated biodiversity sustain life on Earth and hold intrinsic value. Critical marine ecosystem services include maintenance of global oxygen and carbon cycles, production of food and energy, and sustenance of human wellbeing. However marine ecosystems are swiftly being degraded due to the unsustainable use of marine environments and a rapidly changing climate. The fundamental challenge for the future is therefore to safeguard marine ecosystem biodiversity, function, and adaptive capacity whilst continuing to provide vital resources for the global population. Here, we use foresighting/hindcasting to consider two plausible futures towards 2030: a business-as-usual trajectory (i.e. continuation of current trends), and a more sustainable but technically achievable future in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We identify key drivers that differentiate these alternative futures and use these to develop an action pathway towards the desirable, more sustainable future. Key to achieving the more sustainable future will be establishing integrative (i.e. across jurisdictions and sectors), adaptive management that supports equitable and sustainable stewardship of marine environments. Conserving marine ecosystems will require recalibrating our social, financial, and industrial relationships with the marine environment. While a sustainable future requires long-term planning and commitment beyond 2030, immediate action is needed to avoid tipping points and avert trajectories of ecosystem decline. By acting now to optimise management and protection of marine ecosystems, building upon existing technologies, and conserving the remaining biodiversity, we can create the best opportunity for a sustainable future in 2030 and beyond.

This essay explores shifting scientific understandings of fish and the evolution of fisheries science, and it grapples with colonialism as a system of power. We trace the rise of fisheries science to a time when Western nation-states were industrializing fishing fleets and competing for access to distant fishing grounds. A theory of fishing called "maximum sustainable yield" (MSY) that understands fish species in aggregate was espoused. Although alternatives to MSY have been developed, decision-making continues to be informed by statistical models developed within fisheries science. A challenge for structured management systems now rests in attending to different systems of knowledge and addressing local objectives, values, and circumstances. In this article, we examine how governance can be more effectively integrated with quantitative evaluation methods in applied resource management. Governance refers to how societies organize to make decisions in ways that influence management choices (e.g., harvest allocation), such as levels of participation, the inclusion of different types of knowledge, and legitimacy of processes that lead to decisions. Using a fisheries example, we show that a failure to consider the governance context for quantitative evaluation of alternative management strategies may lead to unexpected consequences or break points in decision-making, bias estimates of risk and returns from management choices, and mask the potential for undesirable social and ecological outcomes.

Improving fisheries management is a key challenge in addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and support Goals 1 (No Poverty) and 14 (Life Below Water). However, sustaining the ocean’s living resources has important dimensions beyond food security, such as cultural values, which might be of equal importance in some settings. Fisheries management faces special challenges when there is a mismatch between biological units and management units, e.g., when ecological spatial structures are not reflected in how catch limits are set. This might result in overexploitation and even the loss of sub-stocks. We use a spatially structured ecological-economic model parameterized for a pelagic schooling fish to examine how the benefits of implementing spatially differentiated fisheries management depend on biological parameters. We focus on a subset of socio-ecological variables, i.e., fisheries yield, present value of economic surplus, and loss of spawning sites (which might be linked to loss of cultural values) to demonstrate that, in theory, ideally differentiated spatial management can be implemented without exact information about recruitment behavior. For imperfectly differentiated spatial management, however, knowledge about recruitment behavior becomes key to avoiding economic losses and to sustaining stock structure, especially when there is large spatial heterogeneity in biological parameters. Knowledge about variability in site-specific productivity determines the expectation of achievable sustainable harvest levels. Further research on such ecological issues is therefore warranted, both for ecological as well as economic reasons.

Marine spatial planning (MSP) is occurring throughout the world, as communities and nation-states seek to resolve spatial conflicts and competition in coastal areas and reduce the impacts of human uses on marine biodiversity. The Marine Plan Partnership (MaPP) in British Columbia, Canada, is a successful example of collaborative marine planning between First Nations governments and the British Columbia provincial government, achieving the protection of ecological and cultural values, while supporting sustainable economic activities. The collaborative planning process was pre-dated by territorial marine planning by each participating First Nation, which allowed for the protection of First Nations governance and economy, cultural values and activities, and resource management priorities.

Under what conditions can an aboriginal fishing community keep a commercial fishery closed because of persistent low stock abundance when the federal government insists on opening it to commercial fishing? This paper explores a decades long effort by the Haida Nation to protect local herring stocks on Haida Gwaii through a precautionary approach to commercial fishing, recently resulting in a Federal Court-granted injunction that prevented the Canadian Minister of Fisheries and Oceans from opening a commercial herring fishery on Haida Gwaii in 2015. The successful effort by the Haida Nation to protect herring stocks ultimately required a combination of strategies involving confrontation, negotiation and litigation that occurred across two management scales (local and coast-wide) and two levels of dispute resolution. Strategies were successful as a result of four key factors: (a) ongoing conservation concerns about probable harm to herring populations, (b) the existence of aboriginal rights that raises standards for federal government consultation and accommodation, (c) an existing negotiated co-management agreement between the Haida and Canada about the area where most herring stocks are located, and (d) strategic interactions among local and coast-wide forums where herring closures were debated.

We explore a “Go With the Older Fish” (GWOF) mechanism of learned migration behaviour for exploited fish populations, where recruits learn a viable migration path by randomly joining a school of older fish. We develop a non-age-structured biomass model of spatially independent spawning sites with local density dependence, based on Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii). We compare a diffusion (DIFF) strategy, where recruits adopt spawning sites near their natal site without regard to older fish, with GWOF, where recruits adopt the same spawning sites, but in proportion to the abundance of adults using those sites. In both models, older individuals return to their previous spawning site. The GWOF model leads to higher spatial variance in biomass. As total mortality increases, the DIFF strategy results in an approximately proportional decrease in biomass among spawning sites, whereas the GWOF strategy results in abandonment of less productive sites and maintenance of high biomass at more productive sites. A DIFF strategy leads to dynamics comparable to non-spatially structured populations. While the aggregate response of the GWOF strategy is distorted, non-stationary and slow to equilibrate, with a production curve that is distinctly flattened and relatively unproductive. These results indicate that fishing will disproportionately affect populations with GWOF behaviour.

Consideration should be taken of including spatial structure in the models on which stock assessments are based. Abstract A simulation-estimation approach is used to evaluate the efficacy of stock assessment methods that incorporate various levels of spatial complexity. The evaluated methods estimate historical and future biomass for a situation that roughly mimics Pacific herring Clupea pallasii at Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, Canada. The baseline operating model theorizes ten areas arranged such that there is post-recruitment dispersal among all areas. Simulated data (catches, catch age-composition, estimates of spawning stock biomass and its associated age structure) generated for each area are analyzed using estimation methods that range in complexity from ignoring spatial structure to explicitly modelling ten areas. Estimation methods that matched the operating model in terms of spatial structure performed best for hindcast performance and short-term forecasting, i.e., adding spatial structure to assessments improved estimation performance. Even with similar time trajectories among sub-stocks, accounting for spatial structure when conducting the assessment leads to improved estimates of spawning stock biomass. In contrast, assuming spatial variation in productivity when conducting assessments did not appreciably improve estimation performance, even when productivity actually varied spatially. Estimates of forecast biomass and of spawning stock biomass relative to the unfished level were poorer than estimates of biomass for years with data, i.e., hindcasts. Overall, the results of this study further support efforts to base stock assessments for small pelagic fishes on spatially-structured population dynamics models when there is a reasonable likelihood of identifying the sub-stocks that should form the basis for the assessment.

Small-scale indigenous abalone fisheries on the northwest coast of Canada persisted for at least two millennia prior to modern commercial and recreational fisheries that lasted for four decades before collapsing, causing a coast wide closure that remains today. What traditional governance and stewardship practices fostered resilient fisheries along Canada's northwest coast and how might they inform collaborative institutions that foster ecologically sustainable and socially just coastal fisheries in future? In collaboration with two coastal First Nations, a policy analysis of northern abalone ( G aal G uuhlkyan –Skidegate Haida, ǧaɫǧṇiq –Heiltsuk, Haliotis kamtschatkana) stewardship was conducted to assess where traditional and modern fisheries governance and management aligned or failed to align with seven theoretical principles of social-ecological resilience. The analysis revealed that traditional principles of reciprocity and contingent proprietorship of clan-based fishing areas aligned with resilience principles whereas contemporary centralized decision-making and region-wide management policies did not. Moreover, current issues of power asymmetry and lack of trust need to be addressed to build a future indigenous-state governance approach to coastal fisheries. This research demonstrates how indigenous resource governance and stewardship practices generated over millennia of social learning and experimentation offer insights that could be broadly applied to foster resilient coastal fisheries today.

We report a series of three experiments designed to assess the extent to which people can infer the temperature of water on the basis of the sound that can be heard when it is poured from one vessel into another. Experiment 1 demonstrates that people can tell whether water is hot or cold solely on the basis of the sound that it makes when poured into a receptacle made from one of four different materials (glass, porcelain, paper and plastic). Experiment 2 reveals the existence of an implicit association between the pouring sounds and the notion of a particular temperature (hot or cold). Finally, experiment 3 demonstrates that the perception of temperature can be changed by artificially modifying the sonic properties of the sound that hot and cold water makes when poured into a receptacle. Potential applications for these results in terms of sensory marketing and modernist dining are discussed. Practical Applications The idea that temperature is a multisensory construct could be of particular interest to contexts such as food and drink perception, media (e.g., radio, television and digital environments), electronic drinks dispensers and household appliances, where the apparent temperature of a beverage could potentially be modified in order to create (or modify) particular consumption experiences.

We report an experiment designed to investigate the consequences of manipulating the pitch of the background auditory stimulation on the taste of food. The participants in the present study evaluated four pieces of cinder toffee while listening to two auditory soundtracks, presented in a random order. One soundtrack was designed to be more crossmodally (or "synaesthetically") congruent with a bitter-tasting food whereas the other soundtrack was designed to be more congruent with a sweet-tasting food instead. The participants rated each sample using three computer based line scales: One scale was anchored with the words bitter and sweet. The second scale required participants to localize the taste/flavour percept elicited by the food (at the front vs. back of their mouth). The third scale involved participants giving a hedonic evaluation of the foodstuff. As expected, the cinder toffee samples tasted while listening to the presumptively 'bitter' soundtrack were rated as tasting significantly more bitter than when exactly the same foodstuff was evaluated while listening to the 'sweet' soundtrack instead. These results provide the first convincing empirical demonstration that the crossmodal congruency of a background soundtrack can be used to modify the taste (and presumably also flavour) of a foodstuff. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

Background Surgical clipping of intracranial aneurysms is the gold standard for the prevention of rupture. However, the biological processes that occur following clipping are poorly understood. To better understand these effects, retrieved and clipped human intracranial aneurysms were examined histologically. Methods At autopsy, 17 aneurysms from 10 patients were retrieved 3–21 days after clipping. The tissues were embedded in paraffin, and microtome sections were stained using hematoxylin–eosin and Movat pentachrome. Using light microscopy, clip placement relative to the internal elastic lamina of the parent artery, endothelialization of the aneurysm neck, thrombus organization inside the aneurysm sac, inflammation in the sac, wall, and parent artery, and atherosclerotic changes were determined. Results Despite complete reconstruction of the artery with the clip, diseased vessel wall was frequently observed outside the clip. By 10 days postsurgery, the beginnings of endothelialization and neointima formation were observed at the neck. However, the neck coverage was variable and incomplete at these early time points. Thrombus organization inside the aneurysm sac was rarely observed, and inflammatory cells were not present inside the aneurysm sac. Inflammatory cells were commonly observed in the aneurysm wall, and atherosclerotic change was present in each sample. Conclusions Complete aneurysm exclusion and apposition of healthy arterial wall occurred infrequently in our series. Endothelialization and neointima formation at the aneurysm neck take some time to complete and are often incomplete. The effectiveness of aneurysm clipping is related to the mechanics of aneurysm exclusion rather than the processes of endothelialization and neointima formation. The purpose of this study was to determine if balloon injury to the adjacent arterial wall during intracoronary stent deployment influences late in-stent neointimal formation. Stent design and deployment techniques are considered important factors in determining acute and long-term success with intracoronary stenting. Experimental and clinical studies support that the extent of neointimal formation and the probability for restenosis are influenced by the magnitude of arterial trauma induced with stenting. Nineteen 18-mm-long balloon-expandable stainless steel stents (MULTI-LINK Duet) were implanted at a 1:1 stent-to-artery ratio in the coronary arteries of swine with a conventional noncompliant balloon (n = 10) or a novel noncompliant balloon with short tapered shoulders to prevent edge dissection (n = 9). Quantitative coronary angiography and histology were used to evaluate balloon and artery interactions and the chronic vascular responses to the stents. Nineteen stents were implanted in the coronary arteries of seven swines at an inflation pressure of 14 atm using a standard noncompliant (n = 10) or a unique short transitional edge protection (n = 9) balloon. Histologic analysis at 28 days demonstrated balloon-associated barotrauma in 13 of 20 (65%) of adjacent nonstented arterial segments with the conventional balloon and only 3 of 18 (17%) of the adjacent nonstented arterial segments with the short transition edge protection balloon (P = 0.022). In-stent neointimal area and % stenosis correlated with the severity of peristent arterial injury (r = 0.43, P = 0.01). In-stent vessel injury scores were similar for stents with peristent injury (1.0 ± 0.3) versus stents without peristent injury (1.0 ± 0.03, P = 0.73). In-stent neointimal area and % stenosis were greater for stents with peristent injury (2.36 ± 0.74 mm 2 , 32% ± 9%) as compared to stents without peristent injury (1.39 ± 0.70 mm 2 , 20% ± 10%, P = 0.01). Arterial wall injury adjacent to a stent after high-pressure deployment contributes to late in-stent neointimal hyperplasia in this model. These experimental data suggest that further study is warranted to refine stent implantation techniques and that modifications of balloon shape or material may be useful to optimize stent deployment and reduce arterial trauma.

Background —Experimental studies have demonstrated that 32 P radioactive stents reduce neointimal formation at 28 days in porcine iliac and coronary arteries. Our objective was to determine the long-term dose-response effects of 1.0- to 12.0-μCi 32 P radioactive stents in a porcine atherosclerotic coronary model. Methods and Results —Control (n=19) and 1.0- to 12.0-μCi 32 P radioactive (n=43) stents (total, n=62) were implanted in the coronary arteries of 31 miniature swine at 28 days after creation of a fibrocellular plaque by overstretch balloon injury and cholesterol feeding. Angiography and histomorphometry were performed at 6 months. Stent thrombosis occurred in 3 radioactive (7.7%) and no control stents ( P =0.54). On histology, the mean neointimal area and the percent in-stent stenosis correlated positively with increasing stent activity ( r =0.64, P 2 ) for the stents with ≥3.0 μCi 32 P (3.57±1.21) was significantly greater than that for the nonradioactive stents (1.78±0.68, P 32 P was composed of smooth muscle cells, matrix proteoglycans, calcification, foam cells, and cholesterol clefts. Conclusions —Continuous low-dose-rate irradiation delivered by high-activity 32 P radioactive stents promotes the formation of an “atheromatous” neointima after 6 months in this experimental model. These data may be useful for predicting late tissue responses to radioactive stents in human coronary arteries.

Purpose The authors assess a new ePTFE-nitinol stent for its long-term patency, healing, and properties of endothelialization. Materials and Methods Adult greyhounds (n = 18) underwent bilateral iliofemoral placement of an endoprosthesis (Hemobahn) consisting of a nitinol stent lined with an ultrathin expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) material. Histologic and quantitative morphometric analyses were performed on devices explanted at 2 weeks and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. The source of endothelialization was examined in four additional devices modified by sealing either the proximal and distal ends or the entire graft with poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene) (FEP), a nonporous laminate to prevent potential transgraft endothelial cell migration. Results Device patency assessed with both intravascular ultrasound and histologic study showed minimal arterial stenosis, irrespective of implant duration. The neointima at less than 3 months consisted of fibrin and inflammatory infiltrate; at later time points, it was composed of mostly smooth muscle cells. Flow surfaces were more than 75% endothelialized by 3 months, which was nearly complete by 6 months. Modified endoprostheses entirely enveloped with FEP resulted in endothelialization of only the proximal and distal ends; the middle regions showed nonocclusive thrombi. Conversely, devices wrapped proximally and distally showed nearly complete endothelialization. Conclusions This ePTFE-nitinol endoprosthesis demonstrated long-term patency at up to 1 year after implantation and showed early and nearly complete endothelialization by 6 months. The design promoted rapid endothelialization of flow surfaces, particularly in the midregion of the device possibly by transgraft migration.

BACKGROUND Results of previous studies with stents coated with 'biocompatible' polymers showed that severe inflammatory reaction and subsequent in-stent restenosis may occur. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the contribution of granulomatous reaction from uncoated stents to formation of in-stent neointimal hyperplasia. METHODS Uncoated stainless-steel stents were implanted into 21 porcine coronary arteries without oversizing and harvested after 2 months (n = 6) or 6 months (n = 7). We compared the stents with granulomatous reaction with those without foreign-body reaction. RESULTS Granulomatous reactions occurred in five 21 stents and resulted in there being significantly greater in-stent neointimal hyperplasia than there was with stents without foreign-body reaction (angiographic diameter stenosis 45 +/- 36 versus 16 +/- 16%, area of neointimal 3.30 +/- 1.4 versus 1.22 +/- 0.4 mm2, thickness of neointima 0.46 +/- 0.29 versus 0.11 +/- 0.09 mm, stenosed area 56 +/- 24 versus 20 +/- 7%, P < 0.01 for each comparison). This increase in amount of neointima was accompanied by significantly greater proliferating cell nuclear antibody staining (15 +/- 5 versus 3 +/- 2%, P < 0.05) in the presence of a granuloma near the stent struts. CONCLUSIONS A localized granulomatous reaction is associated with a significant increase in amount of stent neointima and proliferation of cells. Thus, permanent stent implants may provoke granulomatous vascular reactions that may affect late-healing responses and clinical outcomes.

Purpose To compare an injectable hydrogel embolic device with a pushable AZUR device procedurally, angiographically, and histologically in the embolization of porcine arteries. Materials and Methods In 12 pigs, embolization of renal, gluteal, and hepatic or thoracic arteries was performed with either injectable hydrogel embolic devices (two arteries per pig) or an AZUR device (one artery per pig). Follow-up angiography was performed before sacrifice in five pigs at 7 days after embolization and seven pigs at 90 days after embolization. The harvested tissues were evaluated histologically. Continuous and ordinal results were compared using analysis of variance and χ 2 tests. Results For the sites with embolization performed with injectable hydrogel, complete angiographic occlusion was obtained in 21 of 24 (88%) sites after treatment, 10 of 10 (100%) sites at 7 days, and 10 of 14 (72%) sites at 90 days. For the sites with embolization performed with AZUR devices, complete angiographic occlusion was obtained in 10 of 12 (83%) sites after treatment, 4 of 5 (80%) sites at 7 days, and 5 of 7 (72%) sites at 90 days. Statistically significant differences in angiographic occlusion were not observed at 7 days ( P = .13) or 90 days ( P = .35). The embolization time of the injectable hydrogel group (14 minutes ± 8) was significantly reduced ( P = .02) compared with the AZUR group (22 minutes ± 12). Differences between the groups in arterial wall damage were not evident at either 7 days or 90 days, although greater damage was observed in both groups at 90 days. In both groups, inflammation was nonexistent to minimal at 7 days and minimal to mild at 90 days. Conclusions Embolization of porcine arteries was as effective with injectable hydrogel embolic devices as pushable AZUR devices, as evidenced by the procedural, angiographic, and histologic results.

"The Haida Nation is involved in an integrated marine planning initiative in northern British Columbia, Canada. The Haida continue to occupy traditional territory in and around Haida Gwaii, or the Queen Charlotte Islands, and are engaged in a larger planning process for the Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area (PNCIMA). This initiative is in the early planning stage, focused on capacity building and creating enabling conditions for co-governance. Court decisions, government policies, and a modern treaty process are driving short- and long-term efforts to resolve issues of Aboriginal ownership and resource access, both on land and in the ocean. As a result, the PNCIMA process is being led by two levels of government, First Nations and federal, reflecting changing perceptions of Aboriginal title and rights in British Columbia. The Haida have been resource owners and managers on Haida Gwaii for millennia, and continue to apply traditional knowledge and experience to marine-use planning and fisheries management. The Haida approach is place based and guided by fundamental Haida ethics and values such as respect, balance, and reciprocity. We describe these values and discuss the emerging role of First Nations in integrated oceans management in the context of the six themes: lessons from land-use planning; the PNCIMA governance structure; the relationship of values to planning outcomes; developing an ecosystem-based management framework; applications of traditional knowledge, based on a study of Haida marine traditional knowledge currently in progress; and linking marine planning at various scales. On Haida Gwaii, collaborative marine planning is expected to result in improved protection of Haida Gwaii waters for future generations, greater Haida participation in management decisions, and increasing emphasis on sustainability of both local fisheries and communities."

The Boeing Company, under a contract award from NASA Glenn Research Center, studied and compared the potential performance of three different power system types for use in a notional high altitude, long endurance, remotely operated aircraft utilizing stored hydrogen as a fuel. Technology development feasible for each power system was identified based on a 2010 demonstrator vehicle operation. Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), and internal combustion engine (ICE) power system configurations were included in the study. Three different SOFC manufacturers’, one PEMFC manufacturer, and a turbo-machinery supplier supported the power plant design and analysis, and system benefit analysis. Performance and weight parameters for the different power plants and the associated electrical and thermal management systems were analyzed in a vehicle endurance model. The SOFC-based power system showed the highest endurance results although it also has the lowest technology readiness level among the power plants considered.

Purpose. External beam mediastinal radiation-induced accelerated coronary atherosclerotic heart disease in humans has been recognized, especially when the condition occurs in young persons. The purpose of the present study was to compare external beam radiation-induced accelerated coronary atherosclerosis in humans with that seen in the pig coronary arteries following radioactive stent placement. Methods. A literature review of radiation-induced coronary artery disease was performed. In addition, clinical records and coronary histology from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology Registry were reviewed from patients who had received external beam radiation for mediastinal malignancies. Coronary arteries from pigs that had radioactive coronary stent placement were evaluated from our stent pathology laboratory and analyzed for comparison with the human disease. Results. In humans, the characteristics of the intimal plaque in accelerated atherosclerosis postradiation therapy were similar to that seen in typical atherosclerotic coronary disease in the absence of radiation therapy. However, medial thinning and adventitial fibrosis were the distinguishing pathologic arterial changes secondary to radiation seen in humans. Radioactive stent placement in pig coronary arteries produced similar changes to that observed in humans post-external beam radiation, consisting of medial injury and adventitial thickening accompanied by intimal foam cell collections, calcification, and necrotic core formation containing cholesterol clefts resulting in severe luminal narrowing. Conclusions. Radiation, delivered via external beam or radioactive stent, induces changes of intimal atherosclerosis with medial thinning and adventitial scarring in human and pig. Therefore, pending completion of long-term clinical studies, caution should be exercised before the widespread use of brachytherapy is advocated for the treatment and prevention of coronary restenosis.

BACKGROUND Animal and clinical studies have demonstrated late regression of in-stent neointima. This study was performed to identify the temporal changes in the in-stent neointimal constituents responsible for late regression. METHODS NIR stents were implanted in porcine coronary arteries (size of stent (in mm) to size of artery (in mm) approximately equal to 1.1) and harvested at 2 months and 6 months (n = 6 stents/group). Histopathologic analyses included morphometric analysis, smooth muscle cell density, and extracellular matrix contents. RESULTS Compared with the findings at 2 months, at 6 months there was a significant reduction in area stenosed (from 21 +/- 3% to 14 +/- 1%, P < 0.05) and neointimal thickness (from 0.2 +/- 0.03 mm to 0.03 +/- 0.02 mm, P < 0.05), despite similar injury scores (0.05 +/- 0.06 at 2 months and 0.36 +/- 0.29 at 6 months). This regression was accompanied mainly by a reduction in proteoglycan (from 24 +/- 19% to 5 +/- 8%, P = 0.05), with no change in smooth muscle cell density (71 +/- 7 compared with 76 +/- 23/high power field) or collagen content (25 +/- 19% compared with 25 +/- 19%). CONCLUSIONS The study confirmed the regression of in-stent neointima, which was mainly attributable to a reduction in proteoglycan content, resembling the natural healing response.
