The stability of ice shelves and drainage of ice sheets they buttress is largely determined by melting at their atmospheric and oceanic interfaces. Subglacial bathymetry can impact ice shelf stability because it influences the onset and the pattern of warm ocean water incursions into the cavities between them and the seafloor. Bathymetry is further important at pinning points, which significantly retard the flow of ice shelves. This effect can be lost instantaneously if basal and surface melting cause an ice sheet to thin and lift off its pinning points. With all this in mind, we have developed a model of bathymetry beneath the western Roi Baudouin and central and eastern Borchgrevink ice shelves in Dronning Maud Land based on inversion from gravity data and tied to available depth references offshore and subglacial topography inland of the grounding line. The model shows deep glacial troughs beneath the ice shelves and bathymetric sills close to the continental shelf. The central Borchgrevink Ice Shelf overhangs the continental slope by around 50km, exposing its northern parts to the open ocean and higher ocean temperatures. Continuous troughs traverse the central Borchgrevink and western Roi Baudouin ice shelves at depths greater than the offshore thermocline and thus present a risk of Warm Deep Water intrusions into their cavities under the current and future oceanographic regimes. Differing bathymetric characteristics might explain the ice shelves' contrasting dominant mass loss processes.

Antarctica's ice shelves play a key role in stabilizing the ice streams that feed them. Since basal melting largely depends on ice‐ocean interactions, it is vital to attain consistent bathymetry models to estimate water and heat exchange beneath ice shelves. We have constructed bathymetry models beneath the ice shelves of western Dronning Maud Land by inverting airborne gravity data, and incorporating seismic, multibeam and radar depth references. Our models reveal deep glacial troughs beneath the ice shelves and terminal moraines close to the continental shelf breaks, which currently limit the entry of Warm Deep Water from the Southern Ocean. The ice shelves buttress a catchment that comprises an ice volume equivalent to nearly 1 meter of eustatic sea level rise, partly susceptible to ocean forcing. Changes in water temperature and thermocline depth may accelerate marine based ice sheet drainage and constitute an underestimated contribution to future global sea level rise.

Antarctica’s ice shelves play a key role in stabilizing their related ice sheets. The ice shelves of western Dronning Maud Land – including the Ekström, Atka, Jelbart, Fimbul and Vigrid ice shelves – currently buttress a catchment that comprises an ice volume equivalent to 0.95 meters of sea level. Any future increase in ice shelf mass loss, with basal melting likely being the main cause, will inevitably accelerate ice sheet drainage and contribute to global sea level rise. Since basal melting largely depends on ice-ocean interactions, it is crucial to attain reliable and consistent bathymetry models to estimate water and heat exchange beneath these ice shelves. We have constructed bathymetry models for an area of about 63,000 km2 beneath the ice shelves of western Dronning Maud Land by inverting airborne gravity data, tied to radar, seismic, and offshore depth reference points. New high-resolution airborne magnetic data across the ice shelves point to Jurassic intrusions and seaward-dipping reflectors originating from Gondwana breakup; enabling us to consider geological density variations as part of the bathymetry modelling process. Our bathymetric models reveal deep glacial troughs beneath the ice shelves, and sills close to the continental shelf breaks which currently limit the possible entry of Warm Deep Water from the Southern Ocean. The present-day average thermocline depth is comparable to the average depths of saddles along the sills, which present gateways into the sub-ice cavities. This leads us to suggest a high sensitivity for these ice shelves to changes in ocean temperature and especially thermocline depth in the future. Once a significant amount of warm water overtops the sills, the deep troughs will allow for fast access to the grounding line, after which it seems there may be little to stop basal melting from rapidly eroding the ice shelves of western Dronning Maud Land.

Here we present a novel, high-resolution and physically based description of Antarctic bed topography using mass conservation. Our results reveal previously unknown basal features with major implications for glacier response to climate change. For example, glaciers flowing across the Transantarctic Mountains are protected by broad, stabilizing ridges. Conversely, in the marine basin of Wilkes Land, East Antarctica, we find retrograde slopes along Ninnis and Denman glaciers, with stabilizing slopes beneath Moscow University, Totten and Lambert glacier system, despite corrections in bed elevation of up to 1 km for the latter. This transformative description of bed topography redefines the high- and lower-risk sectors for rapid sea level rise from Antarctica; it will also significantly impact model projections of sea level rise from Antarctica in the coming centuries.

Modelling-, rock cooling-, sedimentation- and exposure-based interpretations of the mechanisms by which topography evolves at extended continental margins vary widely. Observations from the margin of Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, have until now not strongly contributed to these interpretations. Here, we present new airborne gravity and radar data describing the eastern part of this margin. Inland of a tall (2.5 km) great escarpment, a plateau topped by a branching network of valleys suggests preservation of a fluvial landscape with SW-directed drainage beneath a cold-based ice sheet. The valley floor slopes show that this landscape was modified during a period of alpine-style glaciation prior to the onset of the current cold-based phase around 34 Ma. The volume of sediments in basins offshore in the Riiser-Larsen Sea balances with the volume of rock estimated to have been eroded and transported by north-directed drainage from between the escarpment and the continental shelf break. The stratigraphy of these basins shows that most of the erosion occurred during the ~40 Myr following late Jurassic continental breakup. This erosion is unlikely to have been dominated by backwearing because the required rate of escarpment retreat to its present location is faster than numerical models of landscape evolution suggest to be possible. We suggest an additional component of erosion by downwearing seawards of a pre-existing inland drainage divide. The eastern termination of the great escarpment and inland plateau is at the West Ragnhild trough, a 300 km long, 15–20 km wide and up to 1.6 km deep subglacial valley hosting the West Ragnhild glacier. Numerous overdeepened (by >300 m) segments of the valley floor testify to its experience of significant glacial erosion. Within Antarctica, eastern Dronning Maud Land (DML) represents a key region for improving our understanding of crustal fragments that were involved in the amalgamation and breakup histories of Rodinia and Gondwana. An aerogeophysical survey was flown during the austral summers 2013/14 and 2014/15 to explore the largely ice- covered region south and east of Sør Rondane. Here, we present 40,000 new line kilometer of aeromagnetic data gathered across an area of ca. 295,000 km2 with a 10 km line spacing. Magnetic domains, major lineaments, lo- cations, and depths of magnetic source bodies are detected from total field data, their tilt derivative, pseudo- gravity, and analytical signal transformations, and from Euler Deconvolution maps. These data are integrated with exposure information from the Sør Rondane, Belgica and the Yamato mountains in order to identify the eastern spatial extent of a major juvenile Early Neoproterozoic crustal province, the Tonian Oceanic Arc Super Terrane (TOAST). Magnetic data reveal a characteristic pattern with NW-SE trending elongated magnetic anom- alies to the south of Sør Rondane. This area is interpreted as the eastward continuation of the distinct SE DML Province and therefore of the TOAST. Major curvilinear magnetic anomalies of several hundreds of kilometers length dissect the region south and southwest of Sør Rondane. These may represent boundaries of individual oce- anic arc terrane or alternatively major Pan-African shear zones. A significant change of the magnetic anomaly pat- tern ca. 800 km inland of Sør Rondane may indicate the southern minimum extent of the TOAST. Magnetic anomalies of varying size, amplitude, and orientation suggest a complex transitional area between the Belgica and Yamato Mts., which appears to separate the TOAST from an Indo-Antarctic craton to the east. The new data suggest that the TOAST is comparable in size with the Antarctic Peninsula and therefore represents a signif- icant piece of Neoproterozoic

The Dronning Maud Land Mountains in East Antarctica form a key area for the better understanding of the geodynamic evolution of East Antarctica. Specifically, the integration of geophysics with geology and geochronology reveals the complex tectonic history of East Antarctica and its significance for Rodinia and Gondwana reconstructions. The international GEA-expeditions (2010-12) revealed three major tectonic provinces: a westernmost part with Kalahari (Africa) affinities and an easternmost part from about 35E with Indo-Antarctic affinities sandwiched in between these two blocks, is an extensive region with juvenile Neoproterozoic crust (ca. 990-900 Ma), the Tonian Oceanic Arc Super Terrane (TOAST) that shows very limited signs of a pre-Neoproterozoic history. We have tested the spatial extent of the TOAST by a regional moraine study that confirm the lack of older material inland, though latest Mesoproterozoic juvenile rocks frequently do occur in the glacial drift and probably record a slightly earlier precursor of the TOAST inland. The TOAST records 150 Ma of almost continuous tectono-metamorphic reworking at medium- to high-grade metamorphic conditions between ca. 650 to 500 Ma. This long-lasting overprinting history is thought to record protracted accretion of ocean island arc terranes and the final amalgamation of East Antarctica along the major East African-Antarctic Orogen. There is no sign of significant metamorphic overprint immediately after the formation of TOAST. Therefore, these island arcs may have formed independent of, or peripheral to Rodinia, and may reveal major accretionary tectonics outboard of Rodinia.

Sør Rondane and adjacent regions in eastern Dronning Maud Land (DML) are of major interest regarding our understanding of the architecture of crustal fragments that were involved in the amalgamation and breakup history of Rodinia and Gondwana. Within a long-standing collaboration between Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) the combination of surface geology from sparse exposures with aeromagnetic data provide a powerful tool to characterize the sub-ice geology and therefore the cryptic interior of East Antarctica. During the austral summers 2014 and 2015, ca. 40.000 line kilometre of new magnetic, gravity and ice-penetrating radar data were collected with 10 km line spacing. Here, we report on magnetic anomaly data to the east and south of Sør Rondane. These data are integrated with exposure information from Sør Rondane, the Belgica Mountains, and the Yamato Mountains. Main emphasis was placed on estimating the spatial extent of the recently discovered Tonian Oceanic Arc Super Terrane (TOAST), which is interpreted as Neoproterozoic juvenile crustal additions within the East African-Antarctic Orogen. Earlier studies revealed a major magnetic anomaly, the Forster Magnetic Anomaly (FMA), and a province of subdued SE-striking parallel positive magnetic anomalies in the mostly ice-covered region of central DML and south-eastern DML, respectively. The FMA is interpreted as western extent of the TOAST, whereas geological investigations showed that the subdued magnetic anomaly pattern can be correlated with exposures in Sør Rondane and scattered nunataks west of it. U-Pb ages of ca. 1000-900 Ma, are documented from zircons of gabbro–trondhjemite–tonalite–granodiorite (GTTG) suites in both areas. East Antarctica formed by amalgamation of a number of cratons along distinct Ediacaran mobile belts. They include the ca. 600-500 Ma old East African-Antarctic Orogen (EAAO) and the Kuunga Orogen, which seem to converge in the region of Dronning Maud Land. In central Dronning Maud Land, the major Forster Magnetic Anomaly separates rocks with Grenville-age protolith ages (ca. 1130-1000 Ma) to the West from rocks with Early Neoproterozic protolith ages (ca. 1000-930 Ma) to the East. The Forster Magnetic Anomaly is therefore interpreted as a suture between these two provinces. New field work during three recent international expeditions, Geodynamic Evolution of East Antarctica (GEA) I to III, and first geoscientific results reveal a complex tectonic architecture between central Dronning Maud Land and Sør Rondane in eastern Dronning Maud Land. East of the Forster Magnetic Anomaly, the magnetic anomaly pattern changes significantly and typical Maud-type crust is apparently lacking. Particularly, the GEA II campaign targeted a range of previously unvisited nunataks between Sør Rondane and central Dronning Maud Land (from Blåklettane and Bergekongen in the East to Urna and Sørsteinen in the West). These nunataks are dominated by medium- to high-grade metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of possibly Neoproterozoic age, including abundant marble and graphite schists. Sør Rondane in eastern Dronning Maud Land, on the other hand, is dominated by two distinct blocks separated by the dextral Main Shear Zone. The northwestern block appears as part of the EAAO or the Kuunga Orogen, where new SHRIMP zircon data from metamorphic rims provide ages of ca. 560 Ma. The southeastern block is made up of a TTG terrane, which provides 12 new zircon crystallization ages ranging from 1000-930 Ma.
