In this work, we study how different air-inflow velocities affect the apple-temperature distribution during forced-convection cooling of individual apples by simultaneously modeling airflow and heat transfer. In general, an increase in airflow velocity increases the cooling rate and heat transfer fluxes across the apple surface and decreases cooling time. The results show that a reasonable increase in cooling rate is obtained with an increase in airflow velocity to 2.5 m/s; any further increase in airflow velocity simply wastes energy because it leads to a relatively low increase in cooling and heat transfer fluxes across the apple surface. By comparing the temperature simulated with and without accounting for respiratory heat, the maximum temperature difference is ∼0.033 K during cooling. Therefore, respiratory heat has a negligible effect on the temperature variations of fruit. The model was verified by comparing its results with those of experiments. The predicted results are consistent with the measured results. Practical Applications To ensure the quality and safety of horticultural products and extend their storage and shelf life across the entire cold chain, a critical step in the postharvest cold chain is the rapid precooling after harvest to remove field heat. In this work, we investigate how to improve the cooling rate and minimize the cooling time during forced-convection cooling of apples. In addition, the effect of respiratory heat on temperature variations of fruit is also studied. This research provides not only a more detailed understanding of flow distribution and temperature variations of fruit during cooling, but also a reliable theoretical basis for minimizing unnecessary energy consumption during forced-convection cooling of produce. The geographical origin traceability of food and agro-products has been attracted worldwide. Especially with the rise of machine learning (ML) technology, it provides cutting-edge solutions to erstwhile intractable issues to identify the origin of food and agro-products. By utilizing advanced algorithms, ML can extract feature information of food and agro-products that is closely related to origin and, more accurately, identify and trace their origins, which is of great significance to the entire food and agriculture industry. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art applications of ML in the geographical origin traceability of food and agro-products. First, commonly used ML methods are summarized. The paper then outlines the whole process of preparation for modeling, model training as well as model evaluation for building traceability models-based ML. Finally, recent applications of ML combined with different traceability techniques in the field of food and agro-products are revisited. Although ML has made many achievements in solving the geographical origin traceability problem of food and agro-products, it still has great development potential. For example, the application of ML is yet insufficient in the geographical origin traceability using DNA or computer vision techniques. EFSA was requested by the European Commission (in accordance with Article 29 of Regulation (EC) No 178/2002) to provide a scientific opinion on the application of new developments in biotechnology (new genomic techniques, NGTs) to viable microorganisms and products of category 4 to be released into the environment or placed on the market as or in food and feed, and to non-viable products of category 3 to be placed on the market as or in food and feed. A horizon scanning exercise identified a variety of products containing microorganisms obtained with NGTs (NGT-Ms), falling within the remit of EFSA, that are expected to be placed on the (EU) market in the next 10 years. No novel potential hazards/risks from NGT-Ms were identified as compared to those obtained by established genomic techniques (EGTs), or by conventional mutagenesis. Due to the higher efficiency, specificity and predictability of NGTs, the hazards related to the changes in the genome are likely to be less frequent in NGT-Ms than those modified by EGTs and conventional mutagenesis. It is concluded that EFSA guidances are 'partially applicable', therefore on a case-by-case basis for specific NGT-Ms, fewer requirements may be needed. Some of the EFSA guidances are 'not sufficient' and updates are recommended. Cold chain disruption and refrigeration failures are common issues in the logistics of perishable food products. In these cases, the use of pallet covers should be very useful, delaying the increase of product temperatures inside the pallets until cooling conditions are restored. However, there are no studies about the performance of pallet covers in these types of situations, which could persist for hours. This paper evaluates the performance of three different types of cold chain covers versus having no cover for three different types of vegetables (chard, cucumbers, and carrots). A refrigeration failure during the cold chain was simulated. The three covers presented an improvement in temperature loss compared to the no-cover situation, with the average time for the temperature to increase from 4 to 10 °C with a cover being a range of 214 to 506 min, while for no cover, from 162 to 211 min. Relative humidity (RH) always presented improved preservation with a cover than with no cover, except for one case. The correlation between the thermal images and sensor temperatures was also studied.

Agricultural activity is responsible of considerable negative effects on the environment. In this context, in the last years, organic cultivation is increasing being perceived as more sustainable for the environmental. Nevertheless, this higher sustainability compared to conventional agricultural systems is debated. This applied for crops but also for livestock systems. For some of the main crops (i.e., cereals, soybean) comparative analysis were carried out but for most of the other annual and perennial crops there is a lack of information about the environmental impact related to conventional and organic cultivation In this study, the environmental impact of the conventional and organic farming systems of hazelnuts production in Viterbo province in Italy was evaluated using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. Even if originally developed for industrial processes, LCA is more and more applied also to agriculture systems to quantify the environmental impact. Primary data were collected by the main Producer Organization and elaborated considering 1 kg of hazelnuts as functional unit and a from cradle to gate approach considering the 50-years as life cycle duration of the crop. Finally, using the Recipe characterization method, 15 midpoint impact categories were evaluated. The results show how, except than for ecotoxicity related impact categories, organic cultivation practice shows higher impact (from +5% to +285%) respect to the conventional production. For ecotoxicity related impact categories, organic hazelnut production performs better (from -42% to -81%) than the conventional one because no synthetic pesticides are applied. The sensitivity analysis carried shows how yield is the main driver of the environmental results while the uncertainty analysis performed with the Monte Carlo technique shows that the to the selection of the data source, model imprecision and data variability does not significantly affect the environmental results for the evaluated impact categories., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2022. During the last two decades, new criniviruses emerged in green bean crops in the south-east of Spain. Bean yellow disorder virus (BnYDV) was first detected in 2003 and caused major economic damage in crops grown in greenhouses. It was characterized as the first crinivirus to infect a member species of the Leguminosae family. Symptoms induced during BnYDV infection include interveinal chlorosis and yellowing on leaves, and reduced fruit yield and quality. Similar symptoms, although more severe, were observed in bean crops in the same region during the fall of 2011. From that moment on, BnYDV was not detected anymore in diseased plants, but instead lettuce chlorosis virus (LCV) was associated with the diseased plants. Previously, LCV was detected only in California, USA, infecting lettuce and sugarbeets. The host range and partial genomic sequences lead to the description of the new strain, LCV-SP. The complete sequence of its genome revealed the virus as a recombinant of BnYDV and LCV, in which the latter had lost two ORFs in the RNA1 of the bipartite genome and had acquired two homologue ORFs from BnYDV. Both viruses are transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. When compared with other crinivirus pathosystems, the transmission efficiency of BnYDV to its primary host bean, is among the highest, and its persistence in the vector among the longest, up to 9 days. The host range of BnYDV s restricted to several crop species of the Leguminosae: common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), pea (Pisum sativum), tirabeque (P. sativum subsp. sativum var. macrocarpon), lentil (Lens culinaris) and faba bean (Vicia faba). LCV-SP is also able to infect green bean plants but not lettuce, its original host, probably following its recombinant nature. Symptoms and epidemiology of the bean criniviruses are compared with similar pathosystems that occur in the same region and that involve cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus and tomato chlorosis virus, infecting cucurbitaceous and solanaceous crops, respectively. Control of the criniviruses in bean crops will depend on efficient control of the vector. Physical control with greenhouses that prevent viruliferous whiteflies from gaining access to crops reduces BnYDV infection in plants and loss of production. Integrated pest management in beans would be preferred and the use of natural enemies to reduce secondary spread within greenhouses must be investigated., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Innovations in food packaging systems will help meet the evolving needs of the market, such as consumer preference for "healthy" and high-quality food products and reduction of the negative environmental impacts of food packaging. Emerging concepts of active and intelligent packaging technologies provide numerous innovative solutions for prolonging shelf-life and improving the quality and safety of food products. There are also new approaches to improving the passive characteristics of food packaging, such as mechanical strength, barrier performance, and thermal stability. The development of sustainable or green packaging has the potential to reduce the environmental impacts of food packaging through the use of edible or biodegradable materials, plant extracts, and nanomaterials. Active, intelligent, and green packaging technologies can work synergistically to yield a multipurpose food-packaging system with no negative interactions between components, and this aim can be seen as the ultimate future goal for food packaging technology. This article reviews the principles of food packaging and recent developments in different types of food packaging technologies.
