Abstract

Calculating the observable properties of chemical systems is often classically intractable and is widely viewed as a promising application of quantum information processing. Yet one of the most common and important chemical systems in nature - the hydrogen bond - has remained a challenge to study using quantum hardware on account of its anharmonic potential energy landscape. Here, we introduce a framework for solving hydrogen-bond systems and more generic chemical dynamics problems using quantum logic. We experimentally demonstrate a proof-of-principle instance of our method using the QSCOUT ion-trap quantum computer, in which we experimentally drive the ion-trap system to emulate the quantum wavepacket of the shared-proton within a hydrogen bond. Following the experimental creation of the shared-proton wavepacket, we then extract measurement observables such as its time-dependent spatial projection and its characteristic vibrational frequencies to spectroscopic accuracy (3.3 cm$^{-1}$ wavenumbers, corresponding to > 99.9% fidelity). Our approach introduces a new paradigm for studying the quantum chemical dynamics and vibrational spectra of molecules, and when combined with existing algorithms for electronic structure, opens the possibility to describe the complete behavior of complex molecular systems with unprecedented accuracy., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures plus supplementary material

4. Confinement from Correlated Instanton-Dyon Ensemble in SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory

Abstract

We study the confinement phase transition in $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory, based on a statistical ensemble model of correlated instanton-dyons. We show for the first time that such a model provides a quantitative description, in light of the lattice data, for the temperature dependence of the order parameter. We characterize the short-range interaction which plays a crucial role for the properties of such ensemble. The chromo-magnetic charge density as well as the spatial correlations is found to be consistent with known lattice and phenomenological information.

Abstract

The mechanism of confinement in Yang-Mills theories remains a challenge to our understanding of nonperturbative gauge dynamics. While it is widely perceived that confinement may arise from chromo-magnetically charged gauge configurations with nontrivial topology, it is not clear what types of configurations could do that and how, in pure Yang-Mills and QCD-like (non-supersymmetric) theories. Recently a promising approach has emerged, based on statistical ensembles of dyons/anti-dyons that are constituents of instanton/anti-instanton solutions with nontrivial holonomy where the holonomy plays a vital role as an effective "Higgsing" mechanism. We report a thorough numerical investigation of the confinement dynamics in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory by constructing such a statistical ensemble of correlated instanton-dyons.

Abstract

In this paper we use 1D quantum mechanical systems with Higgs-like interaction potential to study the emergence of topological objects at finite temperature. Two different model systems are studied, the standard double-well potential model and a newly introduced discrete kink model. Using Monte-Carlo simulations as well as analytic methods, we demonstrate how kinks become abundant at low temperatures. These results may shed useful insights on how topological phenomena may occur in QCD.

Abstract

Background: Pintomyia longiflocosa is considered a vector of etiological agents of cutaneous leishmaniasis. The objective of this research was to establish the parameters of the life cycle of Pi. longiflocosa in semi-controlled conditions in a rural area of the Campoalegre municipality, Huila, Colombia. Methodology/principal findings: The life cycle of individuals of Pi. longiflocosa, obtained from two cohorts of collected, fed, and individualized females, was monitored during two different times of the year (between February and August 2020 and between July 2020 and January 2021, respectively). Determining parameters associated with the fertility and fecundity, time and attributes of development and survival, and its association with abiotic variables. The average duration of Cycle 1 (C1) and Cycle 2 (C2) was 134.9 and 148.78 days, respectively. The gonotrophic cycle of parental females presented significant differences (p-value <0.05) between C1 and C2 (8.47 and 11.42 days) as well as between fecundity and fertility parameters. The number of days it takes the development of the immature stages between the two cycles studied, also showed significant differences in the larvae II (15.21 and 22.23), larvae III (11.93 and 17.56), and pupae (24.48 and 22.9) stages. During C1, the survival rate was higher and consistent with the productivity of adult individuals (F1), compared to C2. Fecundity and fertility values were significantly higher in C2. Finally, a significant correlation between the number of individuals and temperature was evidenced in C1 while, for C2, there was a negative correlation with precipitation. Conclusions/significance: Significant differences were found in several biological and reproductive parameters between the two cycles monitored. The parameters of the life cycle of Pi. longiflocosa in its natural habitat would be influenced by environmental factors related to the annual seasonality in the sub-Andean rural area, conditioning the temporal distribution of this species and, consequently, the possible transmission of causative agents of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Author summary: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a public health disease that affects more than 300 million people in tropical areas in the world and its causative agent is a parasite of the genus Leishmania. In recent decades, the cases in Latin America have increased, corresponding to 6% of cases in the tropical regions of the planet. An insect potential vector associated with the transmission of CL in these tropical and endemic areas is Pintomyia longiflocosa. Therefore, it is very important to investigate the environmental parameters that can influence its life cycle and its vector competence and vector capacity, aspects that are not fully known. In Colombia, an endemic focus is located in the Huila state, in a rural area of the municipality of Campoalegre, where this study was carried out. The authors found the relationship between some environmental parameters with the life cycle of Pi. longiflocosa under semi-controlled conditions in forested habitats, aspects that were not known until now. The impact of temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation on the gonotrophic cycle, fecundity, fertility, time of development and survival, was evidenced. 27. Co-operative conflict resolution in autonomous aircraft operations using a multi-agent approach

Abstract

The future Air Traffic Management is anticipated to feature Autonomous Aircraft Operations in specifically designated airspace. Aircraft flying in this airspace will be referred to as Autonomous Aircraft and will need to meet certain airborne equipment requirements. Autonomous Aircraft will be free to fly operator-preferred routes and their flight crews will have the task of maintaining safe separation from other Autonomous Aircraft without the intervention of Air Traffic Control. A conflict resolution methodology will be in place to enable flight crews to prevent violations of the established separation minima. To apply the conflict resolution methodology, the flight crews may need the assistance of on-board decision-support tools. Autonomous Aircraft Operations have the potential to improve the safety and efficiency of flight operations in regions of airspace with no radar-based Air Traffic Control coverage. This thesis investigates the potential application of Distributed Artificial Intelligence concepts and techniques to develop co-operative conflict resolution methodologies for Autonomous Aircraft Operations. In this context, the term "co-operative" is used to describe conflict resolution methodologies by which conflicting Autonomous Aircraft safely co-ordinate their resolution actions so that the resolution costs are shared equitably amongst all the Autonomous Aircraft involved. A new approach to conflict resolution in Autonomous Aircraft Operations is proposed based on the sub-field of Distributed Artificial Intelligence concerned with the study of multi-agent systems. This new approach designates Autonomous Aircraft as intelligent agents and considers conflict resolution as a co-operative activity in the framework of a multi-agent system. The means necessary for co-operation in a multi-agent system are provided by a cooperation mechanism. Following a review of multi-agent systems research literature, two main types of co-operation mechanisms have been identified: behaviouristic and reflective. The former type refers to co-operation mechanisms that allow the agents to be seen as acting co-operatively by an external observer, regardless of whether or not the agents are knowingly co-operating. The latter type refers to co-operation mechanisms that allow agents to engage knowingly in co-operative activity, regardless of whether or not they are seen to act co-operatively by an external observer. To illustrate the capabilities of the proposed multi-agent approach, two examples of cooperation mechanisms that could be implemented as co-operative conflict resolution methodologies in Autonomous Aircraft Operations are presented. The first co-operation mechanism is of the behaviouristic type and has been developed specifically for an operational environment where Autonomous Aircraft can only exchange information with one another through Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast. The second co-operation mechanism is of the reflective type and has been developed specifically for an operational environment where Autonomous Aircraft can also exchange information with one another on a one-to-one basis using a point-to-point digital data-link. The two co-operation mechanisms include the necessary algorithms, protocols and procedures to design on-board decision support tools that could aid flight crews in resolving conflicts co-operatively. The performances of the co-operation mechanisms in two-dimensional conflict scenarios, involving up to three aircraft, are analysed and compared.
