An investigation was conducted to determine whether the measurements of stereoacuity obtained with the stereoacuity reference test (TNO Test) show an agreement with a computer stereoscope video game.Methods: Thirty-two subjects (mean age 9.37± 2.00 years) with an amblyopia history were selected for a blind and randomized study of stereoacuity improvement through a new random dot game. A masked examiner measured the stereoacuity three times per subject using the TNO test (at the beginning, at the end and after 6 months of the treatment). A second masked examiner measured stereoacuity using the new computerized game after the TNO masked evaluation.Results: The Pearson’s correlation coefficient one test against the other was r2 = 0.767 and the Bland–Altman plot was r2= 0.069 (mean difference − 0.03 log sec). Using three categories: poor (840– 300 seconds of arc), coarse (480– 210 seconds of arc) and moderate–fine stereoacuity (210– 30 seconds of arc). Positive predictive values were 89.5% for moderate–fine; 72.7% for coarse; and 90.0% for poor stereoacuity. In addition, the agreement was evaluated using the Kappa coefficient (K= 0.743) with a 0.95 confidence interval and lower and upper Kappa limits were (0.628 and 0.858), respectively. Kappa coefficient and limits were still good when analyzing data before (K =0.663, 0.420 and 0.906) and after the treatment (K= 0.765, 0.632 and 0.899).Conclusion: The Computerized Stereoscopic Game test allows the measure of stereoacuity. It can be used for both the purpose of detecting stereo vision deficits or tracking stereo vision development.Keywords: amblyopia, computerized game test, gamification, stereoacuity, TNO test

The repeatability of two biometers (Lenstar-LS900 and Eyestar-900) to measure ocular parameters and intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation, and their agreement were evaluated. 134 eyes of 134 participants were measured thrice with each biometer. Axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT) and keratometry (K) were evaluated. The IOL power was calculated using different formulas. The repeatability limit (RLimit), the mean differences (MD) and the limits of agreement (LoA) were calculated. The RLimits for all parameters were higher with Lenstar compared to Eyestar. RLimits were lower than 0.50 D except for Barrett Universal II (0.54 D) and Haigis (0.51 D) formulas with the Lenstar. Mean differences were lower than 0.01 mm for AL, ACD and LT, and lower than 0.03 D for K. MD ranged from 0 to 0.02 D for all formulas except for Barrett and Hill. When dividing the sample into subgroups (short, normal and long eyes), the MDs were similar for the IOL power and were lower than 0.03 D, except for the Barrett and Hill formulas. Both biometers provide repeatable biometry and IOL power calculations. The LoA interval for the IOL power calculation was between 0.75 and 1.50D, which was similar among the subgroups., (© 2024. Background: To analyze the tolerance on distance vision of different combined residual astigmatic situations in patients implanted with a novel wavefront shaping extended depth of focus (EDoF) intraocular lens (IOL)., Methods: The study included patients implanted with the Acrysof® IQ Vivity® IOL. Uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) were measured three months after surgery, considering CDVA as the reference situation of the study. Distance VA was also measured in different refractive situations: (A) with 0.50 diopters (D) of positive (myopization) and negative (hyperopization) defocus and (B) with a residual mixed astigmatic refraction induced by adding a combination of -0.25 D spherical and 0.50 D cylindrical lenses placed in vertical (against the rule-ATR), oblique, and horizontal (with the rule-WTR) positions., Results: The study included 30 eyes of 30 patients. UDVA and CDVA were -0.04 ± 0.05 and -0.05 ± 0.05 logMAR, respectively. VA values with +0.50 D and -0.50 D of defocus were 0.01 ± 0.06 and 0.00 ± 0.04 logMAR, respectively. VA was better with distance correction ( p < 0.001) and no differences were found between the myopic and the hyperopic situations ( p =0.09). Distance VA for the ATR, oblique, and WTR astigmatic situations was 0.01 ± 0.05, 0.01 ± 0.06, and 0.01 ± 0.04 logMAR, respectively. VA was better for the reference situation ( p < 0.001) and no differences were found among the three astigmatic situations ( p =0.21)., Conclusions: Low residual defocus and mixed astigmatic errors, regardless of its orientation, seem to be tolerated by patients implanted with the studied EDoF IOL. Background: To assess the visual quality and the tolerance to low refractive errors of two trifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) with different amounts of spherical aberration (SA)., Methods: The study included patients having bilateral implantation of the AcrySof® IQ PanOptix TM (aberration-correcting) or the RayOne TM (aberration-free) Trifocal IOL. Three months after the surgery patients underwent: monocular/binocular and uncorrected/corrected distance visual acuity (VA) and binocular defocus curves. Binocular contrast sensitivity (CSF) and subjective halo perception were assessed with the best distance correction (CDVA), with a positive defocus of + 0.50D and with a negative defocus of -0.50D. Patient's satisfaction was evaluated with the Catquest9-SF questionnaire., Results: This study included 54 eyes (28 with PanOptix and 26 with RayOne) of 27 patients. Both groups achieved corrected/uncorrected and monocular/binocular distance VA values better than 0.0 logMAR (1.0 decimal) with no statistically significant differences between them (p > 0.05 for all cases). Defocus curves showed a VA of 0.1 logMAR or better between -2.5 and + 1.0D with no differences between groups (p > 0.05 at all distances). Overall CSF values remained stable under the induced residual refractions for both groups. The halo effect remained stable for the PanOptix group but increased with myopization in the RayOne group (p = 0.02). The questionnaire showed high rates of patient's satisfaction with no differences between groups., Conclusion: Both lenses showed overall good visual outcomes and offered high rates of patient's satisfaction. Moreover, in normal patients with trifocal IOLs, the combination of residual refractive errors and certain amounts of SA may increase some visual disturbances.

Purpose: To assess the effect on visual function of different residual astigmatic situations combined with 0.50 diopters (D) negative defocus at different distances in patients with trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs)., Setting: Clínica Rementería, Madrid, Spain., Design: Prospective case series., Methods: The study included patients implanted with AcrySof IQ PanOptix IOL. Visual acuity (VA) was measured at far distance (0.00 D of vergence) and at -1.5 D, -2.5 D, and -3.0 D of vergence. Residual astigmatism was induced by adding 0.50 D and 1.00 D cylindrical lenses placed at 90 degrees (against the rule [ATR]), 45 degrees (oblique), and 180 degrees (with the rule). All measurements were made with distance correction (emmetropia as the reference situation) and with a simulated residual myopia of 0.50 D., Results: The study included 61 eyes of 61 patients. Residual astigmatism of 0.50 D and 1.0 D was induced in 28 and 33 eyes, respectively. For both groups, distance and intermediate VAs were better for the reference situation (P < .001 for all cases). With 1.0 D of cylinder (without and with induced defocus), the proportion of patients who lost ≥2 lines was higher for the ATR astigmatism. For near vision, differences were smaller for all simulated situations., Conclusions: Residual astigmatism of up to 0.50 D, regardless of its orientation, seems to be tolerated at all distances. For astigmatisms of 1.0 D, distance and intermediate VAs decreased significantly, and ATR orientations showed worse results in a higher proportion of patients. Aim: To evaluate visual results and patient-perceived outcomes in patients with ocular pathologies implanted with a new extended depth-of-focus intraocular lens (IOL)., Methods: Patients with ocular pathology undergoing cataract surgery and bilaterally implanted with Vivity® IOLs were evaluated three months after surgery. The control group included patients with no ocular pathologies. Binocular defocus curves, corrected and uncorrected mono- and binocular distance visual acuity (DVA), and binocular contrast sensitivity were measured. Patients completed the Catquest-9SF questionnaire and reported on dysphotopsia and their need for spectacle-correction., Results: Twenty-five patients were included in each group. Monocular uncorrected DVA was better in the control group (-0.01 ± 0.07) compared with the study group (0.03 ± 0.08), p =0.027. There were no other statistically significant differences in DVA, with an uncorrected binocular acuity of -0.06 ± 0.06 for the control group and -0.05 ± 0.06 for the study group. Binocular defocus curves were similar for both groups and there were no differences in contrast sensitivity values. Pooling the refractive results, 96% of eyes were within ±0.50 D of target refraction. Seventy percent of patients in the control group reported no halos, compared with 40% in the study group, p =0.047. In both groups, 40% of patients reported being completely spectacle-independent, with the other 60% requiring glasses for near vision always or often. All patients reported being fairly or very satisfied with their vision., Conclusion: Initial results of visual function after Vivity implantation in patients with ocular pathologies are encouraging, with high patient satisfaction and few difficulties for daily activities., Competing Interests: Laureano A. Age-related eye diseases, including dry eye, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, represent a major global health issue based on their increasing prevalence and disabling action. Unraveling the molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases will provide novel opportunities to reduce the burden of age-related eye diseases and improve eye health, contributing to sustainable development goals achievement. The impairment of neutrophil extracellular traps formation/degradation processes seems to be one of these mechanisms. These traps formed by a meshwork of DNA and neutrophil cytosolic granule proteins may exacerbate the inflammatory response promoting chronic inflammation, a pivotal cause of age-related diseases. In this review, we describe current findings that suggest the role of neutrophils and their traps in the pathogenesis of the above-mentioned age-related eye diseases. Furthermore, we discuss why these cells and their constituents could be biomarkers and therapeutic targets for dry eye, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. We also examine the therapeutic potential of some neutrophil function modulators and provide several recommendations for future research in age-related eye diseases., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. Purpose: To objectively analyze the optical quality of the FineVision Toric intraocular lens (IOL) with two cylinder powers when different combinations of rotations and residual refractive errors are induced., Methods: This study assessed the FineVision Toric IOL with two different cylinder powers: 1.5 and 3.0 diopters (D). Three different rotation positions were considered: centered, 5° and 10° rotated. An optical bench (PMTF) was used for optical analysis. The optical quality of the IOLs was calculated by the modulation transfer function (MTF) at five different focal points (0.0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 D)., Results: The MTF averaged value of the reference situation was 38.58 and 37.74 for 1.5 and 3.0 D of cylinder, respectively. For the 1.5 D cylinder, the combination of 5° of rotation with a defocus of 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 D induced a decrease on the MTF of 12.39, 19.94, 23.43, 24.23 units, respectively. When induced rotation was 10°, the MTF decrease was 17.26, 23.40, 24.33, 24.48 units, respectively. For the 3.0 D cylinder, the combination of 5° with 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 D of defocus, induced a decrease on the MTF of 12.51, 18.97, 22.36, 22.48 units, respectively. When induced rotation was 10°, the MTF decrease was: 18.42, 21.57, 23.08, and 23.61 units, respectively., Conclusion: For both FineVision Toric IOLs there is a certain optical tolerance to rotations up to 5° or residual refractive errors up to 0.25 D. Situations over these limits and their combination would affect the visual quality of patients implanted with these trifocal toric IOLs.

Purpose: To evaluate visual function, ocular surface integrity and dry eye symptoms with an extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) design and a conventional multifocal (MF) contact lens (CL) after 15 days of wear., Methods: A crossover single mask randomised clinical trial was conducted including 30 presbyopes who used an EDOF and a conventional MF CL (Biofinity MF) for 15 days each. Defocus curves, depth-of-focus range, contrast sensitivity (CS) under photopic and mesopic conditions (with and without glare) and subjective perception of halos and glare were evaluated. The ocular surface was evaluated through non-invasive Keratograph tear breakup time (NIKBUT), averaged tear breakup time (NIKBUT-avg), tear meniscus height (TMH), bulbar and limbal redness, and conjunctival and corneal staining. Dry eye symptoms were assessed with the OSDI questionnaire., Results: No statistically significant differences were found for defocus curves or depth-of-focus between the two CLs (both p > 0.05). Subjective perception of halos and glare was not significantly different between CLs. Statistically significant differences were observed for CS under mesopic conditions for low spatial frequencies (p = 0.008). None of the CL produced significant changes in NIKBUT, NIKBUT-avg, TMH or redness. No change in conjunctival staining was observed in 76.7 % and 73.3 % of participants for EDOF and Biofinity MF, respectively. No change in corneal staining was observed in 86.7 % and 83.3 % of participants for EDOF and Biofinity MF, respectively. No changes were observed in the symptomatology measured with OSDI questionnaire (p > 0.05)., Conclusions: Both CL for presbyopia offer good visual quality, preserve the ocular surface integrity and provide the patient with similar symptomatology levels after 15 days of lens wear., (Copyright © 2020 British Contact Lens Association. Purpose: To assess the effect of decentration and tilt combined with prior myopic ablations on the optical performance of a trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) and a novel IOL with an extended depth of focus (EDOF) design., Methods: The XACT Mono-EDOF ME4 (Santen Pharmaceutical Co Ltd) and the trifocal FineVision (PhysIOL) IOLs were analyzed with and without simulated previous myopic ablations. The optical quality of the IOLs was evaluated with the PMTF optical bench (LAMBDA-X). The through-focus modulation transfer function (MTF) curves were recorded. Measurements were done for three situations: centered, 0.4 mm decentered, and 4 degrees tilted., Results: The trifocal IOL showed three peaks of vision and the EDOF IOL showed a far distance peak with intermediate addition. When decentration or tilt were induced, the trifocal IOL showed negligible changes but the EDOF IOL showed a -0.50 diopters (D) shift of the overall curve. With simulated myopic ablation, the trifocal IOL showed a -0.50 D shift of the curve. When tilt or decentration were also induced, the better optical results were found at -1.00 D. With myopic ablations, the EDOF IOL showed a -0.50 D shift of the optical quality and when decentration or tilt were then induced, negative shifts over -1.00 D were found., Conclusions: The trifocal IOL was less affected by mis-alignments. When myopic ablations were induced, both lenses decreased their optical quality and the effects of misalignments were higher. In patients who have undergone corneal myopic ablation procedures, proper alignment of the implanted IOL and obtaining effective emmetropia becomes even more critical. Background: To analyze the correlation between automated refraction and manifest refraction after implantation of a trifocal intraocular lens or its toric version., Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 105 eyes of 105 patients. Subjects were divided in two groups: 62 with trifocal (AcrySof PanOptix) and 43 with trifocal toric (AcrySof PanOptix Toric) intraocular lenses. Automated refraction was employed as starting point for obtaining the manifest refraction. Automated refraction and manifest refraction measurements were analyzed and compared using the vector analysis 3 months after the surgery., Results: In both groups, the higher differences between automated refraction and manifest refraction measurements were found for the cylinder and the spherical equivalent (M). Cylinder values for PanOptix were: -0.60 ± 0.36 D with automated refraction and -0.17 ± 38 D with manifest refraction ( p  < 0.001); for PanOptix Toric, the values were: -0.49 ± 0.31 D with automated refraction and -0.05 ± 0.21 D with manifest refraction ( p  < 0.001). M values for PanOptix were: -0.23 ± 0.31 D with automated refraction and -0.03 ± 0.16 D with manifest refraction ( p  < 0.001); for PanOptix Toric, the values were: -0.13 ± 0.40 D with automated refraction and 0.01 ± 0.12 D with manifest refraction ( p  < 0.001). For the PanOptix group, intraclass correlation coefficients were: 0.51 (sphere), 0.64 (cylinder), 0.42 (M), 0.62 (J0), and 0.37 (J45). For the PanOptix Toric group, the intraclass correlation coefficients were: 0.39 (sphere), 0.61 (cylinder), 0.39 (M), 0.53 (J0), and 0.09 (J45)., Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that patients implanted with the trifocal and the trifocal toric intraocular lens under study showed similar automated refraction results between them, with a slight trend to more negative amounts of cylinder and M. Nevertheless, clinicians should carefully confirm all parameters of the refraction with manifest refraction.

Background: The aim was to assess the impact of 5- and 10-degree rotations in the optical quality of a trifocal toric intraocular lens with different amounts of cylinder., Methods: Two Physiol Toric intraocular lenses with 1.5 and 3.0 D of cylinder were analysed in three different positions: centred, 5 and 10 degrees rotated. The optical quality of the intraocular lenses was evaluated with the PMTF optical bench through specific perpendicular targets. The analysis was performed by the through-focus modulation transfer function curves and the modulation transfer function corresponding to distance vision (0 D of vergence)., Results: For a centred situation, the through-focus modulation transfer function curves of both intraocular lenses showed the classical three peaks corresponding to the powers of the two principal meridians of the intraocular lenses. When 5 and 10 degrees of rotation were induced, the three peaks were attenuated in both cases. The case with the intraocular lens with 3.0 D of cylinder and 10 degrees of rotation showed the worst optical quality and a significant loss of trifocality. The modulation transfer function values obtained for distance vision also showed the worst optical quality for the intraocular lens with 3.0 D of cylinder and 10 degrees of rotation., Conclusion: Rotations over 5 degrees decreased the optical quality of trifocal toric intraocular lenses, being this reduction moderate from 5 to 10 degrees for low levels of cylinder (≤1.5 D). For mid-high levels of cylinder (≥3.0 D), rotations over 5 degrees cause a significant loss of optical quality at all object distances.

Background: Stereopsis is a valuable feature of human visual perception which is critically impaired in amblyopia, but can be improved through perceptual learning (PL). This article aims to determine the variables affecting the outcomes and intensity of a stereoacuity stimulation program., Methods: Re-analysis of a previous study in stereodeficient subjects with a history of amblyopia. Sixteen subjects (12 females, 4 males) aged between 7 and 14 received stereopsis stimulation through a PL program at home. A correlation analysis evaluated whether treatment intensity or percentage improvement were related to age or baseline stereoacuity measurements. Further analysis was performed to assess whether the type of amblyopia conditioned the PL treatment (Fischer Statistical Test)., Results: No significant correlation was found between age and percentage improvement (rho=-0.08, p=0.749), nor was age correlated with treatment intensity (rho=0.170, p=0.544). However, a correlation did exist between baseline stereoacuity levels and treatment intensity (rho=0.734, p=0.001). Baseline stereoacuity and percentage improvement had a negative correlation (rho=-0.748, p=0.005), while treatment intensity showed only a weak association with the type of amblyopia (p=0.064)., Conclusions: Present results suggest that perceptual learning in stereodeficient subjects is not influenced by either the subject's age or the type of amblyopia. Baseline stereoacuity, on the other hand, seems to be a predicting factor for perceptual learning outcomes. According to our study, subjects with poor basal stereoacuity needed more sessions to improve and their percentage improvement was lower. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the impact of 0.50 diopter (D) positive or negative defocus on visual function in patients implanted with trifocal and trifocal toric intraocular lenses (IOLs)., Methods: The study included patients implanted with the AcrySof IQ PanOptix IOL or the PanOptix Toric. Visual acuity (VA) at high (100%), medium (50%) and low (10%) contrast, contrast sensitivity function (CSF), and halo perception were assessed three months after surgery. Explorations were performed with corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), with a positive defocus of +0.50D (myopization) and with a negative defocus of -0.50D (hyperopization)., Results: The study included 60 eyes of 60 patients (30 eyes with PanOptix and 30 eyes with PanOptix Toric). For both groups, VA was better for all contrast settings at the CDVA situation (P<0.05 in all cases). For low spatial frequencies, no differences in CSF were found among the three refractive situations in either group. For higher frequencies, the results showed an overall trend for better CSF results for the CDVA situation. The halo effect was lower for the CDVA situation if compared to myopization and hyperopization in both the PanOptix and the PanOptix Toric groups (P<0.05 for all cases)., Conclusions: There is an impact on visual quality and halo perception in patients implanted with trifocal or trifocal toric IOLs even for low residual refractive errors., Competing Interests: The authors have no funding or conflicts of interest to disclose., (Copyright © 2020 Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists.)

Precis: Monofocal, trifocal, and trifocal toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) induce similar changes on overall retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements., Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess whether trifocal and trifocal toric IOLs affect the measurement of retinal parameters using spectral-domain OCT., Methods: This cross-over study included patients undergoing implantation of a trifocal IOL: AcrySof IQ PanOptix, a trifocal toric IOL: AcrySof IQ PanOptix Toric, and a monofocal IOL: AcrySof IQ. The monofocal group was considered as the control group. The refractive target was emmetropia in all cases. Mean average macular thickness, macular volume, and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness were measured with the Cirrus HD-OCT. All measurements were performed before and 3 months after the surgery., Results: The study analyzed 150 eyes of 150 patients (50 for each IOL group). Macular thickness and macular volume showed statistically significant differences before and after the surgery for the 3 groups (P<0.05 in all cases). RNFL thickness was found to be similar before and after the surgery in all groups (P>0.05 in all cases). Mean difference values (before and after the surgery) in the monocular, trifocal, and trifocal toric group for macular thickness, macular volume, and RNFL thickness were 4.9±7.8, 7.9±10.0, and 7.7±13.7 µm, respectively; 0.1±0.2, 0.2±0.4, and 0.2±0.3 mm3, respectively; and 0.8±5.5, 1.3±6.0, and 0.8±6.7 µm, respectively. The inflammatory process plays a crucial role in frailty syndrome, which can appear in middle age and is associated with a poor health outcome. Consequently, gerontologists recommend screening inflammatory biomarkers in middle-aged adults to detect frailty and, therefore, prevent chronic diseases and mortality. External factors could be a risk factor for frailty because they can generate and extend the inflammatory process. For these reasons, we analysed the effect of long-term contact lens wear on mRNA level of genes linked to inflammation (IL-6, NLRP3, NK1R, CD73, MUC16 and TRPV1 genes) in conjunctival cells of middle-aged individuals, by quantitative PCR. Middle-aged contact lens wearers presented a significant increase of NLRP3 and MUC16 mRNA level as well as a decrease of CD73 mRNA level, in comparison with non-contact lens wearers. Additionally, we checked for a potential correlation between these transcript levels and clinical changes of the participants' ocular surface. Unlike molecular analysis, clinical examination fails to detect inflammation in contact lens wearers. These data suggest that long-term contact lens wear could trigger an inflammatory response in middle age orchestrated by NLRP3 inflammasome and modulated by CD73 and MUC16 proteins. Purpose: To assess the effect of prior myopic ablations on the optical performance of a trifocal diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) and a novel extended depth of focus (EDOF) diffractive design., Methods: The novel XACT Mono-EDOF ME4 diffractive IOL (Santen Pharmaceutical) and the trifocal diffractive FineVision IOL (PhysIOL) were analyzed standing alone and combined with a simulated myopic corneal ablation. The optical quality of the IOLs in both situations was evaluated with the PMTF optical bench (LAMBDA-X). The through-focus modulation transfer function (MTF) curves and the MTF at three different focal points (+0.50, 0.00, and -0.50 diopters [D]) were recorded., Results: The through-focus MTF curves showed three differentiated peaks for the trifocal IOL and two overlapped peaks for the EDOF IOL. The presence of simulated myopic corneal ablations induces a -0.50 D shift on the overall through-focus curves and softens the multifocal properties of both lenses by decreasing the variations through focus of the MTF. For the analysis of the lenses standing alone, the highest MTF values were obtained for an object vergence of 0.00 D. For a simulated myopic corneal ablation, both IOLs showed better optical quality results at -0.50 D., Conclusions: The trifocal IOL provides better optical quality at far and near distances when analyzed alone. The EDOF IOL optical properties are more stable when a myopic ablation is introduced. Preoperative calculations of both lenses should consider that prior myopic corneal ablations induce a -0.50 D shift on their far peak quality. Conventional amblyopia therapy involves occlusion or penalization of the dominant eye, though these methods enhance stereoscopic visual acuity in fewer than 30% of cases. To improve these results, we propose a treatment in the form of a video game, using random-dot stimuli and perceptual learning techniques to stimulate stereoacuity. The protocol is defined for stereo-deficient patients between 7-14 years of age who have already received treatment for amblyopia and have a monocular best corrected distance visual acuity of at least 0.1 logMAR. Patients are required to complete a perceptual learning program at home using the video game. While compliance is stored automatically in the cloud, periodic optometry center visits are used to track patient evolution and adjust the game's stereoscopic demand until the smallest detectable disparity is achieved. The protocol has proved to be successful, and effectiveness is gauged in terms of a two-level gain on a random stereoacuity test (global stereoacuity or cyclopean stereoacuity reference test). Moreover, the random-dot stimuli learning transfers to medial lateral stereoscopic acuity according to a Wirt Circles test, in which success criteria is a final stereoacuity of over 140", and the attained enhancement corresponds to no less than two levels of stereoscopic acuity. Six months later, a random-dot stereoacuity test recorded no reduction in the stereoacuity that was achieved.

Purpose: To assess and compare the visual quality and subjective outcomes of a trifocal spherical intraocular lens (IOL) and its new toric version., Setting: Clínica Rementería, Madrid, Spain., Design: Prospective case series., Methods: Patients had bilateral implantation of the AcrySof IQ PanOptix spherical or toric IOL. Three months postoperatively, monocular and the binocular uncorrected and corrected distance, intermediate, and near visual acuities; binocular defocus curves; and binocular contrast sensitivity function (CSF) were assessed. Patient satisfaction was evaluated with the Catquest 9SF questionnaire., Results: The study comprised 250 eyes (166 with spherical IOL; 84 with toric IOL) of 125 patients. Both groups had good monocular visual acuity at all distances with no statistically significant differences between groups. The mean monocular uncorrected acuity in the spherical group was 0.06 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) ± 0.07 (SD), 0.20 ± 0.10 logMAR, and 0.05 ± 0.07 logMAR for far, intermediate, and near, respectively, and in the toric group, 0.07 ± 0.10 logMAR, 0.23 ± 0.20 logMAR, and 0.07 ± 0.12 logMAR, respectively. Defocus curves showed a visual acuity of 0.1 logMAR or better between -2.5 diopters (D) and +0.5 D with no differences between groups. The CSF values were within normal ranges with both IOLs. The questionnaire showed high rates of patient satisfaction with no differences between groups., Conclusions: The visual outcomes with the 2 IOLs were similar. With optimum implantation and alignment, the trifocal toric IOL seems to provide visual quality and patient satisfaction that is equivalent to that with the nontoric version with the same platform., (Copyright © 2019 ASCRS and ESCRS. Purpose: To compare and analyze the accuracy of the refractive outcomes obtained in intraocular lens power calculation using the classical calculation method with mean keratometry (K) and the calculation method with both K meridians presented in this article., Methods: A total of 62 eyes of 62 subjects who were undergoing cataract surgery were included in this study. Optical biometry was performed using mean K and Haigis formula for classical intraocular lens calculation methods to achieve intraocular lens power; 4 weeks after surgery, prior to medical discharge, subjective refraction was made. Alternatively, intraocular lens power was calculated with bicylindric method using both keratometry readings, obtaining spherocylindrical refractive expected outcomes. Finally, results obtained with intraocular lens calculation methods, bicylindric method, and Haigis formula were compared., Results: Spherical equivalent calculated by classical intraocular lens calculation methods using Haigis formula (H-SE) was -0.027 ± 0.115 D and using bicylindric method (B-SE) was -0.080 ± 0.222 D. Achieved spherical equivalent obtained 4 weeks after surgery (A-SE) was -0.144 ± 0.268 D. Difference between H-SE and A-SE was -0.117 D (p = 0.002). Difference between B-SE and A-SE was not significant (-0.054 D, p = 0.109). Analysis in refraction groups showed a positive correlation between A-SE confronted to B-SE and H-SE (r = 0.313; p = 0.013 and r = 0.562; p < 0.001, respectively). This indicated a reliability in ametropic group prediction of 0.767 in H-SE and 0.843 in B-SE., Conclusion: Intraocular lens calculation with bicylindric method could be more accurate and had more reliability than classical intraocular lens calculation method. Bicylindric method adds astigmatism control and provides a reliable expected spherocylindrical refraction.

Purpose: To compare and analyze the interchangeability of three measuring systems, each based on a different technique, for central corneal thickness (CCT) analysis., Methods: CCT measurements were measured using optical coherence tomography (OCT), non-contact specular microscopy (NCSM), and ultrasonic pachymetry (USP) in 60 eyes of 60 healthy patients with a mean age of 66.5±15.0 years and a mean spherical equivalent of 0.43±1.14 D. Analysis of variations in measurement concordance and correlation among the three different methods were performed. Comparison of CCT measurements were done using Bland-Altman plots (with bias and 95% confidence intervals), intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and paired t-student analysis., Results: Mean CCT values were: 549.20±26.91μm for USP (range 503-618μm), 514.20±27.49μm for NCSM (range 456-586μm) and 542.80±25.56μm for OCT (range 486-605μm). CCT values obtained with NCMS were significantly lower than those obtained with OCT and USP methods. NCMS CCT value was 36.08±10.72μm lower than USP value (p<0.05), and NCMS CCT value was 7.88±8.86μm lower than OCT value (p<0.05). ICC between USP-NCSM pair was 0.488 and 0.909 between USP-OCT pair., Conclusion: OCT and UPS offered highly comparable results, whereas NCSM offered lower mean CCT values compared to the other two methods. Significance: Currently, treatments for amblyopia are occlusion or penalization of the stronger fellow eye. Fewer than 30% of patients improve stereoacuity using these treatments. In order to improve these outcomes, this group proposes a treatment to stimulate the stereoacuity through perceptual learning in a game format for use at home., Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine whether perceptual learning with random dot stimuli (RDS) in the form of a computer video game improves stereopsis in patients with a history of amblyopia., Methods: Thirty-two stereo-deficient patients (7 to 14 years old) previously treated for amblyopia participated in a prospective, randomized, double-blind study. Participants followed a perceptual learning program at home using RDS software. In the experimental group, the demand of stereopsis was increased, until reaching the lowest detectable disparity. In the comparison group, the stimulation interval was a constant (840 to 750"). Stereoacuity was evaluated with the Randot Preschool Stereoacuity Test (RPST) and the Wirt Circles., Results: Median compliance was 100% (interquartile range [IQR] = 78.50 to 100). Log10 stereoacuity outcomes were significantly different between groups (RPST, P = .041; Wirt Circles Test, P = .009). Median stereoacuity improvement with RPST was 50% (IQR = 0.00 to 75%) and 0% (IQR = 0.00 to 7.5%), respectively, for experimental and comparison groups (P = .008). Wirt Circles improvement was 46.42% (IQR = 6.25 to 73.75%) and 0% (IQR = 0.00 to 57.50%), respectively, for experimental and comparison groups (P = .089). Stereoacuity improvement was not different between groups when success was considered a 70% gain in RPST (P = .113); it was statistically different when success was considered a gain of two levels on Wirt Circles and stereoacuity 140" or less (P = .023). Stereoacuity remained stable after 6 months when measured with RPST, whereas it worsened in two subjects when measured with Wirt Circles., Conclusions: Direct stimulation of stereopsis at home using RDS in a game environment improves the stereoacuity in stereo-deficient subjects with a history of amblyopia.

Background: To evaluate the impact on the ocular surface of a daily disposable hydrogel contact lens with high water content compared with two silicone hydrogel daily disposable lenses of lower water content., Methods: The hydrogel lens assessed was made from nesofilcon A and the silicone hydrogel lenses were made of delefilcon A and stenfilcon A. Contact lens thickness was measured to assess material stability during daily wear, and ocular surface parameters such as tear film osmolarity, tear meniscus area and central corneal thickness were also assessed. Optical quality was analysed for all cases by means of wavefront aberrometry., Results: The nesofilcon A was shown to be the thinnest lens (p < 0.001), while no differences in lens thickness were found between the two silicone hydrogel lenses (p = 0.495). No significant differences were found in tear film osmolarity, tear meniscus area, central corneal thickness or corneal aberrations, either as a function of the lens measured or time of use (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: In spite of having the thinnest lens and the highest water content, the hydrogel does not significantly impact on tear film and corneal swelling after one day of use in first-time wearers., (© 2017 Optometry Australia.)

Background: To compare the in vitro optical quality of two new trifocal intraocular lenses at different focal points as a function of pupil size., Methods: Two intraocular lenses having different design approaches were evaluated: the AT LISA tri 839MP with a trifocal diffractive design, and the FineVision, which combines two distinct apodized bifocal diffractive profiles resulting in three foci. A PMTF optical bench was used to assess the intraocular lenses' performance, and as optical quality metrics, the through-focus modulation transfer function was selected; that is, it was measured at 10 focal points and for four different apertures (2.0, 3.0, 3.75 and 4.5 mm)., Results: For both lenses, the through-focus curve showed three peaks, corresponding to far, intermediate and near focal point. At the 0.0 D focal point, the FineVision yielded better results for larger pupils. At the -1.5 D focal point, both lenses performed worse for larger pupils. At the -3.0 D, the FineVision provided better results for all apertures. However, at the -3.5 D focal point, it was the AT LISA tri 839MP that outperformed the FineVision for larger pupils., Conclusions: The two trifocal intraocular lenses under analysis have modulation transfer function peaks that correspond to the far, intermediate and near focal points. Purpose: To compare the in vitro optical quality at different focal points of two new bifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) and one new trifocal IOL., Methods: The AcrySof ReSTOR SV25T0 (+2.5 diopter [D] add) and the AcrySof ReSTOR SN6AD1 (+3.0 D add) with two main foci (Alcon Laboratories, Fort Worth, TX) and the AT LISA tri 839MP with three main foci (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA) were evaluated. The optical quality of the IOLs was measured with the PMTF optical bench (LAMBDA-X, Nivelles, Belgium). The optical quality of the IOLs was quantified by the modulation transfer function (MTF) at five different focal points (0.0, -1.5, -2.0, -2.5, and -3.0 D) and for 3.0- and 4.5-mm apertures. The through-focus MTF of the IOLs was also recorded., Results: For the 0.0 D focal point, the AcrySof ReSTOR (+2.5 D add) obtained the highest MTF values for all apertures. For the -2.5 D focal point, the AcrySof ReSTOR (+3.0 D add) showed the highest MTF values for 3.0 mm. For the -3.0 D focal point at 3.0- and 4.5-mm aperture, the best values were obtained with the AcrySof ReSTOR (+3.0 D add) and the AT LISA, respectively. For the -1.5 D focal point, the trifocal IOL provided better values. For the -2.0 D focal point, all IOLs provided comparable results. The through-focus MTF curves showed three and two peaks for the trifocal and bifocal IOLs, respectively., Conclusions: The trifocal IOL provides a better optical quality at the -1.5 D focal point. Background: The aim of this study was to analyse the visual quality of the AcrySof IQ SN60WF(®) intraocular lens (IOL) when combined with different corneal profiles., Methods: Ten eyes of 10 participants with no prior history of refractive or cataract surgery were evaluated. An adaptive optics visual simulator was used to simulate the wavefront aberration pattern of an aspheric aberration-correcting IOL (AcrySof IQ SN60WF(®)). Normal corneas (group A), low and high myopic corneal ablations (groups B and C, respectively) and low and high hyperopic corneal ablations (groups D and E, respectively) were also simulated. Monocular distance visual acuities at 100, 50 and 10 per cent of contrast were measured., Results: At 100, 50 and 10 per cent contrast, no differences were found between groups A and B (p > 0.06 for all contrasts). Group A obtained better values than groups C, D and E for all contrasts (p = 0.031, p = 0.038, p = 0.032 at 100, 50 and 10 per cent of contrast, respectively). At the same time, group B obtained better values than groups C, D and E (p = 0.041, p = 0.042, p = 0.036 at 100, 50 and 10 per cent of contrast, respectively). Within the five groups, the worst results were always obtained for group E (p = 0.017, p = 0.021 and p = 0.025 at 100, 50 and 10 per cent of contrast, respectively)., Conclusions: The results suggest that the aspheric aberration-correcting IOL studied provides comparable results, when it is combined with normal corneas and with corneas with simulated low myopic ablations. When negative amounts of residual spherical aberration after cataract surgery are expected to be achieved, IOLs with more positive spherical aberration should be considered., (© 2013 The Authors. Purpose: To compare the in vitro optical quality of multifocal apodized intraocular lenses (IOLs) at different focal points., Setting: University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain., Design: Experimental study., Methods: The Acrysof Restor +3.0 diopter (D) multifocal IOL with 2 main foci (bifocal IOL) and the Finevision multifocal IOL with 3 main foci (trifocal IOL) were evaluated. The optical quality was quantified using the modulation transfer function (MTF) at 7 focal points and for 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm apertures. The through-focus MTF at 10 focal points of the IOLs was also recorded., Results: For the 0.0 D and -2.5 D focal points, the bifocal IOL showed the highest MTF values for pupil sizes as well as for the -3.0 D focal point for a 3.0 mm aperture. For the -1.5 D and -3.5 D focal points, the trifocal IOL provided better MTF values, whereas for -2.0 D and -4.0 D both IOLs provided comparable results for both apertures. The through-focus MTF curves showed 3 and 2 peaks for the trifocal IOL and the bifocal IOL, respectively. With the bifocal IOL, better peak values were obtained at the 0.0 D, -2.0 D, -2.5 D, and -3.0 D focal points, while the trifocal IOL yielded better peak values at the -1.5 D and -3.5 D focal points., Conclusion: The bifocal IOL is likely to provide a greater range of vision from distance to near than the trifocal IOL; however, at the intermediate focal point (-1.5 D), the trifocal IOL will probably yield better optical quality., Financial Disclosure: No author has a financial or proprietary interest in any material or method mentioned., (Copyright © 2013 ASCRS and ESCRS. Background: Simultaneous vision multifocal contact lenses are widely used to alleviate the symptoms of presbyopia. These contact lenses create simultaneous retinal images due to the incoming light distribution being divided into two or more focuses. Our aim was to evaluate whether the multizone refractive multifocal contact lenses affect the measurements of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and macular thickness using optical coherence tomography (OCT)., Methods: In this cross-over study, 30 eyes of 30 subjects with a mean age of 50.42 ± 7.82 years were fitted with multizone refractive multifocal contact lenses. Using the RNFL Thickness Analysis mode of the Cirrus HD (Carl Zeiss, Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA) OCT, the average, superior, nasal, inferior, temporal and 12 o'clock-hour retinal nerve fibre layer thicknesses were obtained. In Macular Thickness Analysis mode of Cirrus HD OCT, the average cube thickness, macular cube volume, central subfield thickness, inner and outer macular thickness (superior, inferior, nasal and temporal area) were obtained. Measurements were performed with and without contact lenses., Results: Statistically significant differences were not found in RNFL thickness at any of the studied areas and for 12 o'clock-hour sectors analysed (p > 0.07). The mean macular volume was 9.86 ± 0.30 mm(3) and 9.87 ± 0.27 mm(3) with and without multifocal contact lenses, respectively (p = 0.38). There were no statistically significant differences in average macular thickness or macular thickness of areas analysed between the measurements with and without multifocal contact lenses (p > 0.09). The signal strength was higher than seven for all scans, and differences were not found in the mean of signal strength between the measurements with and without contact lenses., Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the assessed multizone refractive multifocal contact lens does not affect the retinal nerve fibre layer and macular thickness measurements using Cirrus HD OCT., (© 2012 The Authors. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate ocular aberration changes through different simultaneous vision multifocal contact lenses (CLs)., Methods: Eighteen young-adult subjects with a mean age of 29.8±2.11 years took part. Changes in accommodative response, spherical aberration (C(4)(0)), horizontal coma (C(3)(1)), vertical coma (C(3)(-1)), and root mean square (RMS) of higher-order aberrations (HOAs, third to sixth orders) were evaluated. Measurements were obtained with a distance-single vision CL and 2 aspheric multifocal CLs of simultaneous focus center-near design (PureVision Low Add and PureVision High Add) for 2 accommodative stimuli (-2.50 and -4.00 D). All measurements were performed monocularly with a Hartmann-Shack aberrometer (IRX-3; Imagine Eyes, Orsay, France)., Results: No statistically significant differences were found in accommodative responses to -2.50- and -4.00-D stimuli between the single vision CL and the 2 multifocal CLs. Spherical aberration was found to decrease and become more negative with accommodation for both stimuli with all three CLs. Horizontal coma decreased significantly with accommodation (-2.5- and -4.00-D stimuli) for the distance-single vision CLs (P=0.002 and P=0.003). No differences were found in vertical coma Zernike coefficients. The RMS of HOAs was found to decrease only with the single vision CLs for both stimuli (P<0.01)., Conclusions: Data obtained in this study suggest that in young subjects, the multifocal CLs studied do not induce large changes in accommodative response compared with the distance-single vision CLs. Spherical aberration reduced significantly with accommodation.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the creation of 2 foci (distance and near) provided by multizone refractive multifocal contact lenses (CLs) for presbyopia correction affects the measurements on Humphreys 24-2 Swedish interactive threshold algorithm (SITA) standard automated perimetry (SAP)., Methods: In this crossover study, 30 subjects were fitted in random order with either a multifocal CL or a monofocal CL. After 1 month, a Humphrey 24-2 SITA standard strategy was performed. The visual field global indices (the mean deviation [MD] and pattern standard deviation [PSD]), reliability indices, test duration, and number of depressed points deviating at P<5%, P<2%, P<1%, and P<0.5% on pattern deviation probability plots were determined and compared between multifocal and monofocal CLs., Results: Thirty eyes of 30 subjects were included in this study. There were no statistically significant differences in reliability indices or test duration. There was a statistically significant reduction in the MD with the multifocal CL compared with monfocal CL (P=0.001). Differences were not found in PSD nor in the number of depressed points deviating at P<5%, P<2%, P<1%, and P<0.5% in the pattern deviation probability maps studied., Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the multizone refractive lens produces a generalized depression in threshold sensitivity as measured by the Humphreys 24-2 SITA SAP.

Aims: To evaluate the visual performance of an aberration-free intraocular lens (IOL) in patients with different corneal profiles using adaptive optics visual simulation., Methods: A crx1 adaptive optics visual simulator was used to simulate the aberration pattern of an aberration-free IOL combined with five corneal profiles: virgin corneas and corneas with low and high myopic ablations and low and high hyperopic ablations. Ten eyes of 10 subjects were evaluated, and monocular distance visual acuity (VA) at 100%, 50% and 10% of contrast was measured., Results: At 100% of contrast, no differences were found in VA values among virgin corneas, low and high myopic ablations and low hyperopic ablation groups (p=0.06). All these groups achieved better results than the high hyperopic ablation group (p<0.001). At 50% and 10%, the best values of VA were obtained for the virgin corneas and for the low myopic and low hyperopic ablation groups (p>0.1, for both levels of contrast). Significant differences were found between these three corneal profiles and the other two corneal profiles (p<0.002 for high myopic and p<0.001 for high hyperopic, for both levels of contrasts)., Conclusions: The results suggest that the aberration-free IOL design gives an excellent visual performance for a range of corneal spherical aberrations that could correspond to patients with virgin corneas and patients in which the corneal spherical aberration has been slightly modified by a hyperopic or myopic laser ablation.

Purpose: To analyze visual quality differences between intraocular lenses (IOLs) and assess the impact of IOL decentration and tilt on visual quality., Setting: University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain., Design: Cohort study., Methods: The crx1 adaptive optics visual simulator was used to simulate the wavefront aberration pattern of 2 commercially available aspheric aberration-correcting IOLs (Acrysof IQ SN60WF and Tecnis ZA9003) and 2 spherical IOLs (Akreos Adapt and Triplato) in 5 situations: centered, decentered 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm, and tilted 2 degrees and 4 degrees. Monocular distance visual acuity at 100%, 50%, and 10% contrast and the depth of focus were measured., Results: Ten eyes of 10 patients were evaluated. When the IOLs were centered, there were no differences in visual acuity between the 4 IOLs at any contrast. The aberration-correcting IOLs were more sensitive to tilt and decentration than the spherical IOLs; Tecnis ZA9003 IOL was the most sensitive to decentration and the Acrysof IQ SN60WF IOL was the most sensitive to tilt. Higher residual spherical aberration slightly improved depth of focus and the tolerance to defocus., Conclusions: The results in this study suggest that the aspheric aberration-correcting and spherical IOLs provided comparable visual quality when centered in eyes in which the corneal higher-order aberrations are those of the average of the human cornea. Tilt and decentration of the IOLs had an impact on visual quality, with aberration-correcting IOLs having a greater effect than the spherical IOLs., (Copyright © 2012 ASCRS and ESCRS. Purpose: To evaluate the depth of focus with monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) in patients with different corneal profiles using adaptive optics (AO) visual simulation., Methods: An AO visual simulator (crx1, Imagine Eyes) was used to simulate the aberration pattern of three monofocal IOLs (Acrysof IQ SN60WF [Alcon Laboratories Inc]; Akreos Adapt AO [Bausch & Lomb]; and Triplato [AJL Ophthalmic]) of different optic designs. Five groups were considered: patients without any corneal refractive surgery (normal cornea group) and with prior low and high myopic and hyperopic ablations (low myopic ablation, high myopic ablation, low hyperopic ablation, and high hyperopic ablation groups). Defocus curves for all situations were measured, with the target being moved from -5.00 to +2.50 diopters (D) in 0.25-D steps, and visual acuity was measured at all vergences., Results: Ten eyes from 10 patients were evaluated. The higher residual spherical aberration (SA) for all IOLs was obtained for the high myopic ablation group and the most negative residual SA was obtained for the high hyperopic ablation group. The best compromise between distance visual and depth of focus for the normal cornea, low myopic ablation, and high myopic ablation groups was obtained with the aspheric designs, whereas the best results for the low hyperopic and high hyperopic ablation groups were obtained with the spherical IOL., Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the better compromise between distance visual acuity and depth of focus with the three IOLs and the different corneal profiles relies on a certain amount of positive SA. Above a certain limit of residual SA (positive or negative), visual acuity decreases at all vergences, worsening the depth of focus., (Copyright 2012, SLACK Incorporated.)

Purpose: To evaluate visual quality differences among intraocular lenses (IOLs) in patients with previous hyperopic laser ablations and to assess the impact of decentration and tilt of IOLs on visual quality., Methods: An adaptive optics visual simulator was used to simulate the wavefront aberration pattern of one aberration-correcting IOL (AcrySof IQ SN60WF, Alcon Laboratories Inc) and two spherical IOLs with different amounts of positive spherical aberration (Akreos Adapt [Bausch & Lomb] and Triplato [AJL Ophthalmic]) in five situations-centered, 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm of decentration, and 2° and 4° of tilt-in two groups: simulated low hyperopic laser corneal ablation (low hyperopia group) and high hyperopic laser corneal ablation (high hyperopia group). Monocular distance visual acuity at 100%, 50%, and 10% contrast were measured., Results: Ten eyes were evaluated. When the IOLs were centered, all IOLs obtained comparable results for the low hyperopia group, whereas for the high hyperopia group, the Akreos Adapt and AcrySof IQ SN60WF showed better visual acuity than the Triplato. When the IOLs were misaligned, for the low hyperopia group, the best visual acuity results were obtained with the Akreos Adapt and the most critical situation was at 0.4 mm of decentration. For the high hyperopia group, misalignments decreased visual acuity in a higher amount than for the low hyperopia group., Conclusions: Our results suggest that the IOLs studied offer good visual quality when they are centered for both groups. However, tilt and decentration of monofocal IOLs have an impact on visual function in patients with hyperopic ablations. Purpose: To evaluate visual quality differences between intraocular lenses (IOLs) in patients with previous myopic laser ablations and assess the impact of IOL decentration and tilt on visual quality., Setting: University of Valencia, Burjassot, Spain., Design: Cohort study., Methods: An adaptive optics visual simulator was used to simulate the wavefront aberration pattern of 1 aberration-correcting IOL (Acrysof IQ SN60WF), 1 aberration-free IOL (Akreos Adapt AO), and 1 spherical IOL (Triplato) under 5 IOL situations: centered, 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm decentered, and 2 degrees and 4 degrees tilted in eyes with simulated low or high myopic laser corneal ablations. Monocular distance visual acuity at 100%, 50%, and 10% contrast were measured., Results: Ten eyes of 10 patients were evaluated. When the IOLs were centered, the aberration-correcting IOL provided the best visual quality results in both groups. When the IOLs were misaligned, there was a decrease of visual quality with all simulated IOLs except the aberration-free IOL in the high myopia group. In the misaligned situations, all simulated IOLs obtained comparable visual quality results in both groups., Conclusions: The results suggest that in patients with previous myopic laser corneal ablation, aberration-correcting IOLs should be implanted.
