The role of root hairs in Cd acquisition from soil was investigated in three pot experiments using a root hairless mutant (bald root barley, brb) and its wild-type (WT) cultivar of barley (Hordeum vulgare). brb had significantly lower concentrations and lower total amounts of Cd in shoots than WT. The Cd uptake efficiency based on total root length was 8-45% lower in brb than in WT. The difference between brb and WT increased with increasing extractable Cd in soil under the experimental conditions used. Additions of phosphate to soil decreased Cd extractability. Both soil and foliar additions of phosphate decreased root length, and root hair formation in WT. These effects resulted in decreased Cd uptake with increasing P supply. Cd uptake in WT correlated significantly with root length, root hair length and density, and soil extractable Cd. Root hairs contribute significantly to Cd uptake by barley.

In the electric field and layer-to-layer interaction energy, the law of split-level of high-level Stark effect of spherical nanometer system is explored as well as the frequency of spectrum, intensity and size effect of coefficient of spontaneous radiation. Taking three layers CdS/HgS spherical nanometer system as an example, the influence of the electric field and layer-to-layer interaction energy is explored on Stark effect and spectrum. The results show that in the Stark effect system, the energy level is split based on 1, 3, ···, (2n−1), when it is in the electric field only, similar to the hydrogen atoms; and in the electric field and layer-to-layer interaction, it is split based on 1, 4, ···, n2; with the quantum transition, the frequency of the spectrum decreases with the increasing size of the system; apart from a few spectral lines, the intensity of most spectral lines will decreased as the size increases; while the coefficient of spontaneous radiation will increase with the increasing size; the electric field will cause the changes of spectrum frequency; its spectrum frequency shift is proportional to the square of the electric field intensity; apart from a few spectral lines, the frequency shift of spectral lines that is caused by the electric field and layer-to-layer interaction will decrease as the size increases; the interaction will make the level of electronic energy level lower slightly (the order of magnitude is between 10−7−10−9 eV), the slightly increased spectrum intensity and the slightly increased value of coefficient of spontaneous radiation, but it will not influence the frequency of spectrum, intensity, and the trend that coefficient of spontaneous radiation changes with the size; when the size is smaller, the layer-to-layer interaction effect will be significant.

Cadmium accumulation among 12 cultivars of radish (Raphanus sativus) and 10 cultivars of carrot (Daucus carota var. sativa) was studied in a Cd-contaminated soil. The Cd concentration in the edible parts of radish and carrot ranged from 0.04 to 0.14 and 0.14 to 0.19 mg kg(-1) fresh weight, respectively. All the tested carrot cultivars and 33% of the tested radish cultivars exceeded the Chinese allowable limit for Cd. The study showed a greater scope for selecting radish cultivars than for carrot to avoid the excess of the Cd limit when grown on lightly contaminated soils.

The shot-range interaction and the atomic anharmonic vibration are both considered, and then the analytic functions of the Debye temperature, the specific capacity and the thermal conductivity of graphene with the temperature are obtained. The influence of anharmonic vibration on these thermal physical properties is also investigated. Some theoretical results are given. If only the harmonic approximation is considered, the Debye temperature of the graphene is unrelated to the temperature. If the anharmonic terms are considered, it increases slowly with the increasing temperature. The molar heat capacity of the graphene increases nonlinearly with the increasing temperature. The mean free path of phonons and the thermal conductivity of the graphene decrease nonlinearly with the increasing temperature. The relative changes of the Debye temperature, the specific heat capacity and the thermal conductivity caused by the anharmonic terms increase with the increasing temperature. The anharmonic effect of atomic vibration becomes more significant under higher temperature.

Taking TiCu alloy as an example, based on the measurement of thermal expansion coefficient, the harmonic vibration cpefficient and anharmonic vibration coefficient of atoms were calculated. With the help of Collins model, the author worked out the thermodynamic function and the solubility curve under the atomic anharmonic vibration. And, the influence of the anharmonic vibration was also discussed.

Taking into consideration short-atomic-range interactions and anharmonic effects, we calculate the thermal expansion coefficients, Gruneisen parameters, the elastic modulus of graphene varying with temperature and the phonon frequency. The anharmonic effects associated with the graphene deformation are also discussed. The results show that the value of thermal expansion coefficient is negative in the moderate temperature range, and it becomes positive when the temperature grows to be higher than a certain value. The change rate of elastic modulus with respect to temperature and pressure are calculated, and phonon frequencies are estimated. In the process of graphene thermal expansion, it is accompanied with the change of bond length and the rotation around the axis normal to the plane. Our results indicate that the effects due to the bond change are more significant than that of the rotation. We also show that if anharmonic effects are ignored, the thermal expansion coefficient and the Gruneisen parameters are zero, and the elastic modulus and the phonon frequency are constant. If anharmonic effects are considered up to the second term, these values will vary with temperature, and become closer to the experimental value. The higher the temperature is, the more significant the anharmonic effects become.

A pot experiment was conducted using a soil contaminated with 2.12 mg x kg(-1) Cd to study the effect of the variety of the soil bulk density on the Zn/Cd uptake by the hyperaccumulator Thlaspi caerulescens and the removal of Cd and Zn from the soil. The contaminated soil received 0, 0.1%, 2% of soil conditioner and the plants were harvested after 100 days. The results showed that soil amendment with the soil conditioner (EB. a) significantly decreased the soil bulk density. Compared to the control, the bulk density value decreased from 1.27 g x cm(-3) to 1.09 g x cm(-3) at the level of 2% soil conditioner. The increased biomass of shoot and root was observed at the treatment of EB. a amendment. The total root length, root hair length and root/shoot ratio were all significantly enhanced (p0.05) by the addition of EB. a. The significant positive relationships between the total root length and the removed Cd/Zn from soil were determined (p0.05). Compared with the control,the total root length was increased by 2.6 folds at the addition of 2% soil conditioner; the Cd concentration and removal of Cd from soil were significantly elevated by 20% and 30% respectively. The phytoextraction efficiency of Cd was improved from 15% to 19%. However, the Zn concentration and removal of Zn were not significantly elevated by the addition of soil conditioner. The present results demonstrate that the decreased soil bulk density may improve the root system of T. caerulescens and enhance the phytoextraction efficiency of Cd.

By considering the existence of the vacancy and the unharmonic vibration of the atoms, the thermodynamic functions of the two-dimensional system are calculated in terms of the Collins model and the Ar is taken as an example. The critical point, Boyle temperature and Boyle curve when the translational and vibrational motions are taken account of are discussed. The results are close to the experimental data and the values calculated by empirical formulae.
