2. Impact of sleep deprivation on EEG markers of emotion regulation in young adults

Abstract

Sleep deprivation (SD) has negative effects on emotional regulation, but few studies have evaluated electroencephalo-graphic (EEG) indices and none of these have used a within-subject design. Twenty-nine participants (17 female) com-pleted a repeated-measures study protocol involving a night of normal sleep (NS) and a night of SD, followed by resting-state EEG during the following morning. Established EEG indices of emotion regulation, frontal alpha asymmetry (FAS)and slow wave/fast wave (SW/FW) ratio in frontal sites (F3, F4, Fz), were investigated. Our results did not reveal SD ef-fects in FAS (t28= -.960, p = .345) or in SW/FW ratio (t28= 0.737, p = 0.467). Although other studies have demonstratedemotional dysregulation after SD, two well-studied EEG markers of emotional dysregulation did not reflect altered emo-tional states after SD in the current within-subject study. Future studies combining EEG and other indices of emotionalregulation may help elucidate these results.

3. The Impact of Sleep Restriction on Daytime Functioning in School-Age Children with and without ADHD: A Narrative Review of the Literature

Abstract

The purpose of this narrative review was to synthesize the existing literature on the impact of sleep on daytime functioning in both typically developing (TD) children and children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Correlational studies in children suggest that insufficient sleep and impaired daytime functioning are significantly associated; however, this does not address the causal relationships between sleep and daytime functioning. The review results indicated that there is limited experimental sleep manipulation research in children. In the eight studies that employed experimental methods to examine sleep restriction, the consequences of insufficient sleep were greatest for attention and inconsistent for other domains, such as cognition and emotion regulation. Despite the significant co-occurrence of ADHD and sleep problems, the experimental sleep research focused on the daytime impact of shorter sleep in children with ADHD is extremely limited and as such more research is needed.

Abstract

We assessed the effect of a daytime sleep opportunity on planning and risk-related decision-making in emerging adults using multiple neurobehavioral assessments. A total of 136 healthy emerging adults (20.0 ± 1.5 years), 65% female, performed the Risky-Gains Task and the Tower of London test twice. Between these assessments, they were randomized to either have a sleep opportunity monitored by polysomnography (Sleep group, n = 101) or to stay awake (Wake group, n = 35). During Test 2, in comparison to the Sleep group, the Wake group showed increased sleepiness, worse planning ability and more decrease in reaction times when selecting risky choices. Changes in Tower of London test steps used and Risky-Gains Task response time correlated with the number of central and frontal fast sleep spindles, respectively. These results indicate that among emerging adults who commonly have poor sleep patterns, a daytime sleep opportunity was related to better planning ability, better psychomotor vigilance and stable response speeds in risk-related decision-making. Changes in planning and risk-related decision-making correlated with the number of sleep spindles during the nap, supporting a specific role for sleep in modulating planning and potentially other higher-order cognitive functions.

30. Effects of overnight sleep restriction on brain chemistry and mood in women with unipolar depression and healthy controls

Abstract

Background: Partial or total overnight sleep deprivation produces immediate mood improvement in about 50% of patients with depression, but not in healthy controls. Our objectives were to compare the neurochemical changes that accompanied partial overnight sleep deprivation in healthy and depressed participants, and to compare baseline neurochemical profiles and overnight neurochemical changes between those depressed participants who did and did not respond to sleep loss with mood improvement. Methods: We studied 2 brain regions (left dorsal prefrontal area and pons) in 12 women with unipolar depression and in 15 healthy women using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy acquired at 1.5 T. The scans took place at baseline and 24 hours later after a night with sleep restricted to a maximum of 2.5 hours (22:30-01:00). We assessed 3 neurochemical signals (referenced to internal water): N-acetylaspartate (NAA), choline compounds (Cho) and creatine-plus-phosphocreatine (tCr). Results: In both groups combined, sleep restriction caused a 20.1% decrease in pontine tCr ([F.sub.1-16] = 5.07, p= 0.039, Cohen's d= 0.54) and an 11.3% increase in prefrontal Cho ([F.sub.1-21] = 5.24, p= 0.033, Cohen's d= 0.46). Follow-up tests revealed that prefrontal Cho increases were significant only among depressed participants (17.9% increase, [t.sub.9] = -3.35, p = 0.008, Cohen's d = 1.06). Five depressed patients showed at least 30% improvement in mood, whereas 6 showed no change or worsening in mood after sleep restriction. Baseline pontine Cho levels distinguished subsequent responders from nonresponders to sleep restriction among depressed participants (z = 2.61, p= 0.008). Limitations: A limitation of this study is the relatively small sample size. Conclusion: Sleep restriction altered levels of pontine tCr and prefrontal Cho in both groups combined, suggesting effects on phospholipid and creatine metabolism. Abstract

Correlational studies show that short sleep is associated with negative daytime outcomes in school-aged children, but there are few experimental sleep manipulation studies to assess whether this is a causal relation. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of mild, cumulative sleep restriction on daytime functioning of typically developing (TD) children and children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A total of 36 school-aged children (n = 18 TD; n = 18 ADHD), aged 6–11 years participated. Children participated in two sleep conditions (order counter-balanced). The Restricted condition required a 1 h reduction of time in bed for one week, and the Controlled Typical condition was based on participant's average baseline sleep. At the end of each condition, participants attended the sleep lab for overnight polysomnography and daytime functioning assessments. Children successfully reduced time in bed by ~1 h. Due to compensatory changes, total sleep time (TST) was reduced by only ~20 min, as children fell asleep faster and spent less time awake after sleep onset during the Restricted compared to Controlled Typical condition. Many daytime functions were not affected by this very mild sleep restriction, however, both groups showed significant changes in performance on an objective attention task and on a parent-rated emotional lability measure after six nights of minimal reductions in TST. There were no significant differences between groups. Abstract

Delayed matching-to-sample experiments were used to test aspects of pigeons' memory for duration involving length of delay and intertrial intervals. As predicted by the relative duration hypothesis, a shorter intertrial interval was associated with more systematic errors in response to manipulations of delay intervals. Varying the intertrial and delay intervals during training did not significantly affect the acquisition of a temporal reference memory.
