- Abstract
We consider the phase shift in the gravitational wave signal induced by fast oscillations of scalar dark matter surrounding binary systems, which could be probed by the future experiments LISA and DECIGO. This effect depends on the local matter density and the mass of the dark matter particle. We compare it to the phase shift due to a standard dynamical friction term, which should generically be present. We find that the effect associated with the oscillations only dominates over the dynamical friction for dark matter masses below 10-21 eV, with masses below 10-23 eV implying cloud sizes that are too large to be realistic. Moreover, for masses of the order of 10-21 eV, LISA and DECIGO would only detect this effect for dark matter densities greater than that in the solar system by a factor 105 or 104 respectively. We conclude that this signal can be ignored for most dark matter scenarios unless very dense clouds of very light dark matter are created early in the Universe at a redshift z similar to 104., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (España), European Commission, Université Paris-Saclay, P2IO Laboratory of Excellence, Agence Nationale de la Recherche (France), Science and Technology Facilities Council (UK), Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, Instituto de Física de Partículas y del Cosmos (IPARCOS), TRUE, pub, CA21106, CA21136, ANR-11-IDEX-0003-01, ANR-10-LABX-0038, ST/ T000732/1.

2023 Descuento SCOAP, We provide a reinterpretation of the quantum vacuum ambiguities that one encounters when studying particle creation phenomena due to an external and time-dependent agent. We propose a measurement-motivated understanding: Each way of measuring the number of created particles selects a particular vacuum. This point of view gives a clear and physical meaning to the time evolution of the number of particles produced by the agent as the counts in a specific detector and, at the same time, relates commonly used quantization prescriptions to particular measurement setups., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (España), Agencia Estatal de Investigación (España), Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER), European Commission, European Cooperation in Science and Technology, Ministerio de Universidades (España), Centro de Excelencia Severo Ochoa (España), Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, Instituto de Física de Partículas y del Cosmos (IPARCOS), TRUE, pub, Descuento UCM

Loop corrections trigger a spontaneous symmetry breaking and the appearance of a non-trivial vacuum. We first review the basic example of the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, scalar Quantum Electrodynamics, in a perturbative regime where the scalar particle becomes massive through photon loops. We then present the main results of this article, what we name the gravitational Coleman-Weinberg mechanism: we analyse the same effect in a gravitational theory without explicit energy scales at tree-level. Finally, we also study the mechanism for two scalar fields in the mentioned gravitational theory. We will derive the gravitational Coleman-Weinberg potentials, analyse the parameter space where we have a symmetry breaking, and obtain the value of the corresponding scalar masses., Unión Europea. ©2003 The American Physical Society, We consider a general brane-world model parametrized by the brane tension scale f and the branon mass M. For a low tension compared to the fundamental gravitational scale, we calculate the relic branon abundance and its contribution to the cosmological dark matter. We compare this result with the current observational limits on the total and hot dark matter energy densities and derive the corresponding bounds on f and M. Using the nucleosynthesis bounds on the number of relativistic species, we also set a limit on the number of light branons in terms of the brane tension. Finally, we estimate the bounds coming from the energy loss rate in supernovae explosions due to massive branon emission., Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

We define a conserved renormalized energy-momentum tensor by means of a comoving cutoff regularization. Using exact solutions for de Sitter space-time, we show that in a certain range of mass and renormalization scales there is a contribution to the vacuum energy density that scales as nonrelativistic matter and that such a contribution becomes dominant at late times. By means of the WKB approximation, we find that these results can be extended to arbitrary Robertson-Walker geometries. We study the range of parameters in which the vacuum energy density would be compatible with current limits on dark matter abundance. Finally, by calculating the vacuum energy in a perturbed Robertson-Walker background, we obtain the speed of sound of density perturbations and show that the vacuum energy density contrast can grow on sub-Hubble scales as in standard cold dark matter scenarios., MICINN (Spain), Consolider-Ingenio MULTIDARK, CSD2009- 00064, UAM+CSIC Campus of International Excellence (Spain), Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

In particular, we show that these data are well fitted as the secondary gamma-rays photons generated from dark matter annihilating into Standard Model particles in combination with a simple power law background. We present explicit analyses for annihilation in a single standard model particle-antiparticle pair. In this case, the best fits are obtained for the u (u) over bar and d (d) over bar quark channels and for the W+W- and ZZ gauge bosons, with background spectral index compatible with the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) data from the same region. The fits return a heavy WIMP, with a mass above similar to 10 TeV, but well below the unitarity limit for thermal relic annihilation., MICINN, Spain, Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

This CS has been interpreted as the result of the presence of a collapsing texture, perhaps coming from some early universe grand unified theory (GUT) phase transition. In this work we propose an alternative explanation based on a completely different kind of texture which appears in a natural way in a broad class of brane-world models. This type of texture, known as a brane-skyrmion, can be understood as a hole in the brane which makes it possible to pass through them along the extra-dimensional space. The typical scales needed for the proposed brane-skyrmions to correctly describe the observed CS can be as low as the electroweak scale., DGICYT (Spain), UCM-Santander, DOE, Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

We will review the main phenomenology associated with such particles. Distinctive disformal signatures could be measured at colliders and with astrophysical observations. The phenomeno-logical relevance of the disformal coupling demands the introduction of a set of symmetries, which may ensure the stability of these new degrees of freedom. In such a case, they constitute natural dark matter candidates since they are generally massive and weakly coupled. We will illustrate these ideas by paying particular attention to the branon case, since these questions arise naturally in braneworld models with low tension, where they were first discussed., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN), Actividad Investigadora CONSOLIDER-INGENIO (MICINN), Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO), Proyecto Método de Multimensajeros para la Detección de la Materia Oscura (MultiDark), Depto. de Física de Materiales, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

In this work we show that massive brane fluctuations (branons) in large extra-dimensions models can provide an economical way to deal with these two issues. This is so because the low-energy branon physics depends effectively on essentially only three parameters. Next collider experiments, such as LHC or ILC, will be sensitive to branon phenomenology in the natural parameter region where the theory is able to account for the two effects., DGICYT (Spain), NSF grant, Fulbright-MEC (Spain), Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

We calculate the present abundances for both hot (warm) and cold branons in terms of the branon mass M and the tension scale f. A. d. l. C.-D. also acknowledges the University Research Council, the National Research Foundation (South Africa), and Universidad Complutense de Madrid., Branons are new degrees of freedom that appear in flexible brane-world models corresponding to brane fluctuations. These new fields can behave as standard weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with a significant associated thermal relic density. We analyze the present constraints from their spontaneous annihilations into photons for Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET), Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), and Major Atmospheric Gamma-Ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes, and the prospects for detection in future Cherenkov telescopes. In particular, we focus on possible signals coming from the Galactic center and different dwarf spheroidals, such as Draco, Sagittarius, Canis Major and SEGUE 1. We conclude that for those targets, present observations are below the sensitivity limits for branon detection by assuming standard dark matter distributions and no additional boost factors. However, future experiments such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) could be able to detect gamma-ray photons coming from the annihilation of branons with masses higher than 150 GeV., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion, Spain, Consolider-Ingenio Multimessenger Approach for Dark Matter Detection (MULTIDARK), Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

Starting from very general principles, it is possible to obtain an effective action for the relevant degrees of freedom at low energies (branons). Using the cross sections for high-energy processes involving branons, we set bounds on the different parameters appearing in these models. We also show that branons provide a WIMP candidate for dark matter in a natural way. We consider cosmological constraints on its thermal and non-thermal relic abundances. We derive direct detection limits and compare those limits with the preferred parameter region in the case in which the EGRET excess in the diffuse galactic gamma rays is due to dark matter annihilation. In particular we study the case of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker as well as more general Bianchi Type I spacetimes. The fulfillment of the Focusing Theorem is mandatory in small scales since it accounts for the attractive character of gravity. However, the Focusing Theorem is not satisfied at cosmological scales due to the measured negative deceleration parameter. The study of the conditions needed for congruences convergence is not only relevant at the fundamental level but also to derive the viability conditions to be imposed on extended theories of gravity describing the different expansion regimes of the universe. This fact is usually interpreted as a manifestation of the attractive character of gravity. Nevertheless, a positive contribution to Raychaudhuri equation from space-time geometry should occur since this is the case in an accelerated expanding Robertson-Walker model for congruences followed by fundamental observers. Modified gravity theories provide the possibility of a positive contribution although the standard energy conditions are assumed. We address this important issue in the context of f(R) theories, deriving explicit upper bounds for the contribution of space-time geometry to the Raychaudhuri equation. Then, we examine the parameter constraints for some paradigmatic f(R) models in order to ensure a positive contribution to this equation. Furthermore, we consider the implications of these upper bounds in the equivalent formulation of f(R) theories as a Brans-Dicke model., MINECO (Spain), Consolider-Ingenio MULTIDARK, Marie Curie - Beatriu de Pinos, Generalitat de Catalunya, ACGC, University of Cape Town, Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

This analysis shares analogies with the formation of large-scale structures in the early Universe and with the formation of stars in a molecular cloud experiencing gravitational collapse. A.d.l.C.D. also acknowledges the hospitality of FAE-UAB in the final stages of preparation of this manuscript., We present a study of the Galactic Center region as a possible source of both secondary gamma-ray and neutrino fluxes from annihilating dark matter. We have studied the gamma-ray flux observed by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) from the J1745-290 Galactic Center source. The data are well fitted as annihilating dark matter in combination with an astrophysical background. The analysis was performed by means of simulated gamma spectra produced by Monte Carlo event generators packages. We analyze the differences in the spectra obtained by the various Monte Carlo codes developed so far in particle physics. We show that, within some uncertainty, the HESS data can be fitted as a signal from a heavy dark matter density distribution peaked at the Galactic Center, with a power-law for the background with a spectral index which is compatible with the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) data from the same region. If this kind of dark matter distribution generates the gamma-ray flux observed by HESS, we also expect to observe a neutrino flux. We show prospective results for the observation of secondary neutrinos with the Astronomy with a Neutrino Telescope and Abyss environmental RESearch project (ANTARES), Ice Cube Neutrino Observatory (Ice Cube) and the Cubic Kilometer Neutrino Telescope (KM3NeT). Calculations are performed in the Einstein frame with the cosmological background described as Lambda-cold dark matter (Lambda CDM) and supplemented by a Jordan-Fierz-Brans-Dicke field. By using a completely general procedure valid for all scalar-tensor theories, we obtain the exact fourth-order differential equation for the density contrast evolution in modes of arbitrary size. In the case of sub-Hubble modes, the expression reduces to a simpler but still fourth-order equation that is then compared with the standard (quasistatic) approximation. The presence of the supermassive Sagittarius A* black hole, a high dark matter density and an even higher baryonic density are able to produce very energetic processes. Indeed, high energetic gamma-rays have been observed by different telescopes, although their origin is not clear. In this work, we estimate the possible antiproton flux component associated with this signal. The expected secondary astrophysical antiproton background already saturates the observed data. It implies that any other important astrophysical source leads to an inconsistent excess. We estimate the sensitivity of PAMELA to this new primary antiproton source, which depends on the diffusion model and its spectral features. In particular, we consider antiproton spectra described by a power-law, a monochromatic signal and a Standard Model particle-antiparticle channel production. This latter spectrum is typical in the production from annihilating or decaying dark matter. We pay particular attention to the case of a heavy dark matter candidate, which could be associated with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) data observed from the J1745-290 source., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN), España, Consolider-Ingenio MULTIDARK, U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (EE.UU), Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO), España, Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

We find a mechanical analogy in which the system behaves as a particle moving in three dimensions under the action of a central potential. In the case of bounded and rapid evolution compared to the rate of expansion, we show-by making use of the virial theorem-that for an arbitrary potential and polarization pattern, the average energy-momentum tensor is always diagonal and isotropic despite the intrinsic anisotropic evolution of the vector field. For simple power law potentials of the form V = lambda(A(mu)A(mu))(n), the average equation of state is found to be w = (n - 1)/(n + 1). This implies that vector coherent oscillations could act as natural dark matter or dark energy candidates. Finally, we show that under very general conditions, the average energy-momentum tensor of a rapidly evolving bounded vector field in any background geometry is always isotropic and has the perfect fluid form for any locally inertial observer., MICINN (Spain), Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

We make use of the Raychaudhuri equation which describes the evolution of the expansion rate for a congruence of timelike or null geodesics. In particular, we focus on the space-time geometry contribution to this equation. By straightforward calculation from the metric of a Robertson-Walker cosmological model, it follows that in an accelerated expanding Universe the space-time contribution to the Raychaudhuri equation is positive for the fundamental congruence, favoring a non-focusing of the congruence of geodesics. However, the accelerated expansion of the present Universe does not imply a tendency of the fundamental congruence to diverge. It is shown that this is in fact the case for certain congruences of timelike geodesics without vorticity. Therefore, the focusing of geodesics remains feasible in an accelerated expanding Universe. Furthermore, a negative contribution to the Raychaudhuri equation from space-time geometry which is usually interpreted as the manifestation of the attractive character of gravity is restored in an accelerated expanding Robertson-Walker space-time at high speeds., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN), España, Programa Consolider-Ingenio (Proyecto MULTIDARK), National Research Foundation (NRF), Sudáfrica, URC, Sudáfrica, Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

Such theories allow to reformulate most of the fundamental problems of physics from a completely different point of view. In this essay, we concentrate on the brane fluctuations which are present in brane-worlds, and how such oscillations of the own space-time geometry along curved extra dimensions can help to resolve the Universe missing mass problem. The energy scales involved in these models are low compared to the Planck scale, and this means that some of the brane fluctuations distinctive signals could be detected in future colliders and in direct or indirect dark matter searches., DGICYT (Spain), Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

This work was partially supported by the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia (Spain) (CICYT AEN 97-1693 and PB98-0782), In the context of a brane world and including an induced curvature term in the brane action, we obtain the effective Lagrangian for the Goldstone bosons (branons) associated with the spontaneous breaking of the translational invariance in the bulk. In addition to the branons, this effective action has Skyrmion-like solitonic states which can be understood as holes in the brane. We study their main properties such as mass and size, the Skyrmion-branon interaction, and their possible fermionic quantization. We also consider states where the brane is wrapped around the extra dimensions and their relation with the brane-Skyrmions. Finally, we extend our results to higher-dimensional branes, such as those appearing in M theory, where brane-Skyrmions could also be present., Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia (Spain), Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

J. A. R. C. thanks the support of the Becas Complutense del Amo program., The spectral study of the HESS J1745-290 high-energy gamma-ray cutoff from the Galactic center is compatible with a signal of dark matter (DM) annihilation or decay. If this is the case, a neutrino flux from that source is also expected. We analyze the neutrino flux predicted by DM particles able to create the HESS J1745-290 gamma-rays observations. We focus on the electroweak and hadronic channels, which are favored by present measurements. In particular, we study DM annihilating into W+W- and u (u) over bar with DM masses of 48.8 and 27.9 TeV, respectively. We estimate the resolution angle and exposition time necessary to test the DM hypothesis as the origin of the gamma-ray signal., MICINN (Spain), Consolider-Ingenio MULTIDARK, Department of Energy, Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

We pay especial attention to brane world models with low tension where the only relevant degrees of freedom at low energies are the Standard Model (SM) particles and the branons, which are transversal brane oscillations. By using an effective Lagrangian, we study some phenomenological consequences of these scenarios in a model independent way., DGICYT (Spain), Universidad Complutense del Amo Program, Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

The simulations have been carried out on the computing facilities of the Computational Center for Particle and Astrophysics (C2PAP) and the Leibniz Supercomputing Center (SuperMUC), on the local theory cluster (T30 cluster) of the Physics Department of the Technische Universitat Munchen (TUM), and on local computing facilities at the INFN-Firenze., We analyze LHC data in order to constrain the parameter space of new spin-2 particles universally coupled to the energy-momentum tensor. These new hypothetical particles are the so-called hidden gravitons, whose phenomenology at low energies is determined by two parameters: its mass and its dimensional coupling constant. Hidden gravitons arise in many different extensions of the Standard Model of particles and interactions and General Relativity. Their phenomenology has been studied mainly in relation to modifications of gravity and astrophysical signatures. In this work, we extend the constraints for heavy hidden gravitons, with masses larger than 1 GeV, by taking into account events collected by ATLAS and CMS in the WW channel, Drell-Yan processes, and the diphoton channel from proton-proton collisions at root s = 8TeV., Unión Europea. In particular, we work in a model provided with a gauge symmetry, with two scalar doublets. We start from a scale-invariant classical Lagrangian, but by taking into account the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, we obtain masses for the gauge bosons and the scalars. This approach typically provides a light (L) and a heavy (H) sector related to the two different vacuum expectation values of the two scalars. We compute the size of the hypervolume of the parameter space of the model associated with an interval of mass ratios between these two sectors. We define the probability as proportional to this size and conclude that probabilities of very large hierarchies are not negligible in the type of models studied in this work., Unión Europea. S.A.O. thanks IPARCOS-UCM and the CAM/FEDER Project No.S2018/TCS-4342 (QUITEMAD-CM) for funding support., Accelerating black holes are described by the so-called C-metric. In this work, we analyse the causal structure of such black holes by using null geodesics. We construct explicitly the relevant Penrose diagrams. First, we recover well-known results associated with the sub-accelerating black holes. Then, we extend the study to the super-accelerating case, in which an additional essential singularity appears. In addition, we consider accelerating black holes with negative masses. We show that they are equivalent to the geometry described by the black hole metric beyond conformal infinity. We compare our results with the Schwarzschild geometry to facilitate understanding and to highlight the interest of the new features., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN)/AEI, Comunidad de Madrid, Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

This research was supported by the Munich Institute for Astro-and Particle Physics (MIAPP) which is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) under Germany's Excellence Strategy-EXC-2094-390783311., Solutions to vacuum Einstein field equations with cosmological constants, such as the de Sitter space and the anti-de Sitter space, are basic in different cosmological and theoretical developments. It is also well known that complex structures admit metrics of this type. The most famous example is the complex projective space endowed with the Fubini-Study metric. In this work, we perform a systematic study of Einstein complex geometries derived from a logarithmic Kahler potential. Depending on the different contribution to the argument of such logarithmic term, we shall distinguish among direct, inverted and hybrid coordinates. They are directly related to the signature of the metric and determine the maximum domain of the complex space where the geometry can be defined., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN)/FEDER, Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR), German Research Foundation (DFG), Depto. de Física Teórica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub
