Large sample datasets of in situ evapotranspiration (ET) measurements with well documented data provenance and quality assurance are critical for water management and many fields of earth science research. We present a post-processed ET oriented dataset at daily and monthly timesteps, from 161 stations, including 148 eddy covariance flux towers, that were chosen based on their data quality from nearly 350 stations across the contiguous United States. In addition to ET, the data includes energy and heat fluxes, meteorological measurements, and reference ET downloaded from gridMET for each flux station. Data processing techniques were conducted in a reproducible manner using open-source software. Most data initially came from the public AmeriFlux network, however, several different networks (e.g., the USDA-Agricultural Research Service) and university partners provided data that was not yet public. Initial half-hourly energy balance data were gap-filled and aggregated to daily frequency, and turbulent fluxes were corrected for energy balance closure error using the FLUXNET2015/ONEFlux energy balance ratio approach. Metadata, diagnostics of energy balance, and interactive graphs of time series data are included for each station. Although the dataset was developed primarily to benchmark satellite-based remote sensing ET models of the OpenET initiative, there are many other potential uses, such as validation for a range of regional hydrologic and atmospheric models.

Small-scale surface heterogeneities can influence land-atmosphere fluxes and therefore carbon, water and energy budgets on larger scale. This effect is of particular relevance for high-latitude ecosystems, because of the great amount of carbon stored in their soils. We introduce a novel micro-topographic model, the Hummock-Hollow (HH) model, which explicitly represents small-scale surface elevation changes. By computing the water table at the small scale, and by coupling the model with a process-based model for soil methane processes, we are able to model effects of micro-topography on hydrology and methane emissions in a typical boreal peatland. In order to assess the effect of micro-topography on water balance and methane emissions of the peatland we compare two versions of the model, one with a representation of micro-topography and a classical single-bucket model version, and show that the temporal variability in the model version with micro-topography performs better if compared with local data. Accounting for micro-topography almost triples the cumulative methane flux over the simulated time-slice. We found that the single-bucket model underestimates methane emissions because of its poor performance in representing hydrological dynamics. The HH model with micro-topography captures the spatial dynamics of water and methane fluxes, being able to identify the hotspots for methane emissions. The model also identifies a critical scale (0.01 km²) which marks the minimal resolution for the explicit representation of micro-topography in larger-scale models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Upscaling the properties and the effects of small-scale surface heterogeneities to larger scales is a challenging issue in land surface modeling.We developed a novel approach to upscale local methane emissions in a boreal peatland from the micro-topographic scale to the landscape-scale. We based this new parameterization on the analysis of the water table pattern generated by the Hummock-Hollow model, a micro-topography resolving model for peatland hydrology. We introduce this parameterization of methane hotspots in a global model-like version of the Hummock-Hollow model, that underestimates methane emissions. We tested the robustness of the parameterization by simulating methane emissions for the next century forcing the model with three different RCP scenarios. The Hotspot parameterization, despite being calibrated for the 1976-2005 climatology, mimics the output of the micro-topography resolving model for all the simulated scenarios. The new approach bridges the scale gap of methane emissions between this version of the model and the configuration explicitly resolving micro-topography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper evaluates the relative contribution of light and temperature on net ecosystem CO2 uptake during the 2006 growing season in a polygonal tundra ecosystem in the Lena River Delta in Northern Siberia (72°22' N, 126°30' E). The occurrence and frequency of warm periods may be an important determinant of the magnitude of the ecosystem's carbon sink function, as they drive temperature induced changes in respiration. Hot spells during the early portion of the growing season, when the photosynthetic apparatus of vascular plants is not fully developed, are shown to be more influential in creating positive mid-day surface-to-atmosphere net ecosystem CO2 exchange fluxes than those occurring later in the season. In this work we also develop and present a multi-step bulk flux partition model to better account for tundra plant physiology and the specific light conditions of the arctic region. These conditions preclude the successful use of traditional partition methods that derive a respiration-temperature relationship from all nighttime data or from other bulk approaches that are insensitive to temperature or light stress. Nighttime growing season measurements are rare during the arctic summer, however, so the new method allows for temporal variation in the parameters describing both ecosystem respiration and gross uptake by fitting both processes at the same time. Much of the apparent temperature sensitivity of respiration seen in the traditional partition method is revealed in the new method to reflect seasonal changes in basal respiration rates. Understanding and quantifying the flux partition is an essential precursor to describing links between assimilation and respiration at different timescales, as it allows a more confident evaluation of measured net exchange over a broader range of environmental conditions. The growing season CO2 sink estimated by this study is similar to those reported previously for this site, and is substantial enough to withstand the long, low-level respiratory CO2 release during the rest of the year to maintain the site's CO2 sink function on an annual basis. Seventeen piglets were infected with a continuous intravenous infusion of live group B beta-hemolytic streptococci (GBS). Hemodynamic changes were recorded, and blood samples were drawn for measurement of thromboxane B2 (TxB2) (stable metabolite of thromboxane A2) and 6-keto-PGF1 alpha (stable metabolite of prostacyclin). Control animals (n = 9) received only bacteria, while treatment animals (n = 8) received indomethacin, 3 mg/kg IV, 15 min after the start of the bacterial infusion. Control animals responded to the bacteria within 15 min with marked elevation in mean pulmonary artery pressure (Ppa) from 15 +/- 8 to 39 +/- 6 mm Hg and decline in PaO2 from 80 +/- 11 to 51 +/- 6 mm Hg and cardiac output (CO) from 0.24 +/- 0.07 to 0.13 +/- 0.07 liters/min/kg. Mean arterial blood pressure (AoP) significantly decreased from baseline value of 95 +/- 13 to 51 +/- 32 mm Hg by 180 min. In animals treated with indomethacin, these changes were reversed or significantly attenuated. The hemodynamic changes were associated temporally with elevations in plasma concentrations of TxB2 or 6-keto-PGF1 alpha. In the first 60 min, TxB2 levels in both groups correlated with Ppa (r = 0.72, p less than 0.001) and PaO2 (r = -0.60, p less than 0.001). A strong negative correlation between TxB2 and CO was observed over the first 180 min (r = -0.73, p less than 0.001). There was a statistically significant correlation between AoP and 6-keto-PGF1 alpha concentration between 60 and 180 min (r = -0.54, p less than 0.002). The short-term effects of muscle relaxation with pancuronium bromide on arterial blood gas values, heart rate, and arterial blood pressure were studied in 49 neonates receiving mechanical ventilation. After pancuronium administration, mean PaO2 increased from 61.9 +/- 30.0 to 80.9 +/- 52.8 mm Hg (P = 0.006), mean PaCO2 decreased from 40.1 +/- 13.0 to 37.5 +/- 13.3 mm Hg (P = 0.03), and mean heart rate rose from 146.2 +/- 24.9 to 161.0 +/- 20.5 beats/min (P less than 0.001). Arterial blood pressure did not change significantly. When results were analyzed by diagnosis (meconium aspiration syndrome, hyaline membrane disease, pneumonia), only infants with meconium aspiration syndrome had a significant improvement in oxygenation (P = 0.008). Six of 18 patients with hyaline membrane disease responded to muscle relaxation, with a decrease in PaO2 of 10 mm Hg or more. No significant correlation was found between change in PaO2 and birth weight, gestational age, postnatal age, or change in heart rate. A weak correlation (r = -0.37, P less than 0.006) was observed between change in PaO2 and change in PaCO2. Although the reasons for the divergence in response in different groups of patients are not entirely clear, the risk of deterioration with pancuronium therapy should be kept in mind, particularly if treatment in an infant with hyaline membrane disease is being considered.
