6. Designing Digital Workplaces: A Four-Phase Iterative Approach with Guidelines Concerning Virtuality and Enterprise Integration.

Abstract

Background: The current workforce comprises individuals with varied characteristics and work expectations. Consequently, many companies are currently investing resources to design effective work environments with the aim of enhancing their ability to retain top talent. Method: We conducted a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to investigate how organizations can design effective digital workplaces for their workforce. Results: Our primary contributions encompass a definition of a digital workplace rooted in literature, and a four-phase iterative approach for crafting a digital workplace. This includes a comprehensive set of actionable guidelines for each phase, which were previously dispersed within existing literature. Additionally, we introduce a rubric for assessing Enterprise Integration, employed in conjunction with Virtuality Level to characterize various workplace configurations. Finally, we have also listed a set of additional research gaps and promising avenues for researchers interested in this field. Conclusion: In response to new challenges, companies must reassess their current workplace arrangements, specifically in light of a workforce that increasingly prioritizes flexible work options. This endeavor is most effectively achieved by taking into consideration a set of actionable guidelines that account for various typologies of digital workplaces. These guidelines should be considered when designing work arrangements that seamlessly integrate processes, individuals, and technology. Based on two systematic literature reviews, we contribute to the understanding of multi-generational digital workspaces by consolidating a list of known barriers and enablers in digital workplaces and identifying best practices to mitigate the former and promote the latter. Further, we analyze how these factors are perceived by the different generations X, Y, and Z, which increasingly work together. Abstract

Maturity models are essential tools to evaluate Industry 4.0 readiness. However, they have limitations in supporting organizational strategies over time and are insufficient to create company-specific Industry 4.0 roadmaps. This paper presents a research project to steer Industry 4.0 transformation in a leading paper pulp company listed on the Euronext Lisbon stock exchange. The contribution to the body of knowledge is a novel approach for Industry 4.0 adoption that extends the Balanced Scorecard with a fifth perspective and exposes the value of maturity model fragments: fractions of maturity models pertinent to a custom strategy. The proposed solution can support continuous improvement in long-term digital transformation strategies. Moreover, the lifecycle of maturity model fragments, namely, (1) dimensions and criteria elicitation, (2) personalization, and (3) strategic alignment, opens innovative prospects for maturity model design, tailorability, and practical relevance. Abstract

Blockchain technology is a very promising disruptive technology with the potential to address problems that afflict our society, making it more inclusive, fair, and resilient. However, on the other hand, there are some notorious cases of using blockchain-based cryptocurrencies for money laundering, human trafficking, and financing criminal activities. The current paper commences a research effort aiming to better understand how blockchains can be used for good. The goal is to develop a conceptual framework based on a literature review covering the Blockchain for Good (B4G) domain. The main steps of the research process are presented and discussed in the paper. The proposed framework will illustrate the complex and multifaceted role of blockchain in improving social welfare, and it will be useful in guiding research efforts, formulating actionable advice, and promoting the B4G domain. 23. A Multi-year Study of Resilient Digital Transformation in Viticulture.

Abstract

Resilient agriculture is a requirement for sustainable development in an era of drastic changes in climate, demography, and the adoption of digital technologies. In Viticulture 5.0, digital transformation has the potential to address the multiple vulnerabilities affecting the sector, but more longitudinal studies and detailed analyses of the business ecosystem are needed. This paper presents the results of an action research project in a Top 100 world wine producer working with academic partners and technology providers to revolutionize their vineyards. Strong structuration theory is selected to evaluate (1) system design, (2) data-driven resilient viticulture, and (3) the sociotechnical networks of position practices generated by a Viticulture 5.0 strategy. This work contributes to the research strand of information systems resilience, expanding our knowledge about the duality of structure in viticulture transformations that involve increasingly complex (human and technological) actors' interdependencies in their business ecosystem. Abstract

This paper argues in favor of a deeper understanding of the importance of futures in information systems (IS) research and proposes an initial set of guidelines for the inclusion, in IS publications, of an optional section devoted to the discussion of futures. The proposal was inspired by reflections on the nature of disruptive innovations and was grounded on a cross disciplinary literature review in the areas of IS, management, and computer science. The proposal includes examples of preferable futures and a discussion of their exploration. The anticipation of sustainable futures has the potential to (1) enrich the debate in IS research, (2) contribute to the development of preferable futures, and (3) create knowledge bases of scenarios and trajectories for such development. As far as theory is concerned, the paper advances the incorporation of futures in IS research. For the practice of the discipline, the paper proposes an additional dimension for the publication of impactful research that takes into account the needs of today's managers, namely those who deal with uncertain environments. Abstract

We propose a lifecycle model for sociomaterial transformation in the emergent fourth industrial revolution (industry 4.0). Canonical action research is our mode of inquiry, conducted in a traditional ceramic company over a period of eighteen months. The findings suggest that the claimed revolution requires the introduction of combined changes in the social and the material, creating new product lifecycles that emerge from the fusion and co-evolution of different materialities. For practice, our study provides concrete examples and accessible guidelines for industry 4.0 roadmaps in traditional industries. For theory, we (1) explain the sociomaterial nature of industry 4.0 transformation, (2) suggest that sociomateriality is an appropriate theory for design and action, and (3) stress the potential of sociomateriality to strengthen the use of action research in information systems. 27. Do You Walk the Talk in Quality Culture?

Abstract

We present an action research project to foster quality culture in business processes. The client setting is in the food industry, a vital sector for our society and one of the most regulated in the world. Food production involves auditing throughout the supply chain and a demanding information system (IS), with numerous requirements grounded on the organizational policies. Our ISO2 approach – for joint development of IS and quality management system (QMS) – was tailored with a set of routines and artifacts to promote quality culture in the maintenance process of the selected organization. This contribution enables a graphical visualization of existing gaps between the high-level principles endorsed by an organization and its confirmation: (1) instantiating company policies at process level; (2) contrasting the assessment of the process owner and of the quality auditor; and (3) comparing the desired and the real practices in a specific business process. An audit from a food retail group confirmed the positive outcome of ISO2 approach in what regards the internalization of quality principles while developing the IS. Moreover, we performed a longitudinal evaluation to verify enduring effects of the ISO2 approach in business processes. We gathered evidence that ISO2 can (1) improve process users’ awareness of quality culture; (2) suggest an approach to increase trust in company policies; and (3) contribute to business process improvements.
