This study examines digital story mapping as a pedagogical tool in the in the context of sustainability education with high school students and pre-service teachers. The study focuses on finding out how participants used geomedia as a source of geographic information and in presenting geographic information on story maps, comparing self- and teacher evaluations of story maps and describing experienced learning opportunities and limitations of story mapping. Research data consists of digital story maps, questionnaires and learning diaries which were analyzed with qualitative and quantitative content analysis supplemented by means of quantitative descriptive statistical figures. The findings revealed that the main criteria for choosing geomedia were reliability, easy access and use and teacher recommendations. High school students assessed their own story maps with higher grades compared to teacher evaluations, while pre-service teachers were more critical in assessing their own outputs. Participants experienced successes and difficulties in digital story mapping. These factors are referred to as educational opportunities, enablers of learning, barriers to learning and suggestions for improvements. Based on the results it can be concluded that story mapping has potential value for teaching and learning geography considering the limitations and needs for improvement in its implementation as identified in this study.

Fluent transitions to higher education are a common concern, especially in highly selective Finnish teacher education (TE). This study examined the fit between the matriculation examination (ME) results and the selection criteria applied in TE. We studied the accepted applicants in Finland in 2013-2015 (n = 5116), and both the accepted and rejected applicants at the University of Oulu in 2015 (n = 2170). Among the accepted applicants, the ME typically consisted of mother tongue, advanced syllabus English, basic syllabus mathematics, psychology, and health education. The various selection criteria did not directly differentiate the applicants with respect to the ME. The two strongest predictors in the ME for acceptance to TE were the choice of and performance in advanced syllabus mathematics and psychology. The results are discussed in light of selection criteria and TE.

The concentrations of atmospheric particulate matter and many of its constituents are temporally auto-correlated. However, this information has not been utilized in source apportionment methods. Here, we present a Bayesian matrix factorization model (BAMF) that considers the temporal auto-correlation of the components (sources) and provides a direct error estimation. The performance of BAMF is compared with positive matrix factorization (PMF) using synthetic Time-of-Flight Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor data, representing different urban environments from typical European towns to megacities. We find that BAMF resolves sources with overall higher factorization performance (temporal behavior and bias) than PMF on all datasets with temporally auto-correlated components. Highly correlated components continue to be challenging and ancillary information is still required to reach good factorizations. However, we demonstrate that adding even partial prior information about the chemical composition of the components to BAMF improves the factorization. Overall, BAMF-type models are promising tools for source apportionment and merit further research.

The fast rate of technological development in today's modern, digitalized society provides new opportunities and challenges for the future of geography education. The availability of geographic applications and geographical information systems (GIS) also create many interesting possibilities for the analysis, interpretation and production of geographic information (GI). The objective of this paper is to explore and discuss how a digital GIS portfolio can be used as an educational method for teaching and learning about the use of GIS. In this study, a design-based research (DBR) approach is used to develop a portfolio model for use in a Geomedia course in an upper secondary school setting. The design process occurred during January 2019 with pre-service teachers (n=8) and Geography teachers (n=2) at a university in Finland. There were six development cycles including problem analysis, design process and design solutions. The idea of a DBR approach is not only to create instructional materials to support students' in their learning and development of GIS skills, but also to be an educative process for pre-service teachers who have minimal experience in teaching GIS skills. The digital GIS portfolio model follows Bloom's taxonomy and includes progressively more demanding, inquiry-based activities for students. The digital GIS portfolio as a pedagogical practice was tested during Spring semester in 2019 with students (n=17) who were completing a Geomedia course at a local upper secondary school. It turned out that the use of a digital GIS portfolio is a very promising method for GIS education. Use of the portfolio improved student competence at using GIS; it developed student motivation to learn about GIS; and increased students' perceptions about the importance of GIS. However, a teacher-centered approach for teaching about GIS skills was also considered to be very important. The results of this study provide practical knowledge for Geography teachers and useful advice for developing teacher training in Geography.

BackgroundExcessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a cause of low quality of life among obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) patients. Current methods of assessing and predicting EDS are limited due to time constraints or differences in subjective experience and scoring. Electroencephalogram (EEG) power spectral densities (PSDs) have shown differences between OSA and non-OSA patients, and fatigued and non-fatigued patients. Therefore, polysomnographic EEG PSDs may be useful to assess the extent of EDS among patients with OSA.MethodsPatients presenting to Israel Loewenstein hospital reporting daytime sleepiness who recorded mild OSA on polysomnography and undertook a multiple sleep latency test. We present the SMEARcore data infrastructure framework: a collection of modular programs and processing workflows intended for measurement stations and campaigns as a real-time data analysis and management platform. SMEARcore enables new SMEAR (Station for Measuring Ecosystem–Atmosphere Relations) stations to be integrated in a way that is consistent with existing stations and transfers the existing data curation experience to the new station. It establishes robust data pipelines that allow easier diagnosis of problems. We show practical examples of how SMEARcore is utilized at operational measurement stations. This work differs from earlier similar concepts, such as those used at stations within ACTRIS (Aerosols, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure) and ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) networks, in three important aspects: firstly, by keeping all the processing under the control of the data owners; secondly, by providing tools for making data interoperable in general instead of harmonizing a particular set of instruments; and thirdly, by being extensible to new instruments. As such it is not meant as a replacement for these infrastructures but to be used in addition to them and to bring structured data curation to more measurement stations not yet using these practices.

Our pedagogic developing project, ImproStory, addresses improvisation and storytelling. We study how these two concepts could be applied in arts and crafts education for both primary and Kindergarten (daycare) teachers. The majority of our data consists of digital questionnaires in basic arts and crafts studies of primary pre-service teachers (N = 323). Additional data (portfolios) contain a group of Kindergarten and primary pre-service teachers with a focus in visual arts (N = 8). All data were collected at the University of Helsinki (Finland) during the academic year 2014-2015. According to our study, pre-service teachers consider improvisation and storytelling to be beneficial skills. They see developing them as necessary and useful. Experimenting and learning the approach appear to strengthen pre-service teachers' collaboration and allow them to build independence, trust, and self-confidence within arts and crafts education. In addition, improvisation and storytelling helps them to recognize their individual creative potential.

Global economic, social and environmental change drivers have tremendous effects on the dynamic and nested business environment calling for a sustainability transition to a circular bioeconomy. The transition will pressurise established industries to alter their value creation logic to consider sustainability holistically. The study follows a case study research strategy and investigates how an established Finnish pulp and paper industry reconfigures its communicated value creation logic. The findings of a qualitative document analysis suggest that the pulp and paper industry has started to explore new sustainable path-breaking innovations and create a common development agenda, which has resulted in incremental adaptations in the value creation logic. However, the industry’s narrative of already being sustainable has hampered the reconfiguration and stabilisation of the adapted value creation logic. From a theoretical perspective, adopting an interdisciplinary and systemic perspective is necessary to understand the changing business environment. From a managerial perspective, cross-sectoral collaboration and including perspectives of different actors can help in creating a holistically sustainable value creation logic.

Abstract Objective Mutations in the prion‐like domain of RNA binding proteins cause dysfunctional stress responses and associated aggregate pathology in patients with neurogenic and myopathic phenotypes. Recently, mutations in ANXA11 have been reported in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and multisystem proteinopathy. Here we studied families with an autosomal dominant muscle disease caused by ANXA11:c.118G > T;p.D40Y. Methods We performed deep phenotyping and exome sequencing of patients from four large Greek families, including seven affected individuals with progressive muscle disease but no family history of multi‐organ involvement or ALS. Results In our study, all patients presented with an autosomal dominant muscular dystrophy without any Paget disease of bone nor signs of frontotemporal dementia or Parkinson's disease. Histopathological analysis showed rimmed vacuoles with annexin A11 accumulations. Electron microscopy analysis showed myofibrillar abnormalities with disorganization of the sarcomeric structure and Z‐disc dissolution, and subsarcolemmal autophagic material with myeloid formations. Molecular genetic analysis revealed ANXA11:c.118G > T;p.D40Y segregating with the phenotype. Interpretation Although the pathogenic mechanisms associated with p.D40Y mutation in the prion‐like domain of Annexin A11 need to be further clarified, our study provides robust and clear genetic evidence to support the expansion of the phenotypic spectrum of ANXA11.

Background and Aims: The incidence of cerebrovascular disease (CVD) is rising among young adults (< 55 years). The risk for CVD starts to form in early childhood and is comprised of genetic and environmental risk factors. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between early family socioeconomic status (SES), inherited risk, and CVD until midlife. Methods: In the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 of 12,058 children, individuals were followed from gestational period up to 54 years. We used previously published early family SES clusters, based on latent class analysis of a wide set of prenatally collected variables. We investigated inherited risk with polygenic risk score (PRS) and parental CVDs during follow-up. The associations of the five distinct clusters, inherited risk, and consequent risk for various types of CVDs until middle age were analyzed with Cox regression. All analyses were conducted first in the whole sample and then stratified by sex as is recommended in cardiovascular studies. Results: During the follow-up of 586,943 person-years, 512 CVDs occurred. No clear association between SES clusters and CVD were found. Higher PRS associated with any CVD (hazard ratio (HR) per 1 SD increase: 1.15; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02–1.31), and ischemic CVD (HR: 1.21; 1.05–1.40). We found no combined associations of early family SES and inherited risk for CVD. Conclusions: Inherited risk was associated with the risk for CVD in mid-life in Finnish population. We found no clear connection with early family SES and CVD. Being born to a specific SES group did not increase the effect of inherited risk. Abstract Choline chloride (ChCl) / glycolic acid (GA) deep eutectic solvent (DES) media with high water content but without any additional catalyst are introduced in furfural and 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) production. The effects of water content, reaction time, and reaction temperature are investigated with two feedstocks: a glucose/xylose mixture and birch sawdust. Based on the results, 10 equivalent quantities of water (32.9 wt.%) were revealed to be beneficial for conversions without rupturing the DES structure. The optimal reaction conditions were 160 °C and 10 minutes for the sugar mixture and 170 °C and 10 minutes for birch sawdust in a microwave reactor. High furfural yields were achieved, namely 62 % from the sugar mixture and 37.5 % from birch sawdust. HMF yields were low, but since the characterization of the solid residue of sawdust, after DES treatment, was revealed to contain only cellulose (49 %) and lignin (52 %), the treatment could be potentially utilized in a biorefinery concept where the main products are obtained from the cellulose fraction. Extraction of products into the organic phase (methyl isobutyl ketone, MIBK) during the reaction enabled the recycling of the DES phase, and yields remained high for three runs of recycling.

Abstract Background The genetics of cerebellar ataxia is complex. Hundreds of causative genes have been identified, but only a few cause more than single cases. The spectrum of ataxia-causing genes differs considerably between populations. The aim of the study was to investigate the molecular epidemiology of ataxia in the Finnish population. Patients and methods All patients in hospital database were reviewed for the diagnosis of unspecified ataxia. Acquired ataxias and nongenetic ataxias such as those related to infection, trauma or stroke were excluded. Sixty patients with sporadic ataxia with unknown etiology and 36 patients with familial ataxia of unknown etiology were recruited in the study. Repeat expansions in the SCA genes (ATXN1, 2, 3, 7, 8/OS, CACNA1A, TBP), FXN, and RFC1 were determined. Point mutations in POLG, SPG7 and in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were investigated. In addition, DNA from 8 patients was exome sequenced. Results A genetic cause of ataxia was found in 33 patients (34.4%). Seven patients had a dominantly inherited repeat expansion in ATXN8/OS. Ten patients had mitochondrial ataxia resulting from mutations in nuclear mitochondrial genes POLG or RARS2, or from a point mutation m.8561C > G or a single deletion in mtDNA. Interestingly, five patients were biallelic for the recently identified pathogenic repeat expansion in RFC1. All the five patients presented with the phenotype of cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, and vestibular areflexia (CANVAS). Moreover, screening of 54 patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy revealed four additional patients with biallelic repeat expansion in RFC1, but none of them had cerebellar symptoms. Conclusions Expansion in ATXN8/OS results in the majority of dominant ataxias in Finland, while mutations in RFC1 and POLG are the most common cause of recessive ataxias. Our results suggest that analysis of RFC1 should be included in the routine diagnostics of idiopathic ataxia and Charcot-Marie-Tooth polyneuropathy.

Vocational education and training (VET) remain overlooked in learning analytics (LA) research. This systematic literature review, using four databases and other sources, was carried out by analyzing selected 60 articles (2012-2017) to study the levels and stages of education that the reviewed LA literature examined. The review indicated that most of the analyzed papers focused on the course level, followed by student and institution levels in higher education. Few empirical studies have addressed LA use during the VET stage, particularly at the governmental level. We also considered ethical concerns and recommendations for further LA development in VET. It is suggested to use LA in knowledge transfer and integration between the classroom and workplace.

Dew is a non-conventional source of water that has been gaining interest over the last two decades, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. In this study, we performed a long-term (1979–2018) energy balance model simulation to estimate dew formation potential in Iran aiming to identify dew formation zones and to investigate the impacts of long-term variation in meteorological parameters on dew formation. The annual average of dew occurrence in Iran was ∼102 d, with the lowest number of dewy days in summer (∼7 d) and the highest in winter (∼45 d). The average daily dew yield was in the range of 0.03–0.14 L m−2 and the maximum was in the range of 0.29–0.52 L m−2. Six dew formation zones were identified based on cluster analysis of the time series of the simulated dew yield. The distribution of dew formation zones in Iran was closely aligned with topography and sources of moisture. Therefore, the coastal zones in the north and south of Iran (i.e., Caspian Sea and Oman Sea), showed the highest dew formation potential, with 53 and 34 L m−2 yr−1, whereas the dry interior regions (i.e., central Iran and the Lut Desert), with the average of 12–18 L m−2 yr−1, had the lowest potential for dew formation. Dew yield estimation is very sensitive to the choice of the heat transfer coefficient. The uncertainty analysis of the heat transfer coefficient using eight different parameterizations revealed that the parameterization used in this study – the Richards (2004) formulation – gives estimates that are similar to the average of all methods and are neither much lower nor much higher than the majority of other parameterizations and the largest differences occur for the very low values of daily dew yield. Trend analysis results revealed a significant (p) negative trend in the yearly dew yield in most parts of Iran during the last 4 decades (1979–2018). Such a negative trend in dew formation is likely due to an increase in air temperature and a decrease in relative humidity and cloudiness over the 40 years.
