Abstract

This study brings a systematic review that evaluated 43 articles on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) applied to stormwater management in urban areas. This review aims to establish a reference on NBS effectively applied and whose environmental, social, and economic benefits have been duly discussed. The results address 13 NBS techniques/methodologies implemented and their ecosystem benefits. Our findings suggest that the multifunctional nature of NBS makes it challenging to categorize environmental services and social benefits since there are multiple interactions and scales among the various benefits of NBS. Most studies have made greater efforts in approaches that use modeling, test benches, and/or laboratory facilities. However, although they work well for their purposes, there is no guarantee that the benefits will be maintained when applied on a full scale. We concluded that only a few studies scientifically evaluated the performance of installed NBS infrastructures, almost all in developed countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Caatinga biome is the largest and wettest semi-arid environment globally, occupying 10% of the Brazilian territory. Half of the original vegetation from the Caatinga has already been deforested. This research aims to identify the factors associated with Caatinga deforestation (2010–2016). Therefore, the researchers used Geographically Weighted Regression to analyse the drivers of deforestation at the municipal level. Our results showed that five factors are crucial for understanding the spatial variability of deforestation in the Caatinga biome: agricultural credit, cattle, goats, distance from roads, and mining activities. The results were interpreted carefully since the semi-arid Biome is marked by regional asymmetries, mixing subsistence agriculture with agribusiness (MATOPIBA and Vale do Rio São Francisco). Abstract

Resumo A bacia hidrográfica do rio Machadinho é um exemplo de ocupação desordenada presente na região amazônica, na qual foram desmatadas grandes áreas com consequente conversão da floresta em pastagens e em núcleos urbanos. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de analisar os impactos na hidrologia (vazão, precipitação e evapotranspiração) da bacia do rio Machadinho diante de sua dinâmica de ocupação antrópica. Primeiramente, analisaram-se mudanças na cobertura da terra usando imagens do sensor Landsat 5-TM para os anos 1984, 1997 e 2011. A variável vazão foi avaliada quanto a sua sensibilidade mediante o emprego do modelo SWAT para determinar a descarga líquida fixando-se os padrões climáticos e variando-se os cenários históricos de cobertura da terra. A precipitação, obtida por meio de dados do CHIRPS para o período de 1981 a 2017, e a evapotranspiração, estimada via dados do SSEBop entre os anos de 2002 a 2017, foram tratadas como variáveis geoespaciais distribuídas na bacia, com tendências de comportamento de suas séries históricas aferidas por meio do teste Mann-Kendal. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que a ocupação da bacia deu-se de maneira desordenada, cuja área com pastagem passou de 2,6% no ano de 1984 para 45,9% no ano de 2011, sendo a maior conversão observada na nascente do corpo hídrico principal, o que evidenciou uma maior produção de vazão pelo modelo SWAT, que adequadamente captou a variação dessa variável. Adicionalmente, observou-se tendência de redução pluviométrica nos meses mais chuvosos, enquanto detectou-se elevação da evapotranspiração nos meses mais quentes. Nesse sentido, é importante ressaltar que o desmatamento da região tende a reduzir a disponibilidade hídrica para a bacia. Abstract The Machadinho river basin is an example of disorderly occupation present in the Amazon region, where large areas were deforested and consequently the forest was converted into pastures and urban centers. The present work has the objective of analyzing the impacts in hydrology (streamflows, precipitation and evapotranspiration) of the Machadinho river basin due to its dynamics of anthropic occupation. First, the land cover change was analyzed using Landsat 5-TM images for the years 1984, 1997 and 2011. The streamflow variable was evaluated for its sensitivity by using the SWAT model to determine net discharge by setting the weather patterns and by varying the historical land cover scenarios. The precipitation, obtained by data from the CHIRPS for the period from 1981 to 2017, and evapotranspiration, estimated by the SSEBop data between 2002 and 2017, were treated as distributed geospatial variables in the basin, with behavioral trends of their corresponding historical series measured by means of the Mann-Kendal test. The results showed that the occupation of the basin occurred in a disorderly way, where the pasture area increased from 2.6% in 1984 to 45.9% in 2011, with the highest conversion observed at the spring of the main water body, which accounted for a higher flow production by the SWAT model that adequately described the variable. In addition, trends of rainfall reduction were observed in wetter months, while trends of evapotranspiration elevation were detected in warmer months. Therefore, it is noteworthy to register that deforestation in the region tends to reduce water availability to the basin.

36. Evaluation of Quantile Delta Mapping as a bias‐correction method in maximum rainfall dataset from downscaled models in São Paulo state (Brazil).

Abstract

An essential step for improving climate change models' performance is to evaluate their ability to represent the current climate conditions, especially extreme events. On such background, this study aims at evaluating the performance of the Quantile Delta Mapping (QDM) as a bias correction method for annual maximum daily precipitation series (bmax) generated from downscaled climate change models under tropical–subtropical conditions of Brazil. We selected the QDM due to its ability to correct bias in extreme quantile of wet days. Climate projections obtained from 20 NASA Earth Exchange Daily Downscaled Projections models (NEX‐GDDP) from 1950 to 2005 were subjected to validation processes based on the QDM method. Two climate change scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 W m−2) have also been considered. Several goodness‐of‐fit measures, such as root‐mean‐square‐error (RMSE), SD, percentual bias (pbias), mean absolute error (MAE), Pearson correlation test, modified Willmott test (dm), have been calculated from the outcomes of the models and their corresponding observed data (obtained from rain gauges). These goodness‐of‐fit measures were calculated before and after applying the QDM method. The QDM was able to correct virtually all biases. More specifically, the QDM successfully adjusted the empirical cumulative distribution of climate change projections, removing the systematic error of raw data. The QDM also presented a suitable performance when applied to future projections (2020–2095). This statement holds for all NEX‐GDDP models, except for the ACCESS1‐0 model in RCP 8.5. In such a scenario, this latter model presented unrealistic rainfall values. Finally, with the improvement resulting from applying the bias correction method QDM, there was an increase in the number of climate projections suitable for end‐users in the study region. Abstract

The main objective of this study was to investigate the trends on average and extreme events in time series of daily precipitation from 1980 to 2010 in the Paraná River basin, Brazil. The nonparametric Mann–Kendall test was applied to detect monotonic trend in the precipitation series. The occurrence of extreme values was analysed based on three generalized extreme values (GEV) models: Model 1 (stationary), Model 2 (non‐stationary for location parameter), and Model 3 (non‐stationary for location and scale parameters). The GEV parameters were estimated by the Generalized Maximum Likelihood method (GMLE) and for the non‐stationary models, the parameters were estimated as linear functions of time. To choose the most suitable model, the maximum likelihood ratio test (D) was used. From the results observed at the monthly scale, it was possible to infer that the months with the highest probability of an extreme weather event occurrence are February (climates Aw and Cfa), July (Cfa and Cfb), and October (Aw, Cfa, and Cfb). Approximately 90% of the 1,112 stations presented no trend regarding the GEV parameters. The non‐stationarity showed by other stations (Models 2 and 3) might be associated with several factors, such as the alteration of land use due to the north expansion of the agricultural border of the Paraná River basin.
