Abstract Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising frontier in the realm of environmental remediation, offering unprecedented precision and efficacy in addressing soil contamination and land degradation. This review paper has performed comprehensive survey of nanotechnological approaches for soil remediation and land restoration, encompassing a diverse array of nanomaterial (NM)-based strategies tailored to mitigate the impacts of various contaminants on terrestrial ecosystems. Furthermore, this review critically examines the ecological implications, regulatory considerations, and ethical dimensions associated with the deployment of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) in environmental remediation efforts. By providing a holistic understanding of the opportunities and challenges inherent in the integration of nanotechnology with soil remediation practices, this review aims to inform policymakers, researchers, and practitioners alike, fostering informed decision-making and catalyzing sustainable approaches towards land stewardship and environmental conservation.

This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the certificateless aggregate signature scheme in terms of their computational performance and security. This signature scheme is of significant interest because of its relevance in various domains such as Internet of Things (IoT), Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), E-Healthcare Medical Systems, and Mobile Healthcare Systems. Further, we point towards potential future directions for research and development in this field and conclude our study. This survey serves as a valuable resource for expanding the horizons of this scheme by envisioning new applications.

Abstract This paper presents a non-linear finite element model (FEM) to predict the load-carrying capacity of three different configurations of elliptical concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) short columns: double steel tubes with sandwich concrete (CFDST), double steel tubes with sandwich concrete and concrete inside the inner steel tube, and a single outer steel tube with sandwich concrete. Then, a parametric and analytical study was performed to explore the influence of geometric and material parameters on the load-carrying capacity of elliptical CFST short columns. Furthermore, the current study investigates the effectiveness of machine learning (ML) techniques in predicting the load-carrying capacity of elliptical CFST short columns. These techniques include Support Vector Regressor (SVR), Random Forest Regressor (RFR), Gradient Boosting Regressor (GBR), XGBoost Regressor (XGBR), MLP Regressor (MLPR), K-nearest Neighbours Regressor (KNNR), and Naive Bayes Regressor (NBR). ML models accuracy is assessed by comparing their predictions with FE results. Among the models, GBR and XGBR exhibited outstanding results with high test R2 scores of 0.9888 and 0.9885, respectively. The study provided insights into the contributions of individual features to predictions using the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) approach. The results from SHAP indicate that the eccentric loading ratio (e/2a) has the most significant effect on the load-carrying capacity of elliptical CFST short columns, followed by the yield strength of the outer steel tube ( $$\:{f}_{yo}$$ ) and the inner width of the inner steel tube ( $$\:2{a}_{ii}$$ ). Additionally, a user interface platform has been developed to streamline the practical application of the proposed ML.

Abstract Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers are a significant global health concern with diverse etiologies and limited treatment options. Ellagic acid (EA), a natural polyphenolic compound, exhibits promising anticancer properties against various GI malignancies. In this article, we have reviewed recent research on the anticancer potential of EA across esophageal, gastric, colorectal, pancreatic, and liver cancers. In esophageal cancer, EA inhibits the formation of O6-methylguanine (O6-meGua) adducts induced by carcinogens like N-nitrosomethylbenzylamine (NMBA), thereby suppressing tumor growth. Additionally, EA inhibits STAT3 signaling and stabilizes tumor suppressor proteins, showing potential as an anti-esophageal cancer agent. In gastric cancer, EA regulates multiple pathways involved in cell proliferation, invasion, and apoptosis, including the p53 and PI3K-Akt signaling pathways. It also demonstrates anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, making it a promising therapeutic candidate against gastric cancer. In colorectal cancer (CRC), EA inhibits cell proliferation, induces apoptosis, and modulates the Wnt/β-catenin and PI3K/Akt pathways, suggesting its efficacy in preventing CRC progression. Furthermore, EA has shown promise in pancreatic cancer by inhibiting nuclear factor-kappa B, inducing apoptosis, and suppressing epithelial–mesenchymal transition. In liver cancer, EA exhibits radio-sensitizing effects, inhibits inflammatory pathways, and modulates the tumor microenvironment, offering potential therapeutic benefits against hepatocellular carcinoma. Studies on EA potential in combination therapies and the development of targeted delivery systems are required for enhanced efficacy against gastrointestinal cancers.

Tenosynovial giant cell tumor (GCT) is a rare, benign disorder involving the joint’s synovial lining, tendon sheath or bursa. It can be classified as localized or diffuse based on its pattern and behavior. Localized form is extremely rare in knee joint. We present an unusual case of localized form of GCT in Hoffa’s fat pad in a young female, treated with arthroscopic resection and monitored for over a year with no recurrence. Despite its rarity, GCT of Hoffa’s fat pad should be considered in cases of non-traumatic knee pain.

IntroductionCardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an evidence-based intervention that saves lives. In low- and middle-income countries like Nepal, the occurrence of the problem and its outcome are seldom studied. The study aims to highlight the prevalence, performance, and outcome of CPR in government hospitals of Nepal.MethodsA mixed method study was done for two months in central and provincial government hospitals of Nepal. A total of 80 resuscitations were evaluated using a questionnaire based on the American Heart Association 2020 guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. An in-depth interview was conducted with 15 active participants of the resuscitation in different sites. Thematic analysis was done using the framework of the chain of survival of arrest victims.ResultsThe overall prevalence of CPR was found to be 1.92% [95% CI: 0.01,0.02] with 5.4% in central hospitals and 0.65% in provincial hospitals with 60% cardiac arrests occurring in the intensive care unit. Estimated time from recognition of the arrest to initiating CPR was 1.9 ±1.4 minutes. Asystole 66.25% was the commonest arrest rhythm and 21.25% had difficulty interpreting rhythm. Only 11.25% of the victims had return of spontaneous circulation and were subsequently transferred for post-arrest care. The qualitative analysis highlighted the lack of trained staff, a dedicated system, feedback mechanism, and provision of post-arrest care.ConclusionAcross various level of Nepal's healthcare system, cardiopulmonary resuscitation is prevalent with poor performance and outcome. To improve outcomes, it is essential to implement standardized procedures and ensure high quality resuscitation delivery before and after the event supported by well-trained healthcare personnel and adequate infrastructure.

Nanotechnology is an innovative method of elevating agricultural output without sacrificing quality due to nanoparticles (NPs) unique characteristics and numerous potential uses. It is also nature-friendly, advantageous to living organisms, and cost-effective. Sustainable agricultural practices are gaining attention on NPs and nanofertilizers (NFs) as practical substitutes for traditional fertilizers and pesticides that nanotechnology could surpass some of the issues with traditional farming methods. There should be an emphasis on cutting-edge studies of NPs applications in agriculture. This article presents a positive perspective on the mechanisms leading to the formation of NPs and their application as NFs for managing nutrients in agriculture. We also share up-to-date findings on NPs interactions with plants, the fate of NPs and potential risks associated with them in plants. The as well as on the role of NPs nanomaterials in decreasing abiotic and heavy metal toxicity stress. NFs help reduce the environmental damage caused by traditional, inorganic fertilizers. Due to their enhanced responsiveness and ability to pierce the epidermis, NFs can decrease nutrient surplus while increasing nutrient usage efficiency. It was also established that NPs are essential for protecting against abiotic stress. However, some studies have shown that NPs are harmful to higher plants because the NPs they are deposited upon the surface of cells or in the cell organelles, leading to oxidative stress symptoms. In this review article, we explore the utilization of NPs for nutrient and abiotic stress management for crop production and protection during the climate change era.

Abstract Nanocomposite hydrogels (NHs) have emerged as a groundbreaking tool in biomedical applications, offering remarkable versatility and efficacy. Integrating a wide range of nanoparticles, including carbon-based, polymeric, ceramic, and metallic nanomaterials, within hydrogel networks results in nanocomposites with superior properties and tailored functionalities. Recent research has highlighted their potential to address key challenges in drug delivery, cancer therapy, tissue regeneration, biosensing, and wound healing, outstanding to their biocompatibility and bioavailability. Nanohydrogels demonstrate significant promise in drug delivery systems and biological sensors, providing sustained therapeutic activity at targeted sites. This reduces the frequency of drug administration and minimizes the harmful side effects. In the healthcare sector, they have applications ranging from cancer therapy to aesthetic corrections and are a leading topic in tissue regeneration research. This comprehensive review of Biomedical Applications investigates the latest advancements in NHs, focusing on their classification, unique properties, and diverse applications. By identifying the future research prospects and existing gaps, this review aims to highlight the therapeutic and diagnostic potential of nanocomposite hydrogel technology, covering the way for further advancement in the field. Interrupted aortic arch (IAA) is a congenital anomaly characterized by a discontinuity between the ascending and descending aorta. We present a 27-year-old male patient who had presented with Stanford Type A aortic dissection and was subsequently found to have IAA on computed tomography aortogram. The patient subsequently underwent emergency surgery for the repair of aortic dissection. Although few studies with IAA and coexistent Stanford type-B aortic dissection have been described, there is no reported case in literature on IAA with Stanford Type A aortic dissection.

This study presents a numerical modeling approach that utilizes millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave (FMCW) radar to reconstruct and classify five weapon types: grenades, knives, guns, iron rods, and wrenches. A dataset of 1000 images of these weapons was collected from various online sources and subsequently used to generate 3605 samples in the MATLAB (R2022b) environment for creating reflectivity-added images. Background reflectivity was considered to range from 0 to 0.3 (with 0 being a perfect absorber), while object reflectivity was set between 0.8 and 1 (with 1 representing a perfect electric conductor). These images were employed to reconstruct high-resolution weapon profiles using a monostatic two-dimensional (2D) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging technique. Subsequently, the reconstructed images were classified using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithm in a Python (3.10.14) environment. The CNN architecture consists of 10 layers, including multiple convolutional, pooling, and fully connected layers, designed to effectively extract features and perform classification. The CNN model achieved high accuracy, with precision and recall values exceeding 98% across most categories, demonstrating the robustness and reliability of the model. This approach shows considerable promise for enhancing security screening technologies across a range of applications.

Background: In our study, we examined the 5-year survival of OSCC patients with HPV positive or negative status along with p16 protein expression. Method: A total of 72 biopsy tissue specimens from histologically confirmed oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients were collected. HPV detection and genotyping were performed using HPV E6/E7 and HPV- type-specific multiplex primer for nested-PCR. Immunohistochemistry evaluation of pl6 was conducted. SPSS statistical software (ver 20) was used for data analysis. Results: High risk-HPV (hr-HPV) DNA positivity was found in 27.7% (n = 20) of OSCC patients. Stage III OSCC patients were 7.80 times more likely to survive 5 years than stage IV patients (OR-7.80 CI-95%; P-0.03). Among the hr-HPV positive OSCC patients, we found that the median survival time for the 1st year (95%), 3 years (78.5%), and 5 years (38.5%) was significantly higher than that of the hr-HPV negative [1st year (78.6%), 3 years (45.2%) and 5 years (38.5%)] OSCC patients (P-0.03 The survival of male patients with hr-HPV positive OSCC is 9.75 times greater than the survival of patients with HPV negative OSCC (OR-9.75; CI-95%; P-0.05). The p16 expression level (low to overexpression) group and negative P16 expression group of OSCC patients have not demonstrated a significant association with 5-year survival. Conclusion: We conclude that in OSCC cases of North-East India, the presence of hr-HPV in OSCC cases could be a good predictor of 5-year survival rate. Expression of p16 does not appear to have any significant association with 5-year survival.

Introduction: Anthropogenic disturbances resulting from extensive mining activities in tropical regions pose significant threats to native land use, leading to deforestation, biodiversity loss, climate change impacts, environmental degradation, health risks, landscape fragmentation, compromised ecological security, and societal wellbeing. Monitoring Land Use and Land Cover Change (LULCC) becomes imperative for evaluating the extent and nature of land degradation in mined areas.Methods: This study examined and compared land cover change patterns across three coalmined sites: Sohagpur (Site-I), Jamuna & Kotma (Site-II), Bishrampur (Site-III) in Central India over 3 decades using Landsat satellite imagery from 1994, 2007, and 2022. The Maximum Likelihood (ML) algorithm, within a supervised classification framework, was applied to discern mining impacts on decadal land use shifts.Results and discussion: The analysis revealed that 7.32%–17.61% of forest cover, 5.0%–10% of water bodies, and 3%–5% of agricultural lands were lost due to mining activities, with Site three and Site two experiencing greater losses compared to Site 1. Overall, native land cover diminished by 35% between 1994 and 2022. Indices including Soil Index, Climate Index, Terrain Index, Land Utilization Index, and Vegetation Index were derived to assess land degradation patterns. These indices were integrated using a weighted index model in ArcGIS to generate the Land Degradation Vulnerability Index (LDVI). Vulnerability notably escalated with mining expansion, particularly pronounced at Site 3 (Bishrampur) and lower at Site 1 (Sohagpur). The “extremely vulnerable” class encompassed a substantial area (25%–40%), while the “low vulnerable” class was less than 5% across all sites. This study’s comprehensive analysis aids policymakers, planners, and managers in prioritizing targeted interventions and implementing sustainable land management 175 practices for ecorestoration, aligning with the goal of Zero Net Land Degradation 176 (ZNLD) in coal-mined landscapes.

Abstract The most common denture material used for dentistry is poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA). Usually, the polymeric PMMA material has numerous biological, mechanical and cost-effective shortcomings. Hence, to resolve such types of drawbacks, attempts have been made to investigate fillers of the PMMA like alumina (Al2O3), silica (SiO2), zirconia (ZrO2) etc. For the enhancement of the PMMA properties a suitable additive is required for its orthopedic applications. Herein, the main motive of this study was to synthesize a magnesium oxide (MgO) reinforced polymer-based hybrid nano-composites by using heat cure method with superior optical, biological and mechanical characteristics. For the structural and vibrational studies of the composites, XRD and FT-IR were carried out. Herein, the percentage of crystallinity for all the fabricated composites were also calculated and found to be 14.79–30.31. Various physical and optical parameters such as density, band gap, Urbach energy, cutoff energy, cutoff wavelength, steepness parameter, electron–phonon interaction, refractive index, and optical dielectric constant were also studied and their values are found to be in the range of 1.21–1.394 g/cm3, 5.44–5.48 eV, 0.167–0.027 eV, 5.68 eV, 218 nm, 0.156–0.962, 4.273–0.693, 1.937–1.932, and 3.752–3.731 respectively. To evaluate the mechanical properties like compressive strength, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of the composites a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) was used and their values were 60.3 and 101 MPa, 78 and 40.3 MPa, 5.85 and 9.8 MPa-m1/2 respectively. Tribological tests of the composites were also carried out. In order to check the toxicity, MTT assay was also carried out for the PM0 and PM15 [(x)MgO + (100 − x) (C5O2H8)n] (x = 0 and 15) composites. This study provides a comprehensive insight into the structural, physical, optical, and biological features of the fabricated PMMA-MgO composites, highlighting the potential of the PM15 composite with its enhanced density, mechanical strength, and excellent biocompatibility for denture applications.

Paraparesis following cardiac surgery is a manifestation of spinal cord injury (SCI). It can occur in any aortic surgery from the aneurysm to the coarctation of the aorta (CoA) where the cross-clamp of the aorta is applied. Though the incidence of paraplegia is low, its occurrence affects the morbidity and mortality of the patient. There are only sporadic case reports on the development of paraplegia following recurrent and technically challenging repair of CoA. However, the spontaneous development of paraplegia has also been reported in cases of unoperated CoA. The present report describes the case of delayed SCI in which paraparesis developed 5 days post a coarctation repair. The risk factors and strategies to protect the spinal cord during aortic surgeries are emphasized.

Background: Rational use of analgesic drugs is needed for immediate relief of pain. This study was conducted to find out the prescribing pattern of analgesics in the emergency department. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study among patients attending the emergency department of a tertiary care hospital from March 2022 to February 2023 after approval from the Institutional Review Committee. Demographic profile, indications for analgesics use, route, and frequency of administration were recorded based on the pre-structured questionnaires. Convenient sampling was done. Data were analyzed by using SPSS, version 20. Results: Prescription patterns of analgesics were analyzed in 325 patients. The mean age was 46.93 ± 17.79 years with a male predominance of 196 (60.6%). Orthopedic problems 99(30.5%) due to trauma were the most common indications followed by medical and surgical indications for analgesic use. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were used in 46.6%, opioids in 26.8%, combinations in 23%, and antispasmodics in 3.6%. Commonly prescribed analgesic was ketorolac (27.4%), tramadol (19.7%), and diclofenac (11.4%). The most common combination was ketorolac and tramadol (14.5%). Paracetamol alone was used in 16 (4.9%). A prescription with a generic name was 149 (45.8%). Parenteral use accounted for 86.8%. Co-administration of gastroprotective drugs was used in 93.2%. A fixed-dose combination was used in 1.2%. Conclusion: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the commonly used analgesics for various indications, including acute pain and fever. The choice of analgesics and their prescription pattern varied depending on indications, medical history, and the presence of co-morbidities. Ketorolac and tramadol were the most commonly prescribed analgesics.

The concentrated living of farmers is an important engine for rural revitalization and a new type of urbanization, thus is of great significance for the construction of a resource-saving society. Due to rapid economic development in China, some farmers have successfully urbanized through rural–urban migration, but still more than 500 million farmers, have not migrated yet. Concentrated residence has long been recognized as the best strategy to help Chinese farmers to achieve local urbanization, and has been paid much attention in the local, regional, national and global scientific community. Although robust models and policies are still lagging behind because of insufficient datasets and models. In this study, empirical model has been used in which concentrated residence cases of farmers in Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province of China taken as a case study, and strength (S), weakness (W), opportunities (O) and threats (T) as the criterion layer to identify 16 influencing factors as the index layer. For this study, data was collected during 2021 & 2022 by questioner-based survey from 6 different settlements, and AHP analytic hierarchy model integrated with SWOT was used to built farmers' concentrated residence strategies. The positioning coordinates of this study show the following weightage like S (0.480, 0), W (-0.098, 0), O (0, 0.306), and T (0, −0.116) which clearly mentions that S and O as positive influences, W and T as negative influences, and locates the respective total weights. Therefore, empirical results indicate that SO (growth-oriented) strategy should be emphasized to build robust strategies for concentrated residence of farmers. The findings of this study can provide a benign model for centralized residence for local governments, village collectives, and farmers withdrawing from homestead, and help to promote the sustainable development of society.

Urban heat islands (UHIs), which are formed by biophysical landscape transformations, have significant adverse effects on environmental quality as well as human health, resources, and facilities. Variations in UHI intensity give rise to urban hotspots (UHSs) and cold spots in different parts of the city. This study identifies such hotspots and cold spots in Delhi by classifying the city into zones of different UHI intensities using biophysical landscapes. The data on the selected biophysical landscapes were obtained from satellite images and secondary sources. The impact of different biophysical landscapes on UHI intensity was calculated using the weighted overlay method performed using ArcGIS software. The city of Delhi was thus divided into four zones, based on UHI intensity. It was found that UHSs cover about 45% of the total area and are mostly located in eastern and central Delhi. While built-up areas form the major source landscape, vegetation cover is the major sink landscape as per land surface temperature (LST) and UHI intensity. The findings of this study will help urban planners and policymakers identify UHSs and adopt suitable policies and measures to mitigate UHIs based on the different intensity zones.

Objective The objective of this study was to prepare and evaluate Triphala gritha.Methods The selected formulation Triphala ghrita was prepared as per the methodology described in Ayurvedic texts. The prepared and marketed formulations were analyzed for their physico-chemical constants using established methods in accordance with WHO guidelines the Indian Pharmacopoeia and standard protocols from the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India Herbal Pharmacopoeia and other relevant sources.Results A profile consisting of distinguishing parameters was developed to provide means of correct identification. Some important organoleptic features of Triphala ghrita laboratory and market formulations like color odour taste appearance touch etc. were documented. Physico-chemical constants were determined and documented. The formulations were tested for the presence of heavy metals microbial content pesticide residues and aflatoxin which were also found within the limits of WHO specifications. Preliminary phytochemical studies of Triphala ghrita revealed the presence of terpenoids and phenolics as chief constituents. High performance thin-layer chromatography HPTLC method was developed and reported for the quantification of ascorbic acid and gallic acid as marker constituents to ensure identity and quality of Triphala ghrita.Conclusion The studies carried out on Triphala ghrita can serve as a valuable tool and provide suitable standards for its identification. Phytochemical screening and the quantitative HPTLC assay method developed for quantification of ascorbic acid and gallic acid in Triphala ghrita can serve for the routine quality control of commercial samples and help in justifying the traditional claims endowed upon this formulation in a scientifically accepted manner.

Abstract Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a growing disease across the world; diabetes is a complex metabolic disorder in which blood glucose concentration level increases and continue for a prolonged period due to a decrease secretion of insulin or action, resulting in the disorder of carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism. The plant-related bioactive compounds have proven their efficacy with least toxicities and can be utilized for the disease treatment. Our objective is to elucidate the mechanism of action of plant bioactive compounds which can give future direction in diabetes treatment. Main body In this review paper, we briefly study more than 200 research papers related to disease and bioactive compounds that have therapeutic applicability in treatment. The plant contains many bio-active compounds which possess in vitro and in vivo anti-diabetic effect which may be responsible for the hypoglycaemic property by inhibiting the digestive enzyme i.e. alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase, by producing mimetic action of insulin, by reducing the oxidative stress, by showing antihyperglycemic activity and hypolipidemic activity, by inhibition of aldose reductase, and by increasing or enhancing glucose uptake and insulin secretion. Conclusion Our study revealed that terpenes, tannin, flavonoids, saponin, and alkaloids are important bioactive constituents for anti-diabetic activity. The mechanistic approach on alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase, hypolipidemic activity, and AR inhibitory action clear-cut explain the therapeutic applicability of these bioactive compounds in disease. Plants that contain these bioactive compounds can be good drug candidates for future research on diabetes treatment.

In the recent decades, developing nations aim to industrialize and grow sustainably often ignoring the environmental consequences. However, few empirical studies have looked at the influence of industrialization-driven economic transition on marine pollution, in particular post trade openness. This paper analyzes the nexus between trade openness, industrialization, and marine pollution. The study uses time series data (1995–2022) and applies quantile regression to analyze the impact of trade openness and industrialization on marine pollution. The finding of this study suggested that trade openness and industrialization have a significant positive impact on marine pollution. Trade activities and rapid transition towards industrialization enforced large industrial inputs resulting marine pollution. In general, industrial wastewater contains heavy metals, organic compounds, and toxic chemicals, and causes marine pollution and disturb the marine life if not treated properly. Thus, improper waste management and mitigation leads to marine pollution. Therefore, implications of strategic policy that integrates trade, industrialization, and environmental is of prime concern and need to be address for effective marine pollution mitigation and control. To minimize the environmental effects of trade and industrial operations, developed and developing nations should promote sustainable industrial practices and enforced stricter regulations in international trade.

Introduction: Kinesin family member 5A (KIF5A) is a motor neuron protein expressed in neurons and involved in anterograde transportation of organelles, proteins, and RNA. Variations in the KIF5A gene that interfere with axonal transport have emerged as a distinguishing feature in several neurodegenerative disorders, including hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP10), Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2 (CMT2), and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).Methods: In this study, we implemented a computational structural and systems biology approach to uncover the role of KIF5A in ALS. Using the computational structural biology method, we explored the role of non-synonymous Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (nsSNPs) in KIF5A. Further, to identify the potential inhibitory molecule against the highly destabilizing structure variant, we docked 24 plant-derived phytochemicals involved in ALS.Results: We found KIF5AS291F variant showed the most structure destabilizing behavior and the phytocompound “epigallocatechin gallate” showed the highest binding affinity (−9.0 Kcal/mol) as compared to wild KIF5A (−8.4 Kcal/mol). Further, with the systems biology approach, we constructed the KIF5A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network to identify the associated Kinesin Families (KIFs) proteins, modules, and their function. We also constructed a transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulatory network of KIF5A. With the network topological parameters of PPIN (Degree, Bottleneck, Closeness, and MNC) using CytoHubba and computational knock-out experiment using Network Analyzer, we found KIF1A, 5B, and 5C were the significant proteins. The functional modules were highly enriched with microtubule motor activity, chemical synaptic transmission in neurons, GTP binding, and GABA receptor activity. In regulatory network analysis, we found KIF5A post-transcriptionally down-regulated by miR-107 which is further transcriptionally up-regulated by four TFs (HIF1A, PPARA, SREBF1, and TP53) and down-regulated by three TFs (ZEB1, ZEB2, and LIN28A).Discussion: We concluded our study by finding a crucial variant of KIF5A and its potential therapeutic target (epigallocatechin gallate) and KIF5A associated significant genes with important regulators which could decrypt the novel therapeutics in ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Introduction: Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors were initially used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and subsequently, it was shown to be useful in heart failure among patients with or without diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to find out the prevalence of empagliflozin use among patients with heart failure in an outpatient department of medicine in a Tertiary care centre. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among patients with heart failure attending the outpatient Department of Internal Medicine from 1 December 2022 to 30 May 2023 after obtaining ethical approval from the Institutional Review Committee. All patients with heart failure in the given study period were included. A convenience sampling method was used. The point estimate was calculated at a 95% Confidence Interval. Results: Out of 550 patients, 188 (34.18%) (30.22-38.15, 95% Confidence Interval) received empagliflozin. The mean age was 55.11±9.99 years. A total of 124 (65.95%) were male. The mean duration of use was 104.97±63.16 days. Among the adverse effects, electrolyte imbalance was present in 14 (7.44%), hypotension in 14 (7.44%), and acute kidney injury in 12 (6.38%). Conclusions: The prevalence of empagliflozin use among patients with heart failure was found to be lower than mentioned in the guidelines.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a power transfer technique widely used in many industrial applications, medical applications, and electric vehicles (EVs). This paper deals with the dynamic modeling of the resonant inverter employed in the WPT systems for EVs. To this end, the Generalized State-Space Averaging and the Laplace Phasor Transform techniques have been the flagship methods employed so far. In this paper, the modeling of the resonant inverter is accomplished by using the novel Modulated Variable Laplace Transform (MVLT) method. Firstly, the MVLT technique is discussed in detail, and then it is applied to model a study-case resonant inverter. Finally, a study-case resonant inverter is developed and utilized to validate the theoretical results with MATLAB/Simulink.

IntroductionThe fungal pathogen Fusarium verticillioides (Sacc.) Nirenberg (Fv) causes considerable agricultural and economic losses and is harmful to animal and human health. Fv can infect maize throughout its long agricultural cycle, and root infection drastically affects maize growth and yield.MethodsThe root cell wall is the first physical and defensive barrier against soilborne pathogens such as Fv. This study compares two contrasting genotypes of maize (Zea mays L.) roots that are resistant (RES) or susceptible (SUS) to Fv infection by using transcriptomics, fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy analyses, and ddPCR.ResultsSeeds were infected with a highly virulent local Fv isolate. Although Fv infected both the RES and SUS genotypes, infection occurred faster in SUS, notably showing a difference of three to four days. In addition, root infections in RES were less severe in comparison to SUS infections. Comparative transcriptomics (rate +Fv/control) were performed seven days after inoculation (DAI). The analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in each rate revealed 733 and 559 unique transcripts that were significantly (P ≤0.05) up and downregulated in RES (+Fv/C) and SUS (+Fv/C), respectively. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis identified coumarin and furanocoumarin biosynthesis, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and plant-pathogen interaction pathways as being highly enriched with specific genes involved in cell wall modifications in the RES genotype, whereas the SUS genotype mainly displayed a repressed plant–pathogen interaction pathway and did not show any enriched cell wall genes. In particular, cell wall-related gene expression showed a higher level in RES than in SUS under Fv infection. Analysis of DEG abundance made it possible to identify transcripts involved in response to abiotic and biotic stresses, biosynthetic and catabolic processes, pectin biosynthesis, phenylpropanoid metabolism, and cell wall biosynthesis and organization. Root histological analysis in RES showed an increase in lignified cells in the sclerenchymatous hypodermis zone during Fv infection.DiscussionThese differences in the cell wall and lignification could be related to an enhanced degradation of the root hairs and the epidermis cell wall in SUS, as was visualized by SEM. These findings reveal that components of the root cell wall are important against Fv infection and possibly other soilborne phytopathogens.

Aortic transection following blunt trauma chest is one of the main life-threatening situations requiring early intervention. The endovascular approach is now preferred; however, in some conditions, an open approach is warranted. We describe our experience of dealing with acute traumatic transection in six such patients over the past 3 years.

Myocardial ischemia after arterial switch operation is most commonly associated with imperfect translocation of coronary arteries to the neoaorta. Early post-operative myocardial ischemia is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in these patients. We present a rare case of intra-operative myocardial ischemia after ASO, detected with transesophageal echocardiography before electrocardiography changes.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease, progressive nature characterizes by loss of both upper and lower motor neuron functions. One of the major challenge is to understand the mechanism of ALS multifactorial nature. We aimed to explore some key genes related to ALS through bioinformatics methods for its therapeutic intervention. Here, we applied a systems biology approach involving experimentally validated 148 ALS-associated proteins and construct ALS protein-protein interaction network (ALS-PPIN). The network was further statistically analysed and identified bottleneck-hubs. The network is also subjected to identify modules which could have similar functions. The interaction between the modules and bottleneck-hubs provides the functional regulatory role of the ALS mechanism. The ALS-PPIN demonstrated a hierarchical scale-free nature. We identified 17 bottleneck-hubs, in which CDC5L, SNW1, TP53, SOD1, and VCP were the high degree nodes (hubs) in ALS-PPIN. CDC5L was found to control highly cluster modules and play a vital role in the stability of the overall network followed by SNW1, TP53, SOD1, and VCP. HSPA5 and HSPA8 acting as a common connector for CDC5L and TP53 bottleneck-hubs. The functional and disease association analysis showed ALS has a strong correlation with mRNA processing, protein deubiquitination, and neoplasms, nervous system, immune system disease classes. In the future, biochemical investigation of the observed bottleneck-hubs and their interacting partners could provide a further understanding of their role in the pathophysiology of ALS.

Hibiscus moscheutos L. ‘Berry Awesome’ is a complex hybrid of the new Proven Winners Summerific series of varieties with highly ornamental characteristics. Micropropagation of highly ornamental varieties is important for mass production of planting material for commercial purposes. The traditional methods for propagating Hibiscus varieties, such as cuttings or seed propagation, however, do not guarantee high rates of production of high-quality seedlings. To solve this problem, an attempt was made to develop protocols for micropropagation of Hibiscus moscheutos L. ‘Berry Awesome’ in vitro on agar and liquid medium using a bioreactor system, followed by ex vitro adaptation of the regenerants. The optimal method for sterilization of nodal explants as well as the optimal composition of the initiation medium for shoot proliferation and rooting were determined. For micropropagation on a liquid medium, a rocker-type bioreactor was used, and its advantages over micropropagation on an agar medium were demonstrated. The results showed that the best sterilization method for nodal segment explants was as follows: pretreatment by rinsing with running tap water, sterile water, and distilled water for 70 min and soaking for 5 min in a mixture of solutions of ethyl alcohol (96%), hydrogen peroxide (38%), and water in a ratio of 1:1:2. In this case, live and sterile explants accounted for 62.6%. The optimal initiation medium for axillary buds in nodal segments was the Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.1 mg L−1 N-(2-chloro-4-pyridinyl)-N’-phenylurea (CPPU), which resulted in 73.3% of axillary buds being induced. The optimal solid proliferation medium was MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg L−1 CPPU with a proliferation coefficient of 5.8. In a liquid medium, the optimal concentration of CPPU was 0.05 mg L−1 with a proliferation coefficient of 9.2. The best medium for rooting/shoots with agar and in bioreactors was MS medium with the addition of 0.1 mg L−1 indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). The highest rooting rate was 99.0% in both types of media, and the survival rate of plantlets was 88.7% in solid media and 98.7% in the bioreactor.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to predict time in therapeutic range (TTR) using clinical history, examination, and socioeconomic data. Study included warfarin-receiving patients from outpatient-clinic. In 203 patients studied, mean warfarin start-dose was 2.55 mg/day and maintenance-dose/week was 30.79 mg. Body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.03), warfarin maintenance dose/day (p = 0.02), and comorbidity presence (p = 0.04) were significantly associated with TTR. Occupation (p = 0.53), income (p = 0.83), education (p = 0.55), and socioeconomic score (p = 0.73) showed non-significant association with TTR. A TTR predicting nomogram was built from clinical history and examination findings.

Abstract Organizing pneumonia (OP) is one of the rare pulmonary manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) which is infrequently reported as a presenting manifestation. Early diagnosis of lupus‐related OP with the help of imaging, can drive to prompt initiation of immunosuppressive therapy leading to a better prognosis. We present a case of a 34‐year‐old young male who presented with fever, myalgia, and a dry cough for 1 month and was later diagnosed as SLE‐related organizing pneumonia.

Introduction: Electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities in Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-2019) patients are largely unknown. ECG changes in COVID-19 disease may guide to initiate therapeutic anticoagulation, more so in moderate and severe disease. Aims: To identify various ECG changes in moderate and severe COVID-19 patients and to ascertain the association between initial ECG changes and disease outcome. Materials and Methods: This was retrospective record-based study was conducted in the Department of Internal Medicine, Birsa Munda Medical College, Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh, India, on 216 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 in a tertiary care teaching hospital from March 2021 to June 2021. Introduction: Chronic kidney disease is a condition, which worsens the quality of life in many ways including thyroid disorder in many cases. The aim of the study was to find out the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism among chronic kidney disease patients admitted to the Nephrology Department of a tertiary care centre. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on the patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease at a tertiary care hospital from 15 May 2022 to 10 October 2022 after getting ethical approval from the Institutional Review Committee (Reference number: 621/2022). Pre-designed proforma was used to collect demographic data like age, sex, height and weight. Blood samples of the patients were analysed for thyroid function tests (triiodothyronine, thyroxine and thyroid stimulating hormone levels) by chemiluminescence immunoassay. Convenience sampling was used. Point estimate and 95% Confidence Interval were calculated. Results: Out of 156 study participants with chronic kidney disease, subclinical hypothyroidism was present in 34 (21.79%) (15.31-28.27, 95% Confidence Interval) patients. Conclusions: The prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism amongst chronic kidney disease patients was found to be lower than in other similar studies conducted in similar settings.

Subacute right ventricular perforation by a pacemaker lead is a rare complication. Although occasionally asymptomatic, complicated cases are usually evidently symptomatic. Here, we report a 70-year-old man presented with mild left-sided chest pain three days after permanent pacemaker implantation. Suspected of ventricular perforation by the pacemaker lead on chest X-ray, device interrogation revealed non-corroborative parameters. This warranted a computed tomography (CT) scan, which confirmed the diagnosis, detected hemopneumothorax, and helped plan surgical intervention. The patient underwent surgical management with the placement of an epicardial pacemaker lead and was discharged after five days. Our case illustrates a rare report of subtle clinical presentation in a patient with subacute right ventricular perforation by a pacemaker lead complicated by hemopneumothorax. It further recapitulates the role of CT scan in providing definitive diagnostic information in managing such a patient. Anticipation of such a presentation is essential for primary care physicians, who are often a first contact point for a patient in the community. This requires a high index of suspicion in such patients presenting with minimal symptoms. Early recognition and timely referral by a family physician may prevent untoward consequences of device-related complications.

A two-dimensional (2D) dynamically reconfigurable metasurface aperture is presented to perform frequency selective through wall imaging (TWI) with an unknown structure of the wall. Generally, in TWI, the medium properties and thickness of the wall need to be known in advance, which is not always possible. Moreover, compensating for these effects can significantly increase the computational complexity. We propose a two-stage method that leverages the concept of a dynamically reconfigurable metasurface antenna (DMA) in a narrow frequency band in which the effects of the wall are minimum to perform TWI. First, two simple probe antennas are used to evaluate the reflection response of the wall by means of a simple backscatter measurement. Based on these characteristics, a narrow band frequency selective window is identified. Second, a DMA consisting of an array of tunable metamaterial elements is used for TWI in the identified frequency selective window. The DMA aperture enables the scene information to be sampled through a set of spatio-temporally varying quasi-random modes using a single-channel transmit and receive architecture. This physical-layer compression scheme can significantly simplify the data acquisition while the quasi-random sampling of the scene information eliminates the need for conventional raster-scan based modalities.

A new category of immune-related adverse effects has been identified due to increasing use of immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy to treat solid organ cancers. Pembrolizumab approved for renal cell carcinoma also has neurological immune-related adverse effects causing long-term morbidity. We here present a case of renal cell carcinoma post nephrectomy with suspected pembrolizumab (anti-PD-1)-induced encephalitis presenting as light headedness and dizziness treated with high dose of corticosteroid and intravenous immunoglobulin. Lumbar puncture was performed which showed elevated protein, nucleated cells with lymphocyte predominant, suggestive of chemical meningitis. Scans were found to be normal while electroencephalogram showed diffuse cerebral dysfunction indicating encephalopathy. The patient was under pembrolizumab treatment so encephalitis was suspected. Clinical attention is necessary when patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors appear with new neurological symptoms to prevent long-term morbidity or even possible mortality.

Nearly 2.4 billion people globally (one-third of the world's population) use solid biomass fuels as their primary energy source for cooking which is a major cause of household air pollution. According to sustainable development goal 7, women primarily responsible for household cooking bear a significant health burden by using solid biomass-based stoves that often does not meet emission targets. As an imperative source of total suspended particulate matter, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and volatile organic compounds, biomass fumes exposure is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Long-term use of solid fuel in household cooking may lead to epigenetic reprogramming, including changes in the expression patterns of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) intimately linked to increased breast cancer (BC) risk. Currently, no specific non-invasive epigenetic markers are available to diagnose BC at an early stage. Cell-free circulating epigenomic signatures such as miRNAs, lncRNAs, and mRNAs regulate intrinsic molecular signaling pathways in breast cancer. Therefore, it is indispensable to assess the feasibility of establishing miRNAs, lncRNAs, and mRNAs as combinatorial triad biomarkers for the early risk assessment and effective management of breast cancer in vulnerable populations. Here, we critically examined various facets entailed in miRNAs-lncRNAs-mRNAs deregulation that might enhance our knowledge of the molecular mechanisms underlying breast cancer risk associated with biomass fumes exposure.

The security of prepare-and-measure satellite-based quantum key distribution (QKD), under restricted eavesdropping scenarios, is addressed. We particularly consider cases where the eavesdropper, Eve, has limited access to the transmitted signal by Alice and/or Bob’s receiver station. This restriction is modeled by lossy channels between relevant parties, where the transmissivity of such channels can, in principle, be bounded by monitoring techniques. An artifact of such lossy channels is the possibility of having bypass channels, those that are not accessible to Eve but that may not necessarily be characterized by the users either. This creates interesting unexplored scenarios for analyzing QKD security. In this paper, we obtain generic bounds on the key rate in the presence of bypass channels and apply them to continuous-variable QKD protocols with Gaussian encoding with direct and reverse reconciliation. We find regimes of operation in which the above restrictions on Eve can considerably improve system performance. We also develop customized bounds for several protocols in the BB84 family and show that, in certain regimes, even the simple protocol of BB84 with weak coherent pulses is able to offer positive key rates at high channel losses, which would otherwise be impossible under an unrestricted Eve. In this case, the limitation on Eve would allow Alice to send signals with larger intensities than the optimal value under an ideal Eve, which effectively reduces the effective channel loss. In all these cases, the part of the transmitted signal that does not reach Eve can play a nontrivial role in specifying the achievable key rate. Our work opens up new security frameworks for spaceborne quantum communications systems.

The future quantum internet will leverage existing communication infrastructures, including deployed optical fibre networks, to enable novel applications that outperform current information technology. In this scenario, we perform a feasibility study of quantum communications over an industrial 224 km submarine optical fibre link deployed between Southport in the United Kingdom (UK) and Portrane in the Republic of Ireland (IE). With a characterisation of phase drift, polarisation stability and the arrival time of entangled photons, we demonstrate the suitability of the link to enable international UK–IE quantum communications for the first time.

The growing global concern about antimicrobial resistance necessitates alternative strategies against multidrug-resistant bacteria. Our study explores the antimicrobial potential of phenolic compounds from Tinto Cão grape winemaking by-products. These compounds effectively combat S. epidermidis, K. pneumoniae, and L. monocytogenes, showing promise in addressing antimicrobial resistance. Additionally, we found remarkable antioxidant activity in these compounds. Shoot extracts exhibited the strongest antimicrobial performance, while seed and leaf extracts displayed the highest antioxidant capacity. These findings highlight phenolic compounds as a sustainable solution to address multidrug-resistant bacteria, offering an alternative to traditional antibiotics.

Zinc–air batteries (ZABs) have garnered significant interest as a viable substitute for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), primarily due to their impressive energy density and low cost. However, the efficacy of zinc–air batteries is heavily dependent on electrocatalysts, which play a vital role in enhancing reaction efficiency and stability. This scholarly review article highlights the crucial significance of electrocatalysts in zinc–air batteries and explores the rationale behind employing Fe-Co-Ni-Zn-based metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived hybrid materials as potential electrocatalysts. These MOF-derived electrocatalysts offer advantages such as abundancy, high catalytic activity, tunability, and structural stability. Various synthesis methods and characterization techniques are employed to optimize the properties of MOF-derived electrocatalysts. Such electrocatalysts exhibit excellent catalytic activity, stability, and selectivity, making them suitable for applications in ZABs. Furthermore, they demonstrate notable capabilities in the realm of ZABs, encompassing elevated energy density, efficacy, and prolonged longevity. It is imperative to continue extensively researching and developing this area to propel the advancement of ZAB technology forward and pave the way for its practical implementation across diverse fields.

Polyherbal formulation (PHF) enhances therapeutic efficacy and minimizes side effects by reducing individual herb dosages. Allopolyherbal formulation (APHF) combines polyherbal extracts with allopathic medication, effectively reducing the latter’s required dose and mitigating associated adverse effects. The current study intends to assess the anti-diabetic effects of PHF and APHF in-vivo. Dried raw powders of Cassia auriculata leaf, Centella asiatica leaf, and Zingiber officinale rhizome were extracted by cold maceration process using 70% ethanol. These extracts were combined in three different ratios to make PHF. PHF was subjected to qualitative and quantitative phytochemical investigations. APHF has been prepared by combining a potent ratio of PHF with metformin in three different ratios. The compatibility of APHF has been confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In vivo activity was also evaluated in streptozotocin-induced diabetic albino rats. PHF (3 different ratios at a dose of 200–400 mg/kg b.w), APHF (combination of PHF and metformin in 3 different ratios, 200 + 22.5, 200 + 45, and 200 + 67.5 mg/kg b.w), and metformin (90 mg/kg b.w) were administered to albino rats for 21 consecutive days. Blood glucose levels were estimated on the 1st, 7th, 14th, and 21st days of treatment. On the 21st day, blood was collected by cardiac puncture for biochemical analysis. The liver and pancreas were isolated and subjected to histopathological analysis. PHF and APHF showed significant anti-diabetic and antihyperlipidemic efficacy. In comparison to PHF, APHF had the most promising action. The current study demonstrated that PHF and APHF are safe and efficacious drugs in the treatment of diabetes mellitus as they help to replace or lower the dose of metformin, thereby decreasing the risks of metformin.

Wave energy is one of the most available sources of renewable energy in the world. It has been previously proven that the flapping foil can generate thrust forces using energy from the surface waves and an empirical formula was proposed to predict the thrust forces generated by a flapping foil consist of NACA0015 section (Kumar and Shin, 2019a). However, the proposed empirical formula was restricted to the head waves i.e. 0° azimuth angle which was not useful for the flapping foils encountering with oblique and following waves. Therefore, in this study, the thrust empirical formula was modified to include the effects of azimuth angles based on the experimentally obtained data. And the modified empirical equations were validated by the combination of foils experimentally.

According to the World Health Organization, Heart disease is the number one killer of humans, with coronary heart disease (CHD) being the most common type of heart disease. CHD leads to myocardial ischemia (MI) or infarction. Several clinical tests are available to assist physicians in diagnosing MI or infarcted (unhealthy) patients. However, diagnostic tests can be costly, invasive, and unreliable in identifying patients with declining coronary health conditions. This study investigated the application of Machine Learning (ML) techniques on the Vector Magnitude (VM) data of heart signals generated via Vectorcardiography (VCG) to classify unhealthy patients from healthy patients. Patients with MI, a CHD, are identified as ill patients. Three machine-learning classification techniques: Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Decision Trees (DT), were applied to classify healthy and unhealthy (MI) patients. The heart signal dataset was acquired from the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) Diagnostic electrocardiogram (ECG) Database. A 10-fold cross-validation sampling method was used to improve the predictability of the sample. Results from ML techniques produced high classification sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. ML analysis findings indicated that DT is the best predictor for classification accuracy, followed by SVM and ANN. The future study goal is to expand the study with forward-looking data and the right sample size for clinical validity and support the high accuracy results.

Abstract Background Recently reported cases of Covid-19 globally remind us that new diseases are coming while we are unable to provide the treatment for the same. The entire world is facing this viral attack; deaths are increasing day by day as well as infected patients too. Today, in the period of this disease, can we go to the shelter of our traditional medicines? Main body In this article, we have taken medicines related to corona and conceptualized their mechanism, which gave us a chance to understand Garlic's mechanism of action, how Garlic can be a weapon in the lane with this disease. This article also tells how we can treat new diseases with our traditional herbs if no modern medicine has been discovered yet. Conclusion The present review is based on the structure of the virus and the targeted site for the drug discovery process with important constituents of Allium sativam. The review work also explains the allicin chemical constituent of Allium sativam which has targeted therapeutic sites related to Covid-19.

Background: Prescription of rational drugs is needed to save critically ill patients. This study was conducted to assess the prescription patterns of drugs in the intensive care unit. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study among patients admitted in intensive care unit from March 2020 to February 2021 after approval from the Institutional Review Committee (ref no. 344 /2019). Demographic profile, prescription patterns, the average number of drugs used, route of administration, and duration of hospitalization were recorded based on the pre-structured questionnaires. Convenient sampling was chosen. Data were analyzed by SPSS, version 20. Results: Prescription patterns of 225 were analyzed. The mean age was 55.60 ± 20.16 years with a male predominance of 131(58.2%). Cardiac disorders 57(25.3%) were the most common admitting diagnosis followed by pulmonary, neurological, and kidney disorders. The average length of hospital stay was 4.14 days (range 1-38 days). A total of 887 drugs were prescribed. The mean number of drugs prescribed per patient was 7.71 ± 1.92. Parenteral drugs accounted for 81.39%. Antibiotics were prescribed to all patients. Intravenous fluids were given to 62.2% of patients, blood and blood products to 21.33%. Thromboprophylaxis was used in 15 (6.7%) patients. Seven hundred twenty-two (81.39%) drugs were injectables, 129(14.54%) were used by the oral or nasogastric route and 36 (4.05%) were inhaled drugs. Conclusion: Newer generations antibiotics were the most commonly prescribed drugs. Pantoprazole, Metoclopramide, and Hydrocortisone were the top three most commonly prescribed individual drugs. There was marked underuse of thromboprophylaxis, analgesics, and sedatives.

Abstract Background Ocular manifestations of infective endocarditis are nonspecific and rare. Endophthalmitis, retinal artery occlusion, Roth spots and vitreal and retinal infiltrations can all be seen with infective endocarditis. Also, infective endocarditis involving the left atrial appendage with no involvement of the mitral valve apparatus is a rarity. Case presentation Here we report a case of infective endocarditis of the heart involving the left atrial appendage presenting with features of endogenous endophthalmitis which ultimately progressed to phthisis bulbi with subtle cardiac symptoms in a previous healthy young adult. Conclusion Infective endocarditis involving the left chambers of the heart carries an inherent high risk of systemic embolization. Panophthalmitis which is considered to be the most severe form of endogenous endophthalmitis is a rare presenting feature. Although a definitive treatment algorithm is lacking, early surgery and parenteral antibiotics along with local antibiotic injections could help to save the vision.

In this article, the impact of an anthropogenically transformed environment on the content of pharmaceutically valuable biologically active compounds in medicinal plants is analyzed. The studied biologically active substances included phenolic compounds (flavonoids, anthocyanins, tannins, and phenolic acids). The number of transmissible forms of heavy metals (HMs), including cadmium, lead, and mercury, were discharged from factories that are present in the soil. Plants uptake these toxic metals from the soil. HM causes changes in the activity of the several enzymes such as phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), chalcone synthase (CHS), chalcone isomerase (CHI) and other enzymes. These enzymes play an important role in biosynthesis of phenolic compounds in medicinal plants. It has been demonstrated that plant materials possess high antioxidant potential due to their high phenolic content. As a result, the present review discusses a thorough investigation of anthropogenically transformed environment effects on the quantity of pharmaceutically valuable phenolic compounds in medicinal plants.

Two different arrangements for Wireless Battery Charging Systems (WBCSs) with a series-parallel resonant topology have been analyzed in this paper. The first arrangement charges the battery by controlling the receiver-side rectifier current and voltage without a chopper, while the second arrangement charges it with a chopper while keeping the chopper input voltage constant. The comparison of these two arrangements is made based on their performance on various figures of merit, such as the sizing factor of both the supply voltage source and receiver coil, overall system efficiency, power-transfer ratio, receiver efficiency, and cost estimation. Later, the simulated study is verified by the experimental setup designed to charge the electric vehicle.

Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is an uncommonly encountered cyanotic congenital heart disease characterized by anomalous drainage of the pulmonary veins. Concomitant venous anomalies are rarely found in these patients. We present a case of an infra-cardiac TAPVC with an intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, where a vascular channel was seen between the middle hepatic vein and the left branch of the portal vein with fusiform dilatation of the latter, diagnosed on computed tomography angiography.
