3. Gondwana break‐up controlled by tectonic inheritance and mantle plume activity: insights from Natal rift development (South Mozambique, Africa)

Abstract

The breakup of Eastern Gondwana started during the Early Jurassic with the separation of Antarctica and Madagascar from Africa. While margins architecture has been described along the Western Somalia Basin and the central Mozambique, the spatial extent of rifting further south – i.e. the Natal Valley – remains poorly documented. Seismic reflection profiles interpretation, 40Ar/39Ar ages and isotopic data show the existence of a plume related magma-rich margin – the Natal segment – characterized by a large volume of seaward dipping reflectors inferred to be basalts. In particular, the contrast in lithosphere rheology, probably caused by a Meso-Neoproterozoic belt between the Kaapval and Grunehogna Archean cratons, favored extension and upwelling from a deep mantle thermomechanical anomaly, the so-called Karoo superplume that started at around 180 Ma. Further, the presence of stretched continental crust at around 30°S implies a more southerly position of Antarctica which will need to be considered in future kinematic models.

Abstract

The rifted continental margins of Mozambique provide excellent examples of continental passive margins with a significant structural variability associated with magmatism and inheritance. Despite accumulated knowledge, the tectonic structure and nature of the crust beneath the South Mozambique Coastal Plain (SMCP) are still poorly known. This study interprets high-resolution seismic reflection data paired with data from industry-drilled wells and proposes a structural model of the Limpopo transform margin in a magma-rich context. Results indicate that the Limpopo transform margin is characterized by an ocean-continent transition that links the Beira-High and Natal valley margin segments and represents the western limit of the continental crust, separating continental volcano-sedimentary infilled grabens from the oceanic crust domain. These basins result from the emplacement of the Karoo Supergroup during a Permo-Triassic tectonic event, followed by an Early Jurassic tectonic and magmatic event. This latter led to the establishment of steady-state seafloor spreading at ca.156 Ma along the SMCP. A Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous event corresponds to formation of the Limpopo transform fault zone. Which accommodated the SSE-ward displacement of Antarctica with respect to Africa. We define a new type of margin: the magma-rich transform margin, characterized by the presence of voluminous magmatic extrusion and intrusion coincident with the formation and evolution of the transform margin. The Limpopo transform fault zone consists of several syn-transfer and -transform faults rather than a single transform fault. The intense magmatic activity was associated primarily with mantle dynamics, which controlled the large-scale differential subsidence along the transform margin.

Abstract

Little is known about the geological history of the Glorieuses seamount including basic information about its age and origin related to the regional evolution of the southern tip of the Somali Basin. This study focused on describing and reconstructing the long-term stratigraphic evolution of the Glorieuses seamount (SW Indian Ocean) to identify the mechanisms that have occurred through time to finally shape the emerged modern islands. Distinct terrace levels, currently submerged along the flanks of the seamount and surrounding seamounts, have already been interpreted as resulting from successive carbonate development and back-stepping episodes over the last 62 Myr. New isotopic and biostratigraphic dating on the flanks of the seamount, coupled with sequence stratigraphic interpretation of seismic profiles acquired in the adjacent basin, provide new constraints for the Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic vertical evolution of the seamount topped by carbonate platforms and sedimentation in the surrounding deep basin. Even if starved steep slopes prevent a straightforward source-to-sink continuity between the platform and the basin domains, our findings propose a consistent chronostratigraphic framework for the identified seismic markers and sequences in the deep basin, and discuss a long-term geological model that includes the main driving factors behind deposition (volcanic events, subsidence vs uplift phases, climate and hydro-dynamism changes) and their quantitative impact on the evolution of the isolated carbonate sedimentary system. Our results show that: (i) the Glorieuses volcanic seamount emerged from two successive Late Cretaceous magmatic pulses, firstly during the Turonian, then during the Maastrichtian (ii) at least two potential uplift phases are recognized during the Tertiary (Paleogene and/or the Eocene and Tortonian); (iii) basinal sedimentation recorded an abrupt change probably related to major regional hydro-dynamical changes in Late Eocene times in the We

Abstract

The tectonothermal history of the four major phases of the Sierra San Pedro Martir pluton and surrounding metamorphic rocks of the Mesozoic Peninsular Ranges batholith of Baja California is presented on the basis of U/Pb, 40Ar/39Ar step-heating, and fission-track dating, in combination with Al-in-hornblende geobarometry. A previous model proposed up to 90 [degrees] of east-side-up tilting of the pluton, exposing >20 km of crustal section to account for its crescent shape, asymmetrical zoning, internal structure, the eastward younging of K-Ar dates across the intrusion and eastward increase in the metamorphic grade of the country rocks, from greenschist to amphibolite facies. The U/Pb data suggest that the different phases of the pluton were emplaced sequentially from west to east between 97.0 +4/-1 Ma and 93.8 +1/-1 Ma. All except one of the 105 40Ar/39Ar age spectra have well-defined plateaus and are interpreted as cooling ages. Samples from the pluton give hornblende and biotite 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates and apatite fission-track dates that young from west to east; thus, hornblende dates decrease from 95 to 91 Ma, biotite dates decrease from 94 to 88 Ma, and apatite dates decrease from 72 to 57 Ma. Muscovite, biotite, and plagio-clase from the same rock sample collected at the easternmost phase of the pluton yield concordant 40Ar/39Ar dates of 88 Ma. The exposed part of the pluton underwent rapid cooling ([approximately equal to]40 [degrees] C/Ma) down to [approximately equal to]250 [degrees] C in the first 10 m.y. after intrusion. Modeling of track-length distribution in apatite is consistent with monotonic slow cooling from ca. 80 Ma to the present. The data do not support a history that includes major tilting of the pluton. Eastward younging of 40Ar/39Ar and fission-track dates may be explained by [approximately equal to]15 [degrees] of east-side-up tilting of the pluton at or after 88 Ma about a north-south horizontal axis. Furthermore, the fission-track data suggest that part or all of this tilting may have taken place at or after 57 Ma, and therefore may be a consequence of regional-scale crustal extension associated with the opening of the Gulf of California in Neogene time. Such tilting is in agreement with the Al-in-hornblende geobarometry for the hornblende-biotite intrusive phase that yields pressures of 5.2 [+ or -] 0.6 kbar. An [approximately equal to]15 [degrees] northeast-side-up tilt of the crustal block containing this pluton would explain the apparent paleomagnetic inclination discrepancies with cratonic North America and militates against large-scale northerly transport of Baja California.

Abstract

[sup.40.Ar]/[sup.39.Ar] laser-probe dating of phengitic micas has been carried out by step-heating and spot-fusion procedures. These micas represent successive deformation stages in the structural evolution of the internal Dora Maira nappe, western Alps. Single phengites from a gneiss affected by a single ductile strain under retrogressive conditions (sample 99.1) display complete isotopic resetting with nearly homogenous intracrystalline Ar distribution and yield plateau ages of about 40 Ma. Small clusters of phengites from an earlier foliation were selected from a polydeformed mica schist (sample PTX3). They show a partial isotopic resetting in response to overprinting during the retrogressive deformation stage with a 'concentric' age zoning from 68 Ma on the rim to 87 Ma in the core on one cleavage plane. This zonation is fully consistent with the laser-derived discordant age spectrum, which ranges from 40 to 90 Ma from low to high temperatures. According to the deformation history of both samples, these preliminary data suggest a deformation control on Ar migration during recrystallization processes, and they are consistent with the timing of the collisional evolution previously reported for southern Dora Maira units. This study shows that the [sup.40.Ar]/[sup.39.Ar] continuous laser-probe dating technique produces data accurate enough to discriminate several tectonometamorphic episodes recorded in single hand samples.

Abstract

International audience; The monazite U-Th-Pb chronometer is extensively used to date metamorphic rocks because it is usually considered to be resistant to diffusive Pb loss at temperatures as high as 800°C. However, age perturbations are sometimes documented in monazite grains showing distinct compositional and age domains. The mechanism by which Pb is lost is not well understood. Fluid-assisted recrystallization has been shown to constitute an efficient mean to reset the monazite chronometer in experimental conditions (Seydoux-Guillaume et al. 2002). Whether the same holds true in natural systems remains to be documented. Here we present in situ U-Th-Pb ages on monazite from foliated pegmatitic veins from highly strained levels of the Central Rhodope metamorphic pile (Greece, Bulgaria), together with oxygen isotope characterization and 40Ar-39Ar data. U-Th-Pb ages were obtained by (LA)-ICPMS on 8 monazite grains from three samples. In one sample from Bulgaria, the ages are concordant at 35 Ma, and no chemical zonation is observed. Quartz and feldspar have ..18O values consistent with equilibration at high temperatures. Microfabrics in the vein and the host rocks indicate high grade conditions of deformation. In the two other samples, from Greece, monazite grains show distinct chemical domains and yield discordant U-Th-Pb ages ranging from 52 to 36 Ma. Strong oxygen isotope disequilibrium between quartz and feldspar argues for a complex fluid history: high-..18O fluids first invaded rocks and were followed by low-..18O fluids at lower temperatures. Low temperature fluid circulation at around 36 Ma is consistent with 40Ar-39Ar dating of both samples at 33-34 Ma (mica plateau ages) and with microfabrics documenting a transition from high grade to greenschist facies conditions of deformation during intense shearing. These data confirm the capacity of fluids in disturbing significantly the monazite chronometer.

Abstract

International audience; The study area is located in the Galicia-Trás-os-Montes Zone (GTMZ zone, Arenas et al. 1986, Fig. 1), that belongs to the internal zone of the Hercynian belt and is composed of a relative autochthonous and parautochthonous units overthrusted by allochthonous complexes (Ribeiro et al. 1990). This domain of Palaeozoic schists is affected by a low to high temperature – medium pressure metamorphism. These rocks exhibit a well-developed regional schistosity related to nappes emplacement (D1 and D2 events) and are affected by NS-trending crenulation lineation and folds (D3 event) The late D3 event is characterized by a high-temperature metamorphism leading to development of local migmatite. Both parautochthonous and allochthonous units are intruded by syn- and post-kinematic plutons. Four generations of granites (G1 to G4) are identified by their textural and geochemical characteristics and by crosscutting relationships. Gold deposits are spatially associated with the G3 granites whereas Sn-W deposits are represented, in the study area, by disseminated and vein-type mineralization spatially close to the G2 granites (fig. 1).

Abstract

International audience; Au and W-Sn mineralization of the Schistose Domain of Galicia-Trás-os-Montes are spatially related to late hercynian granites. The Bruès (Au) and the Mina Soriana W-(Sn) deposits are studied. Both show some similarities and are assumed to form in the same tectonic and metamorphic context, on top of the granites. The role of the granite as a source for mineralizing fluids and rheological control for vein emplacement is re-adressed and discussed.
