Abstract

ECRH&CD is one of the favorite heating system for magnetically confined nuclear fusion plasmas. KIT is strongly involved in the development of high power gyrotrons for use in ECRH systems for nuclear fusion. KIT is upgrading the sub-components of the existing 2 MW, 170 GHz coaxial-cavity short-pulse gyrotron to support long-pulse operation up to 1 s, all components will be equipped with a specific active cooling system. Two important developments for future high power, highly efficient gyrotrons will be discussed: design of gyrotrons with high operating frequency (∼ 240 GHz) and efficiency enhancement by using advanced collector designs with multi-staged voltage depression.

Abstract

Gyrotron R&D within the EUROfusion Work Package Heating and Current Drive (WPHCD) is addressing the challenging requirements posed on gyrotrons by the European concept for a demonstration fusion power plant (EU DEMO). These requirements, as specified within WPHCD, ask for highly reliable and robust long-pulse operation of the gyrotron, delivering 2 MW of microwave power at frequencies above 200 GHz with a high overall efficiency above 60% and the option for fast frequency step-tunability. To meet these targets, which are clearly beyond today's state-of-the-art, the R&D activities within WPHCD are organized in five main branches: these are the experimental verification of the advanced coaxial gyrotron technology at long pulses, the development of a coaxial gyrotron meeting the EU DEMO requirements, the development of multi-stage depressed collectors for enhanced energy recovery, the development of large broadband diamond windows to allow fast frequency tunability of the gyrotron, and the studies on further innovations and improvement of critical gyrotron components, in view of optimization of performance, reliability, and industrialization. The paper presents the progress made on these activities, the recent results, and the near-term planning. The major recent achievements include (i) the experimental validation of the fabrication of the new, water-cooled components for the longer-pulse coaxial gyrotron at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, by demonstrating 2.2 MW at 170 GHz with 33% efficiency without depressed collector, (ii) the design of key components for a 2 MW, 170/204 GHz dual-frequency coaxial gyrotron, (iii) the design of a two-stage depressed collector with 77% efficiency, (iv) the first-ever production, in an industrial plasma reactor, of large chemical vapor deposition diamond wafers of 180 mm diameter, (v) the procurement of an advanced electron gun with coated emitter edges, and (vi) advances in the theoretical and numerical modelling for investigating improved concepts for the gyrotron beam tunnel and cavity. © EURATOM 2019.

Abstract

The engineering design and R&D of auxiliary heating systems and their sub-systems are a key activities in the frame of the present conceptual design phase for a first of a kind DEMOnstration Fusion Power Plant in order to develop a system capable of achieving and controlling burning plasmas. In the frame of the EU DEMO reference design, the R&D activities consider the injection of about 50 MW of Electron Cyclotron (EC) power to support and assist different plasma phases. As the project is still in the conceptual phase, a range of options for gyrotrons, transmission lines and antennas is under assessment taking into account the guidelines for the integration of the EC system in a nuclear reactor and a maximal achievable reliability and availability of the EC power during operation. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

Long-term options for a steady-state DEMOnstration power plant may require the availability of gyrotrons with an operating frequency significantly above 200 GHz together with an RF output power of more than 1 MW and a total gyrotron efficiency of better than 60%. Frequency tuning in steps of around 2–3 GHz might be needed for control of plasma stability. Multi-purpose operation at frequencies with leaps of about 30 GHz might be considered for plasma start-up, heating and current drive at different operation scenarios. The combination of those requirements clearly challenges present-day technological limits. The R&D work within the EUROfusion WP HCD EC Gyrotron R&D and Advanced Developments is focusing on named targets. In particular, a centre frequency of around 240 GHz is under investigation. The coaxial-cavity gyrotron technology, and, as a possible fallback solution, the conventional hollow-cavity are under investigation. Both options are studied with regards to maximum achievable output power versus efficiency, operation stability and tolerances. Concerning the coaxial-cavity technology, an additional experimental investigation shall verify the predicted operation capabilities. Various promising concepts for multi-stage depressed collectors (MSDC) are under investigation. The research and development are completed by advancing the simulation and test tools capabilities significantly. © 2017 The Authors

Abstract

Today's performance requirements for future DEMO gyrotrons are an operating frequency > 200 GHz and an output power of 2 MW. A total gyrotron efficiency of better than 60 % must be achieved. Multi-purpose/multi-frequency operation and frequency step-tunability are required also. It has been shown earlier, that the coaxial-cavity technology is a promising candidate [1] for future fusion power plants. In [1] a world record RF output power at 170 GHz of 2.2 MW has been presented in short-pulse operation (~ few milliseconds). However, it has to be proven that the coaxial-cavity technology can be used in steady-state operation. That shall be achieved by upgrading the existing 2 MW 170 GHz short-pulse prototype with a cooling system and the implementation of advanced Magnetron Injection Guns (MIGs) [3]. Both, the advanced MIGs as well as the longpulse gyrotron will show the way towards a possible solution for DEMO with a significantly higher output power at higher operating frequencies. Abstract

The history of Jewish nursing in World War I has so far not been central to medical history research. Rosa Bendit's war diary is still the only source available on the voluntary service Jewish nurses provided during World War I. Their number was small compared to that of nurses in general. Jewish nursing in Germany has hardly been researched. Jewish nurses, like their Christian colleagues, took on wartime nursing tasks voluntarily. This paper will focus on the experiences of the nurses who were sent to various locations in East and West by the Stuttgart Jewish Nurses' Home. Based on quotations from the war diary their position within the medical service will be described, compared and analyzed. The paper draws attention to special characteristics in the comparison ofJewish and Christian nurses and explores issues such as religious observance, religious discrimination, patriotism and differences in the evaluation of the nurses' work. A brief outline of the history of the Stuttgart Jewish Nurses' Home illustrates their working conditions. The Jewish nurses applied themselves with as much effort and devotion as their Christian counterparts. Although there were only few of them, the Jewish nurses managed to establish a recognized position for themselves within the medical service. The history of Jewish nursing in Stuttgart ended in 1941 when the Jewish Nurses' Home was dissolved by the Nazis and four nurses were murdered in concentration camps.

Abstract

In view of increasing rates of antibiotic resistance worldwide and decreased research and development of new antibacterial compounds, programmes helping to better understand the complex relationship between antibiotic consumption and emergence of resistance have gained importance. Consequently, in addition to increased support for research projects that establish prospective surveillance and evaluation of antibiotic resistance and antimicrobial drug use, the EU has passed directives addressing political leadership in this respect. Information on antibiotic use in Germany is now available from databases independent from cost-oriented market research studies. This information allows estimation of antibiotic use in ambulatory and hospital care as compared with to other EU countries. According to results of current projects, the frequency of national antibiotic use in ambulatory care in Germany (4948 defined daily doses per 1000 population per year) falls within the lower third of EU countries. Upper boundaries in regional variation in antibiotic use are still much lower than values for high-use countries like France, Spain and Portugal. Hospital antibiotic use, in contrast, appears to be in the range of that reported for other countries. However, only rough estimates of hospital antibiotic use are available for Germany as well as most other EU countries due to data usually derived from non-representative hospital sampling.
