Development of memory devices with ultimate performance has played a key role in innovation of modern electronics. As a mainstream technology nonvolatile memory devices have manifested high capacity and mechanical reliability, however current major bottlenecks include low extinction ratio and slow operational speed. Although substantial effort has been employed to improve their performance, a typical hundreds of micro- or even milli- second write time remains a few orders of magnitude longer than their volatile counterparts. We have demonstrated nonvolatile, floating-gate memory devices based on van der Waals heterostructures with atomically sharp interfaces between different functional elements, and achieved ultrahigh-speed programming/erasing operations verging on an ultimate theoretical limit of nanoseconds with extinction ratio up to 10^10. This extraordinary performance has allowed new device capabilities such as multi-bit storage, thus opening up unforeseen applications in the realm of modern nanoelectronics and offering future fabrication guidelines for device scale-up., Comment: Preprint version, to be published in Nature Nanotechnology (Submitted on August 16th, 2020)

Atherosclerosis is the main cause of cardiovascular disease. Systemic inflammation is one important characteristic in atherosclerosis. Pro-inflammatory macrophages can secrete inflammatory factors and promote the inflammation of atherosclerosis. It has a great value for the treatment of atherosclerosis by inhibiting the release of inflammatory factors in macrophages. However, the detailed mechanism of this process is still unclear. In this study, we constructed an APOE-/- mice model of atherosclerosis to research the molecular mechanism of atherosclerosis. Protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 2 (PTPN2), an anti-inflammatory gene, was dramatically decreased in inflammatory mice. Deletion of PTPN2 could significantly induce monocytes toward M1 phenotype of macrophages, enhance the secretion of IL-12 and IL-1, and promote cell proliferation, invasion and metastasis. Mechanism research showed that PTPN2-mediated p65/p38/STAT3 de-phosphorylation could block the process of macrophage inflammation. In vivo experiments showed that PTPN2 may effectively inhibit the inflammatory response during atherosclerosis. In conclusion, we uncovered the negative role of PTPN2 in the occurrence of atherosclerosis, and this study provides a new potential target for atherosclerosis treatment.

Hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R)-induced myocardial cell injury is the main cause of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Many proofs show that circular RNA plays an important role in the development of AMI. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of circSAMD4A in H/R-induced myocardial injury. The levels of circular SAMD4A (circSAMD4A) were detected in the heart tissues of AMI mice and H/R-induced H9C2 cells, and the circSAMD4A was suppressed in AMI mice and H/R-induced H9C2 cells to investigate its' function in AMI. The levels of circSAMD4A and miR-138-5p were detected by real-time quantitative PCR, and MTT assay was used to detect cell viability. TUNEL analysis and Annexin V-FITC were used to determine apoptosis. The expression of Bcl-2 and Bax proteins was detected by Western blot. IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6 were detected by ELISA kits. The study found that the levels of circSAMD4A were up-regulated after H/R induction and inhibition of circSAMD4A expression would reduce the H/R-induced apoptosis and inflammation. MiR-138-5p was down-regulated in H/R-induced H9C2 cells. circSAMD4A was a targeted regulator of miR-138-5p. CircSAMD4A inhibited the expression of miR-138-5p to promote H/R-induced myocardial cell injury in vitro and vivo. In conclusion, CircSAMD4A can sponge miR-138-5p to promote H/R-induced apoptosis and inflammatory response.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials as channel materials provide a promising alternative route for future electronics and flexible electronics, but the device performance is affected by the quality of interface between the 2D-material channel and the gate dielectric. Here we demonstrate an indium selenide (InSe)/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)/graphite heterostructure as a 2D field-effect transistor (FET), with InSe as channel material, hBN as dielectric, and graphite as gate. The fabricated FETs feature high electron mobility up to 1,146 cm2V−1s−1 at room temperature and on/off ratio up to 1010 due to the atomically flat gate dielectric. Integrated digital inverters based on InSe/hBN/graphite heterostructures are constructed by local gating modulation and an ultrahigh voltage gain up to 93.4 is obtained. Taking advantages of the mechanical flexibility of these materials, we integrated the heterostructured InSe FET on a flexible substrate, exhibiting little modification of device performance at a high strain level of up to 2%. Such high-performance heterostructured device configuration based on 2D materials provides a new way for future electronics and flexible electronics.

A graphene wrinkle is a quasi-one-dimensional structure and can alter the intrinsic physical and chemical activity, modify the band structure and introduce transport anisotropy in graphene thin films. However, the quasi-one-dimensional electrical transport contribution of wrinkles to the whole graphene films compared to that of the two-dimensional flat graphene nearby has still been elusive. Here, we report measurements of relatively high conductivity in micrometer-wide graphene wrinkles on SiO2/Si substrates using an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) four-probe scanning tunneling microscope. Combining the experimental results with resistor network simulations, the wrinkle conductivity at the charge neutrality point shows a much higher conductivity up to ∼33.6 times compared to that of the flat monolayer region. The high conductivity can be attributed not only to the wrinkled multilayer structure but also to the large strain gradients located mainly in the boundary area. This method can also be extended to evaluate the electrical-transport properties of wrinkled structures in other two-dimensional materials.

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), a zero-dimensional material system with distinct physical properties, have great potential in the applications of photonics, electronics, photovoltaics, and quantum information. In particular, GQDs are promising candidates for quantum computing. In principle, a sub-10 nm size is required for GQDs to present the intrinsic quantum properties. However, with such an extreme size, GQDs have predominant edges with lots of active dangling bonds and thus are not stable. Satisfying the demands of both quantum size and stability is therefore of great challenge in the design of GQDs. Herein we demonstrate the fabrication of sub-10 nm stable GQD arrays by embedding GQDs into large-bandgap hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). With this method, the dangling bonds of GQDs were passivated by the surrounding h-BN lattice to ensure high stability, meanwhile maintaining their intrinsic quantum properties. The sub-10 nm nanopore array was first milled in h-BN using an advanced high-resolution helium ion microscope and then GQDs were directly grown in them through the chemical vapour deposition process. Stability analysis proved that the embedded GQDs show negligible property decay after baking at 100 °C in air for 100 days. The success in preparing sub-10 nm stable GQD arrays will promote the physical exploration and potential applications of this unique zero-dimensional in-plane quantum material.

Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) can activate platelets and increase thrombosis risk in clinical and experimental models. Meanwhile, the patients with coronary artery disease have higher serum TMAO level. However, it remains unknown whether Clopidogrel Resistance (CR) could be attributed to TMAO. The present study aimed investigate the effects of TMAO on clopidogrel in ischemia and reperfusion (IR) model in rats. Clopidogrel could (1) promote the production of platelets, induce an increase in the platelet-larger cell ratio; (2) prolong the tail bleeding time; (3) reduce platelet aggregation function, induced by ADP, and alleviate myocardial thrombus burden. TMAO could partially offset the effects of clopidogrel and induce CR. Thus, the present study demonstrated that circulating TMAO could reduce the inhibitory effects of clopidogrel on platelet aggregation. TMAO may be a potential mediator of clopidogrel resistance.

A low-temperature ultra-high vacuum scanning probe microscopy (SPM) system with molecular beam epitaxy capability and optical access was conceived, built, and tested in our lab. The design of the whole system is discussed here, with special emphasis on some critical parts. We made an SPM scanner head with a modified Pan-type design, enclosed by a double-layer cold room under a bath type cryostat. The scanner head is very rigid, compatible with optical access paths, and can accommodate both scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tips and atomic force sensors. Two piezo-actuated focus-lens stages are mounted on the two sides of the cold room to couple light in and out. To demonstrate the system performance, we performed STM and scanning tunneling spectroscopy studies. The herringbone reconstruction and atomic structure of Au(111) surface were clearly resolved. The dI/dV spectra of an Au(111) surface were obtained at 5 K. In addition, a periodic 2D tellurium (Te) structure was grown on Au(111) surface using MBE.

The kagome lattice Co3Sn2S2 exhibits the quintessential topological phenomena of a magnetic Weyl semimetal such as the chiral anomaly and Fermi-arc surface states. Probing its magnetic properties is crucial for understanding this correlated topological state. Here, using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) and non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) combined with first-principle calculations, we report the discovery of localized spin-orbit polarons (SOPs) with three-fold rotation symmetry nucleated around single S-vacancies in Co3Sn2S2. The SOPs carry a magnetic moment and a large diamagnetic orbital magnetization of a possible topological origin associated relating to the diamagnetic circulating current around the S-vacancy. Appreciable magneto-elastic coupling of the SOP is detected by nc-AFM and STM. Our findings suggest that the SOPs can enhance magnetism and more robust time-reversal-symmetry-breaking topological phenomena. Controlled engineering of the SOPs may pave the way toward practical applications in functional quantum devices., Kagome lattice material Co3Sn2S2 is identified as a magnetic Weyl semimetal and its magnetic properties are less studied. BACKGROUND Atrial ganglionated plexus (GP) ablation was proved to have therapeutic effects on vasovagal syncope. The study aimed to investigate whether selective ablation of only right anterior GP (ARGP) and right inferior GP (IRGP) was effective in a canine model of vasovagal syncope. METHODS Seventeen mongrel dogs were divided into control (N = 10) and ablation group (N = 7). Bilateral thoracotomy was performed at the fourth intercostal space and ARGP and IRGP were ablated in the ablation group. A bolus of veratridine (15 ug/kg) was injected into the left atrium to induce vasovagal reflex. Surface electrocardiogram and blood pressure (BP) were continuously monitored. Heart rate (HR) variability was calculated to represent cardiac autonomic tone. RESULTS Veratridine injection induced vasovagal reflex in all dogs. HR decreased from 149 ± 17 to 89 ± 33 beats/min (P

INTRODUCTION Cardiac sympathetic activation facilitates atrial electrical remodeling during atrial fibrillation (AF). Selective ablation of the distal part of the ligament of Marshall (LOMLSPV ) could decrease cardiac sympathetic innervation. This study aimed to investigate the effects of LOMLSPV ablation on atrial electrical remodeling in a short-term rapid atrial pacing (RAP) model. METHODS In 16 anesthetized dogs, 6 hours of RAP (20 Hz, 2 × threshold) was delivered before LOMLSPV ablation (group 1, N = 8) or after (group 2, N = 8). Heart rate variability (HRV), serum norepinephrine (NE), atrial electrophysiological indices were analyzed. Six times of burst pacing (20 Hz, 2 × threshold, lasting for 5 seconds, were performed to induce AF, the number of episodes and the duration of AF were compared. RESULTS LOMLSPV ablation decreased sympathetic indices of HRV and serum NE. Atrial effective refractory period (ERP) was shortened during RAP in both groups with higher reduction degrees in group 1. In group 1, the shortening of atrial ERP, elevating of ERP dispersion and sum of window of vulnerability (ΣWOV), facilitating of AF induced by RAP were subsequently reversed by LOMLSPV ablation. In group 2, LOMLSPV ablation prolonged atrial ERP, decreased ΣWOV, eliminated AF induction. The subsequent RAP failed to alter these indices. Histological studies showed abundant sympathetic nerve fibers in LOMLSPV . CONCLUSION LOMLSPV ablation could inhibit atrial electrical remodeling during short-term RAP by reducing the cardiac sympathetic activity. LOMLSPV may be a potential target in AF ablation, especially in patients with highly cardiac sympathetic activation or atrial electrical remodeling.

Individuals predisposed to vasovagal syncope may have different autonomic nervous system control mechanisms from those without predisposition to vasovagal events. To test this hypothesis, we investigated different sympathetic responses in a canine model of vasovagal syncope. Left thoracotomy was performed on 20 mongrel dogs. The heart was exposed and a bolus of veratridine (15 μg/kg), a neurotoxin which prevents the inactivation of sodium ion channels, was injected into the left atrium to induce a Bezold–Jarisch reflex-mediated vasovagal event, characterized by bradycardia, decreased inotropism, and hypotension. Electrocardiogram and blood pressure were continuously monitored. Neural activity was recorded from the left stellate ganglion. Plasma norepinephrine and acetylcholine levels were measured 30 s before and 30 s after veratridine injection. Veratridine resulted in rapid decreases in heart rate and blood pressure in all dogs, accompanied by increases in both norepinephrine and acetylcholine. Two types of neural activity (high-amplitude spike discharge activity and low-amplitude burst discharge activity) were recorded from the left stellate ganglion. Veratridine induced high-frequency spike discharge activity in some dogs (Group A), whereas spike discharge activity was scarce and relatively unresponsive to veratridine in the remaining dogs (Group B). Dogs in Group A had higher plasma norepinephrine levels (111.63 ± 15.1 vs. 48.11 ± 33.81 ng/l, p = 0.002) and less intense drops in heart rate (− 37 ± 24 vs. − 84 ± 28 bpm, p = 0.001) and blood pressure (systolic blood pressure, − 18 ± 15 vs. − 37 ± 13 mmHg, p = 0.009; diastolic blood pressure, − 26 ± 13 vs. − 45 ± 13 mmHg, p = 0.005) compared to dogs in Group B. Background Heart failure (HF) is associated with autonomic dysfunction. Vagus nerve stimulation has been shown to improve cardiac function both in HF patients and animal models of HF. The purpose of this present study is to investigate the effects of ganglionated plexus stimulation (GPS) on HF progression and autonomic remodeling in a canine model of acute HF post-myocardial infarction. Methods and results Eighteen adult mongrel male dogs were randomized into the control (n = 8) and GPS (n = 10) groups. All dogs underwent left anterior descending artery ligation followed by 6-hour high-rate (180–220 bpm) ventricular pacing to induce acute HF. Transthoracic 2-dimensional echocardiography was performed at different time points. The plasma levels of norepinephrine, B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and Ang-II were measured using ELISA kits. C-fos and nerve growth factor (NGF) proteins expressed in the left stellate ganglion as well as GAP43 and TH proteins expressed in the peri-infarct zone were measured using western blot. After 6 h of GPS, the left ventricular end-diastolic volume, end-systolic volume and ejection fraction showed no significant differences between the 2 groups, but the interventricular septal thickness at end-systole in the GPS group was significantly higher than that in the control group. The plasma levels of norepinephrine, BNP, Ang-II were increased 1 h after myocardial infarction while the increase was attenuated by GPS. The expression of c-fos and NGF proteins in the left stellate ganglion as well as GAP43 and TH proteins in cardiac peri-infarct zone in GPS group were significantly lower than that in control group. Conclusions GPS inhibits cardiac sympathetic remodeling and attenuates HF progression in canines with acute HF induced by myocardial infarction and ventricular pacing.

We report the design of a time-shared switching scheme, aiming to realize the manipulation and working modes (imaging mode and transport measurement mode) switching between multiple scanning tunneling microscope (STM) probes one by one with a shared STM control system (STM CS) and an electrical transport characterization system. This scheme comprises three types of switch units, switchable preamplifiers (SWPAs), high voltage amplifiers, and a main control unit. Together with the home-made software kit providing the graphical user interface, this scheme achieves a seamless switching process between different STM probes. Compared with the conventional scheme using multiple independent STM CSs, this scheme possesses more compatibility, flexibility, and expansibility for lower cost. The overall architecture and technique issues are discussed in detail. The performances of the system are demonstrated, including the millimeter scale moving range and atomic scale resolution of a single STM probe, safely approached multiple STM probes beyond the resolution of the optical microscope (1.1 µm), qualified STM imaging, and accurate electrical transport characterization. The combinational technique of imaging and transport characterization is also shown, which is supported by SWPA switches with ultra-high open circuit resistance (909 TΩ). These successful experiments prove the effectiveness and the usefulness of the scheme. In addition, the scheme can be easily upgraded with more different functions and numbers of probe arrays, thus opening a new way to build an extremely integrated and high throughput characterization platform.

High-quality single-layered and bilayered graphene (SLG and BLG) was synthesized on copper foil surfaces by controllable chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Impurity nanoparticles formed on the copper foil surface by hightemperature annealing were found to play a crucial role in the growth of BLG. Analysis of energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) data indicated that these nanoparticles consisted of silicon and aluminum. According to the inverted wedding cake model, these nanoparticles served as nucleation centers for BLG growth and the free space between a nanoparticle and graphene served as the center of C injection for the continuous growth of the adlayer beneath the top layer. By combining phase-field theory simulations, we confirmed the mechanism of BLG growth and revealed more details about it in comparison with SLG growth. For the first time, this study led to a complete understanding of the BLG growth mechanism from nucleation to continuous growth in the CVD process, and it has opened a door to the thickness-controllable synthesis of graphene.

Background/Aims: Hesperidin pretreatment has been shown to protect against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, but the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the cardioprotective effects of a 3-day hesperidin pretreatment on I/R injury and to further explore whether its mechanism of action was associated with the inhibition of high mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1) expression via the PI3K/Akt pathway. Methods: In a fixed-dose study, hematoxylin and eosin staining and myocardial enzyme measurements were used to determine the optimal dose of hesperidin that elicited the best cardioprotective effects against I/R injury. Furthermore, rats were pretreated with 200 mg/kg hesperidin, and infarct size and the levels of myocardial enzymes, apoptosis, inflammatory and oxidative indices, and HMGB1 and p-Akt expression were measured. Results: Our results indicated that while different 3-day hesperidin pretreatment doses promoted histopathological changes and reduced myocardial enzymes induced by I/R the optimal dose was 200 mg/kg. Moreover, the 200 mg/kg hesperidin pretreatment not only significantly decreased the infarct size as well as myocardial enzyme levels but also inhibited myocardial apoptosis, the inflammatory response and oxidative stress. Additionally, hesperidin downregulated HMGB1 expression and upregulated p-Akt expression in the myocardium. LY294002, a specific PI3K inhibitor, partially reversed the decreased HMGB1 expression, increased p-Akt expression induced by hesperidin and abolished the anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects of hesperidin. Conclusion: These findings suggest that short-term pretreatment with hesperidin protects against myocardial I/R injury by suppressing myocardial apoptosis, the inflammatory response and oxidative stress via PI3K/Akt pathway activation and HMGB1 inhibition.

Long noncoding RNA UCA1 has exerted a significant effect in cardiovascular disease. The biological role of UCA1 in atherosclerosis is unclear. Our study was to identify the potential mechanisms in the progression of atherosclerosis. Here, we observed that ox-LDL increased UCA1 expression greatly in THP-1 cells. Knockdown of UCA1 greatly inhibited CD36 expression, a crucial biomarker in atherosclerosis. Meanwhile, 20 μg/ml ox-LDL induced foam cell formation, which can be reversed by downregulation of UCA1. In addition, TC and TG levels induced by ox-LDL was rescued by UCA1 small interfering RNA. Accumulating studies have indicated that oxidative stress contributes to atherosclerosis progression. Here, we also found that reactive oxygen species, MDA, and THP-1 cell apoptosis were restrained by decreased of UCA1 with an increase of the superoxide dismutase activity. Moreover, miR-206 was predicted as a target of UCA1 and knockdown of UCA1 was able to repress miR-206 expression. Furthermore, overexpression of miR-206 inhibited oxidative stress process and it was reversed by UCA1 upregulation in vitro. In conclusion, we indicated that UCA1 sponged miR-206 to exacerbate atherosclerosis events induced by ox-LDL in THP-1 cells.

Background: Sympathetic denervation exerts protective effects against ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) induced by acute myocardial infarction. The results of a previous study indicated that the distal part of the ligament of Marshall (LOM LSPV ) might be a sympathetic conduit between the left stellate ganglion (LSG) and the ventricles. The present study was designed to compare the effects between LSG and LOM LSPV ablation on ischemia-induced VAs. Methods: Twenty-nine dogs were randomly divided into sham ablation group (group 1, n=9), LOM LSPV ablation group (group 2, n=10), and LSG ablation group (group 3, n=10). Ablation was performed before occlusion of the left anterior coronary artery. Changes in the heart rate variability, serum norepinephrine, ventricular effective refractory period, and blood pressure induced by LSG stimulation were observed, and the occurrence of VAs was recorded. Immunostaining examinations of LOM LSPV were performed in dogs without ablation. RESULTS: In group 2, LOM LSPV ablation evidently attenuated blood pressure elevation induced by LSG stimulation. Both LOM LSPV ablation and LSG ablation similarly prolonged ventricular effective refractory period and reduced the concentration of serum norepinephrine, the sympathetic index of heart rate variability, and the incidence of VAs compared with sham ablation. Abundant sympathetic nerve fibers were observed in LOM LSPV . Conclusions: LOM LSPV ablation prevented acute myocardial infarction–induced VAs with the same efficiency as LSG ablation, potentially by blocking the sympathetic pathway from the LSG to the heart.

Hesperidin has been reported to attenuate myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury; however, its effect on autophagy during myocardial I/R and the underlying mechanism remains unknown. The present study aimed to investigate whether hesperidin inhibited I/R-induced excessive myocardial autophagy through activating the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway. Male adult rats were pretreated with hesperidin for a total of 3 days prior to ischemia in the absence or presence of LY294002, a PI3K inhibitor, and then subjected to ischemia for 30 min followed by reperfusion for 4 h. Myocardial infarct size was measured by Evans blue/triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was used for observing the histological changes in the heart, and the serum levels of creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Additionally, the protein levels of light chain (LC) 3II, Beclin1, phosphorylated (p)-mTOR, p-Akt and p-PI3K were determined by western blot analysis. Hesperidin pretreatment significantly decreased the myocardial infarct size, myocardial damage and serum levels of CK-MB and cTnI. Furthermore, the expression levels of LC3II and Beclin1 were significantly downregulated and the expression levels of p-mTOR, p-Akt and p-PI3K were markedly upregulated by hesperidin. However, the aforementioned effects as a result of hesperidin were significantly reversed by the presence of LY294002. These results demonstrated that hesperidin reduced myocardial I/R injury by suppressing excessive autophagy. Activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway contributed to the inhibitory effect of hesperidin on excessive autophagy.

Interleukin (IL)-17A has an important role in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, and vagal stimulation (VS) has been demonstrated to exert cardioprotective effects. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of VS on a rat model of myocardial I/R injury, and detected an association between VS and IL-17A. Anesthetized rats underwent VS (2 msec; 10 Hz) or were treated with anti-IL-17A neutralized monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) (200 µg; iv), and subjected to ischemia for 30 min prior to 4 h reperfusion. The following parameters were measured: Infarct size; lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and caspase-3 activity levels; tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and IL-6 expression levels; and the percentage of terminal deoxynucleotidyl-transferase mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) positive cells. Grain boundaries (GBs) in polycrystalline graphene scatter charge carriers, which reduces carrier mobility and limits graphene applications in high-speed electronics. Here we report the extraction of the resistivity of GBs and the effect of GBs on carrier mobility by direct four-probe measurements on millimeter-sized graphene bicrystals grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). To extract the GB resistivity and carrier mobility from direct four-probe intragrain and intergrain measurements, an electronically equivalent extended 2D GB region is defined based on Ohm's law. Measurements on seven representative GBs find that the maximum resistivities are in the range of several kΩ·μm to more than 100 kΩ·μm. Furthermore, the mobility in these defective regions is reduced to 0.4-5.9‰ of the mobility of single-crystal, pristine graphene. Similarly, the effect of wrinkles on carrier transport can also be derived. The present approach provides a reliable way to directly probe charge-carrier scattering at GBs and can be further applied to evaluate the GB effect of other two-dimensional polycrystalline materials, such as transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs).

Upgrade of a commercial ultra-high vacuum four-probe scanning tunneling microscopy system for atomic resolution capability and thermal stability is reported. To improve the mechanical and thermal performance of the system, we introduced extra vibration isolation, magnetic damping, and double thermal shielding, and we redesigned the scanning structure and thermal links. The success of the upgrade is characterized by its atomically resolved imaging, steady cooling down cycles with high efficiency, and standard transport measurement capability. Our design may provide a feasible way for the upgrade of similar commercial systems.

When a crystal is subjected to a periodic potential, under certain circumstances (such as when the period of the potential is close to the crystal periodicity; the potential is strong enough, etc.) it might adjust itself to follow the periodicity of the potential, resulting in a, so called, commensurate state. Such commensurate-incommensurate transitions are ubiquitous phenomena in many areas of condensed matter physics: from magnetism and dislocations in crystals, to vortices in superconductors, and atomic layers adsorbed on a crystalline surface. Of particular interest might be the properties of topological defects between the two commensurate phases: solitons, domain walls, and dislocation walls. Here we report a commensurate-incommensurate transition for graphene on top of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Depending on the rotational angle between the two hexagonal lattices, graphene can either stretch to adjust to a slightly different hBN periodicity (the commensurate state found for small rotational angles) or exhibit little adjustment (the incommensurate state). In the commensurate state, areas with matching lattice constants are separated by domain walls that accumulate the resulting strain. Such soliton-like objects present significant fundamental interest, and their presence might explain recent observations when the electronic, optical, Raman and other properties of graphene-hBN heterostructures have been notably altered.

Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with hypoxia in which cardiac autonomic nerve system (ANS) plays an important role. Our previous studies indicated that ANS is activated in an intermittent hypoxia model and contributes to AF initiation. This study aimed to investigate the effects of cardiac ganglionated plexus (GP) ablation on AF in this model. Methods and results In thirteen anesthetized male dogs, GP ablation was applied after 1 h of intermittent hypoxia in the first group (n = 7) and before that in the second group (n = 6). The heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), arterial blood gases, heart rate viability indices, atrial effective refractory period (ERP) and window of vulnerability (WOV), the sum of WOVs (ΣWOV) were measured. In both groups, HR, BP increased and then declined during hypoxia, and not significantly affected by GP ablation. Hypoxemia, hypercapnia and acidosis were observed after intermittent hypoxia. In the first group, both of low frequency power (LF) and high frequency power (HF) increased during hypoxia. At the end of intermittent hypoxia, LF/HF ratio decreased, ERP shortened and ΣWOV increased. The following GP ablation resulted in increases in LF, LF/HF, ERP and decreases in HF, ΣWOV. In the second group, GP ablation caused increases in LF, LF/HF, ERP and decrease in HF. Subsequently, ERP shortened at several sites after intermittent hypoxia. However, there were no significant changes in LF/HF ratio or ΣWOV. Conclusions Cardiac ANS plays an important role in hypoxia-induced AF. AF associated with hypoxia might be prevented or reversed by GP ablation.

The capabilities to tune the conduction properties of materials by doping or electric fields are essential for the design of electronic devices. However, in two-dimensional materials substitutional doping has been achieved in only a few systems, such as Nb substitutional doping in MoS2. Surface charge transfer is still one of the popular ways to control whether the conduction is dominated by holes or electrons. Here, we demonstrate that a capping layer of cross-linked poly(methyl methacrylate) modifies the potential in a black phosphorus (BP) layer so that conduction in the absence of an external electric field is dominated by electrons, rather than holes. Using this technique to form adjoining regions dominated by hole and electron conduction, a family of novel planar devices, such as BP-gated diodes, BP bidirectional rectifier, and BP logic inverters, can be fabricated. The devices are potentially useful for electronic applications, including rectification and switching.

Background/Aims: Inflammation and oxidative stress play an important role in myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury. We hypothesized that IL-23, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, could promote myocardial I/R injury by increasing the inflammatory response and oxidative stress. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into sham operated control (SO) group, ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) group, (IL-23 + I/R) group and (anti-IL-23 + I/R) group. At 4 h after reperfusion, the serum concentration of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK) and the tissue MDA concentration and SOD activity were measured. The infarcte size was measured by TTC staining. Apoptosis in heart sections were measured by TUNEL staining. The expression of HMGB1 and IL-17A were detected by Western Blotting and the expression of TNF-α and IL-6 were detected by Elisa. Results: After 4 h reperfusion, compared with the I/R group, IL-23 significantly increased the infarct size, the apoptosis of cardiomyocytes and the levels of LDH and CK (all P < 0.05). Meanwhile, IL-23 significantly increased the expression of eIL-17A, TNF-α and IL-6 and enhanced both the increase of the MDA level and the decrease of the SOD level induced by I/R (all P 0.05). All these effects were abolished by anti-IL-23 administration. Conclusion: The present study suggested that IL-23 may promote myocardial I/R injury by increasing the inflammatory responses and oxidative stress reaction.

Heterostructures from mechanically-assembled stacks of two-dimensional materials allow for versatile electronic device applications. Here, we demonstrate the intrinsic charge transport behaviors in graphene-black phosphorus heterojunction devices under different charge carrier densities and temperature regimes. At high carrier densities or in the ON state, tunneling through the Schottky barrier at the interface between graphene and black phosphorus dominates at low temperatures. With temperature increasing, the Schottky barrier at the interface is vanishing, and the channel current starts to decrease with increasing temperature, behaving like a metal. While at low carrier densities or in the OFF state, thermal emission over the Schottky barrier at the interface dominates the carriers transport process. A barrier height of ~ 67.3 meV can be extracted from the thermal emission-diffusion theory.

We report the direct measurements of conductivity and mobility in millimeter-sized single-crystalline graphene on SiO2/Si via van der Pauw geometry by using a home-designed four-probe scanning tunneling microscope (4P-STM). The gate-tunable conductivity and mobility are extracted from standard van der Pauw resistance measurements where the four STM probes contact the four peripheries of hexagonal graphene flakes, respectively. The high homogeneity of transport properties of the single-crystalline graphene flake is confirmed by comparing the extracted conductivities and mobilities from three setups with different geometry factors. Our studies provide a reliable solution for directly evaluating the entire electrical properties of graphene in a non-invasive way and could be extended to characterizing other two-dimensional materials.

In complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, well-defined unipolar transport in field-effect transistors (FETs) is a basic requirement for logic operations, which can be realized by controllable doping of the semiconductor with electrons (n-type) or holes (p-type). However, recent demonstration of polarity controllable transistors in 2D semiconductors provides a flexible way in circuit design with increased circuit integration density. Here we demonstrate the conversion of a bidirectional rectifier to a polarity-controllable transistor in black phosphorus (BP) by dual gate modulation. Electrical characterization of the BP bidirectional rectifier reveals a current rectification of ~35 at room temperature that increases to ~350 upon lowering the temperature to 110 K. Employing cross-linked PMMA as a top gate and combining it together with the global back gate of the SiO2 substrate, well-defined unipolar transport (n- or p-type) in BP could get accessed. This successful realization of polarity-controllable transistor in BP provides an alternative design for development of BP logic electronics.

Achieving superior solar cell performance based on the colloidal nanocrystals remains challenging due to their complex surface composition. Much attention has been devoted to the development of effective surface modification strategies to enhance electronic coupling between the nanocrystals to promote charge carrier transport. Herein, we aim to attach benzenedithiol ligands onto the surface of CdSe nanocrystals in the "face-on" geometry to minimize the nanocrystal-nanocrystal or polymer-nanocrystal distance. Furthermore, the "electroactive" π-orbitals of the benzenedithiol are expected to further enhance the electronic coupling, which facilitates charge carrier dissociation and transport. The electron mobility of CdSe QD films was improved 20 times by tuning the ligand orientation, and high performance poly[2,6-(4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b']-dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT):CdSe nanocrystal hybrid solar cells were also achieved, showing a highest power conversion efficiency of 4.18%. This research could open up a new pathway to improve further the performance of colloidal nanocrystal based solar cells.

We report few-layer SnSe2 field effect transistors (FETs) with high current on/off ratios. By trying different gate configurations, 300 nm SiO2 and 70 nm HfO2 as back gate only and 70 nm HfO2 as back gate combined with a top capping layer of polymer electrolyte, few-layer SnSe2 FET with a current on/off ratio of 104 can be obtained. This provides a reliable solution for electrically modulating quasi-two-dimensional materials with high electron density (over 1013 cm−2) for field-effect transistor applications.
